MIAMI (PRWEB) APRIL 10, 2020

World-renowned actor, director, and producer Laurence Fishburne (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laurence_Fishburne) is the host of the show "Behind The Scenes" with Laurence Fishburne. The educational program covers an extensive array of topics that uniquely impact people from coast to coast. A new episode will interview industry professionals about the methods and processes utilized in sustainable food production.

By 2050, the world's population will rise to an estimate of 9.1 billion. Food production will need to grow significantly to keep up with the expanding population. With more people on the planet, there is less room to grow food, which means the production of food will need to utilize less real estate. Also, the food will need to be nutritionally dense to provide people with a diverse diet that contains a balanced combination of nutrients and energy to support overall health. Sustainably producing food is key to meeting the needs of future generations.

Sustainable food production is a method that uses systems and processes that conserve non-renewable resources, is non-polluting, safe for workers, and is economically efficient. Producing food this way helps to minimize the impact food production methods have on the environment, which significantly impacts the world's ability to produce food in the future.

The new episode of "Behind The Scenes" will expand further upon sustainable food production methods with those intimately involved in the industry.

The educative program "Behind The Scenes" with Laurence Fishburne is carefully given inspection before broadcast to a larger viewing audience. "Behind The Scenes" has accepted multiple accolades for its endeavors.

PENSACOLA, FLA. (PRWEB) APRIL 10, 2020

18,777 pounds of vinyl regrind. 16,543 pounds of scrap cardboard and office paper. 800 pounds of scrap oil. All of this material is recycled each year at the Hy-Lite manufacturing operation in Pensacola, Fla.

In honor of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22nd, Hy-Lite is sharing information on the company's efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle. The manufacturer of acrylic block windows and panels started its recycling efforts in 2007. When the company's shipping supervisor, Myra Moore, got involved in 2015, additional attention was focused on enhancing the program.

"I truly believe we contribute to spoiling the earth with some of our lifestyle choices," says Moore, a resident of Pace, Fla. "This can be turned around and slowed down. I think recycling is the start. That's why I got more involved in our company efforts. Every piece of scrap paper, every soda can, and every cardboard box can be recycled."

Inspiring Others to Recycle
Moore's dedication to the recycling effort has spawned more awareness and involvement amongst coworkers. Waste is now looked at twice at Hy-Lite. Every item is scrutinized for the possibility of recycling or reusing.

"Right now we're regrinding and selling the scrap vinyl from our window frames," says Moore. "We have another company pick up other items like used oil and cardboard pieces. We also regrind our scrap acrylic from making our acrylic blocks.

"One of the most important ways we save is by reusing packaging materials from incoming supplies. We now salvage that material to ship our own product. We recycle all incoming pallets, boxes, foam and other packaging material."

Every Little Bit Helps
While the big efforts are important, Moore is perhaps proudest of her role is salvaging the smaller items. She collects food and beverage containers from the company's 27 employees and recycles them on a daily basis by taking them to a county collection site. Instead of throwing away batteries, electronics, fluorescent bulbs and aerosol cans, the company's maintenance team saves them so she can take them to designated local areas for recycling.

According to Moore, the passion for recycling has caught on at Hy-Lite. One employee takes home 55-gallon empty drums that silicone comes in. He recycled 96 drums in one year. And, each week Moore herself takes three bundles of plastic sheeting to Walmart's plastic recycling area. That's more than 144 large plastic bundles of sheeting a year.

"I am inspired to do a small part because I know it makes a big difference," says Moore. "I know anything that goes in the landfill never really goes away.

"As long as there are places that will take recyclable materials, we all have a choice. I'm constantly looking for opportunities to reduce, recycle and reuse. This gives our company the opportunity to be environmentally friendly while saving on dumpster fees and some packaging costs. This is a win-win situation."

Hy-Lite, a U.S. Block Windows Company, is the leading manufacturer of acrylic block, glass block and decorative glass windows. The company's privacy product options include acrylic block shutters, accent panels, radius walls, partition walls and door inserts. Since 1988, the Pensacola, Florida-based company has been committed to providing residential and commercial construction professionals and homeowners with elegant, affordable privacy window designs.

Skin Resource.MD, a therapeutic line of skincare products created by board-certified dermatologists and based out of San Diego, California, announced the optimization of two best-selling facial products, the reformulation and repackaging of Tea Tree Deep Clearing Cleanser (formerly Pore-Clearing Cleanser) and the resizing of the fan-favorite, Baobab Skin Correction Facial Cream after supplies were completely depleted. The baobab correction cream is now offered in environmentally-friendly packaging, and contains more ounces of product for the same price. Both products were formulated by practicing dermatologists.

The improved Tea Tree Deep Clearing Cleanser utilizes the same natural compounds, but with increased concentrations to optimize product effectiveness. These ingredients include tea tree oil and willow bark, the natural source of salicylic acid, to clean deep within pores and reduce inflammation. The optimized formula also includes an increased concentration of peppermint oil, to soothe and cleanse the skin, and sage leaf extract. Sage leaf extract contains Vitamin A and calcium which fight free radicals while preventing inflammation.

Tea Tree Deep Clearing Cleanser comes in an 8.45 fl oz bottle for $20 and can be purchased at SkinResouceMD.com.

The Baobab Skin Correction Facial Cream is the first facial correction cream utilizing the oil pressed from the baobab seed as the key ingredient and has returned to the shelves in environmentally-friendly packaging after a three-month wait. The move to repackage the best-selling correction cream occurred after the product sold out entirely and is an effort to reduce the overall environmental footprint of the product.

The baobab oil used in the skin cream contains high concentrations of Vitamins A, D, E, and F and fatty acids which are known for their ability to rejuvenate the skin, lessen the signs of aging, brighten skin, and help reverse sun damage. Baobab Skin Correction Facial Cream also addresses multiple specialty skin issues, including melasma, uneven skin tone, acne scars, and eczema.

The new Baobab Skin Correction Facial Creamcontains 2.5 fl oz, .8 fl oz more than its predecessor, and will be offered at the same price of $49. It is recommended to be used twice per day and is for sale online at SkinResourceMD.com.

"It is important to us to continually update and optimize our products based on the current science and practice of dermatology to provide our patients and customers the best products at the best price."

Both products were co-created by Christopher V. Crosby, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.A.D., and Paul B. These new products supplement the brand's selection of therapeutic skincare products that include moisturizers, cleansers, serums, sunscreens and exfoliants. The brand also offers products specifically formulated for particular conditions as well as kits intended for use following medical procedures.

PORTLAND, ORE. (PRWEB) APRIL 13, 2020

A coalition representing counties, business and labor has reached an agreement with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service that will initiate a public regulatory rule-making process for reevaluating critical habitat designated for the Northern Spotted Owl (NSO) under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The agreement was filed today in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia and is subject to court approval.

The agreement is related to a unanimous 2018 U.S. Supreme Court decision finding the ESA does not authorize the government to designate lands as critical habitat, unless it is in fact habitat for the species. The Supreme Court also ruled that courts can review government evaluations of the impact of designating critical habitat, which the lower courts had refused to allow for over 30 years.

The coalition brought legal action after the Fish & Wildlife Service designated 9.5 million acres of mostly federal lands as NSO critical habitat across Washington, Oregon and Northern California in 2012. This was 38 percent more than was set aside in 1992 following the listing of the NSO. The coalition's legal action focused on the inclusion of millions of acres of forests not occupied by the species, including over 1.1 million acres of federal lands designated for active forest management activities and where no owls are present.

The ESA requires the federal government to take "into consideration the economic impact, the impact on national security, and any other relevant impact, of specifying any particular area as critical habitat." The coalition argued the 2012 NSO designation violated the ESA by failing to consider any negative effects from designating areas that aren't used by the NSO and never will be.

This agreement does not invalidate the 2012 NSO designation, nor does it change the Northwest Forest Plan that sets aside 20 million acres in reserve areas. Rather, it secures a commitment by the Fish & Wildlife Service to reevaluate whether designations are appropriate based on conservation benefits, environmental and economic impacts, and other factors. As with conventional federal rule-making, this regulatory process will offer opportunities for public comment and involvement.

"Our coalition supports balanced federal policies that carefully follow sound science while recognizing and considering the economic and social needs of our rural communities. This agreement will provide a public process that will enable federal agencies to develop a policy that is based in federal law and modern science. It will also enable agencies to better manage public lands to improve forest health, support local economies, while providing outdoor recreation and habitat for other species." Travis Joseph, President of the American Forest Resource Council.

"The listing of the Northern Spotted Owl and the designation of critical habitat has had a enormous negative social and economic impact on our rural communities. This agreement is a positive first step toward developing policies that balance the needs of our communities, while assuring protections for the species." Tom Lannen, Skamania County (Wash.) Commissioner.

"In addition to costing jobs and critical county revenues, the 2012 NSO critical habitat designation has severely impacted science-based efforts to implement forest management and restoration projects, including in overstocked forests, to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfires. Millions of acres of federal forests in Washington, Oregon, and Northern California are at risk of fire, disease, insect infestations, and drought putting habitat and communities at risk." Ray Haupt, Siskiyou County (Calif.) Commissioner.

"Our coalition supports science-based solutions to recovering the Northern Spotted Owl and mitigating threats to its population. Addressing threats such as the invasive Barred Owl and stand-replacing wild-fires that have devastated occupied habitat will be critical. We believe this agreement will help to restore the social and economic balances in our local communities that they so desperately need." Gary Stamper, Lewis County (Wash.) Commissioner.

Siskiyou County, California
American Forest Resource Council

GRC has chosen Association Headquarters, Inc.

This change will include GRC closing its Davis, California office and saying goodbye to several staff members. These staff members were vital to GRC and each was personally and professionally committed to the GRC mission. "AH will allow us to strengthen and grow our existing program, as well as expedite engagement with industry partners inside and outside of geothermal energy."

"As an association management company that has been partnering with associations for more than 40 years, it was immediately apparent that GRC has tremendous growth potential," said Bob Waller, Jr., CAE, President and Chief Executive Officer of AH. SAN DIEGO (PRWEB) APRIL 14, 2020

The Balboa Park Cultural Partnership has announced the achievement of four LEED building recertifications in famous Balboa Park. This achievement is a testament to the continued commitment of the Cultural Partnership, its members, the San Diego Green Building Council, the City of San Diego, and San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) to maintain and operate the historic buildings in Balboa Park using green practices. The recent recertification of Casa de Balboa, Casa del Prado, the Fleet Science Center, and The Old Globe are a continuation of the Park's centennial goal of maintaining 10 LEED certified buildings in Balboa Park.

Moreover, the goal of 10 LEED certifications in Balboa Park was a precursor to the City of San Diego's Climate Action Plan, and validates the sustainability practices, projects, and efforts established in Balboa Park since the inception of the Cultural Partnership's Sustainability Program in 2008. The focus on "green buildings" - one of which is more than 100 years old - demonstrates the critical role of building management and the positive impact it can have on our environment. In maintaining green buildings, organizations in Balboa Park are contributing to the City's Climate Action Plan goals, as well as the overall health and resiliency of the community.

The LEED recertification requires the re-evaluation of energy efficiency measures, water efficiency, waste reduction strategies, green purchasing initiatives, transportation, and more within buildings. Casa de Balboa, Casa del Prado and The Old Globe were initially LEED Silver certified in 2015; the Fleet Science Center was initially LEED Silver certified in 2010, and had maintained its Silver status for its first recertification in 2015. In the recent recertification process, Casa del Prado, the Fleet Science Center, and The Old Globe maintained their LEED Silver certification, and Casa de Balboa improved to LEED Gold certification.

Special collaborative efforts were made for Casa del Prado and Casa de Balboa, as they are multi-tenant buildings. Casa del Prado is home to such groups as the San Diego Civic Youth Ballet, San Diego Junior Theatre, and San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory. The San Diego Model Railroad Museum, Museum of Photographic Arts, and the San Diego History Center are among the tenants at Casa de Balboa. All organizations within each building were actively participating in the LEED recertification. The City of San Diego's Parks and Recreation Department was also a partner for these buildings as they oversee maintenance for Casa del Prado and partial maintenance for Casa de Balboa.

Deborah Klochko, Executive Director and Chief Curator at the Museum of Photographic Arts said on improving to LEED Gold at Casa de Balboa, "Our team at MOPA has always been stewards of the environment by improving each of our practices to have as small a carbon footprint as possible. We committed to clean power with other Casa de Balboa tenants by installing solar on our roof. Our carpets and reupholstered theater seats are made of recycled materials, and a skylight in the museum's atrium reduces the need for artificial light. We've switched to LED lights and installed controls and motion-sensing technology that dims the lights when no patrons are in the space to further reduce our energy consumption."

Since the first LEED certification in 2009 of the San Diego Natural History Museum, the Cultural Partnership has worked with the arts, science, and culture organizations in Balboa Park to complete over 100 energy efficiency and water retrofit projects helping save multiple non-profit members nearly $2 million in operation costs, and diverting 5,139 metric tons of carbon dioxide equal to greenhouse gas emissions from 1,091 passenger vehicles driven for a year.

"We are very proud of the sustainability efforts made by our member non-profits over the last 10 years here in Balboa Park," said Peter Comiskey, Executive Director of the Balboa Park Cultural Partnership. "Every one of them understands the importance of improving efficiencies, for both the planet and their bottom line. The recent LEED recertifications underscore their continued commitment to invest in green efforts."

Additional thanks go to the San Diego Green Building Council and their Green Assistance Program volunteers who provided sustainability expertise and support by helping organizations collect and document data for the LEED recertification submissions.

Josh Dean, Executive Director of the San Diego Green Building Council stated, "This was an extraordinary opportunity to engage 40 GAP volunteers in partnership with Balboa Park and City of San Diego staff in our hands-on learning program to recertify these four buildings. Being able to consistently come back to the Park, ever since the first GAP project in 2012 at the WorldBeat Cultural Center, and have these historical facilities continue to achieve high marks in the LEED O+M rating system verifies the Balboa Park Cultural Partnership's leadership in driving sustainable operations in buildings. We can't thank our volunteers, Park staff, and City staff enough for their time and commitment to the recertification of these LEED projects."

EAST SETAUKET, N.Y. (PRWEB) APRIL 14, 2020

The second phase of the Modera Metro Dadeland development, the East Tower in Miami, Florida was completed in February 2020. The 25-floor luxury apartment tower relied on Penetron crystalline technology to address the high-water table at the construction site.

With views of Miami and Biscayne Bay, the Modera Metro Dadeland community is within walking distance of the Dadeland North Metrorail station and also close to major Miami thoroughfares, including U.S. 1, the Palmetto Expressway and the Snapper Creek Expressway.

The Modera Metro Dadeland East Tower is Mill Creek Residential's eighth community development in South Florida. The 25-story East Tower features 422-luxury apartments offered in studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom configurations. Amenities include two rooftop decks, barbecue areas, an on-site park, pet spa, and an elevated swimming pool – with a spectacular view. Indoors, the East Tower offers a fitness studio, clubhouse, cybercafé, conference room, game room, theater and bike garage.

Successful Partnership
"The first phase of the Modera Metro Dadeland development – the West Tower – was completed two years ago," says Christopher Chen, Director of The Penetron Group. "Initially, a bentonite membrane was specified as a solution to waterproof below-ground concrete structures. However, Penetron was able to offer the Mill Creek project managers a more reliable and durable – not to mention more cost-effective – waterproofing solution. Due to the success of the West Tower, we were able to participate in the construction of the newly-completed East Tower as well."

SUPERMIX, the project's ready-mix supplier, treated the concrete for the East Tower's below-grade elevator pits and pool structure with PENETRON ADMIX. In addition, PENETRON, a topical waterproofing material, and PENECRETE MORTARwere used to fill the form-tie holes and complete the required repairs.

Durable Concrete Despite a Tropical Climate
As a permeability-reducing admixture that's easily added to a concrete mix, PENETRON ADMIX reacts to moisture in fresh concrete to generate a non-soluble crystalline formation throughout the pores and capillary tracts normally found in concrete. The crystalline formation permanently seals microcracks, pores and capillaries against the penetration of water or liquids from any direction, substantially reducing the permeability of the usually porous concrete matrix.

"Because it's an integral waterproofing solution, PENETRON ADMIX is permanent and provides low permeability and self-healing properties," adds Christopher Chen. "It's a highly effective solution for concrete structures exposed to the high groundwater environments encountered in Southern Florida."

The Penetron Group is a leading manufacturer of specialty construction products for concrete waterproofing, concrete repairs and floor preparation systems. The Group operates through a global network, offering support to the design and construction community through its regional offices, representatives and distribution channels.

BRIDGEVILLE, PA. (PRWEB) APRIL 15, 2020

A study recently published in Nanoscale, 2020, a journal from the Royal Society of Chemistry, showed that the Olive Leaf Extract made by Euromed demonstrably inhibits the growth of the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes. Traditionally, Olive Leaf Extract has been used as an herbal dietary supplement due to it containing oleuropein and other polyphenolic compounds which have been known to offer health benefits for blood pressure, heart health and the immune system. Now, this unique study brings the good news that in addition to enhancing human health, olive leaf extract may also be used as an antimicrobial to control potential foodborne pathogens.

The full title is "Natural flagella-templated Au nanowires as a novel adjuvant against Listeria monocytogenes" and its authors are Yanhong Liu, Renjie Du, Yuejun Qu, Phoebe X. Qi, Xingpin Sunand Min Zhao. The link to the complete study is: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32100780/?from_term=flagella-templated&from_pos=1.

Secondary plant substances, such as olive leaf extract, are gaining increasing attention as potential antibacterial and food preservative agents. These naturally occurring compounds possess diverse chemical structures, along with a wide range of biological activities, and are ideally aligned with continuing consumer trends seeking foods produced with natural ingredients.

Innovative Approach: Gold nanowires
Foodborne pathogens such as Listeria monocytogenes – often found in dairy products, vegetables, and ready-to-eat foods – can survive and grow in harsh conditions such as low temperatures. As such, the elimination of these bacteria is a significant challenge for the food industry.

In this current study, Dr. Yanhong Liu and her research colleagues did something very unusual: They synthesized gold nanowires using bacteria flagella as a template. Gold nanowires are highly effective catalysts that improve the efficiencies of secondary plant metabolites as bacterial inhibitors. The researchers were excited to find that Euromed's Olive Leaf Extract inhibits the growth of Listeria monocytogenes completely. In addition, the gold nanowires demonstrated high electrocatalytic activity and showed NO mutagenic effect at the concentration used.

This can be profoundly good news: The gold nanowires fabricated in this work have the potential to be used as new antimicrobial packing materials to enhance food safety.

Plus, the potential here for olive leaf extract is enormous, as well.

There was a previously published study that showed promising results as well: Dr. Yanhong Liu and her fellow researchers investigated the antimicrobial effect of olive leaf extract against major foodborne pathogens, including Listeria monocytogenes, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella enteritidis. The results showed that at a concentration of 62.5 mg/ml, olive leaf extract almost completely inhibited the growth of these three pathogens. Furthermore, it also inhibited biofilm formation in Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella enteritidis, and reduced cell motility in Listeria monocytogenes.

In honor of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22nd, Ohio-based L.J. Smith Stair Systems officials are sharing details on how the company recycles a variety of products. This includes 2.5 million pounds of sawdust and 48 tons of scrap cardboard each year.

BOWERSTON, OHIO (PRWEB) APRIL 15, 2020

Employees at L.J. Smith Stair Systems manufacturing and distribution facilities know all about recycling. The team has solid environmental practices in place, encouraging everything from recycling sawdust and cardboard, to having LED and motion sensor lighting installed at their facilities.

"We manufacture tens of thousands of wood balusters and newel posts each year," says Craig Kurtz, president of L.J. Smith Stair Systems. "That process results in lots of sawdust. Right now we recycle about 2.5 million pounds of sawdust each year. We've been dedicated to this recycling process for the past three decades."

Rather than throw the sawdust away, L.J. Smith sells the residue of Red Oak, Poplar, White Oak and Maple sawdust to local vendors. The company's environmental program partners use the reclaimed sawdust in a variety of products, including compost, top soil and mulch.

Recycling in Action

Recycling at L.J. Smith doesn't end with sawdust. That's really just the beginning.

"We recycle about 48 tons of scrap cardboard each year at our Bowerston, Ohio facility," says Kurtz. "We avoid disposal costs by giving this material to local companies for their use. For us, it's all about acting responsibly as a corporation."

Lighting the Way

Additional environmental actions for the company include having replaced their previous light fixtures with LED lights. That change in the company's four manufacturing operations saves on energy costs ... estimated at $40,000 each year in just the Bowerston facility.

"Several of our facilities have motion sensitive lighting," says Kurtz. "If there's no motion in a specific area after several minutes, the lights automatically turn off, saving more energy.

"We're continually reviewing ways to reuse and recycle materials in our facilities. It doesn't matter if it's 15 minutes of energy saved with a motion sensor light or thousands of pounds of wooden pallets being recycled. We try to focus on our environmental practices every day, at every location."

About L.J. Smith

From wooden hand rails to stainless steel cables, L.J. Smith Stair Systems has grown dramatically since its start in 1885. For 135 years the innovative company has developed new products, solutions and stylish rail systems for residential and commercial projects across America.

Since 1991 L.J. Smith has made many strategic acquisitions to stay on top of new stair system trends and bring people what they want. The company now has four manufacturing and distribution locations (in Bowerston, Ohio; Corona, Calif.; Ball Ground, Ga.; and Puyallup, Wash.). Three additional distribution facilities are located in Salem, N.H.; Houston, Texas and West Valley City, Utah. When NOVO Building Products purchased L.J. Smith in 2018, additional distribution locations --- in Zeeland, Mich.; Chesapeake, Va.; Allentown, Penn.; Lakeland, Fla.; and Dallas, Texas --- were added for the company's products.

L.J. Smith products --- including wooden and ornamental iron balusters, stainless steel cable and tube infills, newel posts, hand rails and accessories --- are all defined by their unique designs, uncompromised durability and good looks.
