Lain pa, dunay moingon: "ASA man ang sundang?" (Na, molakaw diay ang sundang? Ang ASA ipangutana kana ngadto sa molakaw. Ang husto unta: "HAIN man ang sundang?"). ASA man diay si Pedro ron?". Pananglitan sa English: WHERE are you going? WHERE did you came from? WHERE are you now?

Kita adunay ASA, HAIN ug DIIN (nga may baryasyon pa gayod nga DIS-A).

Nine of the S&P's 10 sectors were lower on the day, with groups tied to the pace of economic growth, including financials (CME:^SPSY) and materials (.SPSMCM), among the weakest of the day. The only sector that rose was telecom (.SPLRCL), which is considered a defensive play.

About 70 percent of Nasdaq-listed shares closed lower while more than three-fourths of stocks traded on the New York Stock Exchange ended down.

Among the biggest losers in the financial sector, Capital One Financial (COF) lost 2 percent to $68.88 while American Express Co (AXP) lost 1.8 percent to $72.94.

The Dow Jones industrial average (^DJI) was down 136.34 points, or 0.90 percent, at 14,936.24. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (^GSPC) was down 14.38 points, or 0.85 percent, at 1,676.12. The Nasdaq Composite Index (^IXIC) was down 37.38 points, or 0.98 percent, at 3,770.38.

In weekend comments, neither Republicans nor Democrats offered any sign of progress and both blamed the other side for the impasse. The deadline to increase the ceiling is October 17.

"The market is vulnerable to further declines for as long as the situation remains unclear. With each passing day, the market becomes more restless," said Leo Grohowski, chief investment officer at BNY Mellon Wealth Management in New York.

Grohowski, who helps oversee $175 billion in client assets, estimated that each week the shutdown continues could shave 10 to 15 basis points off gross domestic product.

"While that isn't a lot, the recovery is still too fragile to withstand any long-term impact. It will start to have an impact on earnings estimates, which will impact valuations," he said.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks fell on Monday, extending two weeks of losses, as a lack of progress in ending the partial U.S. government shutdown or the debt-ceiling standoff kept investors nervous.

The S&P 500 ended near its lows of the session in a volatile day and dropped for its 10th time in the past 13 sessions. The CBOE Volatility index (.VIX), a measure of investor anxiety, jumped 16 percent to its highest level since June. The VIX has gained for three weeks, up 48 percent over that period.

Much of the government has been closed since the start of the month, resulting in up to a million workers being furloughed. Investors are also looking ahead to the upcoming debate over the debt ceiling, which could result in a default on U.S. debt if not resolved.

Ch’ang-sha Ching-ts’en made reference to this incompleteness in his criticism of a brother monk who was lost in a quiet, silent place:

You who sit on the top of a hundred-foot pole,
Although you have entered the Way, it is not yet genuine.
Take a step from the top of the pole
And worlds of the ten directions will be your entire body.
The student of Zen who is stuck in the vast, serene condition of
nondiscrimination must take another step to become mature.

Bashô’s haiku about the crow would be an expression of the “first principle,” emptiness all by itself â€" separated from the world of sights and sounds, coming and going. This is the ageless pond without the frog. It was another six years before Bashô took that one step from the top of the pole into the dynamic world of reality, where frogs play freely in the pond and thoughts play freely in the mind.

    The old pond has no walls;
    a frog just jumps in;
do you say there is an echo?

The Japanese language uses postpositions rather than prepositions, so phrases like the first segment of this haiku read literally “Withered branch on” and become “On [a] withered branch.” Unlike English, Japanese allows use of the past participle (or its equivalent) as a kind of noun, so in this haiku we have the “perchedness” of the crow, an effect that is emphasized by the postposition keri, which implies completion.

Bashô wrote this haiku six years before he composed “The Old Pond,” and some scholars assign to it the milestone position that is more commonly given the later poem. I think, however, that on looking into the heart of “Crow on a Withered Branch” we can see a certain immaturity. For one thing, the message that the crow on a withered branch evokes an autumn evening is spelled out discursively, a contrived kind of device that I don’t find in Bashô’s later verse. There is no turn of experience, and the metaphor is flat and uninteresting. More fundamentally, this haiku is a presentation of quietism, the trap Hsiang-yen and all other great teachers of Zen warn us to avoid. Sagara mudra samadhi is not adequate; remaining indefinitely under the Bodhi tree will not do; to muse without emerging is to be unfulfilled.

The Buddha changed with noticing the morning star â€" “Now when I view all beings everywhere,” he said, “I see that each of them possesses the wisdom and virtue of the Buddha . . .” â€" and after a week or so he rose from beneath the tree and began his lifetime of pilgrimage and teaching. Similarly, Bashô changed with that plop. The some 650 haiku that he wrote during his remaining eight years point precisely within his narrow medium to metaphors of nature and culture as personal experience. A before-and-after comparison may be illustrative of this change. For example, let us examine his much-admired “Crow on a Withered Branch.”

    On a withered branch
    a crow is perched:
    an autumn evening.

Kare eda ni                    Withered branch on
karasu no tomari keri    crow’s perched
    aki no kure                     autumn’s evening

Absorption is not the final step in the way of the Buddha. Hsiang-yen changed with that tock. When he heard that tiny sound, he began a new life. He found himself at last, and could then greet his master confidently and lay a career of teaching whose effect is still felt today. After this experience, he wrote:

One stroke has made me forget all my previous knowledge.
    No artificial discipline is at all needed;
In every movement I uphold the ancient way
    And never fall into the rut of mere quietism;
Wherever I walk no traces are left,
    And my senses are not fettered by rules of conduct;
Everywhere those who have attained to the truth
All declare this to be of highest order.

Hsiang-yen Chih-hsien became profoundly attuned to a sound while cleaning the grave of the Imperial Tutor, Nan-yang Hui-chung. His broom caught a little stone that sailed through the air and hit a stalk of bamboo. Tock! He had been working on the kôan “My original face before my parents were born,” and with that sound his body and mind fell away completely. There was only that tock. Of course, Hsiang-yen was ready for this experience. He was deep in the samadhi of sweeping leaves and twigs from the grave of an old master, just as Bashô is lost in the samadhi of an old pond, and just as the Buddha was deep in the samadhi of the great ocean.

Samadhi means “absorption,” but fundamentally it is unity with the whole universe. When you devote yourself to what you are doing, moment by moment â€" to your kôan when on your cushion in zazen, to your work, study, conversation, or whatever in daily life â€" that is samadhi. Do not suppose that samadhi is exclusively Zen Buddhist. Everything and everybody are in samadhi, even bugs, even people in mental hospitals.

In Bashô’s haiku, a frog appears. To Japanese of sensitivity, frogs are dear little creatures, and Westerners may at least appreciate this animal’s energy and immediacy. Plop!

“Plop” is onomatopoeic, as is oto in this instance. Onomatopoeia is the presentation of an action by its sound, or at least that is its definition in literary criticism. The poet may prefer to say that he became intimate with that sound. Thus the parody by Gibon Sengai is very instructive:

    The old pond!
    Bashô jumps in,
    The sound of the water!

D.T. Suzuki used to say that the condition of the Buddha’s mind while he was sitting under the Bodhi tree was that of sagara mudra samadhi (ocean-seal absorption). In this instance, mudra is translated as “seal” as in “notary seal.” We seal our zazen with our zazen mudra, left hand over the right, thumbs touching. Our minds are sealed with the serenity and depth of the great ocean in true zazen.

There is more, I think. Persistent inquiry casts that profound serenity. Tradition tells us that the Buddha was preoccupied with questions about suffering. The story of Zen is the story of men and women who were open to agonizing doubts about ultimate purpose and meaning. The entire teaching of Zen is framed by questions.

Profound inquiry placed the Buddha under the Bodhi tree, and his exacting focus brought him to the serene inner setting where the simple incident of noticing the morning star could suddenly disclose the ultimate Way. As Yamada Rôshi has said, any stimulus would do â€" a sudden breeze with the dawn, the first twittering of birds, the appearance of the sun itself. It just happened to be a star in the Buddha’s case.

COMMENT

This is probably the most famous poem in Japan, and after three hundred and more years of repetition, it has, understandably, become a little stale for Japanese people. Thus as English readers, we have something of an edge in any effort to see it freshly. The first line is simply “The old pond.” This sets the scene â€" a large, perhaps overgrown lily pond in a public garden somewhere. We may imagine that the edges are mossy, and probably a little broken down. With the frog as our clue, we guess that it is twilight in late spring.

This setting of time and place needs to be established, but there is more. “Old” is a cue word of another sort. For a poet such as Bashô, an evening beside a mossy pond evoked the ancient. Bashô presents his own mind as this timeless, endless pond, serene and potent â€" a condition familiar to mature Zen students.

In one of his first talks in Hawai’i, Yamada Kôun Rôshi said: “When your consciousness has become ripe in true zazen â€" pure like clear water, like a serene mountain lake, not moved by any wind â€" then anything may serve as a medium for realization.”

THE FORM

Ya is a cutting word that separates and yet joins the expressions before and after. It is punctuation that marks a transition â€" a particle of anticipation.

Though there is a pause in meaning at the end of the first segment, the next two segments have no pause between them. In the original, the words of the second and third parts build steadily to the final word oto. This has penetrating impact â€" “the frog jumps in water’s sound.” Haiku poets commonly play with their base of three parts, running the meaning past the end of one segment into the next, playing with their form, as all artists do variations on the form they are working with. Actually, the name “haiku” means “play verse.”

Other studies have shown that astaxanthin smoothes wrinkles, safeguards eyes, increases endurance and strength, boosts fat loss, and improves male fertility.

Dr. Mercola believes astaxanthin is safe and effective and advises his patients to add it to their health regimen. A good food source of astaxanthin is Pacific salmon. Astaxanthin is widely available from websites, health food and drugstores.

Studies have shown astaxanthin (pronounced asta-zan-thin):

Fights dementia. A study published in the British Journal of Nutrition found that astaxanthin reduces harmful free radicals in the blood by 50 percent. “We have found that there is an abnormal accumulation of hydroperoxides within red blood cells in people who have dementia and Alzheimer’s,” says Dr. Mercola. “We now know that if you give these patients astaxanthin, the amount of peroxides â€" harmful free radicals â€" is reduced by 50 percent. That’s a significant reduction.”

Reduces arthritis pain. When arthritis patients were given 4 mg of astaxanthin, they reported an 85 percent improvement in their pain and a 60 percent improvement in mobility. And 60 percent said the supplement was just as effective as prescription drugs.

Lowers cholesterol. People with high cholesterol levels were given 6, 12, or 18 mg doses of astaxanthin daily. At the end of 12 weeks, astaxanthin significantly decreased triglycerides and increased HDL (good) cholesterol, although total cholesterol levels were unchanged. The study, published in the journal Atherosclerosis, found the greatest increases in HDL cholesterol in the groups taking 6 and 12 mg.

Shields diabetics. A study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that astaxanthin protects cells against damage caused by high sugar levels, reducing the risk of kidney disease, neuropathy, and diabetic retinopathy.

Prevents heart disease. A report in Future Cardiology analyzed eight clinical trials and found that astaxanthin fights oxidative stress and inflammation â€" two main components in the development of heart disease. And a study published in Nutrition and Metabolism found that astaxanthin reduced levels of C-reactive protein, a biomarker of inflammation.

Astaxanthin, a powerful, natural antioxidant that gives the reddish color to salmon, is a new nutritional superstar. According to experts, this amazing supplement, which is in the carotenoid family, is thousands of times more powerful at scavenging free radicals than vitamin C, and may be a major key to preventing the degenerative diseases of aging.

“One of the major ways our body ages is through oxidative stress, and astaxanthin is one of the most potent natural antioxidants available to help prevent this degenerative damage,” Joseph Mercola, M.D., author of the New York Times best-seller The No- Grain Diet, told Newsmax Health.

“Astaxanthin is hundreds of times more effective than vitamin E in squelching singlet oxygen free radicals, and far exceeds the free-radical scavenging power of vitamin C, CoQ10, beta-carotene, and green tea,” said Dr. Mercola, director of the Optimal Wellness Center.

“It’s 6,000 times stronger than vitamin C, 500 times stronger than vitamin E, and 3,000 times stronger than resveratrol and quercetin.”

(Reuters) - American actress Scarlett Johansson has been named the sexiest woman alive for the second time by Esquire, the men's lifestyle magazine said on Monday.

"The Avengers" star was named sexiest woman in 2006 and is the only woman to have been given the title twice by the publication. The annual recipient of the title is chosen by Esquire editors.

Husky-voiced Johansson, who rose to prominence as a teenager in the 2001 cult film "Ghost World," stars in three films this fall. In "Don Jon" she plays the girlfriend of a pornography addict and in the sci-fi thriller "Under the Skin" she is a seductive extraterrestrial. She voices a man's computer companion in "Her."

"You know, I gotta hustle," Johansson told the magazine of her busy work schedule. "I'm a 28-year-old woman in the movie business, right? Pretty soon the roles you're offered all become mothers. Then they just sort of stop."

Johansson said last month she was engaged to marry French journalist Romain Dauriac. Her previous marriage to actor Ryan Reynolds ended in 2011 after three years.

Last year's sexiest woman, according to Esquire, was American actress Mila Kunis. Barbadian pop singer Rihanna, British actress Kate Beckinsale and South African actress Charlize Theron have all been given the "sexiest" distinction by the magazine.

Loving money may not be good for your love life, according to new research that finds that materialists have unhappier marriages than couples who don't care much about possessions.

The effect holds true across all levels of income, said study researcher Jason Carroll, a professor of family life at Brigham Young University. And a materialist marrying a like-minded soul may not get off the hook: The least satisfying marriages were those in which both spouses cared strongly about material goods.

"We thought it would be the incongruent or unmatched pattern that would be most problematic, where one's a spender and one's a saver," Carroll told LiveScience. "Our study found that it's the couples where both spouses have high levels of materialism that struggle the most."

Sure your dog's clever … but is he or she one of the smartest dog breeds out there? "While all dogs are smart, certain breeds are more intelligent at specific tasks than others," said Lisa Peterson, spokesperson with the American Kennel Club. Now we know every dog is different, and mixed-breeds are some of the smartest, so we want to mention them up front. If you have a mixed breed (or any breed!) that's great at a certain task, we'd love to hear about it in the comments.

Meanwhile we asked the AKC to help us list 10 dog breeds that excel in intelligence, especially when it comes to the job they do.

One scientist â€" Brighton’s Christopher Liu, who is the only scientist that performs this procedure â€" was like, “Naw man, that’s not cool; we want to give you your vision back.” So, in December of 2012, Tibbetts underwent groundbreaking surgery called “Osteo-Odonto-Keratoprosthesis,” which constructs a new eye using a plastic lens and one of Tibbetts’s own teeth. They drill a tiny hole into the tooth, insert the lens into the hole, and then insert the whole tooth into the eye socket. If the retina is still functioning, the patient can see through the tooth-lens window â€" and the body will never reject it, since the tooth belonged to the patient in the first place. Hard core.

“I had a picture in my head of what [my kids] looked like,” said Tibbetts, “but they were better.” Cue massive, world-wide “awww.”

You’ll be able to catch more of Tibbetts’s story in an upcoming BBC One documentary called The Day I Got My Sight Back, because this guy has a tooth for an eye, and why wouldn’t you want to watch that?

Because science is totally insane and doesn’t care what you think, they’ve decided to go ahead and start restoring sight in blind patients. And because science is really ridiculous, they’re doing it by implanting teeth into eye sockets. Yep, that’s what you do when you’re just that crazy-awesome.

Ian Tibbetts was 27 when a piece of scrap metal hit him in the face, eventually leading to loss of vision in his left eye, and the loss of his right eye altogether. Now 43, Tibbetts had tragically never seen the faces of his 4-year-old twin boys.

It’s worth noting that China’s attitudes changed very slowlyâ€"with a majority still agreeing with the statement in the second survey roundâ€"while India actually saw a reversal in attitudes. Signs of progress in Saudi Arabia are even harder to spot. The country did allow women to vote in local elections this year (the only type of elections the inherited autocracy permits), but women still aren’t allowed to drive to the polls, or anywhere else for that matter. Two women were recently given a 10-month prison sentence because they had taken a food parcel to the house of someone they thought was in an abusive relationship. Apparently this amounted to the illegal act of “incitement of a wife to defy the authority of her husband.”

The World Bank’s analysis suggests that greater gender parity in legal rights is associated with greater female participation in the labor force, greater ownership of firms, and greater income equality. But the real argument for gender parity isn’t instrumentalâ€"it’s a moral issue. It’s hard to see why gross discrimination on the basis of sex should have any more international legitimacy than discrimination based on skin color. By that standard, there’s no reason why the policies practiced by Saudi Arabia toward women should be any more tolerable than the policies used by apartheid-era South Africa to keep whites privileged over blacks.

That oil-rich Saudi Arabia will face the same sanctions and global opprobrium which South Africa suffered in the 1980s may seem unlikely today. But the evolution in global attitudes toward women’s rights suggests that gender discrimination is fast becoming unacceptable. The men who rule Saudi Arabia and countries like it would be wise to change their policies toward their female citizens, before change is forced on them.
#16393
At the same time, the opportunities for the next generation of girls might be a little better than for the last one. The World Bank’s survey suggests that for the measures where historical data are available, more than half of the restrictions on women’s activities that were in place in 1960 were removed by 2010. For example, in 1988, Brazil repealed legislation designating the husband as sole legal representative of the family. In the same year, South Africa stopped treating women in customary marriages as legal minors under the guardianship of their husbands. And seven years earlier, Spain lifted requirements that married women had to have their husband’s permission to start judicial proceedings.

And that reflects changing attitudes worldwide. For example, out of the 31 countries included in the two World Values Survey waves in the late 1990s and 2006-2009, 26 countries saw a declining proportion of respondents answering that men made better political leaders than women. The proportion dropped from 31 percent to 25 percent in the U.S., from 44 percent to 28 percent in Mexico, and from 47 percent to 32 percent in Brazil. The number of women in parliaments worldwide, and the ratio of girls to boys in school, has never been higherâ€"suggesting more people are willing to vote for women and more parents are willing to send their girls to school.
#16394
The World Bank’s survey of Women, Business and the Law reports that almost 90 percent of the world’s countries still have at least one legal difference restricting women’s opportunities in 2014. And some countries see draconian limits on the freedom of women. Nine states including Malaysia, Syria, and the West Bank restrict women’s movement outside the home. Fifteen economies including Bolivia, Cameroon, Jordan, and Sudan allow husbands to prevent their wives from accepting jobs. Nearly 30 economies, including Indonesia and the Philippines, still designate husbands head of household with power over decisions like where to live or getting official documents. And 79 different economies restrict the type of jobs women can do just on the grounds of their sex. In Russia, for example, women are barred from working as freight train conductors, sailors, woodworkers, high antenna installers, or drivers of loading machines.

Beyond legal discrimination is more widespread practical discrimination. Violence toward women starts early and is repeated hideously often. Sex-selective abortion is replacing infant neglect as the tool of choice among families across the globe who want girls not boys, with somewhere between 4 million and 12 million sex-selective abortions performed in India alone over the past three decades. Some 125 million women worldwide have been subject to genital mutilation. And domestic violence toward women (PDF) remains by far the most widespread form of violence worldwide.

As German Chancellor Angela Merkel basks in the glow of reelection and Hillary Clinton ponders another run for the presidency in 2016, it’s worth remembering how far much of the rest of the world is from gender equity. Last week, a respected cleric in Saudi Arabia responded to a countrywide petition effort by women demanding the right to drive a car by suggesting that getting behind the wheel could damage their ovaries.

The good news is that such examples of misogyny are becoming a little less commonâ€"especially in terms of legal discrimination. There’s hope that the time is not far off when the obscene anachronism that is Saudi Arabia’s policy toward women evokes the same international disgustâ€"and international responseâ€"that led to global shaming and sanctions against South Africa’s apartheid regime.
