(Sun.Star Cebu)

The country's top broadcaster, ABS-CBN, citing hospital officials, said that Marcos "came in for control of her blood sugar", and that she had checked in to the hospital on Saturday night.

The beautiful and glamorous Marcos rose to fame as the wife of Ferdinand Marcos, who was elected president in 1965.

She became widely criticised for her extravagant lifestyle, spending heavily on clothes and jewelry and amassing a massive collection of shoes, even as most Filipinos remained trapped in poverty.

Her husband declared martial law in 1972 and appointed her as a special envoy, as well as handing her several top government positions. Her widespread power further fuelled resentment over corruption and abuse under the Marcos regime.

A popular revolt toppled the president in 1986 and sent the family fleeing into exile.

After her husband died in Hawaii in 1989, Imelda Marcos was allowed to return to the Philippines where she made a political comeback, elected to the legislature repeatedly.

AFP News/Ted Aljibe - Philippine former first lady Imelda Marcos (L) speaking to reporters inside her ancestral house in Batac town, Ilocos Norte province, on May 5, 2013

The jet-setting former first lady of the Philippines, Imelda Marcos has been hospitalised after suffering "fatigue", an aide said Sunday.

The widow of late dictator Ferdinand Marcos had just returned to the capital after a lengthy road trip from the province of Ilocos Norte, over 300 kilometres (186 miles) north of Manila, when she decided to check in to a hospital, said her media consultant Lito Gorospe.

"She was suffering from severe fatigue so she decided to be confined," he told AFP.

He declined to comment on the condition of the 84-year-old Marcos, who is a legislator representing the province of Ilocos Norte, home to her husband's family.

German cardinals and bishops tend to have lifestyles more like senior managers, with monthly salaries between $10,500 and $16,500 and chauffeur-driven sedans. The wealth inherent to them and the church more generally, will make adjusting to Francis’ new course more difficult, says Mathew Schmalz, theologian and professor at the College of the Holy Cross.

“The Roman Catholic Church in Germany is the definition of an ‘established’ church â€" it is wealthy, and has a special status recognized by the government,” Mr. Schmalz says.

For the moment, it remains unclear whether Francis will formally lean on the German Catholic Church to adjust its financing system or force dioceses to fully disclose their wealth.

But Schmalz believes that given Pope Francis’ example and popularity, it will become increasingly difficult for German bishops to flaunt their riches. “Following the suspension of the Bishop Tebartz-van Elst," he says, "German Catholic laity will also feel empowered to hold their bishops to the standard that Pope Francis is setting.”

LOSING LAITY

Christian Weisner, spokesperson for the German branch of the international church reformist movement "We Are Church," warns that the German Catholic Church needs to take serious steps, or it will continue to lose membership â€" currently estimated at 23 million.

Since the 1950s, a steady flow of members has quit their Church. Following the child-abuse scandal involving clergymen in 2010, that exodus swelled to 180,000. Although the rate has receded in years since (118,000 in 2012), latest forecasts place Christians in the minority in Germany by 2023.

“Attrition is not only due to religion becoming less central to people’s lives. It’s also because church officials are being trusted less,” Mr. Weisner says. He believes Jorge Mario Bergoglio, as Pope Francis was known while a cardinal, was elected precisely because the Catholic Church wanted to change course after the sexual abuse and Vatican bank scandals.

“People in the pews love Pope Francis and his Franciscan style. But especially in Germany, bishops are hindering reform and development like a layer of insulation between the pope and the public.”
#15215
“I would estimate the total wealth of the Cologne diocese at 3 billion euro [$4 billion], and not 166.2 million euro [$225.8 million] as it declared, for instance,” he says.

More than the wealth of the German Catholic Church, it is the lack of transparency surrounding its finances that irks German Catholics.

While Pope Francis seems determined to reform the Vatican Bank â€" which has allegedly turned a blind eye to tax fraud and money laundering â€" Germany’s post-war Constitution continues to grant the Church the right to administer itself without state interference.

Frerk says that despite a shift towards greater transparency, “formal control seems unlikely, because it would require the Vatican to step in and change church law.”

With all this money, the Catholic Church takes on more tasks than in many other countries. One in five hospitals is run by the Catholic Church, for example, as are many kindergartens, retirement homes, and the training of hundreds of priests in Latin America and Africa. Overall, this leads to the Catholic Church being one of Germany’s largest employers, with around 650,000 employees, according to the German Bishops Conference.

Still, these activities are financed with no more than 70 percent of the Church’s yearly intake, says Carsten Frerk, Germany’s foremost expert on church finances.

“It seems that between 50 to 60 percent of the annual intake goes toward paying employees’ salaries, and between 2 to 4 percent to charitable efforts. The church-run hospitals are entirely state-financed,” says Mr. Frerk, who has written two books on the German Catholic Churches’ wealth and their “opaque” bookkeeping.

Dioceses have now taken first steps to disclose those secret fortunes. But Frerk says the published numbers are “a joke.”

CHURCH AND STATE

But the scandal has spurred a change. Several dioceses, including Cologne, Hamburg, Essen, and Münster, have disclosed their wealth.

For centuries, the German Catholic Church has been operating a type of dual-accounting system.

Public funds are documented and disclosed. Every year, the state directly finances Germany’s Protestant and Catholic churches with approximately $680 million to compensate for the expropriations under Napoleon in 1803. Christian churches further levy an annual tax from their members (8 to 9 percent of their income tax, depending on the state). The system brought the Catholic Church a record $7.1 billion in revenue last year.

However, the 27 Catholic dioceses also possess undisclosed pots of money. These include assets such as real estate or bonds, which are recorded in a kind of shadow budget that, until recently, only the bishop and his closest aides were privy to.

Pope Francis is also putting theory into practice.

Straight after his election in March, he symbolically shunned the red velvet mozetta preferred by his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, in favor of a more modest white vestment, and can currently be spotted driving around the Vatican in a gifted second-hand, decades-old jalopy.

His intention is for the Roman Catholic Church to strip itself of all “vanity” and humbly become “a poor church for the poor.”

It’s a message that stands in stark contrast to the Bishop of Limburg, Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst, whose personal requests for lavish fixtures such as a $20,000 bathtub for his private residence drove the cost of the bishopric estate’s renovation up to $43 million â€" more than five times the original estimate.

Trying to escape the firestorm that the renovations ignited, Tebartz-van Elst boarded a budget airline to Rome on Oct. 13 in hopes of gaining an audience with the pope. For eight days, he waited in uncertainty. Then Francis saw him for 20 minutes on Oct. 21, only to suspend him indefinitely two days later.

It's not a strong enough response, some Germans say. “I think Tebartz-van Elst should have been stripped of his post. There’s no way he can ever be a role model again,” says Jeanny Müller, a Catholic from Munich.
#15219
The uproar over Bishop Tebartz-van Elst's $47 million in renovations may be a tipping point for the German Catholic Church, whose officials' lifestyle clashes with the pope's austerity.

Christian Science Monitor
By Nele Obermüller

As a scandal-ridden bishop withdrew to a monastery in deep Bavaria for a "spiritual time of recovery" this past week, Germany continues to debate how symptomatic Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst, the so-called “Bishop of Bling,” is of the German Catholic Church.

For years, no one batted an eye at the institution’s estimated $365 billion fortune, which includes one of the world’s richest dioceses in Cologne â€" with wealth rivaling or even topping that of the Vatican.

But the paradigm shift under the new pope has placed the church under serious scrutiny and pressure to change its ways.

“The wealth of the German Catholic Church is not a new problem, as the vow of poverty is an integral part of the faith,” says Markus Thurau, a theology professor at the Free University of Berlin. “But it is only now, under Pope Francis, that this tenet is being pushed.”

Japan is seeking to broaden its defense ties, in addition to its key security alliance with the United States, in response to China's growing military presence and threats from North Korea.

Russia has been expanding its trade ties in Asia and President Vladimir Putin has actively sought closer relations with Japan, partly as a counter to China's rising military power.

Lavrov, however, said that Russia would not commit to friendly relations with one party as a way to antagonize another. He was responding to a question about the significance of the new Japan-Russia defense cooperation to counter China's growing marine presence.

It's unclear how much progress is being made toward a resolution of a dispute over four islands that were seized by Soviet forces at the end of World War II. The dispute has kept the two nations from signing a peace treaty formally ending their World War II hostilities.

Japan and Russia have also stepped up cooperation in developing energy resources, especially liquefied natural gas. Kishida said trade between the two countries totaled a record $33 billion last year, and that further growth is expected this year.
#15236
Lavrov told a news conference after yesterday's talks that upgrading defense ties between the two countries could serve their national interests in resolving terrorism and North Korea's nuclear threats, as well as other regional disputes. He welcomed the talks as a landmark development for Russia and Japan, and said that this new cooperation would not interfere with the Japan-US alliance.

Kishida also said that Japan's alliance with Washington remains "the cornerstone" of Tokyo's foreign and security policy.

Earlier Friday, Japan and Russia agreed to continue discussing a territorial dispute that has kept the nations from signing a peace treaty.

"We need to act constructively. We should not be emotional, and avoid provocative remarks," Lavrov said in Friday's news conference.

The diplomats also agreed to hold vice-ministerial talks in late January or February, ahead of Kishida's planned visit to Russia in the spring.

Lavrov did not mention an attack on Russian missiles in Latakia in Syria. Kishida said he and Lavrov planned to discuss Syria, Iran, Afghanistan and other international issues at Friday's working dinner, which was closed to the media.

TOKYO â€" Japan and Russia held their first high-level defense and diplomatic talks yesterday and agreed to step up cooperation between their militaries amid regional security concerns such as North Korea and China.

Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida and Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera, and their Russian counterparts Sergei Lavrov and Sergei Shoigu also agreed to hold joint military and anti-piracy exercises and establish a defense consultation framework. Their countries' defense ties are geared up toward peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region and would not affect existing alliances, including one between Japan and the US, they said.

Houses of the dead

Cemeteries, nowadays, are not only for people to bury their dead in. It has been transformed into a special haven to celebrate life, according to Joyce Gonzalez, Loyola marketing manager.

In fact, Gonzalez said droves frequent cemeteries not only during All Saints' or All Souls' Day but even on special occasions like the death anniversaries and their birthdays.

"Nasa kultura na rin kasi natin 'yan na kapag birthday nung namatay ay pumupunta sila doon para mag celebrate. Cemeteries now are a place for family reunions and celebrations," Gonzalez said.

But these resting places for the dead do not come cheap either. An average lot will cost you around P70,000.

The prices go higher, Gonzalez said, depending on the location of cemetery and the location inside the burial ground.

Lots are costlier if they are in a city than if they are situated in a town, she explained.

"This is because these lots are now considered as real estate property," she said.

"Kung mas malapit sa entrance gate or kung may parking area ka na dun eh mas mahal. It depends on its accessibility to the visitors," she added.

Going beyond a simple headstone or an epitaph to remember a dead loved one, some people with means have built edifice as a reminder.

Gonzalez said the much more high end "products" of Loyola are the mausoleums, whose prices range from P1 million to a whopping P5 million.

She noted that some of these mausoleums are fitted with air-conditioning units for the comfort of the visiting family members, relatives and friends.

Even though these mausoleums are good enough for the living to reside in,  Gonzalez said they discourage family members from doing so.

"Just keep them clean when they leave the place. It's all a question of sanitation," she said, noting that some of the restrictions now imposed in all cemeteries are there to keep people from abusing the use of these places.

With regard to the price of cremation and urns which hold the human ashes after being cremated, Dela Paz said the most common or standard will fetch more than P13,000.

"Ang standard namin ay yung P13,750 with marble urn na yung kasama," he said.

He added that more Filipinos are becoming comfortable about the idea of cremation as it is more practical and relatively cheaper in the long run.

"In a month, nakaka 60 to 70 cremations kami. Minsan nga ay umaabot ng 100," Dela Paz said.

He said that the company's two machines, imported from South Korea, is regularly working at least six to seven cremations daily.

"Dati kasi umaabot ng apat na oras ang cremation. Pero ngayon one and half hour na lang," he said.

Dela Paz added that the company is doing its part by donating or giving discounts to indigents who are in need of caskets.

"Kapag may iniwan dito na casket sa amin at meron nangangailangan na indigent, dino-donate na lang namin. Pero nahihirapan kami kapag babies ang namatay kasi konti na lang ang gumagawa ng malilit ng casket," he said.

Gabriel dela Paz, supervisor of the crematorium department of Loyola Memorial Park in Marikina City, said that multi-million peso funeral service includes a larger chapel that could accommodate as much as 150 persons.

"May catering na rin at maraming amenities na kasama. May photo at video coverage, may obituaries at pupuniin ang bulaklak yung paligid," Dela Paz said.

He said the services they give to their grieving clients also depend on the type of casket the family members and relatives want for their dead.

"Meron ding kaming package dito na P75,000 which can vary kung full glass na kita pati ang paa o yung half lang," dela Paz said, referrring to the types of casket.

He said that they also rent out caskets which cost P60,000.

Dela Paz said that a premium package, which includes casket and the chapel where the body would be placed and the number of days for funeral service, ranges from P150,000 to P350,000.

He added that the price range varies with the type of material used for the urn, which could vary from imported brass metal to wood, noting that a gold urn alone can fetch as much as P28,000.

MANILA, Philippines - Imagine laying on your deathbed with only one thing in your mind when you leave this world: the cost of dying.

With the rising cost of goods and services nowadays,  a simple burial of a deceased loved one can set you back several thousands of pesos.

But for a few affluent families in the country, money is not an issue, with some spending as much as P4.5 million just to give their dearly departed the best that  money can buy.

Hmm, you ARE a nukekubi until proven otherwise. As things stand:

1. Clearly, you either do not recall your dreams, or are in a state of denial. Or, for some odd reason you always see your room at odd angles even when awake.

2. You have been made to believe that you are 100& Chinese, but you could very well be half-Japanese. (In which case you are even more frightening because what would be wandering at night is only half your head.)

Be consistent. A common blunder many pet owners make is to say "no" and pet the cat at the same time. This is very confusing to the cat. So for example, if you want your cat to go away, a firm "later" and gentle push, without showing affection, will let the cat know that her presence is not desired at this time. Most cats will try two to three times to invade a person's space, often from different directions. When saying "Later", be patient.

Develop a "command tone" to use with your cat when he or she is doing something that you consider to be wrong. Use a voice that comes naturally to you and can be replicated easily, but that is also distinct from your everyday talking voice. If you use this voice sparingly but seriously, your cat will learn to associate the voice with the idea that he or she is displeasing you.

Make a quick and sharp hiss or spit sound as a "no" command. This is similar to the sound made by his or her own kind when they say "no."

3 Talk back to your cat.

As already mentioned, cats are always learning how to communicate with us. The more that you communicate with your cat, the faster he or she will learn.

Use a slightly raised tone of voice to indicate friendliness and a lowered tone of voice to indicate displeasure or aggression.

Repeat the same word, sleep or bed, each time you go to bed. Eventually, your cat will begin to associate the repetitive word sound with your actions and may even get to the bedroom before you. Use the word shower consistently each time you are ready to take one, and eventually your cat may beat you to the bathroom and even curl up in the sink to wait for you.

If you blink slowly when making eye contact with your cat, she will usually respond by coming over to be stroked. This is seen as a very non-threatening gesture.

Rubbing against you: This means your cat is marking you as his or her own
Wet nose "kiss": An affectionate gesture when the cat taps his or her wet nose to you
Ears back: Fear, anxiety, or in a very playful mood; also used when sniffing something they want to know more about
Tongue flicks out slightly and licks lower lip: Worried, apprehensive
Rubbing head, flank and tail against a person or animal: Greeting ritual
Head-butting: Friendliness, affection
Face sniffing: Confirming identity
Kneading: A cat will rhythmically knead with his or her paws, alternating between the right and left feet, as a sign of happiness, contentment, or playfulness; it means your cat knows and trusts you
Licking: The ultimate sign of trust. Your cat may consider you to be a part of her family, like a mother cleaning her kittens. It might just be that you have something tasty in your hand though.
Tries to eat your hair: Your cat is probably trying to "groom" you. This means your cat really loves you and trusts you

2 Watch your cat.

Since cats are more "fluent" in body language, certain gestures will accompany vocalizations to reinforce their message.

Tail straight up with a curl at the end: Happy
Tail twitching: Excited or anxious
Fur on tail sticking up: Very excited
Tail vibrating: Very excited and happy to see you
Tail fur sticks straight up while the tail curls in the shape of an N: Extreme aggression
Tail fur sticks straight up but the tail is held low: Aggressive or frightened
Tail held low and tucked under the rear: Frightened
Dilated pupils: Very playful or excited; it can also mean aggression or fear
Slowly blinking eyes: Affection, indicating the cat is comfortable with whoever might be around him or her
Lifting the nose and tilting the head back slightly: "I acknowledge you." Cats sitting in windows may greet you in this manner as you walk by

Steps

1 Listen to your cat.

If you watch what your cat is doing when he/she meows, you may be able to distinguish which meows are associated with which requests (or protests).[3] Some common meows can include:

Short meow: Standard greetings
Multiple meows: Excited greetings
Mid-pitch meow: Plea for something like food, or water
Drawn-out mrrroooow: A demand for something
Low pitch MRRRooooowww: A complaint, or displeasure or fight
Lower than mid pitch MEEOOOOOOwww: Begging, for something such as food.
High-pitch RRRROWW!: Anger, pain, or being fearful
Chatter (rapid teeth-chattering): Excitement, frustration
Chirrup (a cross between a meow and a purr with rising inflection): Friendly greeting sound, often used by a mother cat to call to her kittens
Purr: Invites close contact or attention
Hiss: A serious sign of aggression. if unhappy, scared or fighting

The explosion of a truck-size asteroid over Chelyabinsk, Russia, this past February â€"which blew out windows throughout the entire city and injured more than 1,000 people â€"helped draw public attention to what the panelists described as the often-overlooked and underappreciated threat to the planet.

"It did make a difference in policymakers realizing that this is not just a science-fiction concept, or something that will happen in 100 or 500 years in the future," Thomas Jones, former NASA astronaut and senior research scientist at the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition, told SPACE.com at the news conference. "The fact that it happened right now, I think, enforced the reality."

The recommendations that the group presented to the United Nations this week provide an outline of what governments will ultimately implement in the event of an emergency. However, the details of these recommendations are still in the works, Schweickart said.

"The question is, which way do you move [the asteroid]?" former NASA astronaut and B612 co-founder Russell Schweickart said in the news conference. "If something goes wrong in the middle of the deflection, you have now caused havoc in some other nation that was not at risk. And, therefore, this decision of what to do, how to do it and what systems to use have to be coordinated internationally. That's why we took this to the United Nations."

The panel hopes that the discussions with the United Nations this week â€"which extend from discussions dating back to 2008, when the panel presented the United Nations with the first draft of a report titled "Asteroid Threats: A Call for Global Response" â€"will improve public awareness of the threats at hand, and encourage policymakers to develop plans and appoint leaders to deal with threats in a timely manner.

To help achieve this goal, Lu co-founded an organization called the B612 Foundation in 2002. Today, the group is developing a privately built infrared space telescope â€" called the Sentinel Space Telescope â€" with the sole purpose of locating threatening asteroids. The foundation hopes to launch the telescope by 2018.

The Sentinel telescope will help space agencies identify threatening near-Earth objects years before they hit Earth, providing governments and space agencies with enough time to take action, Lu and his colleagues said. Such action would entail deploying a spacecraft â€" or multiple spacecrafts, depending on the size of the space rock â€" toward the asteroid in order to smack it off course.

The technology and funds to deflect an asteroid in this way already exist, the panel explained, but the Association of Space Explorers, a group that includes active and retired astronauts, decided to involve the United Nations in their decision-making efforts to avoid nationally biased action in the event of an emergency.
#15286
Scientists estimate that there are roughly 1 million near-Earth asteroids that could potentially pose a threat to the planet, but only a small fraction of these have actually been detected by telescopes. There are about 100 times more asteroids lurking in space than have ever been located, said Edward Lu, a former NASA astronaut and co-founder of the non-profit B612 Foundation advocating asteroid defense strategies. "Our challenge is to find these asteroids first, before they find us," Lu said.

NEW YORK â€" Members of the United Nations met with distinguished astronauts and cosmonauts this week in New York to begin implementing the first-ever international contingency plan for defending Earth against catastrophic asteroid strikes.

Six of the space travelers involved in these U.N. discussions discussed the asteroid defense effort Friday (Oct. 25) in a news conference hosted by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson at the American Museum of Natural History. Their goal: to drive home the very-real threats posed by near-Earth objects (NEOs), or asteroids traveling within the radius of Earth's orbit with the sun.

Weird and Extreme / Nukekubi: The Prowling Head
October 28, 2013, 12:38:12 PM

Japanese folklore contains the legend of a vampire-like creature called the nukekubi, meaning “prowling head.” By day, a nukekubi is largely indistinguishable from an ordinary person. At night, however, its head detaches from the neck and flies away. The flying head of the nukekubi preys on mortal flesh: Once it has found its victim, it emits a paralyzing scream before going in for the kill. Often the nukekubi has no idea what they are. They might only recall dreams of seeing their room from odd angles. To vanquish a nukekubi, you must find its idle body at night and destroy it, thereby also killing the head. There is one way to identify a nukekubi by day: They will have two or three wrinkles along the bottom of their neck. -- http://listverse.com/

Reed made just three more albums with the Velvet Underground before leaving in 1970. Cale was pushed out by Reed in 1968 (they had a long history of animosity) and was replaced by Doug Yule. Their sound turned more accessible, and the final album with Reed, "Loaded," included two upbeat musical anthems, "Rock and Roll" and "Sweet Jane," in which Reed seemed to warn Velvets fans â€" and himself â€" that "there's even some evil mothers/Well they're gonna tell you that everything is just dirt."

His albums in the '70s were praised as daring experiments or mocked as embarrassing failures, whether the ambitious song suite "Berlin" or the wholly experimental "Metal Machine Music," an hour of electronic feedback. But in the 1980s, he kicked drugs and released a series of acclaimed albums, including "The Blue Mask," ''Legendary Hearts" and "New Sensations."

He played some reunion shows with the Velvet Underground and in 1990 teamed with Cale for "Drella," a spare tribute to Warhol. He continued to receive strong reviews in the 1990s and after for such albums as "Set the Twilight Reeling" and "Ecstasy," and he continued to test new ground, whether a 2002 concept album about Edgar Allan Poe, "The Raven," or a 2011 collaboration with Metallica, "Lulu."

They were joined by a friend of Reed's from Syracuse, guitarist-bassist Sterling Morrison; and by an acquaintance of Morrison's, drummer Maureen Tucker, who tapped out simple, hypnotic rhythms while playing standing up.

They renamed themselves the Velvet Underground after a Michael Leigh book about the sexual subculture. By the mid-1960s, they were rehearsing at Warhol's "Factory," a meeting ground of art, music, orgies, drug parties and screen tests for films. The screen tests were projected onto the band while it performed.

"Warhol was the great catalyst," Reed told BOMB magazine in 1998. "It all revolved around him. It all happened very much because of him. He was like a swirl, and these things would come into being: Lo and behold multimedia. There it was. No one really thought about it, it was just fun."

The Velvets juxtaposed childlike melodies with dry, affectless vocals on "Sunday Morning" and "Femme Fatale."
#15297
He was one of rock's archetypal tough guys, but he grew up middle-class â€" an accountant's son. He hated school, loved rock n' roll, fought with his parents and attacked them in song for forcing him to undergo electroshock therapy as a supposed "cure" for being bisexual. "Families that live out in the suburbs often make each other cry," he later wrote.

At Syracuse University, he studied under Schwartz, whom Reed would call the first "great man" he ever encountered. He credited Schwartz with making him want to become a writer and to express himself in the most concrete language possible.

Reed honored his mentor in the song "My House," recounting how he connected with the spirit of the late, mad poet through a Ouija board.

Reed moved to New York City after college and traveled in the pop and art worlds, working as a house songwriter at the low-budget Pickwick Records and putting in late hours in downtown clubs. One of his Pickwick songs, the dance parody "The Ostrich," was considered commercial enough to record. Fellow studio musicians included a Welsh-born viola player, John Cale, with whom Reed soon performed in such makeshift groups as the Warlocks and the Primitives.
#15298
Known for his cold stare and gaunt features, he was a cynic and a seeker who seemed to embody downtown Manhattan culture of the 1960s and '70s and was as essential a New York artist as Martin Scorsese or Woody Allen.

Reed's New York was a jaded city of drag queens, drug addicts and violence, but it was also as wondrous as any Allen comedy, with so many of Reed's songs explorations of right and wrong and quests for transcendence.

He had one Top 20 hit, "Walk on the Wild Side," and many other songs that became standards among his admirers, including "Heroin," ''Sweet Jane," ''Pale Blue Eyes" and "All Tomorrow's Parties."

An outlaw in his early years, Reed would eventually perform at the White House, have his writing published in The New Yorker and win a Grammy in 1999 for best long-form music video. The Velvet Underground was inducted into the Rock and Roll of Fame in 1996, and its debut album, "The Velvet Underground & Nico," was added to the Library of Congress' registry in 2006.
#15299
Reed never approached the commercial success of such superstars as the Beatles and Bob Dylan, but no songwriter to emerge after Dylan so radically expanded the territory of rock lyrics. And no band did more than the Velvet Underground to open rock music to the avant-garde â€" to experimental theater, art, literature and film, to William Burroughs and Kurt Weill, to John Cage and Andy Warhol, Reed's early patron.

Indie rock essentially began in the 1960s with Reed and the Velvets. Likewise, the punk, New Wave and alternative rock movements of the 1970s, '80s and '90s were all indebted to Reed, whose songs were covered by R.E.M., Nirvana, Patti Smith and countless others.

"The first Velvet Underground record sold 30,000 copies in the first five years," Brian Eno, who produced albums by Roxy Music and Talking Heads, among others, once said. "I think everyone who bought one of those 30,000 copies started a band!"

Reed's trademarks were a monotone of surprising emotional range and power; slashing, grinding guitar; and lyrics that were complex yet conversational, designed to make you feel as if Reed were seated next to you.

NEW YORK (AP) â€" Lou Reed, the punk poet of rock 'n' roll who profoundly influenced generations of musicians as leader of the Velvet Underground and remained a vital solo performer for decades, died Sunday at 71.

Reed died in New York state of an ailment related to his recent liver transplant, according to his literary agent, Andrew Wylie, who added that Reed had been in frail health for months. Reed shared a home with his wife and fellow musician, Laurie Anderson, whom he married in 2008.
