Quote from: Lorenzo on October 15, 2013, 11:32:37 PMthere are people around bohol that are sleeping outside and in open spaces for fear of another quake. roads are also cracked, bridges are damaged.

my brother's family of four had pitched a tent outside their house, just to make sure.  they take turns staying awake to warn the rest, in case.  he said the aftershocks are just as uncomfortably strong.

i hope the valencia church is intact?

1717 ? wow. even before there was a united states of america, baclayon church was already there...

looks like, though there are 3 claimants to being the oldest church in the philippines---san agustin in manila, sto. niño basilica in cebu, and baclayon church in bohol.  these are all correct if one takes the nuances of what it is to be the oldest, i.e., oldest structure, oldest church establishment, etc. :)

Initial data released by the USGS said there were two earthquakes, both centered in Bohol.

The quake was followed by 110 aftershocks, Phivolcs director Renato Solidum said in a press conference at the NDRRMC.

Solidum said more damage can be expected in the areas closest to the quake's epicenter, specifically in Bohol and Cebu.

more update:

Bohol Governor Edgar Chatto said on DZMM TeleRadyo that more are being rushed to the hospital and that local government units are already preparing for aftershocks.

According to the Philippine Information Agency in Cebu, aftershocks continue to be felt.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reassured the public that no tsunami is expected to hit due to the earthquake, but Lt Cmndr Armand Balilo, spokesperson of the Philippine Coast Guard, said they have suspended docking of big boats in Cebu and Bohol for now, following damages in their Tagbilaran station.

"Thank God today is a holiday," Quisimbing told Rappler. Loss of life and property damage would have been much more if classes and offices were not closed to observe Id-ul-Adha or the Feast of Sacrifice.

Flights to and from Tagbilaran and Cebu have also been suspended. - With reports from Natashya Gutierrez/Rappler.com

an update:

Bohol Gov Edgar Chatto, in an interview on ANC, said there are incoming reports of damage across the province, particularly to old buildings.

"[The quake] was really very strong. People now are a little bit in a situation of panic," Chatto told ANC.

People in the province are also monitoring abnormal sea level changes for possibility of a tsunami, but Chatto said there is little chance of it because the province is surrounded by other islands.

"We are still getting in touch with mayors, disaster officials of towns facing the Mindanao Sea, ito ang malawak," he said. "We are just asking people to be cautious but not to be panicky."

The Tardigrade

Can survive: Basically anything.

These millimeter long, segmented animals can survive just about everything. Temperatures between just above absolute zero and 300 degrees Fahrenheit are no problem. 1200 times atmospheric pressure? The tardigrade just shrugs it off. It doesn’t really care about dehydration either, seeing as it can go 10 years without water. 1,000 times the lethal dose of radiation for humans is another non-factor. When testing the true extent of the tardigrade's resilience, scientists went so far as to send it to outer space in 2007. The result? Most of the tardigrades that went on the mission came back entirely unscathed. Plus they're kind of weirdly adorable.

The Pompeii Worm

Can survive: Extreme heat, variance in temperature.

These deep-sea worms live exclusively in thermal vents in the ocean floor. Their tails are in the vents, which achieve temperatures up to 176 degrees Fahrenheit. Their heads however, poke out of the vents in order for the pompeii worms to capture prey. This results in half of their bodies experiencing temperatures over 100 degrees lower. It's thought that their resistance to heat is due to a coating of specialized bacteria on their bodies, which may provide a large degree of insulation for the worm.

The Red Flat Bark Beetle

Can survive: Extreme cold.

This insect, which is native to the northern areas of Alaska and Canada, is able to resist temperatures up to -150 degrees Celsius (-238 Fahrenheit) by producing an antifreeze protein that prevents the crystallization of its blood. Its blood is also fortified with glycerol, which further halts freezing.

The Immortal Jellyfish

Can survive: The aging process.

These jellyfish have the ability to revert back to their infant stages in adverse conditions, making them effectively immortal. There doesn't seem to be any limit on the number of times that they are able to revert back to their infancy. Unfortunately, they're highly vulnerable to predation and disease every time they live out their immature, smaller stages.

The Himalayan Jumping Spider

Can survive: Low pressure, freezing temperatures.

The polar opposite of the devil worm, this spider holds the record for the animal that claims residency at a higher point than any other (4.1 miles above sea level). It’s able to survive long periods without food, freezing temperatures, and a distinct lack of atmospheric pressure. The only sources of nutrition available to the Himalayan jumping spider are the tiny insects that get blown up the mountain by the high winds.

6 Extreme Animals Sure To Survive The Apocalypse

If we've learned anything from science class, it's that nature is constantly trying to kill us. No matter how hard it tries though, it will never take down these animals.

The Devil Worm

Can survive: Crippling pressure, lack of oxygen, high temperature.

This species of nematode, only recently discovered in 2011, has been found living up to 2.2 miles below the surface of the Earth. It blew away the previous record for multicellular organisms by a full mile. These worms spend their lives in total darkness, drinking 12,000 year old water and eating simple bacteria.

But perhaps, the film's best assets are its visuals and technical achievements, which could compete with those from Hollywood. Budgeted at US$22.5 million, "Mr. Go" is reportedly the first South Korean film to be fully shot in 3D. The baseball games, the helicopter chase, and the rampage scene in the finale looked quite well as the detailed, animated gorilla appeared realistic with clear emotions and character.

In terms of story flow, "Mr. Go" moves in a nice fashion but lacked some character progression. The film also starts a little lousy with a simple narration but it becomes exhilarating until the end, where Ling Ling finally meets his match - an unexpected but familiar foe - in an epic baseball battle that best wraps up the movie.

Overall, "Mr. Go" is a good family film that won't waste your time. With an insane premise, visual marvels and a compelling narrative that will give you just the right blend of suspense, humor and drama, this gorilla movie has definitely hit a home run.

Distributed by Reality Multimedia, Inc, "Mr. Go" opens in SM Cinemas on October 16, Wednesday.

Making the viewers feel a variety of emotions, "Mr. Go" is definitely short of boredom. Certain scenes, like those showing the bond between Wei Wei and Ling Ling, could get you nearly teary-eyed. On the other hand, some moments will surely make you throb with excitement, particularly the baseball matches and the part where helicopters chase the gorilla on the stadium roof.

And between thrill and "aww" moments, "Mr. Go" also abounds in hilarity, which is mostly seen in parts where the Ling Ling and Sung Choong Soo relate to each other. Even the bad guys are comical. There is also no lack of surprises as the film is packed with twists and turns, especially during the final baseball match.

Seen as a potential boost to the sport, the South Korean professional baseball league allows Ling Ling to play for the Doosan Bears. Hitting home runs each game and propelling his team to the tournament finals, Ling Ling instantly takes the league by storm, and becomes the lovable baseball star "Mr. Go."

But conflict arises when the gorilla showed his wild side in one game where a spectator was hurt. Then later in the film, Ling Ling sustains an injury, endangering the Doosan Bears' championship bid and Sung Choong Soo's further plans. This also cast doubts on the friendship between Wei Wei and the gorilla.

The film depicts the tale of 15-year-old Wei Wei, a ringmaster of a circus in China that houses two gorillas, the amusing Ling Ling and the disobedient Lei Ting. When her baseball fanatic grandfather dies in an earthquake, the teenager is left to head the circus - also a home to dozens of orphans - and pay the huge debt of the old man, a sports gambling addict.

The solution to Wei Wei's financial woes? The gorilla Ling Ling, whom she helped raise and train to play baseball. With his beast-like batting skills, Ling Ling attracts famous South Korean baseball agent Sung Choong Soo, who promises the circus girl a huge paycheck if the gorilla plays in South Korea.

How does this sound to you: a high-budget 3D film that tells the crazy story of a teenage circus girl and his 285-kilogram gorilla who can play baseball?

Not your usual family-oriented film with a formulaic plot, Mr. Go offers a rather engaging narrative packed with ape-sized laughs and emotions that could warm anybody's heart and make it pound with thrill. Flaunting technical achievements in Asian filmmaking, the movie is a definite visual joy for all ages.

Doctors were not sure whether Nagy would actually be able to attend. But with monitor cords slipped under his tuxedo and a tracheal tube attached, he made it down the aisle and gave a thumb's up, according to the Plain Dealer.

Nurse practitioners Jacky Uljanic and Julie Ray volunteered their time to stay with him throughout the day to monitor his condition.

"After Scott told us his goal, he was our inspiration," Uljanic said. "It makes it all worth it."

"There are no guarantees in life," Nagy said. "This is a bonus."

Sarah Nagy said it was a struggle to move the wedding forward so quickly. "But it is what I wanted since I was a little girl, for my father to escort me down the aisle. My future husband said, 'You will get your wish.' "

"The first night at the hospital, Scott said, 'Just remember, I have to be at my daughter's wedding in October,'" his wife Jean Nagy said.

Nagy attended his daughter's bridal shower and even helped her pick out a wedding dress. There was no way he would miss out on the wedding itself, Jean Nagy said.

Bride Sarah Nagy, right, begins to cry as she is escorted by her father, Scott, down the aisle during her wedding ceremony Oct. 12, 2013 at First Lutheran Church.

An Ohio man walked his daughter down the aisle on a hospital gurney.

Scott Nagy, 56, who is terminally ill, arrived at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Strongsville Saturday by ambulance to fulfill a promise to his daughter Sarah Nagy, 24, reported The Plain Dealer.

"It was a promise I made in March, to walk her down the aisle," Nagy told the Cleveland newspaper. "She's my princess. This is my definition of walking down the aisle."

some fail, as can be expected.

a 78-year-old american white male shed tears copiously because his 42-year-old wife had a stroke.  he turned out to be healthier.

moral lesson 1: ayaw kasuko palabi kun di mabayran ug utang aron di ma-stroke.

moral lesson 2: gusto ka naay moalima nimo sa imong katiguwang, hire a nurse.

just being comfortable in my own skin, simply being happy with what i am, with loved ones, with my environment, with or without money; knowing how to flow with life's currents and being at peace with god.

where did manila go?  hehe.  i remember some young manilans who are too engrossed with their city, they've never gone south of luzon really, that they believe that anything south of manila is so backward, they had to ask what mode of transportation cebu has and whether there are cars there or not.  pissed off thus, i had to tell them that we use brooms for traveling in cebu the way harry potter does.

it might be better not to have a legislative body.  it's supposed to be a body for lawmaking, but we already have too many laws and we fail mostly in their enforcement.  besides, they'd rather investigate and identify projects for funding than make laws.  and the laws they make usually exempt themselves.

they get their massive pay in full whether they're present or not.  imagine the likes of revilla, estrada, lapid and sotto filming movies and still getting their senate salaries and allowances, without deductions for absences.  that's double compensation, but did they ever apply this law to themselves?

besides, the currency in the picture is euro, not the u.s. dollar, and the u.s. is where she is.

she may have gone to europe for vacations; that would be peanuts for her.  but to be in europe with all that money, if that picture were true... uh, that's unbelievable.  she'd be caught and questioned pronto.  her credit cards/expense accounts can make the rounds in all the expensive places in europe.  no lugging of heavy cash was necessary.  that would be too plebeian for her.

Ms. J. L. Napoles.

What's your opinion?

posed.  that's not her.  this idea i think is because the whistle-blowers have revealed that money came in big bags and sometimes there was no more space in the bedroom, they had to place the money bags in the bath tub.  as for the napoles daughter bathing in money, it's more figurative than literal.

Cheers to the next couple of months. So begins my 2nd year of the Ph.D journey! Next year I have to design my doctoral thesis. Yikes! Hadlok ko gamay. :P
