Economically, the era saw the large-scale diffusion and use of automobiles, telephones, motion pictures, and electricity, unprecedented industrial growth, accelerated consumer demand and aspirations, and significant changes in lifestyle and culture. The media focused on celebrities, especially sports heroes and movie stars, as cities rooted for their home team and filled the new palatial cinemas and gigantic stadiums. In most major countries women were given the right to vote for the first time. Finally the Wall Street Crash of 1929 ended the era, as the Great Depression set in worldwide, bringing years of worldwide gloom and hardship. (wikipedia)

The Roaring Twenties

The Roaring Twenties is a term sometimes used to refer to the 1920s, characterizing the decade's distinctive cultural edge in New York City, Chicago, Paris, Berlin, London, and many other major cities during a period of sustained economic prosperity. French speakers called it the "années folles" ("Crazy Years"), emphasizing the era's social, artistic, and cultural dynamism. "Normalcy" returned to politics in the wake of hyper-emotional patriotism during World War I, jazz music blossomed, the flapper redefined modern womanhood, and Art Deco peaked. (wikipedia)

what were parties like in the 1920s?

Roaring! and quite decadent.

Following World War I people socialised more and generally let their hair down. New fashions come into being along with new dances. People were generally relaxed about most things. However booze was restricted by the introduction of the Volstead Act (Prohibition) from 1920 to 1933, which put dampers on legal drinking parties. But bootleg booze was freely made available via the underworld so that people could carry on enjoying themselves. (http://wiki.answers.com/)

1920s social refinements still hold true after all.

The chief of the park’s animal department, Liu Suya, told the paper that while it does have a lion, it had been taken to a breeding facility and the dog â€" which belonged to an employee â€" had been temporarily housed in the zoo over safety concerns.

Users of China’s Twitter-like Sina Weibo service mocked the zoo.

“This is not funny at all. It’s sad for both the zoo and the animals,” said one.

“They should at least use a husky to pretend to be a wolf,” said another.

The beast was in fact a Tibetan mastiff â€" a large and long-haired breed of dog.

“The zoo is absolutely cheating us,” the paper quoted Liu, who was charged 15 yuan ($2.45) for the ticket, as saying. “They are trying to disguise the dogs as lions.”

Three other species housed incorrectly included two coypu rodents in a snake’s cage, a white fox in a leopard’s den, and another dog in a wolf pen.

Chinese zoo under fire for disguising hairy dog as lion

BEIJING â€" A Chinese zoo’s supposed “African lion” was exposed as a fraud when the dog used as a substitute started barking.

The zoo in the People’s Park of Luohe, in the central province of Henan, replaced exotic exhibits with common species, according to the state-run Beijing Youth Daily.

It quoted a customer surnamed Liu who wanted to show her son the different sounds animals made â€" but he pointed out that the animal in the cage labelled “African lion” was barking.

my unsolicited advice to westernized pinoys who want their dates to pick up half the tab, if not the whole tab: pretend to go to the rest room, go out the restaurant backdoor, and leave your date to pick up the whole tab.

12. Eat other anti-cancer nutrients.
Increasing several other daily nutrients (vitamin D, selenium, acidophilus, garlic, green tea) can also lower your risk of cancer.

11. Drink less alcohol.
Alcohol consumption slightly increases the risk of colorectal cancer, and the alcoholic beverage with the strongest link to colon cancer is beer. Beer is thought to contain nitrosamines, a carcinogen or pre-carcinogen that is activated in the intestines. Tannins are a carcinogenic compound that is found in red wine and some coffee and tea. While red wine is touted to have health-promoting properties, due to the natural phytonutrients that are found in the grape skin, you're better off simply eating the grapes.

10. Don't forget your flax.
Flaxseeds contain two cancer-preventive compounds: omega 3 fatty acids and lignans, which may reduce the risk of breast cancer and colon cancer. Ground flaxseeds, because they contain both the fiber and the oil, have more potent anticancer properties than flax oil alone. Cancer researchers suggest 25 grams of ground flaxseeds a day. You can grind your own in a coffee grinder or purchase pre-ground flaxseed meal, which mixes well in smoothies or sprinkled like bran flakes over yogurt and cereal.

9. Eat foods containing calcium.
Studies have shown that populations with a high intake of calcium (e.g., people in Sweden) have a lower incidence of colorectal cancer. Calcium controls the multiplication of epithelial cells lining the colon. When these cells proliferate at a fast rate, the risk of cancer increases. Calcium also binds cancer-producing bile acids and keeps them from irritating the colon wall.

7. Change your oils.
Oils that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids (i.e., fish and flax oils) have anti-cancer properties. Studies in experimental animals have shown that fish oil-supplemented animals develop significantly fewer colorectal tumors. Omega 3 fatty acids, such as those found in oily fish and flax seeds, help produce cancer-fighting phytochemicals. Flax oil also contains the anticancer phytonutrient lignans. Best protection against cancer is a diet that contains more omega 3 than omega 6 fatty acids, just the reverse of the typical American diet.

6. Eat more soy products.
Soy is a more healthful source of protein than meat. The primary anti-cancer value of soy seems to come from phytonutrients (for example, isoflavones) which inhibit the growth of new blood vessels necessary for tumor survival.

5. Switch from an animal-based diet to a plant-based diet.
The most compelling research linking diet to cancer are studies of groups of people who have primarily plant-based diets, for example vegetarians and Seventh Day Adventists, and who have a much lower risk of cancer.

3. Eat lots of raw fruits and vegetables.
The consensus of the hundreds of studies exploring the link between diet and cancer is that eating more fruits and vegetables reduces the risk of all types of cancers. Eating more fruits and vegetables decreases your appetite for fatty foods, which themselves increase the risk of cancer. Plants also contain phytochemicals, substances that may help your body fight cancer.

2. Increase Your Fiber Intake.
In all the research between food and cancer, the evidence for a relationship between a high fiber diet and lower chances of colorectal cancer is the most conclusive.

1. Keep your diet low in total fat and very low in saturated fats.
There are at least two ways in which dietary fat contributes to cancer. First, tumor cells need low density lipoproteins (LDL's) to grow. Therefore, a diet that helps to lower LDL levels could keep potentially cancerous cells from growing. Eating fat also stimulates the production of bile, which is needed to digest fat. If a lot of bile is allowed to stagnate in the large intestine for a long period of time, it's converted into apcholic acid, a proven carcinogen.

12 Dietary Changes that Will Lower Your Cancer Risk

Some foods actually contribute to the development of cancer; other foods lessen the risk. The following anti-cancer diet greatly lowers your risk of colorectal cancer and nearly all other types of cancers. It can also prevent cardiovascular disease. For people with a genetic tendency toward colorectal cancer, it is not just an option, it's a lifesaving necessity.

i found this, right here in tb, as posted by benelynne on

A friend, who is herself a cancer survivor, forwarded this message to me.

Five worst cancer-causing foods

Maybe we need to explain to the kids that we love them and they need to be healthy, we are not depriving them the food they love to eat.

There are some foods that people who are at high risk for developing cancer should definitely avoid. Generally, says natural health researcher Mike Adams, they should avoid foods that contain ingredients known to cause cancer, such as refined sugars and grains , hydrogenated oils, and nitrates. But which foods are the absolute worst?

The top five cancer-causing foods are:

1. Hot dogs
Because they are high in nitrates, the Cancer Prevention Coalition advises that children eat no more than 12 hot dogs a month. If you can't live without hot dogs, buy those made without sodium nitrate.

2. Processed meats and bacon
Also high in the same sodium nitrates found in hot dogs, bacon, and other processed meats raise the risk of heart disease. The saturated fat in bacon also contributes to cancer.

3. Doughnuts
Doughnuts are cancer-causing double trouble. First, they are made with white flour, sugar, and hydrogenated oils, then fried at high temperatures. Doughnuts, says Adams , may be the worst food you can possibly eat to raise your risk of cancer.

4. French fries
Like doughnuts, French fries are made with hydrogenated oils and then fried at high temperatures. They also contain cancer- causing acrylamides which occur during the frying process. They should be called cancer fries, not French fries, said Adams.

5. Chips, crackers, and cookies
All are usually made with white flour and sugar. Even the ones whose labels claim to be free of trans-fats generally contain small amounts of trans-fats.

Gorme died after a brief illness.

Lawrence was at her bedside, along with their son, when she died on Saturday afternoon, her publicist Howard Bragman said.

Gorme, who was born to Spanish-speaking Jewish parents in New York in 1928, grew up speaking both English and Spanish.

She met Lawrence in 1953 on the set of a New York local TV programme hosted by Steve Allen which became the Tonight Show the next year. The couple married in 1957.

Gorme's biggest solo hit was Blame It On The Bossa Nova. She also scored another success on her own in 1964 with the Spanish-language song, Amor, recorded with the Mexican band Trio Los Panchos.
