Watch Out For Wild Claims

It seems there’s a new claim every week for a food, supplement, or treatment that can help prevent cancer. Some may be legitimate but have not been fully studied for a long period of time. Some claims are bogus and should not be given any credibility. The American Cancer Society recommends that, when it comes to claims about cancer prevention, you should only trust reputable sources and find out how the method was tested scientifically. Use common sense and look at trusted sources before changing your behavior or trying the latest fad.

Quit Smoking

Though it may seem obvious, avoiding tobacco can help you avoid cancer. According to the Mayo Clinic, smoking is linked with a number of types of cancer, including lung, kidney, bladder, and cervical cancer. If you smoke cigarettes or cigars, or use chewing tobacco, it’s important to quit. Even if you’re not a smoker, be sure to make an effort to avoid secondhand smoke, which can increase your risk of lung cancer.

Avoid Risky Behaviors

Certain behaviors can lead to infections that might increase your cancer risk. Behaviors that are considered “risky,” such as sharing needles and unsafe sexual practices, should be avoided. To practice safe sex, use a condom and limit your number of sexual partners.

Stay Active

Regular exercise and physical activity can help you maintain a healthy weight, which in turn may play a role in lowering your cancer risk. The Mayo Clinic reports that physical activity may lower your risk for both breast cancer and colon cancer. Weight maintenance could also lower the risk of breast, prostate, colon, lung, and kidney cancers. You don’t need to be a champion athlete. Aim to incorporate 30 minutes of exercise into your daily routine, at least five days a week.

Eat a Balanced Diet

While dietary changes alone are not guaranteed to prevent cancer, experts believe that making the right choices at mealtime might help reduce your risk. Be sure that fruits and vegetables are an important part of your daily diet, as well as whole grains. Avoid high-fat foods, such as fatty cuts of meat and whole-fat dairy products, since being overweight or obese can increase your cancer risk.

Use Sun Protection

To help avoid skin cancer, there are several daily changes you can make:

Use sunscreen (at least SPF 15) or cover your skin when you’re outdoorsâ€"or stay in the shade.

Hats and UPF-rated clothing can help protect you when you need to be in the sun for a long time.

Avoid the sun during the peak hours of 10am and 4pm. The rays of the midday sun are the strongest.

Don’t use sunlamps or tanning beds.

Get Screenings and Immunizations

Early detection methods for cancer can be life-saving. Your doctor can administer preventive screening tests for different types of cancer, such as skin, breast, colon, cervix, and prostate cancer. With early detection that can find a tumor when it’s small and hasn’t spread, the chance of successful treatment is much higher. You should also talk to your doctor about getting immunized against the viral infections hepatitis B and human papillomavirus (HPV). Hepatitis B can increase your risk of liver cancer, and HPV can lead to cervical cancer.

Philippines

The only Asian country to bag the "Big Four," the Philippines is the third and the most recent country to join the ranks of Brazil and Venezuela. Thanks to Megan Young who won the Miss World 2013, the Philippines has completed the four major beauty pageants with two Miss Universe crowns (1969, 1972), four Miss International crowns (1964, 1970, 1979, 2005) and one Miss Earth crown (2008).

Brazil

Known for its exotic beauty, grace and elegance; Brazil is the first country to win all four pageants, the latest is when they won Miss Earth in 2004. The largest country in both South America and Latin America; Brazil has won two Miss Universe crowns (1963, 1968), one Miss World crown (1971), two Miss Earth crowns (2004, 2009) and one Miss International crown (1968).

Venezuela

Venezuela is a veteran when it comes to the "Big Four." The most successful country who managed to bag a total of 19 victories; 6 Miss Universe crowns (1979-2009), 6 Miss World crowns (1955-2011), 6 Miss International crowns (1985-2010) and one Miss Earth crown (2005).

The pageant that is not based on looks alone, Miss International winners are expected to serve as "Ambassadors of Peace and Beauty." The ultimate goal of Miss International is to promote world peace, goodwill and understanding.

Known as a non-profit organization, Miss Earth Foundation aims to increase the level of awareness on current environmental issues. Miss Earth is organized annually by Manila-based Carousel Productions and the only major global pageant that promotes the care and preservation for the planet's environment and ecology.

Known  as the Big Four International beauty pageant, these four contests are considered to be the most coveted titles by all beauty titlists, with Miss Universe and Miss World, the two pageants that most countries considered to be the most important. So here are the countries who successfully won the big four as of September 2013.

Philippines, Brazil And Venezuela: Three Countries To Win The Big Four International Beauty Pageants

By Riza Ornos
September 30, 2013

There are hundreds of beauty pageants held every year around the globe but out of these pageants there are only 4 that are considered the most prestigious; Miss World (1951), Miss Universe (1952), Miss International (1960) and Miss Earth (2001).

Miss World 2013

Run by Miss Universe Organization, Miss Universe was founded in 1952 by Pacific Mills, a clothing company based in California. Before it was acquired by Donald Trump, the pageant is part of Kayser-Roth and then Gulf+Western Industries.

Miss World is a London-based pageant created by Eric Morley in 1951, making it the oldest surving international beauty contest in the world. Since Eric Morley's death in 2000, his wife Julia Morley is now the chairman of Miss World Organisation.

Jennifer Cortes, Binibining Pilipinas-Universe 1978, said: “Seems the Philippines has become a powerhouse (in the pageant scene). Lots of people are getting envious. Sad about the personal attacks, but we are a country of beautiful people.”

Miriam Quiambao, Miss Universe first runnerup 1999, quipped: “I have nothing to say (to those critics). Let Megan show the world how great she is as a Filipino woman. Meanwhile, let’s all do our best to uplift our country by giving nobility to our jobs…wherever we are. This is a call for everyone to step up and show the world that we are kind, God-fearing people.”

Fashion model and Miss Visayas-RP 1976 Bessie Badilla quipped: “They are just sore losers. We shouldn’t waste our time on them. Let us enjoy Megan’s victory and ignore those who do not wish to celebrate with us.”

Filipino beauty queens have come to Young’s defense against the Facebook hater and other bashers.

Gemma Cruz-Araneta, Miss International 1964, asked pointedly: “What’s wrong with being a maid? Is that a crime?”

Melanie Marquez, Miss International 1979, told the Inquirer: “To all her detractors, bless your hearts. That’s all I can say. I am proud of and grateful for Megan’s simplicity and golden heart.”
#18251
The post has since been taken down from the social networking site. Inquirer tried to reach that Facebook user, who is alleged to be based in Singapore and studied at Manchester University, for comment but has not received a reply at press time.

Soon after the racial slur went online, a hate page attacking the Facebook user was put up on Tuesday, gaining 11,068 “likes” in a matter of hours.

Scriptwriter-actress Bibeth Orteza asked on Facebook: “But is DeDiva even her real name? Is that a surname typical from that part of the world…a cowardly pseudonym…or a play on ‘diva?’”

MANILA, Philippinesâ€"Don’t mess with a beauty queen from the Philippines.

thought she's studying at manchester in london (came across that in her old facebook account).  but there are more things about this aberration---

Philippine Star describes her as “a graduate from an American university”. No additional information about the woman’s nationality, education background or work was given.

The Philippine Daily Inquirer withheld her name and described Devina as a “Singapore-based woman”.

ABS-CBN News said “DeDiva used to attend Manchester University”.

The woman’s LinkedIn account indeed shows she’s based in Singapore and currently working as a “Lab Analyst” at Intertek Testing, a Singapore-based company that provides laboratory testing, outsourcing, consulting, cargo inspection and certification services for global clients.

Her Facebook account says nothing about her ‘basic information’. [UPDATE: Devina's Facebook account has been deactivated as of 5:57 in the morning, Oct. 2, Manila time].

Her Wayn.com account states: “Hi, my name is Devina DeDiva. I’m 26 year-old Singaporean female, currently in Singapore, Singapore. I have 33 friends around the world.”

however highly you regard yourself and lowly you think of filipinos like me, it will not change the fact that you are an immigrant in england whose own skin color will never change no matter how you pretend to take on the english stiff upper lip.  you will remain a presence that will be continually stereotyped along racial lines and subjected to slurs as well.  why you never learned empathy from your own experiences smacks of arrogance, unfounded and wholly thoughtless.

think what you may in keeping with your ignorance.  we may be filthy maids who "will be only of that status", but then most of us who may stand beside an indian like you will definitely look cleaner, with our cleaner-looking skin, more proper grooming, and personal habits that keep us from smelling like stale onions, a smell that you may be too familiar with as you're too familiar with the smell of filthy toilets.

Those of u who wrote negatively of my comment I got 1 question- who r u to stop my words when the world is democratic in freedom of speech!!!! - DEVINA DEDIVA

one answer: the world is not "democratic in freedom of speech", however comically you phrase it.  you should be kicked out of that manchester learning institution you claim to attend for not understanding what democracy and freedom of speech mean.  otherwise, you are a shame to the institution, never mind the shame you have bestowed on your family (what poor upbringing you're showing) and your race.

oh, how's this for your kind of freedom of speech?  in case you didn't know, here's a slur for a fellow indian like you, the newly-crowned miss america, nina davuluri:

happy that your kind is taken for a terrorist?

right, though in keeping with your poor english, you got the whole sense mixed up.  maids are not to be looked upon; maids are not to be looked down on, maids are to be looked up to.  that's being humanistic.  and educated.  a far cry from what you are.

if ever we seem to be less privileged everywhere (as if you've been everywhere, phew!), it's only because of attitudes such as yours that seem to have been taken from a page of the middle ages.  do you realize that we're now in a civilized world?  where are you from, really?  the sewers of london?  you seem to have this fetish for toilets, that's why.  you must have been born in one.

Miss Philippines is Miss World? What a joke! I did not know those maids have anything else in them Ha Ha Ha - DEVINA DEDIVA

now you know, and the joke's on you. ;D

if you haven't been to the philippines, you certainly are not in the position to judge the country.  come here for a taste of civilization and great smiles.  who knows, you may just see how some indians make a living as shylocks.  (read up on shakespeare so you'll know who shylock is.)

but unlike you, the indians here are a great people.  they make great friends.  it's strange how you can pretend to be on a perch looking down when you yourself must be suffering racial slurs where you are.  passing it on to make yourself feel better?  cheap.
#18272
yes, there are indians who stood up for filipinos and spoke against her.

take note that this is not about a whole nation or a whole ethnic race, far from what this particular her royal highness wretch who made brash generalizations about filipinos.  this is about only one person, just this person in whom education is apparently wasted.
#18274
let me tell DEVINA DEDIVA what maids are.  they fulfill jobs that some people don't like to do or have no time to do.  it requires patience and selflessness.

in my country, it is required that maids get all the privileges of any other form of employment, with membership in life, health and housing insurances and the expected pensions.  is this the same in your own country, whichever country you claim as yours now?

being a maid is an honorable calling.  if this is beyond DEVINA DEDIVA, judging from her stated disbelief that something more could come from maids, then she doesn't know what the word "honorable" means.  but watch out, DEVINA divine, there are filipino maids in britain with college degrees under their belt whose english grammar is better than yours, mind.
#18275
eh, nausab man ang spelling, nahimo mang devina dediva, sa ubos dapit.

kulam na lang kay barato-barato, hehe.
#18276
oh, before i forget, you bashed an elegant model and actress whose size will make you drool.

and she comes from a nation of maids, you say?
#18277
you bashed her with a racial slur without sparing the nation that she represented to boot.

no comment.
#18278
and this is you, again?

um, you're too thick, especially in the middle.  you can never even make the first step on a modeling ramp without causing a sinkhole that can swallow you whole.  and please, do something with your hair before they hire you as elvira in a cheap vampire movie.
#18279
this is you, DEVINA DEDIVA, right?

what a pose; trying too hard to look charming when you only end up reminding viewers of a cow who can no longer produce milk, with tortured tits to boot.  and what ghostly eyes you've got!  are those really eyes  or are they mere sepulchral remains of what used to be eyes that didn't see beyond the horizon of your nose? ;D
#18280
kudos too to pikoy and reyceniza and some others here who are currently in the middle east!  behave there, you, okay? :)

Quote from: Lorenzo on October 01, 2013, 03:11:55 PMwith 3500 riyals a month, my father was able to send all 6 of his siblings to school and pay off our family house in tagbilaran. he had to take over the responsibility of 'man of the house' after his father passed away when dad was only 21.

so, saudi arabia, was a blessing for dad. and my paternal side.

a choice made by one so young, whew.  kudos to your dad.  the loneliness he must have suffered must have been well worth it.

they also give super bonuses for pinoys who convert to islam. dad said that his boss, almost everyday, would put a quran on his desk and say, "mohandis, we will give you a raise if you convert. please think it over."  (mohandis is the arab term for engineer).

anyways, dad used to have religious talks with them and reiterate christ's importance.

sabi ni dad his boss said to him, "if you were a muslim, you could be an imam." haha. buanga.

dad had a friend, from cebu city, who converted. he was given a substantial raise. from 4500 riyals a month to 6000 riyals a month.

pero muslim ra saudi, when this friend went back to cebu, na catholic na pod. ;D

cool.  cool cebuano, hehe.  adjustable.  your dad's boss must have been a dyed-in-wool muslim, he saw the world only in terms of one religion, his own.  sounds like the exception rather than the rule...

i wish i caught her facebook before these particular entries of hers were deleted.  (but then, i'm not much for facebook to begin with.)  but for purposes of discussion, let me take her on in this forum and hope this finds her way to her ghostly eyes.  allow me to open another thread for her... devina dediva, here i come! ;D

tinuod bitaw. 'paki' is a racist term the white brits call south asians there. its a super insult daw. :P

without prejudice to the real good indians... some are great and truly nice.  for expressing her views with prejudice and slurring a whole nation, this devina dediva is just an aberration, a raw ulcer on an otherwise smooth skin.
#18285
Quote from: Lorenzo on October 01, 2013, 02:50:42 PMa white engineer they'll pay around 5,000 to 6,000 riyals
a filipino engineer they'll pay around 3,000 to 4,000 riyals
an indian engineer they'll pay around 2,500 to 3,000 riyals

it's the same until now, though my understanding is not so much the race or the color of skin but the qualification, experience, and the level of position in a firm.  the british (almost always, most are british or europeans) just happen to be more qualified and more experienced.  (the arabs can afford to get the best and the brightest from the west, so to speak, while the professional filipinos who go there are almost always young and just starting, in their twenties like your father.  the older and more experienced filipinos tend to leave and go to the west, again like your father.)

paki (short for pakistani who are ehtnically the same as indians) was used by prince harry earlier, for which he was upbraided. ;D

devina dediva and megan young

no comment.
#18290
too bad her racial slur comes on the heels of nina davuluri, an indian-american who is this year's miss america and who herself has been subjected to racial slurs.  imagine how indians reacted to that.  does devina dediva, this indian who slurred the philippines' miss world, ever read?
#18291
i was curious, loll.  so i checked.  too bad i can't see her photo.  i went to facebook and got an idea of how she looks.  she can't hold a candle beside megan young, obviously.  that's why she's barking at a shining moon.

my understanding is she's indian.  and she's supposed to be attending manchester u.  so she must be based in england then.

first things first; indians experience worse racist slurs in england.  what better way for her to cope than to express her self-pity through an ignorant pecking order?  for her, if indians are less than the brits, well, filipinos are less than indians.

she's supposed to be matriculating at manchester u?  she's one great sign of the gross failure of education.  never mind her grammar, which i found in great need of polishing.

how fast time flies (circa late 1980s early 1990s, i think):

tita,

inom og gatas. da hyperalkalinity of gatas will cancel out the hyperacidity.

thanks, lorenz.  drat, we don't have milk at the moment.  i've avoided dairy products since my sister's big C.  i read somewhere, more than once, that cancer cells feed on dairy products.  (time was when i can't imagine not having any cheese, even if it smells of worns socks.)  what do you think of this?
