2. People

Date: March 4, 1974

The cover nods to Mia Farrow's role in The Great Gatsby and William Peter Blatty's The Exorcist ("a sermon nobody sleeps through"). Inside, the story of a female bail bondsman and a particularly insensitive item from the Medics column called "Two Fatties get a new kind of lock jaw" about two overweight women who had their mouths cemented shut in order to lose weight.

The Very First Issues of 19 Famous Magazines

Alex French

These magazines have come a long way since Volume 1, Issue 1. Here's what they looked like way back in the beginning.

1. Time

Date: March 3, 1923

The cover was a portrait of House Speaker Joseph G. Cannon. Content consisted of short news bulletins, an ad for All America Cables ("when time is short and minutes count use the direct cable facilities to Central America, South America, Cuba, Porto Rico other West Indies") and, strangely, imaginary interviews with Jack Dempsey, the boy Emperor of China, John D. Rockefeller, and Princess Yolanda of Italy.

On whether she is concerned she might offend religious groups with the imagery, the singer said, "Wala naman po akong gustong i-offend dito, kasi high fashion pati make-up, sa costume. So it's ano talaga, for art."

Earlier in the pictorial, Uson is also seen blowing a condom to inflate it, which she said symbolizes her advocacy for safe sex and sex education.

Asked what her purpose is in carrying out the pictorial, Uson said, "Also 'yung awareness din sa breast cancer kasi babae parin ang madre, at isa 'yon sa mga advocacy ko, to examine the breast."

"Basically, sex education, safe sex, breast cancer awareness, freedom of expression all in one," she said.

Plot

Amigo centers on Rafael Dacanay, kapitan of the barrio of San Isidro in a rice-growing area of Luzon. His brother Simón, head of the local guerrilla band, has forced the surrender of the Spanish guardia civil outpost and charged Rafael with the task of imprisoning the guardia Captain and the barrio’s Spanish friar, Padre Hidalgo, in the name of the revolutionary government. But when the American troops chasing General Emilio Aguinaldo arrive, the Spanish officer and Padre Hidalgo are freed, and a garrison under the command of Lieutenant Ike Compton is left to ‘protect’ the barrio. The American occupation policy now changes from ‘hearts and minds’ to ‘concentration’ (what was called ‘hamletting’ during the Vietnam war) and Rafael has to answer to both the Americans and the Filipino patriots, with deadly consequences. Amigo is a 2010 American-Filipino drama film written and directed by John Sayles. The film takes place in the Philippines in 1900 during the Philippineâ€"American War. It is one of only a small handful of films directed by an American to address the war. The only other notable example is The Real Glory (1939), starring Gary Cooper. (wikipedia)

Filipino actors

“We made that movie really fast,” said Dane, who was Timbo in “True Blood” and first made an impact on TV as gay teen Jesse in HBO’s “In Treatment.” He said of the Philippines, “It was amazing to really submerge yourself in that culture. It was lovely over there [in Bohol].”

Smiling, the actor enthused about: “We went snorkeling and ate a lot of freshly caught fish. It was really nice to have Filipino actors in the movie to help show us around and give us a good timeâ€"drink some rum, eat some fish and suckling pig.” He especially remembered Joel Torre, who had a major role in “Amigo.”

On shooting “Amigo,” which dramatized the impact of the Philippine-American War on a village, Dane recounted with enthusiasm, “We were in Bohol; it was amazing. They built the village pretty much in the jungle. It was my first time in any country anywhere around there. The people were unbelievably accommodating. The film crews were impressive.”

‘Amigo’ actor, now Hollywood hottie, loves Bohol

By Ruben V. Nepales

LOS ANGELESâ€"Dane DeHaan, who shot his first feature film in Bohol as part of the cast of John Sayles’ “Amigo,” is suddenly a hot Hollywood actor. Acting opposite Daniel Radcliffe (they’ve become best friends) in “Kill Your Darlings,” Dane has many critics raving and writing the same line, “You cannot take your eyes off him when he’s on screen.”

The actor who played Gil, a young American soldier in “Amigo,” landed the plum Harry Osborn role in “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.” Dane recently scored another big oneâ€"he’ll play James Dean, no lessâ€"and opposite Robert Pattinson in “Life.”

In addition, Dane stars in “Metallica Through the Never” as a young man who will go through everything (and that’s everything) to search for a bag for the heavy metal band.

Brain-eating amoeba rattles nerves in Louisiana

Associated Press
September 20th, 2013

This combo of images provided by the Center for Disease Control shows the Naegleria fowleri amoeba in the cyst stage, left, trophozoite stage, center and the flagellated stage, right. AP Photo/Center For Disease Control

NEW ORLEANS â€" Officials are trying to pin down the source of a deadly amoeba found in the water supply of a suburban New Orleans community.

Bottled water sales in St. Bernard Parish have skyrocketed and some people worry about washing their faces in the shower.

Experts say the only danger is to people who manage to get the microscopic organism way up their noses. Dr. Raoult Ratard, Louisiana’s state epidemiologist, said its only entry to the brain is through minute openings in a bone about level with the top of the eyeball.

State health officials tried to dispel common “myths and rumors” about the amoeba Naegleria fowleri â€" starting with the notion that the parish water isn’t safe to drink.

But belief comes hard to many people.

If we are to understand our history from a Filipino viewpoint, then we go back to Carlos Quirino, National Artist for Historical Literature, who declared that the first man to circumnavigate the world was not the Portuguese-born Magellan or the Spanish Elcano but a Filipino, Magellan’s slave, whose name has come down to us in Antonio Pigafetta’s eyewitness account as “Enrique” or “Henry.” He is also referred to as “Enrique el negro” or “Black Henry” for either of two reasons: His dark skin, or his alleged involvement in the massacre of Magellan’s men in Cebu, in the Battle of Mactan.

History / Filipino was first to circumnavigate the world
September 20, 2013, 06:35:42 AM
In 1993, National Artist F. Sionil Jose published a novel, “Viajero.” The book deals with Filipino wanderlust and includes the fascinating story of Enrique, the slave of Ferdinand Magellan. Enrique completed the circumnavigation of the world, returning to Spain, after his master was killed in Mactan, in 1521. It is rather amusing that schoolchildren are still taught that Magellan “discovered” the Philippines when there were people here ahead of him. Filipino children should be taught that Magellan did not know where he was, that he arrived or landed in what-was-yet-to-become the Philippines, in 1521.

Whistle-blowers Benhur Luy and Merlina Suñas said these withdrawals were among their single biggest haul in their years of working under Napoles.

***

The Commission on Audit (COA) is investigating disbursements amounting to P23.6 billion from the Malampaya Fund by the Arroyo administration, 60 percent of which were released during a spending binge before the May 2010 presidential election.

***

The COA review of the Malampaya Fund is separate from the special audit on the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF), or pork barrel, results of which have led to the filing of plunder and malversation charges against three senators, five congressmen and 30 other officials of state agencies and NGOs.

Palace letter sets off Malampaya plunder
Napoles fake NGOs got nearly P900M

By Gil C. Cabacungan

SOURCE OF GAS WEALTH The Malampaya gas rig is found 80 kilometers off the shore of northwest Palawan. INQUIRER PHOTO

The release of P900 million from the Malampaya Fund to the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) had already been “fixed” even before officials asked for quick response money from Malacañang on the pretext that farmers needed livelihood kits to recover from the damage wrought by Storms “Ondoy” and “Pepeng” in 2009, the Inquirer has learned.

These allegedly overpriced livelihood kits to farmers were just a ruse deployed by fake nongovernment organizations (NGOs) owned by detained businesswoman Janet Lim-Napoles to access the Malampaya Fund sought by then Agrarian Reform Secretary Nasser Pangandaman from then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

if you must kill them, kill them with suddenness.  torture is unnecessary.  yeah, just keep them away with this gadget.  it is working for me...

Mike,

When I was in college, i had a mouse in my apartment. I bought the sticky mouse traps and placed them on corners. Within a week, i found 4 mice on the mice traps.

I exterminated them accordingly afterwards.

Try the mice traps as well.

cruel.  very.  pied piper!

this supposedly fake honorary consul in bohol missed reading the local scene.  first world country hubris?  he must have thought the title would make locals shake in their boots.  imagine, taking sierra leone as the country he's representing.  make him charles taylor-made.  whew!
#18873
which reminds me, if janet napoles went on as she did without being caught, with the way she was moving around in social circles, it may not have taken her long to get the idea of becoming an honorary consul.  some members of her family were already making moves to join congress (daughter and brother as party listers), she could have chosen the diplomatic way and would have made it, hands down.
#18874
most of those who apply for this honorary position seem to regard this as one more accolade to their resume. and an entry as a member of that rarefied diplomatic corps as they get invited to diplomatic functions and get to "know" the right people to further their business interests.  it must be so, otherwise, why bother?  there's no salary here, remember.
#18875
first upfront, they apply for the position and the country they wish to represent invariably asks for their financial standing (obviously the reason is to find out if they can afford to work without pay and to put up an office for such a function).  when the foreign country they wish to represent gives the go-signal, that country officially endorses them to the DFA, which then accredits them.
#18876
this much i know...

most honorary consuls of foreign countries in the philippines are filipino millionaires or businessmen, most are residents of bigger cities.  (it's unimaginable for an honorary consul holding office in valencia, bohol.)  there are, of course, also foreigners living here permanently who are honorary consuls.

interesting.

Guidelines on how to Become an Honorary Consul

An Honorary Consul has the same responsibilities as a full Consul, but the post is usually a part-time, unpaid and therefore slightly less formal position. Most Third World Countries lack the funds needed to pay for a fulltime Consul to be present in every major city in the world, so Honorary Consuls are often appointed instead. These are citizens (or residents)* of the host country who are granted a limited diplomatic immunity in return for their services. As an Honorary Consul, the part-time diplomat can expect to receive invitations to functions which can offer a variety of business and trading contacts. For a small investment of time, this position can be very profitable for both sides.

There are five important points to remember when considering an application

1. Find a gap and be prepared to fill it.
2. Match your talents to a country that will appreciate you.
3. Be prepared to work for no fee. Don't worry, your investment will be rewarded at a later stage.
4. Ensure that you can offer your selected nation a tangible, immediate benefit.
5. Choose a nation with which you can maximise your linguistic skills and political connections, if you have any. Remember, it is not necessary to have lived in or even visited the country that you wish to represent.

my personal experience:

1) tolerate their presence if you can't keep them as pets.  that way, they won't touch your things.

2) have a cat.  (prepare for a dead or dying mouse offered at your feet by a grateful cat.)

3) please don't kill them with your bare hands.  their kind may come back tenfold and have their revenge.

4) they can be friends.  think "ben" and "willard".  add those medical research laboratories that sacrifice them for experiments.

5) if it's beyond you to tolerate their presence, there's a gadget that's plugged, the electronic pest repellent.  it's supposed to keep them away.  it's something like this (mine is another brand and colored black; costs a little over 2k pesos):

wow ! your 11 year old can sing that? never heard of this song till now. :P

it's a song of your granddad's heyday.  guess what attracted me to this song... the violin solo at the end.  of course, you know debbie reynolds, the mother of carrie fisher, she of the doughnut hair fame of star wars.

what our daughter did was to download the lyrics of this song, printed it, and pasted it on her dresser's mirror.  was i fascinated.  for her, tammy means mommy, hehehe.

i promise to sing "tammy", a song that came about while i was still part of the cosmos.  it happens to be the only song that i can finish because it fits my range and does not render me out of breath.  besides, i love old songs, those that belong to my father's time...

my ambition, because it's more of an ambition than a plan, really, is to surprise the 2 of you with a visit there... i owe fr chic some candles, you see.  can't say when, though.

i love to imagine that we (the banana republic and i) can take my kid sister and youngest daughter along.  should the occasion arise, i'd storm you with PMs, hehe.

there's an ongoing (i think it's still ongoing but for the rains) international pyromusical competition here at the mall of asia on saturdays.  china was the defending champion when i watched it, once.  i was rooting for the netherlands (a country also famous for fireworks).  of course, because i didn't like china to win, for obvious reasons.  i must admit though that china's show was lyrical.

so now i'm gushing all over that we can after all compete in this kind of creative contest, and make it to the top.

The show then softened to the tune of Carol Banawa’s “Tanging Yaman,” a favorite Church piece, slowing down the pace for the grand buildup that is to come.

The show’s final third tune strung together epic pieces that combined classical music with electronica and pop: “Vivaldi vs. Vertigo” by renowned German crossover violinist David Garrett, “Business Part 1” by Scottish composer Craig Armstrong, “Cerberus” by renowned media musical scorer Audiomachine and the finale, “For the Win” by US music company Two Steps from Hell.

The fireworks choreography meshed together original Filipino music with pop-classical pieces from top global artists, altogether showcasing the Philippine story- that is the love for the traditional and the divine while embracing the pace of change and progress.

The 15-minute show opened with rhythmic bursts, the fireworks serving as their own percussion. The repertoire then moved to a slow-to-fast dance of the waltz and then transitioning to the beat of singer Angeline Quinto’s promotional tourism song “Piliin mo ang Pilipinas” and the Tinikling folk dance song.

grabeh, with a capital G!

to think that i'm watching this only on my laptop and the download isn't continuous.  this is great!

we should know more of this about ourselves.  we can compete, we can win.  we're not only about thieves and self-engrossed government officials.  we are positively creative too.
