Philippines - Former President Corazon Aquino is suffering from cancer, her daughter and actress Kris Aquino confirmed on Monday.

Ex President Cory ( Center )

In a press conference in Quezon City, the younger Aquino said tests confirmed that her mother is suffering from colon cancer and asked for prayers as the former president battled the illness.

Kris said that after experiencing high blood pressure, difficulty of breathing and notable loss of weight, the former president recently decided to undergo medical checkup which confirmed her ailment.

"Our mother had suffered from an episode of high blood pressure and difficulty in breathing followed by fever during the week in between Christmas and New Year. Since that time, we became concerned because of her consistent cough, loss of appetite and noticeable weight loss.

"Our mom wanted to know what was wrong with her, and with her family by her side, she submitted herself to a check-up and several tests. The results showed that our mother is suffering cancer of the colon," the younger Aquino read from a statement.

Kris said it was her mother's decision for the family to release a statement regarding her health condition.

"Desisyon po ng nanay namin na mag-release kami ng statement, para maunawaan ng lahat ang kanyang kasalukuyang kalagayan. Nakikiusap po kami na sana maintindihan ninyo na kailangan ng aming ina, kagaya ng lahat ng pasyenteng nagpapagaling, ng panahon ng katahimikan," said Kris, who became emotional while reading the statement.

She added that aside from prayers for the former president's recovery, the family is also asking for the public and the media to respect Mrs Aquino's privacy.

"It's a very difficult time for our family, most especially for our mother. We respectfully ask that she be accorded her privacy.

"Our mom remains a believer in the power of prayer. We ask for your compassion and for your prayers for our mother's recovery," the younger Aquino said.

The former president is a vocal critic of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and in fact twice called for Mrs Arroyo's resignation over corruption allegations in her administration. Mrs Aquino also accompanied ZTE deal probe witness Rodolfo Noel Lozada Jr in some of his public appearances exposing corruption in government.

To recall, Mrs Aquino was confined on Christmas eve at the Medical City in Pasig for high fever. - GMANews.TV

WBC champ Manny Pacquiao and wife Jinkee react to a question during a press conference at the GMA Network Center in Quezon City Monday.

MANILA, Philippines - Hours after returning from the United States, boxing sensation Emmanuel "Manny" Pacquiao on Monday morning visited the historic Quiapo Church in Manila to hear Mass amid a throng of supporters welcoming him.

Radio reports said that Pacquiao arrived at the historic site on board a gray sports utility vehicle at 9:05 a.m., along with his wife Jinkee.

Paquiao and his convoy arrived at the church barely 25 minutes after leaving New World Renaissance Hotel in Makati City, where he had breakfast with his family and friends.

Pacquiao arrived aboard Philippine Airlines flight 103 before 7 a.m. Monday and received a warm welcome from well-wishers and supporters.

Radio dzBB said that the supporters, mostly vendors from the vicinity, crowded at the church entrance to get a glimpse of the boxing champ. Although most fans who trooped to the Church were unable to get near the Pacquiao due to the tight security, he still took some time to shake hands with some of his fans.

The special Mass, officiated by Father Frank Villanueva, was held to celebrate his victory over Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez, who previously held the World Boxing Council super featherweight championship title.

A separate report from GMA's Unang Balita earlier said that the Manila Police District has fielded 60 policemen both from its headquarters and its Station 3 to secure Pacquiao's visit at the historic site.

Authorities were also quoted as saying they would be enforcing strict security measures to prevent a repeat of when Pacquiao last visited the Quiapo Church after his fight with Mexican Erik Morales.

Lawmen also assured that they would not only be looking after Paquiao's safety but as well as that of the scores of supporters who greeted Paquiao at the historic site. Environment Sec. Jose "Lito" Atienza also attended the Mass.

In an interview shortly after arriving at the airport, Pacquiao said he would be having a motorcade Tuesday in Quezon City, Manila, Pasay City, and Makati City.

He said he is set to return to his hometown in General Santos City Wednesday even as talks are in progress if he would also be entertaining invitations to drop by Bacolod City in Negros Occidental. - Mark Merueñas, GMANews.TV

Some 400 students of a Philippine school in Kuwait will be displaced after the Ministry of Education of the country cancelled the learning institution’s permit to operate.

ABS-CBN News Middle East correspondent Maxxy Santiago reported that Kuwaiti education officials have given the students and faculty of the New Kuwait Philippines International School (NKPIS) until March 31 to operate.

The Kuwaiti officials revoked NKPIS license because the government will use the land where the school is situated.

As this developed, NKPIS administration has sought the help of the Philippine embassy officials to intervene in the matter.

Talal Al-Jeri, NKPIS owner, clarified that the cancellation of the school’s license is not due to the problem in the curriculum but only due to the issue of property where the campus is located.

In a meeting with NKPIS, Ambassador Ricardo Endaya said he will communicate the dire problem of the students once the school stops operating.

"We will be writing for another reconsideration to allow Filipino students to continue with their studies," Endaya told NKPIS officials.

Meanwhile, Dr. Jesusa Cristina Puno, NKPIS principal, assured the students’ parents and guardians that the school administration is doing everything to let the school to continue to operate.

"I want to let them know that we are doing everything we can. I believe they (students) have not problem whatsoever studying in our school," Puno said in Tagalog.

                 Zena

Filipino-British woman is on the brink of capturing the Miss England 2008 crown, ABS-CBN Europe News Bureau reported.

Zena Thirlwall, 17, has already passed the heat 6 qualifying round of the beauty pageant and has topped the ongoing text voting in England.

Thirlwall, a black belt in taekwondo, grew up and studied in Al-Khobar, Saudi Arabia.

She was chosen to be one of the contenders for Miss England after sending her photographs to Miss Photographic contest of the pageant.

In 2006, Thirlwall was crowned the Binibining Pilipinas in Saudi Arabia. The pageant was held in the Philippine embassy in Riyadh.

Currently, Thirlwall with other 20 pageant hopefuls entered the text voting in England which will last until March 30.

From the seven women who will get the highest votes, two will be selected to enter the Miss England beauty pageant.

Thirlwall’s father, Martin Zane, said he is confident that his daughter has a good chance of capturing the beauty title.

"She's really a British girl down at heart. I’m sure that in this particular contest, and any contest anyway, that if she wins she will really carry it very well and she will do some good for the winning title," he said. With reports from Raffy Beltran

Many Brits will have childhood memories of celebrating Harvest Festival, a boring event that mostly involved admiring vegetables. As is usually the case, they do this sort of thing much better in Japan.

The recently celebrated H?nen festival is a fertility festival (h?nen meaning harvest), in which the centre of attention is less focused on prize cabbages, and more about gigantic wooden penises.

The festival involves carrying the aforementioned massive penis from one shrine to another, while in the surrounding festivities, revellers enjoy penis-shaped food and pray while rubbing stone testicles.

Penis souvenirs are also available.

Music and Video / Arnel Pineda of Journey back in RP
March 19, 2008, 07:35:42 AM

  Arnel Pineda

The country's pride, Arnel Pineda, the lead singer of popular American rock band Journey, is back in the country after his debut stint abroad.

"I arrived here Wednesday morning, March 12," Pineda told abs-cbnNEWS.com in an exclusive interview inside the ABS-CBN compound in Quezon City.

Pineda just arrived from his debut performances as a new band member of Journey in Viña del Mar in Chile and Las Vegas, Nevada.

"I performed with the band in Viña del Mar in Chile then in Santiago. I had two performances in America and two performances in Chile."

Pineda, who hails from Quezon City, left the country to be with his new bandmates at the end of January this year and went straight to Los Angeles, California to rehearse for two weeks, then stayed for a while in San Francisco and went to Chile for his kick-off show.

According to Pineda he will never forget his first appearance as the vocalist of Journey, especially because the show was held in Viña del Mar, known to be solidly for Steve Perry (Journey's lead vocalist until 1998).

"It was a nerve-wracking experience. It feels like it's your first night with your love one after you get married, like that. And I can't believe that they welcomed me especially in Viña del Mar. Solid Steve Perry fans are there, and they embraced me," Pineda said.

High pressure

The singer shared that the pressure for his new work is high but his new bandmates were there to support and guide him.

"Of course there's pressure but my bandmates are there to guide me. It's like I came from little league and now I joined a major league. So I'm reaching a different standard.

Pineda added that he is close to all band members: "They are all okay, I talk to all of them."

He also revealed that there were some who threw criticisms against him but for him he took it as part of his work.

"Of course there were criticisms, you cannot please everyone, it's just like that. Actually they are just telling me, reading it to me but I don't mind it since my focus is to work, I just want to work," Pineda said.

He added "so if there are criticisms, what I am doing to correct myself is to watch again my performances."

Pineda is back in the country to stay with his family for Holy Week, after which he is set to go back in the US on March 29 to do one show.

The singer joined his first band at age 15 and has been singing professionally for the past 25 years. His voice also won him the Best Vocalist award at the World Band Explosion in 1987 -- a feat that he repeated the following year.

He has been a veteran of several bands and is a regular in clubs in Makati, Olongapo and Quezon City. His latest band, The Zoo, released its first album "Zoology" under MCA Universal Records last September 2007.

It is Pineda's stint in The Zoo that got him noticed by Journey axeman Neal Schon. Schon said he was looking for a replacement singer on popular video-sharing site YouTube.com when he discovered videos of Pineda and The Zoo singing Journey songs, such as "Open Arms" and "Faithfully".

After this, the band asked Pineda to join them as their vocalist and the rest is history.

Emmanuel Dapidran Pacquiao, (born December 17, 1978 in Kibawe, Bukidnon, Mindanao, Philippines) is a Filipino professional boxer. He is the current WBC Super Featherweight Champion. He is also the former world champion at IBF Super Bantamweight, and WBC Flyweight divisions. He is the first Asian boxer to have won three titles in three different weight divisions. His younger brother, Bobby Pacquiao, is a lightweight boxer.

Pacquiao started his professional boxing career in 1995 at 106 pounds (Light flyweight) at the age of 16. His early fights usually took place in small venues and were shown on Vintage Sports' Blow by Blow evening boxing show (hosted by John Ray Betita). His professional debut was a four-round bout against Edmund Ignacio on January 22, 1995, which Pacquiao won via decision, becoming an instant star of the program.

His weight increased from 106 to 113 pounds before losing in his 12th bout against Rustico Torrecampo via a third round technical knockout (TKO). As well-known sportscaster Joaquin "Quinito" Henson observed, Pacquiao clearly had not made weight, so he was forced to use heavier gloves than Torrecampo, thereby putting Pacquiao at a disadvantage.[citation needed]

Shortly after the Torrecampo fight, Pacquiao settled at 112 pounds, winning the WBC Flyweight title over Chatchai Sasakul in the eighth round only to lose it in his second defense against Medgoen Singsurat, or Medgoen 3K Battery, via a third round knockout on a bout held at Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand. Technically, Pacquiao lost the belt at the scales by surpassing the required weight of 112 lb (51 kg).

Following his loss to Singsurat, Pacquiao gained weight anew, this time stopping at the super bantamweight division of 122 lb (55 kg) where he picked up the WBC International Super Bantamweight title, defending it five times before his next world title fight came.

Pacquiao’s big break came on June 23, 2001, against IBF Super Bantamweight champion Lehlohonolo Ledwaba. Pacquiao stepped into the fight as a late replacement and won the fight by technical knockout to become the IBF Super Bantamweight champion on a bout held at MGM Grand, Las Vegas, Nevada. He defended this title four times.

Pacquiao's rise
Pacquiao went on to defend his title four times before the match that many consider to have defined his career, a non-title bout against the Mexican boxing idol, Marco Antonio Barrera of Mexico. Pacquiao, moving up in weight and in his first fight ever in the featherweight division brought his power with him and defeated Barrera via a TKO in the 11th round at the Alamodome, San Antonio, Texas.

Only six months removed from his win over Barrera, Pacquiao went on to challenge another respected Mexican counter puncher, Juan Manuel Márquez, then holder of the World Boxing Association (WBA) and International Boxing Federation (IBF) Featherweight titles. The fight held at the MGM Grand ended in a controversial draw after he knocked down Márquez three times in the first round, but lost most of the latter rounds. One of the judges later admitted to making an error in the scorecards, as he scored the first round as a "10-7" in favor of Pacquiao instead of the standard "10-6" for a three knockdown round.

In a bout held at Taguig City, Philippines, Pacquiao fought against Fahsan (2K-Gas Battery) Por Thawatchai. Pacquiao sent Por Thawchwai to the canvas three times en route to a knockout in the fourth round. A left uppercut to the jaw knocked down the Thai fighter that lifted his feet off the canvas and ended the fight.

Pacquiao once again moved up another division from 126 to 130 pounds in order to fight another Mexican fighter, three-time division champion Erik Morales on March 19, 2005 at the MGM Grand. However this time around at his first fight in the superfeatherweight division, Pacquiao lost the 12 round match by a unanimous decision from the judges.

On September 10, 2005, Manny Pacquiao knocked out Hector Velasquez, capturing the WBC International Super Featherweight title in the process on a fight held at Staples Center, Los Angeles, California.

Pacquiao defeated Erik Morales by TKO in a much-anticipated rematch on January 21, 2006 in Las Vegas at Thomas and Mack Center.

Newfound fame
After the Morales bout, Pacquiao was in the limelight again during the first week of February 2006 when a waitress working in a Manila night club claimed that he was the father of her son, born out of a whirlwind affair with the boxer. The boxer, allegedly, was giving the child financial support which was also kept a secret from his wife, Jinkee, until she found out and caused a problem in their marriage, but soon mended.

Trainer Freddie Roach had previously voiced concerns about the late night lifestyle and warned that the boxer was in danger of losing both his edge and focus. Roach noted that there are too many distractions surrounding Pacquiao in the Philippines.[2]

On July 2, 2006, Pacquiao defeated another Mexican, Oscar Larios, a two-time super-bantamweight champion. Despite his camp's big promise of an early knockout, the fight went until the final round with Pacquiao knocking down the Mexican two times during the 12-round bout for the WBC International Super Featherweight title held at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, Philippines.[3]

In September 2006, Pacquiao signed a major deal with Golden Boy Promotions (GBP), headed by Oscar de la Hoya, which is good for seven fights.[4] This development was confirmed by coach Freddie Roach. Under the deal, Pacquiao is guaranteed a prize money of US$5 million for each fight. With regard to profits made on each fight, Pacquiao will be receiving at least 90% while the remaining 10% will go to Golden Boy Promotions.

Pacquiao and Morales fought for a third time (with the "series" tied 1-all) on November 18, 2006. Witnessed by a near-record crowd of 18,276, the match saw Pacquiao defeating Morales via a third-round knockout at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.[5]

After the Pacquiao-Morales rematch, Arum announced that Manny returned his signing bonus check back with Golden Boy Promotions signalling intentions to stay with Top Rank. This resulted in GBP's decision to sue the famed fighter over contractual breaches.[6]

At the end of 2006, he was named by both HBO and Ring Magazine as the fighter of the year, with HBO also naming him as the most exciting fighter of the year.

After a failed promotional negotiation with Marco Antonio Barrera's camp, Bob Arum chose Jorge Solis as his next opponent among several fighters that Bob Arum offered him to fight as a replacement. The bout was held in San Antonio on April 14, 2007. In the sixth round of the bout an accidental head butt occurred giving Pacquiao a cut under his left eyebrow. The fight ended in the 8th round when Pacquiao knocked Solis down twice, with Solis barely beating the 10 count after the second knockdown, prompting the referee (who was also a doctor) to stop the fight. The victory raised Pacquiao's win-draw-loss record to 44-3-2 with 35 KOs.

On June 29, 2007 it was announced that Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions agreed to settle their lawsuit, meaning the long-awaited rematch with Marco Antonio Barrera will occur despite being the number 1 contender for the super-featherweight title of Juan Manuel Marquez.

Since Bob Arum was out on a vacation, Golden Boy Promotions' chief executive Richard Schaefer politely declined to discuss Manny Pacquiao’s purse from the October 6, 2007 rematch with Marco Antonio Barrera (at the Mandalay Bay Resort Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas). But Pacquiao was likely to get a purse of $5 million, plus possibly a share of the pay-per-view rights.[7] Pacquiao defeated Barrera in their rematch by a wide easy unanimous decision. In the 11th round, Pacquiao's punch caused a deep cut under Barrera's right eye. Barrera retaliated with an illegal punch on the break that dazed Pacquiao but also caused the referee to deduct a point from Barrera. Two judges scored the bout 118-109, while the third scored it 115-112.[8]

In The Ring magazine, Pacquiao (45-3-2) remains at the top of the junior lightweight division (130 pounds). He had been in the ratings for 108 weeks. Pacquiao is also at No. 2 in the pound-for-pound category behind welterweight champ Floyd Mayweather.[9][10]

On November 13, 2007 he was honored by the WBC as Champ Emeritus during its 45th Annual World Convention held at the Manila Hotel.[11]

On November 18, 2007, the Manila Bulletin Online edition reported a possible bout Manny Pacquiao against Oscar De La Hoya. While it remains to be seen whether it will come to fruition, the prevailing scenario will have Pacquiao battle against David Diaz, the WBC's current reigining lightweight titlist.[12]

On November 20, 2007, Jose Nunez, manager for WBO Super Lightweight Champion Joan Guzman, accused Pacquiao's handler, Bob Arum, of evading a match between the two boxers to protect Pacquiao.[13] Guzman went as far as to directly call-out Pacquiao at the post-fight press conference of the Pacquiao-Barrera rematch, in front of a stunned crowd at the Mandalay Bay Events Center's media room in Las Vegas.[14]

Super featherweight world champion
On March 15, 2008, in a rematch dubbed as "Unfinished Business: Pacquiao-Marquez II", Pacquiao won via a highly disputed split decision over Juan Manuel Marquez. Pacquiao won the World Boxing Council (WBC) and The Ring super featherweight belts, making him the first Asian to win 3 world titles in 3 different weight divisions (Pacquiao is a former WBC Flyweight Champion, IBF Super bantamweight and now WBC Super featherweight). Pacquiao knocked down Marquez at the third round, although Marquez says "That knockdown, he got me cold. But then I adjusted my game plan and I thought from then on I dictated the rest of the fight." Both boxers had bad cuts near their eyes, Pacquiao had his underneath his eye while Marquez had an even worse cut over his eyelid because of an illegal hedbutt provoked by Pacquiao.

The judges scored it 115-112 for Pacquiao, 115-112 for Marquez, and 114-113 for Pacquiao. Marquez expressed disapproval of the result saying that "...I fought a great fight and still feel like I am the champ." Pacquiao, for his part, said that "I don't think so, this business is over," about a third fight. "I'm moving up to 135 pounds."

On March 16 2008, Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer offered Pacquiao the sum of $6 million for a Pacquiao-Marquez rematch, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum said that if that was to happen it would be until fall 2008, although nothing was said for sure. [15]

Manny ( Center ) the New WBC and Ring Magazine Super Feather Champ

Marquez fought gamely ( guba ang nawong ) but the knockdown cost him against Pacquiao

Manny Pacquiao W12 Juan Manuel Marquez... In Las Vegas, Juan Manuel Marquez and Manny Pacquiao battered each other over twelve thrilling and competitive rounds, but thanks to the only knockdown of the fight, it was Pacquiao who emerged with the world super featherweight championship in this see-saw war. The offical scores were 115-112 Marquez, overruled by 115-112 and 114-113 Pacquiao. Compubox credited Marquez with landing 15 more punches than Pacquiao but it was a third-round left to the jaw by Pacquiao that put Marquez down and wound up swaying the decision in Pacquiao's favor. Boxing fans would welcome a third fight, but Pacquiao might move up to 135 to face David Diaz. The decision had to be a hearbreaker for the Marquez family, as Juan Manuel's brother Rafael lost a razor thin decision last month in an even more brutal fight for the 122-pound championship.

One day after weighing in at 130 pounds, Pacquiao entered the ring at a shocking 145. Marquez started off the bout strongly and landed a left-right combination just before the end of the second round that staggered Pacquiao. However, Pacquiao came back the next round  to floor Marquez with a left to the jaw. The two traded furious blows for the final ten seconds of round three, with Pacquiao nearly decking Marquez for a second time. Showing uncharacteristic discipline, Pacquiao did not press for a knockout in the fourth, and Marquez appeared fully recovered after the sixty-second break. Marquez seemed to regain control in the sixth. The seventh round was interrupted by an accidental headbutt that caused a cut outside Marquez's right eye. Marquez boxed brilliantly in the eighth, landing a clean right that opened a cut over Pacquiao's left optic and the Mexican dominated the remainder of the round. The momentum shifted back to Pacquiao in the ninth, as he opened a second cut on Marquez, this one quite serious. The tenth was another Pacquiao round, as the Mexican Assassin staggered Marquez with a wild left. The eleventh was closer, but Marquez likely did enough to pull it out, and he clearly outboxed Pacquiao in the last round. However, the verdict was ultimately decided by the third-round knockdown scored by Pacquiao.
