When Fabian returns, everything suggests that he’s on course for redemption, but Diaz has darker things in mind, and the last half-hour give us several unexpected shocks, not to mention a quasi-mystical dream moment that nicely punctures the general realist tenor.

Some previous Diaz films have tended to wander narratively wherever production circumstances take them, partly as a result of his improvisatory, work-in-progress approach to shooting. But Norte is a comparatively streamlined piece of storytelling, as well as stylistically different from other Diaz films.

Instead of the extended tableau-like locked shots, this one has rhythmic editing and elegant camera moves, together with some poised compositions and sometimes vibrant lighting from cinematographer Lauro Rene Manda. And some of the long takes are still there, sometimes mustering huge emotional intensity. Diaz has a reputation as a hard director, but Norte has grace, humanity and narrative verve aplenty, along with intellectual clout - although some Filipino political references may be lost on most viewers.
#18002
The film begins by introducing Fabian (Lucero), a disillusioned young urban intellectual who’s abandoned his law studies and now likes to sit around with his friends talking about existentialism, ethics and the murky recent political past of the Philippines. Another strand follows the family of Joaquin (Alemania), a villager whose broken leg has kept him out of work, bringing his family hard times. What the two men have in common is that they are clients of Magda (Mae Paner), an obese and hard-hearted moneylender.

It’s over an hour into the action that Diaz shows his Dostoevskian cards, as Fabian kills Magda and her daughter - a crime for which Joaquin takes the rap. Fabian now disappears for much of the action - apart from a brush with some well-meaning Christians in Manila - and the film largely follows Joaquin’s life behind bars, tangling with and then befriending prison hard man Wakwak (Soliman Cruz), and Joaquin’s wife Eliza (Bayani) as she attempts to support her family over four years.
#18003
The fact that Diaz is shooting in colour rather than his usual black and white brings this outright maverick, previously resident in the austere margins of the film circuit, somewhere closer to the art-house action. Not that Norte is commercial, but it’s a Diaz film that, despite its formidable length, intrepid niche distributors might for once consider exposing.

The closest comparisons to this leisurely mini-epic are the films of Hou Hsaio-Hsien or perhaps Edward Yang’s A Brighter Summer Day, although in the final stretch, an apocalyptic turn suggests echoes of Bruno Dumont or Carlos Reygadas. But this is very much a Lav Diaz film, with his characteristic narrative turns, however gently he negotiates the chicanes.

Norte, The End Of History
Dir: Lav Diaz. Philippines 2013. 250mins

Raskolnikov goes to the Philippines in Norte, The End Of History (Norte, Hangganan Ng Kasaysayan), which takes Dostoevsky’s Crime And Punishment as a springboard for Lav Diaz’s musings on guilt, will and modern Filipino history. Among adepts of so-called ‘Slow Cinema’, writer-director Diaz is reputed as a marathon champ, his films sometimes exceeding the eight-hour mark. By comparison, the four-hour Norte is a miniature, but it’s also an accessible film, a superb piece of focused narrative that’s more immediately coherent than such digressive pieces as 2009’s Melancholia.

When it comes time to park, the rear of the vehicle folds over the front, almost halving its body length to just 1.65 meters (65 inches).

"They can be parked in every corner of the street and buildings, be it apartments, shopping malls or supermarkets," said Suh In-soo, a professor at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology who led development of the car.

Suh did away with rear-view mirrors by adding tiny digital cameras that show the back and sides of the car on a flat screen on the dashboard. A Windows-based computer system communicates with the driver's smartphone and enables self-parking.

The Armadillo-T cannot legally venture on to the road in South Korea because it does not meet certain mandatory criteria, such as withstanding crashes. Suh said South Korea should relax rules for micro cars, exempting them from crash requirements because of their relatively low speeds.

A video demonstrating the prototype has been viewed more than 780,000 times on YouTube. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DoZH7Y-sR0) (Editing by John O'Callaghan)

DAEJEON, South Korea (Reuters) - With a click on a smartphone, the experimental "Armadillo-T" electric car made in South Korea will park itself and fold nearly in half, freeing up space in crowded cities.

The quirky two-seater, named after the animal whose shell it resembles, may never see production but it is part of a trend of developing environmentally friendly vehicles for urban spaces.

The car can travel 100 km (62 miles) on a 10-minute charge and has a maximum speed of 60 km per hour (37 miles per hour).

The fact that gay marriage and marijuana were legalized on the same day makes perfect biblical sense, because Leviticus 20:13 says: "If a man lies with another man they should be stoned."

We just hadn't interpreted it correctly before.

Asama Assad’s reported shopping binges have also been the subject of scrutiny. In 2012, after a particularly violent time in Syria, the Guardian published leaked emails that revealed Mrs. Assad's penchant for luxury furniture and fixtures, including five chandeliers reportedly worth $420,984 from a shop on London’s King Road. And according to an article published recently in the Daily Mail, she regularly dines on Western food, ordering it in bulk for her three children so they won’t maintain a Syrian diet.

The first lady has even been dubbed a modern-day Marie Antoinette for living a lavish lifestyle at a time when, according to the Economist, 19 percent of Syrian’s live below the poverty line (compared with less than 1 percent before the war). Raised and educated in the U.K., Mrs. Assad, 38, graduated from King’s College London in 1996 with a degree in computer science and French literature. For a brief period, she worked as an international investment banker before marrying President Assad in 2000. As Syria's first lady, she rarely makes public appearances or speeches but her gilded lifestyle â€" for example, reportedly purchasing $6,000 crystal-encrusted Christian Louboutin stilettos while her country is been plagued by poverty and violenceâ€"has been the subject of controversy.

Even the family's children have been dipping into the public eye, which undoubtedly won't help their image. Last month, Assad's 11-year old son, Hafez reportedly posted a Facebook status in which he called Americans "cowards" and challenged the United States to attack Syria.

:P

Then there are those family photos from the Assad's private collection that were released in 2012 and which featured the Assad’s and their three children blowing out birthday candles, enjoying family soccer games and bike rides, and building snowmen. There's even one of the president having his nose tweaked by a child.

SyrianPresidency/Instagram

And no one could forget the March 2011 Vogue magazine article featuring Mrs. Assad as a fashion icon and her family as a peaceful and democratic regime. The story was written after the Assad's hired PR firm Brown Lloyd James to manage their public image (the representative who handles inquiries for the Assad family was not available for comment when Yahoo Shine called). It was entitled “Asma al-Assad: A Rose in the Desert," and included passages such as, "Asma al-Assad is glamorous, young, and very chicâ€"the freshest and most magnetic of first ladies. Her style is not the couture-and-bling dazzle of Middle Eastern power but a deliberate lack of adornment. She's a rare combination: a thin, long-limbed beauty with a trained analytic mind who dresses with cunning understatement." The story triggered national outrage, in part because the magazine ran the profile after anti-Assad demonstrations in Syria, resulting in Vogue pulling the story from its website.

While most of the world focuses on President Bashar Assad's alleged chemical weapons attack in August, his wife and Syria’s first lady, Asma Assad, has been making smaller waves of her own. In light of the president's brutal regime, which the U.N. says has killed 100,000 people and sent millions more seeking refuge in neighboring countries, his glamorous wife has been acting like nothing's wrong â€" Instagramming seemingly inauthentic photos of her on a tour of purported goodwill, shopping for fancy shoes, and even collecting pricey home furnishings.

For starters, her Instagram account â€" which her family launched in July as a reported attempt to gain public approval against the backdrop of her country’s two-year civil war â€" boasts almost 37,000 followers and features smiling images of her greeting children, hugging the elderly, caring for the sick, and working at a soup kitchen (while wearing a Jawbone UP, a popular bracelet that measures movement and counts calories), along with airbrushed photos of her husband waving to crowds of supporters and pushing paperwork while seated at a glossy desk. In July, the U.S. State Department referred to the account as “nothing more than a despicable PR stunt.” And State Department deputy spokeswoman Marie Harf told NBC News of the couple’s social media presence, "It's repulsive that the Assad regime would use this to gloss over the brutality and suffering it's causing.”

Javellana said it was a certain Boy Harmin, a Department of Agriculture employee, who introduced him to Napoles.

Guingona asked Javellana if he and Napoles talked about the millions of pesos in PDAF making their way to her NGOs.
“We didn’t talk about PDAF. I briefed her about Nabcor,” Javellana said.

Upon Guingona’s pressing questions, Javellana said he and Napoles talked about Nabcor’s corn processing center during their second meeting.

“It’s a project of Nabcor,” Javellana said.

Rhodora Mendoza, the former vice president for finance of Nabcor, also admitted meeting Napoles during a thanksgiving event at the Discovery Suites. She said she was invited to the occasion by Luy, who also introduced her to Napoles.

“There were too many people,” Mendoza said when asked if she and Napoles talked about anything during their initial meeting.

Mendoza told the committee that she knew Luy because he personally followed up transactions related to the NGO he headed, the Social Development Program for Farmers Foundations, Inc./Senior Reporter Dale Israel and Inquirer

Coffee shop talk

A former president of Nabcor tied Napoles to the government corporation that the Commission on Audit said was one of the conduits for the release of millions of pesos in pork barrel funds to fake NGOs.

Alan Javellana, president of Nabcor from 2007 to 2009, told the Senate blue ribbon committee yesterday that he met Napoles on two occasions at the coffee shop of the building where the alleged mastermind of the pork barrel funds scam held office.

COA chairman Grace Pulido-Tan last week identified Nabcor as one of the conduit implementing agencies through which P1.742 billion in Priority Development Assistance Funds (PDAF) of senators and congressmen found its way to Napoles’ NGOs.

“We were looking for investors and it’s not only Napoles that I met. There are many other prospective investors for Nabcor,” Javellana said when asked by Sen. Francis Escudero what was so special about Napoles that the president of a GOCC would give her a briefing.

Escudero, who sought the blue ribbon inquiry into the pork barrel funds scam, asked if it meant inviting Napoles to buy shares of stock in Nabcor. “To participate in a joint venture with our projects,” went Javellana’s response.

Javellana said he also knew former Napoles employee and scam whistle-blower Benhur Luy as he followed up documents with Nabcor’s staff. He, however, said that the two were introduced to him on different occasions.

Yapha represented the 3rd district until he ended his three terms in 2007. His rival, Pablo John Garcia, defeated Yapha’s wife, Estrella in the 2007 elections.

Garcia managed to keep his post for two terms until he ran for governor this year.

During the televised Senate hearing, Guingona asked Baniqued: Who were the legislators that have funneled funds through Nabcor?”

To this, Baniqued opened a blue folder and started enumerating the names of the solons which included Cebu’s congressmen.

“The general list that funnelled funds to Nabcor, but does not mean that they funneled the funds through the fake Napoles scams,” Guingona later clarified to the Committee.

It was not mentioned however in the hearing which NGOs where being tied to the names of the congressmen that have “funneled” their pork barrel funds through Nabcor.

Baniqued asked for ample time to allow him to check the list and isolate the congressmen who transacted with Napoles’ fake NGOs.

At yesterday’s hearing of the Senate Committee on Accountability of Public Officers and Investigations or the blue ribbon committee, Honesto Baniqued, president of the National Agribusiness Corp (Nabcor) read the long list of names of congressmen who went through their office, a government-owned and controlled corporation (GOCC).

Senate Majority Floor Leader Teofisto “TG” Guingona III, the committee chairman, however clarified that the names revealed by Baniqued were not necessarily among those who have ties with NGOs affiliated with Janet Lim-Napoles, the suspected brains behind the P10 billion pork barrel scam.

The Commission on Audit in an earlier Inquirer report however listed the non-Napoles NGOs as questionable.

Baniqued said that as of May 21, 2009, their office transacted with several congressmen which included Antonio Cuenco (Cebu City south district), Antonio Yapha Jr. (Cebu 3rd district), Eduardo Gullas (Cebu 1st district), Nerissa SoonRuiz (Cebu 6th district), and Pablo John Garcia (Cebu 3rd district).

Cabangbang also rejected Sanchez’s statement that the NPA was using the “permitted” type of land mines. He said the land mines the rebels used were those that explode when stepped on or pressed by a vehicle’s tire.

Maj. Jake Thaddeus Obligado, civil-military operations chief of the 10th Infantry Division, said the NPA’s use of land mines should be stopped and the rebels should be pressured “to finally respect the ban on these inhuman devices.”

Obligado said the NPA had signed the Comprehensive Agreement on the Respect of Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law (CARHRIHL), which “absolutely prohibits the use of land mines.”

He said despite the signing of the agreement, the NPA continues to use the banned explosives. This year alone, Obligado said, the rebels were linked to 21 land mine explosions.

In parrying Sanchez’s denial, the Eastmincom said a former rebel had testified to the use of biological agents in the manufacture of the bombs.

“Even more daunting is how one of the patients, who was seemingly stable all of a sudden entered a state of shock. We found his leg to be in a severe state of infection, with blackening flesh. A similar pattern was exhibited by another land mine victim who died recently, whose flesh quickly deteriorated and blackened despite heavy antibiotic treatment,” the Eastmincom added.

While fecal bacteria were found on the shrapnel, the Eastmincom said the blackening of the victims’ flesh was the result of “possibly a deadlier venom ingredient.”

“This is no longer the act of a human being. This is simply inhuman. The risk to innocent lives of these land mines has just been increased exponentially by what has been discovered in these findings,” Col. Randolph Cabangbang, Philippine Army spokesman, said from his office in Fort Bonifacio.
#18032
In an e-mailed statement, Rigoberto Sanchez, NPA spokesperson for Southern Mindanao, said “to insinuate that the NPA is engaged in a highly criminal biological and chemical warfare is, indeed, pure invention.”

While he did not deny the use of land mines during the past 40 years, Sanchez said these were the “command-detonated explosives made up of traditional, non-biologically toxic ingredients.”

He said the NPA was also not using banned land mines, not in the recent land mine explosion that wounded seven soldiers in Pantukan in Compostela Valley.

“The seven AFP troops who were hurt in a bomb blast in Pantukan Wednesday were hit by command-detonated explosives and not the falsely reported pressure-type bombs that are banned by international laws like the Ottawa Treaty,” Sanchez said.
#18033
Quoting military doctor Victor Dato, the Eastmincom said laboratory tests showed that the shrapnel extracted from the unexploded land mines and from a soldier wounded by shrapnel in  recent explosion had “Enterobacter cloacae and Streptococcus agalacteiae.”

These types of bacteria are “commonly found in the human intestine,” the statement added.

“This proves that the NPA contaminate these landmines with human or animal feces. We have already had a patient who is a former NPA member who attested to this practice when making land mines,” the Eastmincom statement reported Dato as saying.

The Inquirer tried but failed to reach Dato for elaboration on the alleged use by the rebels of bacteria and deadly toxin in the manufacture of land mines.

DAVAO CITY â€" The military insisted Thursday that the New People’s Army now uses “biological weapons” to further its goal of toppling the government.

In a press statement, the Eastern Mindanao Command based here said laboratory examination of unexploded land mines seized from NPA camps in Southern Mindanao showed the presence of “deadly toxin” and bacteria “not usually found in steel rebars and nails used as shrapnel.”

The NPA unit operating in the region laughed off this claim, calling it “malicious and wildly concocted military propaganda.”

The prosecutor for the Santo Domingo district, Yeni Berenice Reynoso, said the probe was triggered by accusations broadcast on Monday by two local TV channels.

She said Wesolowski "must be investigated and punished in the (Dominican Republic) and not in the Holy See."

Wesolowski's whereabouts are unknown. Local media reports say he left the country in early August.

He is the second Polish priest in the Dominican Republic to be accused of child sex abuse this year.

Dominican authorities are also investigating Wojciech Gil, who was suspended by his religious order in the rural parish of Juncalito in May after local residents accused him of molesting altar boys, according to the church.

Gil was on vacation in Poland when he was suspended, the church said. It is not known if he returned to the Dominican Republic. He could not be reached for comment.

(Additional reporting by Manuel Jimenez in Santo Domingo and David Adams in Miami; Editing by Jon Boyle and Xavier Briand)

Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said the Holy See had started a probe of Wesolowski and that he had been recalled "in the last few weeks," specifically over the pedophilia accusations.

"He has been relieved of his duties and the Holy See has begun an investigation," Lombardi said when asked about allegations against Wesolowski in the local media.

Wesolowski could not be reached for comment.

Weeks after his election in March as the first non-European pontiff in 1,300 years, Pope Francis announced he wanted the church to root out sexual abuse of children by priests and ensure that abusers are punished.

Monsignor Agripino Núñez Collado, a church official in the Caribbean nation, told reporters the Vatican acted as soon as the pope had been informed of Wesolowski's alleged "missteps."

He said Wesolowski faces possible punishment by the Vatican but may be immune from prosecution in the Dominican Republic because a nuncio has diplomatic status.

Dominican Attorney General Francisco Domínguez Brito told reporters the investigation would take into account national and international law, "given his status as a diplomat."

Archbishop Josef Wesolowski offers mass in Santo Domingo.

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Vatican has recalled its ambassador to the Dominican Republic and relieved him of his duties pending an investigation, after local media accused him of pedophilia, a spokesman for the Roman Catholic Church said on Wednesday.

The Dominican Attorney General later announced that a special prosecutor had been appointed to investigate Archbishop Josef Wesolowski, who has been nuncio, or ambassador, in the capital Santo Domingo for nearly six years.

Naraka

Naraka or Niraya is the concept of hell for some branches of Hinduism, Sikhism, Jainism, and Buddhism. While the exact descriptions of Naraka differ between religions, it is a place of punishment based on a soul’s karma. Naraka is only a temporary destination and once the sinners have paid the price for their karma, they are reborn.

It is thought to be divided into several levels depending on the sins committed during life. The number of levels in Naraka varies from four to over 1,000 based on different descriptions. For example, Maharaurava is a place for those who gain at the expense of others. In Maharaurava, the sinner has his or her flesh eaten by a serpent demon known as Ruru. The realm Kumbhipaka is home to sinners that cook birds and animals. They are punished by being boiled in hot oil for the same amount of time as there were hairs on the animals they killed.

In the Hindu and Jain culture, Naraka is thought to be ruled by Yama Loka, the God of Justice. Once a person passes away, their actions throughout life are audited by Loka’s assistant and they are either sent to Svarga (heaven) or Naraka. Unlike Hinduism or Jainism, Buddhists believe that all souls are sent to Naraka to be cleansed of their sins, and no ruler exists to audit people’s actions in life. Regardless of cultural variation, it is believed that souls can remain in Naraka for billions of years until their karma has been restored and their souls may be reborn.

Diyu

Diyu is a version of hell in traditional Chinese culture, and vaguely resembles Naraka. It consists of several levels, with the exact number differing from four to 18. Each level is watched over by a judge and punishments are carried out on sinners based on their actions during life. Chinese culture believes Yama Loki of Naraka was asked to watch over Diyu, where he eventually condensed the 96,816 hells into 10 sections that sinners would pass through before reincarnation. During the Tang Dynasty, this description changed to 134 hells, with 18 levels of pain and torture.

The most common description of the levels includes the Chamber of Tongue Ripping, The Chamber of Scissors, The Chamber of Iron Cycads, the Chamber of Mirror, Chamber of Steamer, Forest of Copper Column, Mountain of Knives, the Hill of Ice, Cauldron of Boiling Oil, Chamber of Ox, Chamber of Rock, Chamber of Pounding, Pool of Blood, Town of Suicide, Chamber of Dismemberment, Mountain of Flames, Yard of Stone Mill, and Chamber of Saw. The worst level of this hell is known as Avici, which is reserved for the worst sinners. Avici is unlike the other levels of Diyu because souls that end up here remain for eternity with no more hope to be reborn. -- http://listverse.com/

Here is my recipe:

Creole Turtle Soup Recipe

Roux:
1 Cup Unsalted Butter
1/2 Cup All Purpose Flour

4 Tbsp Usalted Butter
1 lb Turtle Meat Cut into 1/2 inch cubes
1 1/2 Cup Onion, Finely Diced
1 Cup Celery, Finely Diced
1/4 Cup Green Onion, Finely Sliced
2 tsp Garlic, Minced
2 Fresh Bay Leaves
1 1/2 Cup Fresh Tomato, Diced
1 Qt Beef Stock
1 Pinch Cayenne
1 Pinch Ground Allspice
2 Tbsp Fresh Thyme Leaves
1 Tbsp Fresh Marjoram, Chopped
Salt and Black Pepper to taste
1/4 Cup Fresh Lemon Juice
4 Tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
3 Tbsp Sherry
3 Hard Boiled Eggs, Whites diced, Yolks Riced
Lemon Slices
5 tsp Italian Pasley, Finely Chopped

Melt the 1 Cup of Butter in a heavy bottomed saucepan, whisk in the flour, cook to make a peanut butter colored Roux. Set aside.

In a large saucepan or dutch oven, melt the 4 Tbsp of Unalted Butter over medium-high heat, add the diced Turtle Meat and saute until nicely browned.
Lower the heat to medium, add both types of onions, the celery, and garlic. Season with salt and black pepper. Saute until the vegetables are tender.
Add the tomatoes, season with a little salt so they will break down, cook for 10 minutes.

Add the Beef Stock, Worcestershire, Cayenne, Allspice, and Bay Leaves. Bring to a boil, then down to a simmer. Simmer for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally and skimming off any impurities that may rise to the surface.

Whisk in the Roux, simmer until thickened and smooth. Add the Thyme, and Marjoram, simmer for 15-20 minutes more.

Add the Lemon Juice, 3 tsp of the Parsley, and the riced Egg Yolk, heat through.

Serve garnished with Lemon Slices, Diced Egg Whites, and Parsley. Add the Sherry at the table, about 1-2 tsp per bowl.

Creole Turtle Soup Recipe

Turtle Soup is almost as synonymous with Nola Cuisine as Gumbo, in fact, it probably outsells the Gumbo in a lot of establishments. Unlike the clear Turtle Soups made in other parts of the world, the Louisiana variety is a dark, robust soup, bordering on a stew. There are also Mock Turtle Soups which are good as well, usually made with Beef and Veal. I have more than a sneaking suspicion that most restaurant versions are a combination of the two. Turtles are said to contain about 7 different flavors of meat, so it would be very easy to slip a more inexpensive meat in with the Turtle, I’ve even heard of some places slipping in some Alligator. I always raise an eyebrow when the “Turtle Meat” in some versions is ground, as opposed to cubed, it’s a red flag that says “Probably Not All Turtle Meat Here.” That’s fine though, they still taste delicious, and it would take a very refined palate to tell the difference.

As far as finding Turtle Meat in your area, you may have a bit of a challenge. If you have a great Asian Market in your area, it’s probably your best bet, they may even have them live if you would like to butcher them yourself. It’s a messy business though, with a lot of blood and Post Mortem squirming. No thanks, I buy frozen. If you do butcher your own you will have access to ingredients that squeamish cooks like myself can’t find in the freezer. Calipash and Calipee, and possibly Turtle eggs. Some connoisseurs have said that they can tell if a Turtle Soup is truly authentic by the lumps of Calipash and Calipee in the soup. Calipash is the dull-green fatty substance inside the upper shell (Carapace). Calipee is the light yellow fatty substance attached to the bottom shell (Plastron).

If you can purchase bone-in Turtle Meat, do so! You can Roast the bones and infuse the flavor into your Beef Stock. Roast them in a 400 degree F oven until a nice deep brown, then add them to your Beef Stock and simmer for 30 minutes to an hour.

The report nonetheless stressed that recent government successes “are encouraging and proof that bold reforms and measures can yield positive results.”

Malacanang welcomed the improved rankings as “an endorsement of the President, the brand of transparent and accountable leadership he espouses, and the hard-fought reforms he and his allies have tirelessly pursued.”

Finance Secretary Cesar Purisima, for his part, said “investors in the Philippines now enjoy a playing field that is more stable, more transparent, and more level than it has ever been.”

This, as he noted that the Philippines will no doubt see even greater rises in the competitiveness rankings amid “progress in further solidifying gains of good governance.”

“I fully expect to see the Philippine business environment become even more vibrant, more dynamic, and most importantly, more open and welcoming of opportunity,” Purisima said.

Singapore led the ASEAN countries, ranking 2nd globally. It was followed by Malaysia (24th), Brunei (26th), Thailand (37th) and Indonesia (38th).

The Philippines only posted a better performance than its neighbors Vietnam, which ranked 70th, Laos, (81st) and Cambodia (88th).

The competitiveness report further said the Philippines “cannot afford to be complacent” since improvements are coming from “a very low base.”

It cited as examples how rankings improved but remain in a dire state in transport infrastructure (84th), especially with respect to airport (113th) and seaport facilities (116th).

In terms of labor market, although the Philippines has become more flexible and efficient over the years, it still ranked low at 100th.

The country bagged an overall index score of 4.3 points from a total of 7, an improved scored the report attributed to gains in the fight against corruption.

The Philippines “leapfrogged over the past years” in the index’s institution pillar, where it now ranked 79th. It also improved in ethics and corruption (87th) and government efficiency (75th).

The report lauded the administration of President Benigno Aquino III which it said “made the fight against corruption an absolute priority” since 2010.

“There are signs that these efforts are producing results,” WEF said, adding that corruption had been “one of the country’s biggest drags on competitiveness.”

However, the Philippines still compared poorly to most of the other members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) that are in the WEF list.

The Philippines jumped six places up a global competitiveness ranking but still lagged behind most of its neighbors, a new report Wednesday showed.

The country rose to ranking 59th out of 148 in the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Global Competitiveness Index 2013-2014 from 65th of 144 in the previous report.

This is the fourth consecutive year that the Philippines posted improvements in the global list. It ranked 87th in 2009, 85th in 2010 and 75th in 2011.

The report said for the Philippines, “trends are positive across most dimensions of the Index,” which assesses countries’ business environment and competitiveness.

OMG Awards - Ryzza Mae Dizon (NPPA Images)

Two GMA-7 shows are in hot water. The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) has summoned the noontime show “Eat Bulaga” and its pre-programming, “The Ryzza Mae Show”  to a mandatory conference on Thursday, Sept. 5 “for scenes allegedly insensitive and unfriendly to children.”

MTRCB chair Atty. Toto Villareal  said in an SMS to Yahoo! Philippines OMG! on Sept. 4 that “Bulaga’s” July 29 edition saw one of the hosts spitting juice into child star Ryzza Mae Dizon’s face.

In the August 14 edition of “The Ryzza Mae Show,” on the other hand, a contest winner told the eight-year-old host, “Landing bata ka.”  Ryzza  explained that she’s just a child, and asked the contest winner not to be harsh on her.

“These scenes palpably violate the dignity of the child and have to be addressed by the show’s producer, TAPE, Inc. as well as GMA Channel 7, over which the shows air.  The MTRCB hopes for the cooperation of all those concerned in finding out what caused those scenes, who are responsible, and what immediate and concrete measures can be done so they do not happen again,” Villareal said.

He added that the MTRCB is reiterating its “serious and urgent concern” for children, who he described as “the most vulnerable in media and entertainment.”
