4. Beagle

Beagles tend to follow their nose, which makes them exceptional at detection work. Bed bugs became a major problem for businesses and homeowners over the past few years, so the Beagle came to the rescue. With their excellent noses, exterminators and business owners enlisted the dog's incredible abilities to find where bed bugs were hiding so humans could get rid of them.

Other names:  English Beagle
Country of origin:  Great Britain

Most famous:  Snoopy is billed as "the world's most famous Beagle" even if he's just a comic strip character.

Snoopy as the World War I flying ace

But it wasn't only Charles Schulz who honored the Beagle.  Writers William Shakespeare, John Webster, John Dryden, Thomas Tickell, Henry Fielding and William Cowper, and Alexander Pope (in his translation of Homer's Iliad) referred to the dog in their works.

Following the Apollo I fire, Snoopy became the official mascot of aerospace safety, testing and the rebuilding of the Apollo Program, due to his refusal to accept defeat and his "'outside the doghouse' way of looking at things." A series of Snoopy-in-Space ("Astrobeagle") products arrived with this campaign, and originals are still prized.

Blue-Balled Monkeys Among Top 10 New Species

May 24, 2013 / by Tim Wall

Blue Testicled Monkey

The International Institute for Species Exploration at Arizona State University announced its list of the top 10 species officially described in 2012. The publication of the list marks the birthday of Carolus Linnaeus, founder of the modern system of species classification.

Male lesula monkeys (Cerocopithecus lomamiensis) have bald, brilliant blue testicles, buttocks and perineum. Locals in the Congo regularly hunt the monkey for food, but primatologists didn’t catch their first glimpse of the shy mammal until 2007. Lesulas are only the second monkeys to be discovered in Africa in 28 years.

just curious...

One question that arises: Does the butterfly feeding help, hurt or have no impact on the turtles? Torres said it's not completely clear, but the teary endeavor probably has little impact on the turtles, other than perhaps making them more vulnerable to predators like big cats, since the butterflies can obstruct their vision.

When swimming in salty seas, a marine animal with land ancestry runs the risk of dehydration because its body fluids are much less salty than the surrounding water. Sea turtles have large tear glands that concentrate salt and shed it in huge, salty tears. "If such glands are not present," says Hirayama, "the turtles could not thrive in a marine environment."

Another enormous flower found in Indonesia is the Amorphophallus titanum, or Titan arum.

Technically, the Titan arum is not a single flower. It is a cluster of many tiny flowers, called an inflorescence. The Titan arum has the largest unbranched inflorescence of all flowering plants. The plant can reach heights of 7 to 12 feet and weigh as much as 170 pounds.

thus:

Rafflesia is the largest individual flower. Titan arum bears the largest inflorescence.

tale of the, uh, tape and weighing scale:

Rafflesia arnoldii - 100 centimeters (39 inches) in diameter, and weigh up to 10 kilograms (22 pounds)

Rafflesia manillana - petals can reach 90 centimeters (35.43 inches) across, (no weight given)

one website claims that this is the smallest of all the Rafflesia flowers, which may be an erroneous claim because the smallest is Rafflesia baletei, which is 12 centimeters (4.72 inches) in diameter
#17928
another claimant:

Rafflesia arnoldii found in indonesia

The flower with the world's largest bloom is the Rafflesia arnoldii. This rare flower is found in the rainforests of Indonesia. It can grow to be 3 feet across and weigh up to 15 pounds! It is a parasitic plant, with no visible leaves, roots, or stem. It attaches itself to a host plant to obtain water and nutrients. When in bloom, the Rafflesia emits a repulsive odor, similar to that of rotting meat. This odor attracts insects that pollinate the plant.

#17929
this is a flower?  (though i won't question biologists, taxonomists, and foresters.)

Rafflesia (Rafflesia manillana)

Description

The dramatic Rafflesia flowers are the largest single flowers in the world; the leathery petals can reach over 90 centimetres across. Rafflesia is a parasite that depends completely upon its host; the majority of the plant’s tissues exist as thread-like strands entirely within the host’s cells. These host plants are vines of Tetrastigma spp., and the Rafflesia plant is itself not visible until the reproduction stage when flowers first bud through the woody vine and then open into the magnificent spectacle that is world-renowned today. The flowers can take up to ten months to develop from the first visible bud to the open bloom, which may last no more than a few days.

Currently 17 species of Rafflesia are recognised and these mainly differ in the morphology of their flowers. In general however, the flowers consist of five leathery petals that are orange in colour and mottled with cream-coloured warts. There is a deep well in the centre of the flower containing a central raised disc that supports many vertical spines. The sexual organs are located beneath the rim of the disk, and male and female flowers are separate.
