Lucas Buick, Hipstamatic

A Profitable Instagram Rival? Hipstamatic Hipstamatic mobile app didn't hit the $1 billion Facebook payday this week, but it has had a profitable business model for years. Before Instagram ever existed, Hipstamatic brought retro digital photos to the masses. The Hipstamatic iPhone app, which lets users choose retro filters for photos, has been wildly popular since it launched in 2009. Founders Lucas Buick and Ryan Dorshorst position Hipstamatic as a digital photography tool that perhaps might take over a traditional photo concern like Kodak. The Hipstamatic story begins in early 2009, when the two were the owners of a flailing design studio. Over ...

6 Habits of True Strategic Thinkers

6 Habits of True Strategic Thinkers

In the beginning, there was just you and your partners. You did every job. You coded, you met with investors, you emptied the trash and phoned in the midnight pizza. Now you have others to do all that and it's time for you to "be strategic." Whatever that means. If you find yourself resisting "being strategic," because it sounds like a fast track to irrelevance, or vaguely like an excuse to slack off, you're not alone. Every leader's temptation is to deal with what's directly in front, because it always seems more urgent and concrete. Unfortunately, if you do that, you put your company at risk. While you concentrate on steering around potholes, you'll miss windfall opportunities, not to mention any signals that the road you're on is leading off a cliff. This is a tough job, make no mistake. "We need strategic leaders!" is a pretty constant refrain at every company, large and small. One reason the job is so tough: no one really understands what it entails. It's hard to be a strategic leader if you don't know what strategic leaders are supposed to do. After two decades of advising organizations large and small, my colleagues and I have formed a clear idea of what's required of you in this role. Adaptive strategic leaders — the kind who thrive in today's uncertain environment -- do six things well: Anticipate Most of the focus at most companies is on what's directly ahead. The leaders lack "peripheral vision." This can leave your company vulnerable to rivals who detect and ...

8 Core Beliefs of Extraordinary Bosses

8 Core Beliefs of Extraordinary Bosses

A few years back, I interviewed some of the most successful CEOs in the world in order to discover their management secrets. I learned that the "best of the best" tend to share the following eight core beliefs. 1. Business is an ecosystem, not a battlefield. Average bosses see business as a conflict between companies, departments and groups. They build huge armies of "troops" to order about, demonize competitors as "enemies," and treat customers as "territory" to be conquered. Extraordinary bosses see business as a symbiosis where the most diverse firm is most likely to survive and thrive. They naturally create teams that adapt easily to new markets and can quickly form partnerships with other companies, customers ... and even competitors. 2. A company is a community, not a machine. Average bosses consider their company to be a machine with employees as cogs. They create rigid structures with rigid rules and then try to maintain control by "pulling levers" and "steering the ship." Extraordinary bosses see their company as a collection of individual hopes and dreams, all connected to a higher purpose. They inspire employees to dedicate themselves to the success of their peers and therefore to the community--and company--at large. 3. Management is service, not control. Average bosses want employees to do exactly what they're told. They're hyper-aware of anything that smacks of insubordination and create environments where individual initiative is squelched by the "wait and ...

A Start-up About-Face: From Fabulis to Fab

Video Transcript 00:00 Bradford Shellhammer: I'm Bradford Shellhammer, co-founder of Fab.com and the company's Chief Creative Officer. 00:06 Jason Goldberg: And I'm Jason Goldberg, Founder and CEO of Fab.com and between the two of us, we've built the company together. 00:21 Jason Goldberg: We got together in 2010 to start a company called Fabulis, which is a social networking site and we did that for a year. But we just didn't see how that had a path to become a huge business. And we could just never get to that point where the people we knew and the people that we're close with said, "I love this product". And that's where we kinda said to ourselves, "Alright, why should we spend another day, yet alone another dollar, working on something that we don't think is something the people that we know and care about and care about us, want to use. And so that was that "A-ha" moment of saying, "Well, let's build something that everyone we know wants to use." And so we got together in early 2011 and said, if we could do anything what would we do? Which was a great exercise for us and we kinda had this decision matrix of looking at three things; One is, what are we most passion about? The second is, what could we be the best in the world at? The third is, could we do it in a great market where there's a big opportunity? And every answer of that question came down to design, design, design. 01:28 Bradford Shellhammer: That's the foundation of the company and I think it allow for us ...

4 Secrets of Great Critical Thinkers

4 Secrets of Great Critical Thinkers

In 2009, JD Wetherspoon, a chain of more than 800 pubs in the UK, was facing declining sales. Demand for beer had been down for five years. In addition, pricing pressure from super market chains was intense, and higher alcohol taxes further squeezed its already tight margins. What would you say is the company's real business problem? Most people see it as a sales problem and recommend better marketing and promotion. But this reflex may be wrong. In Wetherspoon's case, the company examined the problem more deeply, looked at data, and framed the situation from multiple angles. In the end, they found the real problem: A subtle but profound shift in consumer preferences. As a result, the chain responded with much bolder actions, transforming all its pubs into family friendly cafes during day hours. The strategy worked. Wetherspoon saw its earnings per share jump by 7.1 percent in the first year. Two years after this frame shift (2011), it has maintained its earnings per share and, with the investment in this new strategy, its free cash flow is up 12.9 percent. Exploring multiple problem framings, by zooming out rather than in, gets you to the root of issues and more creative solutions. If you fail to do this, you risk solving the wrong problem. Ironically, the more experience you have, the harder it will to break from conventional mindsets. Leading companies often get stuck in old business models. Kodak engineers developed an early version of the digital camera, while the ...

Keith Cline: Recruiting Great Employees

Keith Cline: Recruiting Great Employees

Video Transcript 00:01 Keith Cline: I am Keith Cline, the founder of Dissero, which is a recruiting firm that works with venture-backed start-ups primarily in Boston and New York. I work with a variety of consumer web mobile companies such as Rent the Runway, Pixable, Birchbox, Vivox, Word Stream, so apparently venture-backed companies. So, recruiting is a lot like dating, and dating sometimes leads to an engagement, which sometimes leads to marriage. That's a horrible analogy, but it's very true. So, as you're going through the interview process with the person, you really need to know not only they great the job function that they'll they're performing, but they're going to be a great culture fit for your company, and that they're someone who's going to be hopefully a thought leader and a piece of your culture that embraces the thought that other people want to work there too. 00:48 Keith Cline: There are a lot of difficult areas that companies are starving for great talent. One is definitely software engineering and web development because right now there's such a critical void for all of the tech companies as finding great engineers. Second is analytics. So, analytics is becoming a big piece for all companies because data is such a critical piece of making decisions. So, finding people that are very data-driven, analytical type of people is very difficult. Third is marketing. So, marketing has changed a lot over the past couple of years, five years, especially 10 ...

Idan Cohen - Boxee

Video Transcript 00:00 Idan Cohen: At Boxee we are trying to be an alternative to cable. So looking at the new way that people try and consume media and TV shows and movies, and we are trying to bring all of that media through the internet into the TV. We started the company five years ago. We were trying to build a box. We knew that we wanted to create a new experience for the living room and there is actually no open platform in the living room. So in order to get there, we needed to create our own hardware. We're definitely software people. I mean, it was clear that, that's what we know how to do. We know how to create great experiences. Who are your biggest competitors and how are you better than them? 00:47 Idan Cohen: I would say Apple, Roku and Microsoft... And for us, it was very clear that we can do a better job that we can out innovate and we're definitely... We can move faster and create more compelling experiences, be more open, have less agendas, and that's exactly what happened. I mean looking... For these big incumbents, it's extremely hard to move fast and to introduce new concepts. We definitely benefit from the fact that we have in some ways a smaller audience and definitely more tech savvy. So, we can see how these kinds of concepts that we are trying to introduce are being received very quickly. So I think that for us it's always just thinking a few steps ahead -- what's out there right now that we can use and can actually benefit our customers and ...

Success Stories: Warby Parker

Warby Parker Disrupts the Eyewear Industry The founders explain how they dramatically undercut the dominant glasses makers. Neil Blumenthal and David Gilboa, two founders of Warby Parker, explain how they dramatically undercut the dominant glasses makers. They position their $95 vintage-inspired frames like women's fashion accessories--not just to be sold when a prescription runs out. Video Transcript: 00:00 Neil Blumenthal: Warby Parker designs and produces vintage-inspired frames with prescription lenses for $95 whereas it would typically cost $500. And for every pair that we sell, we distribute one to someone in need. What is the main challenge in the glasses industry that you want to overcome? 00:18 Blumenthal: When we were sure of exploring this opportunity, we took a look at the industry dynamics and we found that there were few very large companies controlling the market and keeping prices artificially high. One such company is Luxottica and they basically own the frame industry. So they're vertically integrated. They own manufacturing facilities in Europe and Asia. They own licenses to all the major brands like Chanel, DKNY, Ralph Lauren. So when you buy those brands, you're buying from a company that's just licensing and paying a royalty to those brands. Those brands aren't even designing those frames or manufacturing it or even selling it. So when you look at an industry and you see that there's this one company that's doing roughly $7 billion a year in revenue ...

Brooklyn Industries: Holiday Shopping

Brooklyn Industries: Holiday Shopping

This year's Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping weekend was a significant boost for US retailers, raking in around $53 billion nationwide. That's a number that far surpassed most projections. But while big box stores head into the rest of the holiday shopping season armed with slashed prices and seemingly endless inventories, small retailers have what can be a daunting task of trying to compete. "It's a game we have to play—but we play by different rules," says Lexy Funk, CEO and co-founder of Brooklyn Industries, a clothing retailer that boasts 14 stores in cities including New York, Portland, and Chicago. "If we discounted 70 percent off of everything for the whole month of December, like a big chain would, we'd be out of business." After 11 years running a small-but-growing retail business, Funk has learned how to maximize holiday transactions, which make up about 23 percent of Brooklyn Industries's annual sales figures. Here, she shares some lessons from the front lines. Tune in to your best customers. Not every customer wants what the mass market offers. Instead, focus on personality, personalization, or one-of-a-kind items. Funk says this year Brooklyn Industries is offering a line of handmade leather bags. "While we charge more for this item; it is unique to us. It's what our customer comes to us for," she says. Her team chose to promote these bags as holiday gift items, and, so far, the bags are bestsellers. "People are willing to pay more for something that is ...
