Rudy Fernandez( Daboy )

The star-studded 56th birthday bash of action star Rudy "Daboy" Fernandez yielded touching displays of friendship, inspirational moments and comic relief.

Fernandez, who is being treated for ampullary cancer, appeared in good health and displayed energy and enthusiasm throughout the celebration.

His wife, actress Lorna Tolentino, said that Fernandez'positive outlook keeps her and their entire family going.

The brightest luminaries and most respected figures in local showbiz graced the occasion, including former Philippine president Joseph Estrada.

Estrada, who was one of the country's top action and dramatic actors of his time, said that his only wish is for Fernandez to get well.

Other superstars spotted at the party included Sharon Cuneta, Gloria Romero, Gretchen Barretto, Ruffa Gutierrez, actress and new ABS-CBN president Charo Santos-Concio, and of course, Daboy's closest friends Senator Jinggoy Estrada, Senator Bong Revilla and actors Philip Salvador and Tirso Cruz III.

Smack surprise
Comedy queen Ai-Ai delas Alas provided a comic twist to the occasion when she "ambushed" the former president at the party.

Delas Alas and the 71-year-old Estrada are set to begin shooting their very first film together next month, but the comedienne was determined to give reporters a sample of the "love scene" that she said she's dreaming of having with the former head of state.

"Bakit parang ayaw niyong lumapit ili-lips-to-lips ko kayo? Bakit ayaw niyo? Umiiwas kayo? (Why don't you come closer? I want to kiss you lips-to-lips. You don't like to? Are you avoiding me?)," she asked Estrada, who laughed and pulled away when she told him what she wanted to do.

Still, delas Alas had her way and cameras caught her and the former president touching their lips together.

Estrada went along with the comedienne's caper and said, "Maganda ka pala, 'no? (I never realized how beautiful you are)"

The still untitled film will be Estrada's comeback film after decades of being away from showbusiness.

"Matagal na ako wala sa showbiz kaya ikaw na magtuturo sa akin (I've been away from showbusiness for so long, so you have to show me the ropes)," he told delas Alas.

Sharon's approval
Reporters, meanwhile, didn't let megastar Sharon Cuneta get away without commenting on the buzz about her daughter KC Concepcion and actor and model Richard Gutierrez.

Cuneta said that KC is "not committed to anybody" at the moment and is free to entertain as many suitors as she likes.

She also said that she is perfectly fine about the prospect of Gutierrez and Concepcion getting together professionally or romantically.

"[For KC]to have Richard as one of the friends may konting relaxation sa akin sapagka't nandyan ang Tito Eddie tsaka Tita Annabelle. I have special feelings for the whole family.

"Richard is matino, and sikat and gwapo and more than anything he's a Gutierrez, anak ni Tita Annabelle at Tito Eddie kaya oks na oks sa akin pag yan ang naging nakapareha," she said.

(Richard is a gentleman, he's famous and good-looking and he's the son of Tita Annabelle and Tito Eddie so I totally approve if he and KC end up together.)

Not going to die
The last word and last message for the night naturally came from Fernandez, who reassured friends and colleagues about his condition. "I'll see you again next year, same time, yung place baka iba pero I'm sure magkikita pa rin tayo. Kaya hang on ha, wag kayong nalulungkot I'm not going to die," he said. Former president Fidel Ramos said Sunday that despite the volume, Friday's interfaith rally in Makati City that called on President Arryo's resignation is already a beginning but has a long way to go before it musters enough numbers to force the Chief Executive out of office.

"You must not jump into any conclusion just because it was seemingly well attended. There was a lot of energy but if you’re looking at previous people power events that were successful, resulting in the regime change, I think we are just beginning," Ramos, one of Mrs. Arroyo's political allies, said.

Ramos was referring to two previous popular revolts that resulted in the ouster of former presidents Ferdinand Marcos in 1986 and Joseph Estrada in 2001.

"We are still [not] there. We still have a long way to go. I hope you listen to the homily. It’s all about the truth," said Ramos, who stood as one of the godfathers at the wedding of retired Philippine National Police chief Arturo Lomibao and Jacky Tiu at the Manila Cathedral Sunday.

Mrs. Arroyo was also a co-sponsor during the wedding. She, however, immediately left after the ceremonies while Ramos lingered on.

Earlier, several caused-oriented groups said they are preparing for another big mass action on March 8 to coincide with the International Women’s Day following the success of last week's rally in Makati.

Renato Reyes, secretary-general of Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN), said the protest action will be led by women's group Gabriela and other organizations who want Mrs. Arroyo out of Malacañang.

Reyes said they are still discussing the venue because authorities might try to block participants from going to the site.

The BAYAN official added that they will be meeting with other groups on Monday to iron out all the plans and strategies to avoid being delayed at police checkpoints for the March 8 demonstration.

Reyes said the rally organizers are also set to whether they will let Estrada and former president Corazon Aquino deliver their respective speeches during the event.

The two former presidents are among those calling for Mrs. Arroyo's resignation because of numerous allegations of corruption against her administration.
Police estimated that the crowd at Friday’s rally at more than 10,000 while organizers said it was 80,000.

What is very funny is these Interfaith rally was the closeness of the two former presidents Erap & Cory they seated close to each other and both denounced the ouster of PGMA, As we recalled history in 20 January 2001 PGMA and tita Cory joined hands with other caused oriented groups in dismantling the Erap regime, there is no really permanent friends and enemies in politics the only permanent thing is their personal interest, the crowed on last firday's rally was estimated close to 80,000 people, there was no report of violence as the said rally ends peacefully, PGMA regime now was in trouble as number of sectors in the society increasingly demanded on her resignation, let's find out if PGMA can hold the line until 2010.

Miss You In A Heartbeat -
      Def Leppard

I believe, that there's something deep inside
That shouldn't be from time to time.
I sure found out, thought love was such a crime
The more you care, the more you fall
No need to worry, no need to turn away
'Cause it don't matter, anyway

I miss you in a heartbeat
I miss you right away
I miss you in a heartbeat
'cause it ain't love, if it don't feel that way
oh no

When we touch, I just lose my self control
A sad sensation I can't hide
To love is easy, it ain't easy to walk away
I keep the faith and there's a reason why, yeah
No need to worry, no need to turn away
'Cause it don't matter, anyway

[Repeat Chorus]

Now, I ain't big on promises, I'll be true to you
'Cause I'd do 'bout anything, yeah
for some one like, baby for you

[Repeat Chorus

The junction of Ayala Avenue and Paseo de Roxas in Makati City is swamped by a sea of humanity as thousands of people from all walks of life and political persuasions converge for an interfaith rally to press for the ouster of Pres Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo for alleged corruption in her administration. AFP

Aquino, Erap call for truth and Arroyo resignation

Former Presidents Corazon Aquino and Joseph Estrada on Friday addressed the thousands who had gathered in an interfaith rally in the country’s central business district calling for an end to corruption and also for President Arroyo’s resignation.

Aquino urged the people to continue praying since "God is the one who can help us in these times."

Aquino said she thought she was too old to be involved in political activities, but added the times call for everyone to fight deception and to be involved for truth.

"Akala ko po, tapos na ang aking gawain dahil ang tanda ko na rin po. Kanya lamang, ito ang hinihingi ng panahon na lahat tayo magkaisa upang matapos na itong paglilinlang sa atin at ng malaman na natin ang katotohanan," she said.

Estrada took a dig at Mrs. Arroyo by saying she was "overstaying."

"Alam niyo naman, understaying ako, two-and-a-half years lang. E yung under po, overstaying na. Anong kailangan pag overstaying?" he said, and the crowd responded by saying Arroyo should resign.

He thanked the protesters for standing up for truth.

"’Wag tayong magsasawang ipaglaban po ang katotohanan at ang katarungan," he said.

Calls for truth and Arroyo resignation

The interfaith rally was organized by religious groups, students, business groups and left-wing organizations.

Other personalities seen at the rally include former Vice-President Teofisto Guingona, Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay, Novaliches Bishop Teodoro Bacani, Lingayen-Dagupan Bishop Oscar Cruz, veteran actress and singer Armida Siguion-Reyna, evangelist Bro. Eddie Villanueva. Whistleblower Rodolfo Noel "Jun"Lozada also attended the rally.

Police estimated the crowd at 15,000 as of 4:30 pm. Organizers claimed 75,000 joined the rally, which had as its theme "Manindigan para sa Katotohanan, Katarungan at Pagbabago".

The unity of these groups is "unprecedented," said Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN) chief Renato Reyes said. "This is be the biggest show of force, the strongest message of rejection of President Arroyo."

"Hopefully, it will pave the way for bigger actions in the future. And this will somehow strengthen unity of various groups," he said.

"It’s an interesting marriage of various political and church groups," said Leah Navarro of the Black and White Movement.

"Today’s rally will show that at least there are people and other sectors that are now more interested in what's going on. Business may have been sympathetic before, but now they're all out. The students have been awakened from deep sleep," she said.

Many of these groups, she said, called on President Estrada to resign in 2001.

Some members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, which earlier agreed not to call on President Arroyo’s resignation, also joined the interfaith rally.

"What we’re calling for is for the truth to come out," said Caloocan Bishop Deogracias Iniguez.

Manuel V. Pangilinan, businessman and chairman of Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company, was also seen at the rally.

Security was tight with around 5,000 police deployed and soldiers on standby.

Prelude to bigger activities

Despite the crowd size, analysts said President Arroyo will weather the latest scandal over alleged kickbacks in a government telecoms deal with China's ZTE Corp.

"The political opposition has been relentless in trying to hunt down President Arroyo for some time. They have not had any success in reality, but that won't stop them from doing it," said Mark Condon of risk consultancy Pacific Strategies & Assessments.

"I would certainly expect the political noise to continue."

Public cynicism over another "People Power" uprising as well as the President's careful courting of the military and the lower house of Congress is also helping Mrs. Arroyo's hold on power.

Earlier this week, the powerful Catholic Church stopped short of calling for her resignation, taking the wind out of the opposition's sails.

Investors have largely shrugged off the political noise in Manila, helping the main stock index to finish up 0.55 percent on Friday in contrast to regional losses.

Although the organizers agreed that today’s rally will not make President Arroyo resign, they said that it is only a prelude to bigger activities in the future.

"Not yet," said Reyes. "That is not really the objective of today’s rally. We are coming together [today] to call for change," he said.

"If this will be successful, the unity of various groups will be strengthened," Reyes said.

"We're not expecting her to resign because of the rally. It's too much to ask for," said Alberto Lim, executive director of the Makati Business Club (MBC) "It’s a slow process of building up."

EDSA I "took two and half years," Lim said. "It won't take one rally. We veterans know we have to walk much more," he said.

"It is not a deterrent to us [knowing that President Arroyo will not resign today]," Reyes said.

But today’s inter-faith rally won’t be the last said lawyer Feliciano Bautista, Integrated Bar of the Philippines said.

Bautista recalled how people also did not expect former dictator Ferdinand Marcos and former president Joseph Estrada to step down from office.

"You can never tell. She may come into discernment," Bautista said.

Well-organized

Bautista said various committees were set up for rally. BAYAN was in Ayala Avenue as early as Friday morning to set up the stage. Other groups prepared the program, sound

system, and the positions where groups will march from.

Some were assigned as marshals to guard against "saboteurs" that will try to join them, organizers said.

Former president Corazon Aquino, the La Salle-60, Hyatt-10, and business groups including Makati Business Club started from the Asian Institute of Management in Paseo De Roxas. The United Opposition marched from the Makati Fire Station.

Students and professors from the University of the Philippines marched from a street near Makati Shangri-La.

Sports and Fitness / Pure Foods Giants force Game 7
February 28, 2008, 06:46:28 AM

James Yap returned with vengeance in his eyes after a one-game suspension and engineered Purefoods’ 89-81 victory over Sta. Lucia Realty Wednesday night to force a winner-take all match in the championship showdown.

Yap groped for form early on but caught fire in the final period as he led the Giants to the victory that forged a three-game deadlock in the Smart Philippine Cup best-of-seven title series.

Marc Pingris and Kerby Raymundo pulled off career-high numbers as they also played key roles in helping the Giants keep alive their bid for a record-tying fifth All-Filipino crown to the delight of their cheering supporters in the jampacked Araneta Coliseum.

The two teams take a three-day rest before clashing in a do-or-die tiff Sunday at the same venue.

"We wanted to survive against all odds and that’s what we did tonight," said coach Ryan Gregorio as his troops stayed in the hunt for the coveted crown they last won in 2006.

"It’s just great to have your MVP present on the court if it’s survival time. He showed and led us the way. He carried us to victory in this crucial game. That’s why he’s the best player in the league right now," said Gregorio of Yap’s performance.

"My mindset each game is to help the team. This game is special since we’re playing with our back against the wall," said Yap.

The former UAAP star from UE erupted for 20 points in the fourth quarter and finished with a game-high 30. Curiously, the 2006 MVP winner was 3-of-18 from the field in the first three quarters of play.

Pingris provided tremendous energy, hauling down a career-high 21 rebounds while Raymundo played unselfishly, dishing out a career-best 11 assists.

Sta. Lucia top man Kelly Williams grabbed 17 rebounds but was limited to nine points â€" the first time he finished in single digit in their last 26 games.

"I think they’re (the Realtors) destructed. I saw the balloons in the ceiling. My prayer was for the balloons not to fall down. Probably they thought we’re just gonna roll over and die, but we have a solid heart and we don’t back down from challenges," said Gregorio.

"Game Six is like Game Seven. We’ll be fighting for survival. We showed our survival instinct tonight and we intend to do the same Sunday. We want to end this tourney on top," Gregorio added.

Yap made another promise to again come out strong in the do-or-die set.

The Negrense fired five treys in the payoff period with two highlighting an eight-to-nothing run that moved the Giants in front to stay at 65-61.

From a 71-69 count, Yap rattled in eight straight points as Purefoods gained a commanding 79-70 spread with time down to three minutes.

Non factor the last game, Pingris went to work right in the first half, hauling down 13 rebounds and tossing in nine points as the Giants took a 40-30 lead at the turn.

The Giants established control early, enjoying three 10-point spreads in the first two quarters of play.

The Realtors played the catch-up basketball most of the first half while shooting only 28.6 percent from the field.

Former Senate president Jovito Salonga ( right )

Former Senate president Jovito Salonga on Wednesday filed plunder and graft and corruption charges against President Arroyo before the Office of the Ombudsman.

Salonga, along with civil society groups Kilosbayan Foundation and Bantay Katarungan Foundation, accused Mrs. Arroyo of violating the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act, Anti-Plunder Law and Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees.

The complaint was filed before the Ombudsman around 2 p.m. Wednesday. Salonga said he filed the complaint before the Ombudsman because under the Constitution, the President is not immune to its investigative powers.

Link
• Salonga's Complaint Papers
“Dadalhin yan sa Sandiganbayan. Immunity from suit covers that but by that time nakalipas na ang 2010 and therefore she will become a private citizen…hindi naman siya forever dun lalo na ngayon sinabi na niya, ‘I will step down in 2010,’” Salonga said.

(It will be brought to the Sandiganbayan. Immunity from suit covers that but by the time it would have been year 2010 and therefore she will become a private citizen… she wouldn’t be in power forever especially now after she proclaimed, ‘I will step down in 2010’.)

Salonga said his complaint was based on the President’s admission during a radio interview that she was aware of the alleged corruption involved in the national broadband project before flying to China to witness the signing of the contract last year.

Mrs. Arroyo scrapped the deal early this year amid corruption allegations.

He added that be believes that filing an impeachment complaint against Mrs. Arroyo before the House of Representatives will not prosper because the President purportedly controls the lower chamber of Congress.

The former Senate chief appealed to the Ombudsman to act promptly on his complaint and make recommendations to the Sandiganbayan.

Mrs. Arroyo is facing corruption allegations that stemmed from the scrapped $329-million national broadband network (NBN) deal of the Philippine government with China’s ZTE Corp.

Palace spokesmen: Sad but will respect opinion
Hours after Salonga's case was received by the Ombudsman, Malacañang spokesmen issued separate statements downplaying the former Senate president's complaints and saying that he should not have immediately jumped into the "bandwagon."

"The President as a person who believes in rule of law as essense of democracy will always allow the law to take its own course," deputy presidential spokesman Anthony Golez said.

He also encouraged Salonga to "exercise truthful and diligent circumspection of the issues facing our country."

Golez added that Salonga should respect judicial institutions in seeking for truth before passing judgment to others.

Lorelei Fajardo, another Palace spokesman, meanwhile, had this to say:  "Former senator Salonga, a staunch constitutionalist could have waited for the senate to end their investigation before filing any complaint."

"We feel that others simply jumps on the bandwagon of reckless judicial actions against the President," she added.

Ombudsman has its hands full
The Ombudsman has only recently acted on several criminal complaints filed last year in connection with the scrapped NBN deal as it formed an investigative panel which launched public hearings starting mid-February.

The President ordered the Ombudsman to investigate the NBN deal after the controversy was again thrust to the limelight with the appearance of the Senate investigation’s latest resource person Rodolfo Noel “Jun” Lozada Jr.

Separate anti-graft cases were filed against the President, First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo, former Commission on Elections chairman Benjamin Abalos Sr., former National Economic and Development Authority Romulo Neri, former Speaker Jose De Venecia and son, Joey, Secretary Leandro Mendoza and other officials of the Department of Transportation and Communications and executives of ZTE.

Among those who filed criminal charges for violation of Republic Act 3019 or the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act were Nueva Vizcaya Rep. Carlos Padilla, former vice-president  Teofisto Guingona Jr., lawyer and Citizens’ Battle against Corruption (CIBAC) Rep. Emmanuel Joel Villanueva, Akbayan Rep. Ana Theresia Hontiveros-Baraquel, lawyers Harry Roque Jr., Roberto Rafael Pulido and Oliver Lozano,  Fr. Jose Dizon, Ma. Dominga Padilla, Roel Garcia and Bebu Bulchand.

Padilla filed his complaint before the Ombudsman late August last year.

Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez inhibited herself from the investigation following doubts on her impartiality because of her close relationship with the First Family. She was a classmate of Mr. Arroyo in law school and served as the President's chief legal counsel for a time.

Salonga has reportedly also asked for Gutierrez to inhibit from acting on the complaints he filed. With reports from ABS-CBN News and d

Bishops from Mindanao proved to be President Arroyo’s saving grace in Tuesday’s special meeting of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).

The CBCP, acting as a plenary council for the second time this year, again refused to join the rising chorus calling for Arroyo’s resignation in the face of fresh allegations of massive corruption by her administration.

Instead, the bishops wanted Arroyo to address concerns about allegations of corruption in government and wanted her "to be part of the efforts to seek reforms to find the proper pathway for our nation to come to political maturity."

A major disappointment for sectors seeking Arroyo’s downfall was the CBCP conclusion that Arroyo has not lost her "moral ascendancy" to govern despite the mounting allegations of corruption in her government.

The bishops merely pointed out to Arroyo that questions are being raised about her moral ascendancy, which they said she should address.

It was, by far, the longest plenary meeting that was conducted by the CBCP in recent memory. It took them more than 10 hours to come up with a seven-paragraph pastoral statement.

Three major issues

Fifty-one active and four retired bishops participated in the plenary.

abs-cbnNEWS.com/Newsbreak interviewed four bishops plus other sources who provided details on what transpired in the meeting.

The bishops were faced with three major issues: 1) whether a pastoral statement is in order; 2) how to approach allegations that the government is covering up allegations of corruption; and 3) whether they should pass judgment on her authority based on moral grounds.

During the first few hours of the meeting, the sources said the bishops argued whether they should issue another pastoral statement since they already issued one last January.

Malolos Bishop Jose Oliveros said some bishops felt there was no need to come up with another statement since the present situation was no different last month when they held their first annual plenary.

In the January plenary, the CBCP stressed that while corruption in government continues to be a nagging concern, the bishops said it was "by no means universal as far as the entirety of our people is concerned."

They said that the general concern of most people is livelihood and that they want "enough of the paralyzing divisions in body politic."

Kidnap key to new statement

Oliveros said it was only after two hours of discussion that the bishops decided to issue a new statement to reflect the new developments in the NBN-ZTE broadband scandal, particularly with the expose of Rodolfo Noel "Jun" Lozada.

Kalookan Bishop Deogracias Iniguez confirmed that his colleagues did not want to issue a new statement initially, but they eventually felt it was proper to put things in perspective.

The allegation that there was an attempt to kidnap Lozada by government authorities to prevent him from spilling the beans on the NBN-ZTE scandal also convinced the bishops that a statement is in order.

Cover-up

Iniguez said "one of the obstacles" that the bishops also argued was how to deal with allegations that government is trying its best to cover up anomalies in government by keeping government officials from testifying in proper forum, particularly in the Senate.

This explained why constitutionalist Fr. Joaquin Bernas was invited to speak before the bishops on Executive Order 464 (EO 464), which has been used as legal cover by government to keep officials from appearing at the Senate.

In inviting Bernas, Oliveros said the CBCP wanted to make sure that the recommendation they would come up with would not contravene any constitutional principle.

Bernas explained to them that the Supreme Court had already invalidated some objectionable portions in EO 464 and that executive privilege exists independently from it.

EO 464 bars government officials from testifying in congressional inquiries without approval from the President.

The SC has ruled that government must cite the grounds in invoking executive privilege, and that a mere-say so from the executive branch is not sufficient to bar officials from testifying.

Spirit of truth

In seeking the abolition of EO 464, Cagayan de Oro Bishop Antonio Ledesma said the bishops also wanted the Palace to waive executive privilege "in the spirit of truth and accountability."

Although it was not expressly stated, Ledesma said a waiver on executive privilege "is the essence of the recommendation."

Iniguez, one of Arroyo’s more vocal critics in the CBCP, echoed Ledesma’s position. Thus, the CBCP reached a consensus on asking President Arroyo to revoke EO 464 in order not to stifle congressional investigations on anomalies in government.

But Oliveros said the CBCP stopped short of categorically asking the President to give up executive privilege since this is a right vested to the Office of the President.

"We are not trying to protect the President but the Office she represents," he said.

Moral ascendancy split bishops

It was on the issue of moral ascendancy that lines were drawn between bishops critical and those supportive of the President.

Some bishops wanted the CBCP to declare that Arroyo had lost her moral ascendancy to govern while majority deemed that she has not.

Oliveros said the "consensus" among the bishops is that graft and corruption allegations against the President were not backed by evidence and based only on hearsay.

He noted that other bishops shared the sentiment that Lozada had not presented any evidence to support his claim, and that the President had a hand in the anomalous broadband deal.

Pro-resign outnumbered

A bishop, who refused to be identified, said many of the bishops from Mindanao, who are more or less sympathetic to the President’s plight, outnumbered those from Luzon who are either critical or neutral on the political situation.

The bishop noted that of those who were openly calling for Arroyo’s resignation, only one rose to intervene in the plenary.

Thus, when the statement was finalized, it lacked the venom that sectors who wanted Arroyo ousted had hoped for.

‘JDV of all people?’

Oliveros said the bishops considered the credentials of those who wanted the President to resign for supposedly losing the moral ground to govern.

He cited, for example, former House Speaker Jose de Venecia, who has openly sought the President’s resignation on the basis of moral bankruptcy. "Who are making the assessments? JDV, of all people?"

A source privy to the initial draft said some portions in the pastoral statement were watered down due to interventions of bishops sympathetic to the administration.

The source said the original wording on the portion on moral ascendancy said "it was at stake", but the final wording only stated there were questions being raised.

The bishops also refused to categorically say whether the pastoral statement last Tuesday was an indication that they wanted the President to finish her term.

"That is a political question and we are not competent to dwell on that," they said.
