WOW! Ms grazie! I salute to you! I look up to people who are hardworking and very driven! My mom was a working student also. 'Striver' siya sa UB. I take pride of having a mom who worked her way to college! Although, I have not experienced what she went through, I live my life through the lessons that I learned from her.

Way to go, ms grazie! Salute!  :)

Thanks a lot, Ms. Melrose!  There was no other way to get college education then on my part but to strive hard.  At that time it was ambitious to even dream of going to school  but I persevere. I didn't think it was that difficult then because each day when I go to school, I had the end in my mind that I would finish high school and then move on to college and have a decent job so I could support my family especially so I could send my younger siblings to school.  To change the course of my family's life - that was my drive.

I appreciate that you acknowledged your Mom's hard work so you many not experience what she went through.  I, myself, sent my sisters' to school and I was glad they valued as well our hard work for them by doing good in school.

Now, going back to Obama.  In the early part of the campaign or way before Obama officially expressed his intention to run for US President, people doubted that a Muslim-sounding family name could stand a chance in a presidential election in a country who was turn to pieces by Muslims in the 9/11.  Some detractors even want to confuse people by naming him as Barack Osama and later apologized that it was just typo error.  He stayed calm and slowly but surely rose to the level way a little over Hillary.  He talked a great deal about HOPE towards the end of his speech in the video below and so I reiterate what I said in my earlier post, I hope he wins!

#15818
Well said, Macky! You talk about us not learning the Spanish language when we were colonized by the Spaniards for a long time.  The best example is the Chabacanos in Zamboanga, no offense meant...  I used to work with Chabacanos and the pride themselves for their l"Spanish" anguage.  On time, I was already working in Manila at that time, my Chabacano friends talk like chirping birds then our Secretary who speaks real Spanish was just dumbfounded upon hearing them.  She said, that certainly is "trash Spanish"!  And when she learned that was Chabacano, She said, Chabacano means trash!  I checked Wikipedia and here's what it says:

The word chabacanoâ€"which the name Chavacano is derived fromâ€"is Spanish for "poor taste," "vulgar," "common," "tasteless," "tacky," or "coarse."

I didn't have the social sickness you mentioned except for a bit of the Manana Habit but I am kicking it off strongly now.

I like Obama of all presidential candidates - Republican and Democratic!  He may be young in politics but he has the vision, he has the energy and he has the brain to make the difference, to make the change America has been waiting for!

I hope he wins!

An amazing anti-cancer cream developed and studied by Filipino doctors from the Philippine General Hospital won the top prize in an international clinical congress in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.

During the 93rd Annual Clinical Congress of the American College of Surgeons (ACS), the world's largest convention for surgeons of all specialties, 275 research entries from all over the world were accepted for scientific exhibition. With a total attendance of more than 15,000 doctors, including other health professionals, scientific and industrial exhibitors, as well as members of the press and invited international guests, the ACS has been the most prestigious forum for presentation of research and innovations in surgical treatment in the world.

The Philippine entry presenting the DeBCC, an innovative topical cream to treat the most common type of skin cancer, Basal Cell Carcinoma, authored by Drs. Eric Talens, Daniel de la Paz, Orlando Ocampo, Porfirio Tica, and the late Horacio Estradato, together with World-Class Inventor Rolando dela Cruz, was initially chosen as one of 11 "Posters of Exceptional Merit" at the start of the meeting. These selected researches were then presented orally in a forum for the scrutiny of the Board of Judges chaired by world-famous Dr. Barbara L. Bass, a respected cancer surgeon. After an impressive presentation, this Philippine entry was voted the "Best Scientific Exhibit" for 2007.

It was only two years ago when Dr. Talens presented the clinical trial of his group to launch the DeBCC, a cream formulated from the extract of cashew nuts, as a treatment option in the management of Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC), the most common type of skin cancer in the world.

Inventor de la Cruz, envisioned this cream to be the "silver bullet" to beat skin cancer. The DeBCC previously garnered two international gold medal awards, the first from the Archimedes Inventors' Show in Moscow, Russia last March 2005, and the second one from the IENA International Inventors' Forum in Nuremburg, Germany last November 3, 2005. The same invention also got the highest score from a panel of international judges, and was awarded the top World Invention Winner ââ,¬â€œ Diamond Award and the Overall Inventors' Award for 2006 in the British Invention Show last October 21, 2006 in London.

In support of the mission of the Philippine General Hospital, the UP College of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), researchers from the university have sought alternative treatments for common ailments that could offer more cost-effective local options, with the ultimate objective of improving health care in the Philippines. The DeBCC has been presented as a viable option to the usual surgical treatment of this type of skin cancer.

Yet again, the ingenuity of the Filipinos has shown its brilliance to the world!

Leah Donna Dizon

The name Leah Donna Dizon may not ring a bell to many of us, but in the Land of the Rising Sun, she's no ordinary woman. Leah is a famous model and singer who is a sought-after product endorser.

She has endorsed top brands such as Lotte Rich Fruit chocolate drink, PlayStation 3, Mochi Ice Cream, JVC Digital Audio Player, Fuji film digital camera printer, ââ,¬Å"no-calorieââ,¬Â Coca-Cola and Essential Damage-Care shampoo.

A good singer as well, her album Destiny Line released last September sold 44,469 copies in a span of four weeks.

As a TV personality, she hosts the musical variety shows Sakigake Ongaku Banzuke Vegas and Webtama.

And as a budding actress, she recently starred in an American produced film, titled Traffic in the Sky.

All these and she is just 21 years old!

She was born in Las Vegas, Nevada, where she spent most of her childhood. Her father is a French-American while her mother is a Chinese-Filipina. She attempted to start a career on the runways in the United States, but she only gained ââ,¬Å"moderate success.ââ,¬Â

A year after her photos got posted on the Internet, her fan base increased. Heeding to the advice of her supporters, she sent a demo tape to a talent agency in Japan. She got accepted in April 2006, and then migrated there. And the rest is history.

Her parents are casino dealers in Las Vegas. She has two older brothers, an older sister, and two younger brothers. She claims she grew up listening to Rock and R&B music. She took dance lessons and was in high school theater. Dizon dreamed of pursuing a career as a singer.

After graduating from high school, Dizon decided to pose for the cover features of various import car magazines. This gained her much attention and a fanbase overseas, predominantly in Asia.

One year after her pictures were posted up on the internet, she already had 2,000,000 hits from search engines.Following the advice of her fans, Dizon sent a demo tape with model photographs of herself to a talent agency in Japan and in April of 2006, after being accepted, she immediately moved to Tokyo. In October 2006, she released her first photobook titled Petite Amie (Girlfriend in French), which was ranked as the third best selling photobook of that year.

On February 2007, she released her first CD single and DVD package, Softly under the record label Victor Entertainment, which peaked at number #7 in the Oricon Weekly Chart. At the same time, she also released her second photobook titled Hello! Leah.

On May 2007, Dizon released her second single Koi Shiyõ which also peaked at #7 on the Oricon Weekly Chart. The title track is described as a 'grooving, up-tempo dance song' and the single features 2 B-sides: Could you be that one? and Aishiteru Love Story. The title track, Koi Shiyõ is being used in a Lotte TV ad while Could you be that one? is being used in a PlayStation 3 Ninja Gaiden Sigma TV ad, with Dizon starring in both commercials.

Her third single entitled LOVE was released on August 2007.

Leah released her debut album "Destiny Line" on September 2007. The CD+DVD Edition contains 14 tracks, 10 of which were penned by Leah herself the single PVs as well as a special album PV "Again and Again". The CD Only Edition contains the digitally released remix of Koi Shiyõ, called Koi Shiyõ (yasutaka nakata-capsule mix).

Leah Dizon's third photobook titled Heaven, was released October 2007. It includes a DVD.

Despite all her success in Japan, what's remarkable with Leah is that whenever people ask about her mixed ethnicities, she never fails to talk big about her being a Filipino.

General Topic / What is the gender of computer?
January 08, 2008, 08:08:10 AM
The teacher was explaining to her class that in Spanish, unlike English,

nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine.

"House" for instance, is feminine: "la casa."

"Pencil," however, is masculine: "el lapiz."

A student asked, "What gender is 'computer'?"

Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups,
male and female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether
"computer" should be a masculine or a feminine noun.

Each group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation.

The men's group decided that "computer" should definitely be of the feminine
gender ("la computadora"), because:

1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic;

2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is
incomprehensible to everyone else;

3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long t erm memory for possible later
retrieval; and

4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending
half your paycheck on accessories for it.

(THIS GETS BETTER!)

The women's group, however, concluded that computers should be Masculine
("el computador"), because:

1. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on;

2. They have a lot of data but still can't think for themselves;

3. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time
they ARE the problem; and

4. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you had waited a little
longer, you could have gotten a better model.

The women won.

It was so bad, ms ethyl for Arnold to declare state of calamity.  Kaluoy lang sa Reno kay diha lagi levee ning collapse nang lutaw tawon but na contain ra man yata pod dayon.  Sa among silingan two houses across the street, nag mistulang river ilang backyard.  I called them pero ok ra daw sila.  Kadto pa ra ba ang old man naay cancer tawon.

Dihay nasunog na balay sa downtown Sacramento kay nag kandila lagi kay nag power outage for a long time yesterday dayon natumba mao to nasunog.  Oldie ra ba ang naa didto dayon nag pass out sya.  Good thing dihay nakakita naay smoke sa iyang balay natabang ra sya.  Basta, dihay mga na uproot na mga old trees sa downtown.  Sa Sierra areas kay 10 feet ang snow to the delight of the skiiers!

Kuya Joey,

Did you watch the back to back debate of the presidential candidates of Republican and Democratic Parties in New Hamshire?  I missed half of the Republican debate. It seems like I didn't miss much of the earlier part of the debate of the Republican anyway because I enjoyed more of the Democratic candidates' debate.  I think, of all the candidates, Obama was the sharpest of 'em all.

It's okay if you do most of the talking because I do well in reading, Kuya Joey! ;D

Speaking of Obama, I like him too because he isn't what we call in the Phils as "trapo" translated to traditional politician.  Party-wise, I am more of a republican for no reason in particular  :D  Just like you, I also thought Obama didn't stand a chance with Clinton seemingly strong but lastnight at the Iowa Primary he surprised me!  He did a good job! But I understand, Kuya Joey that his victory lastnight didn't ensure him the Democratic Party's presidential candiate, or am I wrong?
