After laying its eggs, the turtle crawled back to the sea under the watchful eyes of DENR officials and Navy personnel. Norma Baylon, DENR’S wildlife section chief here said female leatherbacks lay from 50 to 110 eggs which take 45 to 70 days to hatch.

Marine biology experts said female leatherbacks are known to return often to the same nesting areas where they were originally hatched to produce their own offspring. This could mean that Albay is one of their few original homes in the world.

The giant turtle was initially discovered by residents who reported it to authorities. Leatherback are primarily found in the open oceans as far as Alaska in North America and the southern tip of Africa.
#20303
Task Force Pawikan is composed of personnel from the Albay provincial government, Department of Environment and Natural Resources and Navy soldiers from the Naval Forces Southern Luzon (Navforsol).

Supervised by DENR marine biologists, the group has transferred the eggs from where they were laid to the Navforsol compound for proper care and protection. A perimeter fence for the “no entry” zone has also been installed.

“Albay is a safe home for her, being a globally known staunch vanguard of environment and biodiversity protection advocate,” Salceda added. The province is United Nations global model for climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction.
#20304
The leatherback found here measured one meter wide and two meters long and weighed about 250-300 kilos and has a slippery and rubbery shell about 1.5 inches thick. Because of usual turtle behaviour, experts presume that the leatherback also hatched here decades ago.

The turtle sighting was the first documented nesting of a leatherback turtle in the country and marine biology experts say the turtle could have travelled halfway around the globe to lay eggs in the same place where it originally hatched.

“We are truly blessed in having been chosen by nature for our shores to provide safe haven for the world’s largest marine turtle, which is also a great chance to educate people on the proper treatment of sea animals and help maintain a balanced ecosystem. This is a hands-on experience for environment and nature lovers, the people and the young generations,” Salceda said.

LEGAZPI CITY â€" Albay Gov. Joey Salceda formed a special “Task Force Pawikan” to secure the nesting ground of the leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) that laid 100 eggs last week in the sand dunes of Albay Gulf, near the y*&^% River in this city.

Pawikan is the generic Filipino term for any of the seven sea turtle species, most of which are endangered. The leatherback turtle, the only species in its family, is categorized “critically engendered,” or one step from extinction.

LOS ANGELES (AP) â€" Smile Earth! You're on camera.

NASA is inviting the public to look skyward and wave at Saturn and Mercury in what is billed as an interplanetary photo op.

The Cassini spacecraft in orbit around Saturn and the Messenger craft circling Mercury moved into position Friday to take pictures of Earth, which will appear as a dot.

At the time of Friday's Cassini photo shoot, North America will be in sunlight. Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia will be illuminated in portraits by Messenger on Friday and Saturday.

Scientists say the snapshots of Earth are part of a bigger effort to study Saturn's shimmering rings and search for moons around Mercury.

It'll take days to weeks to process the images.

28th October. The nephew has all but confessed, they have badgered him so. Ah! ah! justice!

15th November. There are overwhelming proofs against the nephew, who was his uncle's heir. I shall preside at the sessions.

25th January. To death! to death! to death! I have had him condemned to death! Ah! ah! The advocate-general spoke like an angel! Ah! ah! Yet another! I shall go to see him executed!

10th March. It is done. They guillotined him this morning. He died very well! very well! That gave me pleasure! How fine it is to see a man's head cut off!

Now, I shall wait, I can wait. It would take such a little thing to let myself be caught.

25th October. The affair of the fisherman makes a great stir. His nephew, who fished with him, is charged with the murder.

26th October. The examining magistrate affirms that the nephew is guilty. Everybody in town believes it. Ah! ah!

27th October. The nephew makes a very poor witness. He had gone to the village to buy bread and cheese, he declared. He swore that his uncle had been killed in his absence! Who would believe him?

6th October. Nothing has been discovered. Some strolling vagabond must have done the deed. Ah! ah! If I had seen the blood flow, it seems to me I should be tranquil now! The desire to kill is in my blood; it is like the passion of youth at twenty.
20th October. Yet another. I was walking by the river, after breakfast. And I saw, under a willow, a fisherman asleep. It was noon. A spade was standing in a potato-field near by, as if expressly, for me.

I took it. I returned; I raised it like a club, and with one blow of the edge I cleft the fisherman's head. Oh! he bled, this one! Rose-colored blood. It flowed into the water, quite gently. And I went away with a grave step. If I had been seen! Ah! ah! I should have made an excellent assassin.

25th August. I must kill a man! I mustâ€"

30th August. It is done. But what a little thing! I had gone for a walk in the forest of Vernes. I was thinking of nothing, literally nothing. A child was in the road, a little child eating a slice of bread and butter.

He stops to see me pass and says, "Good-day, Mr. President."

And the thought enters my head, "Shall I kill him?"

I answer: "You are alone, my boy?"

"Yes, sir."

"All alone in the wood?"

"Yes, sir."

The wish to kill him intoxicated me like wine. I approached him quite softly, persuaded that he was going to run away. And, suddenly, I seized him by the throat. He looked at me with terror in his eyesâ€"such eyes! He held my wrists in his little hands and his body writhed like a feather over the fire. Then he moved no more. I threw the body in the ditch, and some weeds on top of it. I returned home, and dined well. What a little thing it was! In the evening I was very gay, light, rejuvenated; I passed the evening at the Prefect's. They found me witty. But I have not seen blood! I am tranquil.

22d August. I could resist no longer. I killed a little creature as an experiment, for a beginning. Jean, my servant, had a goldfinch in a cage hung in the office window. I sent him on an errand, and I took the little bird in my hand, in my hand where I felt its heart beat. It was warm. I went up to my room. From time to time I squeezed it tighter; its heart beat faster; this was atrocious and delicious. I was near choking it. But I could not see the blood.

Then I took scissors, short-nail scissors, and I cut its throat with three slits, quite gently. It opened its bill, it struggled to escape me, but I held it, oh! I held itâ€"I could have held a mad dogâ€"and I saw the blood trickle.

And then I did as assassins doâ€"real ones. I washed the scissors, I washed my hands. I sprinkled water and took the body, the corpse, to the garden to hide it. I buried it under a strawberry-plant. It will never be found. Every day I shall eat a strawberry from that plant. How one can enjoy life when one knows how!

My servant cried; he thought his bird flown. How could he suspect me? Ah! ah!

10th August. Who would ever know? Who would ever suspect me, me, me, especially if I should choose a being I had no interest in doing away with?

15th August. The temptation has come to me. It pervades my whole being; my hands tremble with the desire to kill.

3d July. It must be a pleasure, unique and full of zest, to kill; to have there before one the living, thinking being; to make therein a little hole, nothing but a little hole, to see that red thing flow which is the blood, which makes life; and to have before one only a heap of limp flesh, cold, inert, void of thought!

5th August. I, who have passed my life in judging, condemning, killing by the spoken word, killing by the guillotine those who had killed by the knife, I, I, if I should do as all the assassins have done whom I have smitten, Iâ€"Iâ€"who would know it?

30th June. To kill is the law, because nature loves eternal youth. She seems to cry in all her unconscious acts: "Quick! quick! quick!" The more she destroys, the more she renews herself.

26th June. Why then is it a crime to kill? Yes, why? On the contrary, it is the law of nature. The mission of every being is to kill; he kills to live, and he kills to kill. The beast kills without ceasing, all day, every instant of his existence. Man kills without ceasing, to nourish himself; but since he needs, besides, to kill for pleasure, he has invented hunting! The child kills the insects he finds, the little birds, all the little animals that come in his way. But this does not suffice for the irresistible need to massacre that is in us. It is not enough to kill beasts; we must kill man too. Long ago this need was satisfied by human sacrifices. Now the requirements of social life have made murder a crime. We condemn and punish the assassin! But as we cannot live without yielding to this natural and imperious instinct of death, we relieve ourselves, from time to time, by wars. Then a whole nation slaughters another nation. It is a feast of blood, a feast that maddens armies and that intoxicates civilians, women and children, who read, by lamplight at night, the feverish story of massacre.

One might suppose that those destined to accomplish these butcheries of men would be despised! No, they are loaded with honors. They are clad in gold and in resplendent garments; they wear plumes on their heads and ornaments on their breasts, and they are given crosses, rewards, titles of every kind. They are proud, respected, loved by women, cheered by the crowd, solely because their mission is to shed human blood; They drag through the streets their instruments of death, that the passer-by, clad in black, looks on with envy. For to kill is the great law set by nature in the heart of existence! There is nothing more beautiful and honorable than killing!

But here is the strange paper found by the dismayed notary in the desk where he had kept the records of great criminals! It was entitled: WHY?

20th June, 1851. I have just left court. I have condemned Blondel to death! Now, why did this man kill his five children? Frequently one meets with people to whom the destruction of life is a pleasure. Yes, yes, it should be a pleasure, the greatest of all, perhaps, for is not killing the next thing to creating? To make and to destroy! These two words contain the history of the universe, all the history of worlds, all that is, all! Why is it not intoxicating to kill?

25th June. To think that a being is there who lives, who walks, who runs. A being? What is a being? That animated thing, that bears in it the principle of motion and a will ruling that motion. It is attached to nothing, this thing. Its feet do not belong to the ground. It is a grain of life that moves on the earth, and this grain of life, coming I know not whence, one can destroy at one's will. Then nothingâ€"nothing more. It perishes, it is finished.

THE DIARY OF A MADMAN
by Guy de Maupassant

He was deadâ€"the head of a high tribunal, the upright magistrate whose irreproachable life was a proverb in all the courts of France. Advocates, young counsellors, judges had greeted him at sight of his large, thin, pale face lighted up by two sparkling deep-set eyes, bowing low in token of respect.

He had passed his life in pursuing crime and in protecting the weak. Swindlers and murderers had no more redoubtable enemy, for he seemed to read the most secret thoughts of their minds.

He was dead, now, at the age of eighty-two, honored by the homage and followed by the regrets of a whole people. Soldiers in red trousers had escorted him to the tomb and men in white cravats had spoken words and shed tears that seemed to be sincere beside his grave.

Confirming the Signs

1 Have the prospective dementia sufferer examined by a doctor. In some cases, a primary care physician can diagnose dementia, but more often, the patient needs to be referred to a specialist, such as a neurologist or gerontologist, who can diagnose dementia through the following means:

A review of the patient's medical history, including how and when symptoms developed. Based on this review, a doctor may order such laboratory tests as a blood count or tests for blood glucose level, spinal fluid or thyroid hormone levels.

A physical examination to identify disorders that can overlap with or contribute to dementia, such as heart disease, stroke, nutritional deficiency or kidney failure.

A review of medications the patient may be taking, as certain combinations of drugs may mimic or add to the symptoms of dementia.

A neurological evaluation, covering balance, reflexes, sensory and other functions to rule out other disorders or identify treatable symptoms.

Tests of memory, math and language skills, including the ability to write, draw, name objects and follow directions.

A brain scan to identify underlying causes of dementia such as strokes or tumors.
A psychiatric evaluation to rule out depression as an underlying cause of a patient's symptoms.
#20346
8 Check for signs of passivity. Sufferers of senile dementia may no longer want to go to places they used to go, take part in activities they used to enjoy or see the people they used to see.
#20347
7 Note changes in mood or personality. While people may get moody from time to time, dementia sufferers may have sharp, rapid mood swings, going from giddily happy to blazing mad in minutes, or they may become generally irritable or paranoid.
#20348
6 Look for problems with abstract thinking and reasoning. While a normal person may make occasional mistakes in keeping a checkbook, someone suffering from senile dementia may forget the concept of numbers. They may also fail to recognize that a whistling teakettle means that water is boiling on the stove and let the water evaporate away.
#20349
5 Notice if things are misplaced in locations that don't make sense. Sufferers of dementia may put their purse in the freezer or a thermos lid down the basement.
#20350
4 Look for time, place and spatial disorientation. Dementia sufferers may wander off, forget how they got to a place and how to return to where they belong. They may also be confused about directions, thinking north is south and east is west.
#20351
3 Note problems in using language. While people can often fumble for the right word, senile dementia sufferers may find themselves flustered in being unable to find the right word and blow up at the person they're talking to because of it. Eventually, they may be unable to communicate verbally at all, communicating only by facial expression or gesture.
#20352
2 Look for difficulty in performing tasks they used to do easily. Senile dementia sufferers may forget to serve the meal they just cooked or forget they cooked it in the first place.
#20353
Observing the Signs

1 Check for recent memory loss. While everyone forgets things, dementia sufferers never remember them later. They may ask the same question over and over, forgetting the answer they were given and even forgetting having asked the question.

“However, the number of tourist workers who were able to secure work visas from some Singapore agencies are double the number of  POEA processed workers,” Geslani said.

He added that there are around 150,000 domestic helpers in Singapore and the demand for such workers remains high.

“Singapore has a well developed economy with about 1.5 million expatriates working in all fields of their economy,” he said.

“After Taiwan imposed a ‘hiring freeze,’ which has affected 10,000 overseas Filipino workers  in Taiwan, Filipinos interested to work in Singapore as HSWs may have to wait a little longer for their chance as local agencies have declared a self-imposed moratorium,” Geslani said.

POEA Administrator Hans Cacdac, who was present during the ALRAS assembly, said the agency will not hesitate to impose sanctions on agencies violating the “no placement fee” policy.

Bureau of Immigration airport chief Bienvenido Castillo also promised to monitor and off-load suspected tourist workers bound for Singapore in order to prevent illegal recruitment syndicates from sending undocumented workers there.

Recruitment industry consultant Emmanuel Geslani said Singapore was the fifth ranking destination of domestic workers and the Philippines deployed around 14,500 domestic workers to the city-state in 2012.

She said the group’s general assembly on Friday, attended by 120 out of 130 members, arrived at the decision to implement the moratorium to convince Singapore agencies that the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration does not allow the collection of placement fees.

“The members will present their stand to Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz next week, which expresses their seriousness with this stop in deployment by submitting signed affidavits from the members,” Sermonia said.
#20359
Lucy Sermonia, president of Association of Licensed Recruitment Agencies to Singapore (ALRAS), said the group decided to impose a moratorium effective September 2 so that member agencies can convince erring members to follow the government policy of “non-collection” of placement fees.

Member agencies “will also  inform their Singapore counterparts that ALRAS members do not countenance the collection of placement fees or impose salary deductions on deployed HSWs (household serv ice workers) to Singapore,” Sermonia said in a statement.

Rains expected over Visayas, Mindanao

MANILA -- Light to moderate rains are expected over parts of Visayas and Mindanao Saturday due to a low pressure area (LPA), state weather bureau PAGASA said.

The weather disturbance was spotted 330 kilometers east of Mindanao as of 4 a.m. It was embedded along the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), affecting the southern region.

PAGASA said Visayas and the regions of Bicol, Mimaropa, Zamboanga peninsula, northern Mindanao, Caraga and Davao will experience light to moderate rains and thunderstorms under cloudy skies.

Meanwhile, much of Luzon including Metro Manila and the rest of the country will be in for isolated rains and thunderstorms under partly cloudy to cloudy skies. -- ANC

How big are goonches? The largest one caught weighed in at 161 pounds and was nearly 6 feet long, which is a world record weight and far bigger than any landed before. If one of these critters likes the way you look, it’s goodbye to you!

Is the goonch after revenge?

While that may not be likely, reports of swimmers being dragged underneath the surface by unseen forces are documented and well-known.
#20378
Scientists fear that the fish, originally a bottom feeder scavenger, began eating humans after developing a taste for flesh from feeding on burnt corpses dumped into the river after funerals.

Investigated by English biologist, Jeremy Wade and slated for a television documentary, the goonch is considered an endangered species.

In the past, locals speared them unmercifully in shallow waters and today electricity and dynamite are often utilized. Most anglers destroy the specimens they catch without even eating them.

The Great Kali is a river that flows along the India-Nepal border. Ordinarily a rather serene location, a mutant, vicious catfish has been terrorizing natives who fear swimming and meeting up with the goonch who eats people (not to be confused with the grinch who ate Christmas).

This creature, a giant catfish, looks like a reject from a horror movie, and is all the more disturbing because it is dangerous and very, very real!

You are writing for your contemporaries â€" not for Posterity. If you are lucky, your contemporaries will become Posterity.

Keep in mind Oscar Wilde: “A little sincerity is a dangerous thing, and a great deal of it is absolutely fatal.”

When in doubt how to end a chapter, bring in a man with a gun. (This is Raymond Chandler’s advice, not mine. I would not try this.)

Unless you are experimenting with form â€" gnarled, snarled & obscure â€" be alert for possibilities of paragraphing.

Be your own editor/critic. Sympathetic but merciless!

Don’t try to anticipate an ideal reader â€" or any reader.
He/she might exist â€" but is reading someone else.

Read, observe, listen intensely! â€" as if your life depended upon it.

Write your heart out.

Because of the various vicissitudes suffered by the image it has been repaired and restored on various occasions, however the carving largely conserves the original work.

On June 14, 1993 it was crowned by the Pope John Paul II, who named it "Mother of Spain and America (Spanish: Madre de España y América)". The Godparents of honor for the coronation where the kings of Spain, who delegated to their daughter, Infanta Cristina. In the acts of this celebration she was also named, in part through the town hall, "Pertutual Honorary Mayor of Palos de la Frontera (Spanish: Alcaldesa Honoraria Perpetua de Palos de la Frontera)".

Although it was dated towards the late 13th century or the early 14th century, included in the popular tradition and the legends is an ancient codex of 1714 from Fray Felipe de Santiago; it has been given an apostolic origin and some notable incarnations, like her apparition in the sea after the completion of the Umayyad conquest of Hispania among the nets of some fishermen from Huelva.

The image is a patron of both the monastery and the city of Palos de la Frontera, in which several diverse religious and civil acts are celebrated in the month of August in its honor culminating with the typical Andalusian romeria celebrated in the environment of La Rábida in the last weekend of that month.

The Virgin of Miracles or Saint Mary of La Rábida (Spanish: Virgen de los Milagros or Santa María de la Rábida) is a religious Roman Catholic image venerated at the La Rabida Monastery in the city of Palos de la Frontera (Huelva, Spain).

The image is in Gothic style, from approximately the 13th century, carved in alabaster. It was an exceptional witness to the historic events of the Discovery of the Americas. Before it, prayed men like Columbus, The Pinzon Brothers, and the men who participated in the first expeditions of Columbus and in subsequent ones that departed to America from this zone.

Likewise, in their visits to the Franciscan monastery, many prostrated themselves, among others, Hernán Cortés, Gonzalo de Sandoval (who died in the monastery and was buried in it) and Francisco Pizarro.

Deborah Kochevar, dean of the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, said she was very surprised by the announcement. Kochevar chaired a panel of outside specialists who reviewed operations at the primate center and issued a report last summer with suggestions for improving operations at the center, and she said Harvard seemed committed to fixing the problems and the future of the center.

“One of the points that the panel that I served on made strongly is that we believed that as one of the oldest primate research centers in the US, as an affiliate of Harvard, that the NEPRC was really looked up to as a model,” Kochevar said. “I think I’m safe in saying the unanimous consensus of our panel was that this was a very important resource for science, as well as for Harvard.”

“It’s my understanding that Harvard agrees this is a vitally important area of research. They’ve made an institutional decisionâ€"not because of a lack of support for research using monkeys or animal research in general,” Anderson said.

Medical school administrators made a recommendation that the center should be closed to senior Harvard University leadership, and the decision was made with the consultation of President Drew Faust.

“Difficult choices must be made at a time when all of the revenue sources upon which a research university depends are under pressure and the future of federal support for scientific inquiry seems uncertain,” Harvard University provost Alan Garber said in statement.

“This is Harvard’s decision,” Anderson said in an interview. “We did not expect it, weren’t aware that it was going to happen. We have no indication the other centers are interested in decreasing their capacity or diminishing the work they do.”

Anderson said it is too soon to know whether the NIH will try to use the funds now going to Harvard to help set up a new primate center or redistribute the funds to the other seven primate centers, which are scattered geographically around the country. In total, NIH spends $87 million a year supporting the primate centers’ operation through base grants.

Still, it is uncertain how many jobs will be found for staff and where animals will end up, given that many primate research centers and universities are dealing with the same economic pressures that led Harvard to make its decision.

“The investigators and the animal care staff at New England are outstanding, and yet I don’t know for sure they will all be supported by the system,” said Haigwood, adding that primate centers do not have resources to support many additional animals.

James Anderson, a deputy director at the National Institutes of Health, which provides the major funding for the primate center, said Harvard notified the agency of its plans about a week ago.

This year, the primate center received $27 million in federal funding, but universities are bracing for less federal research funding because of recently acted spending cuts. Harvard Medical School estimates that over the next five years, the primate center would demand an investment of $25 million from the medical school.

Dr. William Chin, executive dean for research, said the decision also focused on “how the center fits into the school’s basic priorities and overall goals.”

Chin said the medical school remains committed to biomedical research with non-human primates. A medical school animal facility with 42 primates in the Longwood Medical Area will continue to operate.

The administrators said in an interview that the school’s leadership decided not to reapply for a five-year federal grant that provides the base funding for the 51-year-old institution.

“The decision that we made was a strategic, long-term decision and not based in any way on the problems we had over the last several years,” said Dr. Jeffrey Flier, dean of the medical school. Going forward, “the school would have had to make considerable investments. Those are investments that would not have been able to go in other directions. And when we looked at everything, including the more difficult external funding environment that we all face,” this was the right decision.
