Question and Answer / Reply: Hillary or Obama???
January 29, 2008, 08:40:59 AM
Fortune, I thought a bit highly of you until this! lol  I have seen this in forwarded emails all through out.  To me, it doesn't matter and I believe I am a little bit smarter - just a little bit smarter than to believe those emails poisoning the minds of the people by associating Obama to the Muslims and what they did to America. It's kinda low though.  You just have to put the Hussein so people associate him to the infamous Hussein of Iraq. Isn't that funny?  See, somebody told me Obama is an Atheist and that's because why?  Because his mother was reportedly an atheist as said in this forwarded email and sealed confirmed by snopes?  hmmm...

hi, grazie! I read na 'Tuesdays' many years ago but it wasn't my copy. It's hard to find one gyud. I'll decide later today which book to read first. Is 'Veronica' nice?

I'm reading 'Blue like Jazz' these days. It's a witty book about christian spirituality. Someone lent me that book a long time ago and i had so many excuses not to read it. it felt that i know what the writer wants to share. i felt i don't need it because i'm a good christian anyway. (ha! mao ba gyud?) somehow, i know God has something to tell me. i started to read it again.

yes, naay national bookstore diri. it's in ICM.

Hello, Melrose!  I recommend Veronica Decides to Die.  It's a strange story but you'll learn more about the author thru this book.  How's that for a catch?

Tuesdays with Morie was a good one but after reading Mitch Albom's other two books Five People You Meet in Heaven and the For One More Day, I can't seem to decide which one I like best. Well, Five People You Meet in Heaven, it's nice because Philippines was part of it (the soldier having been to the Philippines during the war) and a couple of Tagalog sentences were written.  For One More Day, I also like it because it serves me a reminder that I shouldn't wait to be asked what I would do if I only have one more day to live.   Sige lang, Melrose, I will insert a book or two in the LBC box that my aunt is sending to the Philippines next month (I already sent two boxes before Christmas) and I will ask you then where to send it or you can swing by at my parents' house in Manga to get it on your way to get fresh seafood in our Manga mercado.

Like the recent Mir Space station, it will disintegrate/burn-out upon touching the earth's atmosphere.

However, I am worried of its being classified. Hope it is not one of those military nor spy satellites dubbed as "Starwars program" used during the Reagan administration, which may hold nuclear warheads.

Macks, I was listening to the discussion earlier today at the CNN and Fox News regarding this uncontrollable satellite.  You are right in saying that by the time the satellite reaches the earth's surface, it will be disintegrated already.  However, they were worrying about the toxic chemicals.  Anyhow, I think there's not really much to worry about because the size of this satellite is only the size of a school bus.

I remember is late 70s during my early elementary years the news about the skylab came to the radio airwaves.  It worried me no end that one day, this skylab was just going to drop to our dilapidated nipa roof.  I prayed so hard because my young mind didn't think our roof could sustain. hehehehe silly me.  But when I heard it landed somewhere in the Indian Sea and part of Australia, I sighed in relief and thanked God...

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A large U.S. spy satellite has lost power and propulsion and could hit the Earth in late February or March, government officials said Saturday.

A senior government official says lawmakers and other nations are being kept apprised of the situation.

The satellite, which no longer can be controlled, could contain hazardous materials, and it is unknown where on the planet it might come down, they said.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the information is classified as secret.

"Appropriate government agencies are monitoring the situation," said Gordon Johndroe, a spokesman for the National Security Council.

"Numerous satellites over the years have come out of orbit and fallen harmlessly. We are looking at potential options to mitigate any possible damage this satellite may cause."

He would not comment on whether it is possible for the satellite to be perhaps shot down by a missile. He said it would be inappropriate to discuss any specifics at this time.

A senior government official said that lawmakers and other nations are being kept apprised of the situation.

The largest uncontrolled re-entry by a NASA spacecraft was Skylab, the 78-ton abandoned space station that fell from orbit in 1979. Its debris dropped harmlessly into the Indian Ocean and across a remote section of western Australia.

In 2000, NASA engineers successfully directed a safe de-orbit of the 17-ton Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, using rockets aboard the satellite to bring it down in a remote part of the Pacific Ocean.

In 2002, officials believe debris from a 7,000-pound science satellite smacked into the Earth's atmosphere and rained down over the Persian Gulf, a few thousand miles from where they first predicted it would plummet.

JAKARTA, Indonesia (CNN) -- Former Indonesian dictator Haji Muhammad Suharto -- the "smiling general" who ruled his country with an iron fist for three decades -- died Sunday at a hospital in Jakarta, said his doctor. He was 86.

He was rushed to Pertamina Hospital on January 4 for treatment of a failing liver, heart and lungs, his doctors said.

He had been suffering at home for five days.

His death comes just a day after his doctors said he appeared to be making a remarkable recovery.

Suharto, who, like other Indonesians, only has one name, was president of Indonesia from 1967 until he was forced to resign -- under immense political pressure -- in 1998.

He is credited with shaping modern Indonesia by boosting the economy and making the sprawling archipelago a regional power.

However, he also reigned as the nation was beset by internal corruption and, at the end of his rule, economic decline.

"He was known as the smiling general. He could be very charming, but behind that smile was this streak of steel," said Richard Woolcott, Australia's former ambassador to Indonesia.

"In the short term, he'll probably be judged fairly harshly by Australian critics and others in the West, but in the longer term, I suspect historians will see his contributions to Indonesia in a very positive light," Woolcott told CNN

January 27, 2008, 01:33:40 PM
Thanks for this article, Dong!  It's interesting.

After my Mom's major surgery to remove her left kidney, she was so critical and had life support.  The moment she was able to speak, she was crying because she said had NDE.  She vividly narrated to us what happend.  She said she entered in a white room and there she saw my baby sister who died when she was just about to turn 10 due to a vehicular accident.  She also saw her mother and her grandmother , among other dead relatives.  She said she was crying when she saw them and my grandmother (my Mom's mother) asked her what she was doing there!  My Mother said she had a surgery and it was because of me that she had to go through surgery. (I actually begged her to go through surgery because the doctors believed she wasn't going to last longer if she didn't.)  My mother said her mother sternly told her to go back because she still has young children and my Dad needed her badly.  We actually all badly needed my mother. My said she felt confused at first then she turned her head and she saw our youngest sister weeping profusely.  She then tried all her might to move and then she realized that my sister was just in front of her at the ICU.  What was so strange was that, my sister was there because I called the Head Nurse and begged and pleaded to her to let my two sisters go inside the ICU so my Mom would know she wasn't alone. The Nurse told hesitantly said ok but only one at a time and not for so long.  And so my sister was there when my Mom "tried" to go back to the land of the living.

January 27, 2008, 09:55:00 AM
This is really true, Blaue!  As what you have in your quote (by Alexander Pope),  To err is human; to forgive is divine.

It's so easy to justify our anger by getting angry and lashing bad words but most of the time once all's well, we have regrets saying most of what had been said. I am not saint, I got angry as well and a lot of times but I have made this Matthew verse a guiding star:

"It is not what enters into the mouth that defiles the man, but what proceeds out of the mouth, this defiles the man."

When St. Peter asked for explanation what this parable means, Jesus answered:  everything that goes into the mouth passes into the stomach, and is eliminated? But the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders. These are the things which defile the man; but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile the man.”

Thanks for this info, Blaue!  When we remit money to home, our remittance center uses the PNB New York conversion rate.  Today the conversion was pegged at 40 pesos for a US Dollar.

I'm the chimpion! Ape trounces the best of the human world in memory competition
by FIONA MACRAE - More by this author »

Last updated at 15:55pm on 26th January 2008

When scientists found out that chimps had better memories than students, there were unkind comments about the calibre of the human competition they faced.

But now an ape has gone one better, trouncing British memory champion Ben Pridmore.

Ayumu, a seven-year-old male brought up in captivity in Japan, did three times as well as Mr Pridmore at a computer game which involved remembering the position of numbers on a screen.

And that's no mean feat - the 30-year-old accountant from Derby is capable of memorising the order of a shuffled pack of cards in under 30 seconds.

Photographic memory: Amyumu the chimpanzee trounced a British memory champion

Both chimp and man watched a computer screen on which five numbers flashed up at various positions before being obscured by white squares.

They then had to touch the squares in order of the numbers they concealed, from lowest to highest. When the numbers were shown for just a fifth of a second - the blink of an eye - Ayumu got it right almost 90 per cent of the time.

His human opponent scored a rather less impressive 33 per cent, Channel Five programme Extraordinary Animals will reveal.

Mr Pridmore, who spends his evenings memorising 400-digit numbers, ruefully acknowledged that he had met his match.

Ben Pridmore can memorise the order of a pack of cards in 30 seconds - but was beaten by a chimp
"I'd rather not be seen on TV doing worse than a chimpanzee in a memory-test," he said. "I'll never live it down!"

The TV tests follow scientific experiments which pitted Ayumu, along with several other young chimps, against a group of university students.

Ayumu was the clear champion, doing twice as well as the humans.

It is thought that young chimps are blessed with photographic memories, allowing them to remember patterns and sequences with amazing accuracy.

Professor Tetsuro Matsuzawa, the Kyoto University researcher behind both sets of experiments, said: "People still believe that humans are superior to chimpanzees in any domain of intelligence.

"That is the prejudice of the people.

"Chimpanzees can be clever in a specific task in comparison to humans."

Hello, Frau Bambi!

Mayor Cabaldon is so dignified man.  He kept his being a gay a secret for all these years until last year.  He was so cute though.  He talked first about the accomplishments of his city where he was and still is the mayor.  He also talked about plans for the future of the city and all that stuff, then he disclosed his being gay.  This is what he said, “The pressure and the stigma and sometimes the all too casual bigotry in this town made it painfully clear when I first ran for office that I could either serve this community or I could be a gay man. But I could not be both.”

Hi Pare!  Had heard about this newly  built-up "Home for the Aged" I think somewhere in Baclayon.   Only I'm not aware whether it is already going on for business and also about the monthly basic prices.

Mao ba Ms. Bambi naa na tay "Home for the Aged" sa Bohol?  I can't believe it kay we always take care naman jud of our elderly family members.  By the way, dili na acceptable dre ang term nato diha na "Home for the Aged" kay dili daw na politically correct na term.  Instead, they call here Home for the elderly or Senior Homes.

aloe vera is indeed a very plant. They use a lot of things from this plant.  I know this can help when your hair is thinning.  Just get a stalk and let rub in the scalp the sticky juice.

Hala nice jud kaayo ni nga video, Leo!  Salamat kaayo!  As I was watching the video, I was taking notes of the new places and things I wanna do pohon makapauli.  I want to do rock-climbing sa Francisco Dagohoy Cave, the water-tubing/rafting in Wahig River and of course, Convent Dining.  At first gusto nako tong nag suot2x sila sa caves but I felt eerie na kadugayan.  Tama tong gi ingon ni Mr. Jess Tirol na sacred na mga lugara.  We always felt sauna na naay dili ingon-nato ga pujo ana na mga lugara.  We also have a huge cave in Manga close to Uptown sa injo Gem naa sa Elli Hill.  I think it connects down to Taloto.  Naa daw mga kwarto2x didto but I never had the chance to go there except sa baba lang dapit.  There's also a lover's cave not so far from that huge cave.  By the way, myth ba tong gi ingon na dili mag grow ang rock formation if i touch sa hand kay naay body chemicals na maka deter sa growth?  I wonder what our Dodong Bran has to say about this.

Na mingaw ko nakita nako ang Kinampay na ube.  My maternal grandparents used to plan ube unya i reserve ang kinampay for special occasion.  It's nice to know na na mention sa adtong guy na we Boholanos considered ubi as sacred.  Naa pa diay na kay sa una pod, makahulog gani mi'g ubi, amo man jud i kiss like mag apologize para dili gabaan mi.  Funny and strange but that's what we were and still are.  Na remind diay pod ko sa other thread ni Fiel about the Ube Festival.

Sana someday pagpauli nato, naa pa ning mga lugara ug mga buluhaton for us to enjoy too.  Very beautiful Bohol, our Bohol!

Naka kaon na ko'g nangka from the can kay naa mi friend na Bicolana na ga serve ug Nangka na gi tuno-an gisubakan ug gagmay na shrimps.  I never thought it came from the can kay mura man true!

Ben, I think the government pays to take care of the elderly especially if they have social security benefits.  When I went to the care home today, there were lots of old people there.  Crying for help and I guess the nurses or caregivers there are used already to hear these old people pleading for help.  It's just so sad.  When we were young, I don't think our parents let us cry as much as they are crying now.  This woman that I visited today, she told me before she would rather die than be in a care home.  Well, she didn't have a chance because her children who are my friends wouldn't want to take her.  The first week she was in the care home right before Thanksgiving, she threatened to kill herself so her anti-depressant was doubled. Unbelievable!  I didn't want to see her again because it makes me feel so sad but then again, she is happy when I see her so that's why I still visit her.  I bring her food and we eat together.
#15272
That's true jud, Jun.  We have so much respect for our elderly people.  Here, they care more their pets than elderly.  I went to visit today an elderly friend in the care home with one of the daughters. I used to keep this old woman company while she was still in her house.  When I saw her today, it crushed my heart to see her with big bruise in the left side of her face as if somebody paddled her face!  I was told she fell.  For the past 2 months that she is in the care home, she lost 26 pounds already.  She doesn't eat the food there.  I don't think I could ever do that to my own mother.  When I go home, I will sleep in between my parents to feel them and someday when they grow a bit older, we will build a house close to my parents so I can keep an eye on them and whenever they need me I will be there for them.

Hello too, Melrose! Yes, I'd say I am a fan of Coelho. I still have to read some of his books.  I read Zahir and Veronica Decides to Die and I can't remember what else.  I wanted to collect his books.  I only have two so far because most of the books I read I borrowed from the City Library.

I have Mitch Albom's Tuesdays with Morrie and his latest book, For One more Day.  I also have his Five People You Meet in Heaven.  PM me your address if you want me to send you some of these books.

Naa na diay ta'y National Bookstore?  Asa sya dapita diha sa Tagbilaran?  Thanks!

You would hopefully think that they have a liability fund for such stupididness the hearing is going well.
The driver is saying sori he knows he is the fault but the court still must follow the hearings. the next hearing is going to be on Feb, 1st.

Who cares where it comes from the baby's father is dead can you bring him back for any price?
Do I look like the city treasurer i am just pleased that we are getting some sort of care from the city government at all. Mo ba?

I wouldn't think there should be a "liability fund" for stupidness.  If that happens, it's giving people -  in this case, government workers, the license to be stupid.

Precious, I understand your frustration but no need to be fighty. The driver should be solely liable for this and if our provincial or city government has fund to help out victims, that is great.  My brother in law was killed while serving his country as a police officer.  He left behind a young wife (my sister, also a police officer) and three young kids - the youngest just turned 1 when his father died.  The government had some sort of pension but it stopped this month because it's is 5th death anniversary already.  It didn't make sense to me but such is life in the Philippines. As for the case of the victim's child, at least this poor child has grandparents  and family in the USA who may be able to support the baby and the victim's fiancee finacially.  Again, this is so tragic news and I know it's very difficult to the victim's parents and family here in the USA and more so to the child and to Pie but things happen beyond our control.  Financial support is very much needed especially to Pie and the baby but we can not demand this to anybody. That's my opinion which of course can be wrong.

And lastly, I and I think most of the TB people appreciate your concern and assistance to the victim's family.  You did good job!

hahahah that's good, Macks!  They make life more exciting by having all this mental activities plus they really complement each other: your Mom a good cook and your Dad got a green thumb.  That's really good!  I will someday get to see them and I'd love to spend some time with your Mom in the kitchen.  I look forward to that.  I hope that someday I can serve them a nice dinner and hope to God that your Mom will give me a "seal of approval" for my cooking. heheheheh  I want to believe that I am a good cook but not until a veteran cook like your Mom can say so!  My grandmoter was a good cook herself but she's gone.

hala ill check that Chardonay and merlot, im not so crazy about Shiraz Tiya...

Tiya if you go to Napa and Sonoma, walay bajad ang wine tasting didto and... pwerte ka daghan sa winery didto...

When that time that I worked there, kada uli naho mag wine tasting gyud ko sigi...

igo2x nga maabot ko sa balay hubog2x na!

hahahhahahaha

hala wala baja ko ma DUI sad adtong panahona!!!

Charles Shaw wines which can only be bought at Trader Joe's are award-winning wines.  They have Cabernaet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz, Merlot and Chardonnay.  Murage prefers the Chardonnay but we always have Merlot too because my cousins like Merlot.  If I make stew or pot roast or even humba, I used merlot as liquid.  It's good and as I said, Charles Shaw wines are inexpensive.

Maring, just got back from Whole Foods.  You asked me about the bread with seeds.  Did you mean the Challah bread with poppy seeds?

Haze, do you get charged for the wine tasting?

Late last year, we went to Apple Hill where there a lot of wineries.  We did some wine tasting - white or red wine.  Yes, they served with cheese and crackers too to clean the palate after tasting one wine.  I saw some food magazine guys doing the wine tasting.  I kind of kept an eye on what they are doing. They were swirling the wine glass then smell and took a small sip, flicker their eyes which looks like they were trying to understand the taste then sip some more and write something in their notes.  For the ordinary wines, we don't get charged but for the "reserved wines", they charged like 15 dollars.  We decided to just wine taste the regular chardonnay and merlot which was free and bought a reserved merlot with a reasonable amount of 25 dollars.

Beth, do you happen to have Trader Joe's in your place?  They sell the best Shiraz, Chardonnay and Merlot according to California wine tasters during the recent State Fair.  The brand name is Charles Shaw.  It's the cheap too - just 1.00.  I think this year, they bested a lot of wines even those costing about 10 dollars or more.  You can't beat 1.99 for a price which is also best-tasting wine!
