The brothers, with Foxy. (Lauren Knight)

The lessons I learned trying to teach my child generosity

Lauren Knight, The Washington Post

My second-born son Oliver has a serious affinity for stuffed animals. He takes such tender care of them, wrapping them in blankets when it is chilly, hauling them around on errands, baby-talking them when he thinks no one else is listening, lining them up just so next to his bed, and tucking them lovingly in every single night.

That is why, when my oldest son Milo walked past a gift shop when we were out one day just the two of us, I was touched when he noted how much his brother would love the little stuffed gray fox in the window. I took him by the hand and turned him around, giddy with the thought of the lesson in store. After telling him that we could get the little gift for his brother, we headed inside. Unfortunately, the lesson didn’t go as smoothly as I had hoped.

Once inside, Milo saw something he would like to buy for himself, and asked if we could get that too. “Not this time,” I hedged, noting the look of disappointment on his face, “This time, let’s just surprise Oliver. It will mean so much to him that you thought of him.” Tears streamed down his face as he handed the money over to the baffled cashier, and we headed out, both feeling miserable and disappointed. On the car ride home, I tried my best to explain how important it was to give little gifts to the people you love, especially out of the blue, to show them how much they mean to you, how much you appreciate them. But Milo sulked in the back, focused on what he had not gotten. I had wanted desperately for him to feel that excitement and anticipation of the look of joy and surprise on his brother’s face at moment he was handed that little token of love.

When we arrived home, Milo reluctantly handed the little fox over to Oliver and muttered, “I’m glad you’re my brother,” under his breath before heading up to his room to work through the complicated emotions he was feeling. I’m afraid he missed the shear joy his brother took in accepting the gift.

Later, however, when he returned downstairs, he was inundated with praise and gratitude from Oliver, who kept repeating, “Thank you so much, Milo! I love it!” while smiling from ear to ear. I could sense a softening around Milo’s edges, and eventually I caught him smiling as he watched Oliver swaddle the cherished toy in the very same baby blanket in which I had swaddled him six years ago.

As I watched the scene unfold, a thought came to me; what if the act of giving doesn’t come naturally or easily, but instead requires practice and patience? What if our children have to acquire a taste for giving, much like they acquire their taste for a particular vegetable through repeated exposure to its flavor and texture? Should we set our children up to experience how it feels to be generous, or should we let them come to it on their own?

It is true that giving gifts can help strengthen relationships among siblings. Studies on human behavior by psychologists, anthropologists, economists, and marketers all find that gift-giving is a “surprisingly complex and important part of human interaction, helping to define relationships and strengthen bonds with family and friends.” And it is the giver, not the recipient, who experiences the biggest psychological rewards from the exchange. The gift giver experiences positive changes in brain chemistry, an increase in endorphins and a feeling of euphoria during and after giving a gift. According to Jeffrey Froh, Psy.D., of Hofstra University, and Giacomo Bono, Ph.D., helping others and being generous are essential for creating grateful, connected children. Feeling connected to those they are helping leads them to develop and value social relationships. Within a family, where siblings often compete with each other for attention, such connections are essential for healthy family life.

So what are the secrets to creating a positive giving experience for our children? It may have more to do with choice than I had originally thought.

Research by Netta Weinstein and Richard Ryan found that college students reported higher levels of happiness on days that they had done something helpful or kind for others, but only when those actions felt self-chosen. Such self-chosen prosocial acts can even be seen in brain scans, according to a study at the University of Oregon; the reward centers of the brain were activated during the act of giving money, but turned out to be considerably greater when the person giving viewed the act as a choice rather than a mandatory charitable action.

One way to broach this issue with a child would be to say, “It is your choice whether or not you give your brother this gift,” rather than, “I really think you should give your brother this gift.” Making such a choice also ensures that the giver will feel a stronger sense of connection to the receiver, which is the whole point, after all.

That’s not to say that providing opportunities to think of others and to be charitable should always come directly from the source. If given the choice, most young children would choose to gift a desired item to themselves rather than others. It is part of their psychological and developmental nature to be a bit selfish, and we as parents should never make them feel guilty for this.

However, I’m willing to bet that with a little encouragement and a little practice, we can teach our children to be more giving, and in doing so, expose them to the wonderful benefits of generosity. And as such a skill will last them well into adulthood, transferring into many different relationships, it’s one taste worth acquiring.

Drug suspects slain
November 25, 2015

BITE THE DUST. Drug personality, Kent Animas, and a buddy, Reynan Corporal, end up getting killed after messing with police officers. Animas and Corporal wounded a member of the Motorcycle Anti-Street Crime Unit (MASCU) who pursued them for engaging in a robbery with violence and intimidation, and challenged the high-profile reinforcement team to a chase up to their hide out in Barangay Tiptip. Animas and Corporal tried to open fire at the approaching police team, but the latter’s sharp shooters outsmarted them.

A drug personality who has been out on bail was killed along with his robbery buddy during a shootout Monday morning in barangay Tiptip, Tagbilaran City.

Police identified the slain persons as one Kent Animas and Renan Corporal who had been hunted down by city cops after being tagged in a robbery.

A team from the city police station responded to a report of robbery that transpired at around 10 a.m. on November 23 at Berama Bulding in barangay Dao.

Getting a tip from a concerned citizen, the cops were able to track down the two in a rented house in barangay Tiptip at around 11 a.m.

However, Animas and Corporal tried to shoot the cops, prompting the responding police team to shoot them.

Two other men were seen fleeing the area while the cops were clearing the area.

The responding police team recovered sachets of shabu, firearms and ammunitions from the house occupied by the slain men.

The investigation showed that at 10:12 a.m. on Monday, the city police station received a call from a concerned citizen regarding a robbery at Berama Building along Lara St. at sitio Lanao in Barangay Dao.

The Tactical Operation Center of the city police station dispatched all units to proceed to the incident area.

Upon receiving the information, PO3 Rex Aranjuez, a member of the Motorcycle Anti-Street Crime Unit (MASCU), immediately proceeded to the area.

Aranjuez said that while he was at the area, he saw a motorcycle which driver and backrider wearing black jacket matched the description on the suspects in the robbery incident.

He followed them, and when they were already side by side on the road, he asked the one driving the other motorcycle to stop.

However, instead of stopping, the backrider shot him.

Aranjuez pursued them towards the direction to Barangay Tiptip.

He later felt his left thigh became numb, and realized he was hit.

Aranjuez decided to call the city police station to request for reinforcement.

In response, chief of policeâ€"PSupt. George Valeâ€"pulled a team with him, together with intelligence operatives, the Quick Reaction Team, and elements of the Provincial Intelligence Branchâ€"led by police provincial director, PSSupt. Dennis Agustin, and PSInsp. Jojit Mananquilâ€"conducted a joint hot pursuit operation in Barangay Tiptip.

The team then received tip from a civilian at purok 48 in Barangay Tiptip that they saw two men riding a motorcycle, the driver was wearing a black jacket and his backrider was carrying a firearm.

According to the information, the two men were moving fast along a private road heading to an apartment.

The police team proceeded to the area and saw the two men, each carrying a firearm while outside the apartment.

When the armed men saw the approaching police team, they immediately pointed their gun at the cops.

The cops then drew their firearms and shot the two men.

While securing the area, the cops saw two other men fleeing from the area.

After having secured the area, the police team communicated with the forensic investigators from the Bohol Provincial Laboratory (Scene of the Crime Operatives).

The SOCO team, led by PSupt. Pinky Acog recovered a black .22 caliber Magnum Black Widow revolver with five cartridges, one .357 Magnum revolver without serial number with six cartridges, one .38 caliber snub-nose revolver with five cartridges, one 9mm cartridge case, seven .38 caliber cartridges, one .45 caliber cartridge, one heat-sealed transparent cellophane sachet containing crystalline substance, a black Honda Wave with plate number GC 64047, a black Honda XRM with plate number 7925YD, cash amounting to P34,000, and two gold necklace.

The slain persons were then later identified as Kent Animas, married, and Reynan Corporalâ€"both residents of Barangay Dipatlong, Maribojoc.

Both sustained gunshot wounds in the head.

In an interview with the relatives and the administrator of the apartment, the police investigator learned that the suspects rented a room at the apartment earlier this month.

Further investigation showed that the robbery victim, Noel Bayron, a 28-year-old resident of Barangay San Isidro, Mabini, single, had laceration on his right forearm and bruises on the abdomen.

On the other hand, PO3 Aranjuez was treated at the Holy Name Medical Center for the gunshot wound he sustained from the incident.

Animas and Corporal had also been tagged as members of a drug syndicate.

Animas was arrested during a raid in their residence in Maribojoc in September last year, but his brother, Tyrone Animas, who was one of the subjects of the raid managed to flee then.

Both Tyrone and Kent Animas were charged of drug cases, but Kent had posted bail.

Tyrone Animas had also eluded arrest during a buy-bust operation 14 days later at Palma St., this city.

Tyrone Animas was, however, arrested after less than a week when the cops tracked him down with one of his buddies in one of the resorts in Tagbilaran City but only after a chase when they tried to swim their way to the pier area.

World Daily News / Re: Four Shocking Truths about ISIS

What Happens When Extremists Take Power

Stephen M. Walt, a professor of International Affairs at the Harvard Kennedy School, explains this phenomenon in Foreign Affairs magazine. He writes …

“To many who have witnessed its brutal tactics and religious extremism, the Islamic State seems uniquely baffling and unusually dangerous. According to its leaders’ own statements, the group wants to eliminate infidels, impose sharia worldwide, and hasten the return of the Prophet. The Islamic State’s foot soldiers have pursued these goals with astonishing cruelty.

“Yet … the Islamic State has also sought to build the rudiments of a genuine state in the territory it controls. It has established clear lines of authority, tax and educational systems, and a sophisticated propaganda operation. … ISIS is a country now.”

The first time in history that terrorists have created a country? Not at all â€" the second shock to most observers.

“The group” Walt continues, “is strikingly similar in many ways to the regimes that emerged during the Russian, Chinese, Cuban, Cambodian, and Iranian revolutions. These movements were as hostile to prevailing international norms as the Islamic State is, and they also used ruthless violence to eliminate or intimidate rivals and demonstrate their power to a wider world.

“Revolutions replace an existing state with a new one based on different political principles. These upheavals are usually led by a vanguard party or rebel group, such as the Bolsheviks in Russia, the Communist Party in China, the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, or Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and his followers in Iran.

“Sometimes, a revolutionary movement overthrows the regime on its own; other times, it exploits a power vacuum after the old order has collapsed for other reasons. …

“Revolutionary organizations portray their opponents as evil, hostile, and incapable of reform. Compromise is therefore impossible, which means the old order must be uprooted and replaced.

“Vladimir Lenin and the Bolsheviks insisted that only a thoroughgoing revolution could eliminate capitalism’s inherent evils, and Mao Zedong told his followers, ‘The imperialists will never lay down their butcher knives.’ Khomeini thought likewise about the shah, instructing his followers to ‘squeeze his neck until he is strangled.’

“The Islamic State is no different. Its leaders and ideologues portray the West as innately hostile and existing Arab and Muslim governments as heretical entities contrary to Islam’s true nature. Compromise with such infidels and apostates makes no sense; they must be eliminated and replaced by leaders following what the Islamic State regards as true Islamic principles.

“Revolutionary organizations preach that victory is inevitable, provided supporters remain obedient and steadfast. Lenin argued that capitalism was doomed by its own contradictions, and Mao described imperialists as ‘paper tigers,’ both thereby reassuring their followers that the revolution would eventually triumph.

“The Islamic State’s current leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, offered a similarly upbeat assessment in November 2014, telling his audience, ‘Your state is well and in the best of conditions. Its advance will not cease.’

“Leaders of revolutionary movements usually see their model as universally applicable. Once victorious, they promise their followers, the revolution will liberate millions, create a more perfect world, or fulfill some divinely ordained plan. … Khomeini and his followers saw the revolution in Iran as the first step toward the abolition of the ‘un-Islamic’ nation-state system and the establishment of a global Islamic community.

“In the same way, the Islamic State’s leaders believe that their fundamentalist message applies to the entire Muslim world and beyond. In July 2014, for example, Baghdadi declared that the Islamic State would one day unite ‘the Caucasian, Indian, Chinese, Shami [Syrian], Iraqi, Yemeni, Egyptian, Maghribi [North African], American, French, German, and Australian'”

This is a key reason why the Islamic State uses social media to spread its message. This is why it’s so quick to claim credit for violent acts such as the recent downing of Russia’s Metrojet Flight 9268 over the Sinai, the recent bombing of Beirut and the terrorist attacks in Paris. And this is also why it has released a series of new propaganda videos, threatening Washington, New York and beyond.

“The problem,” writes Walt, “is that revolutions create great uncertainty, which in turn fosters miscalculation. For one thing, outsiders often have little direct contact with the new regime, so they cannot gauge its true intentions and level of resolve or clearly communicate their own redlines. Few outsiders have met with the Islamic State’s top leaders, for example, so it remains mysterious what they really believe and how resolute they will prove to be. …

“Europeans and Americans obsessed about the spread of Bolshevism after 1917 and otherwise sensible people succumbed to McCarthyism in the 1950s.

“To make matters even more confusing, revolutions also generate a flood of refugees fleeing the new regime. Eager to persuade foreign powers to help them return home, exiles typically offer lurid accounts of the new state’s crimes (which may well be true) while suggesting the new regime can be easily defeated. …

“Russian, Chinese, Cuban, Iranian, and Nicaraguan exiles made such claims to convince foreign powers to intervene in their home countries, but governments who took their advice usually came to regret it.

“Ironically, the uncertainties that accompany most revolutions can sometimes help the new state survive. … In Iraq, Saddam Hussein mistakenly believed that the fall of the shah had left Iran open to attack, but when his forces invaded the country in 1980, the clerical regime mobilized new sources of military power, such as the Revolutionary Guard, and turned the tide of battle in Iran’s favor.

“It is also impossible to know for certain whether a revolution will be contagious, but there is usually some reason to fear it might be. Revolutionary states’ ambitions inevitably strike sympathetic chords abroad and convince some number of foreign sympathizers to flock to their banner. … Westerners such as the Harvard-educated social activist John Reed journeyed to Russia following the Bolshevik Revolution. Such reverberations reinforce fears of contagion. …

“At the same time, just as with past revolutionary movements, efforts to defeat the Islamic State have been undermined by opponents’ conflicting priorities.

“Both the United States and Iran want to see the end of the Islamic State, but neither country wants to help the other gain influence in Iraq. Turkey also views the group as a threat, but it loathes the Assad regime in Syria and opposes any actions that might strengthen Kurdish nationalism. Saudi Arabia, for its part, sees the Islamic State’s fundamentalist ideology as a challenge to its own legitimacy, but it fears Iranian and Shiite influence as much, if not more.

“As a result, none of these countries has made defeating the Islamic State its top priority. Its penchant for violence and use of sexual slavery notwithstanding, there is little that is novel about the Islamic State. Its basic character and impact are strikingly similar to those of earlier revolutionary states. We have seen this movie many times before.”

My view: It all leads to a single conclusion: Contrary to what the Obama Administration hoped last year, the Islamic State will not die a sudden death, the victim of its own brutality. And contrary to what most in the West may hope today, it will not be easily contained by stepped up security or promptly destroyed by more bombings.

Rather, the reality on the ground in Mosul, the rapid spread of the Islamic State globally, and the sophistication of its recent terrorist attacks are all evidence of a scourge that’s going to be around for a long time and get a lot worse.

The Islamic State is at war with the world; and the world is at war with the Islamic State. It is the Islamic State War.

What Will Happen Next?

Some, like Walt, argue that the more the West steps up its attacks against the Islamic State, the more it will legitimize their extremist ideology … and the more it facilitates their global recruitment of jihadists. This is true. And this is what will happen.

But others argue, with equal strength, that the more we turn a blind eye to this new country’s horrific brutality, the more powerful and dangerous it will become. This is also true. And this will also happen.

How this debate will be resolved is itself very debatable. But both opinions point unanimously to the same conclusion I just gave you. No matter which path the West chooses â€" more attacks or more neglect â€" the same four shocking realities prevail:

1. The Islamic State is a country.

2. It’s digging in and not going away â€" much like other revolutionary movements in the past that have lasted for many decades.

3. The Islamic State War is spreading and escalating.

4. We are facing a kind of World War III.

For investors, the consequences are both big and immediate:

1. The Islamic State War is now the world’s most powerful driver of flight capital to safe havens.

2. The money is fleeing from regions that are most directly impacted by the turmoil, especially the Middle East and Europe. And it’s rushing, in a series of tidal waves, to the markets least impacted by the turmoil â€" mostly the United States.

3. This helps explain why the U.S. stock market has enjoyed so much strength despite so much bad news on the economic front. And it also helps explain why it’s the highest quality, largest and most stable U.S. stocks that have been going up the most.

It also tells us these trends are likely to continue, but always accompanied by extreme high risk.

Stay safe.

Good luck and God bless!

Whether the goal is to contain or destroy the Islamic State … whether the West launches one thousand bombing raids or ten thousand … whether Russia is opposed or aligned … and no matter who’s in power in Damascus or Baghdad … until this reality is recognized and addressed, the Islamic State will continue to grow and spread.

It will continue to dig its roots in a country that’s already larger than England.

Its revolutionary zeal will continue to electrify the masses of unemployed, disaffected youth in the Muslim world â€" and beyond.

Its global attacks will continue to spread with increasing sophistication and destructive power.

That’s the first shocking â€" and little known â€" truth about the Islamic State. But there’s more

The Islamic State as a Country

The Islamic State is not just a global revolutionary movement. It’s a country. It has a functional government, complete with Ministries of Education, Culture, Justice, Transportation, Energy and more.

Mosul, despite Islamic State rule, remains a bustling metropolis on the Tigris River with Iraq’s second largest university.
Mosul, which has been controlled by the Islamic State since June 10, 2014, is a modern, bustling metropolis larger than Philadelphia.

And here’s what’s so worrisome: Despite some grumbling and resistance, life in Mosul has taken on all the trappings of a new normal â€" on the streets and outdoor cafes; in schools, offices and factories.

Yes, in the early days of the Islamic State’s conquest last year, grandiose displays of military prowess and violence dominated city life. But now those are mostly gone and street life has taken on an air of regularity, even calm.

Its university, where Hamid teaches, remains one of the largest educational centers in the Middle East.

Electronic Engineering College, Mosul, Iraq.
Last year, the Islamic State authorities shut it down and Hamid was temporarily out of work. But a few months later, they reopened it with thoroughly revised Islamic curriculums for the College of Medicine, College of Sciences, College of Electronic Engineering, College of Arts, College of Law, College of Administration and Economy, and many more.

All schools in Mosul were closed for two quarters and then reopened with an extremist revolutionary curriculum.
Despite the hardships, he’s glad to have his job back, relieved his courses continue to exist.

The new government did the same with the city’s public schools, the local government counsels and departments, offices of private companies, and factories â€" brutally and consistently imposing an extremist revolutionary ideology.

Nevertheless, men drive to work in the morning. They go home to their families in the evening. They go to mosque on Friday. And they take their children to weekend outings by the Tigris River.

People struggle with power outages, as they did before the Islamic State. But they grumble less; complaints and resistance are promptly and severely punished. The crime rate has plunged.

Moreover, the majority Sunni population has largely accepted â€" and some have even welcomed â€" the new order.

This isn’t just Hamid’s version of the on-the-ground reality. It’s also corroborated by other sources.

One Mosul resident reports that “ISIS, with all its brutality, is more honest and merciful than the Shia government in Baghdad and its militias.”

Another told The Wall Street Journal “I have not in 30 years seen Mosul this clean, its streets and markets this orderly.”

Nor is this just a superficial veneer.

It goes to the heart of everything
that’s dead wrong about the
West’s theories, tactics and plans.

World Daily News / Four Shocking Truths about ISIS
November 23, 2015, 10:33:48 PM
If you think you’ve heard all the worst horrors about the Islamic State, think again.

There are other shocking truths that few outside of their controlled territories know about, some of which will have major consequences for American investors and the entire world.

Consider my friend Hamid, a 32-year-old Sunni Muslim, who teaches engineering in Mosul, the largest city in the world that’s controlled by the Islamic State.

I first met Hamid online in the summer of 2009, exactly five years before the Islamic State conquered his city in 2014.

He and I had just joined a Web platform for exchanging foreign languages and culture, and we talked via Skype regularly. In the following year, I helped him apply online for a Master’s program at a German university. But he missed getting in by a hair and eventually decided instead to settle down in Mosul, get married and start a family.

But now, with ISIS in control, he’s trapped. No one is allowed to leave. He can’t even get his sick father out of town for urgently needed surgery. And the horrors of life in Mosul under the Islamic State are well known:

Male adulterers are thrown from high buildings; females, stoned to death.

A widowed and impoverished mother of four recently told the Guardian she had her hand chopped off for stealing.

Even small infractions like smoking cigarettes are punished by public floggings.

Christianity is punishable by death. Thousands belonging to religious minorities have been raped and massacred. Even children in Mosul have been subjected to the same fate.

But what’s not well known is the environment under Islamic State that Hamid has been describing to me in recent months. In an ironic twist of fate, his stories can be even more frightening than some of the horrors …

It’s late November, and so it’s only fitting to have a post about gratitude. I have talked about gratitude quite often on this blog throughout the years. Gratitude is one of the most important emotions we feel in this life. Let’s be honest here, with all that is going on in the world right now, it can be really easy to fall into a negative slump, leaving us feeling helpless or even worse, hopeless. This is when gratitude comes in and really saves the day. Whether we can see it in the moment or not, there is always something to be thankful for. It is gratitude that can bring us out of the darkest of times, and help us to find the silver lining again. In the spirit of the holiday season, and focusing on the theme of gratitude, this week’s blog is intended to help you give thanks now and throughout the year.

Wake up in the morning and say thank you. We are never promised another day of life. How lucky are we to wake up and have another chance to live in love.
Be present so that you can notice the good. Sometimes we get caught up in the thoughts in our head and miss the good that is actually happening in the now. Live in the present moment so you can be aware of the positive happenings around you.
Take a gratitude inventory daily. If you are struggling to find the good stuff in life, I encourage you to make an effort to write down what you are grateful for, every single day. This is a sure fire way to bring yourself back to that thankful, positive place. Gratitude lists don’t have to be grandiose. They can be as simple as being thankful for air to breathe, food to eat, or even a smile from a stranger.
Notice the little things, for they are the big things. Stemming from the gratitude inventory, remember sometimes the smallest gestures can make the biggest impact. Maybe you don’t need a fancy yacht or mansion to feel gratitude, but the kindness from loved ones and a feeling of purpose to experience the sense of gratitude. Positive little things are just as meaningful as the “big” things.
Reframe setbacks as an opportunity to learn and grow. Life can be hard. Life is difficult. We all know this. Don’t dwell in difficulty or despair. Reorganize the situation and think of how you can look at it differently. How can you bring love to a situation that is currently low vibe? This will bring you back to a more peaceful, grateful place.
I hope these gratitude tools are helpful! Remember, be the expression of gratitude that you wish to see. Your thoughts and energy are contagious. What are you spreading in your community and to the world? If we want the world to have more gratitude, it must start with gratitude in our own hearts. I am so grateful for every single one of you and the amazing work you do in the world! Let’s keep the gratitude train going! Comment below on what you are grateful for!

Love and gratitude,
Michelle

The supposed bomb that Islamic State's magazine claims brought down a Russian passenger jet in Egypt last month. Photo: EPA
Islamic State's official magazine carried a photo on Wednesday of a Schweppes drink can it said was used to make an improvised bomb that brought down a Russian airliner over Egypt's Sinai Peninsula last month, killing all 224 people on board.

The photo showed a can of Schweppes Gold soft drink and what appeared to be a detonator and switch on a blue background, three simple components that if genuine are likely to cause concern for airline safety officials worldwide.

"The divided Crusaders of the East and West thought themselves safe in their jets as they cowardly bombarded the Muslims of the Caliphate," the English-language Dabiq magazine said in reference to Russia and the West. "And so revenge was exacted upon those who felt safe in the cockpits."

i am a real person. i do not hide in the anonymity of the internet. i'm telling my story in the hope that i can inspire someone. that life is full of hope. all these things i'm writing about happened to me. from being a poor boy in maribojoc, now i am living comfortably here in the states, making my living as a DAY TRADER. good day traders earn an average of $5000 to $10,000 in one day. i even have a friend who makes more than $100,000 a day. i am not a good trader. i only earn a few hundred dollars a day trading. sometimes when i am lucky, i make a thousand dollars. i made more than a million dollars from JAZZ thru investing, not trading.

General Topic / Re: how to rob a bank
November 20, 2015, 07:47:32 PM
Knowing this, the Honduran government reasoned that it was likely that property in the U.S. belonging to the Honduran businessman’s family would be seized by the U.S. authorities. They concluded that if this happened, the businessman’s local bank might not be able to meet its commitments, angering a lot of local depositors who are also voters (or government officials).

So to get a jump on the process, so to speak, the Honduran government seized the bank before the U.S. government could get their hands on related property. It was a preemptive raid, not based on any proven violation of Honduran or U.S. law, but rather on the knowledge that if they didn’t act first, the Yankees would. It’s like a scene in a Western movie where one set of robbers races another to catch up with the stagecoach.

You might think this is a sui generis case, shaped by the U.S.’ peculiar asset forfeiture practices. Maybe so … but the underlying logic behind Honduras’ action has recently been globalized.

One Global Tax System, But Many Governments

Here’s why: The G-20 recently adopted a global financial-information-exchange protocol, inspired by the U.S.’ Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA). Over the next few years, financial institutions everywhere will be sucked into a web of reporting designed to ensure that nobody can keep money secret from any government. Whether they like it or not, banks will have to hand over client information to their own governments, who will then share it with others.

It’s easy to see how that will make tax enforcement easier. But it may also result in some nasty unintended consequences along the lines of the Honduras case.

If the G-20 data-sharing plan works as planned, government officials everywhere will be able to monitor changes in the offshore financial holdings of local individuals or businesses. This sort of intelligence could trigger precisely the sort of preemptive strikes that took place in Honduras. A big local business is losing money in its overseas operations? Better grab its local assets now, before a foreign court can seize them as part of a bankruptcy proceeding. Ditto for individuals.

The bottom line here is that, as always, government action â€" the G-20 reporting web â€" will create a new set of incentives that will have unpredictable consequences. The only thing we can be sure of is that government will look after its interests … not yours.

The world of offshore finance is becoming more complex. That’s why it is absolutely critical that you have an inside guide to the most recent developments … so you can stay one step ahead of the government thieves.

Kind regards,

A few weeks ago, the government of Honduras seized the property of one of the country’s leading businessmen â€" including the bank his family owned. The bank was liquidated, leaving over 200,000 local and foreign clients in the lurch.

Seizures and forced liquidations aren’t uncommon, of course. Courts all over the world order such things all the time when individuals or organizations are convicted of crimes. What made the Honduran case unusual is that there was no court, no trial and no crime.

You see, a relative of the Honduran businessman in question had been arrested in the U.S., where extrajudicial asset forfeiture is practiced.

In the Land of the Free, federal, state and local authorities can and do seize all sorts of property on just about any pretext, simply by asserting that the property (a car, a house, a farm, cash, etc.) is somehow associated with a crime. They don’t have to prove this â€" their own say-so is all they need. The owner of the seized property doesn’t have to be guilty of anything, or even be charged with a crime. Instead, he or she has to prove that the property isn’t “guilty.” Most of these owners never manage to come up with the money, time or other resources needed to do so. So they lose their property, which is usually sold for profit or used by the government.

“What’s the best way to rob a bank? Start one.”

Many people have heard that old saw. But it’s no longer accurate. The best way to rob a bank is to control a government … any old government will do these days.

It wasn’t always like that. You see, for most of modern history, governments knew to keep their hands off banks. Whether led by kings, prime ministers, presidents or dictators, states understood that the first time they raided a private bank for loot would be the last. Bankers would close up shop and go somewhere else, and the next time the rulers needed to borrow some cash, there would be no lenders left in town.

My, how times have changed! Not only do modern governments feel perfectly free to steal from banks … they actively compete with each other to do so.

By 2020, total planned floor space is 13.6 million square feet.

Once it’s complete, it will be the second largest building by volume. It will only be slightly smaller the Boeing’s Everett, Washington, plant, which is the world’s largest building by volume.

The Tesla Gigafactory is shown under construction outside Reno, Nevada May 9, 2015. Picture taken May 9, 2015. REUTERS/James Glover II

Currently, the factory is 71 feet tall and stretches for more than 5.5 million square feet, or the equivalent of 126 acres.

To put that into perspective, that is more than 95 football fields. It’s so big, in fact that, Musk even gets blown away when he visits the plant.

“It will blow your mind. You see it in person and then realize, F---, this is big," Musk recently told Fast Company.

#1948

The factory is located in Storey County, Nevada on a 3,000 acre lot of land.

The original site was 1,000 acres, but in June 2015, the company purchased an additional 1,864 acres of adjacent land.

The purchase will enable the company to expand the size of the factory by 50 or 100 times, Musk has said.

Elon Musk has lofty ambitions for Tesla during the next few years.

By 2017, the company aims to begin production of its more affordable Model 3. And by 2020 it plans to ramp up production to build as many as 500,000 vehicles per year, an ambitious goal considering the company currently only produces about 50,000 vehicles a year.

For any of this to be possible, though, Tesla must first complete its Gigafactory, a giant battery plant appropriately located in Sparks, Nevada on Electric Avenue.

While the plant isn't expected to be complete until next year, Tesla and Musk have already revealed quite a few details about the factory that are pretty mind blowing.

Here’s a look at the 12 most incredible facts that have been revealed about the Gigafactory so far.

International hacking collective Anonymous declared war this weekend on ISIS, the extremist militant group that claimed responsibility for the attacks in Paris on November 13 which killed 129 people and left another approximately 350 injured.

In a video released Saturday, a French-speaking member of Anonymous warns ISIS to "expect numerous cyber attacks." Here's the video in question:

[Sorry I dont know how to copy videos.]

But what are the "cyberattacks" in question? What kind of damage can an online force do to an organization it wants to attack? Since the Anonymous video doesn't spell it out, we've gathered up some common tactics used by the group in the past, as well as those used by other major hacker collectives.

Release of private information: retrieval and dissemination of information considered private by ISIS.

Perhaps most impactful of all, Anonymous could outright access the private networks of ISIS and disseminate battle plans, operative names, and countless other pieces of vital information that assists in military action. There's no doubt that world governments are already attempting this themselves, though a hacking collective with a bone to pick may apply methods that are outside of what world governments (and international laws) consider respectable behavior.

"Doxxing" members: revealing personal, private information about members of ISIS.

Another popular attack method used by hacking collectives is "doxxing": the act of releasing personal, private information of specific people, often private citizens. In the case of a group like ISIS, this tactic could be used to expose the personal information of those involved in terrorist activity. This is the kind of information-based warfare that hacking collectives specialize in, which has ripple effects beyond the act itself.

Information obtained from "doxxing" is often distributed via anonymous, publicly accessible channels like the website Pastebin, or internet forums like 4chan.

"DDoS" attacks: flooding servers with information requests.

A "DDoS" attack is a way of flooding a computer system with far more requests for information than it can handle, thus shutting it down altogether. The acronym's definition goes a long way in describing what it does: "distributed denial-of-service."

Hackers, employing massive quantities of "virtual" machines â€" programs acting as full-on computers â€" request data en masse from a network. When that network is overrun with requests, it shuts down, making it unusable for everyone.

Anonymous has successfully used this method in the past for shutting down the computer networks of companies or organizations it deems fit for attack, from The Church of Scientology to the municipal computer system of Ferguson, Missouri (in the wake of the shooting death of Michael Brown).

Hack accounts: Take over social media accounts used by ISIS.

This one may be the most obvious weapon in a hacker collective's arsenal: outright hacking of social media accounts. There are a variety of ways that hackers can take over social media accounts, from social engineering (calling Twitter/Facebook/etc. and pretending to be the account's owner) to side doors (using password retrieval of separate, connected accounts to access social media accounts).

Since ISIS is notorious for using social media to recruit new members, this is a likely course of action for Anonymous.

"Google Bomb" / "Googlewashing" searchable terms with links to anti-ISIS websites.

Ever try searching former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum's last name on Google? Go right ahead. We'll wait.

Notice that the first thing that comes up isn't Rick Santorum's Wikipedia entry, or his personal website, but a page explaining the neologism behind the word that was once his last name. This is the very definition of "Google Bombing" someone: linking en masse to an alternative definition to impact the Google results that come up when someone searches that word.

Google searches, to some extent, depend on users to define where search terms will send them â€" more simply, the more websites that return the same information fundamentally alter the search results. If an overwhelming number of websites and users redefine search terms like "ISIS recruiting" (for example), that could seriously impact the group's ability to easily recruit new members.

Prank calls: flood ISIS phone networks with spam phone calls.

Sounds silly, right? How 1990s!

But it was revealed just today that ISIS has a help desk staffed by senior operatives who specialize in encrypted communications. This is exactly the kind of target that a method like mass prank calls (accomplished by digital services â€" "virtual" phones, if you will) could take down. The concept behind Anonymous' cyberattacks are to disrupt ISIS' ability to operate, thus cripping its ability to perpetrate terrorist acts.

Anonymous declares ‘war’ on ISIS
Dave Smith

The international activist group Anonymous has declared “war” on ISIS, the extremist militant group that claimed responsibility for the deadly attacks in Paris over the weekend.

Anonymous posted a video to YouTube on Saturday. In the video, a person wearing a Guy Fawkes mask, who claims to represent Anonymous, said the group intends to hunt down the members of ISIS, adding “we will find you, and we will not let you go.”

“We will launch the biggest operation ever against you,” Anonymous said. “Expect massive cyber attacks.”

As for what Anonymous plans to do exactly, that’s uncertain. But Anonymous could disrupt ISIS’s communications (via social media and other websites) through distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, or it could try hacking ISIS computers to share the identities of its members. For as long as the group has existed, Anonymous has operated almost exclusively online and has done most its work through hacking and these DDoS attacks.

Anonymous’s video against ISIS has been watched nearly a million times on YouTube. The hacktivist collective created a similar video after Charlie Hebdo, the satirical French magazine, was attacked by terrorists in January. Around that time, the group started taking down extremist websites and running social media campaigns against the terrorist organization.

“The French people are stronger than you and will come out of this atrocity even stronger,” Anonymous said in its newest video.

Basketball | NBA-PBA / support for paris
November 17, 2015, 05:00:07 AM

KEVIN SERAPHIN WEARS HIS SUPPORT FOR PARISNovember 15, 2015  ·  12:14 PM ET

ALL BALL NERVE CENTER â€" While the recent terror attacks in Paris were a shocking occurrence to everyone, spurring shows of support from around the NBA, they resonated in a uniquely personal way with the NBA players who have ties to the French capital.
Knicks center Kevin Seraphin, for instance, was born in French Guiana but moved to Paris when he was 16, and now lives there during the NBA offseason. Seraphin considers Paris his adopted hometown, and on Friday as the attacks were unfolding, Seraphin told Yahoo that it all still was hard to comprehend…
“It’s kind of sad, because… there’s nothing you can do about it,” said Seraphin who played for the French national Olympic team in 2012. “Think about how some people went to see a soccer game and went to see a [concert] and you don’t really expect that. It’s just scary, now people are scared to go out and just do anything. I couldn’t believe… killing us as a human. For sure, we don’t want to see people living like that.”
Seraphin said he was too young and too detached to understand the affect the 9/11 attacks had on New York and the United States, but Paris has now dealt with two traumatic situations in the past 11 months. Last January, 12 people were killed during a terrorist attack at the Paris satirical publication, Charlie Hebdo, and Seraphin â€" then, still a member of the Wizards â€" honored the victims by wearing a shirt that read, “Je suis Charlie” â€" French for “I am Charlie” â€" before a win against Chicago.
“I’m scared that this is starting to be often,” he said. “At one point, just like, I live in Paris. You don’t want that to start to be something that happens every two months. If you don’t feel safe anymore in the country like you want, you don’t want to be there, so it’s kind of sad. It’s really sad.”
Today, for the Knicks game against the New Orleans Pelicans, Seraphin showed up with his support for Paris on display for everyone to see…

Fox TV Series Plants A Seed For Lucifer
As A Charming Friend Of Mankind
And Victim Of A Tyrant God

Tell Fox: Be Gone LUCIFER!

Dear Mr. Econg,

The malice of Lucifer is such that he has always wanted to be not only known, but worshipped as God is worshipped, by angels and men. He even tempted Our Lord to worship him!

Our words and efforts should echo the response of Christ Himself:  “Be gone, Satan: the Lord thy God shalt thou adore, and Him alone shalt thou serve!” (Matt. 4:10)

Now, see how Fox TV seems to plan to help Lucifer appeal to weak modern humanity  in their scheduled series “Lucifer” for January, 2016.
Fox’s online “About The Show” presents the devil as “charming, charismatic and devilishly handsome.”
In the show â€" Lucifer refers to God like this: “Hey, he’s my father, not yours. I can say whatever I want about the guy. I quit Hell because I was sick and tired of playing a part in Dad’s plan. I believe in free will, not the tyranny of all his predestination hoo-ha.”
Lucifer continues: “Thank you! But I’ve been doing a fair amount of thinking. Do you think I’m the devil because I’m inherently evil or simply because dear ol’ Dad decided I was? Is this a classic case of labeling? What do you think?”
The film is quite demonic in its subtlety. In a nightclub, clips show plenty of gyrating, scantily clad dancers, sexual innuendos, glorify a party lifestyle, and portray Lucifer as a fun loving young man while God and his angel Amenadiel are no fun at all and don’t relate to modern man.

Like St. Michael, make no compromises with evil. PROTEST To FOX NOW

Not too long ago we protested the opening of a Luciferian church in Texas and now this TV show.

We will not allow Fox TV or anyone to get our children used to Lucifer

PROTEST FOX TV NOW

Our Divine Redeemer Himself spoke of the devil like this: "He was a murderer from the beginning, and has nothing to do with the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks according to his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies" (John 8, 44).

The devil is a murderer and the father of lies, the liar par excellence, who hates truth, because truth leads to God.

Do NOT Let Fox TV Bring Lucifer To America

PROTEST To FOX NOW

I asked one of my associates here at America Needs Fatima to investigate this diabolical maneuver to make Lucifer seem harmless.

Here’s what he found how Fox’s upcoming January TV series will portray Satan:
Lucifer gets bored running Hell and comes to the City of Angels in human form.
Lucifer is a successful, handsome, dashing, witty, likeable, and intelligent young man innocently “indulging in a few of his favorite things â€" wine, women and songs.”
Lucifer’s “conscience” is increasingly touched by a successful, beautiful, serious, likeable, and intelligent young woman detective.
Lucifer starts helping this woman to solve crimes by bringing out the innermost thoughts and desires of suspects.
Lucifer, enjoying himself and carefree, is pestered to return to Hell by an angel from heaven dressed all in black and with black wings.
Do NOT Let Fox TV Try To Make Lucifer Charming & Harmless

PROTEST To FOX NOW

HERE’s More TRUTH About The Fallen Angel Lucifer
"Satan is distinguished by his guile,” writes Monsignor Cristiani. “Guile is a deceitful scheme. The being that acts with guile has bad intentions. If he speaks, it is not to say the truth, but to deceive, to lead to falsehood. Satan is treacherous, false. One cannot trust him. He lacks equity, loyalty, frankness. He is erroneous, voluntarily obscure and dissimulative."

A Perverted Will
In his book Angels and Demons, author Luis Solimeo states:

The devils are pure spirits, since they are Angels. They do not have the weaknesses of men. From this, we understand why their revolt against God is permanent, immutable, and eternal.
Their will became perverted and fixed in evil after they abandoned the Highest Good as their objective.
As a consequence, the devils do not wish anything but evil in all their voluntary acts and, even when they appear to do good (as, for example, when they restore someone's health, give riches, or teach something), it is only as a means to cause more evil, leading the person to final perdition, which is their ultimate wish for all men.
PROTEST To FOX NOW

May Our Lady of Fatima protect us from the snares of the Devil.

Thank you.

I remain your friend,
In Jesus and Mary,

Thanks to the trillions of dollars that the Chinese have made flooding our shores with cheap products, China is now in a position of tremendous economic power.  So what is China going to do with all of that money?  One thing that they have decided to do is to buy up pieces of the United States and set up “special economic zones” inside our country from which they can continue to extend their economic domination.  One of these “special economic zones” would be just south of Boise, Idaho and the Idaho government is eager to give it to them.  China National Machinery Industry Corporation (Sinomach for short) plans to construct a “technology zone” south of Boise Airport which would ultimately be up to 50 square miles in size.  The Chinese Communist Party is the majority owner of Sinomach, so the 10,000 to 30,000 acre “self-sustaining city” that is being planned would essentially belong to the Chinese government. The planned “self-sustaining city” in Idaho would include manufacturing facilities, warehouses, retail centers and large numbers of homes for Chinese workers.  Basically it would be a slice of communist China dropped right into the middle of the United States.

According to the Idaho Statesman, the idea would be to build a self-contained city with all services included.  It would be modeled after the “special economic zones” that currently exist in China.

Perhaps the most famous of these “special economic zones” is Shenzhen.  Back in the 1970s, Shenzhen was just a very small fishing village.  Today it is a sprawling metropolis of over 14 million people.

If the Chinese have their way, we will soon be seeing these “special economic zones” pop up all over the United States.
