56 % of Men Complain about the Condom's Size - Too small or too big
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

There isn't any other way which is more efficient in impeding sexually transmissible diseases (STDs) like chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and HIV. And it is the best solution for casual sex for impeding unwanted pregnancies. Still, convincing men and women to use condoms consistently and correctly is still a tricky issue.

Men often complain that condoms do not fit, or they are uncomfortable.

A new Indiana University research discovered that in the case of subjects who reported problems with the size and the way they feel condoms, they were also more likely to experience condoms breaking and slipping.

"Most recent research has focused on how people use condoms with little attention to the physical characteristics of condoms themselves," said Michael Reece, director of the Sexual Health Research Working Group and an associate professor in Indiana University Bloomington's Department of Applied Health Science.

"Our recent research, however, indicates that sizes and shapes of the penis vary widely, but the range of condom sizes is rather limited; so it could very well be the case that there are aspects of the traditional condom that some men find too tight or too loose, influencing their ability or desire to use them during sexual encounters."

Reece's team made a questionnaire trying to identify men's problems with the condoms. 21 % reported that condoms felt too tight; 18 % reported that condoms felt too short; 10 % reported that condoms felt too loose; and 7 % reported that condoms felt too long.

The questionnaires could also be used by physicians and healthcare practitioners, especially those involved in HIV, STI and pregnancy prevention programs.

"Our 'Condom Fit and Feel Scale' offers a way for men to express in a confidential way to health care providers the exact concerns that they have with condoms related to length, width and tightness or looseness," said Debby Herbenick, associate director of SHRWG and research associate in the Department of Applied Health Science.

The researchers said their Condom Fit and Feel Scale could help condom manufacturers, who focus on the development of more comfortable condoms, with the final goal of a more effective use.

The Biggest Hand in the World - The longest finger measures 30 cm (12 inch)!
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

You would not want to play baseball against him. His hand covers half of the stadium...

But Liu Hua, the 24-year-old man from Jiangsu (eastern China) with the largest hand in the world, does not pursue a baseball career. Liu suffers from macrodactylya ("large fingers"), a congenital defect in which toes or fingers are abnormally large. He went to Shanghai No. 9 People's Hospital for radical plastic surgery.

The man was born with a left thumb, index and middle finger much bigger than the others and the odd fingers grew dramatically together with his arm during his growth period, impairing severely his work and life quality.

When Liu entered the hospital in July 2007, his left thumb was 26 cm (10.5 inch) long, his index was 30 cm (12 inch) long and his middle finger 15 cm (6 inch) long. The overall weight of his left arm reached 10 kg (22 pounds).

"My thumb and index finger are even thicker than my arms, and make my left hand useless. When I go out, I have to wrap my left hand in clothes and pretend I’m holding a bag." said Liu.

"It was the biggest hand in the world. Liu's fingers stopped growing in recent years so plastic surgery was at last possible to correct the malformation," said Chen Zuliang, a hospital official.

On July 20, after a seven-hour operation, the physicians removed parts of Liu's fingers and thumb, 5.1 kg (13 pounds) of flesh and bone.

"This was the first stage. Liu will have to come back to the hospital in another six months for surgery to reshape his left arm and shoulder," said Chen Zuliang.

Liu has now three complete fingers on his left hand -- the thumb, the ring finger and his little finger, but with some training and rehabilitation he could soon start a normal life.

Macrodactyly can be due to an abnormal nerve supply to the affected digit or abnormal blood vessels and blood supply in the area. It is not an inherited condition and can be associated with neurofibromatosis and vascular malformations.

Urinelle: See How Women Can Pee Like Men Do! - “All women have, at certain moments, wished that they could pee standing up, like men.”
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

You cannot imagine all the stunts and acrobatic postures a woman can ‘adopt’ when using a public toilet, in order to avoid the seat. Of course, there’s also the solution of covering in piles of toilet paper the filthy, germ-filled ring of horror.

The solution is here: Urinelle, a handy, disposable, sterile paper cone, manufactured by a Dutch company, employed as a urination funnel while standing up.

"I picked it up during my travels in Europe, and you could say it’s changed my life: earlier I used to be paranoid about using public toilets. But now, I can ‘stand and deliver’ â€" just like men â€" and occasionally, I even manage to whistle a happy tune.", said Penelope Wong, a Hong Kong resident.

This paranoia about hygiene in public toilets is common amongst women. "Research shows that women hardly ever sit on a public toilet seat, preferring to hover or even perch," said Orde Levinson, who has developed several ‘urology solutions’ products for women.

Urinelle is on the market in 18 countries across 6 continents, and faces competition from other similar products, like Whiz, She-Pee and Freshette.

The Hong Kong Toilet Association (HKTA) exhibited an array of ‘female urinal’ products to spread general awareness about female ‘hygiene accessories’. There were also, besides devices like Urinelle, female urinal stalls accommodated to women’s different physiology. "In the West, there are many such products," says HKTA president Michael Siu, head of the Public Design Lab at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

The female urinal is developed "not only because of the functionality, but because of the underlying feminist sentiment: the notion that ‘we can do it standing up, just like men’."

The Urinelle website (urinelle.biz) posts powerful gender-equality messages like: "All women have, at certain moments, wished that they could pee standing up, like men. Now they can!". "But in Asian countries, these products have not exactly been, well, flush with success. Our exhibition drew a lot of curious people. But even among those who felt that these were clean, hygienic options for women, we sensed a certain resistance to change.", said Siu.

But there is more. "There are some residual physical discomforts that women â€" even in the West â€" face when they have to straddle the female urinal. Perhaps with better design, they will gain great acceptability. On the other hand, ‘urination funnels’ may be particularly useful in developing countries like mainland China and India, where the levels of cleanliness in public toilet facilities for women is notoriously bad. Women who can afford it â€" each Urinelle funnel costs about $1â€" can store them in their handbags, and use them and dispose of them.", said Siu.

Urinelle can have also a medical use, for cases of women with arthritis or mobility-impaired women, but also for outdoor activities like hiking.

You can see here http://youtube.com/watch?v=2AcgH0e6wmQ how Urinelle works:

Bras Do Not Stop Boobs from Bouncing - Common bras do not avoid pain and tissue deterioration
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Nice breasts are a crucial ‘ingredient’ of femininity, but women play a heavy price for this: no matter if poorly-endowed or too generous, bouncing boobs are not really ‘supported’ by ordinary bras.

A new research made at the University of Portsmouth in England found that while exercising, women's breasts bounce more than previously thought, with a vertical movement up to 8 inches (21 cm) compared with previous data of 6 inches (16 cm). The bouncing provokes pain and a deterioration of the limited support tissue, as breasts can weigh even over 20
pounds (9 kg), and a pair of D-cup breasts weighs about 15 to 23 pounds (7 to 10 kilograms). The fashion evolved from body-tight corsets to cleavage-enhancing wonderbras, but there's design, sexiness and no science at all.

"It is only recently that bra design has turned to science. There was no research. It’s like designing a car or kitchen equipment without first thinking 'what is the purpose of this?" said author Joanna Scurr, a biomechanics professor at the University of Portsmouth in England.

She made her research on 70 subjects, all students at the University of Portsmouth, with bra sizes varying from A-cup to extra-large J and JJ. The subjects had to walk, jog and run while wearing different bra types. Meanwhile, Scurr accounted the breast movement in three directions: up-and-down, side-to-side and in-and-out. While walking, the women's breasts moved in relatively the same degree in all directions. When subjects increased the speed of jogging or running, their breasts’ movement increased more in some directions: 50 % of the total movement was up-down, 22 % side-to-side and 27 % in-and-out.

Common bras intend to decrease only the up-and-down motion. The encapsulation bras, in which each breast has a separate cup, were found better, impeding some of the movement in the other two directions, than the compression bras, which stop just the up-and-down motion.

For an A-cup size, sports bras can decrease overall breast movement by 53 %, and by 55 % for G-cup sized women. "Breasts have little natural support, although ligaments and the skin are thought to do most or all of the work. Breasts are made up of fat, milk ducts and connective tissues, such as collagen, ligaments and blood vessels. The momentum created by intense bouncing can stretch the breast's connective tissues, causing sagging and pain for many women. An estimated 50 % of women experience breast pain during exercise," said Scurr.

"Without appropriate bra support, some women abandon active sports due to breast pain. There really are women who want to do exercise but who don’t have the bras to cope. I know of a 16-year-old who was selected to play basketball for the county, but she was told to give it up because she couldn’t find a bra that made playing possible." she added.

Scurr collaborated with main bra manufacturers in Britain and worldwide for designing a bra which allows minim breast movement in all three directions. "The next bra will incorporate "smart materials" that can change to provide custom-made support for each woman and her activity level."

What Makes a Long Term Relationship? - Qualities of which the partners are aware or not
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Why do some couples divorce after one week, while others celebrate their ‘golden wedding’. Sex drive ‘pushes’ people closer to one another, but it’s more than the simple biological and behavioral factors than keep them together.

Like begets like. This is the folk perception of the fact that husbands in many cases look like brothers. And genetic researches have revealed that opposites do not attract.

J. Philippe Rushton, a psychologist at the University of Western Ontario, found that heritable personality traits can make 34 % of the decision for friendship and mate selection. "The main theory is that some genes work well in combination
with each other," Rushton told LiveScience. "If these genes evolved to work in combination, then you don't want to break that up too much for your offspring. Finding a mate with similar genes will help you ensure this."

A genetically similar spouse means more chances for a happy marriage, and child abuse levels were found lower when genetic similarity is high between spouses. In the end, a parent sacrifices more for a child who is his copy.

Even if women were found to be attracted by men more genetically dissimilar during the fertility peak periods, it is obvious that people are drawn to individuals with the same attitudes and values, essential during the initial attraction. For long commitments, likeness of personality, which can require more time to assess, is more important, as found by psychologist Eva Klohnen at the University of Iowa found in a 2005 study of newlywed couples. "Comedy can also help a relationship. But the importance of humor is different for men and women", said Eric Bressler of McMaster University.

He found that women find attractive the men who make them laugh, but men enjoy the company of women who laugh at their jokes.

But, in the end, what drives a relationship: sex or love? Brain scanning techniques revealed that in the case of people who had recently fallen in love, brain areas connected to love are more active than the sexual ones. "Romantic love is one of the most powerful of all human experiences. It is definitely more powerful than the sex drive," said Helen Fisher, an anthropologist at Rutgers University.

But the main factor maintaining a long-term relationship seems to be fidelity. Men and women value it alike.

A team at the Cornell University led by Stephen Emlen asked about 1,000 people aged 18 to 24 to rate some attributes, like physical attractiveness, health, social status, ambition, and faithfulness, on the importance they give to each characteristic for a long term relationship. People involved in long-term relationships were more precise about what they appreciated in potential mates. Fidelity came fist, followed by physical appearance, family commitment, and wealth and status. "Good parenting, devotion, and sexual fidelityâ€"that's what people say they're looking for in a long-term relationship", Emlen said.

Bad Teeth = Heart Attack - Periodontitis linked to increased symptoms of heart disease
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

You may induce a heart attack on those around you by displaying blackened and fouling teeth, but because of them you could also have a heart attack. A medical team in Marseille has discovered that those with the worst blockages in their arteries also displayed the most severe gum disease.

Gum disease was known as an important factor for heart disease, but the new research is the first to reveal that the severity of a disease is interconnected with the other.

Chronic gum disease (periodontitis) installs when waste material or plaque gather around the teeth's base and infects the gums. Plaque will not install when teeth are taken care of properly. But wrong brush and floss can lead to irritated gums vulnerable to infection; the base of the teeth is weakened and they eventually fall out. It is believed that the bacteria from the infected gums are the factor determining heart problems.

In the bloodstream, the germs activate the immune system, turning artery walls inflamed and narrowed, or bind directly to fatty deposits already built in the arteries, a fact that causes further narrowing.

The French team investigated 131 patients, who underwent an X-ray examination of the arteries, gum disease examination and blood check for inflammation.

"Patients with artery disease had more severe periodontitis than those without. The most severe teeth disease was associated with the most widespread arterial lesions," said lead researcher Dr Nicolas Amabile.

"We are the first to report that the severity of periodontitis is linked to the extension of coronary arterial lesions. Gum disease could be used as a new risk factor to identify those likely to develop heart disease. Since periodontitis is easily accessible to treatment with antibiotics and dental care, one might think its treatment could also be beneficial for coronary artery disease. This has to be confirmed with larger studies but may represent a new original approach to handle heart disease in the future." he said.

"The link between gum disease and heart disease was not yet proven. It is not clear whether established risk factors for heart disease such as smoking and diabetes have been taken into account." said Professor Robin Seymour, of Newcastle University Dental School.

But researches made by his team and in Australia revealed patients with advanced gum disease who had all their teeth replaced presented a drop in a blood protein linked to heart disease.

"They have only been followed for six months and we don't know whether it will produce any longterm reduction in heart disease. It's good practice to get your teeth checked regularly. You may not even be aware you have gum disease but it's both preventable and treatable." said Seymour.

The First Hydrogen-powered Bike! - A technology to be further applied to other vehicles
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

The model exposed at the 9th China International Exhibition on Gas Technology, Equipment and Applications

We hope this is of a better quality than the Chinese T-shirts, but they also did it. Shanghai Pearl Hydrogen Power Source Technology Co revealed the first environmentally clean hydrogen fuel-cell bike at the 9th China International Exhibition on Gas Technology, Equipment and Applications which took place last week at Shanghaimart.

The company completed the model in August and has already received commands from clients overseas.

"Most of the buyers at present are individuals keen on clean energy applications," said Tian Binglun, the company's general manager.

The bike's energy system is made of a battery tank and a pair of hydrogen gas bottles placed under the seat, looking different from the common electric bikes and has just half the weight of the normal electric batteries on electric bikes.

"We could make the battery system lighter by using different materials to make the tank. As is widely known, hydrogen has become a major source of clean energy, together with wind and solar power. With hydrogen gas, the battery produces power to drive the bike without producing harmful fumes but only a bit of water," Tian explained.

The hydrogen bike also requires just 30 minutes to refill the bottles.

"However, it takes at least three hours to recharge the lead battery in common electric bikes," said Tian.

The new bike's price is about 20,000 yuan (US$2,632), but in case of mass production it could reach about 4,000 yuan ($ 658), making it competitive with electric bikes. Fully fueled, the bike could run 100 kilometers (60 mi) at a speed of 25 km (16 mi) an hour.

The producer company is interested in applying its core patented technologies on other vehicles, like motorbikes and golf carts, in collaboration with interested partners. The main problem of the new bike is supplying hydrogen.

"Hydrogen gas is not supplied through a network, unlike gasoline, but we could provide a list of designated gas suppliers in future," said Tian.

Broken Vow - Josh Groban

Tell me his name
I want to know
The way he looks
And where you go
I need to see his face
I need to understand
Why you and I came to an end

Tell me again
I want to hear
Who broke my faith in all these years
Who lays with you at night
When I'm here all alone
Remembering when I was your own

[Chorus:]
I let you go
I let you fly
Why do I keep on asking why
I let you go
Now that I found
A way to keep somehow
More than a broken vow

Tell me the words I never said
Show me the tears you never shed
Give me the touch
That one you promised to be mine
Or has it vanished for all time

[Chorus]

I close my eyes
And dream of you and I
And then I realize
There's more to love than only bitterness and lies
I close my eyes

I'd give away my soul
To hold you once again
And never let this promise end

[Modified Chorus:]
I let you go
I let you fly
Now that I know I’m asking why
I let you go
Now that I found
A way to keep somehow
More than a broken vow

Weird and Extreme / How Do Farts (utot) Form?

How Do Farts Form? - Our gut bacteria hoax on us
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor

This issue 'stinks', but in the end it's something common to all: geniuses and dumb people, emperors and slaves.

When ingesting food and liquids, air enters your stomach. And if not by belching, then which is the other way to expel too much gas? (now I know why the Japanese do not belch much after eating).

But gases are also produced by our gastrointestinal flora and these are the cause of the stench odor. From blood some gases can also enter the gut and viceversa. Daily, about 7-10 liters of gases enter the gut, but about 1.9 liters are expelled through the anus as toots, 15 to 20 daily.

Most of the gases are ingested air, with 79 % nitrogen, the main one (78 %) and also air oxygen.

But in the thick intestine, the gut anaerobic (that are still present despite the lack of oxygen) bacteria produce methane (in some people only traces) and hydrogen, that's why the fart is flammable and can cause burnings in anus, rectum and buttocks if fired. Carbon dioxide is also present, produced by the air-consuming bacteria, brought by the blood.

The unbearable odor is induced by short fatty acids such as butyric acid (rancid butter smell), nitrogen compounds (skatole, indole) and sulfur chemicals, like hydrogen sulfide (which gives a rotten egg smell) and carbonyl sulfide. The fatty chemicals result from the activity of the bacteria, the other from protein decomposition (the last, of sulfur containing proteins) by the bacteria.

Because these activities take place in the lower intestine, it lasts for a few hours since the food digestion till the first "deliveries".

Incomplete digestion of digestible nutrients or indigestible food items means a feast for the bugs and many discharges of intestinal gas.

Aliments rich in some polysaccharides (sugars with big molecules), especially oligosaccharides (polysaccharides with a smaller molecule) like inulin and raffinose are your main embarrassing culprit. These are beans, milk, onions, radishes, cheese, cashews, Jerusalem artichokes, oats, yeast in breads, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus and other vegetables. The human body does not have enzymes for breaking them down and when we ingest them, we swallow fodder for the fart-producing bacteria. The resulting gases are mainly methane, hydrogen and carbon dioxide.

Some soak beans in the water 24 h before cooking them. This way, many fart-inducing sugars, which are soluble, go out of the beans into the water, but so do valuable minerals and proteins.

Lactose from unprocessed milk is another problem, aggravated when added to bread and cereal. In case of lactose intolerance, the person has very low levels of enzyme that allows the digestion of this sugar from milk. The result: booooom! A lot.

Fructose, a simple sugar abundant in onions, corn, wheat and sweet fruits (it is the main chemical, together with glucose, that give the sweet taste of the fruits) is harder to absorb by the gut and induces big flatulence (you know what happens when you eat too much pears, apples or plums...oh, yeah). Corn fructose is often used to sweeten soft drinks and fruit drinks, and juices also lead to flatulence!

Sorbitol, a simple sugar found in many fruits, is used as sweetener in "diet" and sugar-free foods, because it is not digestible. Indeed, by your gut, but your gut bacteria indulge in it, and, this way, sugar-free gum, candy, soda and so on make you a good methane-hydrogen producer...

Starches (like those from cereals, potatoes and beans), too, cause flatulence, except the rice. Cellulose fibers, good for gut transit, can be broken down to gases by gut bacteria.

Fats and protein also slow down the gut transit and bacteria have more time to produce gas from the sugars.

Aliments like beans and milk (rich in both sugars and sulfuric proteins), are not recommended if you want to avoid flatulence. Meat or eggs in combination with sugar-rich foods have the same effect.

In the end, each body is a universe and by trial and error you will find which type of food causes problems.

Anti-gas products like alpha-galactosidase (Beano) or lactase enzyme (Lactaid) are recommended if you want to avoid embarrassing moments and some simethicone (Gas-X) speeds the gas flow, fighting bloating.

Abundant flatulence can signal a gut problem, chronic irritation or other severe issues.

The Most Frequent Power Supply Myths, The First Part - Finding some truth behind countless stories
By: Alexandru Pancescu, Hardware Editor - Softpedia

A computer power supply unit

Like most computer hardware parts, the power supply units are coming attached to a high number of stories, half truths and downright misleading conceptions. While most of the average users do not need to go too deeply into the hardware components of their computers there are some that are interested in doing so and while they may be well intentioned they inadvertently start rumors, stories and so on. One of the most widespread misconceptions out there is that a higher power supply unit will automatically mean a higher energy consumption and of course a higher power bill.

Maybe this is the first and the biggest myth of all, as a power supply unit, PSU for short, delivers exactly the power needed by the computer system, sometimes less but certainly nothing more. Most power supply units are rated to a certain number of watts, let's say for argument's sake 500W, but while this is the maximum power output of the unit, if the computer's power requirements are below that figure, let's say 350W, than the PSU will deliver only 350W and not 500W as that additional power will most likely destroy the hardware components. This is not meant as a downplay of the powerful power supply units, as such units are needed when building computers with a lot of computing power, which is generated by a powerful and power hungry central processing unit, a high energy intensive graphics card or several hard disk drives. One of the most overlooked characteristics of a power supply unit is its rated efficiency, which means how much of the electrical energy is wasted away as residual heat. A higher efficiency rated PSU may cost more but in the long run users can expect to actually save money as less energy is wasted.

There are different brands of PSUs out there, ranging from the more expensive branded units that are built by well known and established manufacturers, to the so called "white" units built from lower quality material but which cost a lot less. The second myth is centered around the power rating of such units, as almost all of them are now coming with tags claiming huge power outputs. When calculating the maximum power output of a supply unit it is usual to consider an ambient temperature of only 25 degrees centigrade even if most PSUs are running at a much higher temperature of 40 degrees or even more. For most PSUs the power rating drops as the temperature climbs, so a cheap unit may yield with 30 or even 50 percent less power than the nominal claim under the "normal" operating conditions.

Another popular myth about power supply units is that several, in fact the more the better, 12V rated rails are better for today's computer systems than a single rail. A single 12V rail can transmit all the output energy from the power supply unit to the computer, while a multi rail design must share the total output between multiple rails. In the end, because of that sharing, each rail will deliver only a fraction of the claimed power as a number of factors, like distribution losses, are causing as much as 30 percent of the energy to be wasted. This phenomenon is similar to trapping the energy, as a rail rated for 20 amps which delivers to a consumer only 10 amps cannot redistribute the rest of the power to other rails, so the remaining power is simply wasted away. Because there is a limit of the power rating on every single rail on the multi rail design of a power supply unit, sharing a rail between big consumers like the modern graphics cards can lead to erratic behavior, as the respective hardware components are receiving less energy that they need for a normal operation.
