2. Home

Get married, start a family, have kids. Will they grow up into fine people? Have you got the hang of father/motherhood? Is your home really your castle, a cocoon of comfort? Or is it just a house with people in it? The card really stops here.

10 things that money can't buy

Siddhartha Sharma

Here is how mankind tells money, quoting from the Book of Job: "Thus far shalt thou go, and no farther." Here are the ten things money can't buy.

1. Family and friends

The greenbacks won't bring you any closer to your family if you are far too busy earning them. Nor will they guarantee your family understands you at all. (Mummy's cooking is a sub-group in this 'things you can't buy anywhere' list.)

There are exceptions to this. You might just pay off irritating in-laws to stay out of your hair, or order a hit on them. But in the normal course...

With friends, it works the same way, only more so. If your wealth draws them, they aren't real. If they don't stay, or your life has no place for them, you are on your own. With real friends, you've almost got it made.

an interesting tidbit from 2008:

Princess of the Stars 5th to sink, not 4th
July 7, 2008

MANILA, Philippines â€" I wonder why the vessel MV Boholana Princess, also owned by Sulpicio Lines, is never mentioned among the Sulpicio vessels that sank. I also wonder why there was no news of the sinking at that time.

I was a passenger on that ill-fated voyage and here’s my first-hand account: MV Boholana Princess left Cebu for Ormoc at 11 p.m. on Dec. 15,1990. Past midnight, the boat suddenly tilted to the left at an angle of 45 degrees. Passengers were startled out of their sleep, wondering what was happening. But there was no announcement through the public address system, or word from the ship’s captain and crew, about what was going on.

The passengers then scrambled to get life jackets. It was so dark outside the boat that jumping into the sea never crossed our minds. We were stranded for hours. Fishermen arrived to rescue us. But up to that point, there was still no announcement from the captain or from any crew member about what was happening. Finally, we started to evacuate the sinking vesselâ€"with help from the fishermen, but none from the crew. Eventually, we all made it out of the ship.

Oh, by the way, before we left the boat, a guy asked us to surrender the vests we were wearing because they belonged to Sulpicio Lines. Yes, this happened many years ago, but everything is still so vivid in my mind because that incident made me scared of riding boats. This may be hearsay: while we were still on board, there was talk that the boat had hit a reef while the crew were in a drinking session. Still, we were all just grateful to God that nobody perished in that accident. It was all that mattered to us thenâ€"that we all came out of the accident alive.

In retrospect, we could have filed a suit against Sulpicio Lines because there was no announcement from the captain and crew about what had happened, and there was no rescue effort initiated by Sulpicio Lines.

Maybe the incident was never reported because there was no casualty. But all the passengers felt that the accident was caused by gross negligence. I hope an investigation into this incident will be conducted, because that will establish that MV Princess of the Stars was the fifthâ€"not the fourthâ€"Sulpicio ship to sink.

â€"GARDENIA LARRAZABAL, via e-mail

We checked this account with the Philippine Coast Guard. It is indeed on record that MV Boholana Princess, among 14 Sulpicio vessels that figured in an accident between 1986 and 1998, ran aground in 1990.â€"Ed. (A Letter from a PDI Reader)

Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama called a press conference to allow officials of 2GO to give updates on the search for passengers of their roll-on-roll-off ship which sank at Lawis Ledge in Talisay City last Friday night.

Labella recalled that he wore his life vest and jumped out of the boat when he noticed that it was about to capsize.

He said he never thought that he would survive the night.

He said his faith in God and prayers made him survive his ordeal.

"I am positive that there are more survivors in this sea mishap since the ship sank near the shoreline," he said.

Labella: Don't give up on passengers

CEBU City Vice Mayor Edgar Labella called on search and rescue teams not to give up in their efforts to find passengers from the sunken MV St. Thomas Aquinas.

Recalling his own ordeal in the Sept. 8, 1998 sinking of the MV Princess of the Orient of Sulpicio Lines, Labella said he was afloat for 36 hours clad in a life vest until he was found by rescuers.

"I was the last survivor," Labella recalled. The vessel he rode in sailed from the port of Manila even in the middle of a typhoon.

It capsized about 12:55 pm. near Fortune Island in Batangas, leaving 150 of its 388 passengers dead.

Philippine Span Asia was previously named Sulpicio Lines Inc.

In October 1988, Sulpicio's Dona Marilyn ferry sank off Leyte island amid a typhoon, killing more than 250 people. In 1988, another 150 were killed when the firm's Princess of the Orient sank in a port near Manila in similarly bad weather.

It also owned the MV Princess of the Stars, which set sail during a storm in 2008 and sank. Only about 50 of the 850 people on board survived.

Arnie Santiago, head of the maritime authority's enforcement division, said Sulpicio Lines was suspended after the 2008 disaster, then re-emerged with its new name of Philippine Span Asia.

this explains it a bit.

Go said changing the company name in 2009 was unrelated to the previous accidents, but did not explain what the reasons were.

Go is the grandson of Sulpicio Go, a Chinese Filipino businessman who founded the firm in 1973.

It cornered a major chunk of the domestic shipping industry in the 1980s by taking advantage of a law that reserved domestic routes for Filipinos.

Currently, its fleet consists of two passenger ferries and 10 cargo vessels that operate nationwide, Go said.

Maximo Mejia, head of government regulatory body the Maritime Industry Authority, said both vessels had previously passed safety inspections and were seaworthy.

"There is no reason to believe that the incident has anything to do with questions of stability or structural integrity of the ships," Mejia told reporters, indicating human error may be to blame.

Mejia noted that officials of both firms had been "fully cooperative", with Philippine Span Asia also helping out in the search.

Nonetheless, Mejia said he had temporarily suspended the fleets of Philippine Span Asia as well as that of 2Go Group, which owned the sunken ferry, pending investigations.
#20054
But he insisted the company's track record had nothing to do with the accident on Friday night, when his firm's cargo vessel collided with a ferry that quickly sank, leaving 31 people dead and 171 missing.

"It's immaterial to what happened right now," Go told AFP when asked to comment about the firm's history of accidents.

In Friday's incident, the Sulpicio Express 7 cargo ship was trying to leave the central city of Cebu's port via a narrow channel while the St Thomas Aquinas ferry was trying to sail in the opposite direction, authorities said.

After the vessels collided, the ferry sank within 10 minutes while the cargo vessel was able to reach dock with its steel bow crushed in.

Ferry disaster is fifth tragedy for Philippine firm

By Jason Gutierrez | AFP News â€" 18 August 2013

A company whose cargo ship was involved in the Philippines' latest ferry disaster confirmed Saturday its vessels were involved in four other tragedies that claimed more than 5,000 lives.

The first of those accidents occurred in 1987 when the firm's Dona Paz ferry collided with an oil tanker, leaving more than 4,300 dead in the world's worst peacetime maritime disaster.

Philippine Span Asia Carrier Corp. chief executive and president Jordan Go told AFP his family's company owned the Dona Paz as well as the ships involved in the four other accidents.

list of the most notable maritime incidents or tragedies in the Philippines

MV Doña Paz

    Owned by Sulpicio Lines
    Date December 20, 1987
    Casualties 4,341

The Doña Paz was en route from Catbalogan, on Samar Island, Philippines, to Manila when, while it was in the Tablas Strait, between islands of Mindoro and Tablas, it collided with a small oil tanker, the Vector, which was carrying 8,800 barrels of petroleum products. More than 4,000 are killed in what is described as the world's worst peacetime maritime tragedy.

MT Vector

The Vector M/T Vector, owned by Vector Shipping, Inc., at that time was on a charter voyage for Caltex Philippines, now Chevron.

The Vector's cargo ignited and caused a fire that rapidly spread onto the Doña Paz, which sank within minutes. Two of the 13 crew members aboard the Vector survived but all 58 crew of the Doña Paz died.

Rice.
Do you use a coffee or spice grinder? Chances are, it’s filled with gunk in little crevices you can’t reach. To clean it out, simply pour in a handful of uncooked rice, and grind away! The rice will absorb all that build-up.

Olive oil.
Forgot to buy shaving cream at the supermarket? Use olive oil! Olive oil is thick, it cuts down chances of getting nicks and razor burn. Plus, it’s a natural moisturizer for your skin, too; no need to slather on lotion afterwards.

Eggs.
Egg yolks are rich in fats and proteins, making them great moisturizers; the whites contain bacteria-eating enzymes, which help remove unwanted oils. So the next time you buy a dozen, keep some for your hair. Yes, your hair! For normal hair, use the entire egg; for oily hair, just use the whites; and if you’ve got dry, brittle hair, bring on the yolk! Coat your locks with the egg mixture appropriate for your hair type, leave on for 20 minutes, then rinse with cool water (using warm water might cook the eggs!). Do whole-egg treatments once a month, and whites-only every two weeks.

Ground coffee.
Before dumping into the trash, consider mixing with some sugar and olive oil for a D-I-Y coffee scrub in the shower! The only downside to this is, you might smell like a walking coffee cup afterwards. (You could remedy that with some moisturizing lotion.) If you’re not keen on a coffee scrub, toss the ground coffee in your vegetable garden instead. Coffee is high in nitrogen, which most vegetable plants love.

Baking soda.
Use it as a dry cleanser to remove gunk in sinks, bath tubs, and toiletsâ€"they work really well on cleaning chrome fixtures, too! Just sprinkle baking soda on a damp cloth and wipe away. Then simply rinse off with water. Also, did you know you could use baking soda to clean your teeth, too? A paste made out of baking soda and a bit of water works as well as toothpaste. It naturally cleans the mouth and whitens teeth!

Avocado.
Not only is it yummy, but it also doubles as an anti-aging face mask. Avocado is rich in antioxidants and fatty acids, and its oils help stimulate collagen and elastin production. Puree a ripe avocado and mix in ¼ cup sour cream (the lactic acid in the sour cream will help exfoliate dead skin cells). Spread over your face, and leave for 10 minutes before rinsing.

10 grocery items that do double duty

When you run out of cleaning agents, moisturizers, or even toothpaste, run to your kitchen for supplies!

Vodka.
Aside from causing some people to sing off-key, vodka is also a great insect repellent. Because of its high alcohol content, a few spritzes of it on a bug scares the sorry bug away, drunk as a loon. Also, vodka keeps cut flowers fresh longer. Much like friends coming over for a nightcap, you can make flowers last longer by giving them some vodka! Add a few drops of vodka and a large pinch of sugar to the water in the vase. Change the water-vodka-sugar mixture daily to stunt ethylene production (ethylene is the gas that makes flowers age and wilt).

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has also canceled the passports of Napoles and Lim to prevent them from leaving the country.

DFA spokesman Raul Hernandez said the DFA readily granted the DOJ’s request and canceled the passports of Napoles and Lim.

He said the DFA also informed the Bureau of Immigration and Philippine foreign service posts and consular offices around the world about the cancellations.

Ordered arrested

A Makati court has ordered the arrest without bail of Napoles and her brother Reynald Lim for serious illegal detention involving Benhur Luy, the principal witness in the pork barrel scam.

Napoles and Lim disappeared after learning that they would be arrested.

They are now the subjects of a nationwide manhunt launched on Thursday by the NBI and the Philippine National Police.

“Out of the 415 accounts, 107 are in the name of Napoles herself, aka Jannet Napoles Lim or Jenny Lim. The accounts are in 17 banks/banking institutions and six insurance companies,” De Lima said.

Among the bank accounts ordered frozen were those of JLN Group of Companies, dominated by Napoles and her family and friends, and 20 nongovernment organizations Napoles allegedly used to siphon off P10 billion in lawmakers’ pork barrel allocations into her bank accounts over the last 10 years.

The appeals court ordered the freeze to grant a petition brought by the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) through the Office of the Solicitor General, an agency under the justice department.

The AMLC recommended a freeze following requests from the National Bureau of Investigation and the Office of the Ombudsman, which are separately investigating the pork barrel scam.

Justice Secretary Leila de Lima on Saturday clarified that ordered frozen were 415, not 46, bank accounts of fugitive Janet Lim-Napoles and other persons and nongovernment organizations involved in the alleged P10-billion pork barrel scam.

Napoles is allegedly the mastermind behind the P10-billion pork barrel scam that the DOJ and the National Bureau of Investigation are investigating.

The freeze order covered 344 bank accounts, 66 insurance policies and five possibly credit card accounts, De Lima said.

Science and Research / When galaxies collide?
August 18, 2013, 07:36:07 AM

A Chandra X-ray observatory image of a massive cloud of multimillion-degree gas in a galaxy about 60 million light years from Earth. The hot gas cloud is likely caused by a collision between a dwarf galaxy and a much larger galaxy called NGC 1232. If confirmed, this discovery would mark the first time such a collision has been detected only in X-rays, and could have implications for understanding how galaxies grow through similar collisions. The majority of cases involved Muslims from Pakistan, Bangladesh and India, although Sikhs and Hindus were also being forced into marriage. Ministers believe that a key to stamping out the practice is better enforcement of immigration rules. Most victims of forced marriages sponsor immigration applications for their new spouse and are too frightened to alert the authorities. (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/)
#20086
Forced marriage is a marriage in which one or both of the parties is married without his or her consent or against his or her will.

A forced marriage differs from an arranged marriage, in which both parties consent to the assistance of their parents or a third party (such as a matchmaker) in identifying a spouse, although the difference between the two may be indistinct.

The practice of forced marriage is still practiced in the parts of South Asia, East Asia and Africa and among immigrants to the West from these regions.

The term Lost Generation was coined by Gertrude Stein, who said, "You are all a Lost Generation."

The Lost Generation was lost in that the values that its members were being taught didn't fit the reality of life after the brutal and horrifying World War I. The group of writers who moved to Paris believed that America was intolerant, materialistic, and unspiritual. They helped to establish many of the styles and themes that are still used in literature today. (http://1920sgirls.tripod.com/)

The Lost Generation

The Lost Generation were young people who came out of World War I disillusioned and cynical about the world. The term usually refers to American literary notables who lived in Paris at the time. Famous members included T.S.Eliot, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Gertrude Stein. These authors, also referred to as expatriates, wrote novels and short stories expressing their resentment towards the materialism and individualism that was rampant during this era.

In England, the Bright Young People were young aristocrats and socialites who threw fancy dress parties, went on elaborate treasure hunts, were seen in all the trendy venues, and were well covered by the gossip columns of the London tabloids.[/i](wikipedia)[/i]
