Chile Tribute Band Meets Journey
The Chilean Journey tribute band, Frontiers, met Journey in the lobby of the Sheraton Hotel in Santiago on February 23, just prior to Journey's concert. They've made some video available (see below) and discuss the meeting and provide photos on their website (which take a few minutes to load, so be patient). Click HERE to view them, then click on the galleria, choose the photo, and wait for it to load. Since it takes so long, we snagged a couple of photos with Arnel in them. Let's hope they don't mind.

03/08/08: First reports from Las Vegas:
Fans met Ross and Deen last night and heard they will play 4 new songs tonight. One fan said he heard 30 seconds of a song and the vocals were "jaw dropping" and sounded like Perry on Frontiers. Exciting news!

He also said Neal stopped on stage, put his guitar aside and gave Arnel a hug. Awwwwwwwwww!

The ReMax show on the 6th went really well and Arnel was outstanding. No new songs were performed, but Arnel did a wonderful version of "When You Love A Woman". As suspected, Deen sang "After The Fall". Stay tuned!

03/12/08:  Updates: Jonathan Cain interview on KNBR

Jonathan spoke on the air with the morning show on KNBR radio, a sports radio station. They began with a little musical intro called "Cain's World" especially for Jonathan. Jonathan talked about the band finishing their new album package. Their manager also manages The Eagles, and their recent success was used as a model for Journey's new package. Jonathan said they rerecorded a disc of their greatest hits paying special attention to detail on those songs, not wanting to "step all over it". They also recorded a disc of new music, and he said the package will also include a DVD from the Vegas show which will be 60 minutes long.

Jonathan talked about finding Arnel on YouTube.com after losing their "starting pitcher", their singer of eight years, Steve Augeri, who could not recover from a "throat thing" that singers often experience. He said this occurred This happened during their Def Leppard tour and Jeff Scott Soto stepped in to help them get through the tour. However, Jonathan said, the band knew that to move on they needed someone who was going to be their future and sounds like Journey is supposed to sound. He mentioned that both he and Neal were "trolling" for a new singer and found Arnel out of the blue. He talked about the problems with immigration Arnel experienced getting his visa, but said that the officer, Ben, asking Arnel to sing "Wheel In The Sky" while applying for his visa and because he sang a cappella and is such a great singer and a great guy, his visa was stamped. He said Arnel is kind of a star in Manila.

Jonathan called Arnel phenomenal, sensational and a winner. He said he's a clutch player and the future for their franchise. He talked about Arnel being very nervous for his first show in Chile which was televised and broadcast to 25 million people and how Arnel kept asking Jonathan if he could go home beforehand. He said that four shows in, Arnel is relaxed and thinks it's no big deal to record a live DVD. He talked about Neal Schon not knowing much about sports, and said Neal shreds, rides his motorcycle and looks at the internet for every bad thing someone has to say about him. Jonathan said he told Neal that was bad for his health because people write bad stuff and they have no life!

Jonathan also mentioned a song on the album that he wrote titled "What It Takes To Win" which is very different from typical Journey music. He said it's "bad to the bone" with a great hook perfect for all sports fans.

If you'd like to listen to the interview, click HERE.

just viewed the video, grabe ang reception sa audience, halos di sila pahawa-un sa stage. Congratz Arnel.

Vina del Mar, Chile (February 21, 2008) -- One word to describe JOURNEY's live concert, it is SPECTACULAR from its opening song "Separate Ways" which set the tone of the concert to the very chorused song "Lights" and "Faithfully".

Journey gave its Chile audience their best performance which in return, audience showered them with applauses, screams and very much coveted trophies, not only one but all three.

Arnel Pineda of the Phil the new lead vocals of Journey
          Congratz Arnel!

Wow!!!!! Arnel was amazing for his debut performance with Journey last night and the lucky Chilean crowd ate it up. The audience there are nicknamed "The Monster" and have a reputation of being very unforgiving. If they don't like the show, they let it be known in no uncertain terms. The audience enjoyed Journey so much that they roared for them to return to the stage. This earned them a Silver Torch award. After the first encore, the crowd still wanted more which earned Journey the Gold Torch award. The audience wanted still more and after Journey's third, and unplanned, encore, they earned the highest award this audience could give them, the Silver Seagull.

Arnel started out looking a little nervous (which was no surprise), but soon found his groove,
hitting soaring high notes, and energizing the crowd into a frenzy. His performance was so charismatic, we just can't stop watching it. "This is only the beginning", said Ross Valory. We really hope so because we need MORE!!!

On another note, clips of Journey's concert on YouTube today won the awards of "Most Watched", "Most Discussed", "Top Favourite", and "Top Rated". Wow!

Journey renowned producer Kevin Shirley recently completed a new studio album which is slated for release in July, 2008, to coincide with the beginning of the US tour. In his online diary, Shirley described the recording sessions as "wonderful, successful, stupidly creative" and said that "Sometimes you just know when there's history in the making."[16] In a statement on December 5, 2007, Shirley said "I was stunned at Arnel, who is a monster vocalist. He is the real deal. Just phenomenal."[17] When speaking about the upcoming album in a later entry in his diary, he said: "Just got back from Vegas last night, after mixing seven new Journey songs. They are outstanding... For the record, I think Arnel is 'the business!' - the guy can really sing! He handles the ballads with SO much heart, and belts the rockers as hard, and melodically, as anyone I have heard. The songs are sensational - wonderfully crafted and deep, and so focused, you may wonder where they all came from. And I'm being serious....

Apan miingon man si Arroyo nga miuswag daw atong ekonomiya? Kung milambo man ugaling, kinsa man kaha pud ang nabulahan?

Ambot giunsa nila pagdajong to. Basta ang tibuok tulay ang nahanaw pagkabuntag. Kadtong maong tulay karaan ug kon ibaligja seguradong dako ug presyo.

Our best defense is our offense. Kamo nay mag-igo kon unsay inyong defense.

Di man pud mahalin to kung iprenda. Di pud to mahimong i-garantiya para ibayad sa utang sa masyaw ug tong-its. Naa gyud buyer adto.

Naay purohan imong suga maoy isunod. Busa, hugti ang imong pagbantay karon.

Refrigerated

Far away in the north of the Philippines, the corpse of the authoritarian former President Ferdinand Marcos, who died in exile in Hawaii in 1989 after being overthrown in popular protests in 1986, lies in a refrigerated mausoleum.

For years, his wife Imelda has campaigned for his remains to be given state honours and a hero's burial in Manila.

But her husband is so discredited - and his wife so maligned in the press for her lavish lifestyle and corrupt associations - that she has little chance of ever realising her goal, say analysts.

Former WBC light flyweight champion Brian Viloria, now fighting as a flyweight, scored a big win as his comeback continued with a unanimous points decision over Cesar “Gallito” Lopez on the undercard of the “Revenge or Repeat” fight card featuring Kelly Pavlik and Jermain Taylor.

Although it may be considered somewhat of a comedown for a former world champion to fight an eight rounder, the card was so loaded with great world title fights that there was no room for Viloria. But, the fighter who traces his roots to Ilocos Sur but is nicknamed “The Hawaiin Punch” took the fight and put on an impressive performance.

All three judges had Viloria winning handily with two judges scoring it for the former champion 78-73 and the third judge 77-74.

Viloria dropped Lopez in the fifth round with a solid right but couldn’t finish the job against the durable Lopez who hasn’t been knocked out in his career with a record of 20-6-4 with 4 knockouts.

Viloria who defeated Jose Garcia Bernal last January 24 after losing a majority decision to Edgar Sosa in a battle for the vacant WBC title on April 14,2007 is reportedly eyeing a title shot at Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire but that will have to wait since Donaire is scheduled to defend his title against Australia’s Hussein Hussein in Dubai on April 18.

Lopez who is from El Paso, Texas lost a unanimous decision to Isidro Garcia in an IBA title fight on April 17, 2007 and earlier dropped a unanimous decision to Glenn Donaire , older brother of Nonito Donaire in an NABA and vacant WBO NABO flyweight title bout on May 5, 2006.

New names, fresh details should emerge from the mess once the Los Angeles Police Department bares its initial findings on the case surrounding Manny Pacquiao "forged" bank account in LA.

Jinkee Pacquiao said the investigation, which started after it was learned last week that a huge amount of money was being withdrawn from the boxer’s bank account without his knowledge, would spare no one.

"Whoever has any knowledge in what went on will be brought out by the police. The police is digging deep into the case," the boxer’s wife told The STAR Friday.

"Manny said the initial investigation should be out Monday or within the next week. I’m always in touch with Manny. We chat almost everyday and he keeps me posted," she said.

Jinkee was disappointed when news came out that over $180,000 has been withdrawn from his husband’s bank account through checks bearing Pacquiao’s forged signature.

Pacquiao opened a $200,000 account in 2006, and by the time the fraud was discovered, only $19,000 was left. Reports said close to 300 checks were used to siphon the account.

"It’s so sad because Manny trusted these people with everything. Sometimes, Manny becomes so careless. But lessons were learned. I hope we all learn from this," she added.

A couple of names have already come out of the mess, including that of Pacquiao’s personal driver in the US and his second wife. But the driver, Joseph Jose, said he had nothing to do with the mess.

"Tatamaan lahat ng puwedeng tamaan. Manny has left everything to the police. He has given them the free hand so he can concentrate on his training," a Team Pacquiao insider said.

"There’s even information that a transaction, of which the Pacman was unaware, was done using his own laptop. But this is unverified," added the source.

Whenever Pacquiao is in the US, whether it’s for a fight or any personal reason, a group of LA-based Filipinos give him company â€" wherever he goes, whatever he does.

"Jinkee wants all of them or at least most of them out this time. But it’s really up to Manny. You know Manny. Masyadong mabait," the source added.

sumpayan ko na lang Grace kanta nyo,

              Coward of the Country
                    Kenny Roger

Evryone considered him the coward of the county.
Hed never stood one single time to prove the county wrong.
His mama named him tommy, the folks just called him yellow,
But something always told me they were reading tommy wrong.

He was only ten years old when his daddy died in prison.
I looked after tommy cause he was my brothers son.
I still recall the final words my brother said to tommy:
Son, my life is over, but yours is just begun.

Promise me, son, not to do the things Ive done.
Walk away from trouble if you can.
It wont mean youre weak if you turn the other cheek.
I hope youre old enough to understand:
Son, you dont have to fight to be a man.

Theres someone for evryone and tommys love was becky.
In her arms he didnt have to prove he was a man.
One day while he was workin the gatlin boys came callin.
They took turns at becky.... there was three of them!

Tommy opened up the door and saw his becky cryin.
The torn dress, the shattered look was more than he could stand.
He reached above the fireplace and took down his daddys picture.
As his tears fell on his daddys face, he heard these words again:

Promise me, son, not to do the things Ive done.
Walk away from trouble if you can.
It wont mean youre weak if you turn the other cheek.
I hope youre old enough to understand:
Son, you dont have to fight to be a man.

The gatlin boys just laughed at him when he walked into the barroom.
One of them got up and met him halfway cross the floor.
When tommy turned around they said, hey look! ol yellows leavin.
But you coulda heard a pin drop when tommy stopped and blocked the door.

Twenty years of crawlin was bottled up inside him.
He wasnt holdin nothin back; he let em have it all.
When tommy left the barroom not a gatlin boy was standin.
He said, this ones for becky, as he watched the last one fall.
And I heard him say,

I promised you, dad, not to do the things you done.
I walk away from trouble when I can.
Now please dont think Im weak, I didnt turn the other cheek,
And papa, I sure hope you understand:
Sometimes you gotta fight when youre a man.

Evryone considered him the coward of the county

Former world boxing champion Rolando Navarette was stabbed in the neck Friday night by a tenant at the boarding house he owns in Bula, General Santos City, ABS-CBN Regional Network Group reported. The suspect used an ice pick.

Doctors said Navarette is out of danger but his condition is still being monitored. Attending physicians applied cold compress on the former boxer's wound and gave him a tetanus shot.

Despite his injury, Navarette was still able to recount the incident. The former boxer said that his tenant, Racman Saliling, suddenly attacked him right after policemen visited the boarding house.

Navarette said that the attack could have something to do with a necklace that he lent to the suspect's sister, Lily.

The sister had earlier borrowed a gold necklace from the former boxer but no longer bothered to return it.

Navarette said that he brought police along to find and arrest Saliling for the theft of the necklace. When the police failed to find the suspect at the premises, they left.

Saliling, it turned out, was only hiding and waiting for the police to leave so he could ambush Navarette.

According to police investigator Joel dela Cruz, Navarette even told them, jokingly, that the Sacliling might stab him after they leave because he (Navarette) was unarmed.

True enough, Saliling suddenly appeared and lunged at Navarette with an ice pick after the police went away.

Saliling and her sister escaped after the incident.

Navarette told ABS-CBN that he didn't know Sacliling or his sister very well, saying they never had any dispute or confrontation before the stabbbing happened. He added that he felt even worse because the stabbing happened on Valentine's Day which is his birthday as well.

Navarette was the World Boxing Council world junior lightweight champion in 1981 but later lost the title to Mexican fighter Rafael Limon.

Navarette had earned the moniker "The Bad Boy from Dadiangas" after the town he grew up in. That title rang true outside the ring as well, when the boxer was involved in several violent incidents after his career ended.

In recent years, Navarette was treated for injuries he suffered in two previous attacks. In 2005, Navarette was bludgeoned with a steel pipe by a female neighbor. In 2006, a security guard clubbed Navarette's leg with a shotgun after an altercation at a local fishport.

Thousands of protesters massed in the Makati City Friday with some hurling tomatoes at images of President Arroyo and her husband, demanding their ouster for alleged corruption.

Authorities enforced high security, with at least two light tanks, six armored cars and numerous troops arriving to reinforce soldiers already based in Manila ahead of the event, military officials said.

More than 3,000 marchers including 79-year-old former vice-president Teofisto Guingona, lawyers, nuns, priests and students marched in the city's financial district of Makati.

Some carried placards saying "guilty, guilty" while a banner displayed a caricature showing Arroyo lying on bags of cash.

An image of Arroyo and her husband with the slogan "couple in crime" emblazoned on it, was pelted with tomatoes while protesters chanted "enough is enough. Overthrow Gloria."

Another Arroyo-adorned poster proclaimed: "Moderate Your Greed."

Some workers in buildings overlooking the rally showered the protesters with confetti in a show of support.

Observers said the protest was noticeably smaller than previous rallies held in Makati, a stronghold of the anti-Arroyo opposition forces.

Many offices in Makati allowed their employees to go home early to avoid getting caught in traffic jams caused by the protest.

Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay, a leader of the opposition, charged that government forces were preventing protesters from entering the city to join the rally.

The rally was called to demand Arroyo's ouster over fresh claims that her husband and a political ally tried to gain millions of dollars in kickbacks from a telecoms deal with a Chinese firm.

The president has cancelled the 329 million-dollar national broadband network deal with China's state-run ZTE Corp. as a result of the graft allegations.

In an address to businessmen in Makati earlier in the day, Arroyo said she ordered a "thorough and transparent" probe into the corruption claims.

"We do not want to tolerate corruption. There is no room in the development of our country for wasting money on corruption when so much remains to be done to invest in the nation," she said.

Troops and armored vehicles had rushed to the Philippine capital on Friday to beef up security ahead of the protest against Arroyo.

The troops will "ensure that the socio-economic and political activities ... will continue to be unhampered," a military statement said.

The military had warned that communist insurgents could infiltrate and disrupt the rally, but opposition spokesmen have dismissed the claim as a ploy to justify tightened security.

Security officials revealed on Thursday that they recently uncovered a plot by suspected Al-Qaeda-linked Islamic militants to assassinate Arroyo, but this was unrelated to the rally at which no major political figures were present.

Renegade soldiers detained for mounting failed mutinies to topple Arroyo, declared their support for the rally, saying "now is the time to choose a new leader for the country."

Jose Maria Sison, chairman of the insurgent Communist Party of the Philippines urged the military and police to "withdraw support from the Arroyo ruling clique."

"Everything is absolutely fine and everything is definitely under control."

Have a nice day!

President Arroyo is confident she will finish her term by 2010, despite recent controversies which have revived calls for her resignation and the latest report of her security chief of an assassination plot against her.

In an interview with Reuters, the President insisted she is fulfilling her economic promises amid corruption scandals hounding her administration.

"I will finish my term because not because my opponents will allow me. I will finish my term for the simple reason that I mentioned earlier, the average Filipino wants political stability, wants economic progress, and they are getting that economic progress," said Arroyo.

The President also said she took the allegations of bribery in the scrapped ZTE-national broadband network (NBN) deal seriously.

"I take the issue very seriously, and I took steps to cancel the contract which I did, as soon as I could given the sensitivities of our diplomatic relations with our largest export markets," President Arroyo said.

President Arroyo also said that there are "two Philippines" - an economic one and a political one.

"There are like two Philippines. One is the economy, which is performing very well, and the other is the political Philippines which is less than impressive. And that's our political system, it's not the best kind of political system that we have," the President added.

Arroyo’s "worst crisis"

Two opposition lawmakers said Thursday that the scrapped ZTE-NBN deal is the "worst crisis" to hit the Arroyo administration so far.

Cagayan de Oro Rep. Rufus Rodriguez said more crimes were committed by officials implicated in the overpriced broadband deal ZTE compared to the 2005 "Hello, Garci" wiretapping scandal.

"The administration is facing its most difficult situation and will develop into a graver situation that may bring about the downfall of President Arroyo," said Rodriguez.

He added the alleged overpricing was further complicated by the abduction of star witness Rodolfo Noel "Jun" Lozada, and the ensuing cover-up attempt.

Paranaque Rep. Roilo Golez said that the ZTE issue has all the elements that could bring down the administration.

Golez cited the "Jose de Venecia factor," the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines' call for communal action, the reaction of students, as well as the statement of Vice President Noli de Castro that "those involved should be punished."

"I see a crisis building, a confluence of events that may lead to a critical mass because of so many flashpoints. If there is no damage control, there will be more problems for the administration," said Golez.

Security officials said Thursday they had uncovered a plot by Islamic militants linked to the Al-Qaeda network to assassinate President Arroyo.

Presidential Security Guards chief, Brig. Gen. Romeo Prestoza, said Mrs. Arroyo had been informed of the threat, which forced her to cancel a scheduled trip Friday to the northern resort city of Baguio.

Security forces in the Philippines were placed on full alert.

The announcement came a day a head of a major rally by political opponents of Mrs. Arroyo to demand her resignation over allegations of corruption linking the First Family.

Prestoza said the intelligence community discovered the assassination plot as early as last week.

Mrs. Arroyo's critics have been holding daily protests around Manila calling on her to resign over fresh claims that her husband and a political ally tried to get millions of dollars in kickbacks from a telecoms deal with a Chinese firm.

The 329-million-dollar deal for a national broadband network with China's state-run ZTE has since been cancelled by Mrs. Arroyo.

Prestoza said the plot was hatched by "extremists Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) and the Abu Sayyaf Group," referring to Muslim militant groups with reported links to Al-Qaeda.

"It is not just the President, there are other targets," he told reporters. "If they want to launch it, they can do it anytime."

He said the plan did not appear to be connected to the opposition rally at the Makati business district in Manila, planned for Friday.

He added that with this development Mrs. Arroyo’s security group is now studying the possibility of cancelling the other out-of-town trips of the President especially in areas where it would be hard to secure her.

Armed Forces chief General Hermogenes Esperon Jr. said news of the plan "had become the basis of our action for putting the Armed Forces of the Philippines in full state of preparedness."

He said elements composed of militants from Abu Sayyaf and Jemaah Islamiyah were also planning to hit "high-value targets" around Manila.

Both groups, which have been blamed for the worst terrorist attacks in the Philippines in recent years, are known to operate on the southern island of Mindanao.

The two groups are, however, known to field "cells" responsible for bombings around Manila in the past as well.

Intelligence reports also showed that rogue elements of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front would try to take advantage of the situation in Metro Manila and attempt to bomb key installations, the military chief said.

Esperon also denied reports that the military is discouraging people from attending Friday’s rally. He also assured that Armed Forces personnel would not participate in the street demonstration or any destabilization attempt.

Lt. Gen. Alexander Yano, commanding general of the Philippine Army, also maintained that the military would remain insulated from politics amid fresh allegations of corruption against Mrs. Arroyo’s government.

Earlier Thursday, Army spokesman Captain Carlo Ferrer cited intelligence reports that elements from the communist New People's Army (NPA) rebel group may infiltrate the ranks of protesters Friday and instigate violence.

The NPA is the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, which has been waging a Maoist rebellion since 1969.

Mrs. Arroyo's critics have been holding daily protests around Manila calling on her to resign over fresh claims that her husband and a political ally tried to get millions of dollars in kickbacks from a telecoms deal with a Chinese firm.

The $329-million deal for a national broadband network with China's state-run ZTE has since been cancelled by the President.

Some business groups have warned that the scandal could plunge the country into a new round of political instability and dampen investor confidence.

Leaders of the influential Roman Catholic Church, business leaders and even lawyers' groups have expressed support for the protest planned in the Makati business district.

The presidential palace has called for calm amid the turmoil and challenged Mrs. Arroyo's opponents to file charges in court.

On Thursday, US envoy to Manila Kristie Kenney said any protest should be put in the "framework of the constitution and the rule of law."

She, however, said the "right to public protest to express views and opinions is fundamental to all of us.

"It's important for government and for the private sectors to see that," Kenney said. With Reports from Agence France-Presse and Nadia Trinidad and Jay Ruiz, ABS-CBN News

Love Talk / History of Valentines Day
February 14, 2008, 06:33:14 AM

Every February, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. The history of Valentine's Day and its patron saint is shrouded in mystery, but we do know that February has long been a month of romance. St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, is a mix of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. February 14th was originally the Roman feast of Lupercalia, but was Christianized in memory of the martyr St. Valentine who died in 270 A.D. In the Middle Ages, Valentine became associated with the union of lovers under conditions of duress. Today the holiday is celebrated with the exchange of romantic or comic messages called "valentines."

The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. In one legend Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young, single men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured. While Valentine was in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl that visited him during his confinement. It is thought that she may have been his jailor's daughter. Before his death he wrote her a letter, which he signed 'From your Valentine,' an expression that is still used today. By the Middle Ages, Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France.

The oldest known valentine still in existence today was a poem written by Charles, Duke of Orleans to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt. The greeting, which was written in 1415, can be viewed today at the British Museum in London, England. Several years later, it is believed that King Henry V hired a writer named John Lydgate to compose a valentine note to Catherine of Valois.

In Great Britain, Valentine's Day began to be popularly celebrated around the seventeenth century. By the middle of the eighteenth century, it was common for friends and lovers in all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes. By the end of the century, printed cards began to replace written letters due to improvements in printing technology. Ready-made cards were an easy way for people to express their emotions in a time when direct expression of one's feelings was discouraged. Cheaper postage rates also contributed to an increase in the popularity of sending Valentine's Day greetings. Americans probably began exchanging hand-made valentines in the early 1700s. In the 1840s, Esther A. Howland began to sell the first mass-produced valentines in America.

According to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated one billion valentine cards are sent each year, making Valentine's Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year. Valentine's Day is celebrated in the United States, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, and Australia.
