Question and Answer / Re: What is demonology?
October 24, 2013, 09:31:06 AM
if memory serves me right, my understanding (because i was told by a priest more than 2 decades ago) is that demonology was a subject in seminaries, pre-vatican 2.  that must have been in line with the idea that one should know one's enemy.

purportedly this was dropped as a subject for those studying for the priesthood in keeping with the belief that the 7 gifts of the holy spirit, including the gift of exorcism, can be had by anyone, laymen included.

i wish fr chic is around to either confirm or negate this understanding of mine.

5 Promote healing

Ascorbic acid (vitamin C), found in abundance in lemons, promotes wound healing, and is an essential nutrient in the maintenance of healthy bones, connective tissue, and cartilage. As noted previously, vitamin C also displays anti-inflammatory properties. Combined, vitamin C is an essential nutrient in the maintenance of good health and recovery from stress and injury.

4 Clear skin

Vitamin C and other antioxidants in lemons combat free radical damage. Free radical damage â€" especially as caused by UV exposure and environmental toxins â€" is responsible for many symptoms of aging. Antioxidant intake can help offset this damage, minimizing wrinkles. Further, lemon juice can be applied topically to scars and age spots to help reduce their appearance. Traditionally used as a liver stimulant, lemon water is also believed to help purge toxins from the blood, helping to keep skin clear of blemishes.

3 Aid digestion

Citrus flavonols are believed responsible for lemon’s traditional use as a digestive tonic. Believed to stimulate and purify the liver, lemon juice is traditionally understood to support digestive hydrochloric acid in the stomach further aiding digestion. Vitamin C status has been associated with reduced risk of peptic ulcers caused by the bacteria Helicobacter pylori.

2 Alkalize the body

Although the tartness of a lemon may make them seem acidic, lemons are actually one of the most alkalizing foods for the body. Lemons contain both citric and ascorbic acid, weak acids easily metabolized from the body allowing the mineral content of lemons to help alkalize the blood.

1 Support immune function

Lemons are high in antioxidant vitamin C, known for its supportive role in healthy immune function, which may reduce the risk of respiratory infection. Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) found in lemons demonstrates anti-inflammatory effects, and is used as complementary support for asthma and other respiratory symptoms. Lemons also contain saponins, which show antimicrobial properties that may help keep cold and flu at bay. Last but not least, ascorbic acid enhances iron absorption in the body; iron plays an important role in immune function.

We tend to reach for those warm beverages in the morning like coffee and tea, but try starting your day with some warm lemon water first to kick-start digestion. The water doesn’t always have to be warm, but it should be purified. Simply use half a fresh lemon per large glass of water or to taste and sip throughout the day. On a simple level, fresh lemons take plain old water up a notch. Here are 5 health benefits of drinking lemon water that elevate drinking it for reasons beyond just taste:

Starting every morning with a glass of warm lemon water is actually a ritual in Ayurveda or Yogic traditions, used to stimulate digestion for the day and clear the body of any toxins that may have settled in the digestive tract overnight. While it is tricky to apply the strict burden of evidence expected by Western science to traditional practices (often called “folk medicine”) that originated long before modern medical science standards were developed, research on the nutritional elements found in lemons suggests the numerous health benefits traditionally associated with drinking fresh lemon water daily may have merit.

Smoothies can be packed with protein; pre-workout energizers, hydrators, and post-workout recovery accelerators can deliver performance-enhancing nutrients; herbal teas can soothe or energize â€" all of these beverages have a functional purpose to meet specific wellness needs. And then there’s a less obvious, simple, blender-free drink that serves a mighty wellness-enhancing purpose. Providing more than just hydration, fresh lemon juice and water can deliver surprising benefits.

But most marine biologists believe there still is not enough evidence to conclude that oarfish are harbingers of earthquakes. The beachings, they say, may be coincidental.

“I don’t discredit or disrespect the Japanese theory at all,” Pat Abbott, a seismologist at San Diego State University told reporters. “The science and study just isn’t there. There’s a big difference between suggesting something like that and proving it. What did an animal sense that maybe we didn’t that told them about a coming event?”

http://abcnews.go.com/
#17514

A centuries-old Japanese myth holds that oarfish beach themselves prior to an earthquake. One 2010 report found that some Japanese feared an earthquake in that country following oarfish sightings prior to destructive tremors in Chile and Haiti.

The fish, believed to be the ocean’s largest scaled fish, also washed up in the months before the 2011 earthquake and tsunami near Sendai, Japan.

Some scientists have speculated that the ancient myth could be rooted in reality, speculating that the deep-dwelling fish might be attuned to seismic changes.

Monster Oarfish Beachings Raise Earthquake Questions

By Russell Goldman
Oct 22, 2013

A series of serpent-like sea creatures have recently been found washed up on California beaches, leading some scientists to speculate that an ancient myth about the fish portending earthquakes could be true.

In recent weeks several oarfish, rarely seen giants of the deep that can grow up to 50-feet long, have been found along the southern California coast.

The beauty of Bohol

Bohol’s mountainous interior is home to rare flora and fauna, including the famed Philippine Tarsiers.

About 65-140 million years ago, Bohol was underwater except for some parts such as Mt. Malibalibod and the terrains of Alicia.

Over time, the land we call Bohol slowly surfaced. The skeletons of the coral reefs slowly became limestone, the most abundant mineral in the surface of Bohol.

These were used to make the colonial churches ruined by the earthquake.

Bohol is not as earthquake prone as other areas in the country.

No one thought that its beautiful surface would shake as hard as it did, taking hundreds of lives and injuring many more.  â€" TJD, GMA News

Eyewitness accounts include elephants screaming and running for higher ground, dogs refusing to go outdoors, flamingos abandoning their low-lying breeding areas, and zoo animals rushing into their shelters that could not be enticed to come back out.

The belief that animals can ‘sense’ an impending earthquake or tsunami has been around for centuries.

post-tsunami, sri lanka

“Wildlife experts believe animals' more acute hearing and other senses might enable them to hear or feel the Earth's vibration, tipping them off to approaching disaster long before humans realize what's going on,” the report said.
#17525
Animals have a ‘sixth sense’?

Caballo said that they are not certain if the tarsiers really did ‘predict’ that the earthquake was coming because it is not scientifically proven.

But it is believed that they have a natural tendency to know where to go and what to do in the event of a natural disaster.

Similar odd behavior was observed before a tsunami hit Sri Lanka and India in 2005.

"Wild and domestic animals seemed to know what was about to happen and fled to safety," a report said.
#17526
The sanctuary had to close because the earthquake ruined their houses. It opened Thursday to allow tourists to see the famed endangered species.

“It was the first time we encountered such strong earthquake and were able to observe them a day before the 7.2-magnitude earthquake na restless po sila,” she said.

#17527
Of the 300 to 500 tarsiers in the sanctuary, only five to 10 were allowed to be viewed by the tourists. As of now, only three to five are present.

“Hinahanap pa namin ‘yung iba. Nagtatago pa kasi sila,” Cabillo said.

The tarsiers were believed to have relocated and have gone to safer ground before the earthquake hit.

The workers manning the sanctuary weren’t as fortunate.
#17528
Strange behavior before the quake

The tarsiers in the Philippine Tarsier Sactuary, for instance, were unharmed, said Joannie Mary Cabillo, Program Manager of the Philippine Tarsier Foundation.

“They were unusually active a day before the earthquake. Palipat-lipat sila ng puno,” she said in a phone interview with GMA News Online.

“They know what to do. They know where to hide and everything.”

“Generally, unless masira ‘yung habitat nila ‘pag may earthquake, they’d be fine. Alam nila pag may earthquake. They know what to do,” said Dr. Arvin Diesmos, chief herpetologist of the National Museum.

“Yung mga nasa wild, wala naman sa kanila (ang earthquake). May chance sila na maka-escape from one tree to another,” said Dr. Stephen Toledo, officer-in-charge of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Wildlife Bureau.

Bohol wildlife 'saw' the quake coming, caretakers say

By KIM LUCES, GMA News
October 18, 2013

It's a phenomenon that has puzzled observers for a long time: How is it that animals seem to know when an earthquake is coming?

Experts and caretakers say that Bohol's wildlife, particularly its famous and seemingly fragile tarsiers, may have been fazed but escaped largely unharmed by the devastating quake that hit the island on October 15.

I don't rant here in facebook, but this time is an exemption (and I am purposefully repeating myself here).

Overheard something a while ago. This person was just a few inch away from me. His name is Mr. Cortes of Let's Do Business ABS-CBN Cebu host.

He called somebody sa iyang cellphone...

Mr. Cortes: Maayong gabie bay! I heard u are planning to run for a government position. Pareho diay ta ani. Don't you think this is the best time, a good timing for exposure in Bohol. Mangadto ta bay, magdala lang ta medical mission para mas nindot kaayo ang exposure makita both Cebu & Bohol. I'll call someone para matabangan ta dala medical team.

Hanged up then called up another person.

Mr. Cortes: Hello amigo nako nga gwapo! I am planning to go to Bohol. Let's bring Southwester University Medical Mission Team..... Oh yes, for exposure pero ipasekreto lang nato that's why i need to bring ur medical mission team. This is the best time to go there.

Then I turned my back kay sobra pa sa kasukaon akong gibati.

Mr. Cortes, ako ni binisay-on dri dapita para ka makasabot every single letter in the alphabet. Ang Bohol KARONG PANAHONA dili lugar para sa pagpasikat nimu, nungka lugar para sa audition sa mga artistahon, labaw na dili lugar para sa pagpa cool guy nimu, samot na dili lugar sa pag "good time good time" nimu!!!

Philippine Red Cross secretary-general Gwendolyn Pang, meanwhile, explained they follow a strict criteria in selecting beneficiaries because they don't have enough relief goods for all residents. She said the Red Cross has its own list of beneficiaries in the quake-hit areas.

She said they have to be accountable to their donors.

"Yung ie-entrust namin yun goods hindi pwede yun kasi pagbalik natin sa Manila, tatanungin ng donors: 'Saan nyo dinala yun goods?' Di namin masasagot yun," she said.

"Very important talaga na kami mismo...nakavalidate sa listahan namin, sinong pamilya ang tumanggap at pipirma sila."
#17547
He also appealed for understanding, saying he has no intention of taking credit for the relief goods since it is his last term as mayor.

"What I didn't like is they just came in and we were not given the opportunity to discuss the mechanism on how to do it...At that time we could not produce the list on our own because we were tied up in responding to the needs, people are dying, people need food... Yung tatay pumila, yung nanay pumila, yung anak pumila. A lot of people were disenfranchised, and I said if we keep doing this magkakagulo, nagkagulo nga," he said.

"So I said if you insist on doing this, better stop and get out of this place."

Mayor drives out Red Cross workers distributing quake aid

MANILA - Maribojoc, Bohol Mayor Leoncio Evasco defended Tuesday his decision to drive out Red Cross volunteers who were distributing relief goods to quake victims in his town.

The Red Cross has accused the mayor of insisting on turning over the relief goods to the local government, which the group opposed because it is against Red Cross policy.

Evasco, however, said he was only after the fair distribution of the relief goods since some families were getting more than their share.

Bohol Earthquake 2013 / Re: No second quake
October 22, 2013, 11:54:32 AM
Solidum explained that the north offshore fault in Bohol, which most likely generated last Tuesday’s earthquake, would have to “save up enough energy for hundreds of years before it could move the northern side of Bohol and Cebu again.”

Moreover, no one can really predict when and where an earthquake would happen, much less how strong it would be.

“So to our countrymen, the netizens, don’t believe what’s written on Facebook and SMS unless you hear the civil defense, Phivolcs, local officials, talk about an earthquake. Let’s not add to the confusion, if there’s still confusion, by spreading hoax text messages. This does not help anyone,” Solidum said.

Sixteen Phivolcs scientists and information specialists have been going around Bohol to study the fault plane that was likely the source of the Oct. 15 earthquake on the northern side of the province, as well as educate local officials and residents in the aftermath of the temblor.

Bohol Earthquake 2013 / No second quake
October 22, 2013, 11:53:55 AM
No second quake

Also on Monday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) debunked rumors that spread over the weekend that another major temblor was going to shake the provinces of Bohol and Cebu anew.

Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum appealed to the public, especially netizens, to be more circumspect in passing information they see on social media and in text messages.

“There’s a very, very small chance of another earthquake as strong as 7.2 magnitude happening in Bohol and Cebu,” Solidum said in a press conference at the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

Mel Abandula-Castro:

Their house badly damaged, my grandparents moved to safer ground camping out in a makeshift tent in a remote barrio in Maribojoc. My grandmother has never left my 92 year-old grandfather's side, who is still recovering from a stroke. She has been sleeping on a wooden plank for several nights now; and when the rain would pour in the night, she would curl up her knees to keep her feet from getting wet. When I visited them for the first time since the earthquake, I found they were not given their relief goods because 'they could no longer vote'. I'm casting aside my outrage at this utter disrespect to my grandparents, senior citizens who deserve to be given utmost attention and courtesy especially at this time of need. But if there's one thing I realized, it is that true love will always stand the test of time that not even the most terrible of tremors can shake, much less destroy. â€" with Israel B. Malasa.

Valte said the Palace had received reports that “some local politicians” were withholding relief from towns where the goods were needed.

She said Interior Secretary Mar Roxas had issued orders to make sure that relief operations were not “tainted with politics.”

“If these allegations are proven against some supposed politicians, then we will not hesitate to move against them,” Valte said.

Relief goods started to arrive in Sagbayan town in Bohol on Saturday and hundreds of residents lined up at the municipal hall expecting to receive food packages donated by private groups and business organizations in Manila.

But many went home empty-handed.

Resident Tita Fajardo said only allies of local officials got top priority in the distribution of the goods, leaving nothing for indigent people who had been waiting for help for five days.

Fajardo said 30 people from remote villages lined up for relief at the municipal hall on Wednesday but were turned away.

“They prioritized their allies rather than those who badly needed [help],” she said.

Fajardo said she decided to give to the rejected villagers 15 relief tickets that she had planned to give to her neighbors because the indigents really had nothing to eat.

when the earth rumbles, it rumbles for everyone.  and god forbid, it can swallow everyone.  PLEASE LANG UNTA, no politics in relief operations.

once one becomes mayor, one becomes everyone's mayor, not just to his supporters.  let's pray that this mayor in this particular town would not hijack anyone's effort to further her own family's dynastic ambitions.  the campaign period is a long way off.  never have i heard of relief operations that need a mayor's go-signal to operate.

this begs for some attention, whether the account is true or not:

I-DILG Ninu Ning Mayora

neat.  too bad that at this point in time anything that comes from any senator is suspect, especially solutions to headlined calamities.  another posturing?  another instance to have a politician's name in the news?  why not just do it and release the news when it is already approved as law?  as it is, all that he's talking about are mere plans.

coming from a senator who's known to know how to read the voting public's sentiment and being adept at riding on that sentiment to his advantage, well, cayetano still needs to explain why most, if not all, of his pork barrel releases went to taguig, where his wife is the mayor.
