Quotable Quotes / Re: Quote For The Day

There is no character, howsoever good and fine, but it can be destroyed by ridicule, howsoever poor and witless. Observe the ass, for instance: his character is about perfect, he is the choicest spirit among all the humbler animals, yet see what ridicule has brought him to. Instead of feeling complimented when we are called an ass, we are left in doubt. --Mark Twain

Villagers have also mistaken ordinary decomposition processes for the supernatural. "For example, though laypeople might assume that a body would decompose immediately, if the coffin is well sealed and buried in winter, putrefaction might be delayed by weeks or months; intestinal decomposition creates bloating which can force blood up into the mouth, making it look like a dead body has recently sucked blood," writes LiveScience's Bad Science columnist Benjamin Radford. "These processes are well understood by modern doctors and morticians, but in medieval Europe were taken as unmistakable signs that vampires were real and existed among them."

There's no consensus yet on when the bodies found in Poland were buried. According to Jacek Pierzak, one of the archaeologists on the site, the skeletons were found with no jewelry, belt buckles, buttons or any other artifacts that might assist in providing a burial date.
#20927
The practice of decapitating the bodies of suspected vampires before burial was common in Slavic countries during the early Christian era, when pagan beliefs were still widespread.

In fact, their belief in vampires stemmed from both superstition about death and lack of knowledge about decomposition. Most vampire stories of history tend to follow a certain pattern where an individual or family dies of some unfortunate event or disease; before science could explain such deaths, the people chose to blame them on "vampires."
#20928
Hers was a typical case of an accusation of vampirism following some calamity, such as a plague or a devastating crop failure. Accusing an individual of being a vampire was a not-uncommon way of finding a scapegoat for an otherwise unexplained disaster.

In other cases, the body of a suspected vampire might be staked to the ground, pinning the corpse into place with a stake made of metal or wood. In 2012, archaeologists in Bulgaria found two skeletons with iron rods piercing their chests, indicating they may have been considered vampires.
#20929
By keeping the head separated from the body, according to ancient superstition, the "undead" wouldn't be able to rise from the grave to terrorize the living. Decapitation was one way of achieving that; another way was hanging the person by a rope attached to the neck until, over time, the decaying body simply separated from the head.

There were other, equally bizarre ways of dealing with vampire burials, according to research published by forensic anthropologist Matteo Borrini. He cites the case of a woman who died during a 16th-century plague in Venice, Italy. The woman was apparently buried with a brick wedged tightly in her open mouth, a popular medieval method of keeping suspected vampires from returning to feed on the blood of the living. The woman's grave might be the earliest known vampire burial ever found.

Archaeologists in Poland believe they've made a startling discovery: a group of vampire graves.

The graves were discovered during the construction of a roadway near the Polish town of Gliwice, where archaeologists are more accustomed to finding the remains of World War II soldiers, according to The Telegraph.

But instead of soldiers, the graves contained skeletons whose heads had been severed and placed on their legs. This indicated to the archaeologists that the bodies had been subject to a ritualized execution designed to ensure the dead stayed dead, The Telegraph reports.

Interrogation

He said as the city has been locked down, authorities have also been placed in full alert.

The police have also placed the arrested suspect under interrogation in the hope of extracting information that could lead to the capture of the other gang members.

While human rights groups have criticized Duterte for virtually allowing police to use extrajudicial means against crimes, which is believed to have inspired killings of crime suspects by vigilantes, many residents and officials of the city have expressed support for the mayor’s forceful way of dealing with criminality.

The Commission on Human Rights has investigated extrajudicial killings of crime suspects in the city which Duterte had dismissed.

The Davao Death Squad is believed to be responsible for the vigilante killings, but its existence has been consistently denied by authorities here. Judy Quiros, Inquirer Mindanao

Dead men

On Thursday, three members of the kidnap gang were killed in a clash with policemen in the city as they were trying to collect a P15-million ransom from Manila-based businesswoman Sally Chua, who was kidnapped in Quezon City a few weeks ago.

Another member of the gang was arrested by police here as the law enforcers swooped down on a branch of Allied Bank here where the ransom payment was supposed to have taken place.

It was learned that at least 15 gang members traveled all the way from Manila to this city on board three Montero SUVs after Chua convinced them to come to this city for the ransom payment.

Senior Supt. Ronald dela Rosa, city police chief, said Chua had hoped that the police here will discover the kidnappers’ presence and she would be freed.

Chua, Dela Rosa said, had hoped that Duterte’s tough stance against criminals will help her end her ordeal in the hands of her kidnappers.

DAVAO CITYâ€"Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has ordered the police and the military to lock down the city as pursuit operations against at least 10 fleeing suspected kidnappers, whose days are numbered, intensified.

Duterte said all points of exit and entry to the city have been sealed and only after thorough inspections can motorists be allowed to leave or get into the city.

He said authorities are serious about the manhunt and anybody defying the tightened inspection procedure would be dealt with accordingly.

Duterte said he wants the suspects captured at all cost, even if it required policemen to shoot them on sight.

“I told you criminals, don’t come to this city,” he said.

“Given the gravity of the allegations, we’re keeping such investigation under wraps until NBI completes its evidence gathering and evaluation,” De Lima said.

Asked whether the NBI would summon lawmakers and officials mentioned in affidavits of witnesses, De Lima said it would still depend on results of the investigators’ evaluation of evidence.

De Lima added that she would also study the possible issuance of lookout bulletin order against Napoles and her brother, Reynald Lim, who was also implicated in the scam. --with Christina Mendez

Luy, Sunas and another whistleblower further alleged that JLN forged signatures of “fictitious individuals” in organizing POPDFI and other NGOs, including Kaupdanan Para sa Magsasaka Foundation, Social Foundation, Pangkabuhayan Foundation and Masaganang Ani Foundation, for this racket.

Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said the NBI probe on the alleged scam is an offshoot of Luy’s kidnapping charges against Napoles that was already dismissed by the investigating prosecutor.

She also said records of earlier congressional inquiries into the fertilizer fund scam were already obtained by the NBI for review. But she refused to give more details.
#20941
Sunas said Napoles discovered that “the reason why the amount of PDAF given to her by a certain senator was small because Benhur had hidden transactions.”

Napoles discovered Luy’s hidden transactions during a meeting on Dec. 19, 2012 at their office in Discovery Center in Ortigas, Pasig City.

Sunas claimed that Napoles put up their foundations to receive government funds that were allegedly remitted to her many bank accounts.

For instance, she alleged that their bogus NGOs benefited from the P900-million Malampaya Fund but “no deliveries of supplies were ever made and that fake liquidation papers were submitted by the implementing agencies.” The same modus was applied in the P728-million Fertilizer Fund.
#20942
Marcos, on the other hand, said he never had dealings with Napoles.

“I don’t know Ms. Napoles. I have never spoken to her or even met her and so I had no personal dealings with her,” Marcos said in a text message.

Sunas did not specify whether the offices of the two senators were aware of the allegedly fraudulent transactions by JLN.

She told investigators it was a concealed deal with the coordinator by Benhur Luy, Napoles’ personal assistant who was rescued by agents last March 22, that angered the businesswoman and led to the filing of kidnapping charges.
#20943
She said she was clueless about how her name cropped up in the NBI investigation and cannot think of any motive behind the story.

She also called for an impartial probe on the allegation.

“I stand by the transparent and wise utilization of my PDAF in my one town, one classroom project, rural livelihood, culture and education health services,” Legarda said, referring to the Priority Development Assistance Fund.
#20944
The names of Legarda and Marcos appeared in the affidavit of Merlina Pablo Sunas â€" one of the six supposed whistle-blowers in the scam that implicated Janet Lim Napoles of JLN Group of Companies â€" submitted to the NBI.

Sunas, Napoles’ trusted employee of 12 years whom she appointed president of the allegedly bogus non-government organization People’s Organization for Progress and Development Foundation Inc. (POPDFI), claimed that a certain “Ma’am Maya” served as JLN’s “coordinator for Senators Legarda and Marcos.”

Legarda and Marcos yesterday expressed disbelief over their alleged involvement in the scam.

“I don’t know anything about it. My God,” Legarda told The STAR.

Left-Handers Day History

On 13th August 1992 the Club launched International Left-Handers Day, an annual event when left-handers everywhere can celebrate their sinistrality and increase public awareness of the advantages and disadvantages of being left-handed. This event is now celebrated worldwide, and in the U.K. alone there were over 20 regional events to mark the day in 2001- including left-v-right sports matches, a left-handed tea party, pubs using left-handed corkscrews where patrons drank and played pub games with the left hand only, and nationwide "Lefty Zones" where left-handers creativity, adaptability and sporting prowess were celebrated, whilst right-handers were encouraged to try out everyday left-handed objects to see just how awkward it can feel using the wrong equipment!

These events have contributed more than anything else to the general awareness of the difficulties and frustrations left-handers experience in everyday life, and have successfully led to improved product design and greater consideration of our needs by the right-handed majority - although there is still a long way to go!!

More at: http://www.lefthandersday.com/
#20971
But not all of the myths about left-handers are negative. One myth suggests they are more creative and smarter as a group than their right-handed peers.  So far scientific research has yet to find any truth to these claims.  In fact, a 2013 survey out of New Zealand found that personality wise; lefties and righties were the same.

Life might be a little more complicated for left-handers when it comes to cutting a piece of paper or opening a bottle of wine, but it seems to be a good sign if you’re trying to make it to the White House.

Every year on August 13th, lefties around the world celebrate their hand preference.  It’s been happening since 1992 and raises the awareness of the difficulties left-handers face every day in life.
#20972
However, if you’re born with a preference towards your left hand…you can be trained to use your right. But why would anyone actually do that?

Maybe because people believe in myths like, right-handed people live longer healthier lives.  Or that it’s difficult for left-handed kids to learn how to write the alphabet. Or maybe they think lefties are clumsy.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, left-handedness was considered a disability and children were taught to use their right hands.  Even today the popular website Thesaurus.com describes left-handed as awkward or sinister.
#20973
Why are so few of us left-handed?   The reality is, we really don’t know.  One theory is that handedness could be a result of genetics.

Scientists say there are two genes associated with handedness.  One is the D gene - it promotes right-hand preference.  The other is the C gene…it has the ability to promote a preference for either hand.  The D gene, however, is more frequent in the population.  But when the C gene is present there’s a 50 percent chance that a person could be right or left-handed.

Another theory on handedness has to do with our brains. They’re made up of two halves.  If the left half of your brain is dominant, then you’re most likely right-handed.  But with lefties, it’s more complex.  Seventy percent of left-handers are also left-brain dominant. The other 30 percent of lefties have right-side dominant brains or the dominance is evenly distributed between both sides.
#20974
First, did you know that five out of the last seven United States presidents were left-hand dominant? In 1992, all three major presidential candidates were left-handed. Four years later in 1996, the top three candidates for president were again lefties. Of the three, Senator Bob Dole was the only one who was originally right-handed.  He learned to use his left hand after a World War II injury paralyzed his right hand. Then in 2008, long-time Senator John McCain campaigned against then Senator Barack Obama for the White House.  And if you haven't guessed it already…they're both left-handed.

About 90 percent of people in the world today are right-handed.  That makes life for the other ten percent who are left-handed a little more complicated, including, by the way, the President of the United States.

Every day, left-handed folks quietly face obstacles most right-handed people will never know.  It could be something as simple as driving a car, or using a can opener or a pair of scissors.

In this Just Explain It, we’ll look at the truths and expel myths about left-handed people.

The Village Idiot
by Francis Duggan

There is a Village idiot in every little town
A poor not too with it fellow for others to put down
Some people find it enjoyable to others to be cruel
A fair go for all to all never applies in a town where bullies rule
Pity the Village Idiot the small town's favourite put down boy
The mocking and the taunting of him the bullies do enjoy
Disrespect for the vulnerable begins at a young age
The local teenage bully never grows into a sage
In every small Town and Village a Village Idiot reside
Where the constant tauntings of bullies erodes his sense of pride
Most small town teenage bullies as bullies do remain
If not open to enlightenment insights they never gain
They find enjoyment in their cruelty at least that's how it does seem
And from the poor Village Idiot they strip all self esteem.

Halifax Explosion

Among the worst rail disasters in Canadian history was near Mont-Saint-Hilaire, Quebec on June 29, 1864 when a passenger train traveling to Montreal from Quebec City failed to stop as it approached an open swing bridge over the Richelieu River and plunged into the water, killing an estimated 99 people.

The blast from Lac-Megantic’s train crash is also among the deadliest in Canada since the Halifax explosion on Dec. 6, 1917, when the French munitions freighter Mont-Blanc collided with a relief ship in the city’s harbor. The Mont-Blanc caught fire and exploded, devastating Halifax and Dartmouth. The blast killed 1,963 people, injured 9,000 and destroyed 1,600 buildings, and left 6,000 people homeless, according to Public Safety Canada.
#20979
That toll would put the Quebec incident as the deadliest train disaster since Jan. 21, 1910, when the back half of a Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd. (CP) passenger train derailed, killing 63 at Spanish River, Ontario. The train, heading for Minneapolis, came off the tracks after it struck the end of a bridge, according to a government database.

Lac-Megantic’s fatalities surpass other train disasters in Canada in the past century, including a Dec. 27, 1942 accident when a troop train smashed into the rear of a packed passenger train in darkness at a station in Almonte, Ontario, killing 36.

A Sept. 1, 1947 crash between two passenger trains in Dugald, Manitoba that killed 31 people, and a collision between a Canadian National Railway Co. (CNR) freight train and a VIA Rail passenger train near Hinton, Alberta on Feb. 8, 1986. That killed 23 people, according to the database.

The rising death toll from the July 6 train derailment and explosion in Lac-Megantic, Quebec has made the incident the worst Canadian train disaster in more than 103 years.

A Montreal, Maine & Atlantic Railway Ltd. train carrying 72 carloads of crude rolled from an overnight parking spot into the town, about 250 kilometers (155 miles) east of Montreal, where it derailed and exploded, razing about 30 buildings. Twenty bodies have been recovered and a total of about 50 people are “probably dead,” Chief Inspector Michel Forget of the Surete du Quebec police, said yesterday.

A wide variety of explanations and interpretations of the Aztec practice of human sacrifice have been proposed by modern scholars.

Religious theories have been proposed explaining the practice as the product of religious beliefs about the need to sustain the universe through the spilling of human blood.

Political theories have been proposed explaining human sacrifice as a political tool for intimidating and controlling subordinate or potentially hostile peoples.

Socio-psychological theories link the practice of human sacrifice to unconscious factors, such as response to traumatic events.

Ecological theories human sacrifice as a response to population pressures.

Dietary theories link the practice of human sacrifice to the subsequent cannibalization of the victims and the use of their flesh as a source of protein. --Wiki

Human sacrifice was a religious practice characteristic of pre-Columbian Aztec civilization, as well as of other mesoamerican civilizations such as the Maya and the Zapotec. The extent of the practice is debated by modern scholars.

Spanish explorers, soldiers and clergy who had contact with the Aztecs between 1517, when an expedition from Cuba first explored the Yucatan, and 1521, when Hernan Cortes conquered the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan, made observations of and wrote reports about the practice of human sacrifice. --Wiki

They were not killed humanely, if there is such a thing; their hearts were carved out of their chests, and then they were decapitated. If you’ve seen the Mel Gibson film Apocalypto, you’ve seen an accurate depiction of this form of sacrifice.

George Carlin referred to this event as “theater.” By the time the farce was over, the spectators walked in blood up to their ankles. It ran like a thin red waterfall down the Pyramid’s steps and is said in the Aztecan literature to have reached all sides of the plaza’s stone pavement by the fourth day. The corpses, along with their hearts and heads, were sowed into the fields of a 6-mile radius as fertilizer for crops.

In 1487, the sixth temple to top the Great Pyramid of Tenochtitlan was consecrated under Ahuizotl, the eighth Aztec emperor. The ruins of the Pyramid complex are a tourist attraction in Mexico City. In order to appease the gods, especially Tezcatlipoca, the god of war, Ahuizotl ordered the sacrifice of over 84,000 prisoners from surrounding cultures. They were all executed in only 4 days. That’s 21,000 per day, or 875 per hour, or about 14 per minute.

"There is no legal or moral obligation [for her order] to do that," Harrington said. "But they certainly feel bad for the parishioners and the two churches where Sister Mary Anne worked, and I guess they thought this would mediate the theft."

Sister Edith Wyss, provincial minister of The Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity, issued a statement on Rapp's sentencing.

"We feel great empathy for the two church communities affected by her actions. Sister Mary Anne is a member of our community and we will continue to help and support her," the statement said.

"She was a terrific nun, other than this problem she had," he said. "She was really well-loved by the parishioners."

Harrington said that it is unlikely Rapp will ever be able to pay back the sum she owes the parishes.

"She is 68 years old, she has no assets, she took a vow of poverty," he said. "She has no means."

However, Rapp's order, The Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity, has offered by pay $10,000 each year of her probation to help return the money she owes to the two parishes, he said.

Rapp was placed on administrative leave from the church in February 2011. She was fired from her position, which she had held for more than 20 years, two months later.

She pleaded guilty to grand larceny in Orleans County Court in April, Cardone said.

"She was well-liked by the parishioners," Cardone said. "At some point, unfortunately, she developed this gambling habit and she was siphoning off funds to support it."

Rapp's attorney, James Harrington, told ABCNews.com Rapp would often gamble the money at Seneca Niagara Casino in Niagara Falls, N.Y.
