lucky to have watched this in the late 1990s:

most grown-ups in and around hameln have joined the open-air play as rats when they were children.  our host was one of them.

from what i saw, there wasn't much acting.  the children in rat costumes simply get down on all fours briefly, and then stand up and walk in line following the pied piper on his route from the town square to the river.

it's cute, i thought.  the children were simply playing and enjoying the experience.  that time, there were two standouts from among the "rats", an asian and an african.  it's the costumes that added magic to the festive air.  well, even our snacks of bread (or cookies, i'm not sure now) were shaped like rats.

right in hamelin (german hameln)---

Since 1956, 80 citizens and children have been presenting the legend of the Pied Piper based upon the story by the Brothers Grimm - about 1,000 times so far.

She traces the cross-cultural, age-old extremes to which people go for “beauty” â€" or, really, for control of those judgments, whether by self or others:

In Brazil there are more Avon ladies than members of the army. In the United States more money is spent on beauty than on education or social services. Tons of makeupâ€"1,484 tubes of lipstick and 2,055 jars of skin care productsâ€"are sold every minute. During famines, Kalahari bushmen in Africa still use animal fats to moisturize their skin, and in 1715 riots broke out in France when the use of flour on the hair of aristocrats led to a food shortage. The hoarding of flour for beauty purposes was only quelled by the French Revolution.

hahaha!  vanity exempts no one.

Park, who is married to a Korean, uses human placenta for the stem cell therapy and technology from South Korea.

Placenta is a vascular organ that develops inside the uterus during pregnancy and is expelled after birth.

The three politicians who allegedly died after treatment in Germany underwent “xenogenic” or animal-based stem cell therapy. Last week, the Philippine Medical Association issued a warning against the procedure, as well as undergoing the treatment in nonhealth facilities.

Planas said she believes placenta-derived stem cell therapy is safer, but she could only speak based on her experience.

“We are now trying to determine what caused their death, whether their deaths were hastened because of the fact that they received xenogenic stem cells,” Olarte said.

He explained that xenogenic stem cell sources, or those derived from animals, could trigger complications, specifically “graft versus host reaction.”

“There is a possibility that a reaction can occur after six months of treatment. The body can reject the foreign cells,” Olarte pointed out.

But he was quick to add that they have to complete the investigation first before jumping to conclusions because it was also possible that the congressmen died mainly because they were sick, which made them seek stem cell therapy abroad in the first place.

there lies the difference.

DOH-authorized procedure

The PMA official also reiterated that receiving animal-based stem cells was dangerous, saying that if Filipinos were to seek therapy, they must opt for autologous adult stem cell treatment, which is derived from the patient’s own blood, bone marrow or fat.

This kind of treatment, which is available in the Philippines, is the only approved stem cell therapy by the Department of Health (DOH) because it had already been internationally proven as the safest procedure available, noted Olarte.

He said Filipinos should seek stem cell therapy only in DOH-approved hospitals and clinics, warning them about foreign doctors who fly into the country offering their expensive services.

On Sunday, the PMA and the PSSCM reported that there were German doctors asking Filipino patients to check in at five-star hotels in Metro Manila, where they perform xenogenic stem cell therapy for around P1 million per shot.

The groups said they had sought the help of the authorities to put a stop to the practice, which was tainting the country’s legitimate practice of regenerative medicine.

PMA investigation

On Monday, the PMA said it was looking into the recent deaths of three politicians who supposedly traveled to Germany last year to receive the xenogenic treatment.

Dr. Leo Olarte, the PMA’s president and spokesman of the Philippine Society for Stem Cell Medicine (PSSCM), did not identify the three on request of their families pending the result of the joint investigation of the organizations.

He said the groups were still trying to find out whether these politiciansâ€"two from Mindanaoâ€"died due to illness or to hypersensitivity reaction from the animal-based stem cells they had received.

Based on initial information, the three politicians separately availed themselves of stem cell therapy using sheep in Germany about six months to a year ago, Olarte said. They died March and April this year, he said.

House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. also said on Monday that Camiguin Rep. Pedro Romualdo also underwent stem cell therapy before he died on April 24 at the age of 77, also of pneumonia.

Aris said his father was advised to rest after the German trip, but because he felt so good, he went around campaigning in his district. He said that before the procedure, his father had already suffered from thrombosis in his leg because his sugar could not be controlled.

The elder Aumentado also suffered bouts of pneumonia even before. It was pneumonia that caused his father’s death, Aris said, adding he did not think it was complications from the new therapy. “His lungs were weak even before,” he said.

Belmonte surmised that his two late colleagues were not the best candidates for the controversial procedure. The treatment may have given them a false sense of hope, he said.

Doctors probe deaths of 3 politicians after stem cell treatment

The late Rep. Erico Aumentado of Bohol province underwent stem cell therapy in Germany last September and felt like “Superman” before he died of pneumonia last Christmas at the age of 72, his son told the Inquirer on Monday.

Aris Aumentado, the incoming representative from Bohol, said his father felt better on his return from Germany that he got rid of his cane and wheelchair.

“He was like Superman,” he told reporters, a day after the Philippine Medical Association (PMA) issued a warning against the so-called “xenogenic,” or animal-based, stem cell therapy.

Lawyer Charito Planas was a political and human rights activist who was exiled to the United States during the Marcos administration.

She was part of the Lakas ng Bayan (Laban) ticket in Metro Manila for the Interim Batasang Pambansa elections on April 8, 1978, which included among others Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr., Aquilino Pimentel Jr. and activist Alex Boncayao.

Laban ran against the Kilusang Bagong Lipunan ticket, led by then First Lady Imelda Marcos.

Planas was jailed by the dictator President Ferdinand Marcos, but was able to escape with the help of some nuns. She went to Malaysia then spent eight years in exile in America.

A former president of the Quezon City Parks Development Foundation Inc., which manages the Quezon Memorial Circle, she is also known as an advocate of women's causes.

She was the vice mayor of Quezon City from 1992 to 1995. (Inquirer Research)

“I met a retired justice who regularly attends the Thursday Club meeting held at the house of a common friend.  One day, I noticed how young and energetic he looked and I couldn’t help coming up to him to exclaim my astonishment.  He told me about stem cell therapy and later introduced me to a Filipino physician,” she said.

“After gaining all the knowledge about stem cell therapy and how effective the treatment is, as far as regeneration of old and/or damaged cells are concerned, the physician conducted the therapy on herself,” she said. “Needless to say, the physician was greatly awed by the effects of the therapy and what else do you expect?”

Now, with her renewed strength, she said there’s no stopping her from doing what she still wants to do.

Despite her healthy lifestyle, the “not-so-pretty” signs of aging caught up on her.

“There was a time when I experienced pain on my knees that gave me a hard time getting up and walking,” she said.

Three doctors advised her to undergo immediate surgery but a fourth surgeon told her otherwise, telling her that she could become bedridden because of her old age, Planas recalled.

And the answer to her problem came from a retired justice, who had also undergone stem cell therapy and introduced her to Park.

Sharp memory

“I have been living a simple, healthy and clean lifestyle… no vices at all. I sleep early and wake up early. But if being alive and well at 83 is something that many people wish for, the  ‘asset’ of having a sharp memory at my age is what I am really proud of,” she said.

“My appointment book contains invitations for speaking engagements, which I wholeheartedly accept whenever my schedule allows me to. I still deliver extemporaneous speeches and I quote names, dates, events and trivia with accuracy and with much gusto, the way I used to during the height of my activism days, when I was the most vocal opponent of the late President Ferdinand Marcos,” she added.”

Fruits and vegetables have been her staple. Her breakfast consists of fruits, ginger brew and blended green apple, celery, cucumber, carrots, parsley and green bell pepper.
#21129
She greets everyone with a smile and a warm hello. “Even a child who did not know me before now kisses my hand, as I have become a doting grandmother,” she said.

Planas always starts her day with a prayer. “I further ask our Creator to show and guide me the way to deserve this wonderful day,” she said.

“I also pray that proceeds of the socialized housing project for 280 families on my property be paid soon for the completion of my committed six concrete three-room school buildings, complete with Monoblock chairs, computers sets and other school paraphernalia for the Aetas and other indigenous children of Central Luzon,” she added.

Weight loss formula

Even before the stem cell treatment, she has been adapting actress KC Concepcion’s mantra of exercise, proper diet and positive attitude. This formula helped her lose weight.

“I used to weigh 203 pounds for as long as I can remember,” she said. “Now, I tip the scale at 128 pounds.”

Her morning ritual includes 100-count bed exercises of leg-pedaling and 30-minute brisk walking along the paved streets of Provident Village, Marikina City.
#21131
Functional years

For six weeks, Planas traveled from her home in Marikina City to the wellness center in Tagaytay every Saturday morning.

The trips were worthwhile, as she felt better and looked fairer after the treatment, she said.

“I was never in search for the Fountain of Youth. Age has never been a problem to me,” the former Quezon City vice mayor said.

“What excites me is the promise of functional years. That was my aim when I considered stem cell therapy,” she added.

The wonders of science helped her achieve the healthy and active lifestyle she has always wanted.
#21132
The procedure, which lasts for about an hour, is very simple, she said. Preparations, like detoxification and enema, were more taxing.

Before the injection, her legs were wrapped and needles were inserted into her skin, similar to acupuncture.

The number of sessions depends on the condition or illness of the individual.
#21133
Alternative treatment

Park, who studied and researched on alternative treatment, herbal medicines and stem cell therapy, also used the treatment to cure her lupus-stricken son, Planas said.

“I don’t claim it is the panacea of all illnesses nor will it respond similarly to another individual nor can it be a better treatment for another,” the former head of Nayong Pilipino and deputy spokesperson of the Arroyo administration said.

“One thing that I am very confident about is that the stem cells act as repair system of the body for those needing repair and act as replenishment for adult tissues,” she added.

The therapy allows the body to heal itself.

VIP patients

Former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo reportedly visited the Filipino physician a day after she was released from detention at Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC) in Quezon City after posting a P1-million bail in July last year. She was taken back to VMMC in October.

Other well-known personalities, such as justices, physicians and a senator, also reportedly frequented the wellness center.

“Doctor Park, the woman with an angelic face, performs the treatment and her fees are so minimal,” Planas said.

Her bill for the six injections amounted to five figures. “It costs a tenth of the prevailing treatment price,” she said, requesting that the exact amount be kept confidential.
#21136
“My heavily grey hair has now regained its ebony shade; my skinâ€"both body and facial skinâ€"has regained a youthful, shining glow; and my wrinkles are slowly fading away,” she added.

Planas underwent six sessions of stem cell therapy from March to April at Green and Young Health and Wellness Center, owned by Dr. Antonia Carandang Park.

The prime of Charito Planas, 83, after stem cell therapy on the cheap

By Rima Jessamine Granali
Philippine Daily Inquirer
12:45 am | Sunday, June 30th, 2013

Now she can literally walk a mile.

Lawyer Charito Planas, 83, used to have a hard time getting up. But she can now walk without pain, thanks to stem cell therapy that cost her only five figures.

While hospitals here and abroad charge millions for the treatment, a wellness center in Tagaytay offers the service 10 times cheaper, Planas said.

“The cane I used to walk with is just an accessory now, for I walk freely, without pain, without limping,” said Planas, a political and human rights activist who sought refuge in the United States during the Marcos martial law administration.

In the Police Report attached by Enerio in his letter-complaint, the pieces of evidence received by the city police were a checkered short and test papers from St. Martha’s Development Center Corp. in the name of Jacklord Decasa, a pair of slippers, blue T-shirt, sunglass, black magazine porch with 2 silver color 45 caliber magazine and 11 live ammunitions.

Enerio said these pieces of evidence were in the possession of Bagotchay for 3 months.

In his letter-complaint, Enerio asked the Ombudsman to file the appropriate criminal and administrative charges against the Imboy couple.

When sought for comment last Friday morning, Boy Imboy told the TIMES that he would gladly talk about the case. Thereafter, he hastily entered the Bohol Cultural Center with his wife and made no other statement.

http://www.boholtimesonline.com/
#21151
Decasa also said that “after the case was filed, Mayor May Lim Imboy then gave me a job at the Municipal Hall of Loay as Information clerk.”

He also stated that “it was Mayor May Lim Imboy who caused the production and posting of the Wanted poster with the picture of Eduardo “Boy” Enerio in the public places, especially in the airport and pier areas. And that I first saw copies of the said Wanted posters in the hands of Ernest Evangelista, the aid of Mayor May Lim Imboy.”

Enerio also charged the Imboys of influencing SPO1 Yolando Bagotchay of the city PNP to withhold or suppress evidence vital to the case.

He was referring to the pieces of evidence deposited in the city PNP by a certain Eutorgio Telmo Jr. and which reportedly belonged to Jacklord Decasa.
#21152
Decasa also asked in his affidavit that the crime of Murder presently pending at the Regional Trial Court of Bohol Branch 49, Tagbilaran City docketed as Criminal Case No. 14583 “be withdrawn or dismissed.”

Enerio attached the Affidavit of Desistance in his letter-complaint to the Ombudsman.

Likewise attached was another Affidavit of Jacinto Decasa.

In said affidavit, Decasa stated that “..he filed a case for Murder against Eduardo “Boy” Enerio which was upon the instigation and with the full support of Mayor May Lim-Imboy. In fact, it was Mayor May Lim Imboy who provided us with a lawyer and was the one who published the news on the local newspaper that Eduardo “Boy” Imboy was “Wanted.”
#21153
He added that “they have provided the firearm to the late Jacklord Decasa to kill me, and made it appear that the same was in my prior possession and used the same to frame the deceased at the latter’s demise.”

Enerio attached to his letter-complaint a Certification from the Bohol Police Provincial Office indicating that the caliber 45 Colt pistol MK IV with serial number 147113 was licensed and registered in the name of Brigido Zapanta Imboy.

Earlier, Jacinto Decasa, the complainant in the Murder case and father of deceased Jacklord Decasa executed an Affidavit of Desistance dated November 11, 2010 that he has “no more reason to pursue the case against Eduardo Flores Enerio and that I have forgiven him already. Further, I do not have anymore interest in testifying in the above-mentioned case against Eduardo Flores Enerio for I want to have a closure of the said bad experience.”

Enerio files graft suit anew against Imboys

Written by admin on 12 December 2010

BOARD MEMBER Brigido “Boy” Imboy and wife Loay Mayor Rosemarie “May” Imboy are facing graft charges before the Office of the Ombudsman in Manila following the filing of a letter-complaint by complainant Eduardo “Boy” Enerio.

Enerio charged the Imboys of “concocting and imputing to the undersigned a crime he never committed by instigating and financing the complainant Mr. Jacinto Decasa to file the case of Murder against me for the death of the latter’s son Jacklord Decasa. Both elected public officials used their respective offices to influence the authorities…..”

He said the couple “financed the case against me and the illegal raid and planting of evidence conducted and done by the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agents (PDEA) which is subject to another separate case before this same Office.”

As news.com.au notes, Johan Lorbeer, a German street performer, has been "hanging off walls in all sorts of impossible locations, including the sides of street buildings and shop facades since 2002."

An Agence France-Presse photo showing one of Lorbeer's fake arms was held up as proof of Dynamo's trickery.

But like most magicians, Dynamo refuses to reveal how he did it.

A video of the stunt, which was sponsored by Pepsi Max, was thoroughly dissected.

"His fingers don't move in the clip and there are no people around when he hovers up and down the bus," the news site noted. "In fact, at second glance the arm attached to the bus looks pretty phony."

Of course, Dynamo's not the first illusionist to pull off a levitation stunt using a fake arm.

Dynamo appears to levitate alongside a London bus. (Facebook)

Sad news, levitation fans: Dynamo, the magician who caused a stir in London earlier this week by appearing to levitate alongside a double-decker bus, was not, in fact, levitating. It was an illusion.

According to a crowd sourced investigation conducted on Australia's news.com.au Facebook page, Dynamo's "arm" was actually a steel prosthetic that was fastened to the bus. A harness lifted Dynamo into position, the site concluded, as his hand was tucked inside.

very interesting.  thanks, lorenz.  i'm getting at this slowly.  it's because i seem to be living these past characters in my mind.

what i can glean so far is that your lolo sa sungay (or tuhod or siko?), chose to stay in valencia and hold on to his family name.  ours went back to china and never came back, deliberately or not, by force of circumstance or not, and chose to change his name to spanish.  but tan was used as the middle name by his children (one of whom was our grandfather) instead of his wife's family name.

i hope my little knowledge of those yesteryears hews close to the truth.  there is always the danger of addition and subtraction, of subjective-objective correlatives, with oral stories passed down from generation to generation.  meantime, i'll keep checking and counterchecking.  this is getting more interesting.  and you're helping me a lot.

Yogurt

Yogurt is a yummy, filling treat that is now available in a range of flavors. For desserts, you should try eating low fat yogurt instead of something that’s high in sugar. Yogurt contains calcium, vitamin B-12 and protein; all of these are quite good for your overall body health. It’s also able to convert nutrients directly into energy.

Coconut Water

Coconut water isn’t a solid food; however, it’s one of the most inexpensive and valuable sources of energy. It is often known as “natural energy drink”. It’s full of vital vitamins and minerals, such as potassium along with lauric acid. The potassium supplies the body with the nutrients and electrolytes that replenish the body. Lauric acid is useful in accelerating a person’s metabolic process and providing an energy boost. Additionally, coconut water is low in sugar, fat as well as sodium content.

Dark Chocolate

Sources of energy don’t have to be tasteless and lack luster as many energy sources taste really sweet. One such amazing energy source is dark chocolate. Dark chocolate is filled with heart-healthy anti-oxidants. Additionally, it consists of caffeine, which is a stimulant that helps keep your body alert and improve metabolism. If you go for dark chocolate as an energy source, then be sure to you buy organic dark chocolate, that’s free of dairy. At the same time, eat dark chocolate in moderation for best results.

Walnuts

Walnuts are one of the best plant protein sources. They are usually regarded as “brain-food”, not just because of the wrinkled look of the shells, but also because of the higher concentration of omega-3 essential fats. A fistful of walnuts in your daily diet will certainly boost the energy levels. Walnuts are also a good source of fiber, bone-building calcium, and several other essential nutrients that your body requires in order to function effectively and have ample amount of energy.

Eggs

One of the food items that a lot of people undervalue as a major source of energy is eggs. Eggs are rich in protein, amino acids and omega-3 essential fatty acids, which are vital for muscle growth, a powerful immune system, brain power and equilibrium of fluids in the body. Eggs are also one of the top high energy foods because they contain more than 10 key nutrients that are essential for your body.

Oatmeal

Oatmeal is one of the primary energy boosting foods. Without butter and brown sugar, oatmeal is a good complex carbohydrate. It helps control your blood glucose levels and also keep your tummy fuller for a long time. Also, it has B vitamins that are known for improving the levels of body energy. Having said that, oatmeal would certainly add more energy to your day; the optimum time to eat oat meal is before 11-a.m.

Lentils

Lentils must be a staple part of your daily diet. They’re rich in amino-acids, protein, minerals and vitamins, and can replace rice or pasta in almost any recipe. Lentils are also rich in fiber that keeps you at the peak of satiety and doesn’t allow glucose levels to rise to higher level. Give your lunch salad an energy boost by adding a cupful of cooked red kidney-beans or garbanzo beans.

Banana

An excellent post workout recovery food item, banana is a simple carbohydrate but an instant energy source. They are also an excellent source of potassium â€" reduced level of potassium in the body can result in physical weakness. One senior member, Norberto Manero, aka Kumander Bukay, also gained notoriety in the 1980s after he was convicted of murdering Italian priest Tullio Favali whom he had suspected of having links with communist insurgents.

Santiago (spokesperson of the Reform Ilaga Movement), who is in his mid-60s, claimed that his group had at least 10,000 armed members and 10,000 more supporters.  At the press conference, the Philippine Daily Inquirer saw some 300 armed men present.  Some fighters had amulets, which, Santiago said, “came from their elders during the time of Commander Toothpick.”  The amulets are believed to lose their powers when a person using it had done something bad.  “Our instruction to them is not to go to battle if they have done something wrong against other people.  To follow God’s commandments to avoid accidents that may lead to their deaths,” Santiago said. Violence attributed to the Ilaga reached its bloodiest in June 1971 with the massacre of 65 men, women and children inside a mosque at Barangay Manili in Carmen, North Cotabato.  The group was composed of untrained villagers used by the military to attack Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) communities. Some members reportedly cut off the ears of dead Muslims and wore them around their necks as trophies. (wikipedia)

Elsewhere in the world, rat meat is considered diseased and unclean, socially unacceptable, or there are strong religious proscriptions against it. Islam and Kashrut traditions prohibit it, while both the Shipibo people of Peru and Sirionó people of Bolivia have cultural taboos against the eating of rats.

Rats are a common food item for snakes, both in the wild, and as pets. Captive-bred ball pythons, in particular, are fed a diet of mostly rats. Rats, as food items, are available from many suppliers individual snake owners, as well as to large reptile zoos. In Britain, the government in 2007 ruled out the feeding of any live mammal to another animal. The rule says the animal must be dead (frozen) then given to the animal to eat. The rule was put into place mainly because of the pressure of the RSPCA and people who found it cruel. (wikipedia)

yes, lorenz, i am an inchikadora (your quaint description of me whom you hadn't seen; funny how you could have quessed it).  but more than appearances, aherm, whether my tan ancestor was your great grandpa's brother or cousin, what, indeed, does that make of us?  distant relatives!  one day soon, you'll have to take my hand and touch it to your forehead, in blessing. ;D
#21189
i'm about to embark on writing down our own clan's genealogy and history, courtesy of an assignment placed squarely on my shoulders, my toes, my knees, and what else by my cousins.  starting with the brothers tan from china is the best takeoff, i believe.  going back further from them at this point in time is already beyond me.
#21190
i've been studying your posts on your tan lineage from china in valencia.  that our branch of the family had descended from the tans who came from china, there's no doubt.  my information though is not as clear as yours.  so far, what i know is that we are descendants of a tan, one of 4 or 5 brothers who came to valencia from china, had a family in valencia, and had gone back to china later.  it's very much like your own story though i'm not as lucky as you who got to know the name of your specific ancestor.
#21191
an urgent request, lorenz.  if there's anyone of your surviving relations of prior generations who can say that your great grandpa mr mariano tan came with 3 or 4 brothers, and if they know the names, please pass them on to me.

my understanding is that election result protests are hardly worth the effort.  recounts are very expensive.  something like 25k per precinct, if i heard it right.  imagine how much it would cost a protester even in a town election considering the number of precincts in a polling center (up to 5 precincts clustered in one polling center) and the total number of polling centers in a town.

in case we have forgotten, with all their money and political clout, nothing much happened to the protests of mar roxas, of loren legarda over the election results of her vice-presidency bid 3 years ago, nor of miriam santiago in her presidential bid many years ago.
