10 Rules for ...Ecological Sex - Save the planet ... through sex!
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Do you want to save the planet? Do you want to lead a healthy life in a healthy environment? In this case, you must know that the way you have sex can ruin all these things. The answer: ecological sex!

1. Lights off! If all sex magazines tell you to do this, ecological sex rules recommend you to do quite the opposite. By decreasing the energy bill, you will also ‘work’ against global warming. Get rid of inhibitions by having sex in the full light of day!

2. Take showers together. This way you will spare a lot of water, and ...if things get hot, ‘continue’ in bedroom: don't waste the water. Over one billion people worldwide do not have access to drinkable water.

3. Use organic fertilizers. A Durex study found that 22% of the Americans have sex in the garden. But would you roll naked in a grass abundantly splashed with skin irritating toxins (read pesticides and fertilizers)?

The answer: natural fertilizers ... (you know what this mean...).

4. Avoid sex toys! Almost 50 % of the Americans have used a vibrator, but how many know that plastics abounds in Bisphenol A, a chemical causing reproductive disorders in women (uterine damage and cancer) as it imitates estradiol, a female sex hormone?

Phthalates are employed to soften plastics to give them a soft touch, but these too have hormonal activity and damage the liver, the kidneys, the lungs, and the testes. You better use toys made of glass, metal, silicon, and rubber.

5. Choose quality over anything else. No matter if it's about lingerie or some toy, cheap things last less. Quality items last longer and you will feel the difference compared to the sensations that cheaper products can offer.

6. No condoms! They are not biodegradable, thus throwing them (possibly in the bushes) means they will still be there after one year.

7. Choose natural aphrodisiacs! Don't contribute to making the polluting drug industry even more prosperous, use natural alternatives like celery, carrot, red hot chilly pepper, asparagus, ginseng, black pepper and avocado.

8. Become a vegetarian! Vegetables will help you feel as if you were a teenager again, and you should know that meat industry is one of the main water pollutants.

9. Your sex life can be improved by various genital exercises for both females and males, like Pilates, yoga and various oriental techniques that strengthen the muscles.

10. Keep moving! In the end, physical exercise is the best aphrodisiac. By improving blood circulation, the erectile function improves too. The endorphins released while exercising increase the libido.

Is a Woman's Beauty the Same Worldwide? - Cultural differences in cosmetics and perfumes
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Globalization may bring us together, but when it's about beauty, our culture, geography and even religion mark our cosmetic and aesthetic tastes.

Not all women are the same. There are important cultural differences which determine the beauty of their facial expression. Apart from its personality and fashion taste, each country imprints its own determinant characteristics when it’s about consumption and making use of creams, make-up or perfumes.

The great challenge of the American women is the body care, their big oversight. They practically do not make use of body treatments as compared with the European women. Their universe of treatment and make-up is marked by a world of appearances. They limit themselves almost exclusively to the most visible areas: face, hair, hands and especially the nails.

However, in Europe, women are more addicted to exfoliants, oils and body moisturizers. The use of anticellulitis products, breast creams and foot creams is a phenomenon which is common in all Europe. The business of body treatments is flourishing in Europe.

In Eastern Europe (from Romania to Poland and Russia), women are addicted to make-up. It is very important for them to display a perfect skin and make-up aroud their eyes. They won't go out even for throwing the garbage without using make-up.

Instead, the Japanese women are obsessed with having a porcelain-like skin and they treat their skin with an ample array of bleaching products daily. No doubt, their cosmetic care is the most deliberate and sophisticated in the world. Moreover, the oriental women are those who take care most of their diet.

And what about the perfumes? While in Spain the fresh scent of citrus fruits in cologne water is a matter of national pride, the Americans prefer cinnamon and apple scents. For the Americans, the lemon scent is associated with detergents and cleaning products.

In Japan, people do not practically use perfumes. It is considered something vulgar and too aggressive. At most, they can use an essence with a light woody scent, but always very subtle. They cannot stand the Western perfumes. Why? It's all about racial biology.

The Mongoloid race is the human group with the lowest number of sweating glands, spreading a weak body scent. Humans who are part of other races have a strong and unpleasant smell for them. In fact, this is the role of a perfume: covering the natural body scent with an attractive one. The Japanese seem to really not need it.

Lorenzo,

I am presently stationed in Saudi Arabia with my wife and 3 kids. Life is quite boring here, but one of the safest countries in the world. I have a brother in Long Beach California right now (John Ralph Ferniz) and he is also a batchmate of one of your uncle who studied in HSS.

Coming back to our topic, National Geographic's coverpage this month is about producing Ethanol out of corn. A greener fuel through agriculture. Your country, the USA is producing 1/4 of it's fuel requirements from corn. There was even an experiment to produce ethanol from cultured algae. Those technologies are simple and could be done in the Philippines to solve our energy problem.

HomeHero, The World's Sexiest Fire Extinguisher - A very interesting approach to this rather mundane concept
By: Alex Vochin, Technology Editor - Softpedia

The HomeHero Fire Extinguisher

Fire extinguishers have been around for quite a while now, but they're generally the exact opposite of sexy, at least from the design point of view. However, things might actually change, at least when the Home Hero hits the shelves, as this thing completely redefines the concept of fire extinguisher, as it comes in a very sleek and good-looking package.

As all of our readers probably know, fire extinguishers are large, cumbersome and difficult to use, requiring two hands to operate. HomeHero's greatest ergonomic feature is its simple, single-handed deployment. The accessible style and shape of the canister and the molded rubber grip and trigger on its handle allow the consumer to deploy the product in comfort and ease, even under the most challenging circumstances.

The device's clean design allows for prominent, unobstructed placement anywhere around the house, which leads to a decreasing of the emergency response time. Moreover, also in order to improve the response times, the device has been fitted with a highly visible safety pin, as well as with an ergonomic grip area for more intuitive and secure operation.

One of the most serious problems with normal fire extinguishers is that they tend to scratch the surface they're placed onto, not to mention the fact that they occupy quite a bit of space around the house. However, the Home Hero has an answer for these issues as well, since it sports rubber feet that protect the countertops and comes with an included bracket for wall mounting.

The HomeHero - front and top views

The device can be used on fires involving flammable liquids and/or electrical equipment and has an estimated functioning life of up to 12 years. The Home Hero Fire Extinguisher will be retailed exclusively via the Home Depot stores, but we'll have to wait some more until the manufacturer provides any significant pricing or availability information.

Internet Addiction Means Less Sex - In 20 % of us
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

It is clear that everything in our life has something to do with the Internet, from news and information to shopping and entertainment. But for many of us this seems to have turned into a pathological obsession, affecting our social and even sex life.

A survey aiming to assess the impact of technologies in people's behavior and made by the advertising agency JWT in September 2007 on 1,011 adult Americans revealed that 80 % cannot spend a week without going online and 35 % give this up in favor of friends and sex. 15 % experience anxiety after less than a day without net, 21 % in a couple of days and 19 % after a few days.

"People told us how anxious, isolated and bored they felt when they are forced off line," said Ann Mack, director of trend spotting at JWT.

"They felt disconnected from the world, from their friends and family," she told Reuters.

The results of the survey showed the increasing role of the mobile phones and the Internet in our life with 48 % of subjects stating that Internet access was something crucial in their life. 28 % of the subjects recognized they spent less time in face-to-face encounters with their friends because of the time intervals spent in front of the computer's monitor. 20 % admitted they allocated less time for sex because of the same reason.

Mobile phones and television lose ground when compared to the Internet if we take into consideration devices people couldn't miss. It is clear that people are increasingly tied up to the new technologies.

"It is taking away from off-line activities, among them having sex, socializing face-to-face, watching TV and reading newspapers and magazines. It cuts into that share. I don't suppose their partners are too pleased about it." said Mack.

"A clear trend to emerge from the survey was the increasing need for mobility with people no longer satisfied with just broadband access from home and wanting hand-held devices like iPhones and BlackBerrys. We are calling them 'digitivity denizens,' those who see their mobile phones as an extension of themselves, whose on-line and off-line lives are co-mingled and who would chose a Wi-Fi connection over TV any day. This is how they communicate, entertain and live," said Mack.

Skinny Women Have Low Sex Drive! - Besides being sterile!
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

Sex and skinny grace do not match. Women struggle to slim a lot and fast, because they imagine they are more attractive this way, some even starve themselves to death (see the case of Brazilian model Ana Carolina Reston, reported to have weighed 88 pounds (36 kg) when she died of anorexia). But a new research reveals size zero women, paradoxically, could experience severe loss of sex drive
(in the end, which mentally healthy man feels irresistibly attracted to a woman with no boobs, no a*s (the basic sexual stimulants in humans) at all?), which clearly shows the nonsense of all this.

"Extreme dieting can disturb the hormones and affect the sex drive - which could mean bad news for the men in their lives," warned expert Dr Sarah Brewer, an expert of relationship and sex from the Amora, the London's Academy of Sex and Relationships.

The never stopping pressure to be as thin as possible, especially in modeling or acting careers, severely damages a woman's life quality, affecting her libido (sex drive), self-esteem and fertility. "It is often celebrities who are trying the hardest to remain thin so it would be unsurprising if there are many who are affected by the problem of low sex drive. Women are also often trying to get thin so they are more attractive to the opposite sex. But this will lower their sex drive and defeat the point of trying to be thin in the first place." said Brewer.

Sterility, which comes with anorexia, is a biological defense of the organism (it is known that pregnant women experiencing prolonged hunger will abort spontaneously).

"As soon as body weight plummets below a critical point, the womb shrinks, menstruation stops and your level of sexual interest, fantasy and enjoyment fall. Some women can lose interest in sex all together. These are all part of the body's self defense mechanism to prevent a pregnancy when you are physically unable to cope with the increased demands of reproduction. The good news is that sex drive and the amount of time spent on sexual day-dreaming increase again, once normal weight is restored. The link between losing weight and sexuality needs to be understood. It may make women less inclined to become so thin.", explained Brewer.

Testicles Will Save the Brain - Testicular stem cells against Alzheimer's (senile dementia), Parkinson's, stroke, diabetes and certain cancers.
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor - Softpedia

The same factor that makes testicles produce millions of sperms daily can lead to their employment as a source of stem cells in treatments against severe conditions, like Alzheimer's (senile dementia), Parkinson's, stroke, diabetes and certain cancers.

A team at the Weill Cornell Medical College has managed to extract early-stage sperm cells from mice, which later developed into cells capable of forming various tissues. Still, some are not sure that too many men would be willing to undergo the painful
procedure of extracting the cells.

Stem cells are cells in the unspecialized stage, that can theoretically develop in any other type of cell. Of course, the human embryo is made almost only of stem cells, with the potential to develop into any tissue type, but ethical reasons impede the use of embryos for medical goals, that's why researchers are on the hunt for a replacing source of easily-harvested adult stem cells.

Stem cells had already been extracted from mouse testes, but the new study comes with a more reliable method of isolating and growing them. The advantage of the testicular cells over other types of adult stem cells is that they do not require genetic manipulation, behaving more like embryonic stem cells.

"It appears that these unique specialized spermatogonial (pre-sperm) cells could be an easily obtained and manipulated source of stem cells with exactly the same capability to form new tissues that we see in embryonic stem cells. For male patients, it could someday mean a readily available source of stem cells that gets around ethical issues linked to embryonic stem cells. It also avoids issues linked to tissue transplant rejection, since these 'autologous stem cells' are derived from the patient's own body.", said lead researcher Dr Shahin Rafii.

Future technology could implant large amounts of stem cells into diseased tissue, replacing it with the specialized newly grown cells they develop. "Several research teams around the world were looking into the potential of the testicle as a stem cell source. At present, there is an awful lot of interest in this from veterinary circles as a source of stem cells for animal use. I can see more problems getting humans to agree to have this done, as it would be a very painful procedure to have them extracted," warned Professor Colin McGuckin, a researcher in stem cell biology at the University of Newcastle.

9 Things You Did not Know about the Chinese and Mongoloid Race - Why is this the most successful human group?
By: Stefan Anitei, Science Editor

About 200,000 years ago, in Eastern Africa a Homo group started the evolution towards Homo sapiens, the modern human. About 100,000 years ago, modern humans entered South Asia and by 70,000 years ago they were present in southern China. 40,000 years ago, they entered Europe and this ancestral type was called "Cro-Magnon". About 55,000 humans from southern Asia entered Australia. But all these groups are not what we see today in China and Europe, but more related to the Australian Aborigines.

Almost 25,000 years ago, in Siberia the first humans appeared, and from here, a group that already started to evolve towards the typical Mongoloid race entered 14,000 years ago the North American prairies through Behringia. 13,000 years ago, these people reached central South America.

1. The Han Chinese form the largest ethnic group in the world, 14 % of the planet's population. Due to the cultivation of rice, the world's oldest crop, they could feed large populations, overcoming easily in number the surrounding hunter-gatherer groups. Today, the diet of over 2 billion people is based on rice.

2. Why was rice cultivation such an advantage? It allowed an earlier weaning of the children and this way women could get pregnant more rapidly (hormones that favor lactation impedes pregnancy). At the same time, for a nomad population of hunter-gatherers, having too many children at a time posed a problem and a sedentary group of farmers could not be confronted with such an issue.

Larger families meant more cultivated rice paddies and the process went on, causing a population boom. This also led to the decrease of the territory used by hunter-gatherers to achieve food. Farming societies could also support large armies and were immune to disease originated in and carried by domestic animals.

2. The Han Chinese appeared in the Tibet area (their language is related to the Tibetan) and by about 5,000 years ago started to displace other tribes from modern Eastern China, many speaking Hmong-Mien, Thai and Tibetan-related
languages. In fact, even today southern China is home to various minorities from these groups, and from a historical point of view, modern western and northern China was not Chinese at all.

3. 95 % of the members of the Mongoloid race have in the back side of their incisive teeth a small and easily visible groove. Its evolutionary role (if it has any) is not known.

4. The Mongoloid race is the human group with the lowest number of sweating glands. This trait is present in 97 % of them. That's why their body scent is very weak and humans of other races have a strong and unpleasant smell for them. It is known that for the Oriental people, the European perfumes are too strong. Many say that this means they also emit low levels of pheromones, which go out of the body through the armpit's sweating glands.

5. The Chinese and many people of south-eastern Asia have are not fond of milk and alcohol. The intolerance to milk is caused by the lack in the adult stage of the enzyme lactase that breaks down the sugar lactose from milk. When it reaches the thick intestine, bacterial decomposition of the lactose induces digestive issues.

This is due to the fact that cattle and sheep growth has been ignored along the millennia by the Chinese (perhaps because in the center of their civilization, southern/eastern China, pastures are scarce), and as far as evolution goes, individuals adapted to milk consumption were not selected. In Africa, Europe and western Asia, where milk entered the human diet from 10-5,000 years ago, the lactase is active in most adults.

6. Scientists say that gendrift ("sexual preference") is the cause of the evolution in the Mongoloid type of such peculiar traits like snubbed noses or almond eyes: when people in a culture see a trait as desirable, those who do not have it will have lower possibilities of mating and have less offspring.

7. The tendency to less developed genitalia seems to be sustained in this race. A meta-analysis made in May 2007 found the smallest average penis size, in a comparison amongst many areas worldwide, in Korea.

Biologically, this could mean a lower testosterone level in men, a weaker libido, compensated by a higher immune stability (testosterone decreases immunity) and a larger lifespan. In the end, the Japanese people have the highest life expectancy on the planet. The result seems to be this: the Mongoloid race is the most common in the planet.

8. Fossils of 500,000 years old Homo erectus, a human species that lived in Africa, Europe and Asia, were found in China. Some Chinese academics argue that the Mongoloid race would have evolved from Asian H. erectus, and are not a result of migrations of ancestral H. sapiens from Africa.

Their theories are heretic and they argue that because of the skull shape, an inflexion on the lower edge of the cheekbone, the tip of the flattened noses and the incisive teeth's groove. Geneticists disagree, DNA analyses show another story, of a common origin of all Homo sapiens from Africa.

The Chinese even find an explanation why the evolution did not produce two distinct species and why the DNA reveals another story: migrating humans out of Africa produced a continuous inter-change.

9. About 8,000 years ago, all southeastern Asia (Indochina, Indonesia and Philippines) was populated by Black people very similar to Papuans of New Guinea and many tribes of southern India. This distinct race of Black Asians was replaced by the Austronesian (Malayo-Polynesian) migration of Mongoloid people that started from Taiwan. From Taiwan they entered to Philippines, than Indonesia, Indochina and all the islands of the Pacific.

The darker skin of the Mongoloid race in southeastern Asia is rather not the result of a natural selection but of the mix with the Asian Blacks (like is clearly visible in people of Indonesia or Thailand).

The Lord is Kind to them---after 2000 years after being scattered from Judea by the Romans, the LORD provided them with a home in Israel.

The fact that the Jews survived and rebounded after over 12 million of them were killed by Hitler----is a sign of that relationship.

Who Would Have Thought An iPod Would Save Lives? - Well, not save them literally, but helping a lot in the process
By: Anca Rusu, Technology Editor - Softpedia

Who thought that the famous iPod will serve for something else besides listening to music, watching movies or reading books?

Well, it seems that the iPod can also save lives in its unique way… You can listen to your favorite tracks while someone else is trying to save you.

Two Tasmanian miners - Brant Webb, 37, and Todd Russell, 34 â€" were given two iPods and a camcorder after being trapped in a tunnel. It seems that several stones tumbled down and closed their way out of the mine.

The rescuers drilled through 12m of rock in order to reach the two men. However, the first thing they did was to place an access pipe which served for delivering food, water, nutritional drinks, vitamins, dry clothes, space blankets, glow sticks, magazines and… two iPods and a camcorder.

"They remain in good health and have now received iPods so they can listen to their favorite music," Beaconsfield Gold Mine manager Matthew Gill said.

After being trapped in the mine for several days, the two Tasmanians are now safe and sound in their homes … maybe listening to music coming from their beloved iPods.

Technology / How to Tell If Your PSU Is Crashing Down?

How to Tell If Your PSU Is Crashing Down? - It's often better to replace an old PSU while it still works
By: Alexandru Pancescu, Hardware Editor - Softpedia

A cheap PSU

One of the most important components in a computer system and at the same time one of the least respected (probably because of the huge number of very cheap and poorly made Chinese computer cases that come bundled with PSUs) is the power source unit, also known as the PSU. Many problems may arise if a poor quality or an old PSU decides to take a vacation or simply work at reduced efficiency. There are a number of symptoms that detected early can spare the average computer user a lot of grief and lost time and data. For one thing a failing PSU may leak an overvoltage spike that could fry just about every electronic component inside your PC.

Unusual noises coming from inside the PSU can mean a number of things: this could be dirty (that's the happy scenario) or it could be crawling through its last remaining days, hours or minutes (the unhappy scenario). If the PSU is actually dirty, this can be easily fixed with a can of compressed air. Just blow out all the dust from the PSU and try to see if there are any improvements.

As most computer parts are very picky about their desired voltage and amperage, a normal PSU must be able to deliver to each component exactly the needed power, too much or too less could permanently damage the hardware. While there are a number of Windows or Linux based programs that can help you with the power monitoring tasks, it is usually much better to simply read the power values directly from the system's BIOS, as there are less chances of misreadings.

Some symptoms of an old or terribly dirty power supply unit are that the cooling fan or fans are filled with dust, they are very noisy and are functioning at a reduced speed. If this came with your PSU's cooling fan, then you can either clean or replace the damaged fan, or if the entire PSU is old, a trip to your favorite hardware supplier may be in order.

The Hard Disk Drive and The Urban Legends - Long enduring hard disk drive myths
By: Alexandru Pancescu, Hardware Editor - Softpedia

A hard disk drive

There are a lot, and I really mean a LOT, of myths concerning hardware components, but nothing has attracted more guesses and myths turned into popular knowledge also known as "urban legends" than the hard disk drive did. I mean, how many "did you know..." have you ever heard about USBs? While some of these urban legends are based on at least some grain of truth, there are others that are simply taken from a really bad Sci-Fi novel. Let's see three of the most popular urban legends concerning hard disk drives.

"Formatting a drive is a sure way to kill it." Wrong, so totally wrong. Formatting a drive, or just a portion of it simply means that all data in those areas is erased and a new filesystem of user's choosing is neatly laid out. Because during the formatting process the hard drive doesn't do anything out of the ordinary (it just writes and reads data, just like it usually does), simply formatting a disk will never be the cause of a hardware failure.

"Defragmenting the hard drive will stress the head actuator." This one has a tiny grain of truth in it, even misplaced as it is. Defragmenting a hard drive may involve a lot of seeking as the drive layout is rearranged. However, this is no more and no less stressful to the hard drive's components as a normal, day-to-day operation. While head actuators will work a lot during the defragmentation process, once this is complete the seek time will be much reduced, so the actuators' workload will decrease.

"Power cuts and cheap PSUs slowly kill your hard drive." Power cuts, and we are not talking power cuts followed by an overvoltage spike, cannot damage a hard drive because, as the power fails, the read/write heads are automatically positioned in the parking area, so they will not come crashing on the data surface. A poorly made, cheap PSU doesn't kill your hardware. It can cause general instability and if you are truly unlucky, it may send an overvoltage spike that will instantly fry the logic board of the hard drive or burn the motor. So in either case, it is not slowly, it is so fast you'll never know what hit you.
