Catigbian Magic Nature Park in Haguilanan, Catigbian, Bohol is one place I wanted to go back to... very unique and different from all other popular tourism spots in Bohol. I was there when it all started in 2006. Lami na siguro karon... but it's still barely known to many visitors. Besides, there are many "unknown" place very unique to Catigbian: waterfalls, multi caverns, Behind The Cloud, part of Chocolate Hills, etc.
gaw father. wala nay ayo kay wala na kaayo nag atiman. nagkabuwag man to kuno ang foriegner ug ang iyang asawa nga taga haguilanan. nakaanha sad ko diha sa pagsugod pa nila ug na amaze sad ko sa ilang place labina kung moagi ka atong murag maze nga bungtod pasaka sa taas. sayang lagi to kay akong gipangutana tong tag-iya, daghan to sila ug plano ato like cable cars from one mountain to other mountain. conference halls, swimming pools with slides. wala jud to na realize.

Balilihan is a great example. You can still see the more than century old trees towering in the town's plaza. Nobody dared to cut it off even if there incidents past that some of those trees stumbled to ground due to natural causes. It's really hazardous because those trees may go down at any given time without warning. However, people still value it as heritage and treasure.

Driving to work this morning on Roxas Blvd. I look over to my left and there's this woman in a Honda City doing 80 kph with her face up next to her rear view mirror putting on her eyeliner. good news. kalooy sa mga pulis lupig lang ug barangay tanod. anyways, kudos to the barangay tanods of bantolinao, antequera. looks like the suspect didn't went anywhere as earlier reported. he just stayed and hide in bantolinao contrary to reports that he was spotted in several towns and even suspected of entering houses and several reported attempted rapes. im not trying to demean the police force but i think there is a need for them to augment their intelligence gathering at the same time they should be always mobile. if there was a manhunt it should have been intensified. it took several months and weeks before this man fell to the local authorities. sad to say it's not police but to the volunteer tanods.

United agrees to buy Continental for $3B-plus in stock, would be world's largest airline.

United Airlines has agreed to buy Continental in a $3 billion-plus deal that would create the world's largest carrier with a commanding position in several top U.S. cities.

The new United would surpass Delta Air Lines in size, which should help it attract more high-fare business travelers. It will fly to 370 destinations in 59 countries.

Although the United name will live on, and the company will stay in Chicago, it will be run by current Continental CEO Jeffery Smisek. United CEO Glenn Tilton, a longtime advocate of consolidation in the airline industry, will be non-executive chairman for up to two years before Smisek adds the chairman title.

The new parent company will be called United Continental Holdings Inc., and have about $29 billion in annual revenue based on 2009 results and $7.4 billion in unrestricted cash. The airlines said combining would save them $1 billion to $1.2 billion a year by 2013, including between $800 million and $900 million in new yearly revenue.

The deal would create a giant with major hubs in key domestic markets including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston and San Francisco and an international network stretching from Shanghai to South America.

It will leave three big U.S. airlines with major international routes -- the new United, Delta and American Airlines, with US Airways a distant fourth.

United is the nation's third-largest carrier by traffic, while Continental Airlines Inc., in Houston, is No. 4.

Shares of both companies rose in morning trading Monday. United parent UAL Corp. shares rose 62 cents, or 2.9 percent, to $22.22, while Continental shares rose 63 cents, or 2.8 percent, to $22.98.

Wall Street has pushed consolidation as a way to let airlines raise fares by reducing the number of flights and seats.

Smisek and Tilton said in an interview that the deal won't necessarily mean higher fares, but antitrust regulators are expected to scrutinize the transaction.

Smisek said that the companies don't assume they can boost prices, but that with a bigger network they can attract more high-paying corporate travelers.

Two years ago, Continental walked away from a deal with United at the last moment. Smisek said times have changed since 2008, when both airlines were low on cash and facing record fuel costs.

"Both carriers are performing better than they have been for the past couple of years," he said. "The economy is on an upswing. Fuel prices, although high, are manageable."

Owners of United parent UAL Corp. will hold 55 percent of the combined company, with Continental shareholders owning the rest. Continental shareholders will get 1.05 UAL shares in exchange for each one of theirs.

Although United is buying Continental, the two carriers are similar in size. Based on Friday's closing stock prices, UAL's had a stock market value of $3.6 billion, while Continental's was $3.1 billion.

As for keeping the United name, Tilton told the AP, "The benefit obviously of United Airlines is familiarity in the Pacific and international markets, where it has been a presence longer than Continental."

The companies expect to close the deal in the fourth quarter, with approval needed from shareholders and regulators.

Labor issues have often been messy in airline consolidation. Smisek and Tilton said they had briefed their unions on the deal. Both companies said their boards had approved the transaction unanimously, which would include a labor representative on the UAL board.

Pilots at both airlines are represented by the Air Line Pilots Association. People briefed on the negotiations said the two groups have not started negotiations on a joint contract.

The machinists' union, which represents 16,000 workers at United and more than 10,000 Continental employees, said it was concerned about the impact of the deal on pensions, benefits and job security.

Both United and Continental have been losing money first due to higher fuel costs, then a recession. Last year, UAL lost $651 million while Continental lost $282 million. Revenue plunged 19.1 percent at UAL and 17.4 percent at Continental.

They have eliminated flights to meet the new, lower demand -- United cut capacity 7.4 percent last year, and Continental shrank 5.2 percent.

Jokes and Humor / Sperm count
April 30, 2010, 11:56:57 PM
An 85-year-old man went to his doctor's office to get a sperm count. The doctor gave the man a jar and said, "Take this jar home and bring back a semen sample tomorrow."  The next day the 85-year-old man reappeared at the doctor's office and gave him the jar, which was as clean and empty as on the previous day. The doctor asked what happened and the man explained:

Well, doc, it's like this - First I tried with my right hand, but nothing. Then I tried with my left hand, but still nothing. Then I asked my wife for help. She tried with her right hand, then her left, still nothing. She tried with her mouth, first with the teeth in, then with her teeth out, and still nothing.

We even called up Arlene, the lady next door and she tried too, first with both hands, then an armpit and she even tried squeezin' it between her knees, but still nothing."

The doctor was shocked! "You asked your neighbor?" The old man replied, "Yep, and no matter what we tried, we still couldn't get the jar open."

Hahahahaha - What were you thinking?

Twenty-one-year-old Redwood City, California, resident Brian J. Hogan, the man identified by Wired.com as the guy who found â€" and later sold â€" Apple's missing iPhone in a bar last month, has a message for Apple, the engineer who originally lost the precious gadget, and the tech world at large: Sorry about that.

Following a trail of "clues" on social-networking sites and confirming his ID with a source "involved in the iPhone find," Wired named Hogan on Thursday as the bar patron who made off with Apple's top-secret iPhone prototype and then sold it to Gizmodo for $5,000 after an Apple software engineer left the precious phone on a bar stool.

Up until now, Hogan's identity has been a mystery to the public, but the 21-year-old college student (or at least, he was a college student as of 2008) may have sensed that he was in trouble after all the hoopla over Gizmodo's gigantic iPhone scoop last week and the subsequent fallout, including a raid on Gizmodo editor Jason Chen's house by San Mateo sheriff's deputies armed with a search warrant.

Hogan has now lawyered up, and in a statement released through his attorney, the young man says he "regrets his mistake in not doing more to return the phone," and that he thought his $5,000 deal with Gizmodo was only "so that they could review the phone," Wired reports.

According to Hogan's attorney's statement, Hogan didn't see the lost iPhone until another patron at the Redwood City bar came up and asked him if it was his; Hogan apparently then asked a few other patrons if they'd lost the device before heading out, iPhone in hand, according to Wired.

Initial reports had it that the man who'd taken the iPhone tried repeatedly to call the Apple Care support line to return the phone, but according to the statement in the Wired story, Hogan never personally called Apple, although a friend of his offered to. The owners of the bar where the iPhone was lost also told Wired that Hogan never bothered to call them about the lost hardware, although the anguished Apple engineer who mislaid the iPhone "returned several times" to see if it had turned up.

Meanwhile, CNET is reporting that Hogan had help in finding a buyer for the lost iPhone. The "go-between," according to CNET: 27-year-old Sage Robert Wallower, a UC Berkeley student who "contacted technology sites" about the handset. Wallower told CNET that he "didn't see it or touch it in any manner" but knows "who found it," adding, "I need to speak to a lawyer ... I think I have said too much."

No one has been charged yet in the case of the lost iPhone, but a deputy district attorney for San Mateo County tells Wired that Hogan is "very definitely ... being looked at as a suspect in theft." (In California, finding a piece of lost property isn't a case of "finders keepers"; if you find a lost item and keep it without making "reasonable" efforts to find the real owner, you could be charged with a crime.)

Gizmodo's Jason Chen also has yet to be charged; law-enforcement officials have reportedly said they'll hold off on searching the computers and servers seized from Chen's house until they decide whether California's shield law for journalists applies to him.

1 Bob Smith, my assistant programmer, can always be found

3 wasting company time talking to colleagues. Bob never
4 thinks twice about assisting fellow employees, and always
5 finishes given assignments on time. Often he takes extended

7 breaks. Bob is a dedicated individual who has absolutely no
8 vanity in spite of his high accomplishments and profound

SPOKANE, Wash. â€" Two living specimens of the fabled giant Palouse earthworm have been captured for the first time in two decades in what represents a significant discovery of a creature that has achieved a mythic status in the area.

The giant Palouse earthworm has fascinated scientists for decades after long being written off as an extinct creature. Reports suggested that the worms had a penchant for spitting and smelled like lilies, further enhancing the myth of the earthworm in the agricultural Palouse region on the Washington-Idaho border.

"It's a good day for the worm," said University of Idaho soil scientist Jodi Johnson-Maynard in Moscow, Idaho, who has been leading the search

The recent discovery of the worms appeared to dispel the myth about the creature's appearance. They don't spit, or smell like lilies, and aren't even that giant.

"One of my colleagues suggested we rename it the 'larger-than average Palouse earthworm,'" Johnson-Maynard said when the find was announced Tuesday.

While they had been thought to grow to 3 feet long, the adult worm measured about 10 or 12 inches fully extended, while the juvenile was 6 or 7 inches.

The worms were translucent, allowing internal organs to appear. They had pink heads and bulbous tails. The adult had a yellowish band behind the head.

The specimens were found March 27 by Shan Xu, an Idaho student, and Karl Umiker, a research support scientist. They also found three earthworm cocoons, two of which have hatched and appear to also be giant Palouse earthworms.

The Palouse earthworm was first reported to the scientific world in an 1897 article in The American Naturalist by Frank Smith. Smith's work was based on four samples sent to him by R.W. Doane of Washington State University in Pullman.

Massive agricultural development soon consumed nearly all of the unique Palouse Prairie â€" a seemingly endless ocean of steep, silty dunes â€" and appeared to deal a fatal blow to the worm.

In the late 1980s, University of Idaho scientist James Johnson found two worms in a second-growth forest near Moscow. They were the last living specimens found until now.

The worms were considered extinct until 2005, when Idaho graduate student Yaniria Sanchez-de Leon found a specimen near Albion, Wash. But that worm had been cut nearly in half as she was digging a hole.

After the 2005 discovery, conservation groups petitioned the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to protect the worm as an endangered species, citing as proof the lack of sightings. But the agency said there simply was not enough scientific information to merit a listing.

Most earthworms found in the Northwest originated in Europe, arriving on plants or in soil shipped to the New World. The giant Palouse earthworm is one of the few native species.

"The most important thing about this to me is this is the first time we have an intact, live specimen that we can get DNA from and make a taxonomic description to the species level," Johnson-Maynard said.

Last month's discoveries followed the development of a new high-tech worm shocking probe that was stuck in the ground and used electricity to push worms toward the surface. The probe was deployed starting last summer, and proved far less lethal to worms than sticking shovels into the ground to dig them up, Johnson-Maynard said.

The adult was killed so that University of Kansas earthworm expert Sam James could dissect it identify and it as a GPE. James made that determination on April 16.

The juvenile remains alive at the University of Idaho, where its DNA will be used to identify new specimens.

Gibo resigned as Chairman of Lakas-Kampi not as President. His reason is to focus more on his candidacy because there are so many problems being faced by the party that all started in the maguindanao massacre where one of it's strongest allies the ampatuans were involved.

Aumentado is still the regional chairman of Lakas.

CHICAGO - Four common bad habits combined â€" smoking, drinking too much, inactivity and poor diet â€" can age you by 12 years, sobering new research suggests.

The findings are from a study that tracked nearly 5,000 British adults for 20 years, and they highlight yet another reason to adopt a healthier lifestyle.

Overall, 314 people studied had all four unhealthy behaviors. Among them, 91 died during the study, or 29 percent. Among the 387 healthiest people with none of the four habits, only 32 died, or about 8 percent.

The risky behaviors were: smoking tobacco; downing more than three alcoholic drinks per day for men and more than two daily for women; getting less than two hours of physical activity per week; and eating fruits and vegetables fewer than three times daily.

These habits combined substantially increased the risk of death and made people who engaged in them seem 12 years older than people in the healthiest group, said lead researcher Elisabeth Kvaavik of the University of Oslo.

The study appears in Monday's Archives of Internal Medicine.

The healthiest group included never-smokers and those who had quit; teetotalers, women who had fewer than two drinks daily and men who had fewer than three; those who got at least two hours of physical activity weekly; and those who ate fruits and vegetables at least three times daily.

"You don't need to be extreme" to be in the healthy category, Kvaavik said. "These behaviors add up, so together it's quite good. It should be possible for most people to manage to do it."

For example, one carrot, one apple and a glass of orange juice would suffice for the fruit and vegetable cutoffs in the study, Kvaavik said, noting that the amounts are pretty modest and less strict than many guidelines.

The U.S. government generally recommends at least 4 cups of fruits or vegetables daily for adults, depending on age and activity level; and about 2 1/2 hours of exercise weekly.

Study participants were 4,886 British adults aged 18 and older, or 44 years old on average. They were randomly selected from participants in a separate nationwide British health survey. Study subjects were asked about various lifestyle habits only once, a potential limitation, but Kvaavik said those habits tend to be fairly stable in adulthood.

Death certificates were checked for the next 20 years. The most common causes of death included heart disease and cancer, both related to unhealthy lifestyles.

Kvaavik said her results are applicable to other westernized nations including the United States.

June Stevens, a University of North Carolina public health researcher, said the results are in line with previous studies that examined the combined effects of health-related habits on longevity.

The findings don't mean that everyone who maintains a healthy lifestyle will live longer than those who don't, but it will increase the odds, Stevens said.

In 1961, when Liberal Party standard-bearer Diosdado Macapagal was in the midst of a victorious presidential campaign, today’s presidential aspirant Manny Villar Jr. was 11 years old and living with his large extended family in a rented three-story corner house along Tondo’s main tree-lined boulevard, Moriones Street.

Villar’s father, Manuel Sr., was a US-educated Philippine government budget officer and his mother was an enterprising fish dealer, one of a privileged few with a choice stall in Divisoria market, one of Manila’s busiest.

By that year, Evelyn Villar, Manny’s aunt and Manuel Sr.’s sister, had already been a leading lady in movies produced by the major studio LVN. Evelyn hung out with Rosa Rosal, Delia Razon and other LVN stars at the time, and would occasionally sleep over in the Moriones house.

It was also a time when, candidate Manny Villar would like voters to believe, his family was almost desperately poor, judging from the songs, rhetoric and political ads that have formed the main narrative of his political campaign.

"Ako, noong first 11 years of my life, talagang squatter kami noong araw. Lahat, dinaanan ko yan," the senator said two weeks ago.

In 1962, as Villar was turning 13, his younger brother Danny, then three, died of leukemia, after his family had already transferred from Moriones to the upscale San Rafael Village in North Balut, Tondo (San Rafael village spans the border between Tondo and Navotas).

But in a political ad that has stopped airing, Villar claimed that his family was so poor then that they couldn’t buy the medicines that could have saved his brother’s life.

A studio photograph taken of the Villar family when the future senator, standing right back row, was in college. The young child in the front is actually the deceased Daniel Villar, who was not alive when the original photo was taken. It was only recently that the Villar family had the photo digitally altered to include Danny's image. "Gusto kasi namin kumpleto kami sa photo," said Vicky Villar- Divinagracia. Danny died before the age of four in 1962.His critics and political opponents have since challenged the veracity of his claims to childhood destitution, leading Villar and his allies to back track a bit and halt some of the more questionable ads proclaiming his pauper roots, including the now famous music ad about swimming in a sea of garbage and spending Christmas on the streets, as if Villar and his siblings were urchins caroling to motorists.

The argument about the Villar family’s true economic status has become one of the bitterest bones of contention in this overheated political season, and has led to spirited exchanges in the media and on the web about what constituted real poverty in the early 1960s.

GMANews.TV has spent the past month trying to get to the bottom of Villar’s childhood poverty claims, interviewing neighbors, family members, and retired and active fish vendors who used to source their fish from Manny’s mother, Curing. She was acknowledged by both family members and her fellow-fish dealers as the entrepreneur in the family, and whom the candidate credits for teaching him the rudiments of business.

Manuel Villar Sr.'s government income

We also obtained from government archives the partial government employment records of the late Manuel Villar Sr. from 1938 to 1961 (his records beyond that year have not yet been found). Together with accounts from Curing’s fellow vendors of how much she was probably earning at the time, a fairly accurate picture has emerged for the first time of the Villar family’s income and what it could be worth in today’s money.

According to Manuel Villar Sr.’s salary record in 1961 as a rising official in the then-Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources, he was earning P448 a month or P5376 a year. It does not sound like much but the value of money was much different then. The minimum wage was four pesos a day, and an eight-ounce soft drink was 10 centavos or less. The elder Villar was earning an average of P22 a day.

Significantly, according to a household income survey in 1961 conducted by the National Statistics Office, the average annual individual income in that year was only P1,105. In other words, Manny Villar’s father was earning nearly five times the average income at the time.

Using the consumer price index from both 1961 and 2009 available on the National Statistics Office web site, we calculated the equivalent of P448 in 1961 to be P35,392 in today’s money, Manuel Villar Sr.’s monthly salary when adjusted for inflation. His rank in the civil service then was Budget Officer III.

Even in 1957, when the candidate says the family was much poorer, his father was earning P3960 a year at a time when the average individual income was P924 per annum.

Manuel Villar Sr. had started out in the government service in 1938 as a laboratory helper and became a junior fish warden during World War II. According to his employment records, Manuel Sr. studied fisheries in the United States as a "pensionado" or government scholar in 1948-49. When he returned to the Philippines, he was soon made a section chief and he continued to rise in both rank and salary.

Being a government employee was a relatively comfortable situation in the 1950s and 60s, especially for the rare one who had studied abroad on a scholarship. Government officials were much better paid in those days and, without the reputation for corruption attached to government service today, they enjoyed greater prestige in the community.

“They were definitely middle class," said Dr. Cielito Habito, an economist at Ateneo de Manila University and a former head of the National Economic and Development Authority, or NEDA, who helped GMANews.TV convert the elder Villar's income to today’s money. A double income family

But the father’s regular salary was just one income in the Villars’ double-income family. The main breadwinner was actually Manny’s now famous mother Curing. According to several fish market vendors and their children who worked alongside the Villars in the Divisoria market in the 1960s, Curing earned no less than P80 a day and could have averaged as much as P600 a day after building up a steady customer base that included restaurants and nearby offices to whom she delivered fresh fish.

Using the factor of 79, based on the Consumer Price Index, that’s the equivalent of P6,320 to P47,400 a day in 2010. The lower figure was recalled by Eduardo Artures, 69, who worked in the same market in his teens and who knew the Villars.

The higher figure was cited by retired fish vendor Lelet Buenviaje, 68, who worked in Divisoria for nearly 40 years and sold shrimp just a few stalls a way from Curing. She recalls Manny Jr. as a hard-working son who often assisted his mother.

Lelet Buenviaje, 68, began selling seafood at the Divisoria Market in 1960, the year she got married. She would regularly purchase shrimp from Curing Villar, who she remembers as hard-working and humble. DANNY PATAShe vividly recalls Curing being one of the most successful Divisoria seafood wholesalers during the 1960s. She herself would buy seafood from Aling Curing on a nearly daily basis, which she would then retail.

“Kasi kung minsan tinatanghali ako, wala na kong aabutan sa labas eh," recalls Lelet. “Minsan kumukuha ako 20 kilos, hanggang 30 (kilos). Pinakamababa 10 kilos ang kuha ko sa kanya. Napapautang niya kami. Kinabukasan ang bayad. Mabait si Aling Curing."

Lelet remembers most of Aling Curing’s customers being seafood vendors themselves as well, not ordinary consumers.

“Halimbawa may naligaw na buyer na bibili ng tingi, nagbebenta din siya. Pero mas marami siyang suki sa mga nagtitinda," remembers Lelet.

However, Senator Villar has insisted that his mother was never a wholesaler. “We were not in wholesaling. We were ordinary vendors selling shrimps in public markets, which I’ve been saying for so many times," he has said. “Tatlong banyera lamang ang tinda namin. Noong bandang huli, noong ako ay nasa college na, medyo dumadami-dami na yung tinda namin."

The Villar family lived in this rented house on Moriones street in Tondo, Manila from the late 1940s until around 1961. The Villar family shared this house with the families of Curita Villar's two older sisters. DANNY PATA Curing Villar and three of her daughters, who met GMANews.TV in an exclusive group interview in the family home in Las Piñas, don’t recall their income in those days, a time of low food prices and national optimism when the elder Macapagal, incumbent President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s father, was promising to lead a frugal and honest administration. But they were one in insisting that they were poor. The Villar sisters Baby, Vicky, and Cecile recall how during their years in Moriones, they had to forego luxuries such as new clothes and expensive food just to help their parents support their large family.

“Minsan, lalagyan lang namin ng patis ang kanin. Minsan, saging na may bagoong, mantika na may asin. Kung wala kaming ulam, kanin lang, okay na sa amin ‘yun sa araw-araw. ‘Pag may natira sa tinda (ni Nanay), yung mga hipon na nagkadurog-durog na ‘yung ulo, sisipsipin pa namin," says Gloria “Baby" Villar-Benedicto, one of Manny Villar’s three younger sisters. Baby is one year younger than the senator.

‘No way they were poor’

Manny Villar during his first communion. The Villar family’s conviction about their own poverty in the 1950s and 1960s could simply highlight the different definitions people have of being poor. Having nine children, with one dying of disease, could have left an imprint of hardship on their memories.

With tears in her eyes, Curing Villar recalls the desperation she felt when her youngest child Daniel fell ill.

"Alam mo, kapag may sakit ang anak mo, kung saan maaaring gumaling, dadalhin mo," she recalls, the pain still fresh, even after nearly 50 years. She also remembers borrowing money for her son's medical expenses: "May nagbibigay ng 20 porsyento sa palengke noon. Sabi ko, 'Ibalik mo na pera ko. Kahit magkano na lang ibigay mo sa akin, ibalik mo. Kailangan na kailangan lang ng anak ko ang pera eh.' Pabalik-balik ako sa kanya noon.."

But according to researchers who have worked in Tondo, the Villars were clearly much better off than many residents at the time.

Dr. Mary Racelis, an urban anthropologist who did poverty studies in Tondo in the 1960s, says poverty cannot be measured by income alone. “Housing is a very strong indicator of poverty," she told GMANews.TV. “They (the Villars) were renters of a home made of strong materials. That does not make them poor."

“The really poor in Tondo lived in ramshackle homes of nipa and straw," Racelis added.

According to the poor themselves, she continued, “the poverty threshold is having three regular meals a day. That’s the threshold in Tondo to this day."

“The Villars had a double income, the father was a regular wage earner, they eventually owned a piece of land. They were in the formal sector - they could have been in the upper 10 percent," Racelis said. “There was no way they were poor in Tondo."

Moreover, according to Angelito Nunag, a UP-educated historian specializing in Tondo history, “Moriones was central to all activities, and near the church, market and pier. Kung may tirahan ka diyan, kahit rental, may sinasabi ka."

While recalling that they grew up without luxuries, the Villar children have never claimed they were hungry, admitting they always had three meals a day, thanks to their hardworking parents.

When asked how difficult it was back then to feed nine children, Nanay Curing recalls: “Hindi naman mahirap. Simple lang naman ang kinakain namin eh. ‘Yun lang mga isda na putol ang ulo, putol ang buntot, ang inuuwi ko. Hindi naman ‘yung mamahalin."

With a double income much higher than the nation’s average, the Villar couple could easily afford to feed their children.

Their fish dealer-mother also had easy access to unsold fish and shrimp from the market, which she often brought home for her family's dinner.

Nanay Curing’s humble origins

Despite Curing Villar's success, she never forgot where she came from.

While candidate Villar’s rags-to-riches narrative is debatable, his mother’s origins featured a major disaster that left her family with nothing.

Almost every Sunday, the Villar siblings and their children gather for lunch with Nanay Curing (center) at her Las Piñas home. "Yun lang Good Friday mo ako hindi makikita sa palengke noon," recalls the 86 year old of her Divisoria days. DANNY PATA Curita “Curing" Bamba grew up in the fishing town of Orani, Bataan where according to her own description, her father worked as an “influence peddler" at the municipio. But a cataclysmic fire before World War II nearly wiped out the town, including her family’s home, forcing her parents and two older sisters to migrate to Manila.

The Bamba sisters and their mother started out sewing dresses at the Hollywood shirt factory near Tondo’s Santo Niño church, a factory that still exists. But Nanay Curing recalls that shortly before the war, she found her opportunity to set up a small business when there was a public raffle for stall spaces at the Divisoria Market.

“Nung nakabunot ako sa Divisoria, nakakuha ako ng pwesto 2245," she recalls. Her future husband, Manuel “Maning" Villar Sr., was a war-time government fish inspector she met when he was ordered by Japanese soldiers to confiscate her fish to feed the troops. She persuaded him to bring the fish to his family rather than to the enemy.

That was the start of an entrepreneurial life that provided the seeds for her son’s rise to wealth and power. Manny has frequently called his mother “the original Mrs. Sipag at Tiyaga."

Lelet Buenviaje says that when she became a fish vendor in 1960, Curing Villar was already a wholesaler who supplied mostly shrimp from her native Bataan to retailers. “Maraming suki yan," Lelet recalls. “Laging walang natitira sa tinda. Ubos na ubos."

As the family breadwinner, Buenviaje says she earned as much as P300 net income on a good day, or P23,700 in today’s money, enabling her to buy a house in Tondo. She says Curing made at least twice as much as she did.

Even when Curing was already earning the equivalent of tens of thousands per day, she was not known to splurge on fancy dresses and worked on every holiday except for Good Friday, her only rest day of the year. Manny, as the second child and oldest son, was often at her side assisting her before he went to school.

Even up until Manny was in college, he would help his mother sell seafood. Curing recalls how a teen-aged Manny negotiated a business deal that marked her entrance into big-time seafood dealership.

“Kaya ako nakapagrasyon noon, kasi naging kaklase ni Manny noon ang anak ng namamahala sa William Lines. Sabi ni Manny sa kaklase niya, ‘Baka naman puwedeng magrasyon ng isda ang nanay ko sa inyo,’" says Curing. During the 1960s, William Lines was one of the largest shipping lines in the country.

Villar family moves to upscale neighborhood

Curing’s earnings, coupled with her husband’s regular salary, enabled the couple to buy property in the exclusive Tondo subdivision of San Rafael. According to the Tondo historian Nunag, San Rafael was a community built by Americans during the Commonwealth period to house the newly wealthy of Tondo.

A photograph of Moriones Street in the 1950s.When they left the Moriones house, the less well-off Bamba sisters remained there with their children and their parents, Manny’s grandparents.

By that time, Manny and most of his siblings were enrolled in the then-Tondo Parochial School run by the church, which charged a modest tuition fee. Their cousins continued in the nearby public school Isabelo delos Reyes Elementary School, where Manny and his older sister Odette began their education before transferring to the private school.

In San Rafael, the Villars lived among the upwardly mobile of Tondo. The house still stands along quiet Bernardo Street, but is now owned by a Jun Borres who uses the structure to house workers employed by his company Jumbo Fisheries. The village has apparently seen its best days and vehicles can enter without a security check. Warehouses dominate the area, and the rainy season still brings floods. The newly wealthy would probably not live there any more.

But that is where Manny moved as a teen-ager and lived at a time when he claimed his family was too poor to save the life of his brother Danny, who got sick and died of leukemia after their transfer to San Rafael.

The Senator and his siblings explain that by that time their family moved to San Rafael, they had already begun to rise above the poverty they experienced when living in Moriones.

Odette was the eldest among the Villar siblings.

"Nagkataon na noong nagkasakit ang kapatid ko si Danny, kalilipat lang namin. Transition period 'yun. Sabi nga sa (kanta), umahon kami. Unti-unti kaming umunlad. Ang Moriones at ang Balut, magkaiba. Ang sinasabing mahirap kami, sa Moriones 'yun," says Manny Villar's sister, Baby.

Whatever the true circumstances of Danny’s death, Manny Villar’s parents certainly had enough to give their oldest son a better education and upbringing than many in Tondo at the time, setting the stage for building a business empire and in 2010, a run at the presidency. - With reporting by Pia Faustino, GMANews.TV

Despite Church objections to the promotion of condom use, Health Secretary Esperanza Cabral said it is intensifying the campaign, particularly in a community in Cebu City where 57 injecting drug users (IDUs) were found positive for HIV.

In an interview, Cabral said the Department of Health (DoH) is promoting ''consistent and correct use of condoms'' in addition to ''abstinence'' in Cebu and in other priority areas to avert transmission of sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV.

''It is very alarming since 1 out of 3 IDUs were found to have the HIV. They got HIV through sharing contaminated needles,'' Cabral said.

''But since they are also sexually active individuals at posibleng makaapekto sa community, nagbibigay din tayo ng malawakang kampanya para makaiwas sa ganitong sakit, at kasama na nga dito ang condom use,'' she said.

Cabral said the DoH is currently assessing if there is a need for the new HIV cases or the community to be given anti-retroviral therapy to suppress the HIV virus and stop the progression of HIV disease.

The DoH study at the community which investigated at least 170 people also found an increasing incidence of Hepatitis C, another infectious disease spread by blood-to-blood contact.

DoH-Epidemiologists also found an increasing incidence of HIV among men having sex with men (MSM), she said.

Dr. Eric Tayag, head of the National Epidemiology Center (NEC), said the DoH is concerned about the changes in the mode of transmission of the virus.

In the past, the most common modes of transmission were unsafe sex, exposure to contaminated blood and mother-to-child.

''We are very concerned, especially in Cebu City where HIV incidence was high among IDUs. We have already talked with the city health officials and they are doing everything to help contain the spread of the virus in that area,'' he said in a television interview.

MANILA, Philippines - Embattled Justice Secretary Alberto Agra will review his own ruling clearing two members of the Ampatuan clan in the Maguindanao massacre and come up with a decision within the week.

Agra has drawn flak for absolving detained Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Gov. Zaldy Ampatuan and his cousin, acting Maguindanao Vice Gov. Akmad Ampatuan Sr., also Mamasapano town mayor, of involvement in the slaughter of 57 people â€" including journalists and lawyers â€" on Nov. 23 last year in Maguindanao.

The multiple murder case against Ampatuan patriarch Andal Sr. and his son Datu Unsay Mayor Andal Jr. remains, based on Agra’s resolution.

The accused are detained at Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig City.

Families of the victims have moved for the reversal of Agra’s decision.

The Ampatuans were staunch allies of President Arroyo and were believed to have manipulated the results of the 2004 elections in the province to ensure her victory. Mrs. Arroyo’s political foes have accused her of having a hand in the dropping of charges against the Ampatuans.

Malacañang ordered Agra to take a second look at his resolution, which even state prosecutors openly contested.

Agra, in his resolution, said there was no evidence to prove that the two Ampatuans had conspired with the other accused in carrying out the massacre.

“I will consult with the prosecutors involved, and take their opinions and observations under advisement, and give their recommendations the utmost weight and consideration,” Agra said in a speech before DOJ employees and officials attending a flag-raising ceremony at the department yesterday.

The DOJ chief said he has decided to act on the appeals himself rather than delegate the task â€" as he had promised â€" to a review panel.

He also shrugged off calls for him to inhibit from the case.

“The resolution of this motion for reconsideration belongs solely to the discretion of the DOJ secretary. And I intend to exercise that discretion in full,” he said.

“It is my intention to release the resolution of the MR (motion for reconsideration) this week. Political timing, as has been suggested, plays no part in my strict schedule. Those who know me know that delay is not my style.”

“Because it is like any other case, where both the victim and the accused are accorded the same constitutional rights, I will not inhibit myself in resolving the MR. I will not create a panel,” he said. “My faith in my own objectivity has not been shaken, for there is no reason for me to doubt myself. I have, and always will, act in accordance with my conscience, and due regard to my oath as a lawyer and a public servant,” he said.

No money involved

Agra said his decision to clear the two Ampatuans was based on evidence “with my heart leaning towards the victims, but my mind fixed on the rule of law.”

“With a clear conscience, I declared that burden was not discharged in that instance. Conscience was my motivation, and rule of law my guide,” he said.

“I will say with a straight face, on the honor of my father’s name, I did not receive a single centavo from any quarter, to release the resolution, or rule in that manner,” he stressed.

Agra also rebuffed calls for him to resign, saying he has no plan of turning his back on the challenges besetting his office.

Instead of just waiting for Quezon City Judge Jocelyn Solis-Reyes to act on the multiple murder case against the Ampatuans and several others, Agra caught everyone by surprise by issuing a resolution last April 16 clearing Zaldy and Akmad, who is also the ARMM governor’s brother-in-law.

Agra said he was acting on a motion for review filed by defense lawyers.

He also said he had to act swiftly on the motion in keeping with his personal commitment to address the huge backlog of cases pending in his office.

When he took over as acting DOJ secretary about a month ago, there were reportedly 9,000 cases â€" some dating back to the 1990s â€" pending with the Office of the Secretary.

Agra said he hopes to cut the backlog by half by the time President Arroyo steps down on June 30.

The real targets of the Maguindanao massacre were the wife and relatives of Buluan Vice Mayor Esmael Mangudadatu who were leading a convoy of followers, journalists and lawyers on their way to Shariff Aguak to file his certificate of candidacy for governor to challenge Andal Jr.

Witnesses said they were stopped at a checkpoint along the Maguindanao highway by over a hundred heavily armed men led by Andal Jr.

The victims, some begging for their lives, were reportedly taken to a remote hilly area at gunpoint and executed one after another.

Most of the victims were already buried, some still in their vehicles, when help arrived.

More time needed

Malacañang was not bothered by the animosity between Agra and his prosecutors over his controversial ruling, saying they just need more time to resolve their differences.

Deputy presidential spokesman Gary Olivar also called on possible witnesses to the massacre to come forward to help ensure speedy justice for the victims.

“Obviously if both sides â€" Secretary Agra and his prosecutors â€" need more time to come to terms then let’s leave them be and let them use the time left to reconcile,” Olivar told a news briefing.

“We cannot force this process. The important thing is they started to talk to each other and hopefully, sooner or later, they would reach a common position,” he said.

He noted that Agra himself had mentioned publicly that he continued to have an open mind on the appeals filed to reverse his resolution.

He also said the reported emergence of new witnesses could also lead to the reversal of Agra’s position.

Executive Secretary Leandro Mendoza earlier directed Agra to meet with protesting prosecutors and submit weekly reports to the Palace on the developments of the case, including the tackling of the motion for reconsideration.

“The important thing is for justice in the end to be served, however long it may need to take,” Olivar said.

A day after the issuance of Agra’s order, state prosecutors walked out of their offices in protest.

“We are deeply concerned that the resolution will all the more convince a long skeptical public that our criminal justice system is impotent when the accused are politically influential,” chief state prosecutor Claro Arellano told reporters after the walkout.

“With all due respect (to Secretary Agra), we still believe that there was probable cause in the case,” Arellano said. With Paolo Romero - By Edu Punay (Philstar News Service, www.philstar.com)

MANILA (Reuters) - Philippine presidential hopeful Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino has posted a double-digit lead over his nearest opponent in an opinion poll published just two weeks before elections are to be held.

It was the first time that Aquino has held a double-digit lead in a Social Weather Stations (SWS) poll since December.

The poll, conducted on April 16-19 and published on Monday, showed that support for the son of the country's late democracy icon, Corazon "Cory" Aquino, edged up 1 point to 38 percent. The country will hold national elections and launch its first automated vote count on May 10.

Support for Aquino's closest rival, property magnate-turned-senator Manuel "Manny" Villar dropped two points to 26 percent in April.

Villar's ratings have slipped since February, when he closed in on Aquino's lead with a two-point margin, partly due to allegations by his critics that President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and her husband were supporting his candidacy.

Arroyo is unpopular due to several corruption scandals during her nine years in office.

The number of undecided also inched up to 6 percent from 5 percent, according to the survey of 2,400 registered voters.

Aquino's ratings have been steady at above 35 percent since the country's two main independent pollsters, SWS and Pulse Asia, started surveys on presidential candidates late last year.

Pulse Asia is likely to issue its latest poll later this week.

Former president Joseph "Erap" Estrada, ousted from office in 2001, and administration candidate Gilberto "Gibo" Teodoro remained at third and fourth respectively in the SWS poll.

Estrada's ratings dropped 2 points to 17 percent from the previous survey in March. Teodoro's support improved by 3 points to 9 percent on the strength of the administration party's wider reach, but it was not enough to lift him from single-digit levels.

The results of the opinion poll, which have a 2 percent margin of error, were posted on the Social Weather Stations website www.sws.org.ph/.

An informal poll conducted by Thomson Reuters during the annual convention of foreign exchange traders over the weekend showed 77 percent, or 37 out of 48 respondents, favoured Aquino as president. Teodoro came in a far second with 10 percent while Villar came in third with 8 percent. No one voted for Estrada.

MANILA, Philippines â€" Vice presidential bet Sen. Loren Legarda had called her now running mate Sen. Manny Villar “crooked,” “rotten” and “good for nothing,” according to Senate President and re-electionist senator Juan Ponce Enrile.

In a press conference today at the Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino headquarters in Mandaluyong City, Enrile said Legarda only allied herself with Villar for her own political ambition, particularly the financial support during the national campaign.

He claimed that Legarda was the one who had been pushing him to oust Villar from the Senate presidency that time.

"Manong please do this for the sake of Senate. Si Manny Villar bulok," Enrile quoted Legarda as saying when she accosted him when she hatched the plan of some of her colleagues to unseat Villar.

Earlier, Enrile, who is running under the PMP ticket of former President Joseph Estrada, also accused Villar of applying pressure on the Philippine Stocks Exchange directors to except the shares of stocks of his company, Vista Land and Landscaping Inc., from the lock up provision. - By Dennis Carcamo (Philstar News Service, www.philstar.com)

BRUSSELS (AFP) - â€" Belgium's government collapsed on Monday amid a breakdown between Dutch and French-speaking parts, hurtling the country towards elections that cast a doubt over its future as a unified state.

Two months from Belgium taking over the EU's chair, the palace announced that King Albert II had accepted prime minister Yves Leterme's offer to quit after negotiations between Flemish and Walloon parts disintegrated.

"The king has accepted the resignation of the government," said a short statement, following a failed mission by deputy premier and finance minister Didier Reynders to patch up Belgium's fragile coalition.

Reynders, who had spent three days failing to broker reconciliation on the king's behalf, told national television that the likelihood of a general election posed a real danger for his country's future unity.

"I am afraid that this is a choice which could lead the country towards a very serious crisis," he said of the drift towards snap polls, citing tension over precisely what the Flemish north and Walloon south "want to do together."

Leterme, a 49-year-old conservative dubbed 'serial quitter' after twice previously giving up the ghost, reached the end of his tether on Thursday, but the king reserved judgement in a desperate effort to get the coalition back round the table following a walk-out by Flemish hardliners.

The statement from the palace said that the king had simply asked the government to manage "outstanding affairs", which raises the prospect of an election across the country's three federal regions -- Flanders, Wallonia and the capital region of Brussels, which also houses the European Union's headquarters.

According to a statement from Leterme's office, the departing premier said "it was impossible to reach a deal" between the rival linguistic political formations that lie behind increasing instability in Belgian politics.

Reynders said it had become apparent to Leterme that a "loss of confidence" between the different parties had made it impossible to pursue negotiations.

The dissolution of the federal parliament would, under the Belgian constitution, lead to elections within 40 days, suggesting they could take place in the first half of June -- with the EU role starting on July 1.

The alternative is for the king to try to find another compromise negotiator who might be able to head off a damaging vote set for the parliament on Thursday, which could see Flemish lawmakers use their majority to clip voting rights for French speakers in Flemish suburbs of Brussels.

Leterme's government only lasted five months after predecessor Herman Van Rompuy left to take up the full-time EU presidency.

The latest crisis has been termed by commentators as worse than previous government collapses in 2007 and 2008.

Earlier on Monday, Reynders had said that "all the elements were in place" after a whistle-stop weekend tour of the five coalition partners and two smaller green parties.

However, Belgian media reported that liberal and Christian-Democrat Flemish parties were not minded to return to the negotiating table before Thursday.

The impasse has led Belgian newspapers to predict the break-up of the country -- with headlines such as 'Bye-Bye Belgium' -- as the more prosperous Dutch-speaking Flanders already enjoys substantial autonomy.

Their poorer francophone Walloon neighbours argue that the existing devolved set up with regional parliaments was sufficient.

The country is proud of Brussels' status as 'the capital of Europe,' and many were keen to avoid a prolonged political crisis, and embarrassment as Belgium prepares to take the EU reins.

I think some of the statements are correct but as of this date, there is no specific or conclusive result of the studies related to this.

Here are some statements from professional organizations related to Influences on sexual orientation or further information about their Theories on homosexuality:

The American Psychological Association, the American Psychiatric Association, and the National Association of Social Workers in 2006 stated: “Currently, there is no scientific consensus about the specific factors that cause an individual to become heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual - including possible biological, psychological, or social effects of the parents' sexual orientation. However, the available evidence indicates that the vast majority of lesbian and gay adults were raised by heterosexual parents and the vast majority of children raised by lesbian and gay parents eventually grow up to be heterosexual.”

The American Academy of Pediatrics in 2004 stated:
“The mechanisms for the development of a particular sexual orientation remain unclear, but the current literature and most scholars in the field state that one's sexual orientation is not a choice; that is, individuals do not choose to be homosexual or heterosexual. A variety of theories about the influences on sexual orientation have been proposed. Sexual orientation probably is not determined by any one factor but by a combination of genetic, hormonal, and environmental influences. In recent decades, biologically based theories have been favored by experts. Although there continues to be controversy and uncertainty as to the genesis of the variety of human sexual orientations, there is no scientific evidence that abnormal parenting, sexual abuse, or other adverse life events influence sexual orientation. Current knowledge suggests that sexual orientation is usually established during early childhood.”

The Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2007 stated:
“Despite almost a century of psychoanalytic and psychological speculation, there is no substantive evidence to support the suggestion that the nature of parenting or early childhood experiences play any role in the formation of a person's fundamental heterosexual or homosexual orientation. It would appear that sexual orientation is biological in nature, determined by a complex interplay of genetic factors and the early uterine environment. Sexual orientation is therefore not a choice.”

The American Psychiatric Association stated:
“Homosexuality was once thought to be the result of troubled family dynamics or faulty psychological development. Those assumptions are now understood to have been based on misinformation and prejudice. Currently there is a renewed interest in searching for biological etiologies for homosexuality.”

33 out of the 48 mayors bohol jumpships to NP and now supporting villar. that leaves 15 to lakas-kampi. if these mayors are truly the voice of their town, that would mean that 33 towns are supporting the candicacy of julius herrera the official candidate of NP for governor of bohol. but question is, can the voice of these mayors translate into votes favoring NP candidates? that can be answered after may 10.

gamay ra nga garcia ang nisuporta kang villar, si byron garcia lang ug wala nay kwenta kay dili man na siya dakong haligi sa mga garcia. tigpasayaw ra na sa mga piniriso. ug si alvin garcia nga walay laing kasandigan nga dakong politiko to get funds for this election. ang importante nila nga ang kadtong dagkong mga garcia sama nila pabling garcia, pablo john ug gwen garcia naa gihapon ni gibo. i think hasta gani si winston naa gihapon kang gibo.

balik ta sa bohol, nganong lalisan man ang pag-adto ni aumentado sa cebu aron pag sign sa manifesto to support gibo? it's plain and simple, iyang supporta naa ra gihapon kaniya pero sa ilang mga so called co-lakas members sa bohol wala siya nag support. dili man siguro na lisod sabton nya lalisan pa.

ms. tekla: tag question is a grammatical structure in which a declarative statement or an imperative is turned into a question by adding an interrogative fragment and that is called the "tag". for example, open the window, will you? she doesn't really want those apples, does she? understood class?

Bible Study / THE GIFT
April 21, 2010, 10:00:36 PM
By: Bo Sanchez

A young man was getting ready to graduate from college. For many months he had admired a beautiful sports car in a dealer's showroom, and knowing his father could well afford it, he told him that was all he wanted. As Graduation Day approached, the young man awaited signs that his father had purchased the car. Finally, on the morning of his graduation, his father called him into his private study.

His father told him how proud he was to have such a fine son, and told him how much he loved him.

He handed his son a beautifully wrapped gift box. Curious, but somewhat disappointed, the young man opened the box and found a lovely, leather-bound Bible, with the young man's name embossed in gold. Angrily, he raised his voice to his father and said, "With all your money you give me a Bible? and stormed out of the house, leaving the Bible.

Many years passed and the young man was very successful in business. He had a beautiful home and wonderful family, but realized his father was very old, and thought perhaps he should go to him. He had not seen him since that graduation day. Before he could make arrangements, he received a telegram telling him his father had passed away, and willed all of his possessions to his son. He needed to come home immediately and take care of things.

When he arrived at his father's house, sudden sadness and regret filled his heart. He began to search through his father's important papers and saw the still new Bible, just as he had left it years ago. With tears, he opened the Bible and began to turn the pages. His father had carefully underlined a verse: Matt 7:11, "And if ye, being evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your Heavenly father which is in heaven, give to those who ask Him?" As he read those words, a car key dropped from the back of the Bible. It had a tag with the dealer's name, the same dealer who had the sports car he had desired. On the tag was the date of his graduation, and the words... PAID IN FULL.

How many times do we miss God's blessings because they are not packaged as we expected? I trust you enjoyed this.

Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; but remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for...

If your gift is not packed the way you want it, it's because it is better packed that way! Always appreciate little things; they usually lead you to attachments!

(philstar.com) Updated April 21, 2010 07:00 PM

MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - Another batch of 21 Filipino sailors on board a Liberian vessel were snatched by heavily armed Somali pirates Wednesday morning.

The Philippine Embassy in Nairobi, in a report to the Home Office in Manila Wednesday, said the Panamanian-flagged, Liberian- owned bulk carrier Voc Daisy was seized by Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden, 190 miles southeast of Salalah, Oman.

Philippine Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Esteban Conejos said the Philippine government coordinating with the vessel's local manning agency to determine the condition of the Filipino seafarers.

The European Union Naval Force said at the time of the attack, the ship was heading west from Ruwais, United Arab Emirates making its way to the eastern rendezvous point of the International Recommended Transit Corridor (IRTC), for onward transit through the Suez Canal.

"MV Voc Daisy was able to raise the alarm before the four armed pirates, carrying three AK47s and one RPG, stormed onboard and cut their lines of communication," an EUNAVFOR statement said.

The EU NAVFOR, which is helping Philippine authorities in monitoring the situation, confirmed that all the Filipinos sailors are safe.

EU's naval force in Somalia escorts merchant vessels carrying humanitarian aid of the World Food Program and vessels of African Union Mission for Somalia, and protects vulnerable ships in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean and to deter and disrupt piracy.

The Philippines is the world's leading supplier of ship crew with over 350,000 sailors, or about a fifth of the world's seafarers, manning oil tankers, luxury liners, and passenger vessels worldwide, exposing them to piracy attacks.

Since late 2008, more than 200 Filipino seamen have been abducted by pirates off Somali waters.

As a policy, the Philippine government does not negotiate nor pay ransom to kidnappers, but gives ship owners the free hand in negotiating for the release of abducted Filipino sailors.
