Fans line up for best-selling author - Grumpy Cat?

Oct 07, 2013
by Steve Stout

TEMPE, AZ (CBS5) - The Valley's most famous feline had good reason to smile, and her seemingly permanent scowl doesn't mean she's not happy to see you.

Grumpy Cat had dozens of fans lining up to get their picture taken with her during a signing for her new book Sunday at Changing Hands Bookstore in Tempe, AZ.

The signing came on the heels of the internet sensation's endorsement deal with Friskies last week.

But it was the new book that drew people in droves to see Grumpy Cat, whose real name is Tardar Sauce.

Picture requests were not the only comments Grumpy Cat's owner Tabatha Bundesen heard at the popular bookstore.

"'I wish I could pet her,' or, 'I love your cat,' or, 'You're so lucky,'" Bundesen said. "I do feel lucky."

The literary work is called Grumpy Cat: A Grumpy Book and it's been out about a month now.

The book teaches the art of "grumpiness," Bundesen said, and it is already a New York Times bestseller.

he also landed on the new york magazine cover...

Grumpy Cat (New York Magazine)

There are famous Internet animals, and then there is Grumpy Cat. The one-year-old feline, whose perpetually frowning face turned her into a massive online sensation over the past year, officially became a one-cat empire when she graced the cover of New York magazine’s “Boom Brands” issue in October. The world learned that the estimated value of the Grumpy Cat brand â€" which includes a coffee line, a New York Times-bestselling book and even a movie deal â€" is worth an estimated $1 million. The lesson from all this, according to New York magazine? Invest in cats.

more interesting trivia:

A Syrian-Jewish trader, A.N. Hashim, who had arrived in 1892, helped Filipino patriot Jose Rizal escape from Dapitan. Having recently gained U.S. citizenship, Hashim circulated freely among both Spanish and U.S. forces, providing the latter with intelligence.

Although he had landed in Manila with a suitcase of watches, after the war, Hashim took an interest in entertainment, beginning with a bicycle racetrack and later establishing the Manila Grand Opera House. He later diversified into government supply contracting (for both the U.S. and Filipino governments), mining, and import-export.

How many Filipinos practice Judaism, Tita ? Just curious lang ko.

i would hazard a guess, lorenz, and it is that they may not be that many now.  i can't say i ever met one here who professes to be a jew.  besides, they may not be as obvious as those you see on the streets and shops of madison avenue in new york or the kosher markets in manhattan.  here's an interesting tidbit, though:

About 100 families hold synagogue membership, and it is estimated that there are between 200 and 500 Jews in Manila and the Philippines altogether. In Pampanga (about 3-4 hours drive from Manila), there is a Jewish club called The Bagel Boys.

jewish surnames like cohn, bachrach, switzer, etc. who are all in business as jews invariably are, interestingly, they are regarded more as "americans" rather than "jews" because their presence is more secular than religious.  yet, even if there really is no known kosher restaurant here:

The Jewish community of Manila may be the only Jewish community in Asia that has its own locally-slaughtered kosher meat and locally-produced kosher cheese, and it may also be the region's oldest.

what does this quotation mean?

It means that dogs will blindly follow their master. It depends on you to feed it, to clean it, to play with it etc. It needs you, aka the person is in charge.

But no matter what you do, when you have a cat, they are there because they get good service. You feed your cat because it wants food, not because it couldn't find food if it wanted it. Cats clean themselves, they play with themselves, they don't need people, they just stay because it's convenient, aka the cat's in charge.

Or, alternatively, cats have been using feline-telepathy for centuries and now have the ability to control human minds. 2012 is the scheduled year for feline world domination, and we will soon wait on cats hand and paw, but we'll still be able to have dogs.

The National Dog Mill Rescue in Colorado saved the pup, but Dobby had already lost all of his teeth, causing his tongue to hang out the side of his mouth. However, a family from Connecticut adopted him, giving Dobby a happy home and turning his awkward Supa Tongue into a fashion statement. The dog now has his own Facebook page and huge fan following, which has brought awareness to puppy mills and dog rescue.

Today, in the wake of one of the worst storms in history, with perhaps more than 10,000 dead and hundreds of thousands homeless, we are fully committed to fulfilling President Quezon’s prophecy and returning the favor to the Filipino people. Not just because we are Jews, the heirs to this nation’s life-saving actions, but because we firmly believe in mutual responsibility and the idea that each individual life is valuable beyond measure.

These efforts now come full circle, especially for one member of our team arriving in the Philippines later this week, Danny Pins. In addition to being one of our development and employment experts, Pins’ mother and grandparents were among the German Jews who fled to the Philippines to seek safe haven in 1938. His posting, in many ways a homecoming despite previous trips to the country, is highly symbolic.

It’s a formula JDC, which is celebrating its centennial this year, has developed over decades of efforts in the field, from helping Ukrainians starved by the Bolsheviks in the 1920s to rehabilitating survivors of genocide in Rwanda. And on behalf of the North American Jewish community and with its support, we have over the past decade delivered tens of millions of dollars in aid to victims of natural and manmade disasters in Southeast Asia, Haiti and Japan.

About 30 percent of funds raised will be dedicated to immediate relief for food, water, shelter, medical supplies and care, unless the emergency phase lasts longer because of expanding, critical needs among survivors. The rest will be invested in sustainable local projects that will emerge in the long, slow process of rehabilitation that is sure to come.

As part of our ongoing response to the typhoon, JDC will ship critically important food, shelter, and hygiene and medical supplies â€" as well as ensure the provision of water and sanitation items and shelter support â€" through its partners, the Afya Foundation and Catholic Relief Services. JDC’s advance team of disaster relief and development experts will head to the Philippines later this week to assess damage and needs while consulting with our local/international partners and the Filipino Jewish community to ensure maximum impact for storm survivors.

We recalled this moment in history last week when we began reading reports and watching coverage of the impending super typhoon Haiyan â€" the strongest storm in recorded history â€" as it barreled toward the Philippines. In anticipation of the impact, JDC’s disaster relief and development staff assembled a contingency plan that went into full effect once news emerged of the death and destruction wrought by Haiyan.

At the time that Manuel Quezon admitted Jews to his country, the Filipino president made what seems today like a remarkably prescient statement.

“The people of the Philippines will have in the future every reason to be glad that when the time of need came, their country was willing to extend a welcome hand,” he was quoted as saying.

Thanks to their initiative, these refugees were issued rare travel certificates to the Asian country to work as skilled laborers in the Frieders’ cigar factories in Manila â€" though in reality, few of them had any experience in the industry whatsoever. The audacious operation, seemingly extraordinary today, is the subject of the recently released documentary “Rescue in the Philippines.”

Op-Ed: In its time of need, repaying a debt to the Philippines

By Alan H. Gill
November 12, 2013

Alex Frieder, seated, surrounded by Jewish refugees that he and his brothers helped escape from Nazi Germany and Austria to the Philippines. (3 Roads Communications)

NEW YORK (JTA) â€" As the extent of the catastrophic damage and tragic death toll continues to grow in the Philippines, a particularly heroic piece of history should be recalled by the global Jewish community, which owes a debt to the island nation.

Seven decades ago, a Philippine president, a globetrotting Jewish family named Frieder and the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, my organization, helped save the lives of more than 1,000 Jews who otherwise would have almost certainly died in the Holocaust.

"PG" is not parental guidance here; it's Philip Goldberg, the new US ambassador to the philippines who arrived yesterday, 25 november 2013.

Goldberg posted on his Twitter account an “unselfie” â€" where he covered his face with a note calling for donations and assistance for the victims of Yolanda.

Netizens lauded this move by Goldberg, whose appointment was earlier criticized. He was earlier expelled from Bolivia supposedly for conspiring in the unrest against President Evo Morales.

Want to Help Typhoon Haiyan Victims? Post an 'Unselfie'

By Todd Wasserman
Nov 15, 2013

An ad agency exec has applied his marketing prowess to help funnel aid to victims of Typhoon Haiyan by starting a movement of "unselfies."

Nicholas Bordas, VP at TBWA/Europe and president of Being Worldwide, proposed the idea, which he had spotted elsewhere, to his 61,000 LinkedIn followers on Thursday. The idea originated with BBDO Guerrero in Manila, though.

"Social networks in the Philippines have become indispensable sources of information and aid for Haiyan survivors," Bordas noted in the post. "Photos not relevant to the current disaster are discouraged. However, people have been posting 'unselfies' where instead of showing their face, they show their support for the Philippines by holding up a piece of paper with the URL of the donation page to send aid."

The pictures direct users to SupportUnicef.org/Philippines, where they can donate money to Typhoon Haiyan victims.

The simple idea has caught on among Instagram and Twitter users, where it serves as a nice counterpoint against solipsistic selfies.

what is an 'unselfie'?

it's posting a picture of oneself but with the face covered with a piece of paper on which the URL of the donation page for aid to the victims of the typhoon yolanda (haiyan) is written.

the idea was started by BBDO Guerrero in manila.  it spread worldwide.

Elsewhere, in mainland China, dog meat is still very much on the menu. In fact, it's more expensive than pork or beef.

So, while more people may be eating dog as the country gets richer, newly wealthy Chinese have embraced dog-owning culture with a vengeance.

Dogs are brought into restaurants, fussed over in public, dressed up in ridiculous outfits and dyed to look like ferocious tigers. (http://www.globalpost.com/)

#16187
The trend demonstrates how quickly and dramatically attitudes toward pets â€" particularly dogs â€" have changed in many parts of Asia.

In Taiwan, for example, just 10 years ago, dogs were still eaten in public restaurants and raised on farms for that purpose. Traditional Chinese medicine held that so-called "fragrant meat" from dogs could fortify one's health. Now, eating dog is viewed by many as an embarrassing reminder of a poorer time.
