perhaps this goes to show that teaching is a stressful job.  coupled with possible poor diet and exposure to pollution, the stage is set.

i can understand the 10k gift.  it's a way of distributing meager resources.  but it's good only for 2 or 3 laboratory tests.  full treatment of breast cancer from a to z is more than 1M.  where could teachers get that?

health insurances, in the case of those lucky enough to have more, including philhealth, may cover only a total of 1/4 the needed amount.  truly, any teacher would need to scrape more in order to survive the disease.

Jose Mujica, the President of Uruguay. has made the news recently because of reports of his humble and basic style of life. (VOXXI)

A President’s farm

President Mujica lives with his wife, Lucía Topolansky, in a rural area in the outskirts of Montevideo. They never wanted to move to the presidential mansion in Montevideo. Their small farm, actually a land parcel with a rural adobe house, is the same one they bought many years ago with the intention to be farmers. When Mujica was elected deputy and later senator, the job consumed almost all his time and he could not take care of the house and farm maintenance.

The flowers and vegetable growing continues, but Mujica no longer can dedicate himself to the agricultural tasks that he carried out until recently. Mujica and his wife gave part of their land to several families, so that they could live there forever as they had no resources at all. He did make some improvements to the house, most notably replacing the old straw ceiling. Perhaps, the most significant change is the appearance of security cameras, the new road that connects the farm to the road, and the few guards who take care of the presidential security. The rest remains more or less the same… including Manuela, their ancient three-legged dog of undetermined pedigree.

Rescuers managed to save 33 people from the building’s wreckage in the two-day search. By Sunday morning, Alok Awasthi, local commander of the National Disaster Response Force, said all 93 people listed as missing had been accounted for and the search was called off.

The five-story building that collapsed Friday was the third deadly cave-in of a Mumbai structure in six months. The cause is under investigation.

High demand for housing around India’s crowded cities combined with lax inspections often result in contractors cutting corners by using substandard materials or adding unauthorized floors.

Morgan-Thompson
You say to-MAY-to, they say tom-TAY-to.

Britons are booking orders for a double-crop wonderplant called the TomTato, that puts out cherry tomatoes on the vine, while growing whole white potatoes underground.

"It's the perfect marriage," Michael Perry, new product manager at Thompson-Morgan, who is taking TomTato orders for next April, told NBC News. "Why wouldn't someone want to buy one?"

Quote from: islander on September 27, 2013, 02:36:15 AMMy source declined to identify the lawmaker and the branch of legislature. I can only guess the identity based on the demands: he or she is old enough to have grandchildren and is eligible for election in 2016.

the scuttlebutt is that it's revilla.

just a speck of the total amount he allegedly got would be enough for my sister's whole chemotherapy treatment (PhP1.7m).  it would probably take me the whole year to raise this amount, if at all.

my sister is a taxpayer who had cried some years back when she realized how unbelievably big her tax deductions are.  she has learned to live with it, but i don't think she can forgive our thieving legislators.
