Jig, naay daghang pinoy diri nga akong na-ilhan nga mo-resist assimilation. There's nothing wrong with absorbing and learning the culture as long as you appreciate and never forget where you came from. From my observation, thesame people who only hangs-out with other pinoys, only eats filipino food and don't socialize with the other cultures are the ones who are typhoon no. 3 nig abot sa ato.

Those kinds will never have a foreign perspective because they don't see it that way. If they do, they're lucky they stumbled upon it on their own. Most of the time, we need to be shown.

I consider myself lucky, when I first moved here, I lived with my American family for a year, our filipino store in Florida sucked and the pinays I ran into always asked me if I was from Angeles since they assumed being a pilot, my husband was in the military (which he was not).So my friends from there were all non-filipinos.

In Houston, if I don't venture south, I don't see a lot of fellow pinoys. Most of the people I worked with were non-pinoys, mostly whites and Mexicans. You can't truly appreciate the beauty of Bohol until you hear the "oohs and aah's and I want to go there's " of your non-pinoy friends and family. The wonder and fascination in their eyes makes you feel so proud and special to have come from such a beautiful place that you automatically feel protective.

Maybe, in all her years, the lady in question has never had those moments. Never had foreign friends and relatives envy her for coming from such a beautiful paradise...or never had someone tell her how lucky she is to have grown up with nature all around her. Who knows, maybe that feeling of protectiveness has never overtaken her when she looks at all her Bohol Vacation and holiday pics..or even photos of her childhood

wow, quite a mouthful to digest you gave me there girl! always true to form :) bitaw, i agree. morag wa mogawas sa iyang comfort zone and the memories of home.

off topic, i know houston is a big city. i have HS classmate who now lives there with his family. maguwang ni board member ae. dont know if you have met.

Macky, sadly, when people are immersed in their political ass kissing activities of daily life, they don't think for the longterm. They think for the next three years calculating how much money they can make and how they can make their name immortal. ITs always a race for re-election and the hope of starting a political dynasty. ( next mayor wife, then daughter...etc like the Chattos of Balilihan)

Its easy to see once you're looking at it from a distance, but when I remember how a lot of the people there don't give a rat's ass about a lot of things not concerning their daily lives, i can understand that its not even mean, or intentional or even murderous..it just never crossed their minds.

Maybe someday,  when the basic need of food...guaranteed 3 meals a day are met, our people will think bigger. For now, we can't really blame them.

If you've ever been to the slums and ghettos of the US, its like being in the rougher areas of manila. potholes on the road, broken windows covered with scotch tape, no garden in sight and no trees either. When you go to suburbia, middle class areas, there's tons of trees and the yard always boasts of some sort of a garden.

I'm just saying....hopefully, someday, someone can take the time out of their ass kissing, corruption planning day to actually think about the most basic needs of the people and make sure those are met so they can move on to other....less pressing needs. (ego tripping with "monuments")

di ba kining atong perspective as "foreigner" gives hope to our beloved native land kung kitay molansad sa posisyon? unfortunately, this is not true with the sad experience in guindulman.

not sure about the others. i am half bol-anon but raised in bohol until mid-teens. but bohol will always be home.

am married to a fellow bol-anon and have two sons who are born in UK. we are keen to raise them aware of their filipino and bol-anon roots.

now live in UK for the past 8 years and then some more. hopefully, will retire in bohol.

Luckily, it is not really tough here with us. If the answer like this is clear and honest, then it is okay. We talked direct to our superiors in this manner.

i think there's a difference between european and american way of working. my working habit is i dont complain i do it even if overloaded na. but my bosses here in UK will not have it. prankahon ka nga. you have to ask questions. you have to say no. health and safety is important here in europe. ang UK workforce gani is considered overworked compared to their continental counterparts. kalami siguro mo-trabaho diha sa germany, mam hofelina?

sayang.

dili ika-deny nga mapasahan jud sa noynoy magic si montano. pero, sa akong nahibaw-an nagkugi man tawon ni ug suroy sa kabaryohan. kahibawo man siya siguro nga iwit siya unya uwahi na mingsud mao nga nag-double time. reminds me of the fable of the turtle and the hare(s). hmmmm

as i said elsewhere, montano is right not to get involved in the melee between the two leading candidates. siya man ang beneficiary unya ani.

sayang for chatto nga ugaling mahitabo nga mapilde siya. but who started this mess with the palaka party in bohol? sobra ra sa paneguro mao niy resulta.

The result of the election on Monday will be the real survey :) Mudslinging will not help you guys. Boholanos hates below-the-belt tactics just like what Herrera and Montano are doing. Peace men. You started it so we will end it tomorrow.

look whos talking alex tan. dont fool us into believing that your chatto is immaculately clean. nobody is. below the belt my foot. dont worry, if your candidate wins we will be his harshest critics labi kung di na big majority win. if he wins by slim lead he is a lameduck governor. well, maayo hinuon kung modaug na tan-awon nato unsay iyang diskarte with noynoy as president, abapo/jala as vice-gov, aumentado as 2nd district rep. can he do alliance/unity like aumentado? i doubt it very much. i know you business lot will be singing and dancing happy days are here again. that's what you are after in a chatto win, anyway.

please, naman.  give the university credit for professionalism and the stakes it has in such surveys (credibility, for one).  both chatto and herrera are svd products anyway.  (hnu for chatto, usc boys high for herrera.)  the university has nothing to gain over whoever wins but everything to lose if it plays around data gathered.  if it's bad news if one's candidate isn't leading, please don't shoot the messenger.

agree, hnu has everything to lose kung magbinuang sila. tungod lang sa election, i doubt they will do that. is it magbalantay who said that hnu's record speaks for itself. its past surveys have been right. i go for MONTANO but i understand why chatto is leading. but he maybe in for a big surprise, which i sincerely hope so :) survey results are not gospel truth and the surveyors themselves say that. just take it with a grain of salt but dont rub it on your wound hehehe

Survey says UK is in for a hung parliament. Results? We are a hung parliament. Enough said!

Noynoy started at 60% and will end in around 40%. Surveys upon surveys have resulted in him always at the top. Even from surveys paid for by his opponents. Pasanginlan na pud nang tig-survey. Ang ngiwit ngiwit bisan unsaon pa.

I usually never get involved in Philippine politics.I still don't.I recently ask my family who runs for governor. My best friend is the same fraternity with Herrera and asked me to tell my big clan in Bohol to vote for him.I know I can tell them to do so but I respect their opinion also.My mom said they are for Chatto.
As for Montano I seen him only in my TFC channel.Sorry I did not like of you bringing his son with what is going on in politics. That is like hitting the person " BELOW THE BELT ".One tragedy in a persons life doesn't make that human being  incapable in achieving his  ambition and at the same time a good person.

We all have our own biased political influences.  On a global scale, we argue about the republican-democratic war-on-terrorism solutions.  We agree to take our hats off in honor of the most theoretically powerful person in the world, Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.  We debate about the ethical/unethical ways of King Abdul’s absolute monarchic government.  On a national level, we argue about who should be president; who deserve the vacant upper house seats; why him; why her; and so on.  It’s a tough battle.  Poll handlers are getting less and less reliable and it seems the best way to get this going is to vote for the ones we truly see fitâ€"not those whom we think will win.  The habit of supporting the biggest dog is one employed by feeble-minded bums who don’t know how to thinkâ€"those who stand without principles.

Let us now visit the provincial level and talk about the most wildly coveted political seat:  the governor’s.  I helped Edgar Chatto get re-elected into congress three years ago.  Back then, I was 19.  It was my first time to vote and I knew little of the political brouhaha going on in Bohol, particularly in the first district.  My parents both vote in Bohol.  Dad is registered in Valencia and mom in Tagbilaran â€" same as I.  Naturally, we had the same choice for a representative.  She’s close friends with one of Chatto’s first cousins and I’m tight with his daughter, Trisha.  I’ll admit: at the outset, I was apathetic towards my decision to support this candidate.  I heard he did very well as a vice governor, as well as at being a representative during his first two terms.  I recall several of my professors ranting on and on about how good he is and how a lot of roads â€" both metaphorically and literally â€" have been paved now that he’s taken hold of the district megaphone in congress.  Needless, I should say, to mention the countless this-and-that programs he held all over his sphere.  The decision to provide leverage for Chatto was, to say, not at all premeditated.  It was influenced by my mom and my association with his daughter.  It was something I had set my time and mind to merely because I knew I had made a choice that my family and most of my friends would approve of.

Initially, it was safe to say I was biased towards Chatto because I allowed myself to sway in the direction of my most prevalent influences without giving it thought.

However, as a thinking citizen, I considered Victor de la Serna’s sentiments despite having been advised against the idea.  After all, he had his own track record.  And the fact that he got disbarred as an international lawyer was forgivable in my opinion.  But alas, Trisha was happy to know that I came to see Victor for what he truly was:  nothing more than just another washed-up has-been trying to return to the glory days.  He needed to be buried and that was a task I was more than glad to oblige to.

Yes, Edgar Chatto emerged victorious after days and days of letter campaign and wearing my sandals out walking under the scorching sun giving out the material I had just rolled out of the mimeo.  I never found a single reason to regret even a second of my time spent for that.  From the very beginning, I knew he deserved to win and when he did: he delivered what he knew the people needed and he didn’t disappoint.  And unlike most politicians who only favor those who favor them, this big guy was different.  He did not seem to acknowledge the votes when he helped people.  When he helped people, it was like he didn’t even know he was doing something extraordinary.  This was clearly something that came natural to him.

When I bore witness to the magnitude of his deeds, I was happy to have chosen such bias.  I couldn’t have been more thankful that my influences funneled me in that direction.

Now, I haven’t much to say about his adversaries.  The current vice-governor, Julius Herrera, is one to consider.  But has he really done something significant to merit him an honor parallel to Chatto’s?  I know not much of his track record as Bohol’s second-in-command.  All I know is that it wasn’t bad.  But I’ve never heard of it being exemplary.  Has he impacted lives?  Has he engraved his name in someone’s heart?  Is his face currently being smiled at in the mind of someone who doesn’t even know him?  I know Chatto’s is.

I have nothing to say about Cesar Montano except that he’s an actor who needs to stick to the stuff he knows how to do.  What a joke!  He couldn’t even take care of his own son.  Much less the whole province!  Am I using his son’s death against him?  Yes I am!  We all have free will!  And why shouldn’t I talk about his son’s death?  The fact that he failed to see his own child’s well-being is a clear manifestation of his incapability to lead.

HATE ON ME ALL YOU WANT!  I KNOW I'M RIGHT!

thanks for reminding me about this aspect of our politics in the philippines - the role of fraternities. now tell me what is the similarity between herrera and these three politicians - danao mayor gonzaga, vice-presidentiable binay and senatoriable bello? yep, they belong to the same fraternity. and did you notice that they belong to different political parties. (fraternity) blood is thicker than (political party) water? your guess is as good as mine as to whether these three politicians will figure in herrera's campaign :)

bitaw bai arki, montano is a dark horse. i sincerely hope he will win para mahilum ning duha. what they are doing to each other is to cancel each other out of the competition. montano is right not to get in the middle of it as he will be the recipient of the fall out between the two leading candidates. i am following montano's campaign through his facebook account and i like what i see in the pics.

MANILA, Philippinesâ€"Filipino temporary migrant workers tend to be younger and better educated than their domestic counterparts, a study by the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) said.

They also tend to be women, said the study of PIDS senior research fellow Dr. Aniceto Orbeta Jr. and research analyst Michael Ralph Abrigo entitled, Philippine International Labor Migration in the Past 30 Years: Trends and Prospects.

“Around seven of every ten temporary migrant workers are of ages between 24 to 44 years old and half of them have at least some tertiary education...with majority of temporary migrant workers being women,” the study said.

The last 30 years saw international labor migration shape Philippine society and economy, and many see it as an enduring feature of Philippine development.

The study said that the drivers and prospects both in the local economy and in the major destination countries will define the future of migration streams in the country.

The number of Filipinos leaving the country for work shot up from around 36,000 workers in 1975 up to more than 1.2 million in 2007, it noted.

“The Middle East is the primary destination of land-based temporary migrants followed by Asia, particularly the newly industrialized countries which turned to labor importation to sustain their economic growth,” the study said.

Over the past 30 years, professionals (architects, engineers, health professionals, composers, and performing artists) dominated international labor migration in 1975, but were replaced by production process workers, transport workers, and laborers in the 1980s; this coincided with the construction boom in the Middle East.

“Unlike temporary workers who are mostly professionals and service workers (maids and housekeepers), the larger proportion of permanent migrants are unemployedâ€"housewives, students, and minorsâ€"dependents of professionals who emigrated because of more career advancement opportunities, over and above the differences in wages,” it said.

The situation with permanent migrants is principally defined by the United States, the primary destination of Filipino migrants.

“Permanent migrants are highly educated which may reflect US immigration policy “’o admit workers with skills needed by the economy.’ In terms of age, however, the 44 years old and above age category comprises the largest group, reflecting the preference of employers in hiring more experienced workers, in addition to the family reunification program in the US,” the study said.

Other destinations of Filipino permanent migrants are countries in Asia, Oceania, and Europe.

In the case of irregular migrants, a large proportion is likewise in North America but this “is already declining from 37 percent in 1997 to 28 percent in 2007. However, there is an increasing number of irregular migrants in East Asia, comprising around 30 percent of the total number of irregular migrants in 2007. Other regions with irregular migrants are Europe and the Middle East, representing 9 and 10 percent of all irregular migrants, respectively, in 2007,” the study said.

He is not Ancog, he was mentioned here from the old thread.Morag Olaivar taga Dauis siya.
Thanks for mentioning Monsanto, this profit oriented multinational based in St Louis is responsible for creating toxic chemicals (Agent Orange, PCB)  and genetically manipulated crops like corn, soja and rice.
The farmers here in Germany are not ready to plant gen-manipulated corn since the long-term outcome is unknown. There are questions still unanswered like, will this crop affects human dna upon consumption? will the pollen from the crops affects insects like bees and weeds growing along the crop? It will take long years to have the answer and if the effects are detrimental, it is too late to rectify the error.

if you meant Olaivar, the militant farmer activist, yes he was gunned down by unknown assailants reportedly linked to the military. but Boy Ancog is fighting against GMO and not Olaivar; on the other hand, maybe he is because of his leadership of small farmers but Ancog is the more prominent on GM foods, i think. Olaivar was murdered reportedly due to his leftist connections.

the pro of course, is increased production of food to meet up the increasing demand of the world population.

there is a need to balance this out. but its not as simple to explain in a few lines, im afraid.

i'll try, chicogon.

GMO stands for genetically-modified organism. using rice as an example, a gene from say, another plant that makes it withstand certain type of plant disease is added into the rice's gene. an analogy is kung imong kasingkasing pulihan sa kasing2 sa manok pananglitan :) mao gi-describe nila ni ug franken-rice kay di pa sigurado ang proseso basin mahimo unyang monster. ang risk ani nga process is still not well understood.

another argument against this is the patent to the GMO is owned by the big multinational corporation like Monsanto, Bayer ug kaning Syngenta nga nag-promote ug GMO rice. Ang resulta, ato ta palit nila ug seeds unya perting mahala. also, naa poy sideline nga palit ug pesticide nila. so, for a third world farmer that is not good.

Is this a genetically manipulated rice? This is not a solution. Please don´t forget that a farmer activist from Dauis died because he was against gen-manipulated rice to be planted in Bohol.

yes, it is. the farmer activist you refer to, Boy Ancog is still alive (refer to this link http://www.searice.org.ph/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=125:farmer-ends-hunger-strike-exposes-pro-gmo-agenda-of-fao-meeting&catid=2:Genetic%20Engineering%20in%20Agriculture%20and%20Food&Itemid=6)

i agree that GMO is not an answer especially to third world countries. bohol is declared GMO-free but still we need to be vigilant.

mao man jud niy biggest criticism agains noynoy, ang iyang parents. with national heroes as parents why should i not be proud, kung ako pa na. this year's election is all about trust and who can you trust more among the candidates? 40% trust noynoy.

true, leadership is not born but it will help and just cant be disregarded. look at sukarnoputri, daughter of sukarno of indonesia. and how about aung sang suu kyi? shes the daughter of the burma's national hero. they make a big difference in their own country and the people chose them partly because of their revered parents. there is something different about this people. they dont live normal lives like we do.

its so easy for us to make this as if it is their fault. but do they have a choice? they do but that would be great disprespect for their parents. would you do that to your revered parents if that was you in noynoy's case?

as of today, declare na ang iglesia ni cristo nga ang ilang dapigan is aquino-roxas.  based on their own surveys, this is the tandem that's winning.  they always go for the winner, whom they inform about their choice and from whom they ask for concessions.  unsa man ni, adobe photoshoppe pod sila, kalamaydebohol?  (i just want your opinion.)

agree, kalimot siguro si kalamay (sige man gud suroy sa pantalan baligya sa ijang bagol) nga 60% of the filipinos clamoured for noynoy to run and for sure you just cant disregard that. and now, 40% will vote him this election. those against him would spin this negatively that 60% will not vote for him but how bout this, 91% of the filipinos will not vote for noynoy's cousin either.

Database of history of each Bohol town is scarce. What is found in the Internet and even in government records is a 2- or 3-sentence "snapshot" of our towns.

We need more Boholanos like Olintaha who can invite us to take a closer look at our town roots.

i agree; i seem to recall reading a book by the late simplicio apalisok from which i learned a lot (though briefly) about the history of the towns of bohol.

i also remember a volunteer project on local history which was done by UP; i read about a local history on jagna by a UP student from jagna. alas, i only read it in UP diliman once when i visited an office there.

i've made a quick research on the laws this acts violated. beware though that i'm not a lawyer so i am not an authority on this.

it is possible that RA 3571 is violated. this is 'an act to prohibit the cutting, destroying or injuring of planted or growing trees, flowering plants and shrubs or plants of scenic value along public roads, in plazas, parks, school premises or in any other public ground.'

it is also possible that PD 953 is violated. this decree is 'requiring the planting of trees in certain places and penalizing unauthorized cutting, destruction, damaging and injuring or certain trees, plants and vegetation.'

here is a 2008 incident which used PD 953 in running after a government official for illegal cutting of old trees in a park http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/breakingnews/metro/view/20080906-159101/Intramuros-head-not-yet-off-hook--environment-chief

re kaayohan's rant, all i can say it is it is better late than never.

for me, the petition's objective is two-fold, one is to get some action now for the wrong that's done, and second, is to let those who plan to copy it know that they can not just go away with it without a fight from those who care for our natural heritage.

The trees are gone, but this initiative will haunt those persons responsible for cutting them and for sure there are still existing tall old trees in our province. This is a lesson to learn.

this is precisely what i had in mind. this is for those who plan to do the same thing in the future in other places in our province with the same utter disregard, if indeed true. i still have to read the petition before i put my name in.

Hilabihan ka sayang labina nga ang atong Mayor nagdugay sa amerika. she should have known better.

diri sa UK naay ancient woodland database. tanang mga karaang kahoy (100+ years) had been inventoried and afforded protected status nationally. dili ka basta-basta ka putol ug kahoy you have to go through a long process through several government agencies.

im sure there is something similar diha sa pinas ang kapait lang kay pag-implementar lagi sa balaod. ug usa pa, ang atong individual values towards our environment morag kinahanglan usbon. sugdan sa mga lokal nga opisyales nga nagtuo nga they have blanket powers to do what they want.

ang ako lang pangutana, kay human na man ni what has been done afterwards? di na man ni ma-restore diha-diha dayon. this can be a good election issue for the incumbent's opponent.

Seguro I was confused with the civil and public. I am not elected but I was appointed to a certain position, but maybe civil servant is more fitting to describe.

When people ask me what am doing in the US, I always say I work in the government, so walay nay category.

that's how i understand it ha dont take my word for it :)

bitaw, ako pud ako ingnon dayon naa sa gobyerno

i dont believe it, Jig. a good leader always have some good members, but the kind of attitudes they're showing here, it only tells me what kind of person  their candidate is. It is a turn off.

Im not changing my vote.

you're right of course, basin ug na-degenerate na ang leadership qualities sa kadugay na sa pwesto maong kinahanglan na jud ug kausaban pud sa bohol. i, too, will not change my vote and that's that.

I work in the government, public servant? That is appropriate I guess.

elected official diay ka wolf kay public servant man ka.

civil servants like me are those who are employed by the government. wa na pud ma-uso diri ang security of tenure labi na karon panahona nga nag-recover pa sa recession. public sector cuts is a big election issue during this election campaign diri sa UK

did you know, ang casual diri gi-tawag ug fixed term appointment (FTA). i started out as one for a year then got a permanent appointment afterwards. unlike casual sa ato-a it's not linked to any padrino.
