The sculpts are going to be full of human hair and blood samples collected from more than 5,000 donors situated in 30 different locations all over the globe. The people who donated their DNA were given certificates to prove their contribution to the project. Hornsleth’s goal is for the samples to be used to bring humans and endangered species back to life in case of a disaster destroying life as we know it today.

If you want to participate in the project by donating a drop of your blood and 3-5 hairs, you can do it by either visiting one of Deep Storage Project events or buying a DIY kit online. The collections will carry one until mid November 2013.

The Hornsleth Deep Storage Project was created by Danish scientists and is meant to be executed in the end of 2013. The concept of the project involves descending series of sculpts into the Mariana trench which, with its 36,000 ft, is the deepest part of the world’s oceans. It is located approximately 200ft off Guam Island between the coasts of Indonesia, Japan and the Philippines.

Obama's 2014 budget for Nasa asked for $100-million for the asteroid project, but the overall costs may be as high as $2-billion.

“It's a little different way than just a date and a destination. We are really good at just picking dates and destinations. But that's really hard in this budget environment where things are constrained and we have flat budgets, et cetera et cetera, to pull that off,” said Gerstenmaier.

“It is not just a one-time thing. It actually feeds forward into the broader context of what we want to do with humans in space.”

The launch could happen as early as 2017 or as late as 2019.

After launch of the robotic mission, the journey to the asteroid would take a year and a half, and the act of towing it toward the moon could take another three and a half years, Nasa said.

The project would use a new fuel technology called solar electric propulsion.

“We are talking about engineering the solar system, in a way. We are talking about taking an asteroid which was once here, and then putting it into a useful orbit for our purposes,” said Chodas.

“This is a very large idea here that we are talking about and I think it will reinvigorate interest in the space program,” he said. - Sapa-AFP

The spacecraft used for travel there and back would be the Orion multi-purpose vehicle, which is being built but has not yet been used, as well as a new deep space rocket launcher.

The program aims to break new ground by increasing Nasa capabilities beyond low Earth orbit, where the International Space Station circles the globe.

Nasa has touted the planetary defence capabilities the project would build toward protecting the Earth from a potential hazardous asteroid collision, as well as the technology it would boost for future human missions to deep space.

President Barack Obama has proclaimed the project would be a key step on the way to sending humans to Mars by the 2030s.

Bill Gerstenmaier, associate administrator of Nasa's Human Exploration and Operations Directorate, described the asteroid mission as “pretty compelling.”

“If you think about grabbing an object in space and then manipulating it for our use and putting it into a destination where we could go back and routinely visit and let commercial companies go visit, I think that is a pretty compelling activity.”

Washington - The US space agency has narrowed its hunt for an asteroid to capture to three, Nasa said on Wednesday.

The asteroids fit the requirements of being between seven to 10 meters in size, and further study should be able to narrow the choice even more, scientists said at a conference in San Diego, California.

“We have two to three which we will characterise in the next year and if all goes well... those will be valid candidates that could be certified targets,” said Paul Chodas, senior scientist at the Nasa Near-Earth Object Program Office.

The plan is to send a robotic spacecraft to capture the asteroid and drag it into orbit around the Moon.

Once there, astronauts could visit the asteroid and take samples of it back to Earth for study.

The Mulleavys, to be clear, are very good at what they do, and yet they still stumbled. This is only a matter of my humble opinion, but I think it’s fashion that’s the problem here. For one thing, fashion is obsessed with iconography. And the fact is, iconography cuts awfully close to stereotype, most of the time. An icon is a distillation; it preserves only the essentials of someone or something, and cuts out all the mess. But the mess is the part, say, where the outfit the “chola” is wearing doesn’t define her. Her defiance and confidence are not the only things she feels about wearing that outfit on the street. The mess is the part where she’s a full human being, not a stereotype to be manipulated and wielded as a way to sell clothing.

And as another matter, there’s just something about the nature of clothing, I think, that is always going to leave it open to this kind of criticism. Clothing is, by its nature, an ephemeral statement: put it on, take it off, there’s something inherently flippant about it. You can’t make a lasting statement about the long history of a style of dress in something that within 12 hours will be in the laundry hamper, or on someone’s floordrobe.

There is, probably, some way to negotiate this no-win situation. One that leaps to mind is having your models be actual representatives of the culture you want to celebrate, rather than treating their style as something white women can try on for a day or two until the next trend comes along. That would smack much more of actually valuing the look rather than wanting to own it yourself. But that would require fashion folk to be aware in the first place that it is not their god-given right to mindlessly take whatever they’d like from everyone else, and that might just be too tall of an order.

8)
#17434
I certainly agree with Givhan that the collection doesn’t work. But I don’t think it’s because the models lacked “swagger.” In fact, it is hard to imagine a circumstance in which a bunch of presumably white models could have pulled that off. In fact, one shudders to think what might happen if a bunch of dimly informed people of any professional stripe were instructed to explicitly mimic the “confidence” of “Cholas.” You’re asking for a caricature, and you will almost certainly get one.

Welcome to the irritating world of cultural appropriation, where yes, sorry, you pretty much can’t win. Artists and free-culture types like to complain that in their business, appropriation is what’s for dinner; the more intellectual among them will whip out a copy of Lawrence Lessig’s theories about remix culture. And they are not totally wrong â€" there isn’t much by way of new ideas under the sun. But the idea that you can just pick and choose the images you employ in your work gets trickier when the main reason you’re in a position to pick and choose is that you are rich or white or even male. Being an outsider, you have a greater responsibility to make sure you’re representing a thing accurately and fully. And only the greatest of artists can manage it.

The fashion industry, like every other cultural industry on the planet, seems to be out of ideas. But since remakes and reboots aren’t really available to it, the primary mode of getting new blood in the clothing veins is to appropriate imagery from other cultures and subcultures. This, they do quite badly. We have had no less than three new examples of that this week. We have Diesel half-assedly incorporating burkas into an ad campaign, and Marc Jacobs using a graphic associated with a skinhead band on a $70 T-shirt in his fall line. In both those cases, the carelessness of the appropriation basically speaks for itself; there’s no way of interpreting this as an attempt to intelligently “remix” anything, just a craven way to use complicated phenomena as grease for the engines of capitalism. Yay.

Over at The Cut, meanwhile, Robin Givhan complains about a somewhat harder case. Laura and Kate Mulleavy’s Rodarte made a misstep in trying to emulate the Chola look with zebra prints and ruffles, she says. She puts it thusly, in typically breathless fashion prose:

Styles that germinate on the street form a protective armor of their own. They bond the wearer to a particular tribe. They communicate a bond across a crowded street corner. They bolster the strut of people who’ve been disenfranchised or ostracized from the Establishment. They impart confidence.

Yet there was little swagger on the Rodarte runway.

James Franco, Colin Farrel and Jason Sudikis with mustaches

Has Hollywood finally grown tired of the urban hipster beard and seven day stubble? It would appear so, according to the finely trimmed lip foliage of men like James Franco, Colin Farrell, and Jason Sudeikis. (Even Justin Bieber's upper lip hair is showing signs of life.) And while the facial fur is often associated with vintage porn stars, dictators, and washed up country stars, the resurgence isn't unwelcome by all: "Mustaches for some look new again and depending on the face and personality can fit well," says Vaughn Acord, owner of Mizu salon in New York City and stylist to celebs like Tom Brady, Ashton Kutcher, and Bruce Springsteen. Below, Acord lays out his rules for getting your Tom Selleck on:

1. Keep things tight. "A mustache should not curve into the mouth, so keeping it trimmed at the lip is key."

2. Don't be afraid to go old school. "When going long, remember your mustache can look nostalgic or from another era, so think about your overall look and consider if it fits."

3. But be prepared for the extra attention. "A mustache is one of the first things people notice, so make sure yours grows with a thickness and color you're willing to defend."

Slide Fire already sells bump-stocks for $370 that speed up the rate of fire for semiautomatics. The company also sells semiautomatic rifles that have already been accessorized for bump-fire, costing between $1,150 to $1,950. But these guns use magazines, not belts, and thus have limited ammo capacity.

A spokeswoman for Wal-Mart (WMT), one of the largest gun sellers in America, said the company does not sell Slide Fire products, and will not be offering the belt-fed rifle.

Another major dealer, Cabela's (CAB), did not return messages from CNNMoney about Slide Fire. But the company's website listed Slide Fire products for sale.

James Hill, owner of the Abilene Indoor Gun Range, located about 50 miles away from Slide Fire's headquarters, said he sells the company's bump-fire accessories and they're quite popular with his customers.

But Hill, who referred to the Slide Fire products as "a poor man's machine gun," doesn't plan to sell the belt-fed gun, because he doesn't believe there will be much of a demand for it.

He said the Slide Fire rifle is a bit more challenging to fire than a fully automatic weapon, but the "learning curve" can be corrected with a bit of practice.

"It's not as easy [as full auto], but it's fairly idiot proof," he said.
#17462
Brandon Renner, sales and marketing manager for Slide Fire, says the belt-fed rifle, called the SFS BFR, will be available this fall and sell for $6,000.

"It sprays like a fire hose," said Renner. "We recommend no more than 30 rounds on the belt, but one person could make it as big as they want."

Can that be legal?

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives says yes, since it's still technically a semiautomatic.

The key is that of the pieces that make up a gun, the ATF regulates only the "receiver." It's the only piece that has a serial number and the only one that requires a background check to purchase. Slide Fire modifies the trigger and the stock -- the butt of the gun that sits against the shooter's shoulder.

Slide Fire's technology uses the recoil of the rifle shot to "bump" the gun, speeding up the rate of fire without changing the gun's classification as a semiautomatic, which requires that only one round is fired each time the trigger is pulled.

In a 2010 letter posted on Slide Fire's website, the ATF wrote: "We find that the 'bump-stock' is a firearm part and is not regulated as firearm under the Gun Control Act or the National Firearms act."

"I can confirm that ATF did approve the device referenced in the letter and that the Slide Fire is legal," said ATF spokesman Christopher Amon.

CNNMoney.com - New rifle mimics machine gun

NEW YORK -- Machine guns are illegal in the U.S. for most people, but one small company has found a way around that.

Slide Fire, based in Moran, Texas, plans to sell a semiautomatic rifle that mimics the rapid fire of a machine gun and is also fed bullets from a belt, which provides a huge capacity for ammunition -- potentially thousands of rounds.

Philippine Business News / Re: A RAT's Tail
September 13, 2013, 10:34:52 AM

In this photograph, a rat walks along a poster tube suspended between two chairs. He holds his tail out to one side, increasing his rotational inertia around the axis of the tube. This gives him more time to make the tiny muscular adjustments he needs to keep his center of gravity directly above the tube.
#17468
Philippine Business News / Re: A RAT's Tail
September 13, 2013, 10:32:46 AM

The tail can also help change the center of gravity of the rat, though this change will remain small because the tail weighs so little. In this photograph, the rat is holding on to the rope with his hind legs, and his forequarters and tail are hanging below and to either side of the rope. The rat's center of gravity is low and close to the rope. A low center of gravity makes balancing easier, because a larger rotation is required to tip the rat over.
#17469
Philippine Business News / Re: A RAT's Tail
September 13, 2013, 10:31:45 AM
Balance

Rats use their tails for balance. They climb ropes and anchor chains, they walk along fences and telephone wires and branches, and their tails help them balance.

The rat's tail follows the same principle as the pole of the circus performer on a high-wire. Look at the rat balanced on the rope at right. Think of the rope as an axis, and the rat as able to rotate around that rope. The rat's center of gravity must stay directly above the rope -- if it moves to one side, gravity will cause him to start rotating around the rope. If he does not correct this rotation, he falls. The rat's tail increases the rotational inertia of the rat, making it harder for him to rotate around the rope (specifically, it increases his resistance to change in rotational velocity). This rotational inertia gives him more time to adjust his center of gravity back to the desired position. If the rat's tail were magically removed, his rotational inertia would dissappear, his body would easily rotate around the rope and he would fall off or hang upside down by his feet.

Cross section of the base of a rat's tail at two different body temperatures (37º and 40º C). At 40º C, the diameter of the blood vessels (especially the veins) is larger than at 37º C. This larger diameter permits more blood to flow through the tail: 15% more blood flows through the arteries and 125% more flows through the veins at 40º C than at 37º C. Adapted from Vanhoutte et al. 2002.

Philippine Business News / Re: A RAT's Tail
September 13, 2013, 10:29:41 AM
What are the functions of the rat's tail?

Thermoregulation

The rat's tail has a thermoregulatory function: it serves as a heat-loss organ. The tail is well suited for this purpose, because it has no fur, has a large surface to volume ratio, and is perfused with many blood vessels, especially at the tail tip and midlength (Yulong et al. 1995). The rat's tail comprises only 5% of the rat's surface area, but it can dissipate about 17% of the rat's body heat (Monson and Oyama 1984).

Rats control their body temperature through their tails by dilating or constricting their tail blood vessels. When the rat's body temperature rises by a few degrees, the tail vessels (especially the veins) swell -- called vasodilation -- permitting lots of warm blood to flow through the tail (Vanhoutte et al. 2002). The warm blood loses heat through the surface of the tail and returns to the body at a lower temperature, thus cooling the rat. The warmer the rat, the more blood flows through the tail, and the more heat is lost (Thompson and Stevenson 1965, Little and Stoner 1968, Rand et al. 1965, Raman et al. 1987).

Well, that might not be a completely out-of-the-way hypothesis. But the real reason why there are so few of them is because of overfishing.

The blobfish lives about 800 meters, or almost 3,000 feet, under the water’s surface â€" the same environment shared by edible critters like crabs and lobsters. (Via The Telegraph)

So most of the time when they are caught, it’s by accident during deep-sea trolling as they’re dragged up with other catches. (Via MonsterFishWorld)

Now, blobfish might be the most appropriate name for this critter, but what exactly is a blob?

Uh, no. It won’t eat you, just as much as you probably don’t want to eat it. Channel 4 News has the real breakdown.

“It looks so jelly actually because it’s their flesh. It just means they’re slightly more buoyant than water, so they don’t have to use their muscles very much, they can stay hovering there and just wait for food to come to them.” (Via Channel 4)

795 votes of the more than 3,000 cast were for the blobfish. So congrats, Mr. Blob, now that we all know what you are.

This even made my stomach turn, and I get to cover some pretty gross stories. I mean, look at that mini blob or whatever that is dripping from its grim frown. (Via The Guardian)

“The blobfish has won the award to be the mascot for the Ugly Animal Preservation Society.” (Via Ugly Animal Preservation Society)

The British society is dedicated to “raising the profile of some of Mother Nature’s more aesthetically challenged children.” (Via Ugly Animal Preservation Society)

Biologist and TV presenter Simon Watt presented the award and told the BBC: “Our traditional approach to conservation is egotistical. We only protect the animals that we relate to because they’re cute.”

He means it, though he has a little fun with it: “Conservation is littered with broken promises. Like all animals are equal. Tell that to the hundreds of animals now tragically extinct because they were just painfully ugly.” (Via YouTube / NSEC UK)

However unsurprising, the blob’s competitors in the competition really couldn’t hold a candle to it.

Some of them included pubic lice â€" you know, the kind that live in hair, more icky than ugly, the horseshoe bat, which is actually sort of cute, and the proboscis monkey, or the long-nosed monkey. (Via The Huffington Post)

But back to the champ.

“It’s an inhabitant of the deep waters off of the coast of Australia, and it’s in danger of extinction.”

“Because nobody will mate with it.” (Via WJXT)

The 52 remaining participants went on to compete in the final round called ‘Last Hero Standing,’ where they were made to stand on a wooden platform and had to carry metal plates or perform physical exercises. One by one, the contestants stepped down until it was just Mario and Evan there.

“I was about to cry. My tears were something that’s divine,” Mario Mendoza Jr. says. “Lord thank you. I’m so thankful during that time dahil hindi niya ako pinabayaan and from the start sinabi ko na sa kanya, Lord I am not perfect physically. I am not the strongest here. With you, you have the reason why I am here and please Lord show me and guide me through the way.”

Evan Rey Datun on the other hand shows intense focus on the last challenge. “To be honest the only thing that comes to mind is never miss an opportunity. Believe in yourself. Believe that God will give this to you,” he says.

However, the journey is far from over for Mario and Evan. They will now be sent to the International AXE Apollo Space Camp in America where only one of them will get a seat at the launch vehicle to space.

AXE Philippines Brand Manager Gem Laforteza says that they will undergo three to four days of astronaut training, flight and G-force simulation. Laforteza advises Mario and Evan to be the best version of themselves once they are in the space camp. “I’m very happy. I think it will be interesting to find out who will eventually go to space given their backgrounds,” he says.

Astronaut wannabes still have a chance as AXE announces a ‘wild card’ candidate that will be selected through an electronic raffle. Details are available at www.AxeApollo.com.

Two Filipinos have been chosen to go to space camp in a bid to become the country's first astronaut.

Evan Rey Datun, a 24-year-old former hotelier, and Mario Mendoza Jr., a 31-year-old Air Force pilot from the military, have been named the winners in the recently concluded AXE Apollo National Challenge held in Bonifacio Global City last August 31.

AXE initially received over 28,000 applicants from the Philippines, a list trimmed down to 400 of the best contestants who faced physical challenges. At the event, participants went through an obstacle course to test their fitness and the hundreds were narrowed down to 52.

Kristen Stewart

Kristen Stewart was paid $500,000 to spend just 15 minutes with a middle-eastern prince.

The unknown royal was eager to meet the 23-year-old, and was willing to pay whatever price she demanded.

The deal was brokered by Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein, reports Page Six. The money from the 15 minute meet and greet will go to the Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund.

According to Harvey, when he asked Kristen if she would be willing to go through with it her response was, “How much?” He then admiringly joked, “My kind of girl.”

The 61-year-old co-founder of Miramax Films says Kristen met the prince at Madison Square Garden last December.

The meet-and-greet went off without a hitch and the unidentified man paid the money in cash.

Harvey told the story at the Toronto Film Festival, where he’s promoting 12.12.12, a documentary about the Hurricane Sandy benefit concert.

Kristen was one of many celebrities who took part in the fundraiser in December. She gave a heartfelt speech about the hurricane which caused massive damage to the New York and New Jersey coastlines.

"I am here to talk to you about New Jersey tonight," she said, before reading out a list of statistics about the disaster.

"Now is your chance to be Jersey strong with us," Kristen added.

Other high profile people who took part in the benefit included Bruce Springsteen, Adam Sandler, Susan Sarandon, Chris Rock, the Rolling Stones and Kanye West. © Cover Media

On Saturday, Zocca and about 100 well-wishers delivered the Renault4 â€" after a tune-up to an engine that made 34 hp on a good day â€" to Pope Francis, who took the keys and climbed behind the wheel, telling Zocca he had driven the same model while living in Argentina and "it had never let him down.” Other media reports relay that one Swiss Guard was slightly concerned about becoming a traffic cop, saying “Now we are going to be a little worried because we’ll have to watch what Pope Francis does with that Renault4.” But maybe it's not so surprising that a pope should be an old car aficionado; as anyone who owns a vehicle sporting a couple of decades and a few hundred thousand miles can attest, they're not for people lacking in faith.
#17492
According to the Catholic News Agency and others, the car above, a 1984 Renault4, was donated to the pope by Italian pastor Renzo Zocca. Zocca had written Pope Francis earlier this year, offering to donate the car which Zocca had used for decades while working in impoverished neighborhoods of Verona, as a symbol of their shared concern for fighting poverty. A month ago, Francis called Zocca and asked why he didn't just donate the car to someone else who needed it. “I answered that this car had already given much to the poor and now it had to go to the pope," Zocca said.

Pope Francis has already made headlines for choosing a five-year-old Ford Focus as his preferred papal transportation, part of a public emphasis on thrift and poverty. But last weekend, the pontiff expanded his garage with the addition of a 29-year-old sedan with 186,000 miles as his personal car. It's too bad Click and Clack retired before they could take a call from Vatican City.

But how can anyone truly trust this Senator?

When news first broke out that he had been in collusion with Janet Napoles over the illegal disbursement of government funds for questionable NGOs (Non-governmental Organizations), his first claim was that he did not know Janet Napoles … yet here he is seen partying with her.

So it’s really disgusting that in such blatant face of the truth, the Senator thinks that he’s still a movie actor that he could lie through it.

What a shame.

Which is quite hilarious, really, especially when the Commission on Audit called on his bluff.

The gall to continuously lie in the face of Truth.

To add serious insult to an infected wound, Sen Bong Revilla’s questions the very signature he signed on the release of Pork Barrel fund to questionable NGOs headed by fugitive Janet Napoles as reported by Commission on Audit.

According to Interaksyon â€"

Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. is willing to subject himself to an impartial investigation on the pork-barrel scandal, but first wants a hand-writing expert to verify his signatures in the confirmation letters.

In a statement issued Wednesday, Revilla, through his lawyer Joel Bodegon, said that his office engaged the services of a hand writing expert to examine his supposed signatures in light of the admission of the whistle blowers, led by Benhur Luy, that as part of their supposed modus operandi under alleged pork barrel scam brains Janet Lim Napoles, they were routinely ordered to falsify documents covering the availment of the legislators’ Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF).

“A full and complete examination by handwriting experts should resolve the question of authenticity of the signatures,” he said.
