a little trivia, his parents didn't give him a middle name so he used the word lakers. that's why he's also known as adam lakers carolla. that name reflected in his license plate that still stood up to this point. hopefully the lakers will abhor carolla since there are so many pinoy lakers fans aside from the clippers and warriors.

For all the headaches a government official is embracing upon being elected into office, did you ever wonder how much they make in a month?  Why spend hundreds of millions for only a yearly salary not exceeding 1 million pesos for the top post of President of the archipelago?

Does that mean they all steal?  Or all for the service of the country? Sense of nationalism? "Give something back to the country"?  And yet some senators are so pompous and arrogant at shouting at citizens in their blue ribbon inquiries, forgetting that they are there at the service of the Filipino people.  Anyway…….. here are their salaries as of 2001.

The table below shows the salary schedule for government employees effective July 1, 2001. With the exception of the president, each position pays a range of salaries from Step 1 being the entry-level amount to Step 8 as the highest amount a particular position can get. The table only shows Step 1 and Step 8 for comparison purposes. The listings are not in any particular order.

Well, these are their official salaries only.  The benefits must be good.

there he is:

Carolla attended Colfax Elementary School, Walter Reed Junior High, and North Hollywood High School. Carolla never received good grades, graduating with a 1.75 grade point average. He claims to have majored in ceramics. Carolla did not receive his high school diploma until years later, claiming he owed the library $19.95 for a copy of We The People (ISBN 0-385-41903-1).

He was voted class clown and was the captain of his football team. Carolla played Pop Warner football for seven years; he later suggested that being involved in sports saved him from a chaotic home life.

He began living on his own at the age of 18. He briefly attended Los Angeles Valley College, a junior college, where he was placed on academic probation before dropping out to work in a series of jobs, including as a carpet cleaner, carpenter, boxing instructor, and traffic school instructor.

quiet people are often found to have profound insights. think about what a small brook sounds like. it's noisy and bubbly and shallow but a large river is relatively quiet like the mississippi river and extremely deep. as what the old adage says: STILL WATERS RUN DEEP.

BLYTHE, Ga. â€" If police officers find grainy white powder at a makeshift lab and assume they've made a drug bust, they could be making an explosive mistake.

The FBI has been training thousands of law enforcement officials across the nation to identify, disrupt and dismantle improvised explosive devices, including bombs made out of ordinary household products.

The need was underlined this week when federal authorities said they disrupted a suspected plot by a Christian militia to kill police officers with homemade bombs. That follows last year's alleged plot to make bombs out of beauty supplies and an airline passenger's alleged attempt on Christmas Day to detonate a bomb hidden in his underwear.

Such devices have been around for years, but they've become a greater concern recently not only because of terrorism, but because of the growing availability of dangerous recipes on the Internet.

Local-level bomb experts have been getting three-day courses designed to supplement their training with the latest techniques and strategies. First responders are invited on the third day to learn how to spot an improvised explosives lab.

In one recent class, bomb technicians created a wall of fire by igniting a rope filled with the same kind of explosives found in the airline bombing attempt. They blew to bits a latex glove filled with hot dogs â€" an attempt to approximate the blast's effect on a human hand.

"This is stuff that can literally kill you without thinking about it," said Jeff Haverty, a special agent with the FBI's Atlanta bureau.

Ordinary materials such as hydrogen peroxide â€" which is used in hair products â€" and swimming-pool chemicals can be used to make bombs. There are a host of other easily obtainable products that could be made into explosives that the FBI requested The Associated Press not disclose publicly.

"The average street police officer has some level of training and we want to add to that skill set, a few more things to put in their tool belt," said Donald Sachtleben, a former FBI bomb tech who now leads the training program. "By talking about it and showing them, we build up their confidence so if they walk into a dangerous situation, they now have more confidence."

Thousands of first responders at 16 spots around the nation have been trained since 2008. The FBI hopes to reach every U.S. bomb squad over the next two years to combat the growing threat of improvised explosives, Sachtleben said.

In a recent example, authorities say an Denver-area airport shuttle driver, Najibullah Zazi, plotted to bomb the New York subway system with explosives made from beauty supplies. Zazi pleaded guilty in February to conspiring to use weapons of mass destruction and other charges.

And nine suspects tied to a Midwest Christian militia were charged on Monday with conspiring to kill police officers and then plotting to attack a funeral using homemade bombs in hopes of killing more law enforcement officials.

The FBI training focuses on such devices, as well as manufactured chemicals such as PETN, which is used in Hollywood-type explosions and was found in the failed Detroit-bound airliner attack in December.

Authorities allege that Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab assembled an explosive device, including 80 grams of PETN, in the aircraft's bathroom and planned to detonate it with a syringe of chemicals. Passengers and crew thwarted the attack. Authorities say the Nigerian student has told investigators he received training and instructions from al-Qaida operatives in Yemen.

There are more than 3,000 certified bomb technicians on roughly 475 state and local bomb squads. All civilian bomb techs go through a six-week training program at the federally funded Hazardous Devices School on the Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Ala., which is run by the FBI and the U.S. Army.

The additional three-day FBI course is designed to educate officers on the latest threats and techniques.

At a recent seminar, about 30 bomb technicians from Georgia and South Carolina spent about half the time in classrooms and the other half getting hands-on experience in the bomb range. Much of the training focused on the latest specialized techniques used to detect bombs, from test kits to high-tech sniffer devices.

During one two-hour session, bomb techs were taught how to detect explosives using testing equipment and X-rays, and were briefed on how to use a high-powered water cannon to neutralize a homemade explosive.

On the last day, the group was joined by about 100 police and firefighters for a crash-course in detecting homemade explosives. The final lesson was to witness more than a dozen explosions rigged by the bomb technicians. Some were tiny bursts that ripped apart melons, others dramatic blasts that lit up the sky.

The technicians were told to teach their colleagues to look for certain chemicals and other signs of a makeshift explosive lab whenever they conduct a search warrant, search a crime scene or respond to a fire.

"We want to give them training and knowledge so they know what to do when they come across these dangerous items," said Haverty, the Atlanta FBI agent. "And preventing terrorism attacks is something we can't do alone. The law enforcement community as a whole has to be prepared."

Many health care professionals cringe when they watch popular medical programs - episodes of which glamorize behavior that would not be tolerated in reality.

A medical student and faculty directors from the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics analyzed depictions of bioethical issues and professionalism over a full season of two popular medical dramas - "Grey's Anatomy" and "House, M.D." - and found that the shows were "rife" with ethical dilemmas and actions that often ran afoul of professional codes of conduct.

The authors of the review, available in the April issue of the Journal of Medical Ethics, say they were well aware that their findings would end up stating the obvious.

But they nonetheless wanted to provide data that would shed light on the relationship of these depictions on the perceptions of viewers, both health professionals and the general public.

"I think the utility in our study is that it provides a starting point for a discussion," says fourth-year medical student Matthew Czarny, a researcher at the Berman Institute. "In no way are we saying that these shows are educational in and of themselves."

An earlier analysis by the co-authors, along with fellow Berman Institute faculty member Marie Nolan, Ph.D., found that more than 80 percent of medical and nursing students watch television medical dramas. That study also concluded that the programs may prompt students to think and talk about bioethical issues.

In analyzing the second seasons of "Grey's Anatomy" and "House," Czarny counted 179 depictions of bioethical issues, under 11 different topics, ranging from informed consent to organ-transplant eligibility to human experimentation.

Berman Institute Director Ruth Faden, Ph.D., the Philip Franklin Wagley Professor of Biomedical Ethics, and the institute's deputy director for medicine, Jeremy Sugarman, M.D., the Harvey M. Meyerhoff Professor of Bioethics and Medicine, designed the study, helped develop the coding and ensured the quality of the findings.

Given the vivid portrayals of clinical practice and bioethical issues in medical dramas - albeit through storylines that sometimes stray into the realm of outlandish - the co-authors began systematically eyeing the programs in the genre several years ago to assess the nature and extent of the depictions.

"Grey's Anatomy," now in its sixth season on ABC, is one of the most watched prime-time television series in the country and chronicles the lives of five surgical interns and their attending and resident physicians. "House," which airs on Fox and is also in its sixth season, follows the medical maverick Dr. Gregory House and his trainees, as they diagnose and treat only the most difficult cases.

Informed consent was the most frequently observed bioethical issue. Of 49 total incidents, 43 percent involved "exemplary" consent discussions, while the remaining instances were "inadequate."

In general, exemplary depictions portrayed "compassionate, knowledgeable physicians participating in a balanced discussion with a patient about possible treatment options."

Conversely, inadequate depictions were "marked by hurried and one-sided discussions, refusal by physicians to answer questions," and "even an entire lack of informed consent for risky procedures," the authors state.

They also tallied 22 incidents of "ethically questionable departures from standard practice," most of them depicting doctors endangering patients unnecessarily in their pursuit of a favorable outcome.

"In almost all of these incidents (18 out of 22), the implicated physician is not penalized," the authors note.

Czarny, the study's lead author, recalled an episode of "Grey's Anatomy" in which an intern forged an attending physician's signature.

"When this is discovered, the attending seems somewhat grateful that that was pursued," Czarny said. And he cited another egregious example from the show, in which an intern administers medical care while intoxicated.

The study also examined 400 incidents of professionalism, which included interactions among professional colleagues, as well as those with patients. The authors limited their count to incidents they defined as either "exemplary" or "egregious."

"Incidents related to respect were the most frequently observed across both series, and depictions were largely negative," the authors concluded.

The next most commonly observed departure from professionalism was sexual misconduct, with 58 incidents notched by the second season of "Grey's Anatomy" and 11 in "House."

Out of 178 interactions between professionals, across all issues, the authors deemed just nine exemplary in nature.

Acknowledging that both series are intended for entertainment purposes, the Berman Institute group said none of the findings were unexpected. And because the study was a content analysis, the authors did not set out to determine the value of these medical dramas as educational tools.

Rather, their goal was to inform discussions about whether medical dramas should be shown in a classroom to spur conversations about ethics and professionalism among medical and nursing students.

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- After years of keeping quiet about his personal life, pop star Ricky Martin has announced that he is gay.

"I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man," Ricky said in a message posted on his offical Web site. "I am very blessed to be who I am."

Ricky said writing his memoir and thinking about his two twin sons led him to go public.
"To keep living as I did up until today would be to indirectly diminish the glow that my kids where [sic] born with. Enough is enough. This has to change. This was not supposed to happen 5 or 10 years ago, it is supposed to happen now. Today is my day, this is my time, and this is my moment," he wrote.

Though the 38-year-old kept his sexuality private throughout most of his career, Ricky said he drew strength from that time.

"These years in silence and reflection made me stronger and reminded me that acceptance has to come from within and that this kind of truth gives me the power to conquer emotions I didn't even know existed," he continued. "What will happen from now on? It doesn't matter. I can only focus on what's happening to me in this moment. The word "happiness" takes on a new meaning for me as of today. It has been a very intense process. Every word that I write in this letter is born out of love, acceptance, detachment and real contentment. Writing this is a solid step towards my inner peace and vital part of my evolution."

Earlier this month, Barbara Walters told The Toronto Star that her 2000 interview with the "Livin' La Vida Loca" singer, where she grilled him about coming out, was a misstep on her part.

"In 2000, I pushed Ricky Martin very hard to admit if he was gay or not, and the way he refused to do it made everyone decide that he was," she told The Toronto Star. "A lot of people say that destroyed his career, and when I think back on it now, I feel it was an inappropriate question."

Ricky also Tweeted a link to his coming out announcement on his Web site, simply writing, "my life."

In an earlier Tweet on Monday, the singer posted a quote attributed to the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter. M.L.K.Jr.," he wrote.

GENEVA â€" The world's largest atom smasher conducted its first experiments at conditions nearing those after the Big Bang, breaking its own record for high-energy collisions with proton beams crashing into each other Tuesday at three times more force than ever before.

In a milestone for the $10 billion Large Hadron Collider's ambitious bid to reveal details about theoretical particles and microforces, scientists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, or CERN, collided the beams and took measurements at a combined energy level of 7 trillion electron volts.

The collisions herald a new era for researchers working on the machine in a 17-mile (27-kilometer) tunnel below the Swiss-French border at Geneva.

"That's it! They've had a collision," said Oliver Buchmueller from Imperial College in London as people closely watched monitors.

In a control room, scientists erupted with applause when the first successful collisions were confirmed. Their colleagues from around the world were tuning in by remote links to witness the new record, which surpasses the 2.36 TeV CERN recorded last year.

Dubbed the world's largest scientific experiment, researchers hope the machine can approach on a tiny scale what happened in the first split seconds after the Big Bang, which they theorize was the creation of the universe some 14 billion years ago.

The extra energy in Geneva is expected to reveal even more about the unanswered questions of particle physics, such as the existence of antimatter and the search for the Higgs boson, a hypothetical particle that scientists theorize gives mass to other particles and thus to other objects and creatures in the universe.

Tuesday's initial attempts at collisions were unsuccessful because problems developed with the beams, said scientists working on the massive machine. That meant the protons had to be "dumped" from the collider and new beams had to be injected.

The atmosphere at CERN was tense considering the collider's launch with great fanfare on Sept. 10, 2008. Nine days later, the project was sidetracked when a badly soldered electrical splice overheated, causing extensive damage to the massive magnets and other parts of the collider some 300 feet (100 meters) below the ground.

It cost $40 million to repair and improve the machine. Since its restart in November 2009, the collider has performed almost flawlessly and given scientists valuable data. It quickly eclipsed the next largest accelerator â€" the Tevatron at Fermilab near Chicago.

Two beams of protons began 10 days ago to speed at high energy in opposite directions around the tunnel, the coldest place in the universe, at a couple of degrees above absolute zero. CERN used powerful superconducting magnets to force the two beams to cross, creating collisions and showers of particles.

"Experiments are collecting their first physics data â€" historic moment here!" a scientist tweeted on CERN's official Twitter account.

"Nature does it all the time with cosmic rays (and with higher energy) but this is the first time this is done in Laboratory!" said another tweet.

When collisions become routine, the beams will be packed with hundreds of billions of protons, but the particles are so tiny that few will collide at each crossing.

The experiments will come over the objections of some people who fear they could eventually imperil Earth by creating micro black holes â€" subatomic versions of collapsed stars whose gravity is so strong they can suck in planets and other stars.

CERN and many scientists dismiss any threat to Earth or people on it, saying that any such holes would be so weak that they would vanish almost instantly without causing any damage.

Bivek Sharma, a professor at the University of California at San Diego, said the images of the first crashed proton beams were beautiful.

"It's taken us 25 years to build," he said. "This is what it's for. Finally the baby is delivered. Now it has to grow."

When Hippocrates wrote, “Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food,” he was probably worrying about the pesky plague epidemic of 430 BCâ€"not thinking about how a handful of almonds might ward off a girl’s pre-period headaches or how green tea might give her thicker, lusher hair. But those things may in fact be true, and scientists are beginning to figure out how food helps the body run smoothly inside and out. “People absolutely underestimate the importance of nutrition when it comes to appearance,” says Michael Roizen, M.D., chief of the Cleveland Clinic’s Wellness Center and coauthor of YOU: Being Beautiful. The prescription is simpleâ€"and mercifully easy to swallow. Read on, dig in, repeat as necessary.

For: Little Age Lines, Try GRAPES
What’s so special about antioxidants like the vitamin C found in grapes? They act as your skin’s bodyguards, repairing and even preventing premature dryness, fine lines and sagging caused by tiny molecules called free radicals, by-products of normal cell function that wreak havoc on your skin, says Dr. Roizen. One to one and a half cups of grapes deliver close to 20 percent of your daily C needs, and will also supply a chemical that helps preserve the protein elastin, which keeps your skin plumpâ€"not prune-y. (And, yes, red wine has it too.)

For: A Bad Mood, Try HEALTHY CARBS
When you’re blue, you probably crave sweets, and there’s a biological reason why: Simple carbs prompt the brain to secrete serotonin, the calming hormone that can ease stress and depression, says Kelly O’Connor, R.D., of the Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore. But after the initial spike in mood, sugary treats set up the body for a blood sugar crash that can make your bad mood worse. A better food group for a boost in spirits: complex carbs like chickpeas, lentils and whole-grain bread.

For: Acne, Try FISH or WALNUTS
What you don’t want: anything made with white flour, especially refined, processed carbs like white bread and sugary cereals. (One study found that these foods triggered more breakouts than a diet rich in fish, fruit, whole grains and legumes.) What you do want, according to Nicholas Perricone, M.D., adjunct professor of medicine at Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine: “Foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, which help control inflammation throughout the body, including inflammatory acne,” he says. That means halibut, walnuts, flaxseedsâ€"and especially salmon, which Dr. Perricone believes should be the one food on every woman’s clear-skin plan.

For: Splitting Nails, Try PROTEIN-rich foods
We think of nails as one layer, the one that gets buffed and painted during a mani. But your nails are actually made up of layers of a protein called keratinâ€"and eating protein may strengthen those layers. If your nails are weak, for a lot of women, the easiest fix is protein. Researchers from the University of North Carolina who studied the growth of big toenails (no, we’re not kidding) found that nail growth rates have increased by almost 25 percent since the 1930s, possibly because protein-rich foods are more available. But some women today still don’t get enough because of chronic dieting, says Susan Kraus, R.D., of Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey. Most of us require between 45 and 65 grams per day, so try to eat some protein, like lean beef, poultry, fish or nuts, at every meal. Don’t forget breakfast: Just two eggs provide 12.5 gramsâ€"roughly 20 percent of your daily requirement.

For: Bad Breath, Try PLAIN YOGURT
Breath mints may be a quick fix, but they don’t combat the main cause of bad breathâ€"a buildup of bacteria on your tongue, in between your teeth and in the back of your throat (often caused by food left behind from not brushing thoroughly enough). In fact, if your breath mint contains sugar, it’ll actually feed those microbes and can make odor worse in the long run, according to Kraus. But Japanese research has found that eating plain, sugar-free yogurt may help get rid of the stinky sulfur compounds.

For: Thin, Dry Hair, Try GREEN TEA
The benefits of green tea keep piling up, and here’s another one: The caffeine in tea slows the production of a chemical that shrinks hair follicles and results in thinner strands, says Dr. Roizen. He recommends two to three cups of tea daily. (Coffee drinkers, your morning cup of java can have the same effect.) But if you’re plagued with dry, flaky scalp or hair loss, it may be a sign that you’re not getting enough zinc, says Lisa Drayer, R.D., author of The Beauty Diet. Meet your 8 milligram daily quota with a variety of zinc-rich foods like crabmeat, yogurt, baked beans, green peas and pumpkin seeds.

For: PMS or Premenstrual syndrome, Try MILK or CHEESE
When women don’t get enough calcium, they may experience more severe cramps, mood swings and bloating, says New York City endocrinologist Susan Thys-Jacobs, M.D. Her research found that 1,200 milligrams of calcium a day (the amount in about two slices of Swiss cheese plus a glass of skim milk and a yogurt) can cut premenstrual symptoms by as much as 48 percent. If you tend to get headaches during your period, you may be low in magnesium. A quarter cup of almonds or cashews can help you meet up to 30 percent of your day’s needs for the mineral.

For: More Energy, Try AN APPLE WITH PEANUT BUTTER
The antifatigue snack experts have recommended to Glamour more often than any other: an apple with a tablespoon of peanut butter. Unlike a quick Oreo fix or other treat, the apple combo has fiber-rich carbohydrates with a little protein, which takes more time to digest than carbs alone, so you’ll stay energized longer, says Keri Gans, R.D., spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association. It’s fail-proofâ€"and delish. If all you have at your disposal is the office vending machine, choose a protein-rich bag of peanuts
