Among other stocks making big moves:

â€" Viacom surged $4.28, or 5.8 percent, to $78.64 after the media company said its income rose 20 percent in the latest quarter, boosted by affiliate fee revenue its cable TV channels and higher advertising revenue. Viacom also increased its stock buyback program to $20 billion from $10 billion.

â€" American International Group, the insurer that was bailed out by the government during the financial crisis, rose 94 cents, or 2 percent, to $48.01 after the company said late Thursday that its profit grew 17 percent in the second quarter. AIG also announced its first dividend since 2008, when it nearly collapsed, and said its board approved a $1 billion stock buyback plan.

Investors "are used to having stability in their bonds and volatility in their stocks," Florance said. "In the next 18 months it could be exactly the opposite, with stability in the stock market and volatility in the bond market."

In commodities trading, the price of oil fell 72 cents to $107.17 a barrel. Gold was flat at $1,311 an ounce.

The dollar fell against the euro and the Japanese yen.

Government bonds rose after the tepid jobs report. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note, which falls when the note's price increases, fell to 2.63 percent from 2.71 percent Thursday. Bonds were regaining some lost ground after a sell-off Thursday prompted by a collection of reports suggesting the economy is improving.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note is 1 percentage point higher than it was May 3, when it hit a low for the year of 1.63 percent.

Volatility is likely to increase in the bond market in coming months as the Federal Reserve begins to wind down its stimulus program, said Ron Florance, managing director of investment strategy for Wells Fargo Private Bank.

The S&P 500 was down two points, or 0.1 percent, to 1,705 as of 12:20 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 18 points, or 0.1 percent, to 15,609. The Nasdaq composite was flat at 3,676.

Energy stocks fell more than the rest of the market after Chevron became the latest big energy company to disappoint investors with lower earnings. Chevron's profit fell 26 percent to $5.4 billion due to lower oil prices and maintenance work at refineries. The stock fell $2.84, or 2.3 percent, to $123.60, the most of the 30 stocks in the Dow.

Among other companies reporting earnings, LinkedIn surged $22.98, or 10.8 percent, to $236 after the professional networking company's results topped analysts' estimates. LinkedIn had its biggest quarterly membership gain since going public in May 2011.

Brad Sorensen, Charles Schwab's director of market and sector research, said the jobs report was "moderately disappointing."

"That tepid growth we've seen, (the economy) not being able to reach escape velocity, continues to be the story," Sorenson said.

Investors have been watching economic reports closely and trying to anticipate when the Federal Reserve will start easing back on its economic stimulus.

The central bank is buying $85 billion of bonds a month to keep long-term interest rates low and encourage borrowing. That stimulus has boosted the stock market to record levels. The Standard & Poor's index closed above 1,700 for the first time Thursday.

US stocks slip after disappointing jobs report
Stocks slip after US economy adds fewer jobs than forecast in July; LinkedIn surges

By Steve Rothwell, AP Markets Writer | Associated Press â€" 28 minutes ago

NEW YORK (AP) -- A tepid jobs report pushed the stock market slightly lower on Friday.

Indexes edged down after the U.S. added fewer jobs than forecast in July, curbing optimism that the economy is poised to pick up strength in the second half of the year.

The government reported that 162,000 jobs were created last month, pushing the unemployment rate down to a 4½-year low of 7.4 percent. The number of jobs added was the lowest since March and well below the 183,000 economists polled by FactSet were expecting.

Bible Study / Marian devotions
August 02, 2013, 06:54:33 PM

A Marian devotion in Christianity is a gift (total or partial) of oneself, or one's activities to the Virgin Mary, i.e. a willingness and desire to dedicate oneself to, or venerate her, either in terms of prayers or in terms of a set of pious acts. Such prayers or acts may be accompanied by specific requests for Mary's intercession to God.

There are many Marian devotions, ranging from multi-day prayers such as Catholics' Novenas, the veneration of icons in Eastern Christianity, and activities which do not involve prayers, such as the wearing of scapulars or maintaining a Mary garden. --Wiki

"Comparing this with the 2006 and 2009 first semester figures estimated at 28.8 percent and 28.6 percent, respectively, poverty remained unchanged as the computed differences are not statistically significant," it said.

On Wednesday, a Pulse Asia survey said four in every ten Filipinos think that the national economy is no different from last year.

The survey also showed that 29 percent of the respondents think the state of the national economy worsened while 28 percent think it is now better.

Pulse Asia said a small majority of those saying that the state of the economy worsened is strongly affected by such economic deterioration while nearly half of those who think that the economy grew are somewhat affected by such growth.

Bayan said there can be no inclusive growth "so long as the entire economy is controlled by a few."

"The regime has consistently favored the few Forbes billionaires while further marginalizing the poor," the group said.

Earlier this year, the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) revealed that poverty incidence in the country practically remained unchanged with almost three out of 10 FIlipinos living below the poverty line in the first half of 2012.

The agency reported that poverty incidence was estimated at 27.9 percent during the first semester of 2012.

Shopping mall mogul Henry Sy, whose net worth was estimated at $12 billion or P521 billion, was ranked as the richest Filipino for the sixth consecutive time.

Malacañang expressed no worry on the matter, saying the businesses of these billionaires even help the economy.

"Yung mga kumpanya naman po for instance nina Ginoong Henry Sy, marami po silang ine-employ na tao," said Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda.

"One mall would hire so many people... It provides an avenue, an opportunity where businesses can be established because people converge in that particular (area), for instance, a mall," he added.

MANILA, Philippines - The Forbes list of the 50 wealthiest Filipinos only highlights the widening gap between the rich and the poor in the country, a militant group claimed on Friday.

Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) said the Forbes list "belies any claim of inclusive growth" in the country amid the recent economic gains being trumpeted by the government.

"The persons included in the Forbes list own companies that control every aspect of the Filipino’s life... Their mind-boggling wealth comes into stark contrast with the worsening poverty and unemployment of many Filipinos," Bayan said in a statement.

The Forbes list revealed that the combined wealth of the 50 richest Filipinos is worth $65.8 billion or about P2.8 trillion, which is more than a quarter of the Philippines' gross domestic product.

Citing the close bond of family life as the greatest defence against the unknown, the speech also mentioned the queen's second son Prince Andrew, who was serving in the Royal Navy at the time.

"If families remain united and resolute, giving shelter to those living alone and unprotected, our country's will to survive cannot be broken," she was to have said.

The papers were released by the National Archives as part of a 30-year rule that sees official records from the Prime Minister's office and Cabinet Office released to the public.

They also revealed how Margaret Thatcher, who was the prime minister at the time, dismissed the idea of hiring the then 21-year old William Hague - now Foreign Secretary - as an advisor to the Treasury.

"No," she wrote, underlining the word three times before adding "This is a gimmick and would be deeply resented by many who have financial economic experience." (Reporting by Li-mei Hoang, editing by Paul Casciato)

The queen's speech was imagined to be broadcast in the spring of 1983 against the backdrop of worsening U.S.-Soviet relations, during a year in which then U.S. President Ronald Reagan described the Soviet Union as an "evil empire".

The queen was to have continued: "I have never forgotten the sorrow and the pride I felt as my sister and I huddled around the nursery wireless set listening to my father's (King George VI's) inspiring words on that fateful day in 1939 (at the start of the World War Two).

"Not for a single moment did I imagine that this solemn and awful duty would one day fall to me."

Written by government officials, the hypothetical speech was part of a secret exercise designed to prepare Britain for the threat of a possible World War Three, but was never broadcast.

It starts by referring to the queen's traditional Christmas address to the nation.

"The horrors of war could not have seemed more remote as my family and I shared our Christmas joy with the growing family of the Commonwealth," she was to have said.

"Now, this madness of war is once more spreading through the world and our brave country must again prepare itself to survive against great odds."

Archived papers reveal Queen's 'World War Three' speech

By Li-mei Hoang

LONDON (Reuters) - Relations between the Soviet Union and the West had become so tense 30 years ago that British officials drew up a speech for the Queen to deliver to the nation in the event of a nuclear war, newly released archives showed on Thursday.

In the speech, the monarch was to urge Britons to remain united and resolute in the face of the "madness of war."

I asked him not to take unnecessary risks. He responded: "I have been thinking of the words of the disciples to Jesus in the gospels before he died. 'Must you go to Jerusalem?' they asked. And the answer is yesâ€"sometimes you must go to Jerusalem. You must go with your physical body in order to be there."

There are others like him. I think of a young Syrian nun I know who was living abroad and recently chose to return to Deir Mar Musa. She told me before she left: "I sometimes hope that I can contain the suffering of the entire world in my heart. And if I can do thisâ€"and continue to loveâ€"then maybe I can move the world towards love, too."

As for the rest of us: We watch as 100,000 die and millions become refugees, tempted to believe that it is not our problem. We do this at risk not only to Syria but also to our own humanity, for in the end, we decide whose concerns are ours. Father Paolo's dreamâ€"one that he might have given his life forâ€"is that our circle of belonging might expand to include not only Christians and Muslims but everyone, until there is no one left standing outside it.

Ms. Saldana, a writer living in Jerusalem, is the author of "The Bread of Angels," (Doubleday, 2010.)

I spoke to Father Paolo last year shortly after his expulsion, when he was in Iraq. My father had died the week before we spoke. I gave my condolences on losing his country, and he consoled me about losing my father. He said: "I would never presume to take your father's place. But I would hope that, if I could, I might be something of a father to you."

It was that impulseâ€"to take those abandoned as his ownâ€"that led him back to Syria. There, Muslims and Christians alike call him Abuna Paolo, a combination of his Arabic and Italian names. The title for a priest, it means "Our father, Paolo."

When we last spoke, he was preparing this latest illegal trip into Syriaâ€"one of several he had taken in the past few months into rebel-held areas. He told me he couldn't bear to remain in the safety of exile while others died.

Today, visitors to the monastery are rare. In August of last year, after it had been attacked at gunpoint three times in six months, the community asked that female guests no longer spend the night. After the Syrian uprising began in 2011, Father Paolo publicly criticized the regime of Bashar Assad. For some Christians, who as minorities received protection under the Alawite regime, Father Paolo's stance was a betrayal. Othersâ€"Christians and Muslimsâ€"saw him as a hero.

After attending the funeral of an opposition filmmaker in May 2012, Father Paolo was expelled by the Assad regime from the country that he had called home for three decades. "I am not leaving Syria," he told Vatican radio in June 2012. "This is just my corpse that is leaving Syria. I remain one hundred percent in Syria."
#19932
By the time I met Father Paolo in 2000 at Deir Mar Musa, the religious community was welcoming tens of thousands of visitors a year, many of them Muslim. A bear of a man who speaks Italian, English, French and Arabic, and who quotes the Quran as easily as the gospels, Father Paolo greeted Muslims in the local dialect and invited them to share a meal, exemplifying the monastic tradition that every guest should be welcomed as Jesus himself.

Father Paolo fasted during Ramadan and taught that Christians should not simply tolerate Muslims, but love them. He was fond of saying: "You know, the Muslims have a saying, that no one can escape the power of God, and the power of God is his mercy."
#19933
I have been a friend of Father Paolo's for more than a decade, and I spoke to him about his trip via Skype before he left. Earlier this summer, a priest named Father François Mourad was murdered in a monastery in northern Syria, and the danger to Christians was increasingly apparent. When we discussed why he was choosing to put himself in such danger, the reason he gave was as radical as it is simple. He was going out of love.

Father Paolo is no stranger to Syria. In 1982, as a young Catholic priest trained in Arabic, he traveled to the ruined sixth-century monastery of Deir Mar Musa in the Syrian desert, 50 miles north of Damascus, on a spiritual retreat. Shaken by the civil war in neighboring Lebanon, he decided to create a community of monks and nuns dedicated to prayer, hospitality and dialogue with Islam. He named the community at Deir Mar Musa "al-Khalil," the title given by God in the Quran to Abraham, the "friend of God" who welcomed the stranger.

He worked to bring faiths together in a land where that can be fatal.

By STEPHANIE SALDANA

On Wednesday, Pope Francis celebrated a Mass for the feast of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuit order to which he belongs. The pope paused to remember those Jesuit priests who had given their lives in service of their faith. "I'm thinking of Padre Paolo," he said.

At the moment, no one in the room knew if Father Paolo Dall'Oglio was still alive.

Two days before the pope's prayer, Father Paolo, an Italian Jesuit priest associated with the Syrian opposition, had been seen walking the streets of Raqqa, a rebel-controlled area in northern Syria. Then he disappeared. Activists reported that the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, a militant group affiliated with al Qaeda, had kidnapped him. Contradicting reports soon emerged. Had Father Paolo been kidnapped, or had he purposefully met with the group to negotiate the release of hostages and to broker a truce between Kurds and Islamic extremists fighting in the north?

One thing is certain: No one has heard from him since.

Adam and Eve?

These primeval people aren't parallel to the biblical Adam and Eve. They weren't the first modern humans on the planet, but instead just the two out of thousands of people alive at the time with unbroken male or female lineages that continue on today.

The rest of the human genome contains tiny snippets of DNA from many other ancestors â€" they just don't show up in mitochondrial or Y-chromosome DNA, Hammer said. (For instance, if an ancient woman had only sons, then her mitochondrial DNA would disappear, even though the son would pass on a quarter of her DNA via the rest of his genome.)

As a follow-up, Bustamante's lab is sequencing Y chromosomes from nearly 2,000 other men. Those data could help pinpoint precisely where in Africa these ancient humans lived.

"It's very exciting," Wilson Sayres told LiveScience. "As we get more populations across the world, we can start to understand exactly where we came from physically."

More ancient Adam

But the results, though fascinating, are just part of the story, said Michael Hammer, an evolutionary geneticist at the University of Arizona who was not involved in the study.

A separate study in the same issue of the journal Science found that men shared a common ancestor between 180,000 and 200,000 years ago.

And in a study detailed in March in the American Journal of Human Genetics, Hammer's group showed that several men in Africa have unique, divergent Y chromosomes that trace back to an even more ancient man who lived between 237,000 and 581,000 years ago.

"It doesn't even fit on the family tree that the Bustamante lab has constructed â€" It's older," Hammer told LiveScience.

Gene studies always rely on a sample of DNA and, therefore, provide an incomplete picture of human history. For instance, Hammer's group sampled a different group of men than Bustamante's lab did, leading to different estimates of how old common ancestors really are.

Y chromosome

Bustamante and his colleagues assembled a much bigger piece of the puzzle by sequencing the entire genome of the Y chromosome for 69 men from seven global populations, from African San Bushmen to the Yakut of Siberia.

By assuming a mutation rate anchored to archaeological events (such as the migration of people across the Bering Strait), the team concluded that all males in their global sample shared a single male ancestor in Africa roughly 125,000 to 156,000 years ago.

In addition, mitochondrial DNA from the men, as well as similar samples from 24 women, revealed that all women on the planet trace back to a mitochondrial Eve, who lived in Africa between 99,000 and 148,000 years ago â€" almost the same time period during which the Y-chromosome Adam lived.
#19945
Tracing history

Researchers believe that modern humans left Africa between 60,000 and 200,000 years ago, and that the mother of all women likely emerged from East Africa. But beyond that, the details get fuzzy.

The Y chromosome is passed down identically from father to son, so mutations, or point changes, in the male sex chromosome can trace the male line back to the father of all humans. By contrast, DNA from the mitochondria, the energy powerhouse of the cell, is carried inside the egg, so only women pass it on to their children. The DNA hidden inside mitochondria, therefore, can reveal the maternal lineage to an ancient Eve.

But over time, the male chromosome gets bloated with duplicated, jumbled-up stretches of DNA, said study co-author Carlos Bustamante, a geneticist at Stanford University in California. As a result, piecing together fragments of DNA from gene sequencing was like trying to assemble a puzzle without the image on the box top, making thorough analysis difficult.

Almost every man alive can trace his origins to one man who lived about 135,000 years ago, new research suggests. And that ancient man likely shared the planet with the mother of all women.

The findings, detailed today (Aug. 1) in the journal Science, come from the most complete analysis of the male sex chromosome, or the Y chromosome, to date. The results overturn earlier research, which suggested that men's most recent common ancestor lived just 50,000 to 60,000 years ago.

Despite their overlap in time, ancient "Adam" and ancient "Eve" probably didn't even live near each other, let alone mate. [The 10 Biggest Mysteries of the First Humans]

"Those two people didn't know each other," said Melissa Wilson Sayres, a geneticist at the University of California, Berkeley, who was not involved in the study.

Local stocks tumbled Wednesday sharply alongside that of other regional markets as global markets awaited word from the US Federal Reserve.

The main-share Philippine Stock Exchange index slipped by 88.88 points, or 1.32 percent, to close at 6,639.12. All counters were in the red. But the most battered were the mining/oil and property sub-indices which both fell by over 2 percent.

Dealers said the markets were cautious ahead of the expected release of the US Fed’s statement on monetary policy at the end of a two-day meeting.

There were over three decliners for every single gainer at the local market. Value turnover amounted to P7.13 billion.
Megaworld fell by 4.14 percent. BDO, Petron and AGI also slumped by over 3 percent.

Among those that bucked the day’s decline was Bloomberry (+0.85 percent), which reported a turnaround to profitability in the second quarter.â€"Doris C. Dumlao

The Ombudsman claimed that DVRI operated as a securities dealer without license from the Securities and Exchange Commission and that the series of stock transactions it made over a one-year period smacked of insider trading.

Two months after indicting Ongpin and the others, Morales removed  Bitonio Jr., Magno, Velasco, Velarde, Garcia, Guevarra II, Bundoc, Baliton, Macatlang, Cayetano, Tolentino, Cerezo and De Guzman from the service after having been found  administratively liable for grave misconduct and conduct prejudicial to the best interest of the service.

With the issuance of the arrest warrants to all accused, the trial is expected to start eight months after Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales indicted Ongpin and the former DBP officials for violations of Section 3 (e) of Republic Act No. 3019 or the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act.

The David-led DBP extended two loan facilities (P150 million in April 2009 and P510 million in November 2009) to DVRI despite being undercapitalized; the value of the stocks offered by Ongpin as collateral were below the standards required by the bank and regulator; Ongpin resorted to corporate layering to get the loan; and the proceeds of the second loan were diverted for use in purchasing DBP-owned stocks in Philex Mining Corp.

A Sandiganbayan source said Sto. Tomas, Tolentino, Cayetano, Macatlang, Soleta, Oliveros, Manalo and Torres had each posted P40,000 in bail bond.

The antigraft court spared from the arrest warrant order Ongpin and 10 former DBP officials led by its then president, Reynaldo David,  Franklin Velarde, Joseph Donato Pangilinan, Miguel Romero, Edgardo Garcia, Armando Samia, Rolando Geronimo, Jesus Guevarra II and Crescencia Bundoc because they posted bail five months ago.

The case stemmed from the complaint filed by DBP chair Jose Nuñez and DBP president and CEO Francisco Del Rosario Jr.
#19955
Aside from Sto. Tomas, the Sandiganbayan also issued arrest warrants against Renato Velasco, Ramon Durano IV, Floro Oliveros, Benedicto Ernesto Bitonio Jr., Arturo Baliton, Perla Soleta, Warren de Guzman, Teresita Tolentino, Marissa Cayetano, Nelson Macatlang and Rodolfo Cerezo.

Velasco is a former top aide of then President Gloria Macapagal- Arroyo.

DVRI president Josephine Manalo and Goldenmedia Corp. treasurer Ma. Lourdes Torres were also included in the arrest order.
#19956
The antigraft court said it “does not find any need for additional supporting evidence solely for the purpose of determining probable cause” as it rejected moves by the defendants to delay the trial.

It said the defendants’ arguments were “matters of defense which are appropriate in the trial proper.”
#19957
Two private individuals were also included in the arrest order, but not Ongpin, a former Marcos trade minister who posted bail five months ago.

In a resolution penned by Justice Jose Hernandez and concurred in by Justices Samuel Martires and Maria Cristina Cornejo, the antigraft court’s third division rejected the various motions filed by the accused.

The Sandiganbayan found “probable cause” to issue the warrants after it “personally, independently and judiciously examined and evaluated the resolution and order of the Office of the Ombudsman [and the] records and evidence to support the same.”

Former Labor Secretary Patricia Sto. Ongpin in 2009.

The Office of the Ombudsman has claimed that the loans that DBP issued to Delta Ventures Resources Inc. (DVRI) to acquire the government financial institution’s shares in Philex Mining Corp. were behest loans.

Sto. Tomas and Magno were members of the DBP board during the Arroyo administration.

If the patient is suicidal, we can also prescribe them Flupenthixol, which reduces suicidal behavior.

Psychotherapy is also a great way to address the intrapsychic tension in patients suffering with these psychopathologies.

I recommend they see a clinical psychologist and a psychiatrist!

Mount Mihara happens to be an active volcano, and it’s open enough that its lava flow can be accessed from the top by jumping. This fact was abused in 1933 by Kiyoko Matsumoto, a 21-year-old student. Kiyoko leaped in the depths of the mountain and immediately evaporated in the lava pit’s hellish temperatures of up to 2,200 °F (1,200 °C). This started a fashion trend among the Japanese. For almost a decade, jumping into the boiling lava rivers of Mount Mihara became the hottest way to commit suicide… literally. Thousands of people imitated Kiyoko’s example. 944 people jumped in the crater in 1933 alone.

The authorities have since fenced off the vantage point where the jumpers leaped to their fate. This is said to have stopped the suicides, although there’s no way to be sure. It’s not as if there’s going to be a bodies to be found. -- http://listverse.com/

Mount Mihara
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mount Mihara is an active volcano on the Japanese isle of Izu ÅŒshima. Although the volcano is predominantly basaltic, major eruptions have occurred at intervals of 100â€"150 years.

Mount Mihara's major eruption in 1986 saw spectacular lava fountains up to 1.6 kilometers high. The eruption had a VEI of 3, and involved a: Central vent eruption, radial fissure eruption, explosive eruption, lava flows and a lava lake eruption. There was also a 16-km high subplinian plume. All of the island's 12,000 inhabitants were evacuated by dozens of vessels consisting of both the military and civilian volunteers.

The most recent eruption was in 1990.

A theory accepted by some scholars states that the term Visayas was derived from the name of a 7th-century thalassocratic Malay Srivijaya Empire. In Sanskrit, sri (श्री) means "fortunate," "prosperous," or "happy" and vijaya (विजय) means "victorious" or "excellence". In the 12th century, parts of the Sulu Archipelago and the Visayas Islands were either subject or tributaries of the empire. --Wiki

Inspiration & Hope / 'Pinay' cat reaches Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A 4-year-old cat that stowed away in a container ship headed from Manila, Philippines, to Los Angeles is gaining weight and getting stronger after the trip without food or water left it near death.

Los Angeles County animal control director Marcia Mayeda says the orange and white female cat was weak and frail after the 7,300-mile trip. But after two weeks of treatments, the feline is in fair condition.

Hospital staff named the cat Pinay (pin-EYE'), a common name for a female Filipino.

The cat has cleared quarantine but needs to be adopted into a calm home because she is still skittish. Potential adopters can email daccevents@animalcare.lacounty.gov.

A year ago, a kitten named Ni Hao (NEE' how) survived a freighter trip from China and was placed in a home.
