There may have been beauty tilts earlier that were not properly documented, so the personalities may have slipped from our memory …

Over the years, it may have been known by different titles such as Miss Tagbilaran, Tagbilaran’s Five Prettiest, Miss Teen Tagbilaran, Mutya sa Tagbilaran or Miss Young Tagbilaran, even spanning the terms of former City Mayors Venancio Pahang Inting, Rolando Gatal Butalid, Jose Ma. Fama Rocha, Jose Valles Torralba and now Mayor Dan Neri Lim and handled by the City Government of Tagbilaran, Leo Club of Tagbilaran, Chocolate Hills Lady Jaycees or Pastillas Jaycees, but just the same, these beauty pageants never fail to catch the fancy of the people who have an eye for pulchritude.

Through the years, as Tagbilaran has metamorphosed into a city with big dreams, we also recall the ladies who were privileged to be its ambassadors of goodwill, who have successfully represented Tagbilaran in higher levels of competitions, or have helped in promoting the best assets of the City by serving as role models of the youth.

After more than four (4) fruitful decades, the City has grown by leaps and bounds, so has beauty pageants. It’s not just about the face and figure, poise and bearing, talent and intelligence or that “thing’ they call x-factor. Beauty pageants have evolved, have gone beyond simply looking at the physical attributes of each candidate, but most importantly, it has given the definition of “beauty with a purpose.” So, what has become of our former titleholders?

In April 1986, Zosita Caliao Clarin (married to Godofredo Manigque; as a mother, Suzette has raised four lovely children, the eldest “Margo,” destined to become Miss Tagbilaran exactly 20 years after her own victory) was crowned Miss Tagbilaran in the pageant sponsored by the Leo Club of Tagbilaran. Three months after that, the City Government of Tagbilaran organized the 1986 Tagbilaran’s Five Prettiest and proclaimed Elisa Pusta Laway (now with the audit division of the Holy Name University Finance Office), Gemma Marina Reyes Manding (a Philippine Airlines flight attendant for almost two decades), Ma. Josefina Mabilog Manigque (a businesswoman in Bacolod), Helena Monton (a nurse in London) and Leah Vita Castaño.

In the year that followed, Cogon’s Fiel Angeli Espejo Araoarao, 17 at that time (now wife of Jerome John J. Gabin from Siquijor and mother of Cielo, Tagbilaran City Information Officer who served as president of the development information officers in Bohol and Central Visayas), reigned as Miss Tagbilaran 1987. The blend of American and Spanish features in Geraldee Vallejo Campbell (now Mrs. Balbona, has traveled far and wide as a Cathay Pacific flight attendant based in Hongkong) was evident when she was crowned Miss Teen Tagbilaran in 1988.

Figuring in Bohol’s beauty pageant history as the first Miss Bohol Sandugo titleholder is Mutya sa Tagbilaran 1989 Winnie Moreno Lim (married for 13 years to Vicente Ventulan), now director of the rehabilitative services of the Life Care Center in Port Saint Lucie, Florida, USA. In 1990, a Penshoppe model, Ma. Victoria Gaviola Labado, became Mutya sa Tagbilaran and is now a fulfilled obstetrician-gynecologist, wife of Dr. Philip S. Larrazabal, head of the radiology and cancer treatment of Cebu Doctors Hospital and heads the Center for Women of the same institution.

One of the pretty and smart ladies of the Matuod Clan from Manga, Mutya 1991 Joanna Cheryl Matuod Evardone (a cardiac intensive care unit nurse at Yale-New Haven Hospital in Connecticut, USA and recipient of the Star Award for Nurses for being one of the Most Outstanding Members of the Nursing Staff), succeeded Labado.  Still a student of Divine Word College when she won the crown (now a bank teller), Suzy Agoncillo Tabuno was Mutya sa Tagbilaran 1992 and was the city’s official representative to the Miss Bohol Sandugo ’92.

Adjudged Mutya 1993 was a no-nonsense lady, Sophia Lorraine Maniwang Alvarez, now Mrs. Gentallan, lives in Milford, Connecticut with husband Joel (from Antequera) and 10-month-old son Justin Christian and works as registered nurse in the intensive care unit and coronary care unit of Norwalk Hospital for a little over 5 years already. In 1994, Vanessa Joyce Matuod Evardone (Astillero), earned the second Mutya title for the Evardone Family after older sister Chewee (Joanna Cheryl), continued to triumph as Miss Bohol Sandugo 1994 pageant, and is now having her residency training in internal medicine at the Caritas Carney Hospital-Tafts University in Boston, Massachusetts. For some reasons, no pageant was held in 1995.

The charming Mary Fragelle Felisilda Tejano (a BA in Mass Communications graduate of the University of the Philippines â€" Cebu, she had a stint as administrative officer of Guardo Realty Development Ventures until she left the company in March 2006 and recently migrated to Brampton, Ontario, Canada) from Lindaville Subdivision held the crown in 1996. The articulate Socorro D’ Marie Tallo Inting, Mutya sa Tagbilaran 1997 and Miss Bohol Sandugo 1997, is now a lawyer, a partner in the Mijares and Partners Law Office in Cebu who enjoys handling civil cases more than criminal cases and likes the challenge of trying to win a losing case and dealing with the loss of a winnable case.

An incoming fourth year high school student of Holy Spirit School in 1998, the glamorous Jesyl Bongosia del Rosario, Mutya sa Tagbilaran 1998, finished BS Commerce at the Holy Name University used to be a front office staff of Plantation Bay Resort and is now a bank employee of Metrobank in Cebu.

Mutya 1999 Marimi Caballo Marapao, the unassuming lass from Lindaville, crossed boundaries she has never been before (Asia, Europe, North and South America) as an Asiana Airline flight attendant. Taloto’s Mutya Amor Telmo Zamora, Mutya 2000, was with the Cebu office of Gulf Airlines, an international airline flying Middle East and Europe but is now an accountant in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Succeeding Zamora in 2001 was Bool’s bet Jacklyn Joy Pilayre Yam, a BSC-Management Accounting graduate of HNU, best remembered for the “fall” which caused her a few stitches on the face before the pageant and coronation night.

A multi-faceted lady, Mutya 2002 Costie Jephilin Bojo Besas passed the nurses’ board examination given in June 2005 and the International English Language Testing System exam (November 2005), as well as the grueling N-CLEX in Hongkong administered on August 19, her 22nd birthday. She is waiting for her visa screen certificate for the United States. Rhoda Lee Logroño Ligan, Mutya 2003, was one of the successful examinees of the much-talked about licensure exam for nurses last June 11 and 12,2006 and now working on her application in a call center and forwarding company.

Mutya 2004 Lorraine Marie Mapute Evasco, left for New York on August 3, 2006 to join her Math teacher-mother Alma Reyfil (she intends to pursue her college after savoring her days at Silliman University as a consistent BA MassCom honor student of their department).

In 2005, a group of five lasses composed of Bool’s Richell “Rich Asuncion” Pacaldo Angalot (who is now having her share of stardom after becoming a GMA-7 Starstruck finalist), Poblacion 1’s Anna Karenina Fuentes Cimagala (another believer in the principles of Florence Nightingale, a third year nursing student at HNU), Mansasa’s April Lynn C. Recio (a second year BSN student of HNU), Katherine Margaret M. Tejano (recently migrated to Long Beach, California, USA), and Barbie Ann B. Vanta (was contemplating to enroll in a caregiving course, but went to Davao) were hailed as Miss Young Tagbilaran 2005 beauties.

In 2006, the statuesque Margo Adelaiz Clarin Manigque (daughter of Miss Tagbilaran 1986 Suzette Clarin), one of the freshest faces on the catwalk as a promising fashion model and bronze medallist of the Manila Youth Games 2005, a nursing student of the University of Bohol, epitomizes the traits befitting of a Miss Tagbilaran 2006 titleholder. On April 28, 2007, Mary Lovely P. Ligones of Barangay Bool was crowned Miss Tagbilaran 2007 succeeding Margo Manigque.

Wherever they may be, they have certainly left their marks in local beauty pageant history as women who exuded charm and grace and in later years have exhibited strength of character and shown compassion to the people whose lives they have touched. More significantly, the common denominator of these ladies is that they have triumphed over life’s challenges.

(The writer wishes to express gratitude to the parents, siblings and relatives of the candidates, Lawrence Medilo, Raymund Buslon, Joel Padolin and Chrysilli Mitzi Ibaya of Bohol Magazine for willingly sharing their photo collections… )

Authorities in Cambodia warned men on Tuesday against do-it-yourself penis enlargement treatments, in the aftermath of a case in which a man killed himself because of the side-effects of a botched enlargement attempt.

The man reportedly had been injecting hair tonic into his own penis â€" but the side effects were so agonising that he hanged himself to end the pain.

The hair tonic was advertised as giving thicker and more lustrous hair. It did not have the same effect upon the man's penis.

Instead, the injections caused massive, excruciating ulceration of the phallus.

The details of the case were released to the public in an effort to warn other Cambodian men against trying anything similar. Officials cautioned that they believe this was not an isolated case.

Coroner Vieng Vannarith commented: 'He wanted a bigger one very badly, and the results were tragic.'

By Fiel Angeli E. Araoarao â€" Gabin

She is an epitome of beauty, grace and intelligence rolled into one. Sources say she is the second Jagna-anon to become Miss CVIRAA after Erminia Yap in the 1960s.

It was not really easy for Idy Casenas Cagas, the shy 16-year-old beauty from Jagna, to get the Miss CVIRAA crown, what with the presence of the towering hopeful from Cebu City, Marie Sharon Grace E. Angel, a ramp model, and the striking mestiza from Dumaguete City, Christine Marie L. Gonzales, a Miss Teen Philippines winner, who were her strong contenders for the title.

In the evening of April 14, Good Friday, teacher-trainors Jessica Agad and Merlino "Notnot" Acebes, along with make-up artists Cesar Arban, John Rey Cadelina and Alvin Malban trooped to the Cagas residence, just to convince Idy to represent Bohol division in the regional personality tilt. She wasn't given the guidelines yet, but willingly made her way to Tagbilaran for the pictorials last April 17. Unprepared, Idy sought the help of friends for the swimsuit and other wardrobe needed for the video shoot at the Alona Tropical Resort in Panglao where she befriended Laarni S. Guerrero, the candidate from Bais City (winner of the Miss Friendship award) who, according to Idy, was impressed with the scenery the moment she set foot in Bohol. After that, she still had to comply with the other credentials needed before the 8:00 pm deadline.

Although she figured as one of the grand questors in the final competition of Island City Mall's Circle of Ten Teen Quest (where this writer, a judge of the contest, first saw her) last year after Charles Suico (her sister's friend) talked her into joining, she admits that she was a bit hesitant about the Miss CVIRAA - her first time to join a beauty pageant. But who would think that the very timid Idy would metamorphose into a poised and glamorous stunner on stage? She may have felt almost paralyzing nervousness at the start of the pageant, but eventually, the lithe beauty emerged to prove her worth which led to her victory.

The youngest daughter of Barangay Pagina Kagawad Rudy Cagas and Zosima Casenas, an elementary school teacher, Idy, born on October 21, 1989, always looks up to the traditional, rather patriarchal manner that they have been brought up with. She relates that every mealtime is an opportunity for the family to strengthen bonding by exchanging ideas, about their annual "pana-ad" to Senor Santo Niño de Cebu and the visit to their uncle every January. Education is highly valued in their family as her mother, grandfather and grandmother are respected educators. To her older sisters Iris (a BSE-Social Science student of the University of Bohol) and Ima (a BSE-Filipino major at the Cebu Normal University), Idy is the "baby" in the family who is "malambing," "paraygon," or "langi" and relies on the support of her parents and siblings.

Before, she imagined herself as a dentist, nurse, engineer or teacher. Now that she is a college entrant at the University of the Philippines - Iloilo this June, Idy intends to take up either accountancy, her first choice (she has a penchant for numbers), or broadcast communications (as suggested by Councilor Senen Lloren), but is somewhat scared at the thought of being away from the family, especially if she gets sick and her mother will not be there to take care of her. However, her desire for independence and the chance to do things herself has taught her to accept the reality that she must make the best out of everything.

At her tender age, Idy has her share of achievements: as gold medalist in the provincial "Tuklas ng Talino" for public speaking sponsored by the Girl Scout of the Philippines - Bohol Council in November 2003 and her citations as "Declaimer of the Year" and "Best in Tula," aside from being among the top ten of the graduating class. The treasurer of the Student Body Organization was also hailed as "prom queen" in the Junior-Senior prom last March. When not helping with the household chores or studying her lessons, she listens to music, reads books and keeps constant association with friends through texting, as most people these days do.

As she is set to inspire the Region 7 athletes who will compete in the forthcoming Palarong Pambansa in Naga City, Camarines Sur, she vows to show the true meaning of sportsmanship by being humble in victory and gracious in accepting defeat.

A New Jersey man paid $10,000 in cash yesterday to have his beloved mastiff released from a Brooklyn pound while he and dogged city lawyers continue their fight over whether the pooch should be neutered.

"I love him. I'll do anything for him. He's my constant companion . . . Even my mailman loves him," Peter Georgoutsos, 46, said of 5-year-old Spartacus.

In the dog-eat-dog battle, Georgoutsos is suing the city for $30,000.

The $10,000 he forked over will be held in escrow until the fall, when an appellate court will rule on the city's appeal of a Brooklyn judge's decision that a city law requiring stray animals to be neutered does not apply to Spartacus.

Under a deal worked out with the city's Law Department, a microchip was implanted in the pooch to make sure he doesn't hit the road.

The mastiff escaped from Georgoutsos' truck on May 28 when the vehicle was broken into in Queens while he was visiting friends.

Georgoutsos got in touch with cops, who told him that the 110-pound mastiff was at the Animal Care and Control Center in Brooklyn.

Georgoutsos went to the shelter to find that Spartacus had been shot with five tranquilizer darts.

He also was told that a city law requires that stray animals be spayed or neutered before being released from shelters.

Georgoutsos refused to agree because the pooch helps on his 14-acre farm in Franklin Township, 75 miles from New York. He said the snip would hurt the dog's stamina.

On June 15, Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Arthur Schack sided with Georgoutsos, declaring the City Council had not intended the law to apply to cases like this one.

"What he was brought in with, he leaves the center with," Schack said.

But Spartacus stayed where he was because the city appealed, arguing that the dog was picked up wandering city streets and thus fell under the law's provisions.

Tom Cruise may suit up nicely as an American flying ace or an acrobatic crime buster, but when it comes to portraying Germany's most beloved anti-Nazi, Germans would prefer a different actor, bitte.

Cruise is due to play German officer Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg, celebrated for trying to kill Hitler in 1944, but the German Defense Ministry has warned that if Cruise gets the role, Ministry sites will be off-limits to the filmmakers. The reason? Because Cruise, as the Defense Ministry puts it, "has publically professed to being a member of the Scientology cult."

"Stauffenberg played an imporant role in the military resistance against the Nazi regime," a Ministry of Defense spokesman explained Wednesday , adding that "a sincere and respectful depiction of the events of July 20 [the failed plot to assassinate Hitler] is therefore very much in our interest. Tom Cruise, with his Scientology background, is not the right person for this." Ursula Cabreta, director of a government-sponsored group that monitors Scientologist activities in Germany was more blunt. She called the selection of Cruise to play the role of von Stauffenberg a "scandal."

The furor says more about Germany's struggle with Scientology than it does about the actor, who does, it's worth noting, bear a passing resemblance to the square-jawed German national hero. Cruise was offered the role, says United Artists CEO Paula Wagner, "because [director Bryan Singer] thought he was perfect for the part. Aside from his obvious admiration of the man he is portraying, Mr. Cruise's personal beliefs have absolutely no bearing on the movie's plot, themes, or content."

The German authorities have had a long history of run-ins with the Church of Scientology, which they accuse of masquerading as a church in order to make money â€" a charge the group vehemently rejects. Germany, along with several other European countries, has aggressive laws targeting groups that they deem to be cults. Their hostility to Scientology is also based, Cabreta told TIME, on a perception that the writings of the church's founder , L. Ron Hubbard, split the world into "social " and "anti social" personalities, and also that the group "propagates the idea that Germany is controlled by Nazis."

The German government recently tried, unsuccessfully, to prevent the Church of Scientology from opening a new 43,000-square-foot headquarters in the upscale Berlin district of Charlottenburg. The facility opened in January, and Cruise and his wife, Katie Holmes, dropped by earlier this month during a visit that also took in the Von Stauffenberg memorial.

The memory of von Stauffenberg is close to German hearts. His plot to assassinate Hitler on July 20, 1944, while unsuccessful, has come to symbolize German resistance to the Nazis. Repelled by Hitler's racist policies and military bungling, Von Stauffenberg tried to blow him up with a suitcase bomb at the field headquarters known as Wolf's Lair, but the blast was partially obstructed and failed to find its target. Von Stauffenberg was executed in a purge shortly afterwards.

Casting Cruise in the role has drawn fire from a range of sources. "He should keep his hands off my father," Von Stauffenberg's son Berthold told the Suddeutsche Zeitung. "He should go climb a mountain or go surfing in the Caribbean. I don't care as long as he stays out of this." Von Stauffenberg said that he was not commenting on Cruise's acting prowess, though based on the star's oeuvre, he feared the result would be "terrible kitsch."

Thomas Kretschmann, a German actor (King Kong, The Downfall) who says the part was originally written for him â€" a claim dismissed by the producers â€" called Cruise's selection "an absolute catastrophe, a real blow." He told the Welt am Sonntag that even the idea of this "epitome of modern American action cinema" putting on a German uniform with an eye patch is "quite ridiculous."

The furor is unlikely to have any impact on the movie. Entitled Valkyrie and directed by Bryan Singer (Superman Returns), it is still scheduled for release in 2008. The Defense Ministry refusal to allow access to its buildings will bar cameras from the original cluster of rooms, including von Stauffenberg's office, where the plot was hatched, though presumably the setting can be replicated at studios outside Berlin.

The German government action seems unlikely to cost Cruise his role. The publicity, if anything, will probably boost ticket sales, even as Germans find comfort in having spoken out: "I am very glad that the filming permission for such a high-ranking Scientology member could have been prevented," a senior official in the ruling Christian Democratic Union party, Antje Blumenthal said. "This would have equalled an acceptance of Scientology." As the world now knows, Germany is having none of that.

Most teachers have been attacked or verbally abused in the past 12 months, a survey has found.

Some were threatened by pupils brandishing weapons, and others by parents, according to the research from the University of Leicester.

While most teachers said they were not concerned about being attacked, nearly one in five said they were worried.

Teachers were more fearful of having something stolen from them at school, with 48% expressing concern.

The survey was conducted by a group called Perpetuity, a spin-out from the University of Leicester, and sponsored by security specialists TAC UK.

Criminologist Professor Martin Gill, who led the research team, said: "There was an overall perception of safety and security among most staff.

"But some feel unsafe, and most teachers were victimised in some way, some seriously. As they stated in their responses, this can impact negatively on the whole learning experience."

Two-thirds - 66% - of the teachers reported that they had been verbally or physically assaulted by pupils in the past year.

The study found that 21% of teachers said they had been verbally or physically assaulted by a parent or guardian in the last year and 6% by an intruder at the school.

The survey questioned 300 teachers and conducted follow-up interviews with other education experts. The study followed Government figures showing a sharp rise last year in the number of times teenagers were suspended for disrupting lessons, verbal abuse and assaulting teachers and other pupils.

Job Opportunity / You want to Work at Google?
June 28, 2007, 09:38:48 PM
Better study its do's and don'ts first before you submit your application.

Do

1. Go to Stanford, Harvard, or MIT. though Google has relaxed its GPA standards of late - and now considers candidates with less than a 3.7 average - be prepared to discuss any B's you may have earned.

2. Stress how well you get along with others. Unlike some companies that tolerate lone wolves, Google (Charts) wants team players who'll gladly work cheek by jowl with their teammates.

3. Talk about your many diverse interests ("I fly-fish! And love chess! And breed water buffalo!") Narrow interests or skills are a big time turnoff at Google.

4. Be prepared to get up at a whiteboard and write software code during your interview. Brush up on "bit twiddling," by the way. Really.

Don't

1. Joke about the whole Don't Be Evil (business philosophy) thing. Googlers take their goodness very seriously.

2. Go on and on in your interview about the doctoral project that you didn't bother building or trying to commercialize. Google likes doers, not thinkers

3. Talk about money. they'll think you're just trying to get rich. Even though you probably are, it's something you're not supposed to discuss out loud

4. Mention the competition. in its eyes, everything at Google is sui generis. Other than programming languages, if it wasn't invented at Google, it's not worth discussing.

It seems there is so much hulabalo over the deletion of the joke. It was one of the more than 20 jokes that had been deleted from this site.

The tone of the story was the very reason why it was deleted. It was not about the language used. The admin feels the joke was not appropriate for the general public.

With his traditional Mongolian wedding ceremony just around the corner, 56-year-old Bao Xishun, the world’s tallest man, has been busy looking for a bed that is large enough for his 2.36-m frame.

Bao and his bride, Xia Shujuan, registered their marriage on March 26. The ceremony is scheduled to take place in Chifeng, a city in the the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, on July 21.

“Everything is ready for my wedding, except for a bed capable of fitting me at our new home,” Bao said last week after shopping around local furniture markets. The media have urged people to offer solutions to the dilemma.

Bao Xishun, 55, from Mongolia, China is 7 foot 9 inches tall. He has never been married or even dated because of his extreme height. In February this year, he met a 28 year-old girl named Xia, and they fell in love.

The soft spoken giant is from a family of herdsmen in Inner Mongolia. He has five normal-sized brothers and sisters. Earlier this year he was officially recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the tallest man on the planet.

His height was normal until he was 15, then the extraordinary growth spurt started. By the ago of 20, he was already 6 foot 11.

Bao now weighs 364 pounds, has legs that stretch for 4 foot 11 inches and his feet are each 1 foot 3 inches in length. Last year, he used his 3 foot 6 inch long arm to save a dolphin by extracting a plastic object from its stomach.

The Weaker Sex
By MAGGIE JONES
<a href="http://boysproject.net">The Boys Project</a>

Men start out ahead: 115 males are conceived for every 100 females. But it's downhill from there.

• The male fetus is at greater risk of miscarriage and stillbirth.

• Male births slightly outnumber female births (about 105 to 100), but boys have a higher death rate if born premature: 22 percent compared with 15 percent for girls.

• Overall, more newborn males die than females (5 to 4).

• Sudden infant death syndrome is one and a half times as common in boys as in girls.

• Boys are three to four times as likely to be autistic.

• Boys are three times as likely to have Tourette's syndrome.

• Mental retardation afflicts one and a half times as many boys as girls.

• Dyslexia is diagnosed two to three times as often in boys as girls.

• As teenagers, boys die at twice the rate of girls.

• Boys ages 15-19 are five times as likely to die in a homicide.

• Boys ages 15-19 are almost 11 times as likely to die by drowning.

• Boys ages 16-19 are nearly twice as likely to die from a car accident.

• Men are 16 times as likely as women to be colorblind.

• Men suffer hearing loss at twice the rate of women.

• Though women attempt suicide two to three times as often as men, four times as many men actually kill themselves.

• The male hormone testosterone is linked to elevations of LDL, the bad cholesterol, as well as declines in HDL, the good cholesterol.

• Men have fewer infection-fighting T-cells and are thought to have weaker immune systems than women.

• Men have a higher death rate from pneumonia and influenza than women.

• By the age of 36, women outnumber men.

• Men ages 55-64 are twice as likely as women to die in car accidents.

• Men ages 55-74 are twice as likely as women to die of heart disease.

• In the United States, men are twice as likely to die from parasite-related diseases (in part, some speculate, because their greater average size may offer parasites a bigger target).

• Among people 65 and older, men account for 84 percent of suicides.

• Stroke, cancer, diabetes, heart disease and accidents -- all among the top causes of death -- kill men at a higher rate than women.

• American men typically die almost six years before women do.

• By the age of 100, women outnumber men eight to one.

• The good news? Men who live to be 100 tend to be in better shape than their centenarian female counterparts.

<a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk">The Telegraph UK</a>

The Bank for International Settlements, the world's most prestigious financial body, has warned that years of loose monetary policy has fuelled a dangerous credit bubble, leaving the global economy more vulnerable to another 1930s-style slump than generally understood.

"Virtually nobody foresaw the Great Depression of the 1930s, or the crises which affected Japan and southeast Asia in the early and late 1990s. In fact, each downturn was preceded by a period of non-inflationary growth exuberant enough to lead many commentators to suggest that a 'new era' had arrived", said the bank.

The BIS, the ultimate bank of central bankers, pointed to a confluence a worrying signs, citing mass issuance of new-fangled credit instruments, soaring levels of household debt, extreme appetite for risk shown by investors, and entrenched imbalances in the world currency system.

"Behind each set of concerns lurks the common factor of highly accommodating financial conditions. Tail events affecting the global economy might at some point have much higher costs than is commonly supposed," it said.

The BIS said China may have repeated the disastrous errors made by Japan in the 1980s when Tokyo let rip with excess liquidity.

"The Chinese economy seems to be demonstrating very similar, disquieting symptoms," it said, citing ballooning credit, an asset boom, and "massive investments" in heavy industry.

Some 40pc of China's state-owned enterprises are loss-making, exposing the banking system to likely stress in a downturn.

It said China's growth was "unstable, unbalanced, uncoordinated and unsustainable", borrowing a line from Chinese premier Wen Jiabao

In a thinly-veiled rebuke to the US Federal Reserve, the BIS said central banks were starting to doubt the wisdom of letting asset bubbles build up on the assumption that they could safely be "cleaned up" afterwards - which was more or less the strategy pursued by former Fed chief Alan Greenspan after the dotcom bust.

It said this approach had failed in the US in 1930 and in Japan in 1991 because excess debt and investment built up in the boom years had suffocating effects.

While cutting interest rates in such a crisis may help, it has the effect of transferring wealth from creditors to debtors and "sowing the seeds for more serious problems further ahead."

The bank said it was far from clear whether the US would be able to shrug off the consequences of its latest imbalances, citing a current account deficit running at 6.5pc of GDP, a rise in US external liabilities by over $4 trillion from 2001 to 2005, and an unpredented drop in the savings rate. "The dollar clearly remains vulnerable to a sudden loss of private sector confidence," it said.

The BIS said last year's record issuance of $470bn in collateralized debt obligations (CDO), and a further $524bn in "synthetic" CDOs had effectively opened the lending taps even further. "Mortgage credit has become more available and on easier terms to borrowers almost everywhere. Only in recent months has the downside become more apparent," it said.

CDO's are bond-like packages of mortgages and other forms of debt. The BIS said banks transfer the exposure to buyers of the securities, giving them little incentive to assess risk or carry out due diligence.

Mergers and takeovers reached $4.1 trillion worldwide last year.

Leveraged buy-outs touched $753bn, with an average debt/cash flow ratio hitting a record 5:4.

"Sooner or later the credit cycle will turn and default rates will begin to rise," said the bank.

"The levels of leverage employed in private equity transactions have raised questions about their longer-term sustainability. The strategy depends on the availability of cheap funding," it said.

That may not last much longer.

US heiress Paris Hilton has described as "traumatic" the time she spent in a Los Angeles prison for violating probation on a driving ban.

Appearing on CNN's Larry King talk show she said: "It was a very traumatic experience but I feel like God does make everything happen for a reason."

She said she was going to party less and be a "more responsible role model".

The 26-year-old was released from jail on Tuesday after serving 23 days of a 45-day sentence.

In her first televised interview since her release, Paris Hilton said she wanted people to know what she had gone through and insisted she should not have been jailed in the first place.

She said she had panic attacks and nightmares that someone would break into her cell and do harm to her, and that her small cell had exacerbated her claustrophobia.

"I think the crime did not fit the punishment. I don't feel like I deserved to go to jail," she said, during the hour-long show.

Hilton said she hated prison but it had been "a blessing in disguise", and had given her an opportunity to re-evaluate her life.

"I just felt this is like a new beginning for me, just sitting in jail I just used it as a journey to figure out myself and who I am and what I want to do.

"There's just so much more to me than what people think."

Role model

She said she was encouraged by letters she had received from fans, including some from US soldiers serving in Iraq.

"I've definitely matured and grown a lot from this experience... I've gotten a lot of letters from mothers, and their daughters look up to me, and I want to be a good role model for these girls."

In the future, Paris Hilton said she wanted to set up a half-way house to help women when they are released from jail.

Hilton, sentenced to 45 days on 3 June, was released early from the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood, California, due to crowded jail conditions and time off for good behaviour.

She was briefly freed on medical grounds earlier this month but was sent back to jail by a court.

Veteran interviewer Larry King later described Hilton's performance as "puzzling and perplexing", and said she was in denial about her crime.

Amay crashed. We do not know whether he ran into the truck or the truck ran into him. We do not also know whether it was a truck or bus. It must be a four-wheel vehicle that way involved since it fractured the leg of the indestructible Amay. Now he is brought to Cebu for repairs.

Kagawad Alberto Y. Café is the Chair of the Committee on Culture and Arts. In the production of the commemorative book on the 375th year of the foundation of Jagna, he and George Tavera were most enthusiastic in proving the proposition that Jagna was already a thriving community before the arrival of the Spaniards. Traces of ancient burial grounds were explored. Out of the way places were surveyed. Amay went to places where a billy goat might think twice before exploring.

Burial places were almost inaccessible. In the absence of Amay, George Tavera did the exploring with father Berro. High tide left them stranded in Canupao Point that they have to text for help to extricate them from the place. There were rescued by a boat so there will be other places for them to explore. What the team found were weathered bones, a few broken crockery and old coffins but vandals and treasure hunters were already ahead of them.

The Committee on Culture and Arts together with the Office of the Mayor created the Jagna Culture and Arts Council, which will put out a commemorative book. This will be a joint effort of selected local writers. Almost all points of interests are taken up, from the pre Spanish times to the present. This book is expected to reach not only local but also national and international reader, wherever there are Jagnaanons and their descendants.

Since this book is likely to be made as reference by local high school and college students, it must be well written so it will be appreciated by the ordinary as well as intellectual readers. The Culture and Arts Council had been holding plenary sessions to go over the manuscripts to eliminate misinformation, malaprops and highly flowery yet senseless presentations. In short, they are trying to put up a presentable copy so the editor would not be tearing his hair or what may be ever left of it.

There is a tendency for a writer to obtain information from previous publications about Jagna without crosschecking for accuracy. There had been supposedly historical items but the presentation was highly opinionated and conjectural to be accurate. Besides the language, though English is a direct translation from the poetic vernacular that the context is lost among the verbiage and hardly understandable. Then there is a tendency for a new writer to indulge in poetic eloquence to the expense of understanding.

Kagawad Café must get well in a hurry. He is subbing for the mayor when the mayor is either busy or may not come on time as he is attending to various functions even if off hours. The deadline for the book is fast approaching. Besides his account in Cardo's will keep growing in his absence. The explorers will see to that

Hopefully the first draft will be out this month. The book must be presentable to wide spectrum of Jagnaanons. Where pictures may not be available, illustrations will have to do. Pictures tend to make the expatriates homesick and it may influence local tourism. In this book, Jagna is putting her best foot forward. Amay must come home even his leg might be in a cast.

Jagna-based columnist of Bohol Sunday Post

At long last the authorities are starting to realize the Jagna has a rich cultural heritage after all. When the Jagna Culture and Arts Council, JCAC, decided to put up a commemorative book, the first chapter was about the pre Hispanic past. A writer contended that Jagna was already an organized community with its culture and traditions. Although the ancient folks left no written records or permanent structures except stone hedges, the practice of secondary burial could be found.

Survey of the probable burial grounds by the writers of the commemorative book located some of them. One was in Cantagay and another Canupao point. Both were found in grottos or small caves. Both areas were vandalized. In Cantagay, a coffin was thrown out of the grotto and the bones were scattered. There was an evidence treasure hunting nearby. In Canupao where there was abundance of old bones, none are found now.

There are stories of other gravesites in Jagna. One is in Larapan, another in Odiong. At present JCAC writers are trying to locate a burial ground in Cansanga. Here may be other sites and hopefully, they have not yet been vandalized. The characteristics of burial grounds are they are found in small caves beneath cliffs. Most are almost inaccessible. Coffins for adults and infants may be found. Several skeletons occupy one coffin. Ceramic shards are usually found around the coffins.

Anthropologists say that those graves are evidences of secondary burial. Recent dead are buried in shallow graves then are exhumed after several years then placed in boat shaped coffins in small caves. The practice is almost similar to those to the mountain people of Luzon . They mummify their dead by smoking the cadaver then buried in almost inaccessible places like cliffs.

If several burial grounds are found farther inland, it means that Jagna was already a thriving community before the Spaniards came. There was already a division of labor like farmers and fishermen, craftsmen like carpenters and weavers as well as traders. That means we did not just come down from the trees.

JCAC writers had collected pieces of old bones and coffin splinters in such sites to have them carbon dated to determine their age. All living beings, plant or animal, absorb carbon during their lifetime. The absorption ceases when the creature dies. Along with the common carbon, a carbon isotope called Carbon 14 is also absorbed. Carbon 14 is radioactive, which means it radiates energy and while it radiates, it also deteriorates into another form of carbon.

The half-life of Carbon 14 is 5,730 years, which means a mass of Carbon 14 becomes one half after 5,730 years. Then this mass becomes half in another 5,730 years. The limit of Carbon 14 dating is 50,000 years. A margin of error is established at 300 years. A rough analogy may be made like thus. A kilogram of ice will melt in half if left under room temperature says 32 degrees Centigrade in thirty minutes.

If a kilogram block of ice left in a room 32 degrees warm weighs one half kilogram afterward, this means the block is in the room thirty minutes. If the same block weighs one-fourth kilogram, it mean the block is there for one hour. If the block weighs one-eighth kilogram later, it means it had been there for an hour and thirty minutes and so on.

Now that we are becoming culture conscious, local authorities would perhaps pass laws regulating treasure hunting and prevention of vandalism of burial sites. All artifacts found must be identified and if possible be the property of the town. Stiff penalties must be imposed to prevent violations. In doing so Jagna will preserve her cultural heritage, whatever was left of it.

BOHOLANO sensation Czar Amonsot left the country for the US with lot of hopes to put his tainted career back on track and to bring glory to the country.

On July 21, the WBO Asia Pacific Lightweight champion will fight the undefeated Australian WBO interim lightweight titlist Michael Katsidis under the Bernard Hopkins vs. Wingky Wright super middleweight bout in Las Vegas.

“The way Czar trained, we believe he has a good chance of winning. All of his problems before are no longer there. He is now very focused on his career because he knows it’s for him and for his family. His conditioning is very good,” said ALA Boys mentor Antonio Aldeguer.

The 22-year-old Boholano suffered a humiliating first round knockout defeat to Indonesian Simson Butar-Butar in September last year at his hometown in Tagbilaran City.

That defeat earned him a lot of criticism of his work habit and he was barred from wearing the fabled black ALA Gym shortsâ€"a symbol of dignity, discipline and determination.

However, Amonsot’s humility after learning his mistakes earned him a second chance and he proved it when he won the vacant WBO Asia Pacific 135-pound belt in Korea last February.

“He has proven that he has changed. He promised not to do it again and as a proof he is being escorted by his brother here at the gym. He is now more determined than ever and with this chance he gets, this is a good ground for him to rise from his mistakes,” added Aldeguer.

Amonsot and ALA Gym chief trainer Edito Villamor left yesterday for Las Vegas where former Cebu-based English boxing trainer Tony Martin is waiting to assist them in training.

Small and medium bakeries in Cebu, which are beneficiaries of the Canadian Executive Service Organization Business Advisory Project Phase 2 (Ceso-BAP) will soon be provided with loan assistance form a Dutch non-government organization.

Holland-based Oiko Credit Corp. (Oicko) has partnered with Cebu-BAP to offer an initial credit fund of P8 million to members of ProFood Organization, a group of small and medium bakery businesses in Bohol.

Ceso-BAP country manager Timothy Moiket said Oiko is allocating a P200-million credit facility to Cebu-BAP assisted companies but added that the agency is going to provide pilot works with Profood members.

"This assistance aims to help the baking industry in the Philippines," he said.

Cebu-BAP and Oiko are set to ink a memorandum of agreement with representatives from ProFood organization in Bohol to formalize the agreement between both parties.

The agency will also conduct a signing ceremony with the Gifts, Toys and Housewares Assocation of Exporters in Cebu (Cebu-GTH), for a subcontractor development project.

Ceso-BAP 2 is a bilateral project between the Philippines and Canada which began in 1999 and is funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (Cida).

It aims to increase the operating effectiveness of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Visayas and Mindanao.

Moiket said though that the eight-year program they have set up in the Philippines, which is now its second term, will end by next year.

He, however, assured sustainability of the program will be maintained through the Philippines Business of Social Progress (PBSP).

"Ceso-BAP is not a long-term program of Cida," said Moiket.

The project has long been partnering with PBSP in properly setting a sustainable enterprise developmental project in the Philippines.

He is confident though that the knowledge and expertise extended by the Canadian consultants of Ceso-BAP will be continued through the establishment of PBSP Business Advisory Program.

During the duration of the program, Moiket said Ceso_BAP had provided assistance to over 500 SMEs in Visayas and Mindanao that capitalized on the support coming from funds sourced from Canadian tax payers.

Unlike Canada's similar project also funded by Cida, the Pearl-2 program which focuses on helping business support organizations, Ceso-BAP is extending technical, marketing, organization and management system, technology, to individual companies and cluster industries.

PIA-Cebu

The Philippine Information Agency (PIA-7) in the region planted more than a hundred mangrove propagules and seedlings at the San Vicente Mangrove Plantation in Maribojoc, Bohol on June 25-26 as part of its team-building activity and in celebration of the environment month.

San Vicente Barangay Captain Rosalio Arocha in his briefing to the PIA-7 personnel said, the 56 hectares of Mangrove plantation in San Vicente, Maribojoc is a community-based sustainable project of the San Vicente Mangrove Association (SAVIMA) that has 50 active members from the community. The association manages its programs and projects that include Mangrove reforestation, handicraft livelihood and a one-day eco-tourism mangrove adventure package that the PIA-7 selected.

Part of the adventure was a river cruise that started at the Abatan River to the Tintinan Magrove plantation where a tour guide from the SAVIMA community briefed the PIA-7 personnel on how the province of Bohol manages its mangrove plantation through the efforts of the community with the assistance of other environmentally-oriented non-government organizations specifically in the capacity building of the local communities and the local government units in strictly implementing and enforcing various environmental laws.

The community-based SAVIMA in Maribojoc, Bohol started in 1995 to ward off big fishermen from encroaching in the area when they noted an alarming dropped of the local fishermen's catch of fishes, seashells and "Tacla," a local delicacy that has become almost an exotic food in Bohol.

Today, the Mangrove Reforestation and Plantation project of the SAVIMA in Maribojoc, Bohol is attracting thousands of local and foreign tourists that want to experience the real meaning of community-based management of projects that has been touted as Bohol's best practice in local governance.

The PIA-7 team was truly amazed at how the community treats their visitors the "Bohol vintage" way with the locals dressed in their native Maria Clara welcoming the team with hand-made recycled paper leis with shells as pendants and a sumptuous lunch (grilled Tangigue; clam soup with young coconut; mixed vegetables with the popular "Tacla"; various seashells and local fruits).

After a wholesome lunch treat, the PIA-7 team dared the 2-km boardwalk beneath the healthy growth of mangrove plantation to the Titinan bay where each staff was given mangrove propagules and seedlings to be planted in the area.

The team called it a day with pleasant sand, sea swimming and soaking at the white sand beaches of AlonaLand in Panglao, Bohol until dusk. To fill the empty stomachs, the team capped the night with a "Budol fight" dinner and a hilarious "card-reading" of Juju Manubag's future.

Bohol Latest News / End of Political Killings?
June 28, 2007, 11:17:56 AM
The Bohol Chronicle
June 27, 2007

"The end of political killings in the country may be drawing near."

Bayan Muna Rep. Satur Ocampo made this statement in the wake of disclosures made by three generals of the Armed Forces regarding discussions on extra-judicial killings by high-ranking military officers.

Ocampo bared, in an interview over dyRD's "Inyong Alagad," he
will re-file a resolution once Congress convenes, calling for a joint Senate and House investigating panel or create a commission to look into extra-judicial killings and other human rights violations.

"On a broader scale, if the congressional inquiries can ferret out the truth and find their linkage as we've been asserting that this has to do with the counter-insurgency program 'Oplan Bantay Laya' then we would be approaching the end of political killings," said Ocampo.

The militant leader said the string of disclosures by three generals "is a welcome move" together with Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Puno's proposal for a summit on extra-judicial killings.

Ocampo says he foresees "a breakthrough into the causes and motives of the political killings, through the disclosures of three generals, while the Armed Forces has consistently denied involvement."

"If the three generals would provide testimonies," according to Ocampo, "this will open the inquiry into the possibility that certain sections of the armed forces, have been responsible for the killings.'

Ocampo underscored that under International Humanitarian Law and the Geneva Convention, officers of the armed forces have the responsibility to protect civilians, "the three generals seem to recognize that."

He said if there is a link on the discussions of extra-judicial killings on the declaration of Pres. Gloria Arroyo to eliminate the insurgency problem by 2010, "then we have a clear case in determining who are principally responsible."

"There would be an expected response on the part of the government, specifically the executive branch, to take definitive action to stop the killings," Ocampo stressed.

'SUMMIT' WELCOMED

According to Ocampo, the summit proposed by Chief Justice Puno is welcomed by cause oriented groups.

"[This] indicates the Supreme Court's determination to put a stop to extra-judicial killings and other human rights violations," he said.

He added that a review of the rules of procedures to improve the chances of the victims' relatives to find justice by also making it harder for the perpetrators to escape responsibility is just proper and "a challenge to the judicial system" which the Supreme Court must address.

"If the executive and legislative departments will cooperate, we could fast track the holding of the summit," Ocampo said. "A consensus and new approaches must be introduced to put a closure into the cases of political killings."

Asked if he expects full cooperation from the military on the summit, Ocampo said, "All law enforcement agencies, the police and military included, have no option but to cooperate if the high tribunal calls for a public consultation."

"They should extend unqualified cooperation, which is the common purpose to uphold the rule of law" he concluded.

Hearings at the Regional Trial Court (RTC) on the petition of groups opposed to the oil and natural gas exploration at the Bohol-Cebu Strait is feared to drag on until next week.

Lawyer Raul Barbarona, Environmental Legal Assistance Center (ELAC) executive director told the Chronicle yesterday that since Monday, RTC Branch 4 Presiding Judge Achilles Melicor gave the petitioners an opportunity to explain the merits of the petition for certiorari, injunction and temporary restraining order (TRO) filed last week.

Hearings are likewise set on July 2 to 4 for oil exploration proponents NorAsian Energy Ltd. and the Department of Energy (DoE) to present their side, according to Barbarona.

Meanwhile, fishermen's groups, fishing workers and fish vendors staged a protest rally Monday at the Capitol simultaneous with a fluvial protest between the Cebu and Bohol waters.

The rally was attended by more than 100 vendors and fishermen and some 200 fishing boats.

According to Ira Pamat, the group's spokesperson, the two forms of mobilization will continue until the oil seismic survey at the Cebu side will be stopped.

Barbarona, however, fears that if the court could not issue a TRO tomorrow, NorAsian would commence their seismic exploration at the Bohol side. He said, survey at the Cebu flank is due to be completed tomorrow.

If this happens, Barbarona pointed out, his group will ask the DoE and NorAsian to honor their commitment not to proceed with the exploration until issues and concerns are ironed out.

A barangay captain in Cabilao (Loon) had told Barbarona that divers and some fishermen have already felt the impact of the seismic activity and the noise generated by M/V Pacific Sword, which is conducting the seismic exploration off Argao (Cebu), which is more or less 10 kilometers from Cabilao.

Fish catch have also declined significantly according fishermen's groups.

According to Barbarona, should the court deny the petition for TRO, hearings for certiorari and injunction will still be conducted.

The complaint filed by petitioners opposing the seismic survey are asking the court to declare null and void the certificate of non-coverage (CNC) that the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) issued to NorAsian Energy Ltd. through the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) - 7.

The absence of an environmental impact assessment for the project is also being questioned by the oppositors.

Barbarona said he hopes this petition will become a basis for future cases involving offshore oil exploration.

At present, a seismic survey, under Philippine laws, is just treated similar to land or cadastral surveys wherein environmental issues are not usually considered aside from the loss of income of fishermen in the survey area.

TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY

For his part, first district Rep. Edgar Chatto said, "with or without a TRO, the proponents (DoE and NorAsian) will have to resolve the issues and concerns (raised by those opposed) first before starting the oil exploration."

During a dialogue with NorAsian and DoE officials last Sunday, Chatto said the proponents have committed to allay the apprehensions of groups opposing the project.
The proponents have assured that basic data, information on the impact of the seismic survey, environmental concerns, loss of income of fishermen and destruction of their payaos were threshed out, Chatto disclosed.

Eco-tourism development is the growth agenda of the province, said the solon, "that is why Boholanos are very passionate in defending the environment as they are aware of the province's development plan."

How To Tips / 7 Secrets of the Super Organized
June 27, 2007, 02:25:26 PM
From <a href="http://www.dumblittleman.com">DumbLittleMan</a>

A few years ago, my life was a mess. So was my house, my desk, my mind. Then I learned, one by one, a few habits that got me completely organized.

Am I perfect? Of course not, and I don't aim to be. But I know where everything is, I know what I need to do today, I don't forget things most of the time, and my house is uncluttered and relatively clean (well, as clean as you can get when you have toddlers and big kids running around).

So what's the secret? In truth, there aren't any secrets. There are simple habits that you can develop over time that will get you to where you want to be. These are habits that you can apply to your work, your home, your kids, your hobbies, your life. Instead of giving you specifics for how to organize something specific, like your desk or your closet, I provide principles that you can use over and over in every situation.

Are these obvious principles? Sure, if you stop to think about them. You've read them in various other places. But you might not be applying them to your daily life, and that's where the problem lies. I'm just providing you with a step-by-step guide to what actually works, based on my experience and that of others.

If your life is a mess, like mine was, I don't recommend trying to get organized all in one shot. It's overwhelming. Instead, start with the first habit, and work your way down. Do it a little at a time, one area of your life at a time, one area of your home or office at a time. Work on a habit for a month or so, then move on to the next one. Or adopt two or three if you think you can handle it, but don't do them all at once. I also recommend you set aside some time each day (30 or 60 minutes) for organizing, at least in the beginning, until you are fairly organized and have your system down. Then, you might need 10 minutes a day, just to keep things running smoothly, and every now and then you might need to have a purge session (every 6 months or so) to get rid of accumulated buildup.

So here are the 7 habits:

   1. Reduce before organizing. The mistake most people make when trying to organize their stuff or their tasks or their projects is that they have a whole mess of things to organize, and it's too complicated. If you have a closet crammed full of stuff, sure, you can buy a bunch of closet organizers, but in the end, you'll still have a closet crammed full of stuff. Same thing with time management: you can organize a packed schedule, but it'll still be crammed full of tasks. The solution: reduce, eliminate, simplify. If you take your closet full of 100 things and throw out all but the 10 things you love and use, now you don't need a fancy closet organizer. Same thing with time management: if you have 20 things to do today, and reduce it to just the three most important tasks, you don't need a schedule anymore. How to reduce: take everything out of a closet or drawer or other container (including your schedule), clean it out, and only put back those items you truly love and really use on a regular basis. This will leave you with a pile of other stuff -- get rid of it by tossing it, donating it, selling it or giving it to somebody who will love it. If you can't bear to part with some of the stuff, put it in a "maybe" box and store it in your attic or basement or other storage space. Label it with a description and date, and six months later, when you haven't needed any of it, toss it.

   2. Write it down now, always. Our minds are wonderful things, but they leak like a sieve. We don't remember things when we need to remember them, and they continually come up when we don't need them. Instead of using your mind as storage for things you need to remember, write it down. I carry a small pocket notebook wherever I go, and write things down immediately. Then I process the ideas and tasks later into my calendar or to-do list, so I don't forget.

   3. Have one inbox & process. Well, actually you need two inboxes - one for home and one for work. But many people have many more than that -- paper comes to their desk and lands in a number of places. Phone messages get placed everywhere. Notes to self are posted all over the place. Instead, have one inbox, and put all incoming stuff in there. Then, once a day (or once a week at home if that works better for you), process the inbox to empty. Take an item out of the inbox and decide what to do with it, right away: toss it, delegate it, file it, put it on your to-do list, or do it now. Do the same thing to the next item, until your inbox is empty. Don't defer these decisions for later.

   4. A place for everything. Related to the above tip is to have a place for each item in your life. Where do your car keys go? You should have one place for them (next to the door is best) and you'll never lose them again. Where do your pens go? How about your magazines? I teach my kids to find a "home" for every toy or other item in their rooms (even still, their toys are mostly homeless wanderers, but they're kids) and that's a concept that works for us grown-ups too: each item should have a home, and if it doesn't, we need to designate one. Labels can help you remember where those homes are. Now, if you find something on your table or counter top or on you bed or on your desk, you know that it doesn't belong there. Find its home -- don't just toss something anywhere. The same concept applies to information: do you have one place where you put all your information? If not, try a personal wiki -- it's accessible from work and home, and you can create pages for each type of information in your life -- schedules, goals, to-dos, movies to watch, books to read, notes on projects, etc.

   5. Put it away now. Most people have a habit of putting something on a table or counter top or on their desk with the intention of "putting it away later". Well, this is how things get messy and disorganized. Instead, put it away now -- in its home. It only takes a few seconds, and this one habit will save you a lot of cleaning and sorting and organizing later. When you find yourself putting something down, catch yourself, and force yourself to put it away now. After a little while, it will become second nature.

   6. Clean as you go. Closely related to Habit 5, this habit is effective because it's much easier to clean things as you work or as you move through your day than to let them pile up and do a big cleaning session later. So if you're cooking, try to wash your dishes as you use them, and wipe the counter, instead of leaving a huge mess. Same principle applies to everything we do. If it's easier to do it in smaller increments, we are more likely to do it. If there is a huge mess to clean, we are more likely to be intimidated or overwhelmed by it and leave it for later.

   7. Develop routines & systems. If you've gotten everything uncluttered and organized, you might sit back and enjoy the pleasantness of it. Being organized and having a simplified working environment or home is tremendously satisfying. But the problem is that after a little while, things tend to start to get disorganized and cluttered again. Things tend to gravitate towards chaos. The solution: you need to develop systems to keep your organization in place. For example, the inbox processing mentioned above is a system: you have specific procedures for processing all incoming papers, and you have a routine for doing it (once a day). All systems follow the same guidelines -- specific procedures and a routine that is done at a set interval (three times a day, once a day, once a week, once a month, etc.). It's important that you identify the systems you have in your life (and they exist, even if you don't know they do -- but they may be complicated and chaotic) and write them out so that you can make them efficient, simple, and organized. Develop systems for dealing with paperwork and mail, with kids schedules, with errands and laundry and chores and exercise and everything else. Once those systems are in place, you need to be vigilant about keeping them going, and then things will stay organized.

Weird and Extreme / Man wants to die laughing...
June 27, 2007, 02:12:34 PM
By Jim Forsyth
<a href="http://www.reuters.com">Reuters</a>

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Reuters) - A Texas man scheduled to be executed on Tuesday wants to die laughing.

Patrick Knight, 39, has been soliciting jokes on the Internet and plans to tell one of them before receiving a lethal injection, Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokeswoman Michelle Lyons said on Monday.

"He says he wants to keep his execution light," she said.

Knight was sentenced to die for the August 1991 murder of his two elderly neighbors in Amarillo, Texas.

Lyons said a friend of Knight's set up a page on the social networking Web site MySpace.com to solicit jokes, and "hundreds" of suggestions have arrived in the mail.

"I'll be enjoying my last days on Earth," Knight wrote on the Web site. "I'm not asking for pen pals, but I'm asking you to spread the word that I am holding a contest. I want people to send me their best jokes, and to keep me and others with (execution) dates laughing."

Texas leads the nation with 396 executions. None of those put to death have ever joked about it, Lyons said.

"We've certainly had some people who have recited a poem or a Bible verse, some people who have asked forgiveness or who pray," she said. "This is, to my knowledge, the first time anybody has told a joke as their last words."

While she says Knight will be allowed to tell his joke, none of his executioners in the state death chamber at the Walls prison unit in Huntsville, Texas will be laughing, Lyons said.

"Everybody who is there takes it very seriously and will not be participating in the joke," she said. "So knock-knock jokes are out."

Early Development

Created by virtue of Act 2711 on March 10, 1917, this island province of Bohol is the 10th largest island of the Philippines. Its people are said to be descendants of the last group of inhabitants of the country called "pintados," meaning the tattooed ones.

The name Bohol was supposedly derived firom the word Bool, the place where the first known international treaty of friiendship between two people of the different races, culture, religion and civilization occured in 1565 between Datu Sikatuna, a native chieftain and Miguel Lopez de Legaspi, representing the King of Spain through a blood compact known today ar the "Sandugo." In honor of this occasion, the late Pres. Elpidio Quirino established the Order of Sikatuna, a pesidential decoration conferred upon diplomats.

During the Spanish regime, two significant revolts occurred in Bohol. One was the Tamblot Uprising in 1621 led by a native priest or Babaylan. The other was the Dagohoy Rebellion considered so the longest uprising recorded in the annals of Philippine history, led by Francisco Dagohoy fiom 1744 lasting until the year 1829.

It was also during the Spanish era that Bohol was politically part of Cebu and was called a residencia. It became a separate politico-military province on July 22, I854 together with the island of Siquijor.

In 1879, Bohol was composed only of 34

The Americans, lad by Major Henry Hale of the 44th infantry Battalion, arrived in Tagbilaran on March 17, 1900. The Japanese also occupied Bohol several years later during the World War II. The Americans liberation forces arrived in Bohol on April 11, 1945.

Significant Dates and Events

1200 â€" Lutaos from northern Mindanao, arrived and established themselves in the strait between mainland Bohol and the island of Panglao and founded the "Kingdom of Dapitan," a maritime city on stilts that later rose to such power and properity it was described by Alcina as a "Venice of the East."

1563 â€" The Dapitan Kingdom was abandoned by its people for fear of the marauding Ternateans and their Portuguese allies who brought depredation on the other settlements in Bohol.

1565 â€" Miguel Lopez de Legaspi and his men landed at a little bay in Bohol and, having befriended the local chieftain, Datu Sikatuna proceeded to make a treaty of friendship with him through the Blood Compact.

November 17, 1596 â€" Two Jesuit priests, Fr. Juan de Torres and Fr. Gabriel Sanchez, arrived in Baclayon at the invitation of the mother of the 'encomendero' of Bohol, Doña Catalina de Bolaños, and started the process of evangelization.

October 26, 1600 â€" Some 300 Maguindanao Moros under the command of Datu Sali and Datu Sirongan raided Baclayon. Fearing for their safety, the Jesuits decided to move their headquarters to the inland town of Loboc. Since then, Loboc became the 'residential Boholana' or the place where the local Jesuit superior resided.

1602 â€" Loboc became the first parish in the island.

1604 â€" The Jesuits established the Seminario Colegio de Indios in Loboc, a training school for the children of the local ruling class. Among the students of this school was the native boy, Miguel Ayatumo, who died in sanctity at the age of sixteen in 1609.

1621 â€" The babaylan leader, Tamblot revolted against the new religion brought by the Spanish missionaries.

1733 â€" The Jesuits had established six settlements or reducciones where people were forced to live to facilitate both Christianization and taxation. These reducciones are Loboc, Baclayon, Jagna, Talibon, Inabanga and Maribojoc.

1744 â€" Francisco Dagohoy from the reduccion of Inabanga started the revolt that was to last more than eighty nine years.

1768 â€" The Jesuits were expelled from the country. Their missions were taken over by the Agustinian Recollects headed by their former Provincial, Fray Pedro de Santa Barbara.

1800 â€" The Augustinian Recollects had established other towns in Bohol: Tagbilaran, Dimiao, Guindulman, Panglao and Loon.

August 28, 1829 â€" Upon orders of Gov. Gen. Mariano Ricafort, an expeditionary force from Cebu led by Capt. manuel Sanz captured the Cave of Caylagon where the remnants of Francisco Dagohoy's rebel forces made their last stand: The survivors of the final assault were pardoned and resettled in newly created townships in the interior parts of Bohol.

July 22, 1854 â€" Bohol became a separate province from Cebu.

April 1899 â€" Upon the departure of the Spaniards in Bohol, a "Gobierno de Canton" was formed by prominent Boholanos to run the province according to the Republic proclaimed by Amilio Aguinaldo.

March 17, 1900 â€" American troops landed in Bohol.

September 3, 1900 â€" Col. Pedro Samson and other Boholano leaders rose in organized resistance against the Americans. What followed were months of bloodshed fought between the American forces and the Boholano freedom fighters. During this dark period, hundreds of Boholanos died and 20 of the 35 towns of Bohol, at the time, were burned to the ground and livestock were slaughtered indiscriminately in the effort to force the Boholanos to submission.

December 23, 1900 â€" Col. Pedro Samson and the rest of the Boholano insurgents surrendered to the Americans in a peace treaty signed in the convent of Dimiao. Peace came to Bohol at last, but not after hundreds more died the following year due to the cholera epidemic that followed the great war.

May 17, 1942 â€" Japanese forces landed in Tagbilaran. They stayed until March, 1945 when American liberation forces drove them away.

World Daily News / US Senate revives migration plan
June 27, 2007, 08:20:33 AM
<a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk">BBC NEWS</a>

The US Senate has voted to revive discussion of a wide-ranging plan for immigration reform.

The bill is supported by President George W Bush, who has said the issue is at the top of his domestic agenda.

The legislation would bring in tighter border controls but offer 12m illegal immigrants a path to citizenship.

The bill faltered in the Senate earlier this month when it failed to win the backing of enough Republicans to move to a final vote.

Senators on Tuesday voted 64-35 to resume debate on the compromise legislation, which was put together by both Republican and Democratic leaders and the White House.

Personal appeal

However, it faces a bumpy ride in the next few days as its backers try to push it through before Friday, when the Senate will break for a week-long recess, correspondents say.

Senate leaders have added an extra $4.4bn (£2.2bn) funding for border security in an attempt to overcome Republican opposition.

Democratic Senator Edward Kennedy, one of the sponsors of the bill, said the compromise measure "may not be perfect, but it is the best opportunity we have to do something significant and substantial".

However, Republican Senator Jim DeMint warned the legislation would continue to face stiff opposition from some senators, many of whom are under pressure from conservative voters to block its progress.

"The momentum against this bill is growing all across the country," he said.

Mr Bush responded with a personal appeal to his party to back the legislation, attending a Republican policymakers' luncheon on Capitol Hill to press his point.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday's vote to resume debate, he urged Congress not to miss a "historic opportunity" to reform a system that was not working.

Critics' concerns

The deadlock followed a series of amendments to the proposed bill, which undermined the fragile bipartisan compromise.

Illegal immigration is among voters' top concerns and is set to be a key issue in the 2008 presidential poll.

Under the proposed Senate bill, illegal immigrants would be able to seek a new "Z visa" - which would allow them to stay in the country but must be renewed every two years - after paying a $5,000 (£2,530) fine.

To get the Z visa, they would have to pass a background check, remain employed and receive a tamperproof identity card.

They could ultimately be placed on the path to permanent residency - a process that could take several years.

The bill also set out a "points system" that emphasises immigrants' education, language and job skills over family connections in awarding green cards.

But these measures would not come into force until 18,000 new border guards are deployed, the fence with Mexico reinforced and hi-tech surveillance put in place.

Some critics have labelled it an "amnesty" for those who have illegally entered the US.

Others have argued that its guest worker programme threatens US workers, or that it will create an underclass of cheap foreign labourers.

Let the love of Christ reign in your hearts.

Suffering often occurs at the hand of others. But it has a way of revealing what is in our own hearts. Capacities for love, mercy, anger, envy, and pride can lie dormant until awakened by circumstances.

Strength and weakness of heart is found not when everything is going our way but when flames of suffering and temptation test the mettle of our character. As gold and silver are refined by fire, and as coal needs time and pressure to become a diamond, the human heart is revealed and developed by enduring the pressure and heat of time and circumstance.

Strength of character is shown not when all is well with our world but in the presence of human pain and suffering (Job 42:1-17; Romans 5:3-5; James 1:2-5; 1 Peter 1:6-8).

Inspiration & Hope / The Perfect Storm
June 27, 2007, 07:08:19 AM
They feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!” â€"Mark 4:41

In his book The Perfect Storm, author Sebastian Junger reports astonishing facts about the power of a hurricane: “A mature hurricane is by far the most powerful event on earth; the combined nuclear arsenals of the United States and the former Soviet Union don’t contain enough energy to keep a hurricane going for one day. A typical hurricane . . . could provide all the electric power needed by the United States for three or four years.”

Seafarers encounter diverse weather conditions. But those who experience a severe storm have one emotion in commonâ€"fear. Mark 4:35-41 records a gale that threatened the boat carrying Jesus and His disciples on the Sea of Galilee. In a panic, the disciples awakened Jesus. He calmly rebuked the wind and sea by saying, “Peace, be still!” (literally “hush”) as if He were quieting an agitated child (v.39). Immediately, the gale stopped and the water became inexplicably placid. The disciples asked, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!” (v.41).

Do you feel as if your life’s circumstances are a mighty storm? Look to the God-man Jesus Christ, who has authority over heaven and earth. He will give you the strength to survive the storm until He ultimately calms it. â€"Dennis Fisher

Our loving God is always near,
Forever by our side;
He’ll bring us comfort in our fear
And peace that will abide.
â€"Sper

When we trust the power of God, His peace keeps us from panic.
