Book Reviews / "The Way of the Shepherd"
June 28, 2007, 08:27:25 AM
"The Way of the Shepherd" by Dr. Kevin Leman and William Pentak is about the 7 ancient secrets to managing productive people.

A required reading for executives and middle managers of the Provincial Government of Bohol, the principles of the way of the shepherd are:

1. Know the Condition of Your Flock
- Follow the status of your people as well as the status of the work
- Get to know your flock, one sheep at a time
- Engage your people on a regular basis
- Keep your eyes and ears open, question, and follow through

2. Discover the Shape of Your Sheep
- Your choice of sheep can make flock management easier or harder
- Start with healthy sheep, or you'll inherit someone else's problems
- Know the SHAPE of your sheep to make sure they are in the right fold

3. Help Your Sheep Identify with You
- Build trust with your followers by modeling authenticity, integrity, and compassion
- Set high standards of performance
- Relentlessly communicate your values and sense of mission
- Define the cause for your people and tell them where they fit in
- Remember that great leadership isn't just professional; it's personal

4. Make Your Pasture a Safe Place
- Keep you people well informed
- Infuse every position with importance
- Cull chronic instigators from the flock
- Regularly rotate the sheep to fresh pastures
- Reassure the sheep by staying visible
- Don't give problems time to fester

5. The Staff of Direction
- Know where you're going, get out in front, and keep your flock on the move
- When directing, use persuasion rather than coercion
- Give your peoplew freedom of movement, but make sure they know where the fence line is. Don't confuse boundaries with bridles.
- When your people get in trouble, go and get them out.
- Remind your people that failure isn't fatal.

6. The Rod of Correction
- Protect: Stand in the gap and fight for your sheep.
- Correct: Approach discipline as a teaching opportunity.
- Inspect: Regularly inquire about your people's progress.

7. The Heart of the Shepherd
- Great leadership is a lifestyle, not a technique.
- Every day you have to decide who's going to pay for your leadership-you or your people.
- Most of all, have a heart for your sheep.

An icon of the student paper for almost 50 years, Dr. Bernardita Castillo Cortes, was honored last night, June 26, by the staff and past editors of The Varsitarian as she retired from the academe.

Ma'am Bern, ever since anyone could remember, served as English consultant and then as Technical consultant of The Varsitarian, the official student publication of the University of Bohol.

A fierce defender of the publication's autonomy and independence, she has endeared herself to the "Varsians" both then and now whom she helped mold to become what they are today.

Ma'am Bern started as Literary editor of the Rafael Palma Collegian (the precursor of the Varsitarian when UB was then known as Rafael Palma College), circa 1960s, with Erico B. Aumentado (who later became Bohol Governor) then as chief editor. At that time, her fellow Varsi staff included Board Member Dionisio Balite and City Councilor & Past PCL Pres. Urbano Lagunay.

Past editors-in-chief of the student paper who gave tribute to Ma'am Bern with their testimonial and presence were Judge Jorge Cabalit, Atty. Handel Lagunay, Ediliza Macalandag and Kit Bagaipo. Paul Vistal, past editor-in-chief of The Word, official student publication of Holy Name University (formerly Divine Word College), was also in attendance. Ma'am Bern's cousins, Carmen Mae and Gloria Castillo were the surprise guests for the honoree.

Escorted by her husband, Boy, Ma'am Bern gave her response recounting the challenges the paper has went through and overcame all the years and expressed confidence that the Varistarian will continue to be in good hands with her chosen successor, Mrs. Emilita Cresencio-Lim (BS MassCom, Silliman University, 1981).

Ma'am Bern's two sons, Jasper and Cromwell, are working in Thailand. Jasper was also a past editor-in-chief of the Varsitarian and a prolific and profound writer just like his mom.

When I was a boy scout, we were taught how to make a barbequed egg. It was tricky but I was able to do this successfully.

However, this does not answer the question about making a perfect sunny-side up egg.

Here's an oracion I learned from my Mamay Isang when I was a child (my yaya, who was my mother's yaya before me, became the yaya of my children, and the yaya of my lola) which we recite when there is a power outage at night:

Gloria panit
Espiritu pangunit
Ungo pahawa
Ayaw hilabti ang mga bata.

Got that, yadz26. It was you who posted/started it.  :)

Mike, I'm not sure I have Luke's photographs in his elementary or high school days. I have dig through the old photo albums at my parents house.

I noticed the prominent bar announcing our high school reunion. Thanks a lot, mike!

Showbiz & Celebrity / Luke Mejares

Was it mfrandsen or lumine who talked about Luke Mejares? I would have posted this as a reply to the discussion but I couldnot track where it is anymore so I started this as a new topic.
Let me share some thoughts on Luke...
I knew him since he was about 7 years old. Back then we call him Mike... as in Michael. His full first name is Michael Luke.
When he became a professional singer, he dropped Michael -- I think to distinguish himself from other showbiz personalities like Michael V and others.
I am about 3 or 4 years his senior but we were in the drum and bugle corp together.  We went to the same school (UB) since elementary until he graduated high school.
Living in the same village with Luke, and being brothers in the fraternity, I am so proud and happy of his achievements. I wish him and his family all the best and God speed!

Congratulations to Kit O!  Tagbilaran City council is lucky to have her. Her experience and training while she was Chief of Staff of Vice Gov. Herrera will be put to good use for the good of Tagbilaran.
Cheers, Kit O!

Recently in Tagbilaran's radio programs, concerned individuals (including those who lost in the election) were discussing how candidates won by vote buying. Some callers (including one who won) said there's no use harping on the subject at this time and it's time to "move on".

Our society has a choice: either to sweep this issue under the carpet and wait until they are pulled out once again next election, or, start the ardous, overwhelming, painful task of reorienting the values of our voters now.

The first choice will contribute to the decline of the quality of our electors and elected officials. The second seems like an impossible dream.

Either our society will go with the flow and accept this as the next stage in the evolution of the "development" of our electoral process, or, our society will recognize it for what it really is and do its part part to prevent it from further spreading into the value system of the younger generation.

Many competent candidates who could not compete against their opponents' "buying" power lost in the election. Individuals who could make a difference in public service are finding it harder and harder to get into an elected position. This is a shame on our political system because we could not put in office the "best and the brightest" unless he/she has the money and is willing to spend (read "buy votes").
