wow!  now my only problem is my unreliable broadband.  but i've learned to live with it.  when it shows tantrums, i get up to do some housework.  i think they call it multi-tasking? :)

unhappy people don't need to announce their unhappiness.  first, they are not countries.  second, it's time to convince themselves that money does not impress.

i've been trying to look for the UN indices used.  no luck so far.  but i'll continue until i find them.  there are just a myriad of studies and the results in terms of ranking vary.  (i.e., UN as against gallup poll, for one.)

some observations, so far: northern europe leads.  so do cold countries.

In 2012, the Philippines also performed well when Elaine Kay Moll, sent by Bb Pilipinas, won 3rd runner-up.

Mutya’s victory coincides with the Gold [50th] Anniversary of the Bb. Pilipinas organization. Before her win, the last time a Bb Pilipinas queen brought home a major international crown was in 2005, when Lara Quigaman was proclaimed Miss International in Tokyo, Japan.

A LEAP FOR THE PHILIPPINES. Mutya with Bb Pilipinas pageant director Madame Stella Marquez-Araneta

As Mutya Datul begins her reign as an international beauty queen, she only has this to say:

“I am very thankful to the Bb Pilipinas team and to Madame Stella Marquez-Araneta for giving me this chance. I hope that I can be faithful in my duties as a Bb Pilipinas winner and as Miss Supranational 2013.” - Rappler.com
#19309
But before that can happen, she has a year of duties to fulfill as Miss Supranational 2013. Mutya said, “Next month [Oct], I will return to Belarus so I can meet the past winners of Supranational. We will be travelling to different countries starting with Panama.”

Panama is an important nation to the Supranational franchise; its founding organization, the World Beauty Association, is based there. The pageant itself is quite young â€" only on its 5th year â€" but it has quickly established itself as a prestigious competition, attracting over 80 nations this year alone.

HER VICTORY IS THEIR VICTORY. Bb Pilipinas 2013 1st runner-up Pia Wurtzbach, Bb Pilipinas-Tourism Joanna Cindy Miranda, Miss Supranational 2013 Mutya Johanna Datul, Bb Pilipinas-Universe Ariella Arida and Bb Pilipinas-International Bea Rose Santiago
#19310
As Miss Supranational 2013, Mutya also wins a heavy purse: US$25,000 which she says will go to her mother’s daily medication [mom Perly Datul suffers from a blood condition called aplastic anemia], the education of her 5 siblings and a savings account for the future.

LOVING DAUGHTER. Mutya wipes her mom's forehead as her dad gives a message

Mutya also intends to remain in Manila to work as a model and perhaps make it as an actress so she can continue to provide for her family.
#19311
According to the beauty queen, her family has always been her inspiration in life and that she joined pageants so she could raise money to help support them. Her Supranational crown is dedicated to them.

VICTORY FOR THE FAMILY. Part of Mutya's winnings will go to her mom's medication, her siblings' education and personal savings

Although Mutya did not expect to win, she says she had a strong premonition she would.

“Right before I set foot on Belarus, I suddenly saw myself returning with a crown on my head. I don’t know why I saw that! And then when the two hosts [on coronation night] said that the winner comes from ‘far, far, far away,’ I suddenly felt something heavy on my head.”

And before she knew it, the Philippines was announced and she was being crowned the winner.
#19312
The most heartwarming part of the night was when Mutya’s family went up on stage. Her mother, father and 3 out of 5 siblings were there to welcome her. For a moment, they hugged and cried together.

TOUCHING MOMENT. Mutya with her parents and siblings on stage
#19313
The highlight of the victory party was when Mutya talked about the closed door interview with the judges. She explained that the contestants entered the room in groups of 5 and they all had to answer the same question: Tell us about yourself and why you want to be Miss Supranational.

A FUNNY STORY. Mutya talks about her funny interview experience at the Miss Supranational pageant

Jokingly, she told this story, which drew much laughter from the crowd:

“The other 4 girls were like newscasters. They spoke too much. I was just listening and falling asleep. Honestly! I knew the judges felt the same way. So when it was my turn, I woke them up by saying ‘Mabuhay!’

"Then I introduced myself in their language. After that, I went straight to the point, saying, ‘I want to become Miss Supranational because this is my ultimate dream and I want it more! I want to be an ambassadress, a good example and give inspiration to many different people.’

"I think the judges loved me because I kept it short and to the point!”

The loudest to laugh in the audience of press folk was news reporter Patricia Fernandez, a former Bb Pilipinas titleholder herself. Even TV presenters from the different networks laughed at the candor of the newly-crowned beauty queen.

GLOWING LIKE THE SUN. Mutya Datul surrounded by the other Miss Supranational candidates, all happy for her victory. Photo from the Miss Supranational Facebook page

At her welcome party in Gloria Maris, Gateway Mall, Cubao the evening of Sept 9, the self-confessed "probinsyana" [country girl] greeted the press and apologized for being several hours late. She admitted that she got confused and missed her flight since it was her first time to travel abroad, alone.

In Filipino, she said, “First of all I want to say sorry that I made you all wait so long. This is not the first time I got lost. I also missed my flight on the way to Belarus!”

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines’ reputation as a pageant powerhouse took a giant leap with the victory of a Filipina in the Miss Supranational 2013 beauty pageant held last Sept 6 [Sept 7 PH time] in Minsk, Belarus.

Mutya Johanna Datul, who hails from the town of Sta Maria in the province of Isabela, bested 82 other beauties from all over the world, winning the crown and the Miss Personality special award, and becoming the first-ever Filipina and Asian to win Miss Supranational.

The 5’8” stunner won the right to represent the Philippines in the international beauty tilt when she won the Supranational Philippines title during the Bb Pilipinas 2013 Gold pageant last March.

Jokes and Humor / Re: Napoles had plastic surgery?
September 10, 2013, 10:00:57 PM

Janet Lim Napoles together with Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales during yesterday’s Inter-Agency Anti-Graft Coordinating Council (IAAGCC) news conference.

“Another way to determine if it’s the real De Lima or not is by pinching both her cheeks simultaneously as hard as you can,” advised the doctor. “If the skin sags, that is definitely Napoles, but if you hear a loud shriek, then you’re definitely in trouble.”

“Napoles would also appear in public telling everyone that the NBI believes that she’s still in the country but they’re hiding,” added Dr. Pollux. “What they don’t realize is that she’s really hiding in plain sight.”

Her endgame, according to the doctor, is to kidnap the real Justice Secretary, and changing her face to look like Napoles, and claiming the P10M reward for herself.

note: these satirical news excerpts are from the website with the blurb "News that won’t make you depressed to read the news."  for the complete news item, here's the link: http://sowhatsnews.wordpress.com/2013/08/28/napoles-underwent-plastic-surgery-to-look-exactly-like-leila-de-lima/

This author had to ask the doctors: “How are we gonna know who is the real Justice Secretary?”

“Remember when De Lima downplayed the news that Napoles had plastic surgery?” asked Dr. Troy. “That was Napoles!”

Releasing the list of her vehicles, 28 houses as well as her absurd possessions was also Napoles’ handiwork.

“She’s flaunting it!” said the doctor.

Napoles Underwent Plastic Surgery to Look Exactly Like Leila De Lima

August 28, 2013

MANILA, Philippines  â€" The reason that the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) alongside the Department of Justice (DOJ) are having difficulties tracking down Janet Lim Napoles can be known: The alleged mastermind in the P10 billion “pork barrel scam” already had extensive plastic surgery done to look exactly like DOJ Secretary Leila de Lima.

Zamboanga City was plunged into a crisis after about 300 MNLF rebels rampaged through coastal communities in the city that left at least six people dead.

The fighting happened after the troops backed by tanks blocked the guerrillas â€" armed by assault rifles â€" from marching into Zamboanga city to raise their flag at city hall.

The military said  the rebels were boxed into a Muslim coastal slum called Rio Hondo and were refusing to negotiate with security forces.

Zamboanga Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco said sporadic gunbattles had killed a navy special forces member, a policeman and four civilians, while 24 civilians, rebels and soldiers were wounded. The military said at least two guerrillas were killed.

Those working for evacuation and distribution of relief goods are permitted to go around the city.

On Tuesday, classes will also remain suspended in all levels in both public and private institutions in Zamboanga City.

Work in all offices likewise is also cancelled for Tuesday except for offices providing frontline services, it added.

September 9, 2013 - 2:33pm

MANILA, Philippines - Filipino netizens extended their sympathies and support to the residents of Zamboanga City where a clash between rebel forces and government troops erupted on Monday.

On Twitter, Filipinos are using the hashtag "#PrayForZamboanga," which has become one of the trending topics for the Philippines, along with "MNLF," "ZamboCrisis," and "Mindanao."

"MNLF" stands for Moro National Liberation Front, the groups whose alleged members infiltrated some coastal barangays of Zamboanga City.

nudists belong to their colony.  palakwa usa nila sa downtown florida, chances are dakpon.  so your example does not hold.  ang mga nalisoan bitaw, i-commit man sa mandaluyong.  kanang epok nimo nga imong ipanghambog, di na madawat ug black-tie dinner sa white house.

same here in tb.  your cut-and-paste chicks don't belong to any thread here.  mao nga gihimo mi nimong buing kay bisag asa na lang nimo i-paste.

ayaw kalibog nganong atakehon ka.  and not only by me.  it's simply because of who you are, the things you stand for, and how you insist on ramming these down other people's throats, expecting adulation in the process.  miserable.

kaluod ba nimo, balong.  mao ning maglisod ang uban dinhi ug laban nimo kay matinumanon ka sa imong tira-pasagad nga gusto, gawas pa sa imong lahi nga reality.

this is a forum for ideas, no matter how far out, and for shared laughter and experiences.  you insist nga sagolan gyod nimo ug mga cut-and-pasted nga mga baye from who knows what websites you've joined for a fee to feed a rabid old man's depravity.  i now understand why it's difficult for any woman to put up with you. >:(

Talk of the Town / Re: Libel Case DEFAMATION
September 09, 2013, 02:36:46 PM
as for the second definition, u.s. jurisprudence may require proof of damage, such as medical records or lost contracts because the plaintiff had been called an idiot.

also, for a defamation charge to stick, it has to be provably false.  uh-huh.  how?  an i.q. test result?  weird.

and this last one is the hardest to prove in this case. ;D

is applying the word idiot to someone, imagined or otherwise, enough cause for a defamation suit?

answer: it would depend on what the meaning of the word idiot is...

According to Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, idiot has two definitions. One is “a person affected with extreme mental retardation,” and the other is “a foolish or stupid person.”

where's the catch?  the first definition may prove a suit as retarded, to say the least.  i still have to see a retardate go to court because he was called a retardate.
