"Our building does not have our full name on it, so it is likely the thieves wouldn't know what we do here," Stallings said. "But when they found out, they obviously changed their minds and decided to return the stolen items."

Stallings said she appreciated that the items were returned and wondered who the mystery thieves were and what prompted them to return the items.

"Most of the time, individuals don't pay attention to services like sexual assault unless you've been touched by the crime, or received service yourself or have been in contact with someone who has been victimized," she said. "These individuals felt compelled to give back for some reason. And, of course, I don't know officially, but that's my gut feeling that they were close to the cause. It was a terrible night, but it ended in disbelief. We are thankful everything has been returned."

"I couldn't visualize that our place had been burglarized by just a shopping cart, because it felt like it was much more sophisticated and no windows were broken," Stallings said.

No suspects have been apprehended and the investigation is still ongoing, Cervantes said, adding that, although the items were returned, the thieves will be held accountable for their crime.

"They still committed the crime and it is still considered a burglary," Cervantes said. "It doesn't negate that. There may be a lessened sentence, but the crime and charges are still the same."

The San Bernardino Sexual Assault Services building is not clearly marked because the center wants people who enter to feel comfortable walking in without feeling like they are being judged, Stallings said.
#19621
The note read: "We had no idea what we were taking. Here is your stuff back. We hope that you guys can continue to make a difference in people's lives. God Bless."

"I started thinking that even though I was upset with the damage they caused inside, because it was very costly, I just thought sometimes people make bad choices and it was compassion that brought those items back to us," she said. "I've been at this agency for 26 years and we have never ever had something that touched us like this."

The following day, authorities realized the burglars had entered the building through a small hole in the roof, Cervantes said.
#19622
The investigation wrapped up around 2 a.m., Stallings said, so she returned home.
But she heard again from police about two hours later.

"I got a call from San Bernardino Police directly, who said, 'Candy, can you please come back down? We have some suspicious activity,'" she said. "And I was thinking to myself, 'This is too much. We are not going to recover from this.'

"The officer who was monitoring the building after the robbery noticed a shopping cart in front of the door filled with what I initially thought were additional items," she added.
But it turned out someone had returned the stolen items along with a note inside the laptop apologizing for the theft, San Bernardino Police Department Sgt. Vicki Cervantes told ABCNews.com.

"When I looked inside the cart I thought, 'These are our items that they had taken before. This doesn't make any sense. Why would they bring it back?'" Stallings said. "And then, an officer found the note inside the laptop as he was taking fingerprints."

Stallings said she received a phone call from her alarm company at 10:30 p.m. Friday informing her that the motion detectors at the group's office building had detected movement and that the alarm had gone off.

"I headed down to the office and I was like, 'Oh, my goodness, this is going to be terrible,'" Stallings said. "We have never been broken into because we are very cautious and lock our doors all the time."

Stallings headed down to the center, where she saw a San Bernardino police helicopter flying overhead. Police and a canine unit were investigating the break-in.

Inside, she said, the building's telephone wires had been cut, its Internet connection was down and six computer towers, a laptop, speakers for the laptop, children's story books and 100 bags of small candy had been stolen.

"I got chills when I saw the note," San Bernardino Sexual Assault Services Executive Director Candy Stallings told ABCNews.com. "I was teary eyed, and I had so many mixed emotions."

"A police officer I was with at the time said they had never seen anything like this in the 20 years they were on the force," Stallings added. "We were shocked, completely shocked."

It may be proof even thieves have consciences.

Sure, they robbed a California non-profit group that helps sexual assault victims last Friday. But they ended up returning the stuff. And, judging by the kind note they left, they seemed to be really sorry about it.

Meiji Restoration and the Decline of the Samurai:

In 1868, the Meiji Restoration signaled the beginning of the end for the samurai.

The Meiji system of constitutional monarchy included such democratic reforms as term limits for public office and popular balloting. With public support, the Meiji Emperor did away with the samurai, reduced the power of the daimyo, and moved the capital from Kyoto to Tokyo.

The new government created a conscripted army in 1873; many of the officers were drawn from the ranks of former samurai.

In 1877, angry ex-samurai revolted against the Meiji in the Satsuma Rebellion; they lost the Battle of Shiroyama, and the era of the samurai was over.

Tokugawa Shogunate (Edo Period):

Hideyoshi had exiled the large Tokugawa clan from the area around Kyoto to the Kanto region in western Japan. The Taiko died in 1598, and by 1600, Tokugawa Ieyasu had conquered the other western daimyo from his castle stronghold at Edo (the future Tokyo).

Ieyasu's son, Hidetada, became shogun of the unified country in 1605, ushering in about 250 years of relative peace and stability for Japan.

The strong Tokugawa shoguns domesticated the samurai, forcing them to either serve their lords in the cities, or give up their swords and farm. This transformed the warriors into a hereditary class of cultured bureaucrats.

Azuchi-Momoyama Period / Restoration of Order:

The Warring States Period began to draw to a close in 1568, when the warlord Oda Nobunaga defeated three other powerful daimyo, marched into Kyoto, and had his favorite, Yoshiaki, installed as shogun.

Nobunaga spent the next 14 years subduing other rival daimyo, and quelling rebellions by fractious Buddhist monks.

His grand Azuchi Castle, constructed between 1576 and 1579, became of symbol of Japanese reunification.

In 1582, Nobunaga was assassinated by one of his generals, Akechi Mitsuhide. Hideyoshi, another general, finished the unification and ruled as kampaku (regent).

Hideyoshi invaded Korea in 1592 and 1597.

Later Muromachi Period:

By 1460, the daimyo were ignoring orders from the shogun, and backing different successors to the imperial throne. When the shogun, Ashikaga Yoshimasa, resigned in 1464, a dispute between backers of his younger brother and his son ignited even more intense bickering among the daimyo.

In 1467, this squabbling erupted into the decade-long Onin War. Thousands died, and Kyoto was burned to the ground.

The Onin War led directly to Japan's "Warring States Period," or Sengoku. Between 1467 and 1573, various daimyo led their clans in a fight for national dominance. Nearly all of the provinces were engulfed in the fighting.

Fall of the Kamakura / Early Muromachi (Ashikaga) Period:

Despite such incredible help from nature, the Mongol attacks cost the Kamakura dearly.

Unable to offer land or riches to the samurai leaders who rallied to Japan's defense, the weakened shogun faced a challenge from Emperor Go-Daigo in 1318. The emperor was exiled in 1331, but returned and overthrew the Shogunate in 1333.

This Kemmu Restoration of imperial power lasted only three years.

In 1336, the Ashikaga Shogunate under Ashikaga Takauji reasserted samurai rule, but it was weaker than the Kamakura had been. Regional constables called "daimyo" developed considerable power, meddling in the shogunate's succession.

Kamakura Period:

The two clans fought once more in the Genpei War (1180-1185), which ended in victory for the Minamoto.

Minamoto no Yoritomo established the Kamakura Shogunate, which ruled much of Japan until 1333. While the Kamakura were powerful, they never conquered northern and western areas of the country. The shoguns also faced periodic resistance from other samurai clans.

In 1268, an external threat appeared. Kublai Khan, the Mongol ruler of Yuan China, demanded tribute from Japan. Kyoto refused. The Mongols invaded in 1274 with 600 ships, but a typhoon destroyed their armada. A second invasion fleet in 1281 met the same fate.

End of the Heian Era / Rise of Samurai Rule:

The weak imperial line received a fatal blow to its power in 1156, when Emperor Toba died without a clear successor. His sons, Sutoku and Go-Shirakawa, fought for control in a civil war called the Hogen Rebellion.

In the end, both would-be emperors lost; the imperial office lost all its remaining power.

During this civil war, the Minamoto and Taira samurai clans rose to prominence. They fought one another in the Heiji Rebellion of 1160. After their victory, the Taira established the first samurai-led government, or shogunate, with the emperor as a figurehead.

The defeated Minamoto were banished from the capital at Kyoto.

Early Feudal Era Samurai:

Some samurai were relatives of the landowners, while others were simply hired swords. The samurai code emphasized loyalty to one's master, even over family loyalty. History shows that the most loyal samurai were usually family members or financial dependents of their lords.

In the 900s, the weak emperors of the Heian Dynasty (794-1185) lost control of rural Japan. The country was riven by revolt; the emperor soon wielded power only within the capital. Across the country, the warrior class moved in to fill the power vacuum.

By 1100, the samurai effectively held both military and political power over much of Japan.

History of the Samurai
By Kallie Szczepanski, About.com Guide
http://asianhistory.about.com/

The Origin of the Samurai:

The samurai, a class of highly skilled warriors, gradually developed in Japan after the Taika reforms of 646 A.D. The reforms included land redistribution and heavy new taxes, meant to support an elaborate Chinese-style empire. As a result, many small farmers had to sell their land and work as tenant farmers.

Meanwhile, a few large landholders amassed power and wealth, creating a feudal system similar to medieval Europe's. This top-heavy system proved unwieldy, and crumbled within a few centuries.

As in Europe, the new feudal lords needed warriors to defend their riches. Thus, the samurai warrior (or "bushi") was born.

BAYAN Muna party-list Representative Neri Colmenares on Thursday demanded Malacañang to explain the P75 billion "unli" or unlimited pork barrel realigned to various projects in 2012 without the approval of Congress.

In the first hearing of the House committee on appropriations on the proposed 2014 state budget Wednesday, Budget Secretary Butch Abad admitted that Malacañang got hold of P75 billion in funds from government agencies and realigned these to various projects.

Abad cited National Budget Circular 541, which allows Malacañang to use the funds which remain unobligated by June 30, 2012 not only to augment existing programs of any agency but also "fund priority programs and projects not considered in the 2012 Budget but expected to be started or implemented during the current year."

"This is an almost unlimited presidential pork barrel because it has been suddenly transformed into a lump sum amount and allows the President to choose projects and beneficiaries for the said fund," Colmenares said.

Colmenares pointed out that the said provision could be "constitutionally infirm" as the Constitution states that no public fund shall be disbursed without appropriation by law.

"Malacañang should explain what projects were funded and the amounts realigned thereto because with this circular the President practically enjoys 'unli'- pork," the party-list lawmaker said.

Colmenares said Malacañang should submit to Congress documents showing how much of the unused funds were returned to the Budget department, and which projects they were spent on. (Kathrina Alvarez/Sunnex)

Topping the list of coolest malls in the world is the $20-billion Dubai Mall. China's Golden Resources in Beijing came in at No. 2, while Canada's West Edmonton Mall was third.

Mall of the Emirates in Dubai and Istinye Park in Istanbul, Turkey rounded up the top five.

8)

#19660
In a statement about its inclusion in the list, Festival Supermall announced it will be building an additional 110,000 square meters for stores and restaurants, highlighted by River Park, a 2,518-sq.m. natural feature slated to be the mall’s centerpiece already under construction and is set to open in November.

River Park will include dining outlets with an amphitheater, water gardens and a 1.5-kilometer “live creek” surrounding the mall.

“River Park will add a new dimension in family dining. It boasts of a lush natural gardens and the live creek,” George Domingo business development head of Filinvest Alabang, Inc. said in the statement “Imagine dining in such a lovely space.”

Change is also underway for the existing mall as it undergoes a facelift slated to begin this month and to be completed by the first quarter of 2014, it added.
#19661
A surprise entry on the list is Festival Mall in Alabang, which came in higher than Greenbelt at No. 33.

Festival Mall

“Festival Mall has theme parks, as in more than four different kinds. Aside from the massive Ace Hardware and Handyman stores, the shopping here is just all right. What's great, though, is your ability cross off everything on your ‘fun’ to-do list in one trip: go bowling, see a movie, shoot some pool, ride a roller coaster, sing some karaoke and/or play some bingo. It's like the adult equivalent of Chuck E. Cheese's and Six Flags smashed into one. And with a recent expansion proposal given the green light, expect an additional 600 shops and 74 acres of themed fun in the coming years,” it said.
#19662
Greenbelt in Makati came in at No. 34, which the website praised as “a lush center with over seven acres of dewey greenery under an open sky.”

"The view is nice from the outdoors, but the indoor shopping will tempt you inside, with stores like Louis Vuitton, Hérmes and Balenciaga making it worth your time...and obviously your money,” it said.
#19663
The website, meanwhile, dubbed SM City North EDSA “the grandaddy of malls in the Philippines,” having opened in 1985.

“With four annexes, a huge main City Center building, 12 movie theaters, a bowling alley and a Sky Garden, this mall's 400 restaurants and 1,100 shops are only part of the draw. The exterior of Annex 2 appears like architectural waves rippling up the side of the facade, leading to the Sky Garden, where you'll find yourself amidst 55 species of plants, grass, and trees. There's even a calming waterfall. While the mall's recent expansions are undeniably sleek and modern, don't let all the new school charm fool you: there's still a bingo hall hidden inside, so bring your grandma and all your change. Make that old lady proud,” it said of the Quezon City mall.
#19664
Two other SM malls are on the list, which was dominated by malls in the United States. SM Megamall was ranked at No. 18, followed by SM City North EDSA at No. 19.

“If you find yourself in the Philippines, you may need to reserve an entire week to visit each of the country's three SM supermalls, though the SM Megamall might be the craziest: it's spread out over 44 acres, with over 750 stores from brands like Polo to local designers,” Complex.com said of the Ortigas Center mall.

“Need a visual to help you understand how much space this is? Imagine approximately 33 football fields of shopping mall stacked 6 stories high, all with original, empire-like stores with names like Toy Kingdom and Cyberzone. Aside from the more predictable cinema, which houses 12 theaters, go check out the Chapel of Eucharistic Lord, tucked away on the fifth floor. Because after you've spent all you cash, what else can you do but pray?” it said.
#19665
“When it comes to the SM Mall of Asia, shopping is secondary to everything else the sprawling 4.2 million square feet mall has to offer. Four buildings are interconnected by walkways, but we recommend you ditch the Main Mall and head to the Entertainment Mall, where all the fun is,” the website said, citing attractions such as the San Miguel Coca-Cola IMAX theater and the Director's Club Theater “for more intimate screenings and a selection of 30 cozy La-Z-Boys.”

“After a few hours in your chair, you can lace up your ice skates and try not to fall on the Olympic-sized ice rink, or nerd out in the Nido Fortified Science Discovery Center with 11 themed rooms with names like Grossology and Spaceship Earth,” it added.

MANILA â€" PAGASA is monitoring a low-pressure area near Davao City that could become a tropical depression.

PAGASA said the LPA was spotted 190 kilometers east of Davao City as of 4 a.m. and was embedded along the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ).

Speaking to radio dzMM, PAGASA forecaster Jun Galang said the LPA may intensify into tropical depression over the West Philippine Sea.

Due to the LPA, eastern Visayas and Caraga region will experience cloudy skies with moderate to occasionally heavy rains and thunderstorms which may trigger flashfloods and landslides.

MIMAROPA, Bicol region and the rest of Visayas and Mindanao will have cloudy skies with light to moderate rains and thunderstorms.

Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rains and thunderstorms.

“To hold him any further without a valid hold departure order or valid warrant of arrest is an open violation of international law which we certainly do not want our own fellow countrymen to experience aboard,” he said.

Olalia said Beersum should not be condemned for expressing himself and for his message.

“Though he may seem ‘unpopular’ or ‘disagreeable’ to others who are mostly unwittingly agitated by the jingoist demonization of a young foreigner whose candid views and youthful zeal sincerely questioned government’s claimsâ€"even quite emphaticallyâ€"the singular incident at the Sona rally obscures the real and more fundamental issues. Is he saying something that we should listen and look into?” Olalia said.

Lawyers Rey Cortez and Jun Oliva of the National Union of Peoples Lawyers said they waited more than five hours to gain access to Beersum, being allowed to see him only at around 3 p.m.

“We were not allowed access to the BI office to personally talk to him even after we invoked his right to counsel. Instead we were told to get a pass,” Cortez said.

Lawyer Edre Olalia, NUPL secretary general, protested the “indefinite detention” of Beersum and said the authorities had no legal basis to stop him from boarding his return flight.

BI records showed Beersum arrived in Manila on June 13 on a 21-day tourist visa.

The Dutchman, however, said in an earlier TV interview that he arrived on June 5 and his visa was good for 59 days.

Beersum was the foreigner photographed berating Filipino antiriot policeman Joselito Sevilla who was crying while standing his ground in front of charging demonstrators on Commonwealth Avenue. The photo went viral on the Internet.

Beersum denied taunting or insulting Sevilla. He said he was only asking him and the other policemen why they were attacking the demonstrators.

The 20-year-old Dutchman declined to speak to reporters but smiled wearily at photographers and television cameramen. He had a cell phone and was in touch with his host, lawyers and the Dutch Embassy, immigration officials said.

Wilson Soloren, BI intelligence chief at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1, told reporters Beersum had been declared an “undesirable alien” by the BI board of commissioners and his name was placed on the “Alert List Order.”

The BI said Beersum would be rebooked on a flight to the Netherlands probably by noon Wednesday after the necessary clearances were obtained and his mug shot and biometrics were taken.

Thomas van Beersum, a Dutch national, who was photographed standing up to and yelling at a weeping Filipino riot policeman during an anti-government protest in Manila on July 22, has his finger print taken using a secure electronic enrollment kit (SEEK) at the immigration office of the international airport in Manila on August 6, 2013. A Dutch activist blamed for making a Philippine policeman cry in an incident that drew global attention was detained on August 6, the immigration bureau said. AFP PHOTO

MANILA, Philippinesâ€"The Dutch activist who joined antigovernment protesters outside Congress during President Aquino’s State of the Nation Address last month was apprehended by immigration agents at the airport yesterday as he was about to board a flight to China.

Immigration OIC Commissioner Siegfred Mison said Thomas van Beersum was stopped pursuant to a summary deportation order issued against him last week.

Beersum, in a blue hoodie, was accosted by immigration policemen and brought to the Bureau of Immigration holding area. He was reportedly with his Filipino fiancée who was allowed to take the flight.
