From the article:   ". . . Bohol Island State University, the first and only of its kind in this part of the country." If the author meant Bohol, yes. But if Visayas, or Central Visayas, no.

super exaggeration sir koddi? hehehe
anyway, BISU is the latest among the addition of State Colleges and U's of Region VII. the others are CNU, CTU, NOSU and SSC. by the way, what made BISU special anyway?

kay kana si Edgar M Chatto murag mga Marcos naay dynasty...Naay crony...naay corruption...naay power nga sila ray mga pamilya og paryente magdumala sa Balilihan...Im so sad with your story and experienced bai BNC...So why r u still vote chattos...? Vote Salvio or any politician in balilihan ? Vote Montano or Herrera??? If that family chatto dli deserve sa imong boto then you have to vote according by ur conscience...not just taga inyuha balilihan walay kausaban or changes guihapon mahitabo...
bai arki, im voting him because he's far more ok compared to montano and herrera. aside from that i want to give him a chance to really show he's worthy to lead bohol not just because he's a balilinhon. yes its true that im still not convince with all his so called accomplishments because as what i've said before i didn't see any of it. those things are supposed to be done long before. that's why i will never bow nor submit myself to the chattos.

i should be voting for salvio since he's my 2nd degree cousin and i know that he's a picture of good governance. he's a true example of a leader who doesn't have to be rich but can still lead people. he run as vice-mayor because people wanted him to. it's the people of balilihan who encouraged him to run in this election. that's why the administration party, of course with eddie chatto's idea to field in efren chatto. the brother of eddie who's long been a baguio resident but returned because of this election. they don't want salvio to win because they're afraid that once salvio sits in as vice-mayor, it will be difficult for them to manipulate the whole balilihan. the same way they are doing it for a long time.

as far as i know, ang mga cities nga classified as highly urbanized city lang ang mag depende sa kita nila. pero kadtong ordinary city lang, pareha lang na sila as 1st class municipality. that goes the same sa mga governors, same set of salary given. ang magdiffer lang is the funds for their offices as it really depends on the income of the province or municipality. the more income the municipality can give, the more IRA share they will get thus more funds for them.

im not just sure if this is really true but so far this is what i consistently hear from people connected to LGU's.

Facts and Trivia / Top 10 Modern Night Club Fires
April 09, 2010, 01:17:03 AM
Nightclubs, a place for fun, dance, drink, and celebration, can quickly turn into deadly fire traps, killing hundreds of guests, entertainers, and staff. Here are ten of the deadliest nightclub fire disasters from 1940-2009. Though almost 60 years separates the oldest from the most recent, common threads run through all of these nightclub fires, overcrowding, locked exits, flammable decorative and construction materials, making them, in most cases, preventable catastrophes. The use of pyrotechnic displays or fireworks inside the buildings, usually as part of live stage acts or bands, has been the cause of many of these fire disasters, and the two most recent that occurred in 2009.

10. Wuwang Club

Just before midnight on September 21, 2008 the Wuwang Club located in Shenzhen, People’s Republic of China caught fire. 43 people were killed and another 88 were injured. As we will see over and over again, the fire was started by careless use of indoor pyrotechnics. The pyrotechnics ignited flammable material on the ceiling. The fire caused the lights to fail, plunging the club into darkness. The combination of fire and darkness caused the people inside the building to panic and rush for the exits. There were few well lit exits and windows had been boarded up, making them useless as an escape route. There were 308 people inside the club when the fire started. Most of the deaths were caused by crushing and suffocation in the rush for the exits. As is the case with so many nightclub fires, the building was not properly built and was unlicensed because of government corruption.

9. Santika

The Santika Pub was known as one of the hottest nightclubs in Thailand, a place for young Thais and others from around the world to dance and have fun. The club had a large dance area, stage, and mezzanines that overlooked the dance floor. On New Years, January 1, 2009, more than a thousand people were packed into the club to usher in the New Year with celebrations and to say goodbye to the Santika Pub which was scheduled to close and relocate. The club had live entertainment that night, a popular local band, ironically and tragically called “Burn”. Shortly after midnight, the band was playing on stage when, as part of the bands act, pyrotechnic displays were set off and sparks shot towards the ceiling. Revelers were videotaping the event and surviving video shows at 12:15 AM, sparks falling from the ceiling onto the dance floor. The video then shows members of Burn, and audience members, looking to the ceiling as the sparks continued to fall, and the ceiling fire grew larger.

At 12:20 AM the fire was reported to local police, but the fire department was not notified until 12:40 AM. Firefighters arrived at the club at 12:48 AM. In the 33 minutes between the time the pyrotechnics were set off, and the arrival of the fire department, fire raced through the building. Hundreds tried to get down to the main entrance from the balconies, only to find the entrance already jammed with people trying to flee the fire from the main floor. The electricity went out and burning pieces of ceiling fell onto those still trapped inside the building. Eventually, a portion of the roof collapsed. The fire killed 66 and injured another 229, making the Santika Pub fire the worst in Thailand history. Later it was determined the fire began when the pyrotechnics ignited sound proofing and insulating materials on the ceiling. In addition, the building was overcrowded, and the main entrance was not large enough to allow for a quick evacuation â€" most of those who died were found at the entrance, unable to escape.

8. Happy Land

Unlike most of the nightclub fires we will see on this list, the Happy Land fire was started by an act of arson. However, like so many other nightclubs, the Happy Land building was an unlicensed “social club”, was built with combustible and flammable materials, had previously been closed for fire safety violations, and the fire exits had been blocked to prevent people from entering without paying. The fire started at the “Happy Land” located in New York City, on March 25, 1990. The fire killed 87 people, 68 on the second floor, and the rest on the first floor. Eleven people were killed inside a first floor restroom. Most of the victims were ethnic Hondurans.

The fire was started by an unemployed Cuban refugee named Julio González, who was upset at his former girlfriend (who worked at the club). As a result of the argument, González was ejected by the bouncer. Angry, he came back to the club with gasoline which he spread on the only staircase into the club. He then used matches to ignite the gasoline. The fire quickly spread to the combustible material used in the entry way, and then spread from the entry way into the first floor bar through a door someone had left open. Unlike so many nightclub fires, the Happy land building did have a partial sprinkler system on the second floor, but not all of the sprinkler heads activated and regardless, the sprinkler system was inadequate to contain and control the fire, which started on the first floor.

7. Ozone Disco Club

The Ozone Disco Club was located in Quezon City, Philippines. The fire started shortly after midnight, March 18, 1996 local time. At the time the fire started there were approximately 390 people crammed into a building that was approved for occupancy of 35! At least 162 people died and 95 were injured. The Ozone Disco Club fire is the worst fire in Philippine history. Like most nightclub fires, the victims were predominately young, in this case, high school and college students attending a graduation. The cause of the fire appeared to be related to sparks, possibly a short circuit, from the disc jockey’s booth. Many thought the smoke, the sparks, and then the lights going out, were part of the show. When they realized it was a fire, there was a rush for the exits. Within minutes, flames had engulfed the inside of the club and its mezzanine had collapsed.

Many of the bodies were discovered along the corridor leading to the only exit, piled up waist-high. Quezon City officials were quoted as saying that the club’s emergency exit had been blocked by a new building next door and that there was no proper fire exit. It was also reported that the exit had been locked from the outside by the club’s guards, who had thought that a riot had taken place. Since the fire, there have been reports of ghostly hauntings of the remains of the building, which was never restored, and still stands today.

6. Club Cinq-Sept

The Club Cinq-Sept was a nightclub in south-eastern France just outside the small town of Saint-Laurent-du-Pont, Isère On the night of Sunday, November 1, 1970 a fire started at approximately 1:40 AM, apparently by a carelessly discarded match. About 180 patrons remained inside the nightclub at that time. Of those, 146 people would not live. A popular nightclub with the young, most of the victims were under the age of 30 and many of them teenagers. Like so many nightclubs, the Club Cinq-Sept was constructed and decorated with highly flammable and combustible materials such as polyurethane and papier-mâché . The fire began in the upper gallery and quickly spread. About 30 people were able to escape out the main entrance before the fire fell from the gallery above, blocking the way out. Two other exits were not marked and were locked. All six members of the band playing that night (Storm) perished in the fire.

5. Beverly Hills Supper Club

The Beverly Hills Supper Club fire is the third deadliest nightclub fire in U.S. history. It occurred on the night of May 28, 1977, during the Memorial Day weekend. 165 persons died and over 200 were injured as a result of the blaze. Located in Southgate, Kentucky, The Beverly Hills Super Club was a major attraction, drawing headline talent from Las Vegas, Hollywood, and New York. That night’s entertainment was singer and actor John Davidson. The building had been a popular night spot since 1937 and by the time of the fire in 1977, several additions had created a sprawling complex of rooms, corridors, and service areas connected by narrow corridors.

More than 3,000 guests and staff were inside the club on the evening of the fire. The main show was in the Cabaret Room and it was estimated that over 1,300 patrons had been squeezed into the room. Other guests were in several restaurants, bars, private party rooms, and other rooms. Sometime between 8:30 and 9:00 PM, a fire started in the Zebra Room which had hosted a wedding reception. The fire was discovered around 9:00 AM by waitresses. Attempts were made to control the fire with fire extinguishers, but it was too late. The cause of the fire was never completely determined though it is thought that the use of aluminum wiring may have contributed.

At 9:08 PM, busboy Walter Bailey interrupted the show in the Cabaret Room, taking the stage to ask patrons to leave and pointing out the exits to the left and right of the stage. Some of the spectators obeyed and began to leave the Cabaret Room through the exits. Bailey was hailed as one of the heroes of the night, receiving official recognition and a letter from then U.S. President Jimmy Carter. Bailey said later that for years he rejected the title of hero and wondered if he’d done enough.

The fire burst into the Cabaret Room at 9:10 PM, preceded by thick smoke that spread all over the room, quickly engulfing it. Those who had not evacuated quickly panicked; many of them would be found dead piled up near the main entrance. The flames spread so rapidly that a full evacuation of the sprawling, crowded building was not possible.

Firefighters concentrated on the Cabaret Room where it was known that many people were trapped, but at midnight the roof had collapsed, and authorities doubted any more survivors would be found. John Davidson escaped via a door that had recently been constructed near the talent dressing room. His road manager also escaped, but his musical director perished.

4. República Cromañón

The República Cromañón nightclub was located in Buenos Aires, Argentina. On December 30, 2004, a fire started inside the club because of the unsafe use of fireworks/pyrotechnics. The fireworks, as we have seen before, ignited highly flammable construction and decorating materials, in this case, a plastic net hung from the ceiling, and foam material . Elsewhere in the building, flammable teddy bear stuffing was used as a cheap alternative to fiberglass or rock wool. Approximately 3,000 people were inside the club when the fire started and 194 were killed, another 714 were injured. Where there are pyrotechnic displays, there are usually bands and this fire was no exception. This night, the club was being playing by the rock group Callejeros. The club owner and the band’s lead singer had told the patrons not to use flares inside the building, to no avail. As always seems to be the case with nightclub fires, four of the six doors, some of which were fire exits, were chained shut so that “people would not enter without paying”. Most of the victims died from inhaling poisonous gases, smoke and carbon monoxide. The band members escaped with their lives.

3. Rhythm Night Club

The two deadliest nightclub fires in US history are bookended around the start of the second world war. The second deadliest, the Rhythm Night Club fire, happened on April 23, 1940, barely 18 months before Pearl Harbor. The nightclub was located in Natchez, Mississippi and the fire killed 209 African-American party goers, while severely injuring many others.

The fire started sometime around 11:30 p.m. as members of the local Moneywasters Social Club were enjoying the song “Clarinet Lullaby” performed by Walter Barnes and His Royal Creolians orchestra from Chicago. The fire started at the main entrance door of the building and quickly engulfed the structure in flames. Foretelling future nightclub fire disasters, flammable materials contributed to the speed and intensity of the fire, in this case, decorative Spanish moss was draped over the rafters. When burning, the moss generated flammable methane gas which fueled the fire. With windows boarded up to prevent outsiders from viewing or listening to the music, more than 300 people struggled to escape the building. A few managed to escape but most died from smoke inhalation or were crushed in the stampede to escape. Bandleader Barnes and nine members of his band were among the victims. Only three band members survived, one vowing never to play again. The cause of the fire is unknown but thought to be accidental, possibly related to a carelessly discarded match or cigarette.

2. Cocoanut Grove

The worst nightclub fire in US history also happened near the start of the second world war when the Cocoanut Grove nightclub in Boston, Massachusetts caught fire on the night of November 28, 1942. Almost a year after Pearl Harbor, the nightclub was filled with US military service men and their guests and locals when the fire started. 492 people were killed that night and hundreds more were injured. It is also the second-worst single-building fire in American history; only the Iroquois Theater fire in Chicago in 1903 killed more (602). The tragedy shocked the nation and briefly replaced World War II in news headlines. The fire led to a reform of fire codes and safety standards across the country.

The Cocoanut Grove was filled with approximately 1,000 occupants that evening, more than twice its official capacity of 460. Like the Rhythm Nightclub fire only two years earlier, flammable and combustible materials and decorations were used inside the building. The restaurant, bars, and lounges inside were fitted out with flammable paper palm trees, cloth draperies covering the ceiling, flammable furniture, and other flimsy decorations, some of which obscured exit signs.

The fire started at about 10:15 p.m. in the basement of the building when Stanley Tomaszewski, a 16-year-old busboy, was instructed to turn on a light which had been unscrewed from the socket by a young couple wishing to kiss in the dark. As he attempted to tighten the light bulb back into its socket, the bulb fell out in his hand. In the dimly-lit lounge, Tomaszewski, unable to see the socket, lit a match for a moment to illuminate the area, found the socket, blew out the match, and replaced the bulb. Almost immediately, patrons saw something ignite in the canopy of artificial palm fronds draped above the tables.

The fire quickly spread along the fronds of the palm tree, igniting nearby decorations on the walls and ceiling and raced up the stairway to the main level. People’s hair exploded in flames, oxygen was sucked out of the rooms, and a fire ball exploded through the central dance floor. The flames spread to two other adjoining rooms. Within five minutes, the entire nightclub was ablaze.

Many patrons attempted to exit through the main entrance, the same way they had come in, however, the building’s main entrance was a single revolving door, which quickly became jammed and useless as a means of escape as the panicked crowd piled up at the door. So many bodies were piled inside and out that firefighters had to dismantle the revolving door to get inside.

Outside doors had been welded shut to prevent people from leaving without paying their bills. A plate glass window, which could have been smashed for escape, was instead boarded up and unusable as an emergency exit. Other unlocked doors opened inwards, rendering them useless against the crush of people trying to escape. Fire officials later testified that, had the doors swung outwards, at least 300 lives could have been spared.

1. The Station
NIST Re-creation of "The Station Night Club fire" without sprinklers

Perhaps the best known recent nightclub disaster was The Station nightclub fire. The fire at the Station was captured on video and images of the horror which unfolded were seen around the world. Perhaps the other reason this nightclub fire is so well known is because of the band that was playing The Station that night â€" the very popular, Great White. The fire began at 11:07 PM on Thursday, February 20, 2003. The Station was a rock n roll themed nightclub located in West Warwick, Rhode Island. One hundred people died in the fire, making The Station fire the fourth deadliest nightclub fire in American history, As we have seen time and time again, the fire was caused when pyrotechnic sparks, set off by the Great White tour manager, ignited flammable sound insulation foam in the walls and ceilings around the stage. This created a flash fire that engulfed the club in 5 1/2 minutes. Some 230 people were injured and another 132 escaped.

The video above shows how quickly a fire can spread through a building, trapping those inside. Like so many other fires started by pyrotechnic displays, the club patrons initially thought the fire was part of the show. Even though the ceiling is clearly on fire, people can be seen in the video continuing to celebrate the bands opening song. Twenty seconds into their first song, the band stopped playing and lead singer Jack Russell calmly remarked into the microphone, “Wow…this ain’t good.” In less than a minute, the entire stage was engulfed in flames. Most of the band members escaped through a nearby exit. The fire alarm then went off. People now realize it is a real fire and unfamiliar with the club layout and the location of other exits, naturally move to the most familiar exit, the entrance where they came in. The resulting stampede for this one exit (though other exits were available) blocked the narrow hallway leading to the front entrance. Many people were trapped inside, crushed, suffocated, or killed by the fire, smoke, and toxic gases. Among those killed were Great White’s lead guitarist, Ty Longley. The fire was caught on videotape by cameraman Brian Butler for WPRI-TV of Providence. Butler was at The Station that night doing a segment on nightclub safety in the wake of the E2 nightclub stampede in Chicago that had claimed 21 lives only four days earlier.

Bonus:
Lame Horse Club

The lessons of the Station and Santika Pub fires did not make their way to Perm Russia. On the night of December 5, 2009 a party was being held to celebrate the 8th anniversary of the Lame Horse Night Club. More than 280 people were invited. At approximately 1:00 AM, as the celebration was being videotaped, someone set of a pyrotechnic device. The club had used such firework displays before. This ignited the low ceiling which was made of a plastic covering and dry willow twigs. At first, no one reacted, possibly thinking the fire was part of the celebration. The master of ceremony continues with the entertainment. Soon after, video shows the fire spreading along the ceiling and quickly moving to the walls. The MC announces that people need to evacuate. People begin to leave. Some evacuated out a rear door, but this exit was not illuminated and unknown to many inside the club.

Most of the crowd went to the main entrance to try to escape the burning building. One leaf of the clubs double doors was sealed shut, slowing the evacuation as panicked people pushed toward the door. As people tried to push through the narrow exit, many did not make it and died only feet from safety as people piled up at the doorway. Others broke windows in an attempt to escape. This allowed oxygen to enter the burning building, speeding the fire. At least 153 people died in the blaze, most killed by carbon monoxide gas and smoke. Scores more were critically burned and are still receiving treatment. The Lame Horse Night Club fire is the deadliest in Russia since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. The cause of the fire was the pyrotechnic display igniting the highly combustible and flammable ceiling material.

Facts and Trivia / 10 More Unsolved Murders
April 09, 2010, 01:08:35 AM
Although trials were conducted in some of the following cases, ultimately they remain unsolved. This list is presented in no particular order, with the exception of item #1.

10. The Seewen Murders

The Seewen murders took place during Pentecost weekend in 1976 and remains one of Switzerland’s biggest unsolved murder cases. Five members of the Siegrist family ranging in ages from 45 to 80 years old were found dead in a weekend home in the protected forest of Seewen. Police suspect that only two of the family members were the targeted victims, while the other three just had the unfortunate luck to be in the home as well. The cause of death was obvious, 13 rounds from a Winchester type shotgun. What was a little more surprising was the accuracy of the rounds fired. 11 shots to the head, 2 shots to the upper chest.

To this day the majority of the Swiss public believes the likely murderer to be Carl Doser (pictured above), In 1996, an Italian made Winchester shotgun was found hidden in the walls of the Doser home. Forensic testing determined that this was indeed the murder weapon, but no motive, nor documentation of any meetings between Doser and the victims has ever been verified and he remains only a suspect.

A second theory revolves around Johnny Siegrist, a family member to the victims, who may have been assisted by Doser. Johnny was the likely purchaser of ammunition at Basler Steinenvorstadt, and the clerk recalls being asked if the Kal. 38 Spez ammunition would fit an “Italian made Winchester”. Upon searching Johnny’s residence, stryrofoam heads that had been shot through were discovered. Possible motive…Being belittled by the family. Johnny Siegrist was temporarily jailed, but his death in the early 80’s has left no one to be held accountable for the murders.

9. Bob Crane

Robert “Bob” Crane was an American TV actor best known for his portrayal of Col. Hogan from the comedy series “Hogan’s Heroes”. The series ran for 6 years (1965-1971) and Crane became beloved for his manly good looks and engagingly roguish demeanor in his attempts to sabotage the Nazi war effort from the confines of a POW camp. What the public didn’t know about Crane was his private battle with sex addiction, which destroyed two marriages. This addiction not only involved innumerable sexual encounters with young women, and heavy activity in the underground sex scene, but developed into an obsession with cameras, sex films and the newly developed world of video.

On June 29, 1978 Crane was discovered bludgeoned to death in his Scottsdale, Arizona apartment. Primary suspectâ€"John Carpenter. No, NOT the famous director, this Carpenter was a fellow sex addict who introduced Crane to the use of video in their sexual activities. Carpenter admits that he was with Crane his last night alive, but denies that he was the one who killed Crane with multiples blows to the head with a video tripod, even though brain matter was found in the rental car that Carpenter was driving. Unfortunately the case was handled poorly from the beginning by the Scottsdale and Phoenix police departments, and because of botched forensics as well as political maneuverings within the district attorney’s office that had little to do with the case itself, Carpenter remains free today.

8. Dian Fossey

Dian Fossey came to the world’s attention for her pioneering studies with gorillas in Africa, and her subsequent efforts to stop the poaching of the creatures she came to love. In 1967 Fossey founded the Karisoke Research Center, the base of operations for her studies, located deep within the Virunga Mountains, Rwanda. Her photograph was featured on the cover of National Geographic Magazine in January 1970, and photographs showing the gorilla “Peanuts” touching Fossey’s hand depicted the first recorded peaceful contact between a human being and a wild gorilla. Her book, Gorillas in the Mist, remains the best-selling book about gorillas of all time, and she sold the rights to Universal Studios for one million dollars so she could continue to fund her research and conservation efforts.

In 1985 Fossey was found dead in her bed at the Karisoke site. She was found with the machete she had confiscated from poachers and hung upon her wall, buried in her skull. Evidence found at the scene incriminated employees of the research center and the entire staff was arrested. They were subsequently released. No one has ever been prosecuted for her murder, though many theories abound, concentrating upon the illicit black market and the poaching of gorillas and other protected wildlife. Chances are no one will ever be prosecuted.

Fossey is buried next to her cherished gorilla friend Digit, at the Karisoke Research Center, in the special graveyard she constructed for the gorillas that she spent the better part of her life studying.

7. Julie Ward

Julie Ward, a 28 year old wildlife photographer from Ipswich was visiting in Kenya, and was found dead in the Masai Mara Game Reserve in 1988, after her friends reported that she hadn’t attended a farewell dinner the night before they were to depart Africa. Her dismembered and burned body was found deep within the reserve’s boundaries a week after she was reported missing. The original theory put forth by the Kenyan officials was that she had been eaten by lions and struck by lightning, but they later accepted that she was murdered after her father’s efforts uncovered further evidence. It was discovered that coroner’s reports had been altered to mask evidence of human participation in Julie’s murder.

There have been two trials regarding this case, one in 1992 and one in 1998, but all three suspects were acquitted. The case has reached international attention due to the efforts of Julie’s father, John Ward. He has traveled to Africa over 100 times and invested over 1 million pounds in his attempts to bring the killer(s) to justice, but since the involvement of high power officials like former President Daniel Moi and concerns for the safety of the Kenyan tourism industry there have been no killers convicted to this day.

6. Amber Hagerman

Unsolved murders are disturbing enough, but the thought that there is a child killer still roaming free has to be one of the worst realities that can be thrust upon the members of a community. Amber Hagerman was a beautiful little 10 year old girl from Arlington, Texas. On January 13,1996 a young playmate was able to provide to police a description of the man who quickly and forcibly pushed Amber into his black van and sped away. A search for the van was immediately organized, but it was four days before her little body was found. A man walking his dog found Amber’s body in a creek bed. Her throat was cut, but not until two days after her abduction.

In 2007 Terapon Adhahn, of Tacoma, Washington was arrested in connection to a series of child abduction rapes in the Washington state area, and he is the only suspect to date for the murder of Amber, although no charges for her murder have been able to be served. There is still a $75,000 reward offered for information that might lead to her killer.

Amber leaves behind a legacy. The Amber Alert is a public notification system adopted in the U.S. as a quick response effort to help expedite the safety and return of missing or kidnapped children. In April 2003, President George W. Bush signed the AMBER Alert legislation, making it a national program. Other legislation generated by Amber’s murder has since resulted in a national sex offender registry, and both of Amber’s parents were present when Bill Clinton signed the bill into law.

5. Tupac Shakur

Born Tupac Amuru Shakur, he was also known as 2Pac and sometimes, Makaveli. American born rapper and actor, Tupac has been featured in quite a few lists here at ListVerse, and now one more. The night that Tupac was fatally shot is quite well documented. He was never alone, being in the company of Marion “Suge” Knight, the CEO of Death Row Records the whole evening. On September 6, 1996 Tupac started his evening ringside at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada with such company as Louis Gossett Jr., Charlie Sheen and baseball great Reggie Jackson to watch Mike Tyson demolish Bruce Seldon in two minutes flat. After a brief scuffle with Orlando Anderson in the lobby of the MGM, Tupac then accompanied Suge to his home in a suburb of Las Vegas. About 10 PM the pair and their entourage left Suge’s home to go Club 662, where Tupac was scheduled to perform with the rap band Run DMC. They never arrived. Stopped at a red light, their car was boxed in on three sides by other vehicles and a fourth car rolled up on the left and started shooting. Out of the 13 bullets shot into Suge’s BMW, Tupac took three, one to his chest, one to his hip and one in the hand.

Two tires had been flattened in the shooting and on the way to the hospital a third tire blew out, and help had to be called. Paramedics were able to get Tupac to University Medical Center, where emergency surgery was performed. But to no avail, after three surgeries and the removal of one of his lungs Tupac succumbed to his injuries six days later.

Some say Tupac was killed due to his ties with gangs, others say he was killed because his mother was once a Black Panther. Maybe it was because of the feud between Death Row Records and New York based Bad Boy Records, run by Sean “P. Diddy” Combs. There was also another ongoing rivalry with Christopher Wallace, AKA the Notorious B.I.G. Regardless, the only witness who agreed to testify in the event of an arrest, Yafeu Fala, was killed two months later in New Jersey, leaving no other witnesses able to help with the case.

4. Catrine da Costa

Prostitution is hardly a safe way to earn a living and it proved deadly to Catrine da Costa in the spring of 1984. Working just north of Stockholm, Sweden, her dismembered body was found in two different sites in the city of Solna. Reported missing on June 10th, the first bag of body parts wasn’t discovered until July 18th. A second bag was discovered at Karlbergs beach in Solna on August the 7th, though her head, internal organs, one breast and genitalia have never been found. It’s the lack of these particular body parts that is the primary reason that no one has been brought to justice for the crime.

Two doctors, a pathologist who worked in between the two dump sites, and a general practitioner, whose very young daughter recalled memories of her father committing the crime were both arrested and sent to trial. But since there was no evidence of the method of murder, due to the missing body parts, there was no way to determine if the victim had “died of natural circumstances” and the Swedish legal system was forced to acquit the two men. Not to worry, the two doctors had their medical licenses rescinded and are no longer able to pursue a career in their trained fields. That hasn’t stopped them from suing for wrongful loss of income, and after almost a decade of legal maneuvering their suit has been denied as of February, 2010.

3. Mary Pinchot Meyer

A New England socialite that was raised in full stereotypical fashion, Mary Pinchot Meyer is another one of the many women who has died because of an association to the Kennedys. A graduate of Brearly School and Vassar College, Mary took an early interest in communism and was a member of the American Labor Party. Working as a journalist for Mademoiselle magazine kept Mary in the finest of company among the political comers and the ingenues that they spent their time with. Nobody was surprised when she married Cord Meyer, a U.S. Marine lieutenant who was on his way up the ladder, in 1945. By 1947 she was happy to leave her job as editor of Atlantic Monthly, to become a stay at home mother to her three children. Meanwhile, Cord Meyer was able to secure a position with the CIA, and the fact that he was a member of the communist party was not an issue. In the early 50’s Cord Meyer became one of the primary operatives in “Operation Mockingbird”, a covert mission to sway public opinion, using mass media. Mary’s communist leanings may also have been useful to the CIA, but they deemed her many love affairs left her too “unreliable”.

In 1956, the death of Mary’s middle son paved the way for a divorce, and opened the door for a more adventurous love life, and Mary had no problem turning a long time friendship with John F. Kennedy into something more illicit. Now comes the weird part. It seems that at this point in time there was an underground plot among a small circle of upper socialite women to influence the decision making processes of high political figures (men) by using sex and LSD. Mary was one of this little group, and her target was JFK himself. Considering their affair occurred during the Bay of Pigs fiasco, it is quite possible she DID have some influence on his policies.

Mary Pinchot Meyer was killed on 12 October, 1964, eleven months after John F. Kennedy’s assassination and two weeks after the Warren Commission report was made public. Mary’s body had two bullet wounds, one at the back of the head and another in her heart. FBI forensics stated that the wounds were made at close range, possibly point blank range. Upon her death those closest to her frantically searched for Mary’s diary and it was eventually found and burned. The burning was witnessed by two family members, who say that the affair with JFK was documented, but there was no further information that would shed light upon his assassination.

In 2001 Cord Meyer was asked if he knew who had killed Mary. He responded “The same sons of bitches that killed John F. Kennedy.”

2. Lake Bodom Murders

Lake Bodom is a freshwater lake near the city of Helsinki in Finland. It is also the site of a grisly mass murder that happened on June 6, 1960. Early in the morning a group of four teenagers, 2 18-year old young men and 2-15 year old girls were savagely attacked by knife and bludgeon, while sleeping in a tent at the lake. The attack left three dead at the scene and a sole survivor, Nils Gustafsson, who was severely injured with a concussion and a broken jaw. He recovered from his injuries and went on to live a healthy life. Despite the fact that there was a survivor, there were no leads that could provide an arrest for the deadly attack.

Twelve years later, to the day, a man left a suicide note confessing to the murders. He said he was a lemonade vendor at the lake and later that night killed the young teens. But police investigation into this written confession proved that the man had not committed the crime, as he was asleep with his wife at the time of the murders. Another lead came in 2003, when Professor Jorma Palo published his account of a man he had treated in his hospital on the night of the murders. The man’s name was Hans Assmaann, and he was treated for “suspicious injuries”. Palo alleges that the man was the murderer but the crime was covered up because of Assmaan’s ties to the KGB.

The most confusing twist to the story is the arrest of Nils Gustafsson, the survivor of the attack, in 2004. It was 44 years after the crime and Gustafsson was now 62 years old. According to the official statement, “Gustafsson erupted in jealous anger over his feelings for his new girlfriend. She was stabbed multiple times after the fatal blow, while the two other teenagers were killed less savagely”. Despite having come to trial, blood evidence could not be linked to Gustafsson, and he was acquitted in 2005. In the name of fairness, Finland awarded Gustafsson a large monetary settlement “for mental suffering caused by the long remand time.”

1. Servant Girl Annihilator

Since the first “Unsolved Murders” list ended with a vicious serial killer lets keep that format. Mollie Smith is presumed to be the first victim of the “Servant Girl Annihilator”, a serial killer who was active in the Austin, Texas area in 1884 to 1885. Pre-dating Jack the Ripper’s killing spree by almost 4 years, the viciousness of his attacks left the public hysterical, and some even tried to tie the two series of murders together as the work of one killer. At least 7 young women’s deaths are attributed to the Annihilator, who not only raped his victims, but bludgeoned or slashed them to death. Sometimes the murder weapon was an axe, and several victims were stabbed by some sort of spike in the ears or the face. The killers habit was to drag his victim from her bed while she slept, and because of this method on at least two occasions the victim’s male bed mate was attacked as well, resulting in the bludgeoning death of Orange Washington. Numerous arrests were made up to this point, but lack of evidence or airtight alibis lead to the release of all suspects.

By September of 1885 The Servant Girl Annihilator had attacked 8 people, leaving 5 dead. Things were quiet for a few short months, then a change of M.O. On Christmas Eve, 1885, not 1 but 2 well to do white women were dragged from their respective beds, raped and axed to death. The husbands of each of these women were arrested and placed on trial. Through the infantile beginnings of forensic science, each man was proven innocent of the crimes and acquitted. The murders stopped and no one was ever convicted for them.

Back to the Ripper murders, which took place in Whitechapel, London, England in 1888. One suspect, who rarely gets mentioned by Ripperologists, was a Malay cook calling himself Maurice, a man who had threatened to kill Whitechapel prostitutes but who had then disappeared. In 1885 he had been employed at the Pearl House, a small hotel, in Austin, Texas. The information was confirmed, and it was ascertained that the cook had left the premises in January 1886. The Servant Girl murders had ended just weeks earlier and most of the victims resided not far from the Pearl House.

This list looks at 10 of the special forces from around the world that have the honor of being the most elite and â€" consequently â€" badass. Feel free to mention your own favorites in the comments which will no doubt include a lot that are not listed here.

10. Spetsnaz

Whereas most of the training regimens of militaries around the world are designed to teach, Russia’s Special Purpose Regiments, equivalent to the U. S. Green Berets, endure punishment daily throughout their training. They may quit anytime they want. The Spetsnaz want only the best, pain-hardened, battle-loving killers.

They spar with the express goal of injuring each other, breaking ribs, fingers, vertebrae, healing only long enough to get back on their feet and complete the training. They are typically deployed for reconnaissance or house-to-house close quarters combat, but are also employed as extremely formidable bodyguards for high-ranking politicians.

They claim that they are not taught to ignore pain, since that is impossible. They are instead taught to enjoy it.

9. French Naval Commandos

They call themselves “berets verts,” or “green berets,” and consist of 6 units: Hubert, Trepel, de Montfort, de Penfentenyo, Jaubert, and Kieffer. Each unit is trained for special tasks, whether combat diving, close quarters sea combat, exfiltration, canine units, or long range fire support, including snipers and missile launchers. They were established much at the behest of Jacques-Yves Cousteau, who was a naval officer in WWII.

8. MARSOC

Currently, only men are allowed to try out for the U. S. Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command. It’s primary missions are typically special reconnaissance, direct action, and internal defense within foreign nations.

Their training regimen is comprised of 4 phases, increasing in strenuousness. Phase 1 is SERE training, survival, evasion, resistance, escape. They are trained to make fire by friction, fire by mirrors, even fire by ice, depending on the location to which they are deployed. You mold the ice with the heat of your hands into the shape of a lens, which works just like a magnifying glass.

Of course, they take matches and Zippos with them. After this, they begin physical fitness training, and hand-to-hand combat, practicing a hybrid of the most functional martial arts: Jeet Kune Do, Wing Chun, Karate, Jiu-Jitsu, even Pankration. Then, Sayoc Kali, which is Filipino knife fighting.

This is just phase 1. Phase 2 is marksmanship, amphibious demolitions, reconnaissance. Phase 3 is a contrinuation of 2, but with the addition of field radioes and satellite data-uplink systems. Phase 4 is “irregular warfare” instruction, which is a euphemism for “anything goes.” This phase consists primarily of the Derna Bridge operation, which forces the recruits to use all skills acquired during the course.

7. MI-6

The closest thing to James Bond can be found in the personnel of the UK’s Secret Intelligence Service, or Security Service, section 6. It works in close partnership with section 5 (MI-5), the latter which is more of a pure spy agency, dedicated to counter-intelligence and counter-espionage.

MI-6, however, is the unit which deploys its agents all over the world to detect international intelligence threats and “neutralize” them before they become truly dangerous. Their headquarters is at Vauxhall Cross, London, and they will be quick to tell you there that there is no James Bond among them, and that their assignments and missions are quite boring.

They do, however, have an agent very similar to “Q,” who is in charge of all equipment and weaponry deployed for each operation. They also have indoor firing ranges, dojos, and a gym.

6. U. S. Army Rangers

After basic Army training, voluntary enlistment into the 75th Ranger Regiment will train the recruit for the HALO parachute jump, SERE, languages, elite combatives expert, mountain warfare, combat diving, in addition to all the weapons qualification training.

After nine weeks of this, they enroll in Advanced Individual Training, to become masters of their chosen fields, then immediately enroll in the Army Airborne School, then in Ranger Indoctrination or Orientation Programs.

By the time they’ve graduated, they’re so well trained that members have reported waking up screaming from nightmares about Ranger school to be relieved that they are only in Vietnam.

But then, they lose a few points for an incident a Ranger told me about: he was the captain of a tank regiment on maneuvers in the Amazon jungle. Just an exercise, but because of the sweltering heat, they had to open their tank hatches. This captain, who shall remain nameless, heard a thump behind him, and turned to see a Goliath Bird-eating Spider crawling toward him, raising its front legs and hissing.

He admits to screaming like a girl, knifing the tarantula, jumping out of the tank and running off into the jungle for a mile and a half. His buddies still rib him about it.

5. U. S. Army Green Berets

That’s their nickname. Technically they are the U. S. Army Special Forces, as opposed to the special forces of other countries, many of which also wear green berets.

Typically, the Green Berets are trained to administer “unconventional warfare,” which entails infiltrating a hostile area in anticipation of a large-scale military engagement, and training the local resistance populations to fight back against the enemy. This was done in South Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan, among others.

In the event that there is no local resistance to the enemy, the Green Berets infiltrate and soften up the enemy by “neutralizing” as many of its officers as possible. This usually involved sniping and throat cutting.

Training is very extensive and begins with the Army’s assessment of the recruit’s possession of 12 attributes: intelligence, physical fitness, motivation, trustworthiness, accountability, maturity, stability, judgment, decisiveness, teamwork, influence, and communications. 40% of applicants satisfy the Army that they have these attributes.

Final training consists of various endurance courses, carrying heavy backpacks over 40 miles of rugged terrain, with nothing but a live chicken and a knife, day and night. If the recruit can make a fire, he can eat the chicken cooked. He is not given matches or a lighter. He is allowed only a compass and his own hand-drawn map, completed from earlier reconnaissance courses.

4. The Delta Force

The only official United States counter-terrorism unit, dedicated to hostage rescues, counter-insurgency, and general counter-terrorism. They’re full name is 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta, managed by the Army. Selection is done according to a physical fitness test: situps, pushups, followed by a 3-mile run, in an undisclosed time limit.

Then an all-night, 18-mile hike over mountainous terrain with a 35 lb backpack and a compass, no map. This finally culminated with a 40-mile hike with a 45 lb backpack, in a shorter time limit.

Then psychologists conduct a grueling battery of mental exams on the recruit to try to break him into confusion. If he passes this, he actually gets to begin Delta Force training, for 6 months. Firearms, heavy weaponry, elite hand-to-hand training.

3. Shayetet 13

The name means “Flotilla 13,” and their official motto is the same as the Israeli military: “Never Again,” in reference to the Holocaust. Their unofficial motto, as they like to joke, is “When the going gets tough, the Jews get pissed.”

They are 1 of the 3 most elite Israeli special forces units, but Shayetet 13 is the unit most similar to the Delta Force. They specialize in hostage rescue and counter-terrorism, and because they live so close to a host of nations that seem bent on eradicating them, they are at all times ready in an instant to travel abroad and kill. They are very secretive, but of their missions publicized, the most notable include Operation Spring of Youth, in which they hunted down members of Black September in Beirut Lebanon and killed them, in revenge for the 1972 Munich massacre.

Apart from their firearms and heavy weapons training, they train extensively in Krav Maga, the national martial art of Israel, to which they endearingly refer as “Jew-jitsu.” It’s philosophy is based on the principle that in a real street fight no quarter will be asked or given. Fight to kill. Groin strikes are quite prevalent.

2. Navy SEALs

You might think there are a lot of them, given the number of action movies dedicated to the plot device of an invincible warrior, but there are only about 2,000 of them. They are the Unites States’s most elite special warfare combatants. They are trained in all the fields in which the other U. S. special forces are trained, but to an even higher degree of competency.

SEAL training lasts over a year, and requires an age of between 17 and 28 years, male, incorrect vision no worse than 20/200 in either eye, and correctable to 20/20, and the physical screening test, which is beyond belief.

500 yd (460 m) swim using breast or combat sidestroke in under 12:30 with a competitive time of under 10:30.

At least 42 push-ups in 2 minutes with a competitive count of 79 or more.

At least 50 sit-ups in 2 minutes with a competitive count of 79 or more.

At least 6 pull-ups from a dead hang (no time limit) with a competitive count of 11 or more.

Run 1.5 mi (2.4 km) in boots and trousers in under 11:30 with a competitive time of 10:20 or less.

Then training begins. Physical conditioning, diving, land warfare, for 24 weeks, then 26 more weeks of SEAL qualification training. Then specialization in whatever fields a SEAL team needs expertise in: anything from sniper to language specialist, rope climbing, diving, jumpmaster, surreptitious entry, dynamic entry (door breacher), etc.

1. British SAS

The Special Air Service is trained to perform equally well in all the fields listed for the SEALs, but is also trained by MI-5 and MI-6 for in-depth counter-espionage, more so than the SEALs. Physical competency must be of equal stature to the SEALs, to the degree that both special forces work closely together when necessary (Iraq and Afghanistan) and have good camaraderie.

They wear a tan beret, just as the U. S. Army Rangers, and both the SAS and SEALs are trained in knife fighting by experts in Apache Indian knife techniques, as well as Sayoc Kali, Krav Maga, Jeet Kune Do, and for the last 3 years or so, the Keysi Fighting Method, made famous by the Chris Nolan “Batman” films.

They have the distinction of being the model on which almost all national commando units are based today, including every other entry on this list.

Money is tight anymore. Between a recession that we are all tired of hearing about, low amounts of jobs and high unemployment, we should all be saving our money. But we are going to be equally, if not more, bored when we are poor as we are when we have enough money to spare for luxuries and hobbies. You may not have enough money for the Nintendo Wii, you may be a few dollars short to go to the theatre and see a movie, maybe you are using most of your paycheck to fill up your car, so you can go to work, so you can get a paycheck that is just enough to fill up your car for the commute to work. So what is there to do that is fun, but very cheap? Well, at least ten things.

10. NERF Wars

Most of us have at one time seen the flamboyantly colored guns that fire the harmless foam darts with suction cups for tips. But the best part is that they are cheap. A high quality NERF gun will not put you up any more than $40 USD (and most will be between $10 and $20). NERF is definitely the most expensive thing on this list, don’t be disheartened. If you manage to cough up a meager $35, you can be the proud owner of a brand new Vulcan NERF Blaster (for those who are wondering, that is short for belt-fed, tripod-mounted, full-automatic machine gun).

After you obtain your new blaster, try Capture the Flag, Elimination, King of the Hill, and many more game variants. College students need to see if their campus hosts a Humans Vs. Zombies game, where hundreds of students arm themselves with NERF blasters and battle hundreds of other students, the “zombies”, who try to tag human players and infect them.

9. Capture the Flag

A well-known game, it can be incorporated into wargames (paintball, airsoft, NERF as mentioned above), but for this entry, I’ll talk about the regular tag version. While many people play infinite variations of the game, the most standard version I am am aware of is this.

Two teams occupy one half of the playing area each. They guard a flag (which could be anything from an actual flag to a paper towel to some kind of toy or baton) and the other attempts to capture it and return it to their own side. If you are in the other teams territory, you can be tagged and sent to the team’s jail, where you stay until they release you or a teammate tags you free. Some people play one-sided CTF (one team defends while the other attacks, and roles switch at the end of a timed round), and some play one flag (both teams vie for a single flag set in the middle of the playing area, and try to return it to they’re side). Many websites are dedicated to the game, and many college campuses organize huge games of CTF for their students.

8. Road Trip Bitch

This is a great game for you can your friends to play on long road trips. Bring a silly hat, that is all you need. Before you depart for your trip, the driver designates things that are catalysts for the game. When the catalyst is seen by anybody in the car, they immediately punch the roof and yell the catalyst. Regardless of whether they themselves have seen it, the other occupants of the car must punch and yell too. Last person the react is the Trip Bitch, or Car Bitch.

A catalyst can be anything. For example, when I played, catalysts were Padiddles (any car with one headlight out), and large white vans. When we saw a Padiddle, we punched and yelled “Padiddle!” When we saw a white van, we punched and yelled “Pedophile!” They can be cars, animals, certain road signs, anything. The Bitch must wear the hat at all times (even if you stop to eat at a restaurant, use the bathroom, etc.) and if they lose twice in a row, they must unzip their fly and leave it down. They are to be ridiculed and insulted the whole time they are Bitched. You are no longer the Bitch when you react faster than someone when a catalyst is spotted.

7. Stealth

For this, you need a few flashlights, a large playing area with plenty of hiding spots, a dark night, and at least one cheap light, like a book light or light-up keychain. There are two teams in this game: Hunters, and Seekers. Hunters take the Light, which is the keychain, and hide it. It must be visible, but not so blatant that it can be seen from a long distance. Seekers start on the opposite side of the playing area, and use stealth to sneak around past the Hunters to try and find and capture the Light. Hunters use their flashlights to shine on the Seekers. If a Seeker is spotted with a flashlight and called out, they are tagged. The first time, they get a warning and must retreat out of sight of the hunters back the way they came, then continue. The second time, they are eliminated. When we play, we play in the local large cemetery or inside a large church. You can play with as little as 3 people, but more is better. Seekers usually outnumber Hunters.

6. Ghost Hunting

I’m sure many of you will not even consider this an option, but trust me, it is fun. Going to creepy and out-of-the-way places carries it’s own thrill. Bring cameras and voice recorders, and see what you can find. However, if you go expecting to find anything, you will almost always be disappointed. Whether it is because of lack of spirits or lack of luck, I’ll leave to the individual to decide. But regardless of any evidence or occurrences, or lack of, all of my friends enjoy the activity, both believers and skeptics. Most of the times, the unknown things you will find aren’t eerie voices or pictures, but obscure histories and dark pasts of the locations, and how their legends developed.

5. Scavenger Hunt

For this, you need two teams, a list of items to find, and some cameras (cell phone cameras are preferred). Both teams gather and receive their lists of what to find, then drive or walk around to get them. Document your finds with the cell phone cameras, and if you can, send them to the other team to taunt them! Items on the list can be actual objects, or just a task. When we went, we had to: Get kicked out of a store, find a Bush-Cheney bumper sticker (in 2007, mind you), kiss a farm animal (my friend and the cow he kissed are now expecting), and other things like that. Lists can include anything!

4. Manhunter

Find the large area you used to play Stealth, and head back there to play this, also a night-time game. You have to Victims, and the Killer. Victims must wear sunglasses and ear plugs. This forces them to use flashlights to see, and speak loud to communicate. Our Killer, who preferably dresses in dark clothing, must stalk the Victims and tag them. If you want to make things really interesting, give the Victims NERF guns and the Killer and Sharpie marker (to simulate a knife). Last one standing is the new Killer next round. Happy hunting!

3. Urban Exploration

Urban Exploration is a pass time that involves going to any place, usually considered undesirable or uninteresting, and discovering things that nobody else knows about. These locations are usually reported to be haunted, and so UE has close ties to ghost hunting, but they are not exclusive. Most Urban Explorers are interested in unusual or dark history, or things that are just strange and weird. I recently discovered a little-known nature preserve, very close to my home, that has an abandoned cemetery and Depression-era homestead, tucked away in the woods. Further poking and research led me the history of the former residents, and the area in general.

2. Cemetery Safari

Some may consider this disrespectful, but rest assured, none is intended. Go to a cemetery, preferably one in an area you aren’t too familiar with. Find a tombstone that stands out to you, and write down the person’s name. When you get home, research that person, and check out their history. Generally, the more ornate tombstones lead to more eccentric people! I have found some truly amazing stories on my Safaris, which have in turn led me to other relatives in other cemeteries, which augmented my Urban Exploring.

1. Geocaching

Geocaching is a widespread activity, taking the world by storm. People have hidden things called geocaches around the world. All you need is a GPS device (most phones will be capable) or you can simply load a map onto your computer and bring it along. Geocahces can be anything, from key boxes to Tupperware containers, from baby-food jars to coffee cans. Some even get 5 gallon containers! In the container, you leave several trinkets, usually toys and other things with a low value, and hide it. You then go online, log the GPS coordinates, and leave clues to it’s location for other geocachers. When you find one, sign the logbook to show you were there, and take an item, but also put one back. Caches and be as easy to find as lifting a rock, and some get as difficult as to need rock climbing gear! Some are even hidden underwater, accessible only with SCUBA gear! Some of these geocaches were hidden literally almost in my backyard. Go to www.geocaching.com and register for a free account (they do NOT send spam or newsletters) and you can see a map with geocaches marked in your local area! It is a world-wide game, with competitions and events. Many people own trackig dots, which are coins that have a code that you enter online to log it and see where it has been. The one we found started it’s journey in South Carolina, but had hits all over North America, aven a few in Australia, New Zealand, Asia, and Europe!

Also, geocachers practice what is called “Cache In Trash Out”, which involves picking up litter and keeping the areas that caches are located in clean.

With nearly half his league’s teams reeling from massive operating losses, NBA commissioner David Stern today declared that he would begin charging both players and fans for free throws.

“It’s an unfortunate result of our economic climate,” said Stern.  “Right now, many of our teams are simply not generating the kind of revenue needed to preserve competitive balance within the league.”

Stern went on to blame the massive revenue losses on NBA players, whom he said earn a disproportionate amount of money in relation to league grosses, as well as NBA fans, who have declined to watch subpar teams such as the Grizzlies, Nets, Grizzlies, Wizards, and Grizzlies.

“This league was built on fans,” Stern said.  “Without their support, we suffer.  So really, it’s their fault.”

According to the new rules, any player who is fouled will face a surcharge before stepping to the free throw line (which will now be renamed the throw line).  Fees will be based on a percentage of the player’s salary.  Players making more will be charged more for the right to shoot two throws.  If the player cannot afford the surcharge, the throws will be counted as missed and the fouling team will regain possession.  Players such as Kobe Bryant, who is fouled nearly 20 times a game, are expected to lose tens of thousands of dollars per game.

Further, fans in attendance will be charged ten cents apiece for each throw.  Fans watching at home will see the surcharge appear added to their cable bill.

Fans around the nation were outraged by the announcement.

“This is a disgrace,” said Knicks fan Mike Chester.  “If Dick Bavetta is doing a game, I’ll be flat broke by the halftime.

But Stern defended the new practice.

“These throws have been free for far too long,” said Stern.  “We have to diversify our revenue streams, and this is one of the least invasive ways of doing it.”

Stern also announced that Dick Bavetta will now officiate every NBA game in perpetuity.

2. Computer Mouse (£12,400/$24,180)

Most consumers just use the mouse that comes with their desktop and only purchase a mouse when they spill the inevitable hot cup of coffee and ruin the wheel action on their mouse. Others must think of their mouse as a fashion accessory though, because why else would Swiss manufacturer Pat Says Now produce the world’s most expensive computer mouse. The costly peripheral is cast from 18 carat white gold and set with 59 brilliant cut diamonds. The mouse utilizes a modern 3-button wheel optical mouse design, options for USB or PS/2 connections for PC or Mac, an 800 dpi Resolution, and a 3 year warranty. These are ten places you don’t want to visit! Having said that, maybe the curious would get a thrill from visiting some of these strange and dangerous places, but for most of us, reading about it is quite enough.

10. Great Pacific Garbage PatchPacific Ocean

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, also described as the Pacific Trash Vortex, is a gyre of marine litter in the central North Pacific Ocean located roughly between 135° to 155°W and 35° to 42°N. Most current estimates state that it is larger than the U.S. state of Texas, with some estimates claiming that it is larger than the continental United States, however the exact size is not known for sure. The Patch is characterized by exceptionally high concentrations of pelagic plastics, chemical sludge, and other debris that have been trapped by the currents of the North Pacific Gyre. The patch is not easily visible because it consists of very small pieces, almost invisible to the naked eye, most of its contents are suspended beneath the surface of the ocean. This is not a place the average Joe would want to visit.

9. Izu Islands

The Izu Islands are a group of volcanic islands stretching south and east from the Izu Peninsula of Honshū, Japan. Administratively, they form two towns and six villages; all part of Tokyo. The largest is Izu Ōshima, usually called simply Ōshima. Because of their volcanic nature, the islands are constantly filled with the stench of sulfur (extremely similar to the smell of thousands of farts). Residents were evacuated from the islands in 1953 and 2000 due to volcanic activity and dangerously high levels of gas. The people returned in 2005 but are now required to carry gas masks with them at all times in case gas levels rise unexpectedly.

8. The Door to Hell

Address: Derweze, Turkmenistan

This has featured on listverse before, but it would be remiss of us to exclude it from this list. While drilling in Derweze in Turkmenistan in 1971, geologists accidentally found an underground cavern filled with natural gas. The ground beneath the drilling rig collapsed, leaving a large hole with a diameter of about 50-100 meters. To avoid poisonous gas discharge, scientists decided to set fire to the hole. Geologists had hoped the fire would go out in a few days but it has been burning ever since. Locals have named the cavern The Door to Hell. As you can see from the picture above, it is one hell of an amazing place, but certainly one you wouldn’t want to visit.

7. Alnwick Poison Gardens

Address: Denwick Lane, Alnwick, NE66 1YU, England

Inspired by the Botanical Gardens in Padua, Italy (the first botanical garden which was created to grow medicinal and poisonous plants in the 1500s), the Alnwick Poison Garden is a garden devoted entirely to plants that can kill. It features many plants grown unwittingly in back gardens, and those that grow in the British countryside, as well as many more unusual varieties. Flame-shaped beds contain belladonna, tobacco and mandrake. The Alnwick Garden has a Home Office license to grow some very special plants; namely, cannabis and coca which are found behind bars in giant cages â€" for obvious reasons.

6. Asbestos MineCanada

Address: Thetford-Mines, Quebec, Canada

Asbestos is a set of six naturally occurring silicate minerals highly prized for their resistance to fire and sound absorption abilities. On the downside, exposure to this stuff causes cancer and a variety of other diseases. It is so dangerous that the European Union has banned all mining and use of asbestos in Europe. But, for those curious enough to want to get close to the stuff, all is not lost. In Canada at the Thetford Mines, you can visit an enormous open pit asbestos mine which is still fully operational. The workers in the mines aren’t required to wear any sort of respiratory protection, and in some sections of the nearby town, residential areas are butted right next up against piles of asbestos waste. The mine offers bus tours of the deadly environment during the summer months. Tickets are free (would you expect it to be any other way?). If you decide to visit, don’t forget your full body bio-hazard suit.

5. Ramree Island

Ramree Island in Burma is a huge swamp home to 1000 species of enormous salt water crocodiles, the deadliest in the world. It is also home to malaria carrying mosquitos, and venomous scorpions. During the Second World War, the island was the site of a six week battle in the Burma campaign. Here is a description of one of those horrifying nights: “That night [of the 19 February 1945] was the most horrible that any member of the M.L. [motor launch] crews ever experienced. The scattered rifle shots in the pitch black swamp punctured by the screams of wounded men crushed in the jaws of huge reptiles, and the blurred worrying sound of spinning crocodiles made a cacophony of hell that has rarely been duplicated on earth. At dawn the vultures arrived to clean up what the crocodiles had left…Of about 1,000 Japanese soldiers that entered the swamps of Ramree, only about 20 were found alive.”

4. Yungas Road

The North Yungas Road (Road of Death or Death Road) is a 61 kilometres (38 mi) or 69 kilometres (43 mi) road leading from La Paz to Coroico, 56 kilometres (35 mi) northeast of La Paz in the Yungas region of Bolivia. It is legendary for its extreme danger with estimates stating that 200 to 300 travelers are killed yearly along it. The road includes crosses marking many of the spots where vehicles have fallen. The road was built in the 1930s during the Chaco War by Paraguayan prisoners. It is one of the few routes that connects the Amazon rainforest region of northern Bolivia, or Yungas, to its capital city. Because of the extreme dropoffs of at least 600 metres (2,000 ft), single-lane width â€" most of the road no wider than 3.2 metres (10 ft) and lack of guard rails, the road is extremely dangerous. Further still, rain, fog and dust can make visibility precarious. In many places the road surface is muddy, and can loosen rocks from the road.

3. Mud Volcanoes of Azerbaijan

In the Spring of 2001, volcanic activity under the Caspian Sea off the Azeri coast created a whole new island. In October 2001 there was an impressive volcanic eruption in Azerbaijan at Lokbatan, but there were no casualties or evacuation warnings. But Azerbaijan does not have a single active volcano, at least not in the usual sense of the word. What Azerbaijan does have is mud volcanoes â€" hundreds of them. Mud volcanoes are the little-known relatives of the more common magmatic variety. They do erupt occasionally with spectacular results, but are generally not considered to be dangerous â€" unless you happen to be there at the wrong time: every twenty years or so, a mud volcano explodes with great force, shooting flames hundreds of meters into the sky, and depositing tonnes of mud on the surrounding area. In one eruption, the flames could easily be seen from 15 kilometers away on the day of the explosion, and were still burning, although at a lower level, three days later.

2. The Zone of Alienation

The Zone of Alienation is the 30 km/19 mi exclusion zone around the site of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor disaster and is administrated by a special administration under the Ukrainian Ministry of Extraordinary Situations (Emergencies). Thousands of residents refused to be evacuated from the zone or illegally returned there later. Over the decades this primarily elderly population has dwindled, falling below 400 in 2009. Approximately half of these resettlers live in the town of Chernobyl; others are spread in villages across the zone. After recurrent attempts at expulsion, the authorities became reconciled to their presence and even allowed limited supporting services for them. Because of looting, there is a strong police presence â€" so be warned, if you visit, you may either be shot or get radiation poisoning â€" and we all know how awful that can be.

1. Ilha de Queimada Grande

Off the shore of Brazil, almost due south of the heart of São Paulo, is a Ilha de Queimada Grande (Snake Island). The island is untouched by human developers, and for very good reason. Researchers estimate that on the island live between one and five snakes per square meter. That figure might not be so terrible if the snakes were, say, 2 inches long and nonvenomous. The snakes on Queimada Grande, however, are a unique species of pit viper, the golden lancehead. The lancehead genus of snakes is responsible for 90% of Brazilian snakebite-related fatalities. The golden lanceheads that occupy Snake Island grow to well over half a meter long, and they possess a powerful fast-acting poison that melts the flesh around their bites. This place is so dangerous that a permit is required to visit.

Weird and Extreme / Top 10 Popes Who Died Violently
April 08, 2010, 12:27:38 AM
Pope (from Papa meaning Father) is the term used for the men who have ruled the Catholic Church since its birth at Pentecost. Throughout the history of the papacy there have been a small number of wicked popes, but in contrast there have been many great ones (Pope Saint Gregory the Great, for example, who gave us the calendar we all use today). There has also been a great deal of bloodshed in the history of the Papacy â€" this list looks at ten cases of that. This list is in chronological order.

10. Pope St Peter13 October 64 A.D.

As one of the original apostles of Jesus, and one of the greatest purveyors of Christianity at the time, the apostle Simon Peter became the ire of Emperor Nero of Rome who despised Christians (going so far as to blame them for the Great Fire of Rome earlier in the year 64AD). An order was sent out by Nero for Peter’s arrest, but he escaped. During his escape, Peter witnessed a vision of Jesus which inspired him to return to Rome and accept his martyrdom. It is said that he asked to be crucified as Jesus was, but to be turned on his head so as not to imitate Jesus’ crucifixion. In this position, he wouldn’t easily be able to suffocate to death as those in an upright position were prone to do, prolonging his death.

9. Pope St Clement I (99 A.D.)

According to legend, after being banished from Rome and sent to work in a stone quarry, Clement found that his fellow prisoners were suffering from dehydration. After kneeling to pray, he saw a lamb on a hill. He took a pickaxe and struck the ground where the lamb stood, and a stream of water came gushing out. As it goes, upon seeing this many locals and fellow prisoners were converted to Christianity on the spot. As punishment by the guards, an anchor was tied around Clement’s neck and he was thrown into the Black Sea.

8. Pope St Stephen I (2 August 257)

Stephen was only Pope for a scant three years, but was burdened by controversy both within the church, and from outside forces. Within the church, the debate roared on over the subject of rebaptism of lapsed Catholics and the like. Outside the church, though, Emperor Valerianâ€" who had once been an ally of Christians, but later turned away from themâ€" issued two edicts of persecution against the church. Stephen was sitting in his throne, celebrating Mass, when the emperor’s men stormed the room and beheaded Stephen where he sat. The blood-stained throne was alleged to have been preserved by the church until the 18th century.

7. Pope St Sixtus II (6 August 258)

Not too long after Pope Stephen I was killed, Sixtus II was elected as the new Pope. During this time, Emperor Valerian had made it law that all Christians were required to participate in ceremonies honoring the Roman gods, largely to avoid conflict with the government. As Pope, though, Sixtus was able to avoid this. Unfortunately, not long after the first decree, Valerian sent out another which condemned Christians priests, bishops, and deacons to death. While giving a sermon, Sixtus II was captured by the emperor’s men and put to death by beheadingâ€" the first victim of the infamous 258 Persecutions.

6. Pope John VII (18 October 707)

Born the grandson of a Senator, and the son of a state official, made John VII the first Pope to be born from a distinguished family line. He was also Pope during the time of the “Byzantine Papacy”, wherein all Popes had to be approved by the Byzantine emperor to ensure that all decisions made would suit the state, though as with other Popes during that time things didn’t always go so smoothly. But it wasn’t the state that would see to his end, but rather the enraged husband of a woman John VII was sleeping with who caught them in the act, and beat the Pope to death.

5. Pope John VIII (16 December 882)

Some consider him one of the greatest Popes of his times, and others argue otherwise; but neither would disagree that his time was marred by political intrigue. It was only a matter of time before he himself would become the victim of this. There is some speculation as to whether it was a coordinated assassination, or simply done out of jealousy of the churches treasures; but one evening a relative of John VIII visited the Pope, and poisoned his drink. Finding that the poison did not work quickly enough, the relative bashed in John’s head in with a hammer.

4 Pope Stephen VII (August 897)

This one is actually a two-fer of sorts. The thing Pope Stephen VII is most famous for is not any particular decree, or acts of benevolence, but rather for putting a corpse on trial. Specifically, his predecessor, Pope Formosus, was put to trial in what would become known as the Cadaver Synod. Upon finding dead Pope Formosus guilty of all charges, Stephen VII had him stripped of his papal vestments, three fingers removed from his right hand, his body thrown into the Tiber river, and all the former Pope’s laws and ordinations annulled. Sadly for Stephen VII, the trial caused a frenzy and he was imprisoned, and later put to death by strangling.

3 Pope John XII (14 May 964)

When people think of the Pope, the more devout will think of them as a benevolent and compassionate leader, or failing that, at least as a pretty nice guy most of the time. Not so with John XII. Shortly after being elected Pope at the age of eighteen, John XII decided the whole celibacy thing wasn’t for him and went about humping whatever he could. Gambling, theft, assassinations, and incest are only a few things he was reported to have partaken in regularly. It’s even alleged that he would toast Satan and Roman gods and demons during sermons and other celebrations. He was briefly deposed by Pope Leo VII after John XII handed the papal lands over to German king Otto I, but was later reinstated. So after all that, it only seems a somewhat ironically fitting end that John XII would be beaten to death by a jealous husband coming home to find the Pope having sex with his wife.

2. Pope Benedict VI (June 974)

It seems Benedict VI never did a whole lot himself, and yet he was destined to suffer for the transgressions of his predecessor, Pope John XIII, who during his time as Pope made several enemies amongst the nobility in Europe. John at one point was captured and exiled, yet managed to return and had several of his enemies hung for their parts in his exile. John went on to die a natural death, but unfortunately Benedict was not as fortunate. Only a year and a half after being elected Pope, a priest named Crescentius Iâ€" brother of the late Pope John XIIIâ€" was ordered to capture, and later strangle Benedict VI to death.

1. Pope John XXI (18 August 1277)

Along with being Pope for only a very short eight months, John XXI was also a practicing physician and a prolific writer, writing on subjects such as logic, philosophy and medicine. It seems a fitting tribute then that John XXI would be immortalized in Dante’s classic epic poem, the Divine Comedy (La Divina Commedia). He is actually the only Pope shown to live in Paradise. But to get to paradise, John XXI met with an unfortunate accident. Shortly after a new wing was added to his Palace in Viterbo, Italy, a section of the poorly constructed roof collapsed in on him while he was asleep in his bed. He died of his injuries eight days later.

Seeing as the previous prehistoric monster list was a hit and I’m very happy about it, I decided to submit the list of the monsters which deserved a spot in the list (and which I did consider) but didn’t get selected at the end. Thanks for the comments on the first list, enjoy this one, and happy Easter!

10. Basilosaur

The Basilosaurs were primitive whales that looked rather like sea serpents, with small, reptilian-looking heads and very long and slender bodies. They lived during the Eocene, a time of warm oceans, so they didn’t have to store great amounts on fat to keep their body temperature in cold waters as modern day whales do. Basilosaurs were the top predators of their time, feeding on anything they could catch, including sharks and smaller whales. The largest Basilosaurs were in the 20-30 meter long range. An interesting fact is that, when the first basilosaur remains were found, they were thought to belong to a giant sea lizard or snake, hence the dinosaurian-sounding name!

9. Argentavis

Argentavis was the largest flying bird that we know of; it had a wingspan of 8.5 meters! That’s larger than most known pterodactyls. Argentavis lived in South America and looked basically like a giant vulture; it belonged to the group of teratorns, which were similar to today’s condors but better adapted for a predatory lifestyle, instead of just scavenging on other animal’s kills. Some scientists believe that Argentavis’ smaller relatives were possibly the inspiration for the Thunderbird legends of Native Americans. But Argentavis itself was never seen by humans, for it went extinct 6 million years ago.

8. Dunkleosteus

A gigantic armored fish that ruled the oceans during the Devonian period, long before sharks took over. This monster could grow up to 10 meters long and had jaws shaped like double blades; it had one of the most powerful bites of all times and some scientists believe that it could probably bite through metal if it was alive today! It was also protected by a thick plate armor that made it rather slow compared to modern day sharks, but since most of its prey weren’t too fast either, that wasn’t necessarily a problem. There was only one thing Dunkleosteus was afraid of; larger members of its same species. Indeed, there is evidence that these fish ate each other once in a while.

7. Chalicothere

The Chalicothere was a prehistoric relative of horses, but instead of hooves, it had sharp claws that were an useful weapon against predators.
In order to keep the claws from wearing out, the Chalicothere walked on its knuckles, like an ape, and it probably looked like a strange cross between a horse and a gorilla, or perhaps a giant sloth. This amazing beastie lived in Africa, Eurasia and North America during the Eocene to Pliocene periods, and despite its monstrous looks, it was completely vegetarian.

6. Sea scorpion

Although closely related to scorpions, these monsters actually belonged to a different group, the eurypterids, which ruled the oceans during the Ordovician period, and existed for millions of years before finally going extinct at the end of the Permian period. These giant marine bugs looked like a bizarre cross between a scorpion and a lobster, with a tapering tail armed with either a venomous harpoon-like spine or a flat swimming fin, depending on the species. They were able to survive on land, but spent most of their time underwater, where they fed upon any smaller creature they could catch. The largest sea scorpions could grow up to three meters long or more!

5. Mosasaur

Mosasaurs are often thought to be marine dinosaurs, but they are actually close relatives to today’s lizards and snakes. These reptiles ruled the oceans during the late Cretaceous period, and were extremely voracious; among the prey animals found in the stomach cavity of mosasaurs are sharks, giant squid, and smaller marine reptiles, including other mosasaurs. They had many razor sharp, serrated teeth (even in the roof of the mouth!) and could grow up to 20 meters long! That’s bigger than the biggest carnivorous dinosaurs, making mosasaurs the largest known predators of the Late Cretaceous (sorry, T-Rex…)

4. Doedicurus

Doedicurus was a relative to today’s armadillos, but it could grow up to the size of a VolksWagen Beetle (around 4 meters long and weighing up to 2 tons), and had a long tail armed with a deadly, spikey club, quite similar to those used by knights during Medieval times. Fortunately, it was a vegetarian; its deadly tail club was a defensive weapon only, and it came handy against the blood thirsty predators it shared its habitat with, such as sabertoothed cats and gigantic jaguars. Doedicurus lived in South America during the Pleistocene and became extinct about 11.000 years ago.

3. Elasmotherium

Elasmotherium was a gigantic rhinoceros that lived in the steppes of Asia during the Pliocene and Pleistocene periods. At 7 tons, it was as heavy as a Tyrannosaurus rex! This formidable beast had one single, two meter-long horn coming out of its forehead, and some scientists believe that it was the inspiration for the first unicorn stories, which were told within the creature’s former range. (Personally I think it’s a neat idea, much better than a corny little pony, but that’s just me…) Elasmotherium is also noted for its legs, which were longer than those of other rhinos and allowed it to gallop at high speeds despite its incredible size. It is possible that this incredible beast had no enemies at all once it reached its adult size.

2. Megalania

Technically known as Varanus priscus, Megalania was a gigantic lizard closely related to the Komodo dragons of our days. It was however much larger, up to 7 meters long, maybe more, and armed with a set of extremely sharp, serrated teeth most similar to those of meat eating dinosaurs. Just like its living relatives, Megalania seems to have been venomous (monitor lizards were recently discovered to produce venom, which combined with nasty bacteria in their saliva explains the Australian aborigin saying that “a goanna’s bite does never heal”). Its venomous bite and razor sharp teeth allowed Megalania to kill prey as large as the rhinoceros-sized marsupials that roamed Australia during the Pleistocene. But what makes this reptile really scary is that it coexisted with humans, and probably ate them once in a while before finally going extinct 40.000 years ago.

1. Pliosaur

It is kind of surprising that pliosaurs had to wait until the airing of famous TV show Walking with Dinosaurs in 1999 to become famous. Known since 1841, these humongous reptiles were the absolute rulers of the Jurassic and early Cretaceous seas, and actually, they include the largest predatory animals known to science. Some of them, such as Liopleurodon and Kronosaurus could grow up to 10, 15 or even 18 meters long, and fragmentary remains and bite marks on the bones of other marine reptiles suggest that the largest were within the 20-25 meter range!

CEBU CITY â€" Five construction workers were pinned to death while six others sustained head and body injuries when part of the mall building they were working on collapsed at 1 a.m. Wednesday in Barangay Tisa, this city.

The workers, all belonging to the CYC Construction Company, were working on shift for 24 hours to beat the April 30 grand opening of the Gaisano Capital mall but the firewall at the right side of the building collapsed, dragging the concrete and metal beams and an electric transformer to the ground.

The five fatalities, identified as brothers Junnie and Christian Dilan, Teodolfo Ditomal, Lindon Melendres, and Argie Ceniza, have been continuosly working on the right side of the mall building past 1 a.m. even as other workers were already out for a break. There were 27 construction workers on shift during the time of the incident.

Arnel Pacible, one of the six injured workers said he noticed the firewall already leaning a little to one side but ignored this, saying they were ordered to work double-time to finish the mall on schedule. Other parts of the three-story building have already been completed.

While working on the finishing touches of the wall, Pacible said the firewall on the right side suddenly collapsed, hitting his fellow workers who were working on the beams of the ceiling on the ground floor.

“It was so sudden. I noticed rubble falling and then the entire firewall collapsed,” said Pacible, who was fortunate to live and tell the story.

He and five others, Jerome Sios-e, Roel Pasaje, Noel Lucero, Joy Manceras, and Ricardo Villega, were rushed to the Cebu City Medical Center by fellow workers.

“First there was a loud banging sound and then what followed were cries for help from our fellow workers,” a worker, who had been on break, said.

Other workers and Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation personnel tried to retrieve the five pinned workers but they were declared dead by the time they reached the hospital due to severe head and body injuries.
