HONG KONG -- Melba A. Pardua, a domestic helper, was supposed to leave Thursday for her annual vacation to the Philippines.

The 50-year-old mother of four and another Filipino maid will be coming home in sealed lead coffins after they allegedly took their own lives last Monday by jumping out of the apartment buildings of their employers.

Pardua and 31-year-old Carolina A. Dacquil, both from Isabela province, were found dead on Monday morning outside the apartment buildings in North Point and Aberdeen districts, respectively, said Erlinda Albay, officer-in-charge of the assistance to nationals section of the Philippine Consulate here.

“There were no signs of foul play but the police investigation continues. No suicide letters were found,” Albay said.

Newspaper reports here said police suspect that the Filipinas committed suicide because of financial difficulties.

Pardua, who had been working for her Hong Kong employer for the past 13 years, was found dead at around 11:30 a.m. after she allegedly jumped out of the 10th floor apartment at North Point.

“Her employer was crying when she came here to report the incident. She said they were looking for her on Monday morning and they thought she just went out to buy a newspaper,” Albay said.

The Chinese employer said that Pardua did not mention any problem that she might have been having and that she was satisfied with the Filipina’s work. She said Pardua was on her seventh contract with the family.

Three of Pardua’s four children have already graduated from college while the youngest is studying to be a nurse.

According to Albay, Pardua’s niece and a friend have said that Pardua was noticeably depressed last Sunday, “that she was not herself.”

“The only thing her friend remembered was that Pardua was hoping that she could bring home more gifts when she goes on her regular vacation beginning [Thursday]. They were supposed to go home together,” Albay added.

Pardua’s remains will be flown to Tuguegarao on April 15 once all the necessary documents are ready.

Also on Monday, Dacquil was found dead at about 6 a. m. She had apparently jumped out of the 9th-floor apartment of her employer in Aberdeen.

Dacquil’s employers also said they did not know of any problem that the Filipina could have been undergoing. They said she had been working for them only since January 2007 although she had been in Hong Kong for seven years before that.

While there was still no clear evidence showing that financial problems led the two women to commit suicide, Albay said that this has cropped up in other suicide cases involving Filipinos working as domestic helpers in Hong Kong.

Some migrant organizations estimate that up to 90 percent of the estimated 125,000 Filipino domestics in Hong Kong are in debt because they borrowed money to come here or they took out loans to send cash to their families back in the Philippines.

MANILA, Philippines -- US ambassador to the Philippines Kristie Kenney on Wednesday pledged American rice exports to Manila to help ensure supplies amid soaring prices of the key Filipino staple.

"We will always make our supplies available for export if the Philippines needs rice supplies," the envoy told reporters on the sidelines of a public ceremony commemorating the World War II dead near Manila.

Manila, the world's top rice importer, has announced plans to import up to 2.7 million tons this year even as prices soared to near-historical levels amid tight global supplies.

Initial imports this year have come from Thailand, Vietnam and Pakistan.

The United States exported 4.6 million tons of rice in 2004, according to the latest available figures provided by the Philippines-based International Rice Research Institute.

Kenney said Washington was also helping Manila out through rice research, "so yes, you can count on us."

President Gloria Arroyo, speaking at the same ceremony, said "the global rise in the price of basic commodities like fuel and rice is putting a strain on all hardworking Filipinos."

She pledged to ensure adequate supply of the cereal.

Analysts have warned major rice importers that soaring prices could lead to social unrest and pose security problems. The Philippine government has deployed police and military to crack down on rice hoarders.

MT. SAMAT, Bataan -- Saying what the people need are "food on the table, not politics on the frontpage," President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo lashed out at her critics for continuing to engage in investigation and political jockeying even amid the fuel and rice price spike.

Instead, Arroyo said now was the time for political leaders to "join hands and to close ranks" to meet the challenge.

“This is no time for political posturing. We need food on the table, not headlines in the newspapers. We must invest not just investigate. It’s time for action, not political wrangling,” she said in a speech at the commemoration of the “Araw ng Kagitingan” (Day of Valor) here.

Arroyo said the people wanted the government to focus on "positive agenda" instead of "political jockeying."

"No endless investigation will put rice on the table, a computer in classroom or health clinic in a barangay (village). We must put the interest of the individual Filipino above else and make sure to reassure our people that we are providing a steady and strong leadership at this critical point in time. To repeat, we must put rice on the table and not politics on the front page," she said.

Arroyo said that measures were in place to deal with the fuel and food price spike. But at the same time, Arroyo said the government would not lose sight on improving education, the economy, and the environment while it dealt with the rice problem.

Several senators vowed to continue with its investigation of the national broadband network scandal that implicated the President and First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo.

The rice problem and the swine fund scam are also among the issues lawmakers said they also wanted investigated.

On Tuesday, a University of the Philippines professor said the government could just be projecting the rice crisis to divert attention from corruption issues.

Standing at 23 inches tall â€" and weighing in at just 11 pounds â€" Jyoti Amge is no ordinary teenager. In fact, the 14-year-old is the world's smallest girl, according to the Indian Book of Records.

Amge has a form of dwarfism called achondroplasia, which affects an estimated one out of every 25,000 births and occurs in all races.

But, her tiny size hasn't hampered her spirit one bit.

The teenager told Britain's Sunday Mirror that she enjoys the celebrity status her height has brought her.

"I am proud of being small. I love the attention I get," she told the paper.

"I'm just the same as other people. I eat like you, dream like you. I don't feel any different."

According to the Mayo Clinic, about 70 percent of all people with dwarfism have achondroplasia, which causes disproportionately short stature.

This disorder usually results in:

â€" An adult height of approximately 4 feet

â€" An average-size trunk

â€" Short arms and legs, with particularly short upper arms and legs

â€" Short fingers, often with a wide separation between the middle and ring fingers

â€" Limited mobility at the elbows

â€" A disproportionately large head, with a prominent forehead and flattened bridge of the nose

Despite all this, Amge is just like any other teenager.

She loves listening to music, watching DVDs and attends the local high school in her town of Nagpur, India, where she sits side-by-side with classmates of her own age.

"When Jyoti was born, she seemed quite normal," her mother, Ranjana, 45, told the Sunday Mirror.

"We came to know about her disorder when she was five. We consulted a specialist and he said she will be this size all of her life. Jyoti is small, yet cute, and we love her very much."

As for the future â€" it’s wide open.

For the most part, people with this form of dwarfism have normal intelligence and lifespan â€" and this very ambitious teenager intends to take full advantage of all her talents.

"I would like to work in a big city like Mumbai, act in films and travel to London and America," she said.

She has even recently recorded an album with her favorite Indian pop star, Mike Singh, according to the report.

For Juan Manuel Marquez: “It’s no longer about money. It’s about Manny.”

Stressing he’s not begging for a rematch with Filipino tormentor and new World Boxing Council super featherweight champ Manny Pacquiao, Marquez said he feels it’s the Filipino ring icon’s obligation to grant him a third fight owing to the close results of the first two.

The first fight in 2004 ended in a draw while Pacquiao took the title away from Marquez by split decision on March 15 in Las Vegas.

Interviewed by GMA-7 Saksi’s Chino Trinidad before he and his party left for Las Vegas last night, Marquez said the people deserve Pacquiao-Marquez III.

And Marquez said he’s willing to accept any amount under any terms and conditions just to have another crack at Pacquiao, who, however, is bent on moving up in weight to challenge WBC lightweight titlist David Diaz on June 28 also in Las Vegas.

Marquez, however, clarified that he doesn’t consider Pacquiao a personal enemy.

Apart from trying to provoke Pacquiao into giving him a rematch, Marquez was also supposed to do a commercial with Pacquiao.

Last-minute hitches, however, forced its cancellation Tuesday, according to sources.

Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum is said to be disappointed by the attempt of Marquez and his handlers in trying to forge another fight with Pacquiao.

“It borders a little on the pathetic,” Arum told Michael Marley of Boxingconfidential.com.

SAINI SUNPURA, India (AP) -- A baby with two faces was born in a northern Indian village, where she is doing well and is being worshipped as the reincarnation of a Hindu goddess, her father said Tuesday.

The baby, Lali, apparently has an extremely rare condition known as craniofacial duplication, where a single head has two faces. Except for her ears, all of Lali's facial features are duplicated -- she has two noses, two pairs of lips and two pairs of eyes.

"My daughter is fine -- like any other child," said Vinod Singh, 23, a poor farm worker.

Lali has caused a sensation in the dusty village of Saini Sunpura, 25 miles east of New Delhi. When she left the hospital, eight hours after a normal delivery on March 11, she was swarmed by villagers, said Sabir Ali, the director of Saifi Hospital.

"She drinks milk from her two mouths and opens and shuts all the four eyes at one time," Ali said.

Rural India is deeply superstitious and the little girl is being hailed as a return of the Hindu goddess of valor, Durga, a fiery deity traditionally depicted with three eyes and many arms.

Up to 100 people have been visiting Lali at her home every day to touch her feet out of respect, offer money and receive blessings, Singh told AP.

"Lali is God's gift to us," said Jaipal Singh, a member of the local village council. "She has brought fame to our village."

Village chief Daulat Ram said he planned to build a temple to Durga in the village.

"I am writing to the state government to provide money to build the temple and help the parents look after their daughter," Ram said.

Lali's condition is often linked to serious health complications, but the doctor said she was doing well.

"She is leading a normal life with no breathing difficulties," said Ali, adding that he saw no need for surgery.

Lali's parents were married in February 2007. Lali is their first child.

Singh said he took his daughter to a hospital in New Delhi where doctors suggested a CT scan to determine whether her internal organs were normal, but Singh said he felt it was unnecessary.

"I don't feel the need of that at this stage as my daughter is behaving like a normal child, posing no problems," he said.

Here’s good news for Filipino domestic HERE’S helpers in Hong Kong.

Malacañang on Tuesday announced that the domestic helpers could expect an increase in their monthly wages in June.

Acting Labor Secretary Marianito Roque, who accompanied President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in her working visit to the former British Crown colony last week, said that Hong Kong would announce a “moderate” increase in the wage rates of foreign domestic workers not later than June this year.

Roque met with Permanent Secretary for Labour & Welfare Matthew Cheung of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region at the end of the three-day visit.

Roque explained that Hong Kong officials would just be able to determine the amount of the increase of the salaries of foreign maids upon the release of statistical data on consumer price index, gross domestic product and other economic indicators at the end of the month.

But Roque said that Cheung would inform the Philippine Consulate in Hong Kong about the wage increase a few minutes before government officials announce the good news.

As of 2007, he said there are 125,000 Filipino workers in the former Crown Colony representing 50 percent of the household workers population. The other half are Indonesian workers.

The present salary of foreign domestic workers is Hk$3,480 a month, which is HK$270 less than the salary in 2003.

BAIKONUR, Kazakhstan -- South Korea's first astronaut Yi So-Yeon blasted off into space on Tuesday, prompting her mother, apparently overwhelmed by the occasion, to scream and fall to the ground.

In another historic first, one of her fellow cosmonauts, Sergei Volkov, followed in the footsteps of his father, celebrated Russian cosmonaut Alexander Volkov, the two forming the first space dynasty.

As the Russian Soyuz rocket soared into the clear blue sky from Baikonur cosmodrome, the Korean's mother, Jung Kum Sun, let out a piercing scream and fell to the ground before being led away by doctors.

Korean space officials said the 57-year-old later recovered, explaining that she had collapsed briefly because she was "very worried."

A few minutes after the launch, Russian space control confirmed the Soyuz spacecraft with three astronauts on board had successfully reached orbit.

"It's amazing! It's fantastic!" Sim Eunsup, director of the Korean Aerospace Research Institute, said as he walked away from a viewing platform.

Sim has said he would like Yi's historic flight to signal the start of a manned space program for the Asian economic giant.

The spacecraft was to spend two days travelling to the International Space Station, where Yi was to live with members of the orbiting station's permanent crew before returning to Earth on April 19.

Earlier she said she hoped North Koreans would also share in her "triumph" and that she could encourage reconciliation between the divided halves of the Korean peninsula.

Yi and the two Russian cosmonauts took off from the same launch pad in the arid Kazakh steppes where Yury Gagarin, the first human in space, began his famous flight in 1961.

Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space, was one of several former cosmonauts who attended Tuesday's launch. "I'm happy for her," she said.

Mission captain Sergei Volkov, making his debut flight, is the son of cosmonaut Alexander Volkov, who blasted off when the Soviet Union still existed to return to Earth only after its December 1991 collapse.

"It's been difficult for me as a father," said Alexander Volkov, who wore his Hero of the Soviet Union medal pinned on a dark suit, ahead of the launch.

"I know what he's going to face and I know how tough it is.... I'm worried of course but I'm very proud that my son has chosen to be a cosmonaut."

The third crew member, Oleg Kononenko, is also a first-timer in space.

The Baikonur cosmodrome was built in Kazakhstan in the Soviet era and is now leased by Kazakh authorities to Russia. It is set in a vast plain dotted with debris from decades of space exploration.

After docking with the International Space Station, Yi has said she will celebrate the anniversary of Gagarin's launch on April 12 with a spicy Korean feast and a surprise song for fellow crew members.

"I hope all the Russian guys and the American guys like my singing," Yi joked with reporters last month at the training base in Star City outside Moscow where cosmonauts undergo gruelling tests for space flight.

At a press conference on the eve of her mission, Yi smiled and jumped up and down, waving to friends from behind a glass wall intended to protect astronauts from infection, as stern-faced Russian officials looked on.

Asked what her first reaction would be on reaching the ISS, Yi said she would cry out: "Like, wow!"

Korea will pay some $20 million (12.8 million euros) for her mission.

South Korea has built its own rocket launch pad and is due to send up a satellite later this year. Officials said government funding for the space program amounted to around 300 million dollars last year.

A biosystems engineer, Yi will conduct 14 scientific experiments in space and said she hoped to encourage more Koreans to fly into space.

She was selected last month after engineering student Ko San, who had been due to fly for South Korea, was taken off the mission for breaching rules by taking manuals out of the high-security Star City training base.

The publisher and columnist of a small community newspaper in the Philippines was gunned down in the latest in a string of attacks against the media, police said Tuesday.

A gunman riding a motorcycle shot Benefredo Acabal at close range in a busy street in suburban Pasig City near Manila late Monday.

He was rushed to hospital, but died from five gunshot wounds to the body, police said.

It was not immediately clear whether Acabal was shot because of his work as publisher and columnist of a small community paper identified by police as the Pilipino Newsmen, based in Cavite province just south of the capital.

The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists as well as the French Reporters Without Borders have both branded the Philippines as the second most dangerous place for working journalists outside of Iraq.

At least three journalists were killed in the Philippines last year, while 12 were killed in 2006.

Yes, former president Joseph Estrada has a “50-50 chance” of running in the 2010 presidential elections, but only as a last resort, a spokesman for the opposition said Tuesday.

Lawyer Adel Tamano said that Estrada's claim of possibly running again as president was a message “for the opposition to come together.”

“[Estrada's] claim is consistent with the clamor of the people,” he said.

Meanwhile, Senator Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III said he was unsure whether it was legally permissible for Estrada to run for re-election.

“The Constitution only allows for the President to be elected once,' he said.

However, Tamano said that legal issues were a novelty and if Estrada would run, there would be a great chance that he would win.

“A fractured opposition leads to a successful administration,” Aquino said.

Tamano also said that opposition members would have to unite, citing the 2004 elections when the opposition was divided, enabling the administration to succeed.

SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- A shark attacked and killed a 16-year-old boy Tuesday while he and a friend were bodyboarding off Australia's eastern coast, officials said.

Peter Edmonds was about 50 yards from shore when the shark attacked around 8 a.m., lifeguard spokesman Stephen Leahy said.

Edmonds suffered two large bites, one to the leg and one to the body. He died of extreme blood loss while lifeguards and paramedics tried to save him.

It was the first fatal shark attack in Australia in two years.

All nearby beaches were closed as a precaution, and crews were looking for the shark in the waters off Ballina, about 400 miles north of Sydney, Leahy said.

Edmonds' bodyboarding friend, Brock Mathew, was leaving the water when he looked back and saw Edmonds "in a bit of trouble" and swam back to his friend, who he thought was trying to catch a wave.

Mathew said he saw a "big, gray shadow" pass by him as he paddled to his friend, who was by then face down in the water.

"I thought he was only joking, so I went over to him and as I flipped him over I saw his leg," said Mathew, who dragged his friend to shore and tried with lifeguards to resuscitate him.

"He didn't make one noise," Mathew said.

Edmonds' 20-year-old sister, Kylie, said her parents were numb from the sudden loss.

"They lost their baby -- what more can you say? The only boy in the family," she said.

Leahy said there had been three shark alarms sounded in Ballina in recent months.

Heavy rainfall over the past two days had made the area more susceptible to attacks, because sharks congregate near river mouths to feed in rainy weather. The beach where the attack occurred is just north of the Richmond River estuary.

It wasn't known what type of shark attacked the teenager, though residents said bull sharks had been spotted in recent days.

Detective Inspector Steve Clark said Mathew would be considered for a bravery medal for going back into the water to rescue his friend despite seeing the shark nearby.

There are about 15 shark attacks a year in Australian waters -- one of the highest rates in the world -- but on average just over one attack per year is fatal.

In January, a fisherman survived a bite by a shark he had reeled onto his boat deck. In December, a surfer was attacked by a shark at a beach north of Sydney, but his injuries were not life-threatening.

Additional Info.

A Japanese man who was arrested over the death of a Filipina woman allegedly chopped up her body and cleaned the pieces in a washing machine, reports said Tuesday.

Media accounts also revealed that Hiroshi Nozaki, 48, had served prison time for a similar case of mutilating the body of a Filipina bar hostess in 2000 but was set free.

Police on Sunday arrested Nozaki on charges of mutilating the body of 22-year-old Honiefaith Ratilla Kamiosawa, who worked in Tokyo's Roppongi entertainment district.

The private Asahi network said Nozaki cut her body into pieces in his bathroom and "washed them elaborately in a laundry machine" to make them lighter or to make it difficult to trace the cause of death.

Little blood remained in the recovered body parts, although blood was found in the washing machine, the Asahi and other networks said.

Police declined comment on the reports. They earlier said that the victim's co-worker, who shared an apartment with her and Nozaki, saw him carrying a body part.

Nozaki was taken into custody after trying to commit suicide on a street in a Tokyo suburb by slitting his wrist.

Investigators found a scribbled note and a key he was carrying to a baggage locker where they found a body part.

The victim was reportedly cut into more than 10 pieces that were put into plastic bags inside a suitcase in a locker, but her head had not yet been found.

In the earlier crime in 2000, Nozaki burned the body parts and flushed them down a toilet, the Sports Nippon tabloid said.

The victim's cause of death was never established and he was convicted only of charges of destroying a body. He served three-and-a-half years in prison before being released, the newspaper said.

Roppongi is known for its sleazy nightlife including bars with foreign hostesses.

In the best-known crime case in Roppongi, 21-year-old British bar hostess Lucie Blackman vanished in 2000, with her dismembered body recovered seven months later.

Convicted serial rapist Joji Obara, a wealthy businessman, was acquitted last year over Blackman's death for lack of evidence but is back on trial in an appeal.
