We have mix cultures kasi that's why we are kinda saksak-sinagol!

We claim adobo as Filipino food but it isn't.  Mexicans claim that's their but it's not.  We claim pansit as ours but it's not.  But no one can claim law-oy as theirs. it's pinoy, no more no less! hahaha

Mike, the good thing about being at the end of your rope is that you can always go back to the same rope. They said that in the end, everything will be alright and if it's not alright yet, meaning that's not the end yet.   Good is good!  It's really true that sometimes and I think most of the times, when it rains, it really pours but at the end there's a rainbow waiting for you.  I am sending you love and light and good vibes!  May God bless you some more!

Grazie

Really? so there's a qualification now who rides habal-habal?  that's funny!  if that happens in America, that's called descrimination but in Bohol that's protection to foreigners.  So who gets a ticket if they see a tourist ride a habal-habal?  The driver then?  Isn't it ride at your own risk? i dunno...

Learn from your experience but don't be traumatized.  Trusting is not bad, just be careful.  If you cease to trust people including your friends, they are not gonna trust you too.  Life is full of challenges and, insecurity is one of them but, I hope I am not just saying this because I am a true-blooded Boholano, you are in a better place in Bohol than in any other parts of the Philippines or everywhere.

We were those poor people you described below (or in the other thread re increasing crime) who hardly had no food to eat nor access to medical but we had (and I wanna believe we still have)  better values.  The elders in our family inculcated to us the value of respect and hardwork and patience and perseverance and more to survive our poverty.  There were times we didn't have rice to eat before we go to school so my mother would cut a pre-mature banana so we had something in our belly while we study ABC or 1 plus 1.  We never thought of stealing our neighbors' chicken littering in our backyard.  We didn't cry because we didn't have nice food to eat or we just use banana leaves as our umbrella while the other girls had cute pink umbrellas. Yes, we had lots of utangs but we didn't steal just to have easy life.  I really want to say that poverty should not be the reason - value formation is.

I understand that the peso's strength is not entirely the barometer of a good economy that it has bearing, right?  in a layman's mind, strong peso is better than weak peso thereby connoting that our economy is better when the peso is strong.

I meant the window dressing of our economy or maybe that's the same as BSP intervention - meaning to sugar coat our peso, yes, one is for the sake of our exporter. That was just the speculation of some people those who didn't really delve into the data.  But on the other hand, how can the BSP intervene when there are a lot of factors affecting the rise and fall of peso?  hmmm, i need economic 101!

Home > Nation > Top Stories Makati mall blast kills 3; cops say could be resto LPG tank
10/19/2007 | 01:36 PM

Email this | Email the Editor | Print | Digg this | Add to del.icio.us (Updated 2:55 p.m.) At least three people were killed while several others were hospitalized after an explosion of still undetermined origin rocked a Makati City shopping mall on Friday afternoon, initial reports said.

Police Director Geary Barias, chief of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), said initial information showed that the explosion emanated from the Luk Yuen Noodle House at the first level of the Glorietta 2 shopping mall.

He said it was apparently an "accidental explosion" of a liquefied petroleum gas tank, but added that "we are still verifying it."

Barias said the PNP Bomb Data Center has sent a team to the site to inspect the area.

Asked if the incident was connected to any terrorist activity, Barias said that, "di pa malaman ang koneksyon nito, pero initial info namin is LPG blast (We still don't know if it's connected, but our initial information is it's an LPG blast)."

However, dzBB radio quoted shopping mall security guards as saying that the blast actually emanated from a nearby delivery area.

The bridge way which connects Glorietta 2 to the Park Square shopping mall sustained heavy damage, the report said.

The Luk Yuen restaurant, which is situated near the Park Square bus and jeepney terminal, was hit by fire in September last year.

Metro Manila police spokesman Supt. Rodel Sermonia said the three fatalities were killed on the spot.

"Initial reports show we have three dead on the spot and several wounded. We don't have the exact number of wounded people," he told dzBB radio.

However, radio dzBB reported a fourth fatality but the information could not be immediately confirmed.

Radio dzMM said three of fatalities were a male and two females.

Fatalities, injuries

The Makati Medical Center (MMC) has admitted as many as 42 people who were rushed from the Glorietta 2 shopping mall, which was hit by an explosion on Friday afternoon.

A nurse interviewed by dzBB radio said no less than 30 people were in the hospital, but could not comment on the extent of their injuries.

A separate report said about 25 people were rushed to the Ospital ng Makati.

For his part, Alfie Reyes, corporate spokesman of mall owner Ayala Land, said that, "roughly about a dozen people were injured, with the possibility of some fatalities."

He added that, "We will extend assistance to all of the victims and if any of their families wish to reach out to us, we will do so (and help them)."

Reyes added the mall area has been "evacuated" and that all of the victims have been taken out of the area.

Chaos, fear

The explosion created a thick cloud of dust near Glorietta II and forced the closure of the Glorietta and Park Square 2 malls and Landmark supermarket.

An eyewitness told GMANews.TV that it sounded like a powerful firecracker blast, and then a thudding sound was heard, like that of a ceiling that had collapsed. Shoppers scampered out of the mall, some of them crying, while police agents rushed in.

The explosion was heard near the Glorietta 2 mall, from across the Landmark shopping center, near Ayala Avenue, in the financial district of Makati City. There were unconfirmed reports of injured persons.

A second eyewitness told radio dzBB that he saw smoke coming out of a building. It sounded like the explosion occurred inside or near one of the establishments.

Mike Ochosa, an analyst for Solar Sports who was inside the mall at the time, said he was going out of the mall toward the parking lot when he heard the explosion.

Ochosa described the explosion as similar to lightning but muffled. He said he saw shoppers, some of them panicking, run out of the mall.

"I heard something like thunder but muffled inside the building. Then people were running out. There was smoke, people running out, and police rushing in," he said.

He said the location of the explosion was near a department store at the side of Pasay Road. - GMANews.TV

Excerpt from the column below:  The sad part of the business is that even if the peso appreciates, it is never felt locally. Local prices will remain the same. Take for example oil products. If the world market for liquid petroleum gas rises, our local prices rise along with it. If it falls the peso price for LPG will remain the same. Even if the peso appreciates, there is still no roll back in LPG prices. There must be something wrong with our economics.

My comment:  This is so true.  Once the oil products rises prices remain that way until there's another rise but not roll down when the prices go down.  In most cases, consequently, fares also rise and so are the basic commodities.

I guess the families of overseas workers earning dollars appreciate more when the peso depreciates because then they can get more from their remittances.
#19080
Can you please explain the data you posted here, Gervistill?  This seems to be your forte.  What do you think is benificial to the Filipinos as whole?  Having a strong peso is supposed to be better for the Philippine economy, or am I wrong?  How volatile is our economy? Do you think there's just a window dressing in our economy as alleged by many?  But if that's the case, it's been quite awhile and how can the Philippine economy keep up with that "show"?  Maybe you can enlighten me, Gervistill.  Thanks a lot!

Thanks for reminding about the fiesta!  That's really true, Lorenzo! Bol-anons from all over the country and the world would always want to come home for fiesta!  Is it just the food like humba, kabaw, torta or whatever food we serve during fiestas?  I think it's our way of thanksgiving to our patron saints and most of all, the spirit of camaraderie not just with family and friends but also strangers.  People we don't know still come to our humble home during fiesta and my family serve them food without question, understanding that everybody is welcome to celebrate with us.  That makes me a proud Boholano some more!

Thanks, RV!  You are right; Tagbilaran has grown so fast.  Even our little Manga District, it is now trying inch by inch to keep up with Tagbilaran.  I was told the cost of property in Manga is now high allegedly due to "progress" in the center where the mercado is.  Just to prove my point if I have to  ;D, my Mom's uncle sold his property to a richer resident of Manga for 50 thousand pesos almost 10 years ago and now it is for sale for over 2 million.  Well, it's been for sale for quite sometime now. Anyway,  I couldn't believe that Manga has it's own grocery outlet already and that traffic is worst!  I am still kind of undecided whether or not I like it that way but I'd say, I think I am leaning more on wishing that we could keep our place the way it was where people are friendly (if not fighting), you can bargain for a price of a kilo of danggit, you can go to extended tindahan in the neighboring houses and ask to buy 1/2 kilo of rice because that's the only money we have; and when you go to tubig dako, the boats along the seashore are gracefully dancing to the tune of the waves and fresh air.  But I guess, progress is inevitable and just like you, I also wish that the city or the province as a whole will retain its character and beauty - it's distinctive beauty.  I want to believe that we really know - and in that I meant our provincial and city administrators (I hate to say politicians :)), what we want and that when they plan, they already have the end in mind of what Bohol or Tagbilaran should be like in, say after 5 or 10 years or beyond.

I am glad you mentioned the boulevard of Dumaguete.  I spent sleepless midnight up to morning in that place "emoting" the beauty of nature.

Hello Precious!  I am new here - barely a week or so old so I don't quite understand what's going on in here.  Did you say you are a puti.  Does that mean your primary language is English?  I wanna know so I will not speak Binol-anon here.  And did you say you are a writer? In Bohol? Which paper?

I am sorry you seem to have a bad experience with your colleagues.  Be careful next time though.

Grazie
