Art is meant to represent the impossible beyond our imagination. This is beyond the way our imagination regards art, but maybe, in fact, we are conservative
and obsolete...

The British Jordan McKenzie, 40, involves in epic auto-sexual orgies for creating a new exhibition, which is the result of his masturbating and ejaculating over the canvas. The artist produces about three works a week. So far, he has produced 55 work of art images through immortalizing its sperm pouring carbon powder over it. After that, McKenzie covers the work with a glass plate (to protect it against flies and other elements).

The fruit of his sexual energy will be available to the public for a month, at the Center for Recent Drawing in Highbury, North London.

Believe it or not, McKenzie's semen art has not induced a stir of appreciation in England, as both conformist and radical categories are rather outraged with these masterworks. And, by now, we have no notice of any buyer.

"All we can do is pray for the artist. The extraordinary thing is that someone actually thought it was art and put it on at his gallery. We are clearly dealing with a very mixed-up person," father Kit Cunningham, of St Etheldredas Church in Clerkenwell, told the Sun.

"Tracy Emin showed her knickers but this is a different thing entirely. I am in favor of almost any form of expression but I do baulk at ejaculating over a piece of paper. Oh please!" said art lover and artist David Gleeson. "Excuse the pun, but it sounds like he's taking the piss," he added.

Still, the artist considers himself a misunderstood.

"This is only the first batch of them. It is a diary of my ejaculations, they are heartfelt and delicate. I hope people will come and see them - not judge them out of hand," said Jordan, previously known to make art works with his "own body".

I was also an avid fan of the late great american folk singer John Denver, i used to play before in my guitar the hit song Country Road , unfortunately On October 12, 1997, Denver was killed when the Long-EZ aircraft he was piloting crashed just off the coast of California at Pacific Grove, shortly after taking off from the Monterey Peninsula Airport.

WASHINGTON - The Beatles are about to become radio stars in a whole new way. NASA on Monday will broadcast the Beatles' song "Across the Universe" across the galaxy to Polaris, the North Star.

This first-ever beaming of a radio song by the space agency directly into deep space is nostalgia-driven. It celebrates the 40th anniversary of the song, the 45th anniversary of NASA's Deep Space Network, which communicates with its distant probes, and the 50th anniversary of NASA.

"Send my love to the aliens," Paul McCartney told NASA through a Beatles historian. "All the best, Paul."

The song, written by McCartney and John Lennon, may have a ticket to ride and will be flying at the speed of light. But it will take 431 years along a long and winding road to reach its final destination. That's because Polaris is 2.5 quadrillion miles away.

NASA loaded an MP3 of the song, just under four minutes in its original version, and will transmit it digitally at 7 p.m. EST Monday from its giant antenna in Madrid, Spain. But if you wanted to hear it on Polaris, you would need an antenna and a receiver to convert it back to music, the same way people receive satellite television.

The idea came from Martin Lewis, a Los Angeles-based Beatles historian, who then got permission from McCartney, Yoko Ono and the two companies that own the rights to Beatles' music. One of those companies, Apple, was happy to approve the idea because is "always looking for new markets," Lewis said.

Perhaps coincidentally, the song's launching comes a day before the release of the DVD of the Julie Taymor movie named after the Beatles hit.

GUANGZHOU, China -- China's grid-locked transport system rumbled back to life Friday but millions of angry travellers remained stranded all around the country, unable to return home for annual holidays.

Passengers began to flow out of airports, train stations and bus depots but it was nowhere near enough to clear a massive backlog of travellers stranded for days after the worst winter in 50 years hit at the busiest time of year.

The Lunar New Year, China's biggest annual holiday, begins on February 7 and the government said 180 million people go home to be with their families in what is thought to be the largest annual human migration in the world.

On top of transport nightmares, weeks of heavy snow and icy conditions across vast areas have caused $7.5 billion damage, Zhu Hongren, a top official with China's main economic policy agency, told a press conference.

"Such a disaster has been unprecedented in terms of the large scale and the large areas affected. We are in a tough battle to ensure the safety of people and property and ensure economic stability," said Zhu, who is coordinating several ministries on response efforts.

Millions of migrant workers still trying to get back for traditional family gatherings Friday faced either more waiting or the prospect of a holiday away from home, despite transport woes apparently easing slightly.

In Guangzhou, the capital of southern Guangdong province, 500,000 people were waiting to leave airports and train and bus stations, according to media reports.

As the numbers grew at transport hubs in other parts of the country, local authorities were forced to beef up security to keep order.

The China Meteorological Administration said several of the worst affected provinces in central, eastern and southern China were in for further snowstorms and freezing rain this weekend.

About 11.2 million workers in Guangdong had given up hope of returning for next week's holiday -- often the only bright spot in a year of hard work for low pay -- due to the massive traffic snarls, officials there said.

"I've waited three days here already and it looks like I may not be able to get home in time for the Lunar New Year," said a migrant worker outside Guangzhou's main train station.

"I don't think it is fair the way they have handled this situation."

Only travellers with tickets for Friday departures were allowed to board. Those whose trains were cancelled earlier would have to wait until February 6 before they could repurchase tickets, travellers and press reports said.

Continued road travel disruptions were also expected as persistent freezing rain confounded efforts to de-ice highways, the official Xinhua news agency said.

The government also faces the challenge of restoring food and energy supplies to large areas at a time when output typically falls due to the holidays.

Damage to crops across several provinces has further stoked already high food prices -- a sensitive topic for the government due to inflation's potential for triggering unrest in China.

Zhu and other officials deflected suggestions that the government was insufficiently prepared for the disaster, implying there was no way to get ready for such ferocious weather.

But residents of hard-hit areas expressed anger.

"The government should have prepared for such situations earlier," Li Xiangxiang, 23, told AFP as she picked over suddenly scarce vegetables at a market in Hunan's capital, Changsha.

"I think the government just wasn't ready."

President Hu Jintao visited a coal mine in northern Shanxi province late Thursday, urging miners to increase production to head off the country's worst power crisis in memory.

Officials said Friday the number of train cars used to carry coal to power plants would be raised to an all-time high of 40,000 per day amid reports the nation's stockpile of coal for power generation had dropped to a six-day supply.

The transport chaos has strangled distribution of coal, the source of three-fourths of China's energy, causing blackouts in 17 provinces, according to reports.

The weather has led to the evacuation of 1.76 million people, killed dozens, and affected at least 105 million people in the country of 1.3 billion, according to official figures.

The freak weather has even blanketed the arid Taklamakan desert in far-western China with snow, Xinhua said.

"Never before had the whole desert been covered," it said, quoting local meteorological officials.

LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles County coroner has opened an investigation into the death of Hollywood legend Marlon Brando's eldest son, acting at the request of his family, a spokesman for the medical examiner said on Tuesday.

Medical examiners took custody of Christian Brando's body on Monday and performed an autopsy on Tuesday, but a finding on the cause of death will await toxicology tests that take six to eight weeks to complete, said Ed Winter, assistant chief of the coroner's office.

Brando, the troubled son of the late Oscar-winning screen star and Welsh actress Anna Kashfi, died early on Saturday at age 49, at a Los Angeles hospital where he was being treated for pneumonia, according to lawyers for his father's estate.

Winter said Brando's "family was concerned about his prior history, both medical and drug history, but I'm not going to go any further into it until we have a chance to look at it and do our investigation."

Brando's ex-wife, Deborah, was quoted in a weekend story on People magazine's Web site as saying her former spouse had been comatose and on a respirator before his death. "His body was totally compromised," she said. "He lived so hard. ... This is just so sad."

An attorney for Marlon Brando's estate, David Seeley, told Reuters it was Kashfi, Christian's long-estranged mother, who asked for a coroner's investigation.

"Neither the estate of Marlon Brando, nor its beneficiaries, are involved in these decisions," Seeley said. "At this point we have no reason to question the hospital's actions or the cause of death as previously stated," he added.

The autopsy came a day after Deborah Brando, who has claimed in the past to be the illegitimate child of Elvis Presley, filed suit against the executors of Marlon Brando's will asserting a claim to the actor's estate.

Estate says suit without merit
The suit says Christian Brando transferred his rights as a beneficiary of the estate to his ex-wife -- making her an "assignee" -- under a February 2007 settlement of a domestic abuse case she brought against him after their brief marriage was annulled.

And she claims the executors of the Brando estate forged a codicil to his will days before his 2004 death to prevent anyone "from challenging the will or trust."

Seeley said Deborah Brando's lawsuit was without merit.

And attorney Benjamin Brin, who represented Christian Brando in his 2007 settlement with his ex-wife, said their agreement "does not make her an assignee of any rights whatsoever."

Instead, Christian Brando agreed to pay her the sum of $45,000, contingent on his receiving future disbursements from his father's estate that have yet to be made, Brin said.

According to Seeley, Christian Brando was one of nine beneficiaries who shared equally in proceeds from his father's personal property -- roughly $2.3 million from the 2005 auction of the actor's furniture, clothing, artwork and other effects.

The will also established a living trust to manage Marlon Brando's remaining assets -- including real estate in Tahiti, residual payments and profit participation from his acting career -- for the benefit of Christian and fellow heirs. But no distribution from that trust has yet been made, Seeley said.

Christian Brando made worldwide headlines in 1990 by shooting dead the boyfriend of his half-sister, Cheyenne, and later served five years in prison for voluntary manslaughter. Cheyenne Brando committed suicide in 1995.

Marlon Brando, considered one of the greatest actors of his generation, died in 2004 at the age of 80.

Here's Arnel of Philippines at the center with the Journey band members,

You know for us pinoys when you hear the band name “The Journey” you think of either “Steve Perry” or “Open Arms“, right? Right!

Well in case you don’t know (livin’ under the rock, have you?), Steve Perry left the band way back in 1996, Steve Augeri (Steve’s replacement?) left in ‘06 and the latest so far, Jeff Scott Soto was let go this year.

So, here’s another pinoy record that will make all Filipinos proud! The newest lead vocalist of The Journey, as announced in their official website, is Arnel Pineda… True blue pinoy from Quezon City!

The story of Arnel Pineda being chosen to be The Journey’s vocalist very much reminded me of the 2001 Mark Wahlberg film, The Rockstar.

When it was time for JOURNEY to look for a new lead singer, the internet came to their rescue. Guitarist Neal Schon wanted someone new to the music business, so he turned to YouTube. After finding Arnel singing “Faithfully,” he knew he had found the perfect frontman.

MANILA, Philippine -- The Canadian province of British Columbia has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Philippines to help fill its need for 350,000 skilled workers over the next 12 years.

The two-year MOU, signed between British Columbia’s Economic Development Minister Colin Hansen and Labor Secretary Arturo Brion January 29 in Vancouver, will help strengthen relations between B.C. employers and Philippine recruiters by providing more effective access to foreign workers, particularly those needed for temporary work in the tourism and hospitality, retail, and construction industries.

Although the MOU’s focus is on temporary workers, it does not prevent workers from being recruited on a permanent basis. The agreement also does not apply to live-in caregivers.

The Canadian province of and the Philippine government will work with Filipino recruiting agencies.

According to a background provided by Canada’s embassy here, the recruiters will ensure that potential workers pass the medical examination required by that country for temporary or permanent residents, don’t have a criminal record or outstanding custody or divorce dispute that might make them ineligible to become residents, have satisfactory English language skills, and possess the skills and knowledge sought by potential employers.

“Nothing in the MOU prevents British Columbia employers from recruiting workers in the Philippines on their own as long as they do so under the Philippine Labor Code,” it said.

“Employers, not employees, are responsible for paying the costs related to hiring workers. It is illegal to charge a person seeking work in B.C.,” it added.

At the same time, it noted that only agencies licensed by the Philippine government may recruit for work overseas.

“The British Columbia economy is growing at a rate faster than the overall Canadian economy and definitely faster than the overall American economy,” said Hansen in a statement released by the Canadian embassy here. “To maintain this momentum, we need to attract 30,000 workers per year with specific skills from outside B.C.”

Brion, for his part, welcomed the partnership. “Our agreement with B.C. truly confirms the opening of a new chapter of sharing Filipino labor with other countries through contract migration,” he said.

Earl Wilde, president of the B.C. Hotel Association, said the agreement will provide B.C. employers “effective, quicker access to foreign workers…We are looking to attract temporary or permanent immigrants in areas where we have labor shortages.”

The same background said that the MOU is commitment under WorkBC, the provincial action plan to address skills shortages. It also said that the Philippines is the third largest source country for immigrants to B.C.

“With more than a million new job openings expected over the next dozen years, and only 650,000 young people in the K-12 school system, meeting labor market demand will be a key challenge over the coming decade. It is anticipated that, by 2011, the majority of Canada’s labor force growth will be from immigration,” the backgrounder said.

British Columbia is the second jurisdiction in North America after Saskatchewan to formalize a partnership for recruiting skilled workers from the Philippines.

WorkBC noted that the Philippine government “has adopted a deliberate policy of labor export for more than three decades, giving it a number of advantages as a partner country for an agreement like this.”

B.C. is actively involved in foreign worker recruitment activities through programs such as the Provincial Nominee Program (established in 2001) and immigrant integration activities such as B.C.’s Skills Connect Program (helping new immigrants find jobs that match their skills, knowledge, and experience).

TAGBILARAN CITY â€" He should have been out swimming with his family in Cebu on his 35th birthday on Jan. 17. Instead, Ronaldo Sendrijas was bathed in his own blood after being shot along Graham Avenue in Tagbilaran City in Bohol.

Two bullets fired from a 9-mm pistol felled Sendrijas at about 9:20 p.m. on the sidewalk in front of Paz Pharmacy. Both hit the napeâ€"one exited from the mouth while the other lodged in the abdomen.

He had just emerged from Ramiro Community Hospital to buy medicine for his elder sister Aileen who had given birth to a boy a day earlier. Two killers, however, had other plans.

Sendrijasâ€"ex-seminarian, ex-rebel and ex-detaineeâ€"became the latest entry on the list of mysterious deaths that befall militants in the country.

The third of seven children born to a farmer and a teacher, Sendrijas became one of the most recognizable names in the communist underground in Bohol in the last decade.

His mother Margarita said Ronaldo was an intelligent boy. He was second honor in Grade 6 and valedictorian at the San Jose National High School in Inabanga town. It did not surprise her that he considered becoming a priest when he enrolled at a seminary in Dumaguete City and later at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary in Tagbilaran.

“He was religious,” she recalled when interviewed at Coop Funeral Homes where her son’s body lay.

Unlike most boys, Ronald was active in church activities and was a lecturer for the Christian Community Formation Course hosted by the barangay chapel, she said.

Sendrijas, however, gradually gravitated toward activist causes. He was a founding member of the Association of Concerned Inabangnons, which resisted a plan to sell Inabanga water to Cebu.

Margarita did not notice her son’s increasing disillusionment with the system. He did not discuss it with her but somehow she was no longer surprised when she first learned that he had embraced the path of revolution, she said.

Sendrijas was seen in a daring raid on a police detachment in Sta. Fe in Danao town on Dec. 14, 1999.

About 50 members of the New People’s Army (NPA) in Army uniforms approached the 702nd Philippine National Police Provincial Mobile Group detachment in an Isuzu Elf. They were bringing two roasted pigs, soft drinks and beer to the Christmas celebration of a military camp in neighboring Carmen town.

A policeman, who was a neighbor of Sendrijas’, identified him among the group and immediately alerted his comrades who opened fire. Two lawmen died, while two others, including the detachment commander, were wounded.

Partly because he was good copy to media because of his seminary background, Sendrijas seemed to grow in the eyes of the people, including the military. He allegedly served as secretary general of the Central Visayas Regional Party Committee, although knowledgeable sources said he did not really occupy such position.

“Not really big,” a source once commented.

Sendrijas was arrested in Cebu in 2003 in connection with the rebellion cases filed against him in Bohol and Cebu but was released in 2006 after posting bail.

Coming in from the cold, however, has never been easy.

Life above ground

Like many of those who resurfaced after life in the underground, Sendrijas could not shake off labels of the past.

When the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) provincial chair Victor Olayvar was killed on Sept. 7, 2006, Sendrijas was implicated as a suspect by Supt. Arturo Evangelista, then Bohol police chief, who cited an alleged NPA purge.

Sendrijas angrily denied the charge, saying he considered Olayvar “an idol.”

He was again implicated in the killing of one Bebiano Divinagracia on Nov. 26, 2007. A day after the killing, soldiers went to San Jose looking for Sendrijas.

He, however, seemed determined to turn a new leaf, taking his causes to a new arena.

On Nov. 29, 2007, he took his oath as barangay secretary of San Jose, a month after the barangay elections. “He was chosen because of his capabilities and for what he has done in our place,” said barangay chair Escolastico Socorin.

Socorin, who said Sendrijas was a neighbor, revealed that they shared “similar observations” and “new perspectives” for the village. By appointing Sendrijas, he said he was giving him hope despite his past.

Accusations

Like other victims before him, the killing of Sendrijas has triggered an exchange of accusations between militants and the military.

Bayan said only the military campaign under Oplan Bantay Laya II would gain much from his death.

“It is a chilling message to ex-political detainees, surrenderees and even legal organization members and leaders that they would only be spared from extrajudicial killings if they would denounced their principle, surrender and cooperate with the military,” it said in a statement.

Sgt. Narciso Tabaniag, a retired soldier involved in counterinsurgency propaganda, claimed Sendrijas might have been killed by former comrades because he decided to lie low.

As far as the Tagbilaran police is concerned, identifying the culprits is anybody’s guess. “There is not even a clear description of the suspect,” noted Chief Insp. Jacinto Cesar, city police chief.

He admitted that the killers were “experienced,” judging by the manner of killing.

There seems little indication that the murder will soon be solved. For the moment, those who love Sendrijas can only reflect on the life he lived.

“What you started for the people will continue to burn in the struggle for freedom,” declared a wreath sent by the Bohol Detention and Rehabilitation Center detainees.

Sendrijas’ village may be in mourning but this does not mean the end of his dreams. “This has only served to inspire us,” Socorin said.

On his last day on earth, Sendrijas showed that service came first. “We had expected him to be in Cebu so we could go swimming to celebrate his birthday,” Margarita said. But he chose to help his sister at the hospital, she said.

On Friday, his remains were to be brought to the San Jose barangay hall, the first time in the village that a vigil were to be held for a barangay secretary. He will be buried today.

LOS ANGELES -- A former top Hollywood studio lawyer and his wife were on Monday sentenced by a Los Angeles judge after admitting to mistreating their Filipino maid in a case of "modern-day slavery," a court heard.

US District Judge Dale Fischer ordered James Jackson, 53, a former vice-president of legal affairs at Sony Pictures to perform 200 hours of community service for admitting a charge of alien harboring.

Jackson's wife Elizabeth, 54, was given a three-year jail term after pleading guilty to a charge of forced labor.

In passing sentence, Fischer said Elizabeth Jackson had treated the victim, former schoolteacher Nena Ruiz, worse than her dog.

Ruiz was forced to eat three-day-old food and to sleep on a dog basket after working 18 hours a day. Over the course of several months' employment between 2001 and 2002 she was paid only 300 dollars.

"These defendants subjected their victim to what amounts to modern-day slavery," said Justice Department prosecutor Wan Kim after the Jacksons pleaded guilty in August last year.

In a related civil lawsuit, Ruiz said Elizabeth Jackson regularly slapped her and pulled her hair.

The Jacksons also threatened to turn her over to immigration authorities if she left them, Ruiz said. Ruiz finally fled the Jacksons after she was hit in the mouth with a water bottle in February 2002.

Elizabeth Jackson said in a letter read out in court on Monday that she took full responsibility for her actions.

"In my life I have always tried and strived to do the right thing," she said. "I failed in this case."

Defense lawyers argued against a jail sentence for Jackson, saying the couple had already suffered enough by being forced to declare bankruptcy.

However Fischer denied a request for home confinement, telling the court: "It seems she treated her dog much better than she treated her victim."

Ruiz won 825,000 dollars in damages from her former employers at a 2004 civil trial in Los Angeles.

TOKYO - British rock band Led Zeppelin enjoyed jamming together again last year in a charity concert but won't have another session before September at the earliest, lead guitarist Jimmy Page said in Tokyo on Monday.

A successful reunion show in London in December rekindled hopes of a world tour, but Page said that singer Robert Plant's tour with U.S. country singer Alison Krauss is keeping him busy for now.

"I can assure you the amount of work that we put into the O2 (concert), for ourselves rehearsing and the staging of it, was probably what you put into a world tour," Page said.

But, "Robert Plant also had a parallel project running and he's really busy with that project, certainly until September, so I can't give you any news."

Page, in Tokyo to promote a greatest hits release, painted a happy picture of the reunion.

"It was exhilarating, fantastic, every week was a week to look forward to," he said. "We did the show and it was great."

The band, formed in 1968 by Page, Plant, bass guitarist John Paul Jones and drummer John Bonham, became arguably the world's biggest rock group by the early 1970s.

Their fourth album, released in 1971, included their most famous song, "Stairway to Heaven," while the band has sold an estimated 300 million albums worldwide.

The group decided to break up shortly after Bonham died in September 1980, although Page and Plant collaborated at times over the years.

Plant, Page and Jones performed together in London before about 20,000 fans on December 10, with Bonham's son Jason on the drums.

When the concert was announced, the Internet site selling tickets crashed with applications, while the possibility of a new world tour had fans around the globe excited.

Page said after many years the song indeed remained the same.

"That is what was so thrilling really -- to come together after all this time and find that there was so much chemistry and so much electricity involved in these four characters."

The Philippine boxing scene is in for another high profile match as our country's very own Z "The Dream" Gorres goes toe to toe against the sensational Armenian slugger Vic "The Raging Bull" Darchinyan this February 2 at the Cebu Waterfront Hotel. Titled "Now or Never", the heavily-hyped event is set for an important prize: the right to face the current IBF World Super Flyweight champion, Dmitri Kirilov, for a title match.

"Now or Never", a promotion of Solar Sports in cooperation with ALA Promotion, will begin at 6pm, Philippine time. Not to disappoint Filipino boxing fans around the world, the event will also be "aired" over the Internet in real time via the neTVision website (http://www.netvision.com.ph). As more and more boxing enthusiasts use their computer for entertainment, neTVision allows easy access to the live fight for those who do not have cable TV (or to those whose international cable licenses do not carry the fight).

Z Gorres is rapidly becoming one of the country's finest boxers. In his last battle, he fashioned out an 8th round TKO win against Eric Ortiz - effectively showing the world his boxing ability. With a record of 27 wins (15 by knockout) and only 2 losses, Gorres is attributed with "great stamina and good footwork". His 12-round battle against Fernando Montiel was well-perceived by the boxing community and was a showcase of his in-ring talent - giving the world a glimpse of things to come.

On the other end, the Armenian Vic Darchinyan is known as a heavy puncher and is an absolute terror in the ring. He started his career with a 28-0 record until he met his match against another Filipino sensation, Nonito Donaire, earning him his first professional loss. Even though reeling from the defeat, Darchinyan remains a formidable opponent - 23 of his fights were won by knockouts. His upcoming battle with Gorres will be a statement fight, a sweet revenge against Filipino boxers if he wins.

The event will also feature the Philippines' various boxing talents. The undercards include Mark Jason Melliguen of Bacolod taking on Tia Koswara of Indonesia; Romeo Jakosalem against William Kickitt of Australia; and James Bacon of Mandaue City versus Diosdado Perez of Manila. "Now or Never" will also hold matches for up-and-coming local fighters: Rollen Del Castillo, Fabio Marfa, and Alejandro Belonguel of Mandaue City; Ruel Cuizon of Manila; JV Tuazon of New Jersey, USA; and Rey Villar of Sultan Kudarat.

Will Gorres reign supreme in this clash of boxing titans? Or will "The Raging Bull" trample our local hero and regain his lost glory? For both fighers, it's now or never.

JAKARTA, Indonesia - Suharto, the U.S. Cold War ally who led one of the 20th century's most brutal dictatorships over 32 years that saw up to a million political opponents killed, died Sunday. He was 86.

The former leader and army general had been ailing in a hospital in the capital, Jakarta, since Jan. 4 when he was admitted with failing kidneys, heart and lungs. Doctors prolonged his life through dialysis and a ventilator, but he stopped breathing on his own overnight before slipping into a coma Sunday.

He was declared dead at 1:10 p.m. when his heart stopped. The cause of death was multiple-organ failure, Chief Presidential Dr. Marjo Subiandono said.

"My father passed away peacefully," sobbed Suharto's eldest daughter, Tutut. "May God bless him and forgive all of his mistakes."

A week of national mourning was declared by the office of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who was to oversee a state funeral after Suharto's body had been flown by a fleet of seven Air Force planes to be put in the family mausoleum.

In a televised address, Yudhoyono called on "the people of Indonesia to pay their last respects to one of Indonesia's best sons and national leader who has done very great service to his beloved nation."

Finally toppled by mass street protests in 1998, Suharto's departure opened the way for democracy in this predominantly Muslim nation of 235 million people and he withdrew from public life, rarely venturing from his comfortable villa on a leafy lane in the capital.

Suharto had ruled with a totalitarian dominance that saw soldiers stationed in every village, instilling a deep fear of authority across this Southeast Asian nation of some 6,000 inhabited islands that stretch across more than 3,000 miles.

Since being forced from power, he had been in and out of hospitals after strokes caused brain damage and impaired his speech. Blood transfusions and a pacemaker prolonged his life, but he suffered from lung, kidney, liver and heart problems.

Suharto was vilified as one of the world's most brutal rulers and was accused of overseeing a graft-ridden reign. But poor health â€" and continuing corruption, critics charge â€" kept him from court after he was chased from office by widespread unrest at the peak of the Asian financial crisis.

The bulk of political killings blamed on Suharto occurred in the 1960s, soon after he seized power. In later years, some 300,000 people were slain, disappeared or jailed in the independence-minded regions of East Timor, Aceh and Papua, human rights groups and the United Nations say.

Suharto's successors as head of state â€" B.J. Habibie, Abdurrahman Wahid, Megawati Sukarnoputri and Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono â€" vowed to end corruption that took root under Suharto, yet it remains endemic at all levels of Indonesian society.

With the court system paralyzed by corruption, the country has not confronted its bloody past. Rather than put on trial those accused of mass murder and multibillion-dollar theft, some members of the political elite consistently called for charges against Suharto to be dropped on humanitarian grounds.

Some noted Suharto also oversaw decades of economic expansion that made Indonesia the envy of the developing world. Today, nearly a quarter of Indonesians live in poverty, and many long for the Suharto era's stability, when fuel and rice were affordable.

But critics say Suharto squandered Indonesia's vast natural resources of oil, timber and gold, siphoning the nation's wealth to benefit his cronies and family like a mafia don.

Jeffrey Winters, associate professor of political economy at Northwestern University, said the graft effectively robbed "Indonesia of some of the most golden decades, and its best opportunity to move from a poor to a middle class country."

"When Indonesia does finally go back and redo history, (its people) will realize that Suharto is responsible for some of the worst crimes against humanity in the 20th century," Winters added.

Those who profited from Suharto's rule made sure he was never portrayed in a harsh light at home, Winters said, so even though he was an "iron-fisted, brutal, cold-blooded dictator," he was able to stay in his native country.

Like many Indonesians, Suharto used only one name. He was born on June 8, 1921, to a family of rice farmers in the village of Godean, in the dominant Indonesian province of Central Java.

When Indonesia gained independence from the Dutch in 1949, Suharto quickly rose through the ranks of the military to become a staff officer.

His career nearly foundered in the late 1950s, when the army's then-commander, Gen. Abdul Haris Nasution, accused him of corruption in awarding army contracts.

Absolute power came in September 1965 when the army's six top generals were murdered under mysterious circumstances, and their bodies dumped in an abandoned well in an apparent coup attempt.

Suharto, next in line for command, quickly asserted authority over the armed forces and promoted himself to four-star general.

Suharto then oversaw a nationwide purge of suspected communists and trade unionists, a campaign that stood as the region's bloodiest event since World War II until the Khmer Rouge established its gruesome regime in Cambodia a decade later. Experts put the number of deaths during the purge at between 500,000 and 1 million.

Over the next year, Suharto eased out of office Indonesia's first post-independence president, Sukarno, who died under house arrest in 1970. The legislature rubber-stamped Suharto's presidency and he was re-elected unopposed six times.

During the Cold War, Suharto was considered a reliable friend of Washington, which didn't oppose his violent occupation of Papua in 1969 and the bloody 1974 invasion of East Timor. The latter, a former Portuguese colony, became Asia's youngest country with a U.N.-sponsored plebiscite in 1999.

Even Suharto's critics agree his hard-line policies kept a lid on Indonesia's extremists. He locked up hundreds of suspected Islamic militants without trial, some of whom later carried out deadly suicide bombings with the al-Qaida-linked terror network Jemaah Islamiyah after the Sept. 11 attacks on the U.S.

Meanwhile, the ruling clique that formed around Suharto â€" nicknamed the "Berkeley mafia" after their American university, the University of California, Berkeley â€" transformed Indonesia's economy and attracted billions of dollars in foreign investment.

By the late 1980s, Suharto was describing himself as Indonesia's "father of development," taking credit for slowly reducing the number of abjectly poor and modernizing parts of the nation.

But the government also became notorious for unfettered nepotism, and Indonesia was regularly ranked as one of the world's most corrupt nations as Suharto's inner circle amassed fabulous wealth. The World Bank estimates 20 percent to 30 percent of Indonesia's development budget was embezzled during his rule.

Even today, Suharto's children and aging associates have considerable sway over the country's business, politics and courts. Efforts to recover the money have been fruitless.

Suharto's youngest son, Hutomo "Tommy" Mandala Putra, was released from prison in 2006 after serving a third of a 15-year sentence for ordering the assassination of a Supreme Court judge. Another son, Bambang Trihatmodjo, joined the Forbes list of wealthiest Indonesians in 2007, with $200 million from his stake in the conglomerate Mediacom.

Suharto's economic policies, based on unsecured borrowing by his cronies, dramatically unraveled shortly before he was toppled in May 1998. Indonesia is still recovering from what economists called the worst economic meltdown anywhere in 50 years.

State prosecutors accused Suharto of embezzling about $600 million via a complex web of foundations under his control, but he never saw the inside of a courtroom. In September 2000, judges ruled he was too ill to stand trial, though many people believed the decision really stemmed from the lingering influence of the former dictator and his family.

In 2007, Suharto won a $106 million defamation lawsuit against Time magazine for accusing the family of acquiring $15 billion in stolen state funds.

The former dictator told the news magazine Gatra in a rare interview in November 2007 that he would donate the bulk of any legal windfall to the needy, while he dismissed corruption accusations as "empty talk."

Suharto's wife of 49 years, Indonesian royal Siti Hartinah, died in 1996. The couple had three sons and three daughters.

Resourceful cousin Darren Lines, 23, grabbed Jenny’s £4.99 Marks & Spencer pants from a pile of washing, soaked them in water and flung them over the flames.

Fifteen-stone Jenny, 53, of Hartlepool, Cleveland, said: “I’m lucky my knickers are like a parachute! If they were skimpy they’d have been no use.”

Obama wins in SC, regaining momentum

By DAVID ESPO and CHARLES BABINGTON, Associated Press Writers
29 minutes ago

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Barack Obama routed Hillary Rodham Clinton in the racially charged South Carolina primary Saturday night, regaining campaign momentum in the prelude to a Feb. 5 coast-to-coast competition for more than 1,600 Democratic National Convention delegates.

"The choice in this election is not about regions or religions or genders," Obama said at a boisterous victory rally. "It's not about rich versus poor, young versus old and it's not about black versus white. It's about the past versus the future."

The audience chanted "Race doesn't matter" as it awaited Obama to make his appearance after rolling up 55 percent of the vote in a three-way race.

But it did, in a primary that shattered turnout records.

About half the voters were black, according to polling place interviews, and four out of five of them supported Obama. Black women turned out in particularly large numbers. Obama, the first-term Illinois senator, got about a quarter of the white vote while Clinton and former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina split the rest.

Clinton flew to Nashville as the polls closed, and looked ahead. "Now the eyes of the country turn to Tennessee and the other states voting on Feb. 5," she said, adding "millions and millions of Americans are going to have their voices heard."

Edwards finished a distant third, a sharp setback in the state where he was born and scored a primary victory in his first presidential campaign four years ago. Even so, he vowed to remain in the race, his goal, he said, to "give voice to all those whose voices aren't being heard."

The victory was Obama's first since he won the kickoff Iowa caucuses on Jan. 3. Clinton, a New York senator and former first lady, scored an upset in the New Hampshire primary a few days later. They split the Nevada caucuses, she winning the turnout race, he gaining a one-delegate margin. In an historic race, she hopes to become the first woman to occupy the White House, and Obama is the strongest black contender in history.

The South Carolina primary marked the end of the first phase of the campaign for the Democratic nomination, a series of single-state contests that winnowed the field, conferred co-front-runner status on Clinton and Obama but had relatively few delegates at stake.

That all changes in 10 days' time, when New York, Illinois and California are among the 15 states holding primaries in a virtual nationwide primary. Another seven states and American Samoa will hold Democratic caucuses on the same day.

Obama took a thinly veiled swipe at Clinton in his remarks.

"We are up against conventional thinking that says your ability to lead as president comes from longevity in Washington or proximity to the White House. But we know that real leadership is about candor, and judgment, and the ability to rally Americans from all walks of life around a common purpose â€" a higher purpose," Obama said.

Looking ahead to Feb. 5, he added that "nearly half the nation will have the chance to join us in saying that we are tired of business-as-usual in Washington, we are hungry for change, and we are ready to believe again."

Nearly complete returns showed Obama winning 55 percent of the vote, Clinton gaining 27 percent. Edwards had 18 percent and won only his home county of Oconee.

Obama also gained 25 convention delegates, Clinton won 12 and Edwards eight.

Overall, Clinton has 249 delegates, followed by Obama with 167 and Edwards with 58.

Obama also gained an endorsement from Caroline Kennedy, who likened the Illinois senator to her late father, President John F. Kennedy.

"I have never had a president who inspired me the way people tell me that my father inspired them," she wrote on The New York Times op-ed page. "But for the first time, I believe I have found a man who could be that president â€" and not just for me, but for a new generation of Americans."

All three contenders campaigned in South Carolina on primary day, but only Obama and Edwards arranged to speak to supporters after the polls closed. Clinton left for Tennessee as the polls were closing. After playing a muted role in the earlier contests, the issue of race dominated an incendiary week that included a shift in strategy for Obama, a remarkably bitter debate and fresh scrutiny of former President Clinton's role in his wife's campaign.

Each side accused the other of playing the race card, sparking a controversy that frequently involved Bill Clinton.

"They are getting votes, to be sure, because of their race or gender. That's why people tell me Hillary doesn't have a chance of winning here," the former president said at one stop as he campaigned for his wife, strongly suggesting that blacks would not support a white alternative to Obama.

Clinton campaign strategists denied any intentional effort to stir the racial debate. But they said they believe the fallout has had the effect of branding Obama as "the black candidate," a tag that could hurt him outside the South.

Nearly six in 10 voters said the former president's efforts for his wife was important to their choice, and among them, slightly more favored Obama than the former first lady.

Overall, Obama defeated Clinton among both men and women.

The exit polls showed the economy was the most important issue in the race. About one quarter picked health care. And only one in five said it was the war in Iraq, underscoring the extent to which the once-dominant issue has faded in the face of financial concerns.

The exit poll was conducted by Edison Media Research and Mitofsky International for The Associated Press and the networks.

Well Soccer is much popular in Europe as they consider these as their top sport, even in the US Soccer is likewise patronized unlike in Pinas our folks were hooked on basketball,Billards, tennis apil pa sungka ug dama and now boxing is rating very well and one reason is because of the rising popularity of pinoy boxers through out the globe, We have three superstar pugs in bohol one is Ceasar Amonsot of tagbilaran, AJ Banal of Corella and the emerging Candijay sensation Rey Bautista, not to mention the super PACMAN.

LOS ANGELES â€" Magandang araw po sa inyong lahat! Sana ay nasa mabuti kayong kalagayan.

Matatapos na namin ang ikalawang lingo ng training dito sa L.A. and so far so good.

LAS VEGAS - Fire forced guests and staff to evacuate the 3,000-room Monte Carlo Resort & Casino in Las Vegas on Friday, quickly engulfing parts of the upper floors, facade and roof before being brought under control.

There were no serious injuries in the blaze, first reported at about 11 a.m. (2 p.m. EST) in the south tower of the huge hotel complex on the Vegas strip, but a dozen people were treated for smoke inhalation, authorities said.

The Monte Carlo -- owned by MGM Mirage, the world's second-largest casino operator -- was quickly evacuated and the strip was shut down in both directions, jamming traffic back onto Interstate-15 as embers and debris fell into the street.

Television images showed flames sweeping across the 35-story hotel's white and black facade, with dark smoke belching into the sky as fire crews scaled ladders.

The blaze was contained and largely extinguished in about an hour but authorities said the hotel and casino would remain closed until they were fully inspected.

Local media reports said the fire may have started on the hotel's roof, where welders were working, but authorities said the cause had not been determined and was under investigation.

The fire burned "just on the upper couple of floors" and the damage may be just to the exterior of the building, said Gordon Absher, a spokesman for MGM Mirage.

"We've been going door to door. All of our emergency procedures are working," Absher said of the evacuation, adding that some guests were being relocated to other MGM properties in the area, including the New York-New York and MGM Grand.

A fire in November 1980 at one of MGM's more famous properties, the MGM Grand, claimed more than 80 lives and injured nearly 700 people.

MGM owns several luxury hotels in Las Vegas, including the Bellagio.

The Monte Carlo, which opened in 1996, was built at a cost of more than $300 million and modeled after the Place du Casino in Monte Carlo.

Amenities include a grand lobby, spa and fitness facilities, shopping mall and 21,000-square-foot (1,950-square-meter) pool area with a tropical theme.
