Inspiration & Hope / Never Do These 8 Things in Life
October 19, 2023, 08:14:13 AM
Never Do These 8 Things in Life.

1. Never play with someone's feelings just for your happiness. You may win the game, but the risk is that you will surely lose the person for a lifetime.

2. Never stop to make yourself better. No matter what you know, the minute you stop building yourself, you begin to deteriorate.

3. Never think that you are not good enough. In life, people will take you for what or how you present yourself.

4. Never lose hope in life. To hope, is to breathe life, to free your mind from fear and pessimism and fill it with optimism and positive thinking. So, no matter how difficult your life gets, never deprive yourself of hope.

5. Never lose your self-respect. Self-respect is a form of self-care.

6. Never beg for opportunities. Snatch them. When you beg for opportunities (including jobs), you will be seen as inexperienced and of low value. It is much better to have confidence in the value you have to offer than to beg.

7. Never take anyone or anything in life for granted. Taking things for granted is considered irresponsible, even damaging. Taking your spouse for granted is a surefire way to make them feel unloved. Taking your income for granted can put you at financial risk if you lose your job. Taking your health for granted can lead you to take poor care of yourself.

8. Even if the world takes advantage of you, never let the good in you d!e

1984 is a novel by George Orwell that was published in 1949. It is a dystopian story that depicts a totalitarian society ruled by the Party, which controls every aspect of people's lives through propaganda, surveillance, censorship, and torture. The novel follows the life of Winston Smith, a low-ranking member of the Party who works in the Ministry of Truth, where he alters historical records to suit the Party's agenda. Winston secretly hates the Party and dreams of rebelling against it, but he is constantly watched by the telescreens and the Thought Police, who can detect any sign of disloyalty or dissent. Winston meets Julia, a young woman who also hates the Party, and they begin a clandestine affair in a rented room above a prole shop. They believe that they are part of a secret underground resistance movement called the Brotherhood, led by Emmanuel Goldstein, the enemy of the Party. However, they are eventually betrayed by O'Brien, a high-ranking member of the Party who pretends to be a rebel. Winston and Julia are captured, tortured, and brainwashed in the Ministry of Love, where they are forced to confess their crimes and betray each other. Winston is taken to Room 101, where he is confronted with his worst fear: rats. He begs O'Brien to do it to Julia instead, thus demonstrating his complete submission to the Party. The novel ends with Winston sitting in a cafe, drinking gin and accepting the Party's lies as truth. He loves Big Brother.

Some of the lessons that can be learned from 1984 are:

- The importance of freedom of thought, speech, and expression. The novel shows how the Party manipulates language, history, and reality to control people's minds and prevent them from questioning or challenging its authority. The novel warns against the dangers of totalitarianism and censorship, and encourages readers to value their individuality and creativity.
- The power of propaganda and psychological manipulation. The novel illustrates how the Party uses various techniques such as slogans, doublethink, newspeak, and hate week to indoctrinate people and make them loyal to Big Brother. The novel also shows how the Party exploits people's emotions such as fear, hatred, and love to manipulate them and make them conform to its ideology.
- The role of resistance and rebellion in oppressive societies. The novel portrays Winston and Julia as rebels who try to defy the Party and seek some form of personal happiness and freedom. The novel also introduces the Brotherhood as a possible source of hope and change for the oppressed masses. However, the novel also reveals the futility and danger of rebellion in a society where the Party has absolute power and can crush any opposition. The novel suggests that resistance is possible but not easy or effective in such circumstances.

Book Reviews / Lessons in Robinson Crusoe Novel
October 19, 2023, 05:23:29 AM
"Robinson Crusoe" is a novel written by Daniel Defoe and published in 1719. It is often considered one of the first novels in the English language. The story revolves around the adventures of Robinson Crusoe, a mariner who is shipwrecked on a deserted island, where he spends 28 years. Here are some key themes and interpretations of the novel:

1. Survival and Self-Reliance: One of the central themes of the novel is the human instinct for survival. Crusoe's resourcefulness and ability to adapt to his surroundings are emblematic of the human capacity to overcome adversity through self-reliance.

2. Colonialism and Imperialism: "Robinson Crusoe" also reflects the colonial and imperialist attitudes of the time. Crusoe's dominance over the island and his relationship with Friday, a native he rescues and converts to Christianity, can be seen as symbolic of colonialism and its impact on indigenous cultures.

3. Religious Themes: Religion plays a significant role in the novel. Crusoe's journey from a reckless young man to a devout Christian reflects the idea of spiritual redemption and the importance of faith in the face of isolation.

4. Isolation and Loneliness: The novel explores the psychological and emotional effects of long-term isolation. Crusoe's struggle with loneliness and his attempts to create a life for himself on the island provide insight into the human need for companionship.

5. Enlightenment and Individualism: Crusoe's quest for knowledge and self-improvement while on the island can be interpreted as a reflection of the Enlightenment ideals of individualism and self-education.

6. Adventure and Exploration: The novel captures the spirit of adventure and exploration that was prevalent during the Age of Discovery, as Crusoe's experiences on the island are filled with exploration, discovery, and danger.

"Robinson Crusoe" has been the subject of various interpretations and adaptations over the years and continues to be a classic in literature that raises important questions about human nature, society, and the individual's place in the world.

History / Re: Circus Maximus
October 18, 2023, 12:50:51 PM
The Circus Maximus continued to host chariot races and other events until the 6th century AD, even when Rome was on the verge of collapse. The last race to be held at the Circus Maximus was in 549 AD, during the reign of the Ostrogothic king Totila. ⁴ After that, the stadium started to decay and was used as a quarry for building materials. Some of its marble and stones were stolen and used to construct new buildings in the area. The Circus Maximus became a forgotten place, and was later used as a market garden and a dumping ground.

History / Re: Circus Maximus
October 18, 2023, 12:50:13 PM
The Circus Maximus was a huge place in ancient Rome where people could watch different kinds of shows and games. The main purpose of the Circus Maximus was to host chariot races, which were very popular and exciting for the Romans. Chariot races were part of the religious festivals called ludi, which honored different gods and goddesses. The Circus Maximus was also used for other events, such as hunting animals, fighting gladiators, or celebrating festivals.

The Circus Maximus was very old and was first built by the kings of Rome. It was changed and improved many times by different emperors. It could fit more than 150,000 people and had a long and wide track with a barrier in the middle. The chariots had different colors and were pulled by teams of horses. They had to race seven laps around the track and avoid crashing into each other or the turning posts. The winners were rewarded with money and fame. ¹²³⁴⁵

The Circus Maximus was the largest and most famous circus in Rome and its empire. It was a place where people could enjoy entertainment, socialize, and celebrate their culture and religion. It was also a place where politics and power were displayed and challenged. The Circus Maximus was an important part of Roman life for centuries until it stopped hosting shows in the 6th century AD. ¹²³⁴⁵

The cost of Starlink direct to cell internet data depends on the type of plan you want and how much data you need. Here are some examples of the plans and prices available in the Philippines:

- Standard: This is the basic plan for residential customers at one location. It costs Php 2,700 / month and includes unlimited data and a speed of up to 150 Mbps. You need to pay Php 29,500 for the hardware, which includes a Starlink dish, a router, and a tripod.

- Mobile - Regional: This is the plan for customers who want to use Starlink at any location on land in their continent with best effort service. It costs Php 3,300 / month and includes unlimited data and a speed of up to 100 Mbps. You can pause and un-pause the service at any time. You need to pay Php 29,500 for the hardware, which is the same as the Standard plan.

- Mobile - Global: This is the plan for customers who want to use Starlink at any location on land across the globe with active service coverage. It costs Php 12,200 / month and includes unlimited data and a speed of up to 50 Mbps. You can pause and un-pause the service at any time. However, this plan is deprioritized behind Standard and Priority customers and can result in slower speeds during times of peak usage. You also need to pay Php 29,500 for the hardware.

- Mobile - Priority: This is the plan for customers who want to use Starlink on the ocean or land across the globe with network priority and faster speeds. It costs Php 15,394 / month for 50 GB of Mobile Priority data, Php 61,576 / month for 1 TB of Mobile Priority data, or **Php 307,885 / month** for 5 TB of Mobile Priority data. After using Mobile Priority data, you can continue receiving unlimited Mobile data on land anywhere Starlink has service globally. This plan also supports in motion use with approved hardware. However, by switching to this plan, you may not be able to change back to a fixed plan at your address. You also need to pay **Php 122,000** for the hardware, which includes a Starlink dish, a router, a tripod, and a motion stabilizer.

Sagad silang magtinagurha lamang, magtinagup-at kun mokapin man apan dili ingon niini karon kadas-ag. Diin sila gikan ug asa paingon?

"Sumala god, kapila mo ako dagyawi nga way kaping kabubut-on?

Amen."

Nagpaabot. Kadugay man? Unsay gilanganan? Nag-irog ang mga gutlo ug siya nasagmuyo. Nahasol na hinuon siya karon. Natahap ug gibatig kahadlok.

"The father must celebrate. It's now a boy, Almario."

Almario Robio Medalla - Naminyo kang Cristina Solar Rojo, Hunyo 12, 1912

"Nagkasakit sila, Sebyo?"

"Wala baya, Sir."

"Unya, nganong iuli mo man? Manok kining angay pasanayon. Pila lang kaninyo ang nakabaton nga makasemilya."

"Gianugnan bitaw ko, Sir."

"Kon mao, nganong iuli mo man?"

"Way maayong moabot, Sir."

"Nardo, Lilay, nia man diay mo?"

"Naatol sab nga pista kining among pagduaw."

"May payong man.

How To Tips / Compute Income Tax in the Philippines
October 17, 2023, 11:41:47 PM
This message is awaiting approval by a moderator.
To compute your net salary after tax, SSS, Philhealth and Pag-ibig, you need to follow these steps:

1. Find your taxable income by deducting your monthly contributions to SSS, Philhealth and Pag-ibig from your monthly salary. According to the web search results¹⁷, the monthly contributions for a salary of 200,000 pesos are:

    - SSS: 2,400 pesos
    - Philhealth: 1,100 pesos
    - Pag-ibig: 100 pesos

The total deductions are 3,600 pesos. Therefore, your taxable income is 200,000 - 3,600 = 196,400 pesos.

2. Look into the income tax table and determine your tax bracket and rate. According to the web search results¹²³⁴, the income tax table for 2023 is:

    | Taxable Income Bracket | Tax Rate |
    | ---------------------- | -------- |
    | Up to 250,000 pesos   | 0%       |
    | Over 250,000 to 400,000 pesos | 15% of the excess over 250,000 pesos |
    | Over 400,000 to 800,000 pesos | 22,500 + 20% of the excess over 400,000 pesos |
    | Over 800,000 to 2 million pesos | 102,500 + 25% of the excess over 800,000 pesos |
    | Over 2 million to 8 million pesos | 402,500 + 30% of the excess over 2 million pesos |
    | Over 8 million pesos   | 2.2025 million + 35% of the excess over 8 million pesos |

Since your taxable income is 196,400 pesos, you fall into the first bracket and your tax rate is zero.

3. Compute your income tax by multiplying your taxable income by your tax rate. In your case, your income tax is zero.

4. Subtract your income tax from your taxable income to get your net salary after tax. In your case, your net salary after tax is the same as your taxable income, which is 196,400 pesos.

Therefore, your net salary after tax, SSS, Philhealth and Pag-ibig is **196,400 pesos**.

Pres. Biden and the DNC raised more than $71 million for his reelection campaign from July through September — a strong indication that party donors remain united behind him in the 2024 race.

Biden's total has not topped the tally of the last Democratic president, Barack Obama, who raised $85.6 million with Democratic entities during the April-to-June quarter in 2011 when he launched his campaign for a second term. Obama did announce his candidacy three weeks earlier that April than Biden did in 2023. https://abcnews.visitlink.me/_eHYv8

On October 15, 1978, Dr. Gregorio Zara died. Among his better known works include the "videophone" which he demonstrated in 1954 and patented the next year as "photo phone signal separator network." Making use of this, the Filipino scientist's creation allowed people to talk and view each other at the same time, a two-way television-based phone, predating the 1956 development of related technology by the American Bell Labs called the "picturephone." Notably, development of videotelephony has been ongoing elsewhere since the 1920s.

Other Zara patents would be a solar-powered water heater, an induction compass for pilots, and an airplane engine that runs on alcohol fuel. He also contributed in robotics, helping in the development of the walking Marex X-10.

In the realm of physics, he developed in 1930 a concept on electrical kinetic resistance. It was in the same year he finished his doctorate in physics at Sorbonne. He obtained his bachelor's degree on mechanical engineering just four years earlier, in 1926, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) through a scholarship grant.

His government service featured his technical expertise as he worked in the Department of Public Works and Communications, as well as the Department of Defense. He also shared his knowledge through teaching, becoming a professor in the Far East Air Transport Incorporated University (FEATI) in 1946 and vice president of the institution until 1962. Along with Juan Salcedo, Jr. and Alfredo Santos, Zara became one of the first National Scientists of the Philippines, awarded in 1978.

Zara was born in Batangas on March 8, 1902. Learn more about science in the Philippines: https://history-ph.blogspot.com/2022/01/october-events.html

Family & Parenting / 10 Best Financial Advice
October 15, 2023, 05:05:37 PM
10 BEST FINANCIAL ADVICE

1. Don't buy an expensive phone. A new version will come out even before you've finished paying for it.

2. Don't buy an expensive bag. Replicas are scattered everywhere. Only a trained eye will see that it's genuine.

3. Don't buy expensive shoes. You can't walk like a duck trying to keep it from deforming with every use.

4. Don't buy expensive clothing. You can't walk around showing the small tag behind your nape.

5. Don't buy an expensive watch. A 100-peso vintage watch online looks good too, and all kinds will tell the same time.

6. Don't buy expensive undergarments.
It's not allowed to walk in public wearing only a Victoria's Secret bra and panties.

7. Don't buy expensive cars. It depreciates with every kilometer it runs. Your 1.2 Million-Peso SUV will sell for only 500K.

8. Don't buy a huge house. Too much space creates distance between family members. They'll grow old and leave anyway.

9. Always settle for the justified price. You can do more with two for the price of one.

10. Remember that it's not the brand that carries you. It's how you carry the brand.

Grow old and be wise.
Learn How to Save and Invest.

Philippine History / San Fernando, La Union in History
October 15, 2023, 05:00:40 PM
A portraits of Gaspar Flores, chief executives (1901-1903),
Municipal officials and employees
San Fernando, La Union
Dated: 1890/1907

Photographs of Philippine Island
University of Michigan. Special Collections Library

San Fernando was founded in 1786 and was named after Saint Ferdinand III of Castile. The city's original settlements, San Vicente de Balanac and San Guillermo de Dalangdang, were attacked by pirates and headhunters.

In 1759, Augustinian friar, Padre José Torres fused these 2 settlements to Pindangan (local word for dry fish), where a church dedicated to San Guillermo the Hermit was. This church is now the Cathedral of St. William the Hermit. The massive 1860's earthquake destroyed the church which was later rebuilt.

It became the cabecera or provincial capital of La Union province in 1850.

From 1896 until 1898, during the Philippine Revolution, the Spanish garrison of San Fernando was attacked by Filipino insurgents under Manuel Tinio y Bundoc and Mauro Ortiz. The Spaniards were finally ousted.

In the Second World War, the last battle of San Fernando was fought during the Japanese occupation at Barangay Bacsil. The Bacsil Ridge Monument was built on the site in the city, the north-eastern portion of the town plaza. The victory ebabled the establishment of the United States Army Base, Base M at Poro Point (a buildup area for the Japan ivasion). The town was liberated in 1945.

San Fernando, officially the City of San Fernando (Ilocano: Ciudad ti San Fernando; Pangasinan: Ciudad na San Fernando; Filipino: Lungsod ng San Fernando) and often referred to as San Fernando City, is a third-class component city and capital of the province of La Union in the Philippines. According to the 2010 Philippine census, it has a population of 114,963 people.

The city is bounded by San Juan to the north, Bauang to the south, Bagulin and Naguilian to the east, and the South China Sea to the west. It has a land area of 10,272 hectares (25,380 acres).

San Fernando is the financial, industrial and political center of the province, as well as the center of the official Ilocos Region, or Region I in the regions of the Philippines. (Informally Ilocos includes those areas that speak the Ilocano language outside of the official Ilocos Region.)

San Fernando became a city by virtue of R.A. 8509 signed into law on February 13, 1998 and ratified on March 20, 1998 by a plebiscite.

Philippine Education / Success Story from Loon, Bohol

BOHOLANO PROVES ONCE MORE THAT HARD WORK CAN MAKE YOUNG PEOPLE WIN IN LIFE!

Within a span of two years in his course, Ephraen Novecio made the big leap from ALS in Bohol to Electromechanics graduate. He started with common hurdles: looking for a good but affordable school, and then struggling with Filipino dialect. But his hard work paid off as he eventually made it as a trainee at Asia Brewery Incorporated.

Recently, he said in his speech for his graduation that "mahiyain ako at hindi sanay na magsalita sa maraming tao (I am shy and I am not used to speaking before many people)". Just the same, he took time to explain that studying in Dualtech has been the "biggest opportunity" of his life, an opportunity that waits for more deserving young people like Ephraen who is also a scholar of the Rotary Club of Manila.

Sports and Fitness / Vanessa Sarno
October 13, 2023, 10:31:13 PM
Vanessa Sarno is a Boholana weightlifter who competed in the women's 76 kg category at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China in October 2023. She finished fifth in her event, lifting a total of 230 kg, with 100 kg in the snatch and 130 kg in the clean and jerk. She was 15 kg behind the bronze medalist, Uzbekistan's Kumushkhon Fayzullaeva, who lifted 245 kg. The gold medal went to China's Zhang Wangli, who set a new Asian Games record with 280 kg.

Sarno's performance was remarkable considering that she had just recovered from a serious illness that hospitalized her in India in August 2023. She was competing in the 2023 Asian Senior and Junior Championships in New Delhi, where she won three gold medals in the junior division and two silver medals in the senior division. However, she contracted a high fever and was admitted to the intensive care unit of a hospital. Sarno said that she was grateful for the support of her family, coaches, and fellow weightlifters during her ordeal. She also thanked the Philippine Sports Commission and the Philippine Olympic Committee for providing her with medical assistance and financial aid.

Sarno is one of the rising stars of Philippine weightlifting, having won several medals in regional and international tournaments since she started competing at age 12. She is also a student at the University of Bohol, where she is taking up Bachelor of Science in Physical Education. She said that she was proud to represent the Philippines in the Asian Games and that she would continue to train hard for future competitions. She also expressed her admiration for her idol and mentor, Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz, who also competed in the same event and finished fourth with 233 kg.

There are different ways to remove a watermark on a Microsoft Word document, depending on how the watermark was added. Here are some methods you can try:

- If the watermark was added using the Watermark menu, you can remove it by going to **Design > Watermark > Remove Watermark**⁴. This will delete the watermark from your entire document³.
- If the watermark was added as part of the header or footer, you can remove it by editing the header or footer area. To do this, go to **Insert > Header > Edit Header**⁴. Then, click on the watermark to select it and press the **Delete** key on your keyboard⁶. You may need to repeat this for each section of your document if you have multiple headers or footers³.
- If the watermark is an image or a text box that is behind the text, you can remove it by selecting the **Home** tab and clicking on **Select > Select Objects**. Then, drag your mouse over the watermark to select it and press the **Delete** key on your keyboard⁴.

Facts and Trivia / Gaza Population
October 11, 2023, 01:34:42 AM
According to the latest estimates, the population of Gaza is about **2.3 million** people living in one of the most densely populated areas in the world. ²³⁴ The Gaza Strip is a Palestinian territory that borders Israel and Egypt on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea. ² It has a total area of **365 km 2 (141 sq mi)** and a length of **41 km (25 mi)**. ²

Most of the people in Gaza are Muslim, mostly Sunni, and there is a small Christian minority. ² Many of them are descendants of refugees who fled or were expelled from their homes during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War.  Gaza has been under Israeli military occupation since 1967 and has faced a land, sea and air blockade since 2007.   This has caused severe humanitarian and economic problems for the residents of Gaza, who suffer from poverty, unemployment, lack of basic services, and frequent violence.

Gaza has a very high population growth rate of **2.91%** (2014 est.), which is the 13th highest in the world. ¹ About **75%** of Gaza's population is under the age of 25. ² This means that Gaza faces many challenges and opportunities in the future, as its young population needs education, health care, jobs, and hope for a better life.

Inspiration & Hope / Advice to All Employees
October 10, 2023, 02:58:59 PM
ADVICE TO ALL EMPLOYEES

1. Build a home earlier. Be it rural home or urban home. Building a house at 50 is not an achievement. Don't get used to government houses. This comfort is so dangerous. Let all your family have good time in your house.

2. Go home. Don't stick at work all the year.  You are not the pillar of your department.  If you drop dead today, you will be replaced immediately and operations will continue.  Make your family a priority.

3. Don't chase promotions.  Master your skills and be excellent at what you do. If they want to promote you, that's fine if they don't,  stay positive to your personal.
development.

4. Avoid office or work gossip. Avoid things that tarnish your name or reputation. Don't join the bandwagon that backbites  your bosses and colleagues. Stay away from negative gatherings that have only people as their agenda.

5. Don't ever compete with your bosses.  You will burn your fingers.  Don't compete with your colleagues, you will fry your brain.

6. Ensure you have a side business.  Your salary will not sustain your needs in the long run.

7. Save some money. Let it be deducted automatically from your payslip.

8. Borrow a loan to invest in a business or to change a situation not to buy luxury. Buy luxury from your profit.

9. Keep your life, marriage and family private. Let them stay away from your work. This is very important.

10. Be loyal to yourself  and believe in your work. Hanging around your boss will alienate you from your colleagues and  your boss may finally dump you when he leaves.

11. Retire early.  The best way to plan for your exit was when you received the employment letter. The other best time is today.  By 40 to 50 be out.

12. Join work welfare and be an active member always. It will help you a lot when  any eventuality occurs.

13.Take leave days utilize them by developing yr future home or projects..usually what you do during yr leave days is a reflection of how you'll live after retirement..If it means you spend it all holding a remote control watching series on Zee world, expect nothing different after retirement.

14. Start a project whilst still serving or working. Let your project run whilst at work and if it doesn't do well, start another one till it's running viably. When your project is viably running then retire to manage your business. Most people or pensioners fail in life because they retire to start a project instead of retiring to run a project.

15. Pension money is not for starting a project or buy a stand or build a house but it's money for your upkeep or to maintain yourself in good health. Pension money is not for paying school fees or marrying a young wife but to look after yourself.

16. Always remember, when you retire never be a case study for living a miserable life after retirement but be a role model for colleagues to think of retiring too.

17. Don't retire just because you are finished or you are now a burden to the company and just wait for your day to die. Retire young or whilst energetic to enjoy waking up for a cup of coffee, enjoy the sun, receive money from your business, visit nice place that you missed and spend good time with family. Those who retire late, spend about 95% of their time at work than with their family and that's why they see it difficult to spend time with their family when they retire but end looking for another job till they die. If they don't get another job, they die early.

18. Retire at your house than at government accommodation so that when you retire you can easily fit into the society that raised you. It's not easy to adjust to live in a location after spending more years at company house or at government house.

19. Never let your employment benefits make you forget about your retirement. Employment benefits are just meant to make you relax, get finished whilst time is moving. Remember when you retire no one will call you boss if you don't have a viable business.

20. Don't hate to retire because one day you will retire either voluntarily or involuntarily.

Hope this will help you look at life positively

Prayer for Israel in time of war

El Maleh Rachamim
Compassionate God,
We pray
not to wipe out haters
but to banish hatred.
Not to destroy sinners
but to lessen sin.
Our prayers are not for a perfect world
but a better one
Where parents are not bereaved
by the savagery of sudden attacks
Or children orphaned
by blades glinting in a noonday sun.
Help us dear God,
to have the courage to remain strong,
to stand fast.
Spread Your light
on the dark hearts of the slayers
And Your comfort
to the bereaved hearts of families of the slain.
Let calm return Your city Jerusalem,
and to Israel, Your blessed land.
We grieve with those wounded
in body and spirit,
pray for the fortitude of our sisters and brothers,
and ask You to awaken the world to our struggle and help us bring peace.

-Rabbi David Wolpe #IStandWithIsrael #StandWithIsrael  Israel in the Philippines
