While confined, Cincinnatus is not told when his execution will occur. This troubles him, as he wants to express himself through writing "in defiance of all the world's muteness," but feels unable to do so without knowledge of how long he has to complete this task. Indifferent to the absurdity and vulgarity around him, Cincinnatus strives to find his true self in his writing, where he creates an ideal world. Taken to be executed, he refuses to believe in either death or his executioners, and as the axe falls the false existence dissolves around him as he joins the spirits of his fellow visionaries in "reality."

The novel takes place in a prison and relates the final twenty days of Cincinnatus C., a citizen of a fictitious country, who is imprisoned and sentenced to death for "gnostical turpitude." Unable to blend in and become part of the world around him, Cincinnatus is described as having a "certain peculiarity" that makes him "impervious to the rays of others, and therefore produced when off his guard a bizarre impression, as of a lone dark obstacle in this world of souls transparent to one another." Although he tries to hide his condition and "feign translucence," people are uncomfortable with his existence, and feel there is something wrong with him. In this way, Cincinnatus fails to become part of his society.

The novel is often described as "Kafkaesque," but Nabokov claimed that at the time he wrote the book, he was unfamiliar with German and "completely ignorant" of Kafka's work. Nabokov interrupted his work on The Gift in order to write Invitation, describing the creation of the first draft as "one fortnight of wonderful excitement and sustained inspiration." Some scholars have argued that the central plot of Invitation has its roots in Chernyshevski, a character from The Gift.

While Nabokov stated in an interview that of all his novels he held the greatest affection for Lolita, it was Invitation to a Beheading that he held in the greatest esteem.

From Wikipedia

Invitation to a Beheading (Russian: Приглашение на казнь, Priglasheniye na kazn') is a novel by Russian American author Vladimir Nabokov. It was originally published in Russian in 1935-1936 as a serial in Contemporary Notes (Sovremennye zapiski), a highly respected Russian émigré magazine. In 1938 the work was published in Paris, with an English translation following in 1959. The English version was translated by Nabokov's son, Dmitri Nabokov, under the author's supervision.

As in Hiroshima, many in Nagasaki died after the immediate impact of the bomb had gone away from mysterious ailments which we now associate with radiation poisoning. No-one, understandably, knew what to do to help the victims of this newest of illnesses.

In 1953, a report by the US Strategic Bombing Survey put the number of deaths at 35,000, wounded at 60,000 and 5,000 missing. In 1960, the Japanese put the number of dead at Nagasaki at 20,000 and the number of wounded at 50,000. Later, the Nagasaki Prefectural Office put the figure for deaths alone at 87,000 with 70% of the city's industrial zone destroyed.

Death and injury in Nagasaki and the surrounding areas, depended on where you lived. People who lived on the Koba hillside, just three and a half miles from ground zero, were protected from the blast by a mountain. People caught up in the blast came to Koba for help and Fujie Urata, who lived in Koba and had seen a large flash, could not believe what she was seeing. She described people with great sheets of skin hanging off of their bodies; grotesque swollen faces; torsos covered with large blisters.

However, considerable damage was done to the city. The horrific injuries suffered at Hiroshima were also witnessed at Nagasaki. The city's medical facilities were not totally destroyed by 'Fat Man' as at Hiroshima - but nobody was capable of coping with those who were injured in the blast.

One survivor, Sadako Moriyama, had gone to a bomb shelter when the sirens sounded. After the bomb had gone off, she saw what she thought were two large lizards crawling into the shelter she was in, only to realise that they were human beings whose bodies had been shredded of their skin because of the bomb blast.

'Fat Man' was a very effective bomb. Its blast was bigger than 'Little Boy's'  but its impact was reduced by the natural topography of the city. Where the bomb blast hit at its peak, massive damage was done. An area about 2.3 miles by 1.9 miles was destroyed but other parts of the city were saved from the blast. Curiously, the city's train service was not interrupted and the fire damage that followed Hiroshima did not occur in Nagasaki as many parts of the city were broken up by water. The fires simply could not cross these gaps and they burned out.

As Nagasaki had been targeted in the past, people in the city had become blasé when the air raid siren sounded. The same was true on August 9th. The irony was that Nagasaki was well served with good bomb shelters and far fewer people would have been killed or injured if the air raid sirens had been listened to. The surrounding hills had tunnels dug into them which would have been very effective for the people who could have reached them.

The weapons expert on 'Bockscar' was Commander Ashworth. Sweeney had been ordered that only a visual run was allowed - not a run guided by radar. Ashworth told Sweeney that radar would have to be used if Nagasaki was covered in cloud - it was. Most of Sweeney's bombing run was done using radar but at the last minute a break in the cloud was found by the bomb aimer. He targeted a race track and at 28,900 feet, 'Fat Man' was dropped.

By the time 'Bockscar' got near to its primary target, Kokura, it became clear that the weather had saved the city. The city was covered by cloud. Sweeney made three runs over the city but could find not break. With lack of fuel an issue, he decided to move to his only other target - Nagasaki. Sweeney only had enough fuel for one run over the city and not enough to fly back to Tinian. He would have to land at Okinawa.

'Bockscar' carried an atomic bomb that differed from 'Little Boy' carried by 'Enola Gay' for the Hiroshima bombing. 'Fat Man' was not a gun-type bomb but used the implosion method; it had a circle of 64 detonators that would drive pieces of plutonium together into a supercritical mass. 'Little Boy' had used Uranium 235. 'Fat Man' weighed about 10,000 lbs and was 10 feet 8 inches long. It had the explosive capacity of about 20,000 tons of high explosives.

Whereas the 'Enola Gay'  had had a relatively uneventful journey to her target at Hiroshima, the same was not true for the plane picked to drop the next atomic bomb - 'Bockscar'. Both 'Bockscar' and 'Enola Gay' were B29 Superfortress bombers. The crew of 'Bockscar'  gathered for their takeoff at 03.40 hours, August 9th, at Tinian Island. The flight commander, Major Sweeney, found that one of the fuel pumps on the B29 was not working. 800 gallons of aviation fuel had to sit in its fuel tank - it could not be used for the engines but the plane had to carry its weight and get nothing in return from the fuel.

Nagasaki was a major shipbuilding city and a large military port. But it was not a favoured target as it had been bombed five times in the previous twelve months and any damage caused by an atomic bomb would have been difficult to assess. Also, the way Nagasaki had grown as a port meant that the impact of a powerful bomb might be dissipated as the city had grown across hills and valleys. The city was also broken up with stretches of water. However, fate and the weather was to be Nagasaki's undoing.

Nagasaki was not America's primary target. This was Kokura. The three potential targets for a second bomb were Kokura, Kyoto and Niigata. Nagasaki was only added to a list of potential targets when Kyoto was withdrawn (it had been the secondary target for a second bomb) because of its religious associations. The third potential target was Niigata - but this was withdrawn from the list as the distance to it was considered to be too great. Therefore, the Americans were left with just two targets - Kokura and Nagasaki.

Nagasaki suffered the same fate as Hiroshima in August 1945. The bombing of Nagasaki on August 9th was the last major act of World War Two and within days the Japanese had surrendered.

Two senior American military figures - General Groves and Admiral Purnell - were convinced that two atomic bombs dropped within days of the other would have such an overwhelming impact on the Japanese government that it would surrender. Scientists at Los Alamos were also intrigued as to which type of bomb was the better - a uranium or plutonium based bomb. 'Little Boy' showed its effectiveness at Hiroshima but another bombing mission was needed to see what damage a uranium bomb could do.

The concern about the weight of the roof at York Minster was such that the vaults in all but the smallest aisles were made of wood. This decreased the pressure on the pillars, foundations etc but led to future problems concerning fire and death watch beetles. York Minster does have flying buttresses but these were added in the Nineteenth Century.

The ability to cope with greater weights also allowed Gothic architects to use larger windows. The Normans had been limited to using small slit windows. Now cathedrals and churches could have large stained glass windows. The Great East window at York Minster is the size of a tennis court, a size that would have been unthinkable for the Normans.

These new huge buildings cost vast sums of money. Where did the church get this money from? Basically, the bulk of it came from the people of England. Peasants and town dwellers paid numerous taxes to the church - a tax at baptisms, marriages and deaths; tithes and for centuries people had to work for free on church land. The revenue gained from these assisted the building of cathedrals like those at Lincoln, York, Canterbury and Chichester.
#19537

Flying buttresses at Chichester Cathedral
#19538
Another development that strengthened church buildings, was the use of pointed arches. This shape allowed a much greater weight to be carried when compared to a Norman rounded arch. Cathedral roofs were now much larger than Norman roofs. Therefore, they were a lot heavier. To ensure that the walls and pillars could take such a weight, the architects in this era developed what were known as buttresses. These were additions to the main part of the cathedral that allowed the extra weight to be transferred to additional parts of a cathedral than ran alongside the nave and then down into the foundations. The architects simply spread the weight to other points in the building. 'Flying buttresses' allowed the outward pressure of the massive roofs to be resisted.
#19539
Gothic churches and cathedrals were fundamentally different to Norman buildings. The increase in knowledge and skills acquired over the years, meant that stone was specifically cut so that it fitted next to other stone blocks with precision. Therefore, the large blocks of stone favoured by the Normans, were replaced by shaped stone. Another major change was that the hollow walls used by the Normans were not used by later architects. Walls and pillars were solid and this allowed them to cope with much greater weights. This simple fact allowed churches and especially cathedrals to be much larger than Norman ones. This, along with the money gathering ability of the Church, explains why the cathedrals and churches of the Gothic era were so much larger than previous ones.
#19540
http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/

Gothic church architecture in Medieval England developed from Norman architecture. 'Gothic architecture' is the term used to describe building styles between 1200 to 1500. Such a large time span meant that a number of styles developed within Gothic architecture and it is common to divide these styles into three sections. The building between 1200 to 1300 is usually referred to as Early English; between 1300 to 1400, the style of building is referred to as Decorated and from 1400 to 1500, it is known as Perpendicular. It is common for major church buildings to show examples from all three of these periods.

Gothic cathedrals are characterised by large towers and spires. Whereas Norman architecture can be seen as being 'dumpy' due to their more limited knowledge of building, the Gothic era coincided with a greater knowledge of engineering and this is reflected in the church buildings completed during this era.

There are more than 33,800 Cor members living in Vietnam, mostly in a few districts in Quang Ngai and neighbouring Quang Nam province.

Of the 18,500 people living in Tay Tra district, 95 per cent belong to the Cor ethnic group, district chairman Ngoc said.

They make a living mostly from farming cassava grains and cinnamon.

Thanh is being treated at a medical centre while his son is being looked after by his nephew Ho Ven Bien.

"My uncle doesn't understand much of what is said to him, and he doesn't want to eat or even drink water," Bien told dpa.

"He's very sad. He doesn't say anything now," he said. "We know he wants to escape my house to go back to the forest so we have to keep an eye on him now."

Hoang Anh Ngoc, chairman of the district, said local authorities had visited Thanh at the medical centre and given him food.

"I asked officials to keep a close eye on the two men to make sure they don't escape back into the forest," he told dpa.

The discovery has shaken the small community which thought the two men dead.

"No one could imagine Thanh and his son could live 40 years in isolation in the hard conditions of the jungle" said villager Ho Van Xanh.

The two men survived by cultivating vegetables and hunting animals. They had no contact with the outside world.

Photographs showed the younger man with dishevelled hair wearing a loin cloth made from tree bark The men were also found to have made shirts out of the same material.

Thanh, who was fighting for North Vietnam when the bomb exploded, left behind another son, Ho Van Tri.

"My father is very weak and the doctors are taking care of him, but my brother's health is fine even though he looks very thin," said Tri, who was six months old when his father fled into the jungle.

Hanoi - An 82-year-old man and his 41-year-old son were found living in a jungle in central Vietnam after they went missing during the country's war with the United States.

The older man could communicate a little in the Cor ethnic minority language, but his son only knew a few words.

Ho Van Thanh was last seen running into the woods with his then infant son Ho Van Lang after a bomb exploded in his home, killing his wife and two eldest sons in 1973.

They were discovered when two people from a nearby village ventured 40 kilometres into the forest looking for firewood and spotted the two men's tree house.

General Butt Naked claims that he had regular conversations with the devil from the age of 11 to 25. He has suggested that during the war he had “special powers”, and magical invisibility. Joshua Blahyi would recruit teenagers to fight, and, unlike anything I have heard before, his troops would enter battle wearing women’s clothing. In January of 2008, General Butt Naked admitted to the cannibalism of a human heart. Blahyi’s rampage ended in 1996, when the Civil War in Liberia was over. In 1997, Joshua Blahyi repented his sins and devoted his life to the Church. He became a preacher, got married and has three children. To this day, Blahyi lives in Liberia and insists that he cannot be held responsible for his satanic past. Between the years 1980 and 1996, General Butt Naked and his men were responsible for the deaths of more than 20,000 people. -- http://listverse.com/

Blahyi would regularly sacrifice a victim before entering battle. When asked about the sacrifices, he is quoted as saying, “Usually it was a small child, someone whose fresh blood would satisfy the devil. Sometimes I would enter the water where children were playing. I would dive under the water, grab one, carry him under and break his neck. Sometimes I’d cause accidents. Sometimes I’d just slaughter them.” Blahyi was asked to give an account of his typical battle, “So, before leading my troops into battle, we would get drunk and drugged up, sacrifice a local teenager, drink their blood, then strip down to our shoes and go into battle wearing colorful wigs and carrying dainty purses we’d looted from civilians. We’d slaughter anyone we saw, chop their heads off and use them as soccer balls. We were nude, fearless, drunk and homicidal. We killed hundreds of people, so many I lost count.”

During the First Liberian Civil War, Joshua Blahyi, or General Butt Naked, was a Liberian warlord and leader on the side of Roosevelt Johnson. Blahyi’s eccentric acts of violence and satanic rituals have made him the focus of many published articles. After the end of the First Liberian Civil War, Joshua Blahyi was interviewed by various media outlets and produced some chilling quotes. At age 11, Blahyi claims that the devil called him on the telephone and commanded him to perform human sacrifices. After the Liberian conflict began, in the late 1980s, Blahyi gained the nickname General Butt Naked because he was known to lead troops into battle completely naked, with the exception of his shoes and gun. Apparently, he believed that his nakedness was a source of protection from bullets.

Palanca said he did a medical examination on Arroyo on July 30. He submitted pictures of Arroyo showing her deteriorating health to the Sandiganbayan, along with the motion to detain her at home, on Aug. 2.

“In my opinion, one mode worth trying to reverse the ongoing deterioration of President GMA’s health is to release her from detention even on a temporary liberty, so that her body can rally the protective forces only her mind can command to combat the negative forces that are making her sicker by the day,” Palanca said.

“It is a common medical fact that prolonged confinement in a hospital not just as a patient but as an accused in a criminal case is not conducive to a feeling of a sense of well-being.”
#19557
“It is not healthy to keep a patient in continued confinement in a medical facility for over a year,” Sison said.

He said Arroyo continued to complain of cervical radicular pain and low back pain with radiculopathy.

“Also, she has recurrent dysphagia or difficulty swallowing solid food due to esophageal stenosis, which contributes to poor appetite and weight loss,” Sison said.
#19558
In a separate progress report, spine surgeon Antonio Sison said Arroyo was diagnosed to have cervical spine radiculopathy and degenerative lumbar spine disease.

“Mrs. Arroyo has not been cured of her illness and she continues to feel its effects to date. It is doubtful whether her current medical management regime will result in any marked medical improvement of her condition,” Sison said.

He said it had been one-and-a-half years since surgical procedures were performed on Arroyo.
#19559
“Clearly, President GMA is a suffering sick lady. I say this without any fear of contradiction,” Dr. Ernesto Palanca said.

“I say this because I have seen her three times in the past 10 years when she was in the pink of health.

“She has a degenerative bone disease and this is being addressed. She has a narrowing in her esophagus. How can she by her own increase her antibodies and enhance her own immune system if authorities continue to detain her as an accused criminal?”

Arroyo has been confined at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center for one-and-a-half years, where the doctors have told the Sandiganbayan that she has “not been cured of her illness and is getting sicker by the day.”

They said only a house arrest could reverse Arroyo’s deteriorating health.

Neighbour Phil Eby said he didn't know the couple very well but expressed surprise at the shooting.

"I met him a couple of times. He seemed like a pretty nice guy," Eby said. "But I don't remember her at all."

It wasn't immediately clear if Medina had an attorney.

A company official for The Gables Club, a gated, upscale condominium complex in Coral Gables, said Friday that Medina worked there "briefly," but declined to elaborate on when or why he left the job.

Police said in the arrest affidavit that Medina never called 911, only turning himself in to police after going to see family and confessing.

Thursday night, police had taped off the area around the condo complex where the couple lived. The complex is made up of peach-colored townhomes with faded wood roofs.

Several cars filled the parking area in front of the townhouses as police questioned neighbours and possibly friends of the victim. Some of those gathered were crying.

On a personal blog to which the Miami Herald linked, someone named Derek Medina touted e-books of his on subjects ranging from saving marriage through communication to "humans who are gifted and can see the supernatural spirit ghost world we live in."

"The author was with his wife in New York and his wife was attacked by a ghost," he writes, describing the e-book. "She was seeing a ghost and was being taunted and messed with. She informed her husband and he told her to go to sleep and he would watch over her. Minutes later he was attacked by a demon ghost and he was sick and throwing up."

Photos posted by Medina on Wednesday show the family enjoying a meal alongside an unnamed marina and lounging beside a swimming pool.

Public records show that Medina and Alfonso first married in January 2010, divorced in February 2012 and then remarried three months later. Medina bought the condominium unit where the couple lived in March 2012 for $107,000.

On his Facebook page, Medina claimed to be a supervisor at a property management company and to have appeared in the Miami-based crime drama "Burn Notice," though his name doesn't appear in online credits for the show.

"The content was reported to us," Feinberg wrote. "We took action on the profile â€" removing the content and disabling the profile, and we reached out to law enforcement. We take action on all content that violates our terms, which are clearly laid out on our site."

The post claimed that his wife was punching him and that he wasn't going to stand any more abuse. YouTube videos linked to his Facebook page earlier this week, however, show him working out in a martial arts studio, punching and kicking a heavy bag.

The next and final post â€" also at 11:11 a.m. and titled "Rip Jennifer Alfonso" â€" was a gruesome photograph showing a woman in black leotards slumped on the floor. She looked like she had fallen backward from a kneeling position, with her legs bent to her sides and blood on her left arm and left cheek. The photo was up for more than five hours before Facebook removed the page late Thursday afternoon.

According to the affidavit, the 6-foot-2, 200-pound Medina said the couple became involved in a heated argument in an upstairs bedroom when he armed himself with a gun and pointed it at her. He said Alfonso left the bedroom, returning later to say she was leaving him. He says he went downstairs and confronted her in the kitchen, when she began punching him. He claims he went back upstairs to get his gun and confronted her again, at which time she grabbed a knife. Medina said he was able to disarm her and put the knife in a drawer, but that when she began punching him again, he shot her several times, the affidavit says.

The post about the slaying on a Facebook page identified as Medina's went out to friends at 11:11 .a.m. Thursday.

Other neighbours said Medina was very private and never said hello.

Lori Wilkinson saw the couple and their daughter several times at the apartment's pool and mailbox and said they seemed like a nice family.

A neighbour who only identified herself as Sylvia said she was shocked.

"I couldn't sleep last night. I kept thinking of her," Sylvia said, although she said she did not know the couple.

"He would walk around here and kinda patrol the area. He was always telling me there was a lot of stuff going on around here," Dade said.

He said he thought the incident was bizarre and had only a few other interactions with Medina after that.

"He was just different," Dade said.

"Im going to prison or death sentence for killing my wife love you guys, miss you guys takecare Facebook people you will see me in the news," said the Thursday morning post.

The photo showed what was apparently Alfonso's body, slumped on the floor.

One of Medina's neighbours, 33-year-old Yoshi Dade, said Medina approached him more than a year ago while Dade was working out at the apartment complex. Dade said Medina told him he was the neighbourhood watch patrol for the building and that he had a concealed weapons permit. Those claims could not be confirmed immediately.

Medina was charged with first-degree murder and ordered held without bond at his arraignment Friday.

The public defender's office was appointed to represent Medina, who initially appeared confused when an attorney instructed him not to discuss the case with anyone.

Medina's case captured national attention when he posted a public confession of the alleged murder on his Facebook page, followed by a gruesome photo.

Florida man accused of fatally shooting wife apparently posted photo of her body on Facebook

BY KELLI KENNEDY AND MICHAEL MISHAK, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS AUGUST 9, 2013 4:00 PM

SOUTH MIAMI, Fla. - The South Florida man who authorities say killed his 26-year-old wife and apparently posted a photo of her corpse on Facebook told residents of his townhouse complex that he possessed a concealed weapon permit and belonged to a neighbourhood watch patrol.

Derek Medina, 31, turned himself in to police on Thursday after Jennifer Alfonso was fatally shot inside the couple's home in South Miami, a suburb of Miami. When officers responded to the home, they found Alfonso's body, as well as her 10-year-old daughter, who was unharmed.

Poems and Poets / anyone lived in a pretty how town
August 10, 2013, 06:27:23 AM

anyone lived in a pretty how town
(with up so floating many bells down)
spring summer autumn winter
he sang his didn't he danced his did

Women and men(both little and small)
cared for anyone not at all
they sowed their isn't they reaped their same
sun moon stars rain

children guessed(but only a few
and down they forgot as up they grew
autumn winter spring summer)
that noone loved him more by more

when by now and tree by leaf
she laughed his joy she cried his grief
bird by snow and stir by still
anyone's any was all to her

someones married their everyones
laughed their cryings and did their dance
(sleep wake hope and then)they
said their nevers they slept their dream

stars rain sun moon
(and only the snow can begin to explain
how children are apt to forget to remember
with up so floating many bells down)

one day anyone died i guess
(and noone stooped to kiss his face)
busy folk buried them side by side
little by little and was by was

all by all and deep by deep
and more by more they dream their sleep
noone and anyone earth by april
wish by spirit and if by yes.

Women and men(both dong and ding)
summer autumn winter spring
reaped their sowing and went their came
sun moon stars rain

He he, sa tinuod lang, nakasapi pa ko. I bartered one of their posts with a totem pole I earlier bought in Brooklyn Chinatown. I told them I bought the pole for wan milyon dalars. Tuo pud sila...
