I'm glad to note Mike is smiling  ;)
True mark of a strong, brave son.

Me too, Gec, me too!  If I didn't see him lastnight smiling with his beautiful mother, I would always think of the Mike I imagined in his thread - I sat down in the hospital and wept.

I am a Boholana, married to an authentic Kenyan guy and living in America.  Doesn't it sound head-spinning enough?  Technically, I have to adjust to the culture of America and to my husband's culture but good to know we are experiencing both and it wasn't bad at all.

English as the spoken language is not a problem.  I guess I can talk well especially if I am mad. heheheh Kenya was colonized by the Brits but my husband has kind of eliminated already his ala-Simon Cowell accent by the time we met although there's still a little accent of their local and national language, Kikuyu and Swahili, respectively.  I guess he is also having this little problem with me.  One time I said twenty (for $20), and he said huh? I said, twentie! hahaha He figured it out, he said, ah twenie!  Like I also said, Sacramento, he smiled and he said, Sacramenow!  Why do they have to put "t" in Sacramento if they are not reading it!  I commented like Americans don't read and speak right! hahahah In fairness to him, he is learning Bisaya so good!  When I am jabbering with my sisters and aunt, he would observe then ask about it and would use the words in as much as he could.  I do the same too!  I surf the net and learn new terms.  I say I love you to him in Swahili - Nakupenda! or Asante for Thank you!  I also cook for him his native dishes (courtesy of gogole) to his surprise!

Overall, we didn't really have a hard time adjusting with each other.  If there adjustment to make, it wasn't because of our differing cultures but of the issue of "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus".  I am a headstrong woman so that's already an issue. heheheh

Oh, I remember one that was the first sign of difference in our table culture which was easily corrected/adjusted.  The first dinner I prepared, I had spoon and fork on the table.  After saying grace, he wasn't eating yet.  He said I missed some things: the knife and the soup for the spoon.  I said we don't have soup!  Here, they just use fork and knife and the spoon is just for soup.

Inspiration & Hope / Re: Please Yourself First
November 06, 2007, 10:30:33 AM
I'd say it's stupidity or maybe misguided ideology!  I still can't fathom the thought that these suicide bombers actually believe that they are secured of space in heaven (note:  we also have heaven thread) if they kill themselves, bringing with them innocent people - young and old and leaving behind distruction of properties and most importantly distruction of lives of the families left behind?  What do they think their God is?  A sadist?  It's only God who has the complete volition of our lives and not suicide bombers or bad elements who kill people.

Kumbaga, we kind of think man gud ba na since we can not beat the corrupt system, we might as well join them!  Basta ako, I will always be hopeful na people will change for the better - if not for our generation to enjoy but for the generations to come.

It should have been last week but the Congress here "tinkered" the clock and postponed the changing of time to last night to save more power. A lot of people still followed the last-weekend-in-october change thus adding to the confusion kay naa may ubang mga electronics na nka configure pa for that sked of change while others adhered to the Congress' change of changing of time.  (Kadaghan ba akong change oi!)

Question and Answer / Re: Heaven
November 05, 2007, 06:11:12 AM
Sorry guys, this is kind of long but let me just share this to all of you.  I got this from one of those forwarded emails from a friend.  I don't always take notice to forwarded emails but this one I did notice.  I hope we can reflect our life on this.  Thanks!

Once upon a time there was this girl who had four boyfriends.

She loved the 4th boyfriend the most and adorned him with rich robes and treated him to the finest of delicacies. She gave him nothing but the best. She also loved the 3rd boyfriend very much and was always showing him off to neighboring kingdoms. However, she feared that one day he would leave her for another. She also loved her 2nd boyfriend. He was her confidant and was always kind, considerate and patient with her. Whenever this girl faced a problem, she could confide in him, and he would help her get through the difficult times. The girls 1st boyfriend was a very loyal partner and had made great contributions in maintaining her wealth and kingdom. However, she did not love the first boyfriend. Although he loved her deeply, she hardly took notice of him.

One day, the girl fell ill and she knew her time was short. She thought of her luxurious life and wondered, I now have four boyfriends with me, but when I die, I'll be all alone.' Thus, she asked the 4th boyfriend, I loved you the most, endowed you with the finest clothing and showered great care over you. Now that I'm dying, will you follow me and keep me company?' 'No way!', replied the 4th boyfriend, and he walked away without another word. His answer cut like a sharp knife right into her heart. The sad girl then asked the 3rd boyfriend, 'I loved you all my life. Now that I'm dying, will you follow me and keep me company?' 'No!', replied the 3rd boyfriend. 'Life is too good! When you die, I'm going to marry someone else!' Her heart sank and turned cold. She then asked the 2nd boyfriend, 'I have always turned to you for help and you've always been there for me. When I die, will you follow me and keep me company?' I'm sorry, I can't help you out this time!', replied the 2nd boyfriend. 'At the very most, I can only walk with you to your grave.' His answer struck her like a bolt of lightning, and the girl was devastated. Then a voice called out: 'I'll go with you. I'll follow you no matter where you go.'
The girl looked up, and there was her first boyfriend. He was very skinny as he suffered from malnutrition and neglect. Greatly grieved, the girl said, 'I should have taken much better care of you when I had the chance!'

In truth, you have 4 boyfriends in your lives:

Your 4th boyfriend is your body. No matter how much time and effort you lavish in making it look good, it will leave you when you die.

Your 3rd boyfriend is your possessions, status and wealth. When you die, it will all go to others.

Your 2nd boyfriend is your family and friends. No matter how much they have been there for you, the furthest they can stay by you is up to the grave.

And your 1st boyfriend is your Soul. Often neglected in pursuit of wealth, power and pleasures of the world. However, your Soul is the only thing that will follow you where ever you go. Cultivate, strengthen and cherish it now, for it is the only part of you that will follow you to the throne of God and continue with you throughout Eternity.

Thought for the day: Remember, when the world pushes you to your knees, you're in the perfect position to pray.

Dong Enzo, that's a very heart-warming story of you and your Lolo.  I missed my grandfather, Tatay Macario too. He was the first person on earth that believed in me - even before I could believe myself.  I think he is in heaven right now and watching over us his family.

Basta I am glad I have another set of family here.  Ginger and Mr. Jun, "decimal point" lang inyong kadaghanon sa amo coz we were 13 (1 died of a vehicular accident) but still gapang accept pa among family ug "honorary" brothers and sisters. All our friends who visit our humble and happy home, you are so welcome to call our parents Mom and Dad too.  Speaking of which, a TB brother is visiting our family later today - hopefully.  When I told Mom about it, first thing she asked was:  "Ging, mag ininglis na sija?"  Intawon sa akong inahan.  Told her, kon ininglisan ka Mi, ingna lang ajaw ko ininglisi Doy!  Heheheh

Question and Answer / Re: Heaven
November 04, 2007, 04:57:59 PM
That's a thought-provoking question, Ms. Asianfairy!  Tama bitaw, we all want to go to heaven but we don't want to die.  I guess we are not comfortable yet with what we have done in our lifetime to assure that we are really going to heaven.  Or, we have bagagges in life that we are not wiling to let go like our family and friends, the comfort in life.  I guess it's also the certainty of life on earth rather than the uncertainty of after-death life.  In other words, we human beings are segurista.  Siguro if somebody can really document with pictures and all, that life after death is really like what we perceived it is to be in heaven, maybe there's no more point in being here on earth ug mag isig pagpakamatay nlang kita.

Interesting topic, Ms. Asianfairy!  Thanks!

grazie7y........He he he plse let me know if it is safe any where in this world anymore other then being put six feet under.....(LOL)!

This Island is becoming highly infested with rebels this past few months the highways are not so safe to travel on not like before.

The police in the interior region are busy with almost daily training techniques and conducting many daily and nightly patrols looking for any signs of trouble from these persons.

The province is having a hard time of issuing fire arms still too many police who are newly assigned to patrol the five interior towns due to no more being available until region seven is able to hand over more equipments for the police to help in combating these horrible persons.

The tourist are a big attraction to them and tourist are like magnets to them as more tourist come in then more rebels come in as well.

Scary indeed.

Hi Precious!  I didn't know of any safer place than in Bohol.  I thought you particularly did not feel safe in Bohol because you said so in your first post in this thread.

I have a young sister who is a police officer, whose equally young husband died in the line of duty.  At times I feel scared for my sister as she is the only surviving parent to my two young nieces and nephew but I remind myself that I should be proud that my sister is brave (as I am not).  I beg to God to keep her safe always.

I had a long day!  Well, I started late - I woke up at 10, went to the Farmer's Market and got ready for the party.  As expected, there was lechon as the center of attraction!  There were pancit, lumpia, other stuff.  That was the birthday party of the youngest son of another Bol-anon friend here, the successful Engr. Emil Mante and at the same time the Baby shower of one of Emil's grandkids.  (who do we give baby shower to? To the baby or the the mother? hmmm, I didn't know that!)  Anyway, after the party, we passed by at the Seafood City and I bought lots of fish!  Danggit, pampano, squid, salmon and grouper.  I also bought butong na lubi!

Ok now, I listen to the wise so I listen to Ms. Bambi and the words of Admin, disagree but don't take it personally.  So nothing personal here!  This is a forum where we discuss our opinion and whatever judgement we have will surely reflect the kind of people we are and the experiences we have in our lives.

Now let's go back to business!  ;)  I think I have come to realize that you Precious is a pitiful individual.  You have been through a lot of bad experiences that make you unhappy and it is bothering you that Happy is happy outside of her country and you seem to know only of one good country but America (reference is your comment:  Your name says Happy girlfriend you are so respected and treated with more fairness in America then what I have been put through here with.)  You said a lot of things which, if I comment on each and every statements you made will have to be as long as a whole book.  But I am not doing that.  You are hopeless.  You have formed in your thick head already your very poor judgement on people and nothing can change that unless, as what we have here in what you kept on claiming always as your country America, you undergo counselling to help you overcome your emotional and psychological impairment due to your bad experiences.  And after that, I am sure, you'll be more loving and understanding person.

Just this one, please!  :D You mentioned about the total of medical bills you paid.  You said you were asked to pay but you paid because, I supposed, you have good heart not because you were asked to.  Also, here's another unsolicited advice: stop keeping a record to your help to needy people.  It loses the essence of generosity.  We may have different religious background and please I don't claim to be superior in my religious maturity because I am so not but let me just share you one of my most favorite prayers and I sing this all the time.  I hope you have enough time to read this prayer by St. Ignatius:

Dearest Lord, teach me to be generous, teach me to serve you as I should,
To give and not to count the cost,
To fight and not to heed the wounds,
To toil and not to seek for rest,
To Labor and ask not for any reward,
Save that of knowing that I do your most holy will.

Peace be with you and all of us here in TB!

Hello Mr. Bene,

Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts to us.  I could say, and I am almost certain I share my views to most that you are one of the icons of knowledge of TB.  I read your posts as I read my favorite authors' books.

Lumine and I are sisters.  Cagayan de Oro has a special place to us, our second home as we spent some good years there - Lumine as a student and I as an employee in one local-based corporation.  Needless to say, Bohol is our first home.  We grew up there and we will always be a true and proud Boholanos.  Someday I will be able to go back in Bohol and retrace memories.

By the way, Lumine's husband Herman is not an American.  He is a Belgian who fell in love with the Philippines the first time he got there.  Of course, it must have something to do with his profound love to my dear sister, Lumine. :D  Herman is a very wonderful man!  He may not be so fluent in conversational English but he well managed to communicate is kind heartedness and his generosity and his love to us.

We all salute all soldiers and other service men and women who risked their lives to fight for justice and peace.  As I said before and I'll say it again, I specifically recognized US Army Seeker because he was the SUBJECT in this thread but it doesn't mean I do not recognize other people - soldiers or non soldiers i.e., medical volunteers.

Talk of the Town / Re: Judge sacked for immorality

First, welcome back Precious!

I agree with you.  It's quite an irony that people who are the lawmakers are the same people who breaks the law.  But as you said, these things are not unique in the Philippines and this stuff happens everywhere (e.g. Bill Clinton with his famos line "I did not have sex with that woman!") but this should not be an excuse either, right?

Uou mentioned about Catholic priests who are charged with molesting kids and other "victims" (as you noticed, I had it in open and close quotation because I doubt some of them but that's another issue.) took a while to come out in the open for shame or fear.  The Catholic church in America, for one, settled millions and millions of dollars for child molestation cases.  But then again, it's not just some Catholic priests who are involved in this horrible behavior.  There are other religious denominations who also had/have similar scandal but not as big as the Catholic since, as we may know already, is the largest religious denomination in the world.  Again, let me reiterate that this is not an excuse for such horrible and disgusting actions.  It's unimaginable how can people say one thing and behave totally the opposite.  Yes, that's plain and simple double standard!

My deepest gratitude to you Gem and your family!  May God bless you in million folds so others may feel God's blessings as well!

Arigato, Benelynne san and Orchids san!

Benelynne san, you really helped me in understanding a bit of the Japanese culture.  You explained it so well.  Salamat po!

I learned a lot from both your posts. It's very interesting and at first, I have to admit that I was appalled by the set up there but when you said Orchids that you talked to your husband about your living condition and spoke out your concerns, he was willing to compromise and respected your wishes.  You were brave and Filipino women should be brave enough to stand for their own right.  I may sound like a feminist but it's really beyond me that women would allow to be treated like that.

I understand, Mr. Bene, that this kind of set up is not only in Japan?  In some ways, traditional India and I think Bangladesh and Arab countries too still thought that men are so superior than women that the women's family had to pay dowry to the groom for "passing on" the responsibility of taking care of their daughter.  In Bangladesh, Bengali women has to practically slave for their husbands just like what you and Orchids explained here.  So I supposed they don't watch tv and how the role of men and women has evolved since bygone years?  I am just a curious Grazie so I may sound foolish with all my questions but I just am - well, curious.

I think the Academy is still so new so at least Oprah or whoever is overseeing the Academy's operations can do corrective measures so this kind of things will not happen anymore in the future.

I wish I have a little wealth jud and I can have a school like this - in bohol.

C2, I know Bambi too but not personally! I am also from Manga and we went to the same Manga Elementary School.  Bambi is a friend of one of my sisters and cousins.  I heard from them that she is a down-to-earth lady. Her mother, Maam Hos, was our elder sister's teacher/adviser all her elementary years.  Maam Hos was the adviser starting from Grade 1 to Grade 6 for a special group of students culled out from section A class.  The Evardones are respectable family in Manga.

Good job, Bambi!  And thanks, Fiel for sharing her story to us!

Babe, I think you understand half of what Orchids is saying here.

Half of what I think you don't understand is that she is saying that if she dies, she will ask St. Peter to send her back to Earth so she can ask her teacher  the answers or St. Peter can give her go signal to call her lifeline!  (Call a friend!) hahahaha

Kapoy nko Babe, we'll just talk over the phone na lang diay! heheheh
