Love Talk / Re: 10 Tips to Mend a Broken Heart

9. Create a new world.

This is especially important if your world has collided with his, meaning that mutual friends who have seen him in the last week feel the need to tell you about it. Create your own safe world â€" full of new friends who wouldn’t recognize him in a crowd and don’t know how to spell his name â€" where he is not allowed to drop by for a figurative or literal surprise visit. Take this opportunity to try something new â€" scuba diving lessons, an art class, a book club, a blog â€" so to program your mind and body to expect a fresh beginning… without him (or her).

8. Work it out.

Working out your grief quite literally â€" by running, swimming, exercising, walking, or kick-boxing â€" is going to give you immediate relief. On a physiological level â€" because exercise increases the activity of serotonin and/or norepinehrine and stimulates brain chemicals that foster growth of nerve cells â€" but also on an emotional level, because you are taking charge and becoming the master of your mind and body. Plus you can visualize the fellow who is responsible for your pain and you can kick him in the face. Now doesn’t that feel good?

7. Make a good and bad list.

You need to know which activities will make you feel good, and which ones will make you want to toilet paper your ex-lover’s home (or apartment). You won’t really know which activity belongs on which list until you start trying things, but I suspect that things like checking out his wall on Facebook and seeing that he has just posted a photo of his gorgeous new girlfriend is not going to make you feel good, so put that on the “don’t attempt” list, along with e-mails and phone calls to his buddies fishing for information about him. On the “feels peachy” list might be found such ventures as: deleting all of his e-mails and voicemails, pawning off the jewelry he gave you (using the cash for a much-needed massage?), laughing over coffee with a new friend who doesn’t know him from Adam (to ensure his name won’t come up).

6. Laugh. And cry.

Laughter heals on many levels as I explain in my “9 Ways Humor Heals” post, and so does crying. You think it’s just a coincidence that you always feel better after a good cry? Nope, there are many physiological reasons that contribute to the healing power of tears. Some of them have been documented by biochemist William Frey who has spent 15 years as head of a research team studying tears. Among their findings is that emotional tears (as compared to tears of irritation, like when you cut an onion) contain toxic biochemical byproducts, so that weeping removes these toxic substances and relieves emotional stress. So go grab a box of Kleenex and cry your afternoon away.

5. Help someone else.

When I’m in pain, the only guaranteed antidote to my suffering is to box up all of my feelings, sort them, and then try to find a use for them. That’s why writing Beyond Blue contributes a big chunk to my recovery, why moderating Group Beyond Blue has me excited to wake up every day. When you turn your attention to another person â€" especially someone who is struggling with the same kind of pain â€" you forget about yourself for a split moment. And let’s face it, that, on some days, feels like a miracle.

4. Allow some fantasizing.

Grief wouldn’t be the natural process that it should be without some yearning for the person you just lost. Dr. Christine Whelan, who writes the “Pure Sex, Pure Column” on BustedHalo.com, explains the logic of allowing a bit of fantasy. She writes:

If you are trying to banish a sexual fantasy from your head, telling yourself “I’m not going to fantasize about her” or “I won’t think about what it would be like to be intimate with him” might make it worse… In a famous psychological study from the 1980s, a group of subjects were told to think about anything but whatever they did, they were not supposed to think about a white bear. Guess what they all thought about? [A white bear.]

3. List your strengths.

As I wrote in my “12 Ways to Keep Going” post, a technique that helps me when I feel raw and defeated to try anymore is to list my strengths. I say to myself, “Self, you have been sober for 20 years!! Weaklings can’t pull off that! And here you are, alive, after those 18 months of intense suicidal thoughts. Plus you haven’t smoked a cigarette since that funeral back in December of last year!” I say all of that while listening to the “Rocky” soundtrack, and by the last line, I’m ready to tackle my next challenge: move on from this sadness and try to be a productive individual in this world. If you can’t list your strengths, start a self-esteem file. Click here to learn how you build one.

2. Detach and revel in your independence again.

Attempting to fill the void yourself â€" without rushing to a new relationship or trying desperately to win your lover back â€" is essentially what detaching is all about. The Buddha taught that attachment that leads to suffering. So the most direct path to happiness and peace is detachment. In his book, Eastern Wisdom for Western Minds, Victor M. Parachin tells a wonderful story about an old gardener who sought advice from a monk. Writes Parachin:

“Great Monk, let me ask you: How can I attain liberation?” The Great Monk replied: “Who tied you up?” This old gardener answered: “Nobody tied me up.” The Great Monk said: “Then why do you seek liberation?”

One of the most liberating thoughts I repeat to myself when I’m immersed in grief and sadness is this: I don’t need anyone or anything to make me happy. When I’m experiencing the intense pangs of grief, it is so difficult to trust that I can be whole without that person in my life. But I have learned over and over again that I can. I really can. It is my job to fill the emptiness, and I can do it… creatively, and with the help of my higher power.

1. Go through it, not around it.

I realize the most difficult task for a person with a broken heart is to stand still and feel the crack. But that is exactly what she must do. Because no shortcut is without its share of obstructions. Here’s a simple fact: You have to grieve in order to move on. During the 18 months of my severe depression, my therapist repeated almost every visit: “Go through it. Not around it.” Because if I went around some of the issues that were tearing me apart inside, then I would bump into them somewhere down the line, just like being caught in the center of a traffic circle. By going through the intense pain, I eventually surfaced as a stronger person ready to tackle problems head on. Soon the pain lost its stronghold over me.

Love Talk / 10 Tips to Mend a Broken Heart
July 06, 2013, 07:34:01 AM
By THERESE J. BORCHARD

Bess Myerson once wrote that “to fall in love is awfully simple, but to fall out of love is simply awful.” Especially if you are the one who wanted the relationship to last.

Mending a broken heart is never easy. There is no quick way to stop your heart from hurting so much.

To stop loving isn’t an option. Author Henri Nouwen writes, “When those you love deeply reject you, leave you, or die, your heart will be broken. But that should not hold you back from loving deeply. The pain that comes from deep love makes your love ever more fruitful.”

But how do we get beyond the pain? Here are 10 tips I’ve gathered from experts and from conversations with friends on how they patched up their heart and tried, ever so gradually, to move on.

Staying Disciplined

Once you have your profit/loss strategy in place, you will have to remember that the whole idea of the plan is to establish strict guidelines for when to sell. Sure, it hurts to see a stock continue to rise once you have sold it, but it is often better to sell on the way up than to wait until you have to dump the stock while the price is collapsing after its peak. Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr. once said, "Only a fool holds out for the top dollar."

The Bottom Line

Keep in mind that our example figures are generalizations. Devising your plan requires detailed research, analysis, self-assessment and a realistic outlook. Setting a profit limit at 100% (double your money) doesn't make sense if you invest in low-risk companies that grow steadily at 15% per year.

Here are some things to remember:

A stock that declines 50% means you will need to double your money to get back to even. Controlling losses is the key to sound investing.

Making mistakes is human nature. Once you realize this, you will find it easier to move on.

Buying a stock and holding onto it for a very long time doesn't mean you will make money. A buy and hold strategy will work only if you pick the right companies. The most important part of devising a profit/loss plan is sticking to it!

Executing Your Plan

Once you've decided on your numbers, whether conservative or aggressive, you have to put the plan into action with as few hitches as possible. Remember, this plan has a double requirement: you have to sell your stocks if they fall to a certain level and if they rise to a certain level.

Now, brokers will not let you enter two different sell orders for the same security so you need to figure out which one you'd rather enter first. It may be wisest to enter orders that first protect your downside: many wise investors use the stop-loss order, which instructs your broker to buy or sell a stock once it has reached a certain price. The stop loss ensures that you won't get burned on a down market, especially if you aren't able to watch your stocks every second. When you enter in your order with your broker, set the stop price at your maximum loss percentage and then sit and wait. If the price ends up appreciating to your upper boundary, just change the price of your stop loss order, which will then activate the immediate sale of your stock.
#21314
Devising Your Plan

Devising a plan may be more difficult than you'd expect. First, you'll need to set the maximum gain you will accept and the maximum loss you will tolerate for your investments, but these maximums and minimums shouldn't necessarily be the same for every stock. For example, a blue chip stock is more unlikely to rise or fall by 10% within any given year, as compared to a small-cap growth stock, which will exhibit more volatility. In other words, you must analyze each stock individually to estimate how much it is likely to move in either direction.

Some investors use technical or fundamental analysis or a combination of both to determine appropriate limits for gains and losses.

Another way to devise your limits is by modeling your plan on the performance of a designated benchmark, such as an index or even on the past performance of your own portfolio.

Another factor you must consider when devising your profit/loss plan is your risk tolerance, which depends on many factors, such as your personality, your time frame and your available capital. Typically, people who are risk averse will have tighter boundaries than those who don't mind risk. Risk lovers will try to profit as much as possible from a rising stock, but a more conservative investor may sell the stock early on in its rise to eliminate the risk of losses, which would occur if the stock took a quick downward dive. If you prefer to shy away from risks, a profit/loss plan of 10% each way may not be suitable or even realistic for you.

On the other hand, if you are willing to take on the added risks associated with potential profits, then a 10% profit/loss might be more appropriate.

What Is a Profit/Loss Plan?

This plan is a step that many retail investors (and professionals) often overlook. The profit/loss plan is a set of limits that determines the maximum loss or gain an investor will take on a stock. Containing losses is a very important part of investing, so the profit/loss plan is crucial to a sound strategy.

We all make stock-picking mistakes and most of us have lost money in the stock market - what sets the great investors apart is their ability to recognize their bad choices and use what they've learned to make up for them later. A profit/loss plan helps you recognize your mistakes by allowing you to separate your emotions from investing. If you aren't too zealous about your gains and you see them purely as a means of increasing your cash flows (rather than your ego), you will have a much easier time letting go of your losses, and therefore, controlling them.

Who needs a profit/loss plan? Isn't investing only about buying low and selling high? It would be nice to always buy at the bottom and sell at the top, but it is nearly impossible to do so consistently.

Furthermore, investors are only human: emotions sway our judgment and it is in our nature to hate losing. Taking a loss on a stock, therefore, is not only detrimental to our pocketbooks, but it also hurts our egos. Time and time again investors take profits by selling an investment that has appreciated, but hold onto declining stocks in the hope of a rebound. Often, these investments shrivel to a fraction of their previous worth.

So how can an investor avoid this type of outcome? One solution is to learn to be a disciplined investor and to adopt a profit/loss plan. In this article, we'll go over this strategy and show you how to use it to stay in the black.

Obsessiveâ€"compulsive disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder characterized by intrusive thoughts that produce uneasiness, apprehension, fear, or worry; by repetitive behaviors aimed at reducing the associated anxiety; or by a combination of such obsessions and compulsions. Symptoms of the disorder include...preoccupation with sexual, violent or religious thoughts; relationship-related obsessions; aversion to particular numbers; and nervous rituals, such as opening and closing a door a certain number of times before entering or leaving a room. These symptoms can be alienating and time-consuming, and often cause severe emotional and financial distress. The acts of those who have OCD may appear paranoid and potentially psychotic. However, OCD sufferers generally recognize their obsessions and compulsions as irrational, and may become further distressed by this realization. --Wiki

Two-faced character

The researchers said both of these were possible based on the character's behaviour and the interaction of the two personalities of Smeagol and Gollum at the same time.

But based on their discussions, the team, led by Dr Liz Sampson, concluded that Gollum displayed seven of the nine symptoms of schizoid personality disorder, including solitary habits, nervousness and paranoia.

The researchers, writing in the British Medical Journal, said: "Gollum displays pervasive maladaptive behaviour that has been present since childhood with a persistent disease course.

"His odd interest and spiteful behaviour have led to difficulty in forming friendships and distress to others.

"He fulfils seven of the nine criteria for schizoid personality disorder, and if we must label Gollum's problems we believe that this is the most likely diagnosis." -- http://www.dailymail.co.uk/
#21336
Many have suggested that Gollum suffered schizophrenia, while others say he had a multiple personality disorder because of his other incarnation as Smeagol.

Smeagol was aggressive and spiteful to others, eventually creating Gollum who had an even more violent personality.

A survey of 30 medical students found that 25 diagnosed Gollum with schizophrenia, with three citing a multiple personality disorder.

Gollum, the disturbed hobbit-kind creature from the Lord of the Rings trilogy, most probably suffered from schizoid personality disorder, researchers said today.

Fans of the Tolkien novels have long debated the nature of Gollum's mental illness, with discussion on more than 1,300 websites.

Now medical students from University College London have come to their own conclusions about his mental health.

The new rules will permit prepayment in foreign exchange of short-term loans registered under the central bank, subject to standard documentary requirements.

“This will facilitate access to the banking system for legitimate transactions requiring payment in FX,” Tetangco noted.

Monetary authorities will also lift the requirement for banks to submit documents supporting reports on importation under the regulator's documents against acceptance (DA) and open account (OA) arrangement.

Banks, however, are still need to keep such records for central bank verification.

“The measure will simplify and reduce reporting burden
on banks,” Tetangco said.

Last April, Bangko Sentral said Filipinos will be able take more dollars for travel, education, medical and other non-trade purposes abroad under a fresh wave of foreign exchange liberalization measures.

On Friday, Tetangco said monetary authorities “affirmed... commit
ment to maintaining a safe and sound financial system, a stable FX market, and monetary policy supportive of economic growth.” â€" VS, GMA News

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas relaxed anew the rules on foreign exchange (FX) by loosening the reins on movement of funds and simplifying the reporting requirements of banks.

In a statement Friday, Bangko Sentral Governor Amando Tetangco Jr. unveiled the newly approved FX rules issued by the policy-setting Monetary Board “as part of continuing efforts to promote an appropriate framework for foreign exchange operations.”

This is the seventh in a series of FX reforms instituted by the central bank since 2007.

The new rulesâ€"which will be formally released “shortly” through an implementing circularâ€"will allow registration of custodian banks of non-resident investments in local equities.

Subject to central bank approval, the new rules also green-light foreign exchange conversion of peso proceeds of a non-resident's sale of local shares.

“These measures will broaden investment options available in the domestic capital market and allow freer capital mobility,” Tetangco said.

No license to practice

Dr. Leo Olarte, president of the Philippine Medical Association (PMA) who was in the forum along with Senior Insp. Niño Briones of the CIDG, said his organization had been monitoring the activities of the group. He said that being foreigners, they obviously did not have a license to practice medicine in the country.

“We have here a clear case of a conspiracy to violate the Medical Act of 1959, which governs the practice of medicine in this country. In a conspiracy theory, an act of one is the act of all. So therefore all doctors and nondoctors alike who conspired to commit this crime of practicing medicine without the proper license are equally liable,” Olarte said.

“We are appealing to all victims of these illegal practice to contact us at the PMA so that together we can correct the injustices committed against you,” he said.

Briones said his group was conducting an investigation and gathering evidence to determine if the case merited criminal prosecution in court.

“We have to make a thorough investigation because Secretary Villar’s case has grave implications, particularly concerning the health of those who are being duped by false claims onhe benefits of stem cell procedures,” he said.
#21361
Pagayanan said that Villar had submitted a sworn statement and medical abstracts of his condition before and after the treatment to the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG).

“We will hold liable the doctors who gave him the treatment and the Filipino agent,” she said, refusing to disclose names pending the police investigation.

The lawyer added that should the hotel management be found to have been aware of the operation of the group, it could also be held liable for what happened to Villar.

Asked why her client consented to the procedure done at a hotel, Pagayanan said Villar was convinced by the Filipino agent that the therapy was not invasive, unlike a surgical operation, and that it was regularly done by the group there.

Human embryonic stem cells can become any cell in the body. AFP FILE PHOTO

At the age of 64, Antonio Villar Jr., chair of the Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB), wanted to get rid of the aches and pains that come with aging.

So when he was told about a stem cell procedure, he agreed to the treatment, for which he paid 16,000 euros (P854,000), in the hope that it would rejuvenate him and make him live longer.

Instead, he felt weaker and feared the procedure even put his life at risk.

Alleging that he was duped into what he now described as a bogus stem cell treatment at a posh hotel in Mandaluyong City, Villar had asked the police to investigate the group, composed mostly of foreigners, whom he blamed for his failing health.

On Thursday, Villar sent his lawyer, Claire Pagayanan, to a news forum to announce that he was considering filing charges against a German, three Thais and their Filipino agent for the “fake” stem cell procedure he went through on June 9 last year.

Pagayanan said that after the treatment, Villar’s prostate gland expanded and he had to undergo radiation therapy.

“With what has been happening caused by the stem cell treatment, he now comes forward to save those who may be victims of fraudulent stem cell therapy,” said the lawyer.

VATICAN CITY â€" Late popes John Paul II and John XXIII will be made saints of the Roman Catholic Church, the Vatican said on Friday in a widely-awaited announcement, without specifying when the canonisations will occur.

"The Supreme Pontiff approved... the canonisation of Blessed John XXIII... and decided to call a consistory also concerning the canonisation of Blessed John Paul II," it said in a statement.

Pope Francis met with Cardinal Angelo Amato, the head of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, and gave his formal approval to a second miracle attributed to John Paul II (1978-2005) -- a condition for becoming a saint.

John XXIII (1958-1963), who is known as "Good Pope John" for his kindly demeanour which many have likened to Francis, only has one miracle to his name but the pope still approved the canonisation anyway in a rare move.

The Vatican said the canonisations could occur before the end of the year but that the precise date would be decided by the consistory -- a meeting of cardinals, according to i.Media, a news agency specialising in Vatican affairs.

Morsi took office vowing to move beyond his roots in the Muslim Brotherhood, but his presidency threw the country into deep polarization. Those who took to the streets this week say he lost his electoral legitimacy because he tried to give the Brotherhood and Islamist allies a monopoly on power, pushed through a constitution largely written by his allies and mismanaged the country's multiple crises.

"Now we want a president who would really be the president of all Egyptians and will work for the country," according to Said Shahin, a 19-year-old protester in Tahrir. He fell to the ground to pray as soon as el-Sissi spoke.

Badr, the Tamarod movement spokesman, praised the crowds in the streets saying, they succeeded in "putting your revolution back on track."

"Let's start a new page, a new page based on participation," he wrote on his Twitter account. "Our hand is extended to all."

Morsi and his allies say the opposition never accepted their appeals for dialogue â€" seen by opponents as empty gestures â€" and that Mubarak loyalists throughout the government sabotaged their attempts to bring change.

Rizk Gamil, a 44-year-old driver, brought his wife to Tahrir to celebrate after el-Sissi announcement. "Today is a day of joy. Today is the day we liberated Egypt from Brotherhood occupation," he said.

A major question now is whether the Brotherhood and other Islamists will push back against the new, military-installed system or can be drawn into it. (AP)

A security official said Saad el-Katatni, the head of the Freedom and Justice Party, and Rashad Bayoumi, one of two deputies of the Brotherhood's top leader, were arrested early Thursday. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the press.

El-Haddad, the Brotherhood party's spokesman, said a list has been drawn up of hundreds of Brotherhood members believed wanted for arrest, including himself.

"We don't know the details. The army is not giving details," he told The Associated Press. "It is a full-fledged coup and it is turning into a bloody one too. They are arresting everybody."

Police shot dead six Islamists who opened fire on Marsa Matrouh's police headquarters as they drove past. Morsi supporters tried to storm a police station in the southern city of Minya, but where battled back by police, killing three, while other Islamists destroyed cars and shops and threw stones at a church in the nearby city of Deir Mawas, while police fired tear gas at them. Police and armed Morsi supporters also battled in the southern city of Assiut, another Islamist stronghold.

Nearly 50 people have been killed in clashes between Morsi supporters and opponents since Sunday.

The army deployed troops, commandos and armored vehicles around the country. In Cairo, they were stationed on bridges over the Nile and at major intersections. They also surrounded rallies being held by Morsi's supporters â€" an apparent move to contain them.

After the military's 9:20 p.m. announcement, the Brotherhood's TV station went black. Islamist TV networks that have been accused of inciting violence also went off the air and some of their prominent anchors have been arrested, according to security officials speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Security forces stormed the studio of Al-Jazeera Misr Mubasher and detained the staffers. The station, a branch of Qatari-run Al-Jazeera TV, has maintained a generally pro-Morsi line.

Travel bans were imposed on Morsi and top figures from the Muslim Brotherhood including its chief Mohammed Badie and his powerful deputy Khairat el-Shater. Officials said security forces had surrounded Badie inside a tourist compound where he had been staying in the Mediterranean coastal city of Marsa Matrouh, near the Libyan border.

The army insisted it is not carrying out a coup, but acting on the will of the people to clear the way for a new leadership. El-Sissi warned that the armed forces, police will deal "decisively" with violence.

Some of Morsi's Islamist backers, tens of thousands of whom took to the streets in recent days, have vowed to fight to the end, although he urged everyone "to adhere to peacefulness and avoid shedding blood of fellow countrymen."

"Down with the rule of the military!" some of them chanted after el-Sissi's speech, reviving a chant used by leftist revolutionaries during the nearly 17 months of direct military rule that followed Mubarak's removal.

Also appearing with el-Sissi was Mahmoud Badr, one of two representatives of Tamarod, or Rebel â€" the youth opposition movement that engineered the latest wave of protests. He urged protesters "to stay in the squares to protect what we have won."

After the speech, fireworks burst over crowds dancing and waving flags in Cairo's Tahrir Square, epicenter of the 2011 uprising. Now it was one of multiple centers of a stunning four-day anti-Morsi revolt that brought out the biggest anti-government rallies Egypt has seen.

"Don't ask me if I am happy. Just look around you at all those people, young and old. They are all happy," said 25-year-old Mohammed Nageh, shouting to be heard in Tahrir. "For the first time, people have really won their liberty."

A statement from Morsi's office's Twitter account quoted Morsi as saying the military's measures "represent a full coup categorically rejected by all the free men of our nation."

Flanked by Muslim and Christian clerics as well as ElBaradei and two opposition activists, el-Sissi said a government of technocrats would be formed with "full powers" to run the country.

He promised "not to exclude anyone or any movement" from further steps. But he did not define the length of the transition period or when presidential elections would be held. He also did not mention any role for the military.

The constitution, drafted by Morsi's Islamist allies, was "temporarily suspended," and a panel of experts and representatives of all political movements will consider amendments, el-Sissi said. He did not say whether a referendum would be held to ratify the changes, as customary.

ElBaradei, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and the former head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency, said he hoped the military plan "is the beginning of a new launch for the Jan. 25 revolution when people offered their dearest to restore their freedom, dignity and social justice for every Egyptian."

In a last-minute statement before the deadline, Morsi again rejected the military's intervention, saying abiding by his electoral legitimacy was the only way to prevent violence. He criticized the military for "taking only one side."

"One mistake that cannot be accepted, and I say this as president of all Egyptians, is to take sides," he said in the statement issued by his office. "Justice dictates that the voice of the masses from all squares should be heard," he said, repeating his offer to hold dialogue with his opponents.

"For the sake of Egypt and for historical accuracy, let's call what is happening by its real name: Military coup," Morsi's top foreign policy adviser Essam al-Haddad wrote on his Facebook page.

After the deadline expired, el-Sissi went on state TV and said the chief justice of the Supreme Constitutional Court, Adly Mansour, would step in as interim president until new elections are held. Mansour was appointed to the court by Mubarak but elevated to the chief justice post by Morsi and will be sworn in Thursday by judges of his court.

On Monday, army chief Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi had given Morsi an ultimatum to find a solution to meet the demands of anti-government demonstrators in 48 hours, but the 62-year-old former engineer defiantly insisted on his legitimacy from an election he won with 51.7 percent of the vote in June 2012.

Any deal was a near impossibility, however, making it inevitable the military would move.

As the deadline approached, el-Sissi met with pro-reform leader Mohammed ElBaradei, top Muslim cleric Sheik Ahmed el-Tayeb and Coptic Pope Tawadros II, as well as opposition activists and some members of the ultraconservative Salafi movements. The consultations apparently were aimed at bringing as wide a consensus as possible behind the army's moves.

The Brotherhood boycotted the session, according to its political arm the Freedom and Justice Party.

Beyond the fears over violence, some protesters are concerned whether an army-installed administration can lead to real democracy.

President Barack Obama urged the military to hand back control to a democratic, civilian government as soon as possible but stopped short of calling it a coup d'etat.

He said he was "deeply concerned" by the military's move to topple Morsi's government and suspend Egypt's constitution. He said he was ordering the US government to assess what the military's actions meant for US foreign aid to Egypt â€" $1.5 billion a year in military and economic assistance.

The US wasn't taking sides in the conflict, committing itself only to democracy and respect for the rule of law, Obama said.

Gehad el-Haddad, a spokesman for the Muslim Brotherhood party, said Morsi was under house arrest at a Presidential Guard facility where he had been residing, and 12 presidential aides also were under house arrest.

The army took control of state media and blacked out TV stations operated by the Muslim Brotherhood. The head of the Brotherhood's political wing was arrested.

The ouster of Morsi throws Egypt on an uncertain course, with a danger of further confrontation. It came after four days of mass demonstrations even larger than those of the 2011 Arab Spring that toppled longtime autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

Egyptians were angered that Morsi was giving too much power to his Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamists and had failed to tackle the country's mounting economic woes.

Egypt's army ousts Morsi

CAIRO -- Egypt's first democratically elected president was overthrown by the military Wednesday, ousted after just one year in office by the same kind of Arab Spring uprising that brought the Islamist leader to power.

The armed forces announced they would install a temporary civilian government to replace Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, who denounced the action as a "full coup" by the generals. They also suspended the Islamist-drafted constitution and called for new elections.

Millions of anti-Morsi protesters around the country erupted in celebrations after the televised announcement by the army chief. Fireworks burst over crowds in Cairo's Tahrir Square, where men and women danced, shouting, "God is great" and "Long live Egypt."

Fearing a violent reaction by Morsi's Islamist supporters, troops and armored vehicles deployed in the streets of Cairo and elsewhere, surrounding Islamist rallies. Clashes erupted in several provincial cities when Islamists opened fire on police, with at least nine people killed, security officials said.

The Egyptian army yesterday toppled president Mohamed Morsi and replaced his Muslim Brotherhood-dominated regime with a transitional government charged with preparing for early presi dential and parliamentary elections.

The country’s chief justice is set to assume presidential powers, a national coalition cabinet will be formed, and a means found to bring youth into the political process.

President Barack Obama said he’s “deeply concerned” by the events and urged Egypt’s military to return to a democratically elected civilian government as soon as possible.
