on the home front, my sister is going to have her chemo sessions in less than a week.  guess what the requirements are... absolutely no pets in the house or in the immediate surroundings.  our houses are attached, like a duplex.  we even have a common garage.  imagine the proximity of 31 cats and 4 dogs (2 are hers).  we have been advised to let go.  that left me sleepless for weeks.  maybe the dogs may have takers, but the cats would take an eternity.

i've been crying day in, day out, not only for my sister but at the prospect that we may have to put our pets down, the way some families did when a member went through chemo.  we take them all to a shelter or veterinarian and have them put to sleep forever.

our vet here in manila had told us that an 80-year-old woman had given up her cat and gave some donations to the vet clinic.  she said she wants to see to it that her cat is truly cared for, because she could go anytime at her age.

i understand gyod, loll.  di gyod lalim ning helpless pets nga mo-go, bisag kahibawo ta nga mo-go one day.  this is one of the most touching stories of man and pet i've ever come across.  i hope john finds real happiness soon.  he's too great a man not to deserve his own place of heaven on earth.

But after 14 days passed and no one claimed her, the dog and her adopted kitten were placed with a foster family.

Today, Goldie the dog and Kate the kitten are happy and healthy in their new home, and their unlikely friendship has touched many lives, including that of the animal control officer who found them.

"Good things happen all the time, but 'great' happens seldom," she said. "This is enough to keep me going the next six or eight months. This is one example of why I love my job."

Smith took the unlikely duo to local animal shelter Anderson County PAWS where the animals were placed in an enclosure together.

Shelter director Jessica Cwynar said the dog was likely going through a "pseudo-pregnancy," which allowed her to produce some milk. However, it wasn't enough to sustain the kitten, so shelter staff had to bottle-feed her.

When the story of the adorable pair broke, the shelter was inundated with offers of adoption from across the nation, but the Shih Tzu was well-groomed and had a collar so workers suspected she had an owner.

Dog Rescues Kitten, Then Adopts Her

The dog with her new kitten

When Anderson County Animal Control Officer Michelle Smith got a call in May about a whimpering dog, she expected to find a lost pet or injured stray. What she discovered at the bottom of the South Carolina ravine was a perfectly healthy Shih Tzu nursing a kitten.

"I think it would have been okay for the dog to walk down the hill," she told Fox Carolina. "But it just didn't want to leave the kitten."

hehehe, naay nag-rate ana sa ilang performance, and all that the education secretary (and necessarily his staff who did the computation) did was to base the pbb on what was submitted to him. ;D  opkors, you know who this rater must be. ;)

gipareha na lang bitaw unta tanan, across the board.  wa pay mahiubos.  this tends to be subjective man god.  tikang-a baya kaayo ang difference sa scale.
#20512
hasta sila banana republic nagtuliyok ang ulo anang pbb.  offices have different functions.  pananglitan rat catcher ka, okay, maihap ang rats nga imong nadakop.  pero kun ghostbuster, maihap bay ghosts?

the person responsible for the pbb is butch abad of the department of budget and management.  ambot ba uroy unsay nasulod sa iyang ulo.

sa case sa ilang department, will their performance be based on how much they saved for the government or how much they allotted to agencies?  as for office janitors, sure, it could be how clean the office is.  but what happens kun mga hugawan gyod ang office personnel?

the police is more delicate.  pilay naigo sa bala, pilay nadakop, o nawagtang ang crime sa usa ka lugar kay gi-wipeout tanang suspects.  uh-uh.

Schoep, The Dog Whose Internet Photo Touched Millions, Dies

In August of 2012, this photograph of John Unger and his dog Schoep sharing a moment in the waters of Lake Superior captured the hearts of millions. Unger would take Schoep into the lake every evening to ease the pain of his severe arthritis. Thousands soon donated to Schoep’s treatment which allowed Unger to have a little more time with a dog that changed his life. Schoep turned 20 on June 15th, he died 26 days later.

While millions of Brits swap sun hats for brollies today, this resourceful little frog was snapped sheltering from the rain - using a leaf as an UMBRELLA.

Photographer Penkdix Palme, 27, caught the tiny tree frog sheltering from the rain in his neighbour's back garden.

The aqua-phobic amphibian clung on to the stem of the green leaf for an impressive 30 minutes as it was lashed by wind and rain.

Gross doesn't give away the secret behind the illusion, leaving you guessing.

In fact, he ramped up the scare-factor by growling at the unsuspecting strangers as he walks around holding his sawed off legs.

One woman can be heard on the video of the prank saying 'That is so not cool.'

But the priceless reaction of most of the victims will have you doubling over laughing.

He first marches into a park, surprising two women sitting on a bench having a refreshment.

One of the women is so terrified when the man approached them in two separate pieces, she sprints at full pelt to a sandpit and falls over face first.

The other woman bolts to her parked car screaming, and then speeds away.

In the creepy footage, the legless torso then walks down the pavement and frightens another couple of women out for a stroll.

Positive Lightning
Photograph by Kara Swanson, My Shot

Lightning arcs from the top of a cloud to the horizon off the coast of the Bahamas. Lightning that comes from the top of the cloud can be positive lightning, which is rare but can be significantly more powerful than more common negative lightning. It can also strike farther from the cloud, up to 10 miles (16 kilometers) away.

Belgium's new first family

King Albert of Belgium abdicated earlier today after a 20-year reign, clearing the way for his son, Philippe, to take over as this fractured nation's seventh king later in the day.

The 79-year-old signed away his rights as the kingdom's largely ceremonial ruler at the Royal Palace in the presence of Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo, who holds the political power in this 183-year-old parliamentary democracy.

The country then got a new king as Prince Philippe, 53, took the oath before the nation's legislators at the Parliament building a short walk across the Royal Park in the heart of the city.

Final act: King Albert II of Belgium signs the deed of abdication, as Crown Prince Philippe (left) and Belgian Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo (right) look on during the ceremony at the Royal Palace

Philexport president Sergio R. Ortiz-Luis noted that the address was really more of a “report of what has been happening.”

“Nothing much new in the speech, so I wished there’d be more of road maps on infrastructure and timetables. I was also hoping to hear more on small and medium enterprises,” Ortiz-Luis explained.

“I was also hoping that there would be a mention of mining as well. But I’m happy that the President talked about tourism. Then again, it’s just a report of accomplishments and not a plan,” he said. “It’s especially crucial that President Aquino mention a more specific timetable because we’re already halfway through his administration.”

so that was it.  all that the guy needed was to show off.  his ego had been fed.  never mind what the likes of me went through during hours of torture with acid churning in the stomach.

i hope he learned his lesson months later.  it wasn't because of me.  it was countless of others who may have found their voice and put him to task.  the airline had him suspended after written complaints.

my own lesson?  egos know no bounds.  if mr sharwa is of the klm, this guy is of that american airline.  sadly, he victimizes fellow filipinos.  i don't have to say that he looks like a horse.  it is unfair for the horse.
#20590
i geared myself to spend the night at the airport.  i, a filipino, trapped in the airport of my own country.  i sat it out and faced the airline guy directly all throughout.  what else was there to do but study him?  he was like a peacock displaying his feathers of power and glory.  you know the kind, one who takes the stance of someone perched on a pedestal looking down on mere mortals.

boarding time.  all the passengers were in.  the area was suddenly cavernous and empty.  what will we do with her?  i heard a lady airline employee ask.  you can board now, the guy suddenly addressed me, with apologies.  expectedly, i was the last one to board, and i did so slowly, still unbelieving.
#20591
blazes, i've been to europe, the u.s., the middle east, and now that i was flying to a country that one hardly hear about, i was having a terrible time.

i'm too old for this, i thought.  it was nearing midnight.  our place in manila was already rented out.  too scared to go out of the airport to check in at a hotel at such a time, i burned the wires with calls.  but no explanation from the banana republic would convince the airline guy.  he wanted papers.  it was impossible at that time.  he might as well have asked for the moon.
#20592
on the homefront, i did go through a similar experience before...

this time it was a filipino doing it to a fellow filipino.  there's this american airline that flies to a certain country.  the filipino employee questioned my ticket.  how come you don't have a return flight?  answer: i'm going to live there for the next 3 years.  then where's your contract and affidavit of support?  i was stumped.  what he asked for were unnecessary in my situation.  so my passport wasn't enough...

2.  judging from his name, he's a malaysian.  oh, need i say that malaysians are one of the most arrogant southeast asians?  i state that with due respect to the exceptions.  in my meager experience, they seem to put on airs of british-ness, hold on to your seats, especially when it comes to filipinos.  i doubt if they can be as snotty with caucasians or with the japanese for that matter.  i say that without regret.  i've been through kuala lumpur airport more than once.  it didn't break my heart, but it did give me an idea of what malaysians are.

3.  klm will do well with damage control over this hapless incident.  suspend mr. shawa or take him to the airlines's salt mines where he may only face cargo and luggage and not people.

The airline employee allegedly barraged Belco with questions casting doubts on the legitimacy of her trip. She was asked, “Why is your passport so new?” “Your ticket is too cheap and purchased yesterday.” “Why (are you) flying through Malaysia if there are flights from the Philippines?” and “How much money (do) you have?”

what the...#^&@ >:( ?  these are questions of an arrogant half-human, half-beast.  this employee unnecessarily bloated his imagined power.  okay, first things first...

1. airlines are fined steeply by countries for carrying passengers with questionable legitimacy to such countries.  i don't know if this is the case with brazil.  be that as it may, it is thus understandable that airline employees do their share of weeding out questionable passengers.  so far, this particular employee did his job.  but he did it WRONG.  he overreached and insulted the passenger.  such silly questions can only come from someone who has gone bonkers.

Arjean Marie Belco

Arjean Marie Belco was received at the Embassy of Brazil in the Philippines by Ms. Fabiana Arazini Garcia Kanadoglu, Deputy Chief of Mission.

In its letter posted on Facebook, Goodxorg said Belco showed the KLM staff the address and contact info of her host family in Brazil, and that she requested the airline staff to contact her sponsors in the Philippines to verify the information she gave. But the KLM staff denied the request.

The student also showed her folder of documents, which included her proof of enrollment in Pamulaan College and the University of South Eastern Philippines, and certification that she is a Cartwheel Foundation scholar being sponsored by Goodxorg and Cartwheel for the trip.

The Facebook post also said that Goodxorg contacted KLM reservations for pertinent information on the trip to Brazil before purchasing the ticket.

The airline employee, Mr. Shawa, told the staff of Goodxorg over the phone that there was nothing he could do and that another ticket had to be bought. The group was required to get in touch with the Dutch Embassy in Malaysia, the Facebook post said.

“He was even laughing while listening to our side. We believe this is unacceptable,” the group said.

The nonprofit group Goodxorg (Good X or Good Exchanges) is led by Luis Petzhold, a Brazilian filmmaker and youth advocate, and Risa Halaguena, a Filipina lawyer and writer. Sending Belco to Brazil to attend World Youth Day, an international Catholic event to be held from July 23 to 28, is a pilot project of the group.

According to its Facebook page, Good X is “all about experiential learning. We believe that travel, culture and creativity should be appreciated and nurtured at a young age.”

The Brazil trip is Belco’s first outside the country, according to her sponsors, which explains her new passport. They also explained that the flight from Kuala Lumpur to Rio de Janeiro was approximately $1,000 cheaper than KLM’s Manila to Rio flight.

Belco showed airline personnel a bank statement from Cartwheel Foundation showing sufficient funds. She had $100 and P3,370 on her for emergencies and meals before her connecting flights to Brazil. She was also carrying clippings of media stories published in the Philippines about her trip.

But Goodxorg lamented that the papers and calls from the group were not enough for KLM.

“Arjean was denied her right to travel. This could also be perceived as a possible case of discrimination based on appearance, gender, ethnicity, nationality, age or social status,” Goodxorg said in its post.

Belco’s Brazil trip was shouldered by Goodxorg and its partner Cartwheel Foundation.org., which pooled donations from all over the world to send the BS Education student to the Catholic event.

The incident involving Arjean Marie Belco of Bukidnon’s Talaandig tribe was posted on the social networking site Facebook in a letter of complaint from Goodxorg, the sponsor of her Brazil trip.

According to the Facebook post, Belco went through immigration in Malaysia without incident but was not allowed to board her connecting flight to Rio de Janeiro by a KLM employee identified as Mr. Shawa who said that Belco appeared “not ready to travel” and “that he was doubtful” about her trip, “even if she had a folder full of documentation.”
