Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious

This 34-letter word, which was coined by song-writers Richard and Robert Sherman in the musical film Mary Poppins, is completely made-up, the sum of word parts that don’t even follow proper prefix/suffix placement protocol; the “-istic” following “fragil-” is a suffix, which should signify a word’s end.  However, it is followed by the prefix “ex-,” where a new, separate word should begin.  Nonetheless, it is just another example of a phrase being irretrievably carried off by and imbedded within the culture into which it was born.  Just as how words are invented all the time in rap culture, and swallowed up by a constantly-evolving (or devolving) language system.

The word, containing definable roots, means something like “Atoning for educability through delicate beauty.”  Miss Poppins, however, would insist the word means “something to say when you have nothing to say.”

Pseudopseudohypoparathyroidism

This 30-letter word is a technical one for a type of inherited disorder.  An individual with such a disorder resembles someone with Pseudohypoparathyroidism Type 1A, but doesn’t possess a deficiency in calcium or PTH levels (which mark the essential differences between Pseudohypoparathyroidism 1A and Hypoparathyroidism).

To put it far more basically, the word is much more fun to say than to have.

Additional note: tying for the #7 spot is the word “hippopotomonstrosesquipedalian.”  It also contains 30 letters.  Let its omission be justified by saying this list, in and of itself, is hippopotomonstrosesquipedalian (i.e. “that which pertains to extremely long words”).

Floccinaucinihilipilification

This 29-letter word, pieced together from Latin stems, means simply “the deeming of something to be trivial.”  One letter more than antidisestablishmentarianism, and just as big of a mouthful, it is a valid dictionary entry with a usefulness that is much greater than anything it might be placed beside contextually.  Some readers might even be able to maintain a floccinaucinihilipilification for this list.

9.
Antidisestablishmentarianism

Containing 28-letters, antidisestablishmentarianism is the longest proper word, consisting of proper and compatible root and affix attachments.  After all the Lego blocks have been snapped together, the word comes to mean “the movement or ideology that opposes disestablishment (i.e. the separation of church and state, as in the movement that took place in 1860’s England).”  The word has a dated relevance, or else is the greatest living thing in a world history nerd’s vocabulary.

Honorificabilitudinitatibus

This 27-letter word coined by Shakespeare, in his comedy Love’s Labour’s Lost, is a testament to the Bard’s own intralexiconic skills. Meaning “the state of being able to achieve honors,” the word is the longest one in the English language with alternating consonants and vowels (Take a look for yourself….yep.).

Top 10 Longest Words in the English Language

Sometimes a picture says a thousand words; sometimes a word says a thousand letters.  There are a few instances in the English language where a word is not constructed for the sake of communication so much as to break a world record, for spectacle’s sake.  In that way, the English language is much like the Olympics; here are ten words that really go the distance.

Note: the following are words in the non-strictest sense, being that some are technical terms, some have been coined, while others actually appear in the dictionary.  Depending on which school of thought you subscribe to, lists may very on the basis of “what constitutes a word” (and some may argue simply that letters constitute a word).

let's repeat that.  an enabling law for what is enshrined in our constitution against political dynasties had languished since the 1987 constitution was instituted.  an attempt to pass a law had been made ages ago, and nothing was heard from it again.

the possible reasons why the anti-dynasty bill may not even be scheduled in the plenary:

Speaker Sonny Belmonte
uncle to QC Rep. Kit Belmonte
daughter, Joy, is Quezon City vice mayor

Deputy Majority Leader Abigail Binay
daughter of Vice President Jejomar Binay
sister to Senator Nancy Binay
(sister to Makati City Mayor Jejomar Erwin Binay)

Rep. Mark Villar
son to Senator Cynthia Villar

Rep. Lino Cayetano
brother to Senators Pia and Alan Peter Cayetano
(brother-in-law to Taguig City mayor Lani Cayetano, wife of Senator Alan Peter Cayetano)

Malabon Rep. Josephine Lacson Noel
sister-in-law to An Waray Rep. Victoria Noel

Rep. Imelda Marcos
mother to Senator Bongbong Marcos
(mother to Ilocos Norte Governor Imee Marcos)

Rep. Lani Mercado Revilla
wife to Senator Bong Revilla

Rep. Sherwin Gatchalian
brother to Rep. Wesley Gatchalian
(brother to Valenzuela Mayor Rex Gatchalian)

Rep. Gloria Arroyo
mother to Rep. Dato Arroyo

Rep. Sitti Hataman
(wife of ARMM Governor Jim Hataman)

Rep. Abdullah Dimaporo
husband of Rep. Imelda Dimaporo

will these people vote for a law that will disallow them from holding elective positions together, all in the family?  your guess is as good as mine. ;D

The bill is expected to be endorsed to the plenary.

Despite all these, it’s a guessing game if this will even be included in the agenda of the plenary, considering some lawmakers are involved in political dynasties.

Speaker Sonny Belmonte's daughter, Joy, is Quezon City vice mayor. He is also an uncle to QC Rep. Kit Belmonte.

Colmenares, who is also one of the authors said: "Today’s a historic moment, if only because for the first time, pumasa sa kumite.”

ACT TEACHERS Party List Rep. Antonio Tinio said, "the next step is for [the lower House] to schedule plenary debates. I call on the public and I hope that the same forces that are for the abolition of the pork barrel system will also be mobilized for this struggle. Alam natin magkaugnay ang issue ng pork barrel at dynasties.”

Bayan Muna Rep. Neri Colmenares also inserted a provision that empowers the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to resolve through a raffle which one in the same family will be allowed to run in the same election in case none of the candidates in the same family withdraw or give way to just one family member.

Minority Leader Ronaldo Zamora said "the important thing is a lot of reforms have to be set in place and it shouldn’t just be in the budget. It should also include political dynasties. Let’s take a look again. We have been remiss in our obligation to implement [this]. Let’s see what they will do at the committee of suffrage. I hope we get the leadership to agree to looking at pol dynasties in a much more aggressive light.”

House makes history: Committee OKs bill vs dynasties

by RG Cruz, ABS-CBN News
11/20/2013

MANILA - For the first time ever, the House Committee on Suffrage has approved a consolidated bill banning political dynasties in the Philippines.

The bill essentially bans from running in the same election the spouses or persons related to an incumbent up to the second degree of consanguinity or affinity. It also bans the possible overlap of relatives' terms in office.

“But I did not instruct my friend to put my name on it,” Binay, who was here Wednesday to inaugurate a housing project by the Surigao del Norte provincial government, told reporters.

“I had no control over the labeling but when I was informed about this, I had them removed.”

duh.  and we're supposed to believe this?

what a businessman.  he just can't donate in his own name.  it had to be the vice-president's name.  would that binay names this magnanimous and publicity-shy businessman and thank him publicly so that the beneficiaries will know that those good didn't come from the vice-president.
#16419
From armed conflict to disasters, Binay has drawn flak for inserting himself and appearing to be swinging on an early campaign mode.

Just last month, netizens blasted Binay for electioneering after photos of his custom-labeled relief goods for Bohol earthquake victims went viral.

He also faced accusations of politicking after he caused public confusion following his announcement that a truce had been reached between government forces and forces loyal to Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) founding chair Nur Misuari.

That announcement turned out to be false and Binay was chided for his unauthorized attempt to discuss a truce with the rebels.

‘EPAL’ BACKLASH:

Binay says he didn’t want his name on relief goods, blames supporter

SURIGAO CITY, Philippines â€" Vice President Jejomar Binay is seeing a conspiracy behind the negative posts on social media deriding him as an “epal,” or one who is constantly trying to draw attention to himself.

Vice President Binay has been on the receiving end of social media backlash after photos of relief goods labeled with his name and plastered with the Vice President’s logo became viral. The relief goods are intended for victims of typhoon Yolanda (international name: Haiyan).

the initial rumors of rape and pillage also happened in the aftermath of haiti's disaster.  in yolanda's case, those rape and pillage stories vanished as the days went by.  one couldn't tell whether those were true or not.  katrina in the u.s. also did not spare george bush from heaps of blame.  i guess it helps that someone in authority gets blamed.  fortunately, there isn't any item, written or said, that blames god.

There are famous Internet animals, and then there is Grumpy Cat. The one-year-old feline, whose perpetually frowning face turned her into a massive online sensation over the past year, officially became a one-cat empire when she graced the cover of New York magazine’s “Boom Brands” issue in October. The world learned that the estimated value of the Grumpy Cat brand â€" which includes a coffee line, a New York Times-bestselling book and even a movie deal â€" is worth an estimated $1 million. The lesson from all this, according to New York magazine? Invest in cats.

Chris P. Bacon, the Piglet

The piglet known as Chris P. Bacon had all the raw materials to become a viral star: an adorable little face, a cute, vaguely ironic name, and a touching tale of overcoming adversity. He was born without the use of his hind legs and began learning to walk with the help of a pint-sized wheelchair made from toy parts. His original owner has intended to put him down, but Florida-based veterinarian Len Lucero decided to adopt him â€" and help him become mobile. Lucero posted a video of the piglet using his tiny wheelchair to YouTube, where it racked up more than 1.5 million views. And with that, a porcine star was born.

Gowanus Dolphin

New Yorkers were reminded of their frequently-ignored connection to the natural world when a dolphin arrived in Brooklyn’s Gowanus Canal in January. The aging dolphin died in the dirty waterway causing many to worry that the Gowanus led to its end (a necropsy revealed the dolphin was gravely ill before it swam into Brooklyn’s waters). By swimming to its death in the media capital of the world, the dolphin secured the sort of fleeting fame that perhaps only animals can earn in the age of Instagram. The dolphin wasn’t the first large creature to meet its end in the Gowanus. In 2007, a Minke whale made it to the water before dying two days later. He was nicknamed Sludgie.

A pit bull in Tennessee ended up at an overcrowded kill-shelter because his owner, after seeing the dog mount another male pooch, thought he was gay. The story made its way to Facebook, spreading the word that the pit bull would be put down if no one adopted him immediately. The post was shared more than 5,000 times, and soon enough, local veterinary technician Stephanie Fryns came forward and agreed to adopt him. Just hours before he was scheduled to be euthanized, the “gay” shelter dog â€" who Fryns renamed Elton â€" found a new home.

Washington Zoo Pandas

Smithsonian's National Zoo / AP

When U.S. lawmakers couldn’t agree on raising the debt ceiling, the government shut down for two weeks. Naturally, this had some pretty drastic effects, most glaringly, the National Zoo pulling the plug on its beloved panda cam. When the live feed, which broadcasts the daily lives of two giant pandas, went dark, the Internet did not respond well. At all. The only positive outcome of this lack of round-the-clock pandas was that other animal cams got their turn to shine. But of course, after the two-week deprivation, the Internet breathed a collective sigh of relief when the zoo shared a very important message on Twitter: “The panda cam is back ON!”

(See: trillions of terrifying red-eyed bloodthirsty monsters will emerge from all possible crevices to ruin your life). The invasion, which comes once every 17 years, did happen in some areas, sure, but in the end it was all very underwhelming. NBC Philadelphia dubbed it “The Cicada Invasion That Wasn’t” and New York magazine simply declared that in the Big Apple, the invasion had been canceled.

Therapy Dogs in Boston and Newtown

Following April’s Boston Marathon bombings, a pack of five golden retrievers arrived in Boston to offer comfort to the community. The pups, part of the nonprofit K-9 Comfort Dogs, were all specially trained in providing emotional support. They were stationed at a church a few blocks from the marathon finish line, and also sent to area hospitals to visit victims. These comforting canines had also spent time in Newtown, Connecticut, offering support to the community following the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. “They bring a calming effect to people,” Tim Hetzner, president of Lutheran Church Charities, told TODAY, “and help them process the various emotions that they go through in times like this.”

Bowser the Rescued Tornado Dog

http://www.cbsnews.com/

Following the massive tornado that slammed Oklahoma in May, a touching story â€" captured on live TV â€" provided a bit of hope. During an on-air interview with CBS News, Moore resident Barbara Garcia described the unthinkable devastation that had just whipped through her town. Her home was decimated, and her dog was trapped somewhere beneath the wreckage. But soon, someone off-camera noticed something moving nearby. Garcia looked closer and realized it was her dog, Bowser, buried alive beneath the rubble. Garcia and the news crew managed to lift the debris and rescue the pup. She later told CBS News, “All of the other things … you know, one by one they can be replaced. A lot of it wasn’t even important, but I couldn’t replace him.”

The First Family got a bit cuter when a new dog settled into the White House in August. President Obama officially introduced the one-year-old pup, Sunny, on Twitter, and naturally, the Internet rejoiced. She joined fellow Portuguese water dog Bo, who until then had been the Obamas’ only pooch. In his 2012 victory speech, President Obama had said, “for now one dog’s probably enough.” But clearly, by 2013 he’d changed his mind (perhaps at the urging of his daughters Sasha and Malia). Nothing says influence like a free pass to wander the West Wing.

"It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt."

Apparently not Johnson, using the Primary Source Media CD-ROM as the judge. Nowhere in Johnson's works or letters, or contemporary biographies of him, do the phrases "remain silent" or "remove all doubt" appear in anything close to this context. In fact, the words "silent" and "fool" never appear together in a sentence.

In addition to Johnson, many other people are supposed to have said this. Sometimes people cite Abraham Lincoln; or a journalist named Silvan Engel or sometimes it's attributed to "Lincoln, quoting Silvan Engel." It also gets attributed to Mark Twain, Oscar Wilde, and Woodrow Wilson. (You can read more in this discussion in alt.quotations, as well as this explanation at "Ask Yahoo!")

This was a tougher nut to crack than we originally thought. Not only could we not find a definite answer to your question, we couldn't even confirm the exact wording of the quote.

Searches on "better to keep your mouth closed" and "better to remain silent" (using the quotation marks in both cases) turned up numerous web pages, all offering different versions of the phrase. Some sources quoted the saying as "It's far better...", some substituted the words "stupid," "ignorant," or "simpleton" for the word "fool," and still others twisted the saying into an almost unrecognizable form.

A page titled Mark Twain and the Mutating Quote attributed at least four variations of the same phrase to the eminently quotable Twain, explaining that it was a case of "split personality" that accounted for the variations, rather than a rash of misquotes.

Other pages suggested a number of other authors for the saying, including: Abraham Lincoln, George Eliot, Groucho Marx, Albert Einstein, and a mysterious figure named Silvan Engel.

In an attempt to solve this proverbial puzzle, we paid a visit to Bartleby.com, home to the online version of Familiar Quotations. Unfortunately, after searching on a number of possible keywords and potential authors, we couldn't find a single reference to this quote.

All the confusion and disagreement surrounding both the author and the wording of this saying led us to suspect that it may be a simple maxim, not attributable to any single person -- which is not to question its wisdom.

I’ve had the following quote on my blog for a while:

It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt â€" Abraham Lincoln

It was pointed out to me that the attribution of that quote should have been to Mark Twain, not Abraham Lincoln. I started wondering if that could be true. I certainly did not want to propagate a misquote. Even after doing some searching on the web, I still was not able to determine the answer to my satisfaction. Bartleby, where I usually go to check quotes, did not have the quote at all. A number of sites attribute the quote to Lincoln, and just as many attribute the quote to Mark Twain. Still other sites attribute to someone else altogether. I was not able to find any reliable citations on any site. Even Ask Yahoo came up empty.

The quote is clearly derived from a much earlier quote found in Proverbs 17:28 in the Míshlê Shlomoh in the Tanakh.

my favorite entries on who 'owns' this quote:

1

This is a very old maxim or adage, and it is not possible to attribute it to any one individual.

Although some credit this quote to Abraham Lincoln, others to Mark Twain, and others to Samuel Johnson (apocryphally) , it evidently is much, much older than all of these, and they are probably paraphrasing from Scriptures, or repeating an old adage.

after all, the attribution of this quote is not limited to either Abraham Lincoln and Mark Twain only.  also credited or quoted with this line are a diverse lot like Oscar Wilde, Woodrow Wilson, George Eliot, Groucho Marx, Albert Einstein, and journalist Silvan Engel.  whew!

online information is truly a heap, one needs to pick through all that trash or gold mine of information, opinion, news, and whatever else.  interestingly, for just the attribution of this one quote, there are mountains of such heap.

hubag bohol's personal text/signature is:

"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt," which he attributes Abraham Lincoln.

in today's column of Conrado de Quiros at the Philippine Daily Inquirer (There’s the Rub, http://opinion.inquirer.net/65771/new-normal#ixzz2lIiK6bgE), a line goes thus:

"...Tacloban of late, and you’ll appreciate Mark Twain’s remark that it is better to keep your mouth shut and be thought of as a fool than to open it and confirm the fact."

so who really said this quotable line?  curious cat cannot help but get curioser...

he doesn't know his cat.

cat owners are supposed to see, if not sense, a cat's tantrum time (called crazies) which more often than not is twice a day, usually in the morning and another one in the evening.  it happens for a few minutes and one can see it through the cat's crazy, frenzied, and agitated behavior for no apparent reason.  the eyes have it.  they're as if they don't know you or even see you.  humans must leave a cat alone at that state.  play with them at your own peril.

this hapless guy in the gif above was more focused on his selfie man god ug himoon pa gyod niya nga prop ang cat.  tua, nasagpaan hinoon. ;D

The cubs were born less than a week after the first anniversary of the eight-day conflict between Hamas and Israel in November 2012.

"The lioness gave birth yesterday (Monday) to two cubs, one male and one female," said Nahed al-Majdub, head of the "Bissan" amusement park, set up by the Hamas-run interior ministry.

"They were named Fajr and Sijil," said Majdub, Arabic for dawn and clay.

The names refer to the Fajr missiles Hamas fired at Israel in the conflict in November 2012 and the name the Palestinian Islamist movement gave to the fighting, "Operation Stones of Clay."

"It is the first time lions have been born in the Gaza Strip," Majdub said, adding that the cubs' parents were imported from Egypt four years ago.

Fox 2 asked a very good question: is this legal? Their legal analyst Charlie Langton says “Unless this city has some ordinance, that prevents these kind of fingers from being illegal of some kind â€" no! You could have a statue, some people might call it art, I don’t know, but there’s nothing illegal about it…I know it doesn’t look good, but there’s nothing illegal about it. Get over it!”

A private message, however, would be out of character for Mr. Markovitz. He’s quite the deal in Detroit. As this Deadline Detroit article summarizes in its first paragraph, “He's been shot twice, and he once was the target of a murder contract. He wrote an autobiography and bought and sold 11 local topless clubs. He once used a chimp in an act with predictably strange results.” And that’s not it.

Fox 2 wasn’t able to get the ex-wife on the horn, but did speak with Markovitz. He told them that the plan was to get even with the new boyfriend, because the two had allegedly had an affair while she was still married to our favorite art patron. He also told them that it wasn’t his intention for this to be public and that it only spread after his ex-wife’s daughter posted a picture on her Twitter account.

Man, unhappy with ex-wife, buys house next to her and puts up gigantic middle finger statue

By Will Lerner

Odd News

This story is one that warms the blackened, icy hearts of the Odd News team. In Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, Alan Markovitz, not satisfied with expressing his distaste for his ex-wife in just words, has bought and moved into a home that sits right next door to a house that’s occupied by…his ex-wife. That’s funny enough, but as WJBK Fox 2 points out, the cherry on top of this cupcake is an almost 12-foot high statue of a middle finger Markovitz put in his back yard, pointed toward his former love and her new boyfriend.

The statue, seen in daylight. (WJBK/Lenka Tuohy)

It's not that Filipinos are some happy-go-lucky people and don't care. It's a normal reaction to an abnormal situation. They're saying: 'I can deal with this. I'm at peace, and whatever happens tomorrow, happens.'

They need help, of course, but they're also saying, they're going to get by on their own if they have to.

Dealing with disaster has become an art, but Typhoon Haiyan was quite different. It was immense, and no amount of preparation could have prepared us to cope with it.

So rather than screaming or staring at the wall in a psychiatric ward, you do everything you can. You do your best, then let it go.

People playing music or sports in the rubble is a way of saying, 'Life goes on.' This is what they used to do every day, and they're going to keep doing it.

I covered the aftermath of the 2011 tsunami in Japan, and cannot recall a single laugh. Every nation is resilient in its own way, but there is something different in the Philippines that I have not yet put my finger on.

While walking through Tacloban's ruins, I and my colleagues were almost always greeted by kind words. When I asked how people were doing, people who had lost everything said, "Good." Superficial words, of course, but combined with the smiles, and with hearing "Hey, Joe" again and again (an old World War II reference to G.I. Joe), they helped form a picture I have not encountered in other disaster zones.

Perhaps it has something to do with an expression Filipinos have: "Bahala Na." It essentially means: Whatever happens, leave it to God.

faith it is in someone more powerful than us, then.  way to go.

She hit play, and Earth, Wind and Fire's 1978 hit "September" belted out. The sea of eyes squatting on the cargo plane immediately turned radiant.

Men twirled their arms. Women swayed back and forth, and the words echoed through the plane's cargo hold:

"Do you remember ...

While chasing the clouds away,

Our hearts were ringing,

In the key that our souls were singing.

As we danced in the night. Remember,

How the stars stole the night away."

Those who have gotten a chance to leave Tacloban have done so, of course, though many will no doubt return one day.

On Monday, I rode on a U.S. Air Force C-17 out of Tacloban to Manila, along with about 500 people displaced by the typhoon. There were babies and pregnant women. Some had tears in their eyes. One man held a doll with stuffed animal-like angel wings. He stared at it intensely, kissing it over and over.

As the plane neared Manila, an American crew member held her iPhone to her helmet's microphone, which was linked to the aircraft's speaker system.

De Castro has been counseling students in Manila who lost parents and siblings to the storm, and said some have displayed incredible determination. "They've lost their entire families, and they're telling me, 'I have to finish my studies because my parents paid my tuition through the end of the year.'"

That sense of determination is literally written in the ruins of Tacloban.

One handwritten message painted on a board outside a destroyed shop said the "eyes of the world" are on the city. It added, "Don't quit."

"So rather than screaming or staring at the wall in a psychiatric ward, you do everything you can. You do your best, then let it go," said de Castro, who helped provide psychological aid to victims of the 2004 Asia tsunami during a previous job with the U.N. Children's Fund.

People playing music or sports in the rubble, de Castro said, "is a way of saying, 'Life goes on.' This is what they used to do every day, and they're going to keep doing it."

"It's not that Filipinos are some happy-go-lucky people and don't care," she added. "It's a normal reaction to an abnormal situation. They're saying: 'I can deal with this.
