A random survey of people working in Makati City done by marketing communications company Campaigns & Grey revealed the following kuripot ways of Pinoys. They range from the sensible to the almost-ridiculous. Read on and tell us if you can relate to any of these thrifty moves.

1. You're a proud sale hunter. You wouldn’t mind waking up early to line up for the year-end sale of your favourite luxury shop just to get quality items with a red price tag. You spend hours reading countless reviews about the deals online to get the most out of your hard earned money.

2. You do the TGIS, which stands for "Tiis Gutom Ipon Salapi."  You keep your food cravings in check until you finally save up enough for that expensive high-quality bag you’ve been dreaming about. After all, cup noodles come in different tasty flavors, so the sacrifice isn’t too bad!

3. You hang out with a senior citizen. Asking your mom on a date is your way of saving money. You make her order the turkey dish you’ve been dying to try at that lavish restaurant. When food shopping, you ask her to bring your grocery cart to the cashier. And voila, you get 20% off the price tag. Mommy is the coolest ever!

4. You practice "re-gifting." It’s the birthday of your grown-up inaanak but you’ve used up all your spare cash to buy a direly needed piece of appliance. You look through your stuff to find a copy of that best-selling novel you got last Christmas â€" it’s in perfect condition! While wrapping it, you think, “After all, I received three copies of that book from my booklover friends!”

5. You're a budget traveler. You don’t mind staying up practically all night just to be among the first to avail of that Piso fare promo for your next travel destination. You call up friends abroad and invite yourself to stay at their house just to save on hotel costs. You pack only a few re-usable clothes so your luggage can accommodate canned goods that will tide you through your trip.

5. Fleas aren't picky: When dogs have fleas, it's more likely they'll be what are called "cat fleas," or Ctenocephalides felis. As for cats, they're more likely to have cat fleas, too. There is a "dog flea," but it's nowhere near as common. The reason "cat fleas" are named after our feline companions is pure coincidence: They were found on a cat when they were first named, in 1834. And, yes, modern flea control from your veterinarian will control these heinous hitchhikers on both cats and dogs.

These are just the tip of the iceberg. I'll share more bits of canine trivia another time. Hope you enjoyed these!

4. Doggie dreads: If you let the hair of Poodles grow, it will form dreadlocks. While not common, Poodles with "cords" do turn up at dog shows now and then, and they always attract attention. While pet Poodles are typically kept in a short "puppy clip" and show Poodles are groomed for fluffy, big hair, there are breeds who cannot be shown competitively without their cords: the Puli and the Komondor. In Europe, the Bergamasco is shown not only corded but also matted, with what look like large pieces of felt hanging from his pelt. Cords are impractical for pet dogs, which is why these breeds are often shorn of their distinctive coats when they're retired from showing. A few years back, a top-winning American Komondor was shaved down, losing 2,700 cords and 15 pounds in the process.

3. First-aid cream is better: The idea that a dog's saliva has healing powers has been around at least since the ancient Greeks and Romans, whose physicians believed it to be an antidote for poisoning. Later, St. Roch was often pictured with a dog licking a sore, reflecting the belief that the patron saint of plague victims knew something about a cure and that his dog's saliva made him healthy. Modern medicine, no surprise, doesn't look kindly on such theories. And by the way: Dogs are attracted to open wounds because the serum from them is sweet.
#18206
2. Guard dog on duty: The phrase "Beware of Dog" is so old that its Latin equivalent - "cave canem" - has been found on signs in Roman ruins. The word "watchdog" isn't quite so old; the first mention of it is by Shakespeare, in The Tempest.
#18207
1. The origin of dog tags: Putting collars on dogs is an ancient practice, but dog licenses are much more recent. In the United States, at least, the practice is a little more than a century old, and it started in Cincinnati, Ohio. Charging dog owners to license their pets caught on with other cities as well and was so common that by the time American soldiers in World War I were issued ID tags, they reminded everyone so much of what dogs wore that they were humorously called "dog tags," a term that sticks to this very day.

While most of the country has had a hot streak or two this summer, those weren't officially "dog days" unless they occurred in late July or August - at least in the Northern Hemisphere.

That's because the term "dog days" refers to a period when Sirius - the "dog star," part of the constellation Canis Major - is brightest in the summer sky. The ancient Romans marked these days from July 23-24 to August 23-24, noting that they were typically the hottest days of the year. Eventually, the phrase "dog days" came to mean any hot streak in the summer.

Did you know that? The reason I did is because I love learning new things. I always have, and I hope I always will. I've always clipped interesting stories from newspapers and magazines, and in a way I still do, although these days I usually snap a picture with my smartphone and send it to friends and family.

I've gone through my files - and two of my own books - to find five tidbits worthy of being part of a Trivial Pursuit edition just for dog lovers. (And, yes, I'll put together one for cat lovers, too!) Hope you enjoy these!

Penalty point for passivity?

Enough stalling! As in my new fighting federation, the World Combat League, which we are hoping will be seen in 100 countries during this second season, there are penalties for passivity.

So would I have beaten Bruce Lee in a real competition, or not? You’ll forgive me for answering with another Bruce-ism, “Showing off is the fool’s idea of glory.”

What I taught him â€" what he taught me

Bruce Lee learned from everybody. He had a very open mind. He never believed in only one martial arts style, or that one was superior. He believed that everything had strengths and weaknesses, and that we should find the strengths in each method. He worked out with me, as well as Joe Lewis and Mike Stone. He ascertained skills from all of us, as we learned also from him. And, in doing so, he added it to his repertoire of techniques, as we all did.

When I first started working out with Bruce, he only believed in kicking below the waist, from his training in Wing Chun. I encouraged him not to limit himself and at least develop the ability to kick high, whether he used it or not. I started to do my spinning heel kicks and hitting the pads. Then Bruce started doing it. In six months he could kick as well as anyone.

It’s strange to look back on those days. They seem so near, yet so far away. It’s difficult to believe that it has been 35 years since that martial arts legend left this earth. I miss my friend. I know many of you do too. I hope all the endeavors to memorialize his greatness are successful.

A genius and champion

The truth is Lee was a formidable opponent with a chiseled physique and technique. I totally enjoyed sparring and just spending time with him. He was as charismatic and friendly in the ring and at home, as he was on film. His confidence and wit were dazzling, and sometimes even debilitating to others. Saying things to others like, “A fight is not won by one punch or kick. Either learn to endure or hire a bodyguard.”

Lee was lightening fast, very agile and incredibly strong for his size. He was also a master marketer â€" a fact demonstrated by his ability to talk the world karate champion at the time (me) into being defeated on screen!

However, many today don’t realize he never competed professionally. If he had, I believe he would have been a world champion. Rather, his fame was crowned with the Green Hornet television series. He was then immortalized with such movies as “Enter the Dragon” and “Return of the Dragon,” in which Lee and I fought in the now famous fighting sequence inside the Roman Colosseum.

I enjoy speaking about my friendship with Bruce. It is something about which many don’t know. As I travel the world, it seems that younger people identify me merely with some of the folklore in the Chuck Norris Facts â€" those hyperbolic sayings that elevate my abilities beyond my capabilities. Others view me in light of the character I played in “Walker, Texas Ranger” or in one of my 20 tough-guy films. But, prior to my film and television career, not everyone realized that I was the six-time world champion back then. From 1964 to 1968, I won many state, national and international amateur karate titles. In 1968, I fought and won the World Professional MiddleWeight Karate championship by defeating the world’s top fighters. I then held that title until 1974, when I retired undefeated.

The question of questions

With the mania over this iconoclastic giant, curiosity is once again knocking on even my doorstep. What was Bruce Lee like? How did you meet? What was it like to choreograph the fight scene in Rome with him? Did you spend much time together off screen? These are a small sampling of the inquiries I’m often asked wherever I go around the world.

However, the question probably most asked of me is: Do you think you could have beaten Bruce Lee in a professional competition?

Many have opined about the answer. Some even indicted what I haven’t said. For example, contrary to the Toronto Star’s recent report, I have not admitted that I “would be no match for Lee in a real fight.”
#18233
“The Legend of Bruce Lee,” which is being filmed in China, Hong Kong and the U.S. and contains an international cast, is poised to deliver a fitting veneration to the kung fu king of screen. This television biography might contain fictionalized episodes, but it will resurrect Bruce’s personhood and talents before a whole new generation. It stars Chan Kwok-kwan, who has an uncanny resemblance to Lee, but whose greatest challenge remains to convince the viewing audience of his mastery of martial arts with only a dancing background.

Equally entertaining will be the Warner Bros. remake of the 1973 classic, “Enter the Dragon.” The new film will be titled, “Awaken the Dragon.” It will loosely follow the original, which tracks an FBI agent who investigates a Shaolin Monk and underground kung-fu fighting clubs. Still unanswered, however, is “Who will (or can) play Lee’s character?”

I don’t imagine Bruce could have ever imagined himself on Broadway, but composer and Tony award-nominee David Yazbek is placing him front and center stage through his scores in an upcoming musical based upon Lee’s life.

And in southeast China there is even a $29 million theme park being erected in Bruce’s honor, which will include a martial arts academy and a memorial hall. And just in time with world’s spotlight on the Beijing Olympics.

CHUCK NORRIS

Chuck Norris and Bruce Lee

Bruce Lee is back with a vengeance.

My once good friend in life, fellow sparring partner and martial arts legend has returned to the cultural scenery through the 2008-9 openings of a 40-episode biopic miniseries, a Broadway show, a remake of “Enter the Dragon,” and the creation of a theme park. And news about these events is once again stirring the pot of inquiry and controversy about him, like before his sudden and unfortunate 1973 death at the young age of 32.

REACTION OF HEZBOLLAH

As for the reaction of Hezbollah militant group to the Syria strike, Kassem Kassir, a Lebanese political analyst and writer with close connection to Hezbollah, said "there will be a difference whether the strike is limited or not."

"If it is really a limited strike, nothing will happen, but if it is a big one with effects on the battlefield in Syria, then Hezbollah will react based on the situation on the ground," he explained.

This is the exact fear raised among the Lebanese - What would the Hezbollah reaction be? Would it react by launching thousands of rockets into Israel, bringing back the ghost of the devastating 2006 war?

"The difference between today and 2006 is that all the Lebanese were with the resistance of Hezbollah against Israel. This is why the resistance succeeded," Shehayeb said, adding that "But today, the country is divided and Hezbollah would find itself in an awkward position if it eventually drags the country in an open war. "

BOMB ATTACKS THREAT

Lebanon currently is split into two camps over the Syrian crisis: the March 8 alliance led by the Hezbollah militant party backing the Syrian government, and the opposition March 14 camp led by the Future movement opposing the rule of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Since Hezbollah's involvement in the Syrian crisis, the political division in the country has become sharp. Furthermore, the recurrence of bombings in Lebanon, which left at least 70 people dead and over 894 injured in less than two months, has put people on pins and needles.

It is obvious that if the US attacks Syria, the situation in Lebanon would become more complicated.

While Hezbollah pointed that "(It is) the same hand committed the bombings in Al Roueiss and Tripoli," a former security official told Xinhua that "whoever is the perpetrator ... it is clearly a direct action related to the Syrian crisis."

With growing fears of more car bombings in Beirut and the specter of the looming US strike on Syria, a series of security measures have been taken by the Lebanese authorities.

But those measures "cannot keep the country safe if not backed by a political agreement," the security official noted.

"We should rapidly reach a solution to end the cabinet- formation crisis. We should have a government that would take control as soon as possible, the caretaker cabinet cannot govern," the official added.

BEIRUT (Xinhua) - Lebanon will be significantly affected if the United States decides to strike its neighboring Syria for its alleged use of chemical weapons, analysts told Xinhua.

"Lebanon would be certainly affected by any ongoing incident in Syria, therefore our priority should be confirming our disassociation policy - not be involved in the Syrian crisis and to unite to protect our country from any repercussion of the presumed attack," said Akram Chehayeb, a member of the Lebanese parliament.

The Whole Bushel

In 1997, an armed robber named Isaac Mofokeng was trying to escape police when he ran into the Johannesburg Zoo. While fleeing, he unwittingly jumped into the gorilla enclosure. Max, a 418-pound male gorilla was resting inside, along with his mate, Lisa. Fearing for her life, Max attacked Mofokeng, who shot him twiceâ€"once in the shoulder and once in the neck. Unfazed, he grabbed the robber, knocked the gun from his hands, and pinned him against a wall, biting and thrashing Mofokeng.

Police arrived shortly after and tried to free Mofokeng, who was in danger of being killed. Two of the policemen were attacked by Max as well. (He bit one of them on the buttocks to keep anyone from feeling left out.) Authorities subdued the gorilla and took him to a local hospital, where they removed the bullet from his neck (but left the bullet in his should because they felt it would be too dangerous to operate on). After making a full recovery, Max became a national icon for those fed up with the incredibly high crime rates in South Africa.

He was given an honorary bulletproof vest, which was a few sizes too small, by the local police and became a spokes-gorilla for crime prevention and awareness. He was hugely popular at the Johannesburg Zoo, where he lived the rest of his life, until he died peacefully in his sleep in 2004. (Mofokeng ended up being sentenced to 40 years in prison, as he was a lifetime criminal.)

Max, a gorilla in South Africa, was shot when a burglar accidentally went into his enclosure at the Johannesburg Zoo. When Max took the burglar down anyway, he became a national mascot in the fight against crime and was extremely popular until his death in 2004.

The astonished flight attendants then asked a Chinese tour guide for help. The affair finally ended when the guide told the tourists they were hurting China’s image abroad. “Stop hurting the reputation of Chinese people,’’ he said.

The travellers then handed back the tableware, the report said.

The incident follows a number of reports this year on bad behaviour overseas by Chinese travellers. This includes a widely reported incident where a Chinese boy carved his name on a 3,000-year old precious relic during a trip to Egypt.

This prompted China’s deputy-premier Wang Yang to state publicly that Chinese tourists should improve their behaviour overseas.

He said such bad behaviour included Chinese tourists speaking loudly in public, carving characters on ancient relics, and disobeying pedestrian traffic signs.

Last year, US shopping website LivingSocial sponsored a poll which ranked the Chinese at second place, after Americans, as the “world’s worst tourists”. Some 15 per cent of respondents said Chinese tourists were the most obnoxious in the world.

Chinese passengers anger airline staff by refusing to hand over in-flight tableware

Media said a group of Chinese tourists attempted to keep the steel tableware provided by airline crew when they were on an airplane. Photo: AP

In the latest controversy involving Chinese tourists - a group of mainland travellers have upset Singapore Airlines staff by refusing to hand over 30 sets of stainless steel tableware during a recent flight, Chinese media reported.

It was only after repeated warnings from a tour guide that these passengers agreed to hand them back to flight attendants.

The Chinese passengers were on a tour of Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand. While onboard the Singapore Airlines flight,  they had intended to keep the stainless steel knives and forks provided during a meal, the Qianjiang Evening News reported on Tuesday.

The report cited a tourist guide - but did not say exactly when the incident occurred. It said the tourists were mainly from a small town in Zhejiang province.

The flight attendants told the tourists the stainless steel tableware could not be kept because it was going to be re-used - unlike plastic disposable items. But the tourists refused to hand them over. The tourists explained that relatives who had flown with Singapore Airlines in the past told them they could keep the tableware, the report said.

The research lends support to the idea that many behaviors linked to being poor â€" using less preventive healthcare, having higher obesity rates, being less attentive parents and making poor financial decisions â€" may be caused by poverty rather than the other way around.

"It makes you think about the way people behave completely differently," Mullainathan said.

Many programs designed to help the poor require tedious paperwork, inconvenient appointments and the need to make extra financial decisions. Such requirements may undermine their intended aims, Mullainathan said.

Time is a resource anyone can run out of, Johnson said, but there are ways to reduce the burdens, whether it's filling out financial aid forms in advance, sending out reminders for payments, or setting optimal default choices for selecting healthcare.

"Governments and other people should avoid putting cognitive taxes on people whether they're rich or poor," he said. "Making choices easier is going to help everyone."

"Almost like a computer that has some other process running the background, poverty creates this nagging background process and that could itself have an effect on actual cognitive capacity," Mullainathan said.

To see whether the effect was universal, the researchers traveled to India and surveyed 464 sugar cane farmers before and after a harvest.

Sugar cane farmers get paid only once a year. One month before harvest time, cash is running low; one month after harvest, they're flush with funds.

The farmers took the spatial intelligence and a different kind of cognitive control test before and after harvest. When they were strapped for cash, they performed worse on the IQ test and took slightly longer to answer questions on the cognitive control test than they did when money wasn't a problem.

The drop was substantial, Mullainathan said â€" about 9 IQ points.

"It's just crazy," Mullainathan said. "It was the magnitude that really put me on my heels."

For this new paper, the researchers wanted to find out how those psychologically draining situations affected their overall brainpower.

To do so, Mullainathan and his colleagues performed two very different studies on two very different groups of people â€" shoppers in a New Jersey mall and sugar cane farmers in rural India.

The shoppers were divided into groups designated as rich or poor based on their incomes. The researchers prompted them to consider their financial situations by asking them how they would pay for an unexpected car repair.

For half the subjects, the hypothetical bill was $150, a relatively low amount. For the other half, it was $1,500 â€" enough to make a person of modest means do some mental arithmetic.

Then the shoppers took a spatial intelligence test and another that measured their ability to control their impulses. The rich did fine no matter what the repair cost. The poor did OK too when the bill was just $150. But when it was $1,500, their IQ test scores dropped by 13 points.

The researchers surmised that concern about the looming expense had sucked up their brainpower.

There's a widespread tendency to assume that poor people don't have money because they are lazy, unmotivated or just not that sharp, said study coauthor Sendhil Mullainathan, a behavioral economist at Harvard University.

"That's a broad narrative that's pretty common," Mullainathan said. "Our intuition was quite different: It's not that poor people are any different than rich people, but that being poor in itself has an effect."

The problem is that it's hard to devise experiments to test this, said Eric J. Johnson, a psychologist at the Columbia Business School who was not involved in the study.

"In general, you can't randomly assign people to be poor," Johnson said.

Instead, Mullainathan has studied some of the specific consequences of being poor. Last year, he and his colleagues published work in Science showing that when people are forced to focus on a pressing financial problem like a looming utility bill, they develop tunnel vision and ignore their long-term goals.

Poverty can sap brainpower, research shows
Burdens of poverty can lower IQ scores, a study finds, undercutting assumptions that people become poor because they're lazy or lack intelligence.

Whether you're a New Jersey mall rat or a farmer in India, being poor can sap your smarts. In fact, the mental energy required to make do with scarce resources taxes the brain so much that it can perpetuate the cycle of poverty, new research shows.

The findings, published in Friday's edition of the journal Science, indicate that an urgent need â€" making rent, getting money for food â€" tugs at the attention so much that it can reduce the brainpower of anyone who experiences it, regardless of innate intelligence or personality. As a result, many social welfare programs set up to help the poor could backfire by adding more complexity to their lives.

"I think it's a game changer," said Kathleen Vohs, a behavioral scientist at the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management, who wasn't involved with the study.

The body of sexy actress Claudia Zobel, Thelma Maloloy-on in real life, remains intact after 30 years of being buried at the Queen City Memorial Gardens.  JOY TORREJOS

Video footages showed Zobel’s apparently expensive stone coffin housed in a sealed wooden casket and the intact remains of the late actress.

Sator said that if the ground where Zobel’s body was buried as dry and sandy, the body would naturally mummify because it will become dehydrated and bacteria would have difficulty proliferating.

Zobel, whose real name is Thelma Maloloy-on, lost her life in a car accident on February 10, 1984 at the age of 19. She was at the peak of her popularity when she died.

Zobel was known for her roles in risqué films such as “Magdalena Buong Magdamag,” (Magdalena of the Evening) and “Uhaw sa Pag-ibig,” (Hungry for Love) among others.
Zobel was filming “Sinner or Saint” under the direction of multi-awarded Lino Brocka, at the time of her untimely death.

In a television interview aired by GMA News in Filipino, Zobel’s elder brother, Ernesto Maloloy-on, 57, said they were surprised to find his younger sister’s body still intact and not fully decomposed after all those years.

“We were expecting to find a skeleton,” he said.

The startling discovery also posed problems for Zobel’s family as they have to find another plot to bury her remains.

Dr Nestor Sator, a medico-legal officer at the Central Visayas police crime laboratory, said in a GMA News interview that Zobel’s remains was still intact because it had undergone a natural process of mummification.

He lamented that many priests have become content in just “maintaining” the Church, which supposedly has on occasion failed to evangelize effectively and impose morality.

Villegas said the problem is not a shortage of priests but of "zeal."

“The problem is not priest shortage but zeal shortage. We brother priests have failed to inspire our people to imitate Christ. We have failed to lead them to intimacy with him,” he said.

Villegas also said teaching Christian doctrines are not enough if priests failed to connect them to life.

“We have taught the Christian doctrines but we have failed to connect them to life. We know the faith but we do not live it,” he said.

“Our transmission of the faith must inspire our people to imitate Christ,” he added. â€" KBK, GMA News

Saying that churchgoers have a "serious" problem with "long, winding and dry homilies," Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas on Friday discouraged priests from delivering boring liturgies.

“Our youth complain about lifeless and uninspiring liturgies. How can we set their hearts on fire if we ourselves are not afire for God? We must prepare our homilies,” the incoming president of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) said in a statement Friday night.

He also urged priests to stop being "swivel-chair pastors" and instead "(go) out to the barangays and public schools, visit the charity wards of hospitals, teach catechism again, visit homes againâ€"make a ‘mess’ in society.”

Villegas said priests cannot merely stay in churches and become “pastors of status quo” while people are waiting for the Gospel. “This cannot continue. We cannot be swivel chair pastors," he said.

The meal

It is said that there were "Thirty-Two Delicacies", referring to the more exotic ingredients used for the banquet. The "Eight Mountain Delicacies" includes such dishes as camel's hump, bear's paws, monkey's brains, ape's lips, leopard fetuses, rhinoceros tails and deer tendons. The "Eight Land Delicacies" includes several precious fowls and mushrooms, and the "Eight Sea Delicacies" includes dried sea cucumbers, shark's fin, bird's nest and others.

Utensils

The utensils, like the food, were also lavish; the majority of utensils were finely crafted bronzeware, and porcelainware in the shape of many animals were designed with mechanisms for keeping the dishes warm throughout the meal. In general the Manchu dishes were first sampled, followed by the Han dishes.

History

Qing Dynasty

When the Manchus conquered China and founded the Qing dynasty, Manchu and Han struggled for power. Kangxi emperor wanted to resolve the disputes, and held a banquet in his 66th birthday. The banquet/imperial meal consisted of Manchu and Han dishes, both groups also attended the banquet together. After the Wuchang Uprising, common people learned about this royal cuisine. The original meal was served in the Forbidden city in Beijing.

Preparation

The meal was prepared comprising six banquets over three days with over 300 dishes. Altogether there are said to have been 196 main dishes and 124 snack dishes, for a total of 320 dishes sampled over three days. Depending on how the dishes are counted with the samples, at the absolute minimum there were 108 dishes.[1] The emperor, after previewing the dishes, gave the feast its present name. The feast was divided into inner-palace and outer-palace banquets; only the imperial family and meritorious officials, including Han officials above the second rank, were invited into the inner-palace banquets. A book from the reign of Qianlong gives a detailed description of the feast and the dishes and ingredients.

Manchu Han Imperial Feast
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Manhan Quanxi, literally Manchu Han Imperial Feast was one of the grandest meals ever documented in Chinese cuisine. It consisted of at least 108 unique dishes from the Manchu and Han Chinese culture during the Qing Dynasty, and it is only reserved and intended for the emperors. The meal was held for three whole days, across six banquets. The culinary skills consisted of cooking methods from all over Imperial China.

From that point on, both ethnic cultures began to take pride in catering their specialties for the other to enjoy, influencing  each other toward harmonious co-existence, and finally developing into the expectation of hospitality that has become integral in Chinese culture today.

The Manchu Han Imperial Feast was more than just a lavish buffet of food, it was the pinnacle of culinary art and aesthetics. The banquet was a feast of both sight and taste, with great pains made by the chefs to create dishes that were visually enticing as well as savory and delicious. Dishes were laid out with great fanfare and even given poetic names, such as water lily crisp, peach-shape birthday cake, golden thread porridge and so on.

It is believed that many of the actual recipies for dishes at the Manchu Han Imperial Feast failed to be handed down and have been lost, while other recipes used ingredients such as exotic plants and animals which are now protected. As a result, even though some five-star hotels claim that they serve a recreation of the Manchu Han Imperial Feast, many of the recipies and dishes are modified from their predecessors.

A legendary banquet, as grand as you can imagine, only for the emperors of ancient China.  Six meals a day for three days, with as many as 108 courses, including 134 hot dishes and 48 cold ones. That is Manchu Han Imperial Feast.

When the Manchus conquered China and founded the Qing dynasty in 1636,  the disempowered Han people were demoted to lower ranking posts across the kingdom and a latent social power struggle between Manchu and Han peoples emerged. In order to resolve the dispute and further promote peaceful integration between the two groups, Emporer Kangxi held a magnificent banquet for his 66th birthday.

The banquet consisted of exotic and marquee dishes of Manchu and Han cuisine, and select court officials from both ethnic groups were invited to attend the banquet together. This opulent show of culinary skill and decadent feasting established a bridge between the two groups and contributed to a binding sense of unity that strengthened the imperial court, and the country as a whole.

The report said the performers were accused of taping themselves performing sex acts on each other and attempting to sell the videos. The same report said some of the performers were arrested with bibles, a banned book in North Korea.

An expert on North Korea told The Daily Telegraph it is more likely they were killed for “political reasons.”

“If these people had only made pornographic videos, then it is simply not believable that their punishment was execution,” Toshimitsu Shigemura, a professor at Tokyo’s Waseda University, told The Daily Telegraph.

Hyon’s popularity reached its zenith (in North Korea) with the 2005 single A Girl In The Saddle Of A Steed , also known as Excellent Horse-Like Lady.

The band’s other patriotic hits include Footsteps of Soldiers, I Love Pyongyang, She is a Discharged Soldier and We are Troops of the Party.

South Korean news sources are reporting that singer Hyon Song-wol, reputed ex-lover of North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, was among a dozen artists who were executed for violating anti-pornography laws.

South Korea’s Chosun Ilbo newspaper said Hyon, a singer with the Unhasu Orchestra, was arrested with 11 others on August 17. All 12 were machine-gunned down by a firing squad three days later, while members of their immediate family were forced to watch, the paper reported.

The family members were then sent to prison camps.

"Memory", is a show tune from the 1981 Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Cats sung by the character Grizabella, a one-time glamour cat who is now a shell of her former self. The song is a nostalgic remembrance of her glorious past and a declaration of her wishes to start a new life. Sung briefly in the first act and in full near the end of the show, "Memory" is the climax of the musical, and by far its most popular and well-known song.

The lyric, written by Cats director Trevor Nunn, was based on T. S. Eliot's poems "Preludes" and "Rhapsody on a Windy Night". --Wiki

Memory

Daylight
See the dew on the sunflower
And a rose that is fading
Roses whither away
Like the sunflower
I yearn to turn my face to the dawn
I am waiting for the day . . .

Midnight
Not a sound from the pavement
Has the moon lost her memory?
She is smiling alone
In the lamplight
The withered leaves collect at my feet
And the wind begins to moan

Memory
All alone in the moonlight
I can smile at the old days
I was beautiful then
I remember the time I knew what happiness was
Let the memory live again

Every streetlamp
Seems to beat a fatalistic warning
Someone mutters
And the streetlamp gutters
And soon it will be morning

Daylight
I must wait for the sunrise
I must think of a new life
And I musn't give in
When the dawn comes
Tonight will be a memory too
And a new day will begin

Burnt out ends of smoky days
The stale cold smell of morning
The streetlamp dies, another night is over
Another day is dawning

Touch me
It's so easy to leave me
All alone with the memory
Of my days in the sun
If you touch me
You'll understand what happiness is

Look
A new day has begun

Ms. Lim-Napoles’ surrender to Mr. Aquino occurred after her meeting Wednesday night with Edwin Lacierda, a presidential spokesman, in a Manila cemetery. The president assured her of her safety and said she would be given due process in her defence.

Thursday, Mr. Lacierda denied the woman had received special treatment by being allowed to surrender directly to Mr. Aquino, pointing out other high-profile fugitives had turned themselves in to presidents.

“Let me just say that the president is an honourable man,” Mr. Lacierda said.

“It is in our culture that if the fugitive throws himself at the mercy of the highest official, the president is honour-bound to secure and receive the fugitive.”
