i intend to call my siblings in bohol but i'll give them time to "recover" first.  so far, only my sister in cebu is updating me.  they're all out of their houses in the subdivision, she ran back briefly inside the house to fetch her mask (she's had her fourth chemo session yesterday).  they're okay, all dogs and cats okay, the glass panes in our library shelves are okay, she said.  thank god.  electricity is zero for the whole city as of now.

Thanks God that Tita A is okay, your pets and your belongings are alright. Let's pray that our family, friends in Bohol are safe from all harm; physical, mental and spiritual.

Prayer in Times of Calamity

Let us pray

God our Father, look kindly on us in distress. May we come nearer to your presence to seek true refuge in this time of calamity. May we continue to trust, to hope and to love, give each other comfort and encouragement. May generous people come to the aid of those who are most in need â€" those who lost loved ones and homes. Let your spirit strengthen us to face all the hardships and difficulties of the present and of the days ahead. We remember the counsel of Jesus, your Son, “Let not your hearts be troubled. Have faith in God and faith in me.” Help us to turn to you always for you know all our needs and you always provide for us.
Amen.

O God, who hast established the earth upon firm foundations, graciously receive the prayers of Thy people: and, having utterly removed the dangers of the shaken earth, turn the terrors of Thy divine wrath into the means of the salvation of mankind; that they who are of the earth, and unto earth shall return, may rejoice to find themselves citizens of heaven by means of a holy life. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Quotei remember some young manilans who are too engrossed with their city, they've never gone south of luzon really, that they believe that anything south of manila is so backward....

Had i been there, I would have told them that the rolling green fields of northern Cebu , and the pristine jungles and fertile basaks of Bohol trumps the disease-infested, squatter-ridden, vice-polluted city that is Manila. They can keep Manila and all that is associated with that city. They do not appreciate the natural beauty of the Philippines and the rich culture of the Provinces.

There is much beauty in other areas as well such as Aklan, Antique, Iloilo, Negros Oriental, Negros Occidental, Leyte, Cebu, Bohol, Sijigor, Mindanao and Palawan.

I guess I'm just a Probinsyano boy at heart. Even here in Chicago, I prefer the rural countryside of southern New Jersey to the hustle and bustle of downtown Chicago. :P

Manila, from my visitations, is quite dirty and unclean compared to Cebu City. If I can bypass Manila when arriving to the Philippines, I would. I don't trust people in Manila nga hilig mo pickpocket and con innocent tourists.

I raise this question to Tita Isles. I read somewhere that the majority of Filipinos are Bisaya. Why is it that the national language is Tagalog and not Cebuano?
#1648
Addendum, of the 4 Luzoners, 3 are from Ilocos speaking region. Only 1 is from Manila. :P

I'm the opposite, I usually tell the Filipinos at the hospital to speak to me either in 1) Bisaya or 2) English. I am up front with them that I don't do Tagalog and my mastery of that dialect is sub par. Mo ingon sila, "Arrogant ka talaga, Doctor." Pero its true tho, just telling the truth.

One nurse who comes from Quezon City said to other nurses, "Oh, Dr. Lorenzo is not the only one. All Cebuanos are like that, they think they are higher than other Filipinos." Na suko gajod ko.

I told them that I grew up in Bohol and Cebu and thus my fluency is primarily in BINISAYANG CEBUANO, and not in Tagalog, which is a very foreign dialect when compared to Bisaya. Second, I told them that Cebuanos and Boholanos ave much to be proud about, we love our province and our region because in comparison to some parts of Luzon, it is safer and far more comfortable. Third, I said that most Cebuanos prefer to speak Cebuanos because in Cebu and Bohol we speak Bisaya and not Tagalog. Tagalog, I told them, is only the mode of communication when we leave Visayas. As for the comment of being "arrogant" i told her that there is nothing arrogant about admitting one's limitation in speaking Tagalog.

I did say to her this, "But you're right tho about Cebuano Doctors. There's a lot of us."

The head of Surgery of my current hospital is a graduate of University of the East, and a Cebuano. The head of Psychiatry is a graduate of Cebu Institute of Medicine and comes from Southern Leyte. These are heads, not staff physicians. Of the 10 Filipino doctors that I know of in our hospital, 6 of them are Bisaya. The rest are from Luzon.

I said to the nurses, "You all should be talking in Bisaya not tagalog. Since most of us physicians are BISAYA."

:P

While pursuing academics, I also wasn't immune to the high school 'crush' bug. hehe.

There was a korean girl whose first name was Prudence. She graduated Valedictorian in my class.

I had the greatest crush for her. In my senior year of high school we both had 3 classes together:

I was very competitive with her. A foolish immature way of dealing with my untold , overbearing affection for this..woman.

October 13, 2013, 10:26:24 PM
Quote from: mg on January 09, 2013, 01:25:00 PM
really Doc? So many tried to refute that there is no life after death, but there are mysterious things that cannot be explained by science. Those who experienced a near death experience mentioned that they all saw light and they felt a different kind of peace within them. I guess that's great! It's hard to have peace within yourself...errr...myself :)

If there is no life after death, then, why fear? right? let's say, hypothetically for the sake of argument, wa la diay life after death. So what? Is it wrong to believe anyways? Does it count against someone? At least during life one had a spiritual, mental coping mechanism of dealing with stress, dealing with anxiety, joy, humility, and had a guide how to live life in the sense of morals and ethos. Kai og mamatay na, wala naman diay. It will just be complete black, nothingness. Devoid of all suffering, questions, feelings. Nothing.

So, the arguments of the anti-theists come to nothing. Their being anti-theists will not save them from the same fate of those who do believe in an afterlife. Kai tanan ra man pod mamatay.  8)

it is , honestly, foolish to carry cash in large amounts. my financial analyst friend, who takes care of my 401k and my multiple cds, told me time and time again, "lorenzo, never ever carry cash in large amounts. the risk of loosing it through theft or inadvertent spending is high. distribute your capital and diversify your portfolio." tinuod gajod, kai og maka kita ka'g kwarta sa pitaka, dali ra intawon i-gastos. pero og wa'y jamo sa pitaka, ma control ra.

ang problema ni napoles sr. is that she tried to abuse the saying, "diversify your portfolio". ka bu anga pod ning bajeha. diversify ijang multi-million dollar portfolio with fake names diay. LOL. kuliretz. ::)

but to be in europe with all that money, if that picture were true... uh, that's unbelievable.  she'd be caught and questioned pronto.

bitaw. carrying cash is so risky nowadays. online banking ra lang, og e-access checking. hahaha! mas safer pa. for me, i don't carry any cash except for an emergency $100 dollar bill. everything else is in my checking card, or my savings card, which is guarded heavily by bank of america's premier monitoring.

simbako ma wa ahoang wallet, pwede ra i tawgon nako ang bank of america nga i-lockdown ahoang account to prevent theft.

the moral that i'm stressing is that there's nothing wrong with being wealthy. its just how one carries his or herself. one can be wealthy and yet at the same time maintain humility about it. this napoles girl should learn a thing or two about humility.

besides, the currency in the picture is euro, not the u.s. dollar, and the u.s. is where she is.

she may have gone to europe for vacations; that would be peanuts for her.  but to be in europe with all that money, if that picture were true... uh, that's unbelievable.  she'd be caught and questioned pronto.  her credit cards/expense accounts can make the rounds in all the expensive places in europe.  no lugging of heavy cash was necessary.  that would be too plebeian for her.

indeed. this reminds me of a friend back in medical school. where money isn't an issue. i remember the time when i was a student, i had to struggle with money and save my pocket money kai most of my money (and my parents') went to my tuition-- mag spend lang ko og $100 a week for personal use. limited kaajo. most of my friends back then all were like this, mag tinihik intawon kai wa jamo'y kwarts.

then one day after post-exams, a friend whose comes from a very, very wealthy filipino family drove up with his rolls royce (his dad gave it to him as present after getting admitted to medical school). he took us all out (all 10 of us) to a very fine (very tasty) restaurant. we all wanted to chip in for the bill but dili sija gosto. he insisted he will pay. pero ako, i felt so bad. si i tried putting in some money, na suko sija because i insisted. he said to us, "most likely you guys couldnt afford the bill anyways, so just let me pay it..."

the total came up to $3500.

he just swiped it with his card, and voila.

after that time tho, i never let him pay for me. na luod ko sa ijang comment.

i had a classmate in medical school whose father was a friend of marcos. his parents came to the united states in the early 70's. when i went to visit this guy several years ago (while we were still 1st year medical students proper), his parents' driveway were filled with beautiful automobiles. 2 Bentleys, and 3 rolls royce. His father is multimillionaire who owns a very large hedge funds investment firm, his 3 siblings are both physicians. apparently, his father was given a despedida party by marcos back in the 70s (as they were family friends). with a paycheck. his father used this to cement his life in the united states; and at the same time, maintain their luxurious lifestyle that they had lived in the Philippines.

they're quite wealthy, indeed. his family owns a large medical hospital in California with many satellite clinics; not including their hedge fund investment firm that has some hundred million dollars invested.

my friend doesn't even practice medicine nowadays, he main assists his father in the business. they're investing actively in the philippines right now; emerging market daw that's very lucrative.

last year my friend asked me to join him. with a very, very, very tempting financial offer. i turned it down. not my cup of tea. :P

afterall, in the end, money's not everything.
