Sept. 3, 2013: You can see the fear and panic in these baby mountain goats' eyes as the storm clouds roll in over the Rocky Mountains. They were playing on the giant boulders 14,000 feet high on Mount Evans in Colorado while their parents grazed nearby. As the clouds approached, they rushed to find cover, jumping from boulder to boulder before heading down the mountain as fast as possible.

Perry concludes:

We need to look at the repetitions in the stories we tell ourselves [and] at the process of the stories rather than merely their surface content. Then we can begin to experiment with changing the filter through which we look at the world, start to edit the story and thus regain flexibility where we have been getting stuck.

According to the King James translation of 2 Sam. 21:19,

And there was again a battle in Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim, a Bethlehemite, slew the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.

Although this translation says Elhanan slew the brother of Goliath, the words “the brother of” do not appear in the Hebrew text. The actual wording of the passage says that Elhanan slew Goliath, not his brother.

The Reality

The real killer of Goliath was Elhanan, who belonged to “The Thirty,” King David’s elite fighting cadre.

The story of how young David armed with only a slingshot and stones defeated a well-armored giant Philistine warrior named Goliath has become one of the most famous tales in all the bible. The slain enemy’s name has become a synonym for “huge” and the phrase “David and Goliath” has become a literary cliché for a confrontation between opponents of unequal strength. Unfortunately, David didn’t kill Goliath, and he wasn’t a youth when Goliath died.

The Myth

And the Philistine [i.e., Goliath] came on and drew near unto David; and the man that bare the shield went before him. And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance. And the Philistine said unto David, Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field. Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hands. And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and drew nigh to meet David, that David hasted, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine. And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth. So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David. Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled. (1 Sam. 17:41-51.)

The Hamdan International Photography Award (HIPA) have announced the winners of this year's competition, which has a grand prize of $120,000 and an overall prize pool of $389,000 up for grabs.

The competition, which boasts having the largest prize money of any photography competition anywhere in the world, featured four categories: 'Beauty of Light', 'The United Arab Emirates', 'Black and White' and 'The General Category'.

His Excellency Ali bin Thalith (Secretary General, HIPA) said: "121 different countries have presented us with 19,000 photographers who in turn contributed 26,000 photographs.

The judges in this season's award were well aware of the difficulty they would face in finding the best photograph in the 'Beauty of Light' category, because of the high standard of photographs submitted this season.

We are satisfied with what has been achieved during this season's award and we hope to emulate this success next season."

yes, friend, with me travel you must.
#18061
to simplify thus:

1.  space and time are relative, that's why einstein came up with his neat theory of relativity, which was further simplified by jack warner of warner bros. with his own theory of relativity---he doesn't hire relatives.

2.  there are no unusual effects of traveling with the speed of light if you just stay within your car

3.  if you look out the window of your car with its headlights on while traveling at the speed of light, the light of your headlights will come back to haunt you.

4.  it is always unsafe to travel at the speed of light.  in the first place, why the hurry?

5.  but if you must travel at the speed of light despite the odds, then travel with a loyal friend.
#18062
eureka!

If you want to know what happens when you are driving at very nearly the speed of light, an answer can be given.  Within your car you observe no unusual effects.  You can look at yourself in your mirror which is moving with the car and you will look the same as usual.  Looking out of the window is a different matter.  The light from your headlights will always go at the speed of light in your reference frame.  It will strike any object in its path and be reflected back.  Everything else will be coming towards you at nearly the speed of light, so the light reflected from it will be Doppler shifted to very high frequenciesâ€"towards the ultraviolet or beyond.  If you have a suitable camera you could take a snapshot.  The objects passing are contracted in length but because of the different times of passage for the light and effects of aberration, the snapshot will show the objects you pass as rotated.  See the relativity FAQ Penrose-Terrell Rotation.

underscoring mine. for a thorough interesting read, this source refers you further to Einstein's biographical notes in "Albert Einstein, Philosopher Scientist" ed. Schilpp
#18063
more:

Questions of relative velocity in relativity can be answered using the velocity subtraction formula v = (w âˆ' u)/(1 âˆ' wu/c2) (see relativity FAQ: velocity addition).  If you are driving at a speed u relative to me and you measure the speed of light in the same direction (w = c in my frame), the formula gives v the speed of light in your reference frame as, v = (c âˆ' u)/(1 âˆ' u/c).  For any speed u less than c this gives v = c so the speed of light is the same for you.  But if u = c the formula degenerates to zero divided by zero; a meaningless answer.
#18064
more about einstein's report from the same source:

In 1905 he realised how it could be that light always goes at the same speed no matter how fast you go.  Events that are simultaneous in one reference frame will happen at different times in another that has a velocity relative to the first.  Space and time cannot be taken as absolute.  On this basis Einstein constructed the theory of special relativity, which has since been well confirmed by experiment.

(underscoring mine)
#18065
Einstein's answer (report) relative to this question in 1896:

"If I pursue a beam of light with the velocity c (velocity of light in a vacuum), I should observe such a beam of light as a spatially oscillatory electromagnetic field at rest.  However, there seems to be no such thing, whether on the basis of experience or according to Maxwell's equations.  From the very beginning it appeared to me intuitively clear that, judged from the standpoint of such an observer, everything would have to happen according to the same laws as for an observer who, relative to the earth, was at rest.  For how, otherwise, should the first observer know, i.e., be able to determine, that he is in a state of fast uniform motion?  One sees that in this paradox the germ of the special relativity theory is already contained.  Today everyone knows, of course, that all attempts to clarify this paradox satisfactorily were condemned to failure as long as the axiom of the absolute character of time, viz., of a simultaneous, unrecognizedly was anchored in the unconscious.  Clearly to recognize this axiom and its arbitrary character really implies already the solution to the problem."(http://math.ucr.edu/)

The general drew on his Dien Bien Phu experience to create the Ho Chi Minh Trail, a clandestine jungle network that snaked through neighboring â€" and ostensibly neutral â€" Laos and Cambodia, to supply his troops fighting on southern battlefields.

Against American forces with their sophisticated weapons and B-52 bombers, Giap's forces again prevailed. But more than a million of his troops perished in what is known in Vietnam as the "American War."

"We had to use the small against the big; backward weapons to defeat modern weapons," Giap said. "At the end, it was the human factor that determined the victory."

"We were not strong enough to drive out a half-million American troops, but that wasn't our aim. Our intention was to break the will of the American government to continue the war." Gen. Vo Nguyen Giap, 1990

Earlier studies and trials suggest that curcumin and turmeric may also be helpful for the following problems, according to the research review cited above:

***Healing peptic ulcers, according to a clinical trial with 45 patients. After 4 weeks of treatment with turmeric capsules (300 mg each, twice a day), the ulcers disappeared in 48 percent of cases, with ulcer-free cases increasing to 76 percent after 12 weeks. Another trial found the spice to be beneficial for people suffering from indigestion or stomach or intestinal ulcers, but not as effective as antacids.

***Fighting respiratory symptoms. In some studies, turmeric oil was helpful in relieving cough, congestion, and asthma.

***Improves wound healing in animal studies.

***May reduce joint pain and inflammation from arthritis.

***Enhances heart health by lowering blood pressure and making cholesterol less likely to clump into artery-clogging plaque, in animal studies.

***Turmeric oil repels mosquitoes.

An even newer randomized study of 45 patients with the painful and debilitating bowel disorder ulcerative colitis reported that after 8 weeks, 43.4 percent of patients treated with a curcumin preparation called NCB-02 (administered as an enema) achieved remission after eight weeks, compared to only 36.4 percent of patients given a placebo treatment.

The research was published this month in the Journal of Crohn’s and Colitis, with the study authors recommending that the golden spice be investigated as a novel therapy for ulcerative colitis.

Fights Inflammation, Gum Disease and Other Disorders

Studies also show that curcumin has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. In fact, another new clinical trial suggests that a 1 percent solution of curcumin (in water) works nearly as well as for killing mouth bacteria as a standard dental mouth rinse (0.2 percent chlorhexidine gluconate or CHX) in 23 patients with chronic periodontal (gum) disease.

The patients were randomly assigned to use curcumin or CHX, while a control group used a saltwater rinse for six months. After one month, the curcumin group showed greater reduction in such problems as bleeding gums, redness, amount of dental plaque, and other signs of gum disease. By the 6-month mark, the CHX group had slightly better results on some measures, and similar ones on others.

Patients taking antidepressants should not stop or change their treatment without consulting their healthcare provider. Also talk to your doctor before taking any type of supplement to make sure it’s appropriate for you. Turmeric may slow blood clotting. Taking it along with medications that also slow clotting, such as aspirin, heparin, or other blood thinners, may increase the risk of bruising and bleeding.

Curcumin and its colorful compounds are found in many foods, including mustard, curry powder, some cereals, cheeses, butter, baked goods, sauces, and many other yellow foods. It is on the FDA’s “generally recognized as safe” list as a food ingredient.

"It is a novel and surprising application for this natural medicine,” study coauthor Dr. Ajay Goel, of the Baylor Research Institute and Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center, said in a statement. He adds curcumin was also used with “excellent results” in an animal study in which it was compared to both fluoxetine and imipramine (an older drug for depression).

The new study, the researchers added in the statement, “provides the first human clinical indication that curcumin may be used as an effective and safe treatment for patients with MDD without concurrent suicidal ideation or other psychotic disorders.” However, further research, including large clinical studies, is needed to rigorously evaluate if the golden spice is an effective therapy over the long term.
