As a teacher, I see other, more practical benefits in believing in Santa and his pals. It gives children the opportunity to think hypothetically. It encourages their creativity, which most of the modern world seems to squelch. Childhood is the prime time to instill the creative thought process, and if it’s not nurtured in the early years, it’s difficult to resurrect later.

There’s another reason, of utmost importance, to believe in Santa Claus. I’ve learned that when you stop believing, you get underwear instead of toys.

I believed in Santa until I was nine years old. It was wonderful thinking that a kind old man loved all the good children of the world. He didn’t care if they were rich or poor, or black, white, red, or yellow. He didn’t care what kind of family they came from. Yep, Santa was an equal-opportunity bearer of gifts!

So how does believing in this sort of goodness harm children in any way? It doesn’t! My six grandchildren all still believe in Santa, and we perpetuate the myth every chance we get. We leave cookies and milk on Christmas Eve, we search the night sky for the Christmas star, and we listen closely for reindeer hooves on the roof.

The figure of the jolly old elf, in actuality, is based on a real man. A wealthy citizen of Asia Minor, Nicholas gave gifts and money to children and to poor families in the fourth century. This historical seed evolved into our belief in Santa, with the help of Clement Clark Moore’s “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” better known as “The Night Before Christmas.” Moore wrote the story in 1822 as a gift for his children, and our concept of Santa Claus, the chubby little man dressed in a fur-trimmed red suit, is largely based on this tale.

I’m fifty years old, and I STILL believe in the magic of Christmas! Of course, I know that my credit card, and not a guy from the North Pole, delivers the goodies, but there is something magical about the holiday. After all, Christmas, with the birth of Christ, is the greatest gift ever given to us by God.

Why Kids should believe in Santa Claus â€" Yes

By: Holle Abee

Early childhood should be a happy, wondrous time, filled with magic and fantasy. In this modern world, kids grow up much too quickly. They start attending an organized regiment of pre-K at the age of 4. why not just let them be kids for a few years?

Young children should have the opportunity to believe in the tooth fairy, the Easter bunny, the Great Pumpkin, leprechauns, and most of all, Santa Claus!

A Touching Christmas Story

A couple was Christmas shopping at the mall on Christmas Eve and the mall was completely packed.

Walking through the mall, the surprised wife looked up and noticed her husband was no where around and she was very upset because they much shopping to do.  She used her cell phone to call her husband, to ask him where he was.

The husband in a calm voice said, “Honey, do you remember the jewelry store we went into 5 years ago where you fell in love with that diamond necklace that we could not afford, and I told you that I would get it for you one day?”

His wife said, crying, “Yes, I remember that jewelry store.”

He said, “I’m in the bar right next to it.”

‘Bangon Ormoc’

Houssam put on a clean white shirt bearing the exhortation, “Bangon Ormoc  (Rise up, Ormoc).”

They were joined by Mary Grace’s mother, Grace, her older brother, Nathaniel, her youngest sister, Merry Christelle, and Mary Grace’s 6-year-old son, John Allen.

The newlyweds exchanged silver wedding rings bought at a local store.

Mary Grace told the Inquirer she met Houssam, a laboratory engineer working for a research and development company, on Facebook eight months ago, and they developed a liking for each other. She had expected to meet him in person in May next year when he planned to come to the country. They had in fact already talked online about marriage.

The newlyweds plan to settle in Canada, along with little John Allen, once the major surgeries on Mary Grace’s wrist, chin and leg are completed.

In the meantime, Houssam said he would do some home-based work via the Internet from this city while looking after Mary Grace.

Outpouring of help

Two days after his blog went out, he was able to raise close to half a million pesos, which will be used for Mary Grace’s continuing treatment. He thanked his company and friends for helping him raise the money. He also sold his car in Montreal for additional funds.

Yet something more happened through all this. After the immediate medical emergency had passed, on Nov. 19, Houssam proposed marriage to Mary Grace.

“It’s the real stuff that we passed through,” he later told the Inquirer.

Houssam tends to Grace's wounds

On Saturday evening, a Muslim Imam agreed to come to the hospital to perform the wedding rite, asking  Houssam to repeat the word “Yes” three times to the question, “Do you accept Mary Grace to be your  wife until the day of judgment?”

Mary Grace, who still could not walk, had put on a white-lace blouse. Her left arm in a sling, and stitches crisscrossing her face, she sat up on the hospital bed as the Imam read the rite.

Houssam ran to the Philippine Coast Guard office to plead for help. A Coast Guard officer, whose name he could not recall, facilitated their transport on a ferry to Cebu.

Houssam and Grace on a ferry to Cebu

Arriving in Cebu at midnight of Nov. 15, Houssam rushed Mary Grace to a private hospital where she underwent a series of surgeries.

Grace arriving in Cebu

Beside her hospital bed, Houssam launched a blog called “Operation Saving Grace” where he narrated how he ended up in Ground Zero and appealed for donations. He had already spent close to P500,000 and much still needed to be done.

“I don’t know until now how I made it out of Ormoc with her. I still cannot believe it. I realized that no matter what I could do, nothing would have prepared me for this. It was more like a special forces situation. If I had waited only a few days she could have lost her leg,” Houssam said in his blog entry posted on Nov. 16.

Heroic saga

Houssam’s heroic saga began when he landed in Cebu on Nov. 14. He checked into a hotel, but he was so worried about the lack of news on Mary Grace that he picked up his backpack and headed straight for the port of Cebu that same day. He got on a ferry at 11 a.m., reaching storm-ravaged Ormoc City, not far from Tacloban, at 2 p.m.

Grace's family's ravaged home (the green one) in Ormoc

Mary Grace’s brother brought him to a private clinic where he saw his online fiancee face-to-face for the first time. She was in bad shape. Her jaw, left leg, left arm, wrist and some fingers were broken, and she had deep cuts in the face and body. She badly needed surgery, including one to save her left leg from amputation.

Houssam knew he had to get her out of Ormoc and into a hospital fast. He paid her bills but since the clinic could not even provide her a wheelchair, Houssam carried her out, walking about 15 minutes before he found a tricycle to take them to the port.

All ferry tickets, however, had been sold out. Thousands of passengers, including those from worst-hit Tacloban City, had flocked there and were desperate to get out.

Saving Grace: Canadian rushes to Ormoc to rescue fiancee

By Carmel Lois Matus
Inquirer Visayas
November 25, 2013

CEBU CITY, Philippinesâ€"Days before Supertyphoon Yolanda slammed Eastern Visayas killing thousands, an online romance was blooming between Houssam Hammoudi, a 31-year-old Canadian Muslim based in Montreal, and Mary Grace Acojedo, 22, of Ormoc City in Leyte.

When suddenly all communication via Facebook and Skype stopped on that tragic Nov. 8 and scenes of horrific devastation began trickling out through the media, Houssam was gripped with anxiety. He immediately took a leave from work and set off to rescue his Filipino fiancee.

Saving Grace, a mission he undertook alone with single-minded determination and hope, saw him fighting his way through jam-packed airports and seaports to reach Leyte, making his way through rubble and debris, and virtually carrying his girlfriend on his back to get her to a hospital in Cebu for urgent surgery.

This love story in a time of disaster has a moving ending. On Saturday, Nov. 23, Houssam and Mary Grace, who is on her way to recovery, were wed in Islamic rites in a hospital room here.

The idea for a Catholic cricket club was the brainchild of John McCarthy, Australia's ambassador to the Vatican. He wanted to see something similar to the Clericus Cup, a soccer tournament among the religious colleges and seminaries of Rome.

Most of the practice for the Vatican team will take place on the grounds of seminaries in Rome but McCarthy, a cricket fanatic, said he had a dream.

"I would suggest that at least on one occasion there would be batting practice in front of St Peter's Basilica."

When a reporter suggested that, given the historical baggage both Churches are carrying, the umpire should perhaps be a Muslim, a Jew or even a atheist, Moxon laughed and said: "As long as he is fair."

(Reporting By Philip Pullella, editing by Pritha Sarkar)

http://ph.news.yahoo.com/
#15749
The Vatican team will wear the official colours of the tiny city-state - yellow and white - and their jackets will have the seal of the papacy, two crossed keys.

By all accounts Pope Francis is not much of a cricket man. He still supports the San Lorenzo football club of his native Buenos Aires, who came to Rome this week to give him the league trophy they won last Sunday.

"But I think this is something that goes in line with one of the objectives of Pope Francis, which is to reach out and not stay within our own security zone," said O'Higgins.

ECUMENICAL SPORTS

Asked if a combination of sports diplomacy and inter-religious dialogue could help improve relations between the two Churches, which split in 1534 when King Henry VIII broke with Rome, Moxon said: "It will introduce a conversation piece all over the world whenever Catholics and Anglicans get together," he said.

"I think it can only do good and increase the bonds of affection we have for each other."

The Vatican side will be coached by Brother K.M. Joseph, an Indian who trained a number of future test players while they were at schools run by his religious order in India.
#15751
Moxon took a dig at Australia, who thrashed England 3-0 to win back the Ashes trophy earlier this week.

"He (the Archbishop of Canterbury) also wanted me to say quite emphatically that in receiving this challenge he has actually forgiven the Australian cricket team," Moxon said.

The Vatican team will be made up of seminarians and priests in Rome from countries with a cricket tradition - India, Pakistan, Australia, England, Bangladesh and New Zealand.

Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, head of the 80 million strong worldwide Anglican communion, accepted through his representative to the Vatican, Archbishop David Moxon.

Moxon said plans were for the match to be held at Lord's in September after the Anglican side puts together a similar team of amateurs from Lambeth Palace, the residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and nearby theological schools.

Father Eamonn O'Higgins, a priest who is organizing the Vatican side, gave Moxon the ball that will be used in the match.

Cricket holy war on as Anglicans accept Vatican challenge

By Philip Pullella | Reuters
December 20, 2013

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Let the holy war begin. The holy war of cricket, that is.

The Church of England on Friday formally took up the Vatican's challenge to settle scores on the cricket pitch nearly 500 years after the two Churches split.

Last October, the Vatican formed the St. Peter's Cricket Club, a league composed of teams of priests and seminarians from Catholic colleges and seminaries in Rome.

The best players will form a Vatican team, called the "Vatican XI," and challenged the Church of England to form its own team of Anglican priests and seminarians to play in London at Lord's, the home of cricket.

The sad fact is that people in power continue to find the need to flex muscle at the slightest opportunity, and take umbrage when crossed, and cry malice, cry persecution, when found out and exposed. An overweening sense of entitlement prompted Mayor Binay to behave the way he didâ€"that is, pull rank over the low men on the totem and force them to violate rules, through the instruments of the state no lessâ€"and Senator Binay to countenance it. In fact the halfway attentive observer will consider it a no-brainer: Given that there was no life-and-death situation involved, the siblings, being privileged people from whom much is expected, should have paused to think of how the muscle-flexing incident could possibly embarrass their father, Vice President Jojo Binay. But it turns out that the former human rights lawyer thinks nothing of it, and thinks his son deserved passage even if it’s against the rules.

“Privilege, you see,” wrote Chinua Achebe, “is one of the great adversaries of the imagination; it spreads a thick layer of adipose tissue over our sensitivity.”

http://opinion.inquirer.net/
#15757
And indeed the guards who were sufficiently spirited to enforce the village rules were subsequently taken by the policemen called by Mayor Binay, brought to the police station, and released four hours later, as told to the Inquirer. How strange that these guards would “volunteer to go with the police,” as Salgado now alleges (and for “verification” of their firearm permits yet, as the Makati chief of police, Supt. Manuel Lucban, says).
#15758
That the president of Right Eight Security, the employer of the village guards, later apologized to the mayorâ€"“profusely,” per Makati City Hall spokesperson Joey Salgadoâ€"is puzzling, given that the guards were merely following the village policy of prohibiting the exit of vehicles through the gate on Banyan and McKinley after 10 p.m. Or maybe not entirely puzzling in view of the peculiar dynamics that rules fiefdoms such as Makati, where it would be folly for courtiers to be in dutch with the dynasty that has long ruled it.
#15759
That the mayor and his convoy, which included his sister, a senator of the realm, wanted to use a restricted exit gate and managed to do so by virtue of his position and despite the initial resistance of security guards acting in accordance with village rules is clear. That’s the problem right there, and under this administration that early on indicated its intention to change the scheme of things by banning the quintessential symbol of entitlement: the wang-wang. The video of the incident showed it, including the drawn firearms of the mayor’s guards, Sen. Nancy Binay’s presence at the scene, and the subsequent lifting of the metal barrier by members of the Makati police who arrived armed with high-powered weapons. A startling detailâ€"the umbrella held over the mayor’s head by an aide who faithfully trailed him on that rainless night, weirdly reminiscent of the parasol famously held by a chief justice over Imelda Marcos’ pompadour at one occasion in her family’s heydayâ€"somehow completed the picture of a powerful man claiming entitlement.

Feeling entitled

Philippine Daily Inquirer
Friday, December 20th, 2013

Was it an impossible inconvenience for the mayor of Makati to order his driver, aides, guards and other members of his four-vehicle convoy to go the extra 150 meters to reach the street through which they could make their exit from Dasmariñas Village according to its rules? What an excellent example the young man would have made, not least to his driver, aides, guards and other members of his convoy, if he did. What a lesson in leadership he would have imparted to them, and even to the village guards who would not let him through.

But Mayor Junjun Binay, in insisting on exiting through the gate on Banyan and McKinley Roads way past the allowable time on the night of Nov. 30, clearly illustrated the malaise that continues to afflict many, whether pooh-bah or petty bureaucrat, in these parts: a sense of entitlement. This malaise drives one to expectâ€"indeed demandâ€"privileging at every turn, whether in traffic or a queue, or, yes, at a street corner specified by a set of rules as impassable at a certain time of the night. It moves one to patronize, ridicule, threaten, or intimidate those on the low end of the pecking order. At the extreme, this malaise is known to compel one to bend the law or ignore it altogether, to help oneself to public funds, even to literally get away with murder.

Something funny happened on Gov. Junjun’s Davide’s way to Regional Trial Court Judge Bing Saniel’s office the other day. The guard at the Palace of Justice’s only open door failed to recognize him and refused him entry.

The governor’s innate good nature did not allow the incident to affect him. While others would have bullied their way through (“I am the governor, how dare you don’t recognize me!), Davide quietly retreated to the Capitol canteen, where he should by now be a familiar sight, and had his coffee there.

That’s character for you.

I have personally witnessed only two other public officials act the way Junjun did under similar circumstances. One was then governor and Malacañang executive committee vice chairman Eddie Gullas at the Sheraton Hotel in 1981. The other was the late vice governor Sal Fernandez at the gate of the Atlas Consolidated Mining and Development Corporation in 1973.

May their tribe increase.

Mayor Junjun goes around with a convoy of police bodyguards apparently to show that he’s the city’s boss.

The incident at the Dasmariñas Village was not the first time the mayor bared his fangs.

In the Dasmariñas incident, Junjun Binay was quoted by a source as saying to the guards, “Kilala ba ninyo ako? (Do you know me)?”

In another incident that took place at Rockwell Mall basement parking early this year, the younger Binay allegedly figured in an altercation with an Israeli whose car got ahead of his car in an empty parking slot.

During a heated exchange of words between Binay and the Israeli, the mayor allegedly blurted out to the foreigner, “Don’t you know me? I own this city.”

The Israeli left the country months later.

The Binays, the epitome of a political dynasty, think they own Makati City because of their power and influence.

The father is vice president of the Republic; and the children are senator, mayor and congresswoman.

The mother used to be mayor who temporarily manned the fort for her husband when his three consecutive terms expired.

If you go around the city, you’ll find the letter “B”â€"with a tailâ€"painted on walls in public places.

The “B” sign, which looks like a brand on cattle, stands for Binay, of course.

The three guards who didn’t raise the gate’s barrier to allow the Binays’ convoy to pass through were arrested by Makati policemen and detained for four hours. The Binay camp, however, said the guards voluntarily went to police headquarters.

The two children of Vice President Binay, Jun and Nancy, said the report on the incident was blown out of proportion by the Inquirer.

This, despite a 24-minute video of the incident.

The Binays not only want to show who’s the boss; they’re also not truthful.

The Binays of Makati

By Ramon Tulfo
Philippine Daily Inquirer
Friday, December 20th, 2013

MANILA, Philippines â€" A mango tree doesn’t bear a santol fruit.

Let’s not be surprised that Makati City Mayor Junjun Binay and his sister, Sen. Nancy Binay, acted the way they did when they were prevented by guards at the posh Dasmariñas Village from using a gate of the subdivision.

In 1986 when their father, Jejomar Binay, was still officer in charge of Makati, he ordered the closure of the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) clubhouse for refusing to let his children use the club’s swimming pool because they were not accompanied by a member.

I was a witness to the elder Binay’s abusive behavior. I couldn’t use the club gym at that time because of the closure.

heaven forbid.  yet it looks like binay senior is going to make it because he's more politically astute and is better at political organization than mar roxas.  i can't believe that the philippines deserves this family as political leaders, all at one time. :(

binay senior - current vice-president
binay wife - former congresswoman and mayor
binay junior - makati city mayor who gave cars to all barangay captains
binay daughter 1 - congresswoman, senior majority leader
binay daughter 2 - senator

let's see if our legislators are sane enough to push through with the proposed law against dynasties to save the country from this kind of arrogance.
