Proverbs on pride and humility:

When pride comes, then comes disgrace,
       but with humility comes wisdom.

Better to be a nobody and yet have a servant
       than pretend to be somebody and have no food.

One man pretends to be rich, yet has nothing;
       another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth.

Pride only breeds quarrels,
       but wisdom is found in those who take advice.

The LORD tears down the proud man's house
       but he keeps the widow's boundaries intact.

The LORD detests all the proud of heart.
       Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished.

Pride goes before destruction,
       a haughty spirit before a fall.

Before his downfall a man's heart is proud,
       but humility comes before honor.

It is not fitting for a fool to live in luxuryâ€"
       how much worse for a slave to rule over princes!

Who can say, "I have kept my heart pure;
       I am clean and without sin"?

Haughty eyes and a proud heart,
       the lamp of the wicked, are sin!

The proud and arrogant man-"Mocker" is his name;
       he behaves with overweening pride.

Humility and the fear of the LORD
       bring wealth and honor and life.

Let another praise you, and not your own mouth;
       someone else, and not your own lips.

A man's pride brings him low,
       but a man of lowly spirit gains honor.

Dong, I keep on reading and re-reading this and I am still trying to understand this chapter.  I particularly like this excerpt:

Receive my instruction in preference to silver;
and knowledge rather than choice of gold.
For wisdom is better than corals, and no choice possession can compare with her.

If we follow the will and teachings of God as written in the Bible, we have in us more than any material things one can possibly have.  As a believer of God, we should not compromise God over wordly possesions.

We heard about priests particularly in the rebel-infested area of Mindanao being killed while spreading the words of us.  They knew already that their lives are in danger and yet they still follow the callings of God to serve Him.  They risk their lives so that people can know more of God.  That to me is exemplary!

Dong, thanks for sharing your spiritual experiences with me.  I was so moved to tears by your story and your honesty of how you felt about going to church with your family when you were younger.  Blessed are you who believed in Him and accepted Him in your heart.

Dong, question.  After you were re-born in that day at the Ford Chapel, did you ever felt empty since then?  You know, the feeling that when you wanted to talk to Him and you couldn't feel His presence.  Back then in the Philippines when I was so busy at work, I had my work as my life.  Going to church every Sunday (at the last mass of the day )was just a force of habit.  There was one day I felt so tired and exhausted and alone.  Yes, very alone. Overwhelmingly alone.  I called for Him but I didn't feel His presence.  I always believe that God resides in our heart so I sort of knocked my heart to no avail.  I panicked.  I cried my heart out.  I fell asleep.  The next morning, I felt light and there I felt again God presence in my being.

All US presidents are magnet of assasinations so it's not a guarantee that if Obama only becomes a VP, there will be no attempt on his life.  I'd go for Obama as the President and Hillary as VP.  If Hillary becomes the President, there will be two presidents:  it's gonna be Mr. and Mrs. Presidents Clinton!

Go Obama!  Bitaw, whoever wins as president is just fine but it would be nice to have Obama otherwise, I'd settle for him as VP.

Thanks, Beth!  I am a fan of John Grisham's books.  I can't even tell which one is my most favorite but you know, after I read his books, I just let go of them unlike the books of Coelho where I really kept them, except of course for those books that i borrowed from the library.  Anyway, of all Grisham's books, I think the book, A Painted House is quite a non-Grisham book!  Lacking was the court settings and all.

Salamat, Dong for your kind words!  Bitaw Dong, here's what I believe.  As I said earlier, I see the Lord's face in these needy people.  But on the other hand, by us helping the needy in whatever way we can, we are allowing others to see Jesus in us too.  Confusing ba?  God manifests to us every day through the people.  I had lots of encounter which I thought was with God.  One day, a couple was denied entry to the public bus because they didn't have enough money for fare.  I didn't help right away but I knew they really were in need so I did.  I gave them bus tickets and a little money for their lunch.  I only had a little money but I gave them 5 dollars.  I asked the lady if that was enough for their lunch, and with eyes of disbelief and in tears, she told me, "this is more than enough!"  Then she looked straight to my eyes, then looked up to the sky and said, "Thank you, Lord!"  You see, at that time, I still thought those needy people were God who manifested to me.  I just had a very comforting feeling that I saw Him in the face of those people.

I knew I am blessed, Dong.  God was there ready to whip me, so to speak if I am out of the path already.  One day, I was still in Manila, there was a heavy down pour that caused flooding in Metro Manila.  I was living in Ortigas area so I was safe but of course, tv coverage was bad and only showed the worst part of Manila.  My bestfriend in Cagayan de Oro called long distance, which she never did before.  She was so worried about me upon seeing how bad the flooding was.  Oh, I was so haughty!  I told my bestfriend, I was in the best place of Manila and besides, even if there was flooding, I was living in the 4th floor of the Condominium and I was sure that by the time the flooding gets to my floor, Noah's ark is already ready by then.  See, how boastful I can get?  :(  That was a Friday.  Saturday morning, I just got my laundy and put it on my bed because I was gonna re-arrange my closet. I went to the kitchen to get ready a sandwich for lunch then I heard this weird sound.  I didn't know where it was coming.  I thought it was in the elevator just outside of the kitchen door.  It wasn't.  When I checked my bedroom, the sprinkler went off and so dirty, stale and stained water was all over!  My bedroom was FLOODED! I was told that was the first time ever in that 11-year old building that the sprinkler went off and there was not even a smoke or anything to trigger it.  Then I remembered, didn’t I say to my bestfriend the day before that there was no way I could ever be flooded because I was in the 4th floor?  The wife of my boss offered me a place to stay in their house that night but I kindly refused.  I stayed in the coach that night and spoke to the Lord.

I found myself smiling and felt God’s presence. I could see Him in the dark, with both hands in His hips and a challenging smile on His lips, and said, “What can you say, my child?” I replied with a question. God, how could you love me this much to wake me up before I could go deeper to my sleep? And how could you come down so fast? Wasn’t it just a day ago that I mocked my bestfriend for worrying about flooding?

If we could break out Fil Ams from that last stat, it probably would be more like 4 to 1 on super duper Tues...joey

I was caught by surprise of Romney's withdrawing from the race when he seemed to be do or die.  I think by now, Republican's already got their candidate while Democrats are still up for grabbing by either Hillary or Obama.

When ms da binsi and I went to SF and we went to Jollibee, their restroom/CR was locked and there was a note posted in the door to inform the cashiers if we wanna use the room.  It further said the restroom is only for customers.  hmmm, not much difference with BQ.

Paying or non-paying customers if they want to mess up their bathrooms, that can still happen.  Restroom is one basic facility these stores should provide to their customers or to anybody who wishes to use.  They just have to offset lang ba kay naa man pod mga customers na dili jud mogamit sa restroom sa mga stores.

He guards his turf like a hawk but if our neighbor's dog goes wayward and cross to our property, Mocha runs like crazy!  Mocha tries to catch birds as if he has a chance.  He's a big show off!  When he catches a mice, he would make sure that we can see it, thus he gets reward from my husband.  My husband said Mocha didn't know that he's a cat.

Grace, some stores in NYC actually. I'll look for that article where I read it from so I can post it here also.

Hello, Beth!  Thanks for the link.  I guess there's nothing wrong with this ha but when a foreigners/tourists from other countries (like Philippine pesos, for example) take their own currencies to these stores and they don't honor them, that's when this racial discrimination comes in.  Oh well.

It's actually a soy bean that is picked at a certain time of maturity.  It really looks like snap peas but more plump ang beans.  It's good.  You can always order Edamame in Japanese restaurant.  Last week, smiffy found it at the Sam's Club.  Oh, just great!  It was organic and pre-cook na.  I still warm it up though in the microwave because I like it warm when I pop each seed one by one from the pod.  Yum!

No one can ever go wrong if they allow the Holy Spirit to work on us just like how He manifested in you by seeing the meaning in His Words!  I can humbly say, I learn a lot from your interpretation.

Mothers should be treated the same respect we offered to Mama Mary.  For my mother alone, she bore us 13 children into this world, nurtured us and dealth with us with all our pabadlong!  She was there the moment we tried to assert our independence by starting to walk and not wanting her to hold us.  Oh yeah, we stumbled and fall and there she was ready to pick us up.

Dong, whenever I see destitute people, I see God in them.  How could we not help if there's anything we can help?  There's always something we can do.  A comforting word, a smile, an ear to listen to, there's a lot and then there's a HUG...

You could say I'm a wine lady.  ;D I use different kinds of wine for my cakes.  Champagne in lieu of water for an otherwise plane tasting white cake.  Dry Sherry to my Poppy Seed Cake and Blueberry Wine for my, well, Blueberry cake!  I also use wines in cooking dishes.  The rule of thumb I practice:  Wine that you drink is the same wine that is good for cooking!

For drinking, I like a little of red or white wine, doesn't matter for as long as there's stinky cheese but my all-time fave is Bailey's.  I make Kahlua but most times I put it in my Chocolate Cake.

A beer that takes some of the guilt out of drinking won the top prize at the International Federation of Inventors' Association in Bangkok, Thailand.

While many of the inventions are highly technical efforts, possibly breakthroughs in the fields of medicine, agriculture and environment, crowds at the convention center in the Thai capital were rather drawn to displays such as the fail-safe hammock and Vitamin Beer.

"If you are looking for an excuse to take a swig, this is it," said Billy L. Lalang, who concocted a beer mixed with Vitamin B, to replace this essential vitamin lost when excessive amounts of alcohol are consumed.

Although yet to be marketed, this "prophylactic for drinkers" as the Philippine inventor calls it, has won a gold medal at the European Union-sponsored Genius-Europe competition.

Lalang, president of the Manila Innovation Development Society, says he has 42 inventions to his name, including a one-a-day lollipop, packed with vitamins and other essentials for undernourished children.

Other popular creations from inventors all over the globe on display include a system to stop would-be car bombers, an even a better mousetrap, a new jam spreader from Taiwan or a "cat averter garbage bag" thought up by an Iranian.

"Every time you give inventors an opportunity to have their ideas seen, that's what starts their blood flowing," said Deb Hess, executive director of the Minnesota Inventors Congress.

More than 150 of their brainchildren were unveiled at this conference of the International Federation of Inventors' Association, a Hungary-based group celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

Husein Hujic, secretary-general of the Inventors' Association of Bosnia-Herzegovina, extolled the virtues of a hammock so adaptable to the body's shape that "there is no risk to fall down off the hammock, even if the user is asleep and unconsciously moving."

Hujic, whose inventions include a patented calendar running from Jan. 1, of the Christian era to 4619, spoke so convincingly of the swinging bed.

From Niger came a pest trap with "automatic rearmament," while the Iranian booth displayed a garbage bag infused with unnamed vegetal and chemical ingredients that are not harmful to humans or the environment but ward off cats, thus reducing urban litter.

Among the American inventions was an "invisible gym," an armchair that converts in 30 seconds into an exercise machine for the arms, upper body, legs and thighs. It comes in his and hers configurations.

Next to photographs of buildings devastated by terrorist bombs, Taiwan's Chih-Hong Huang pointed to diagrams explaining his "anti-terror defending facility against car-crash attack" a pressure sensor that instantly throws up a steel barrier when a vehicle of a certain weight rolls over it.

The three-day conference, held under the motto of "without inventor no invention, without innovation no development," also features discussions on improving the international system of patents and global sustainability.

Vicky Wallace

An advocate of organic farming and a self-confessed insect-lover, 44-year old Vicky Wallace has become the most sought after figure in Bohol. Buying a 4.8-hectare property to pursue her love for farming and successfully establishing the Bohol Bee Farm to continue promoting things that are organically grown, she could proudly say that farming is so far the best thing that has happened in her life.

A foremost supporter of companion planting that allows the growth of different kinds of indigenous materials near the vegetable gardens, Wallace urges that having insects which most farmers regard as pests is not at all an alarming issue. In fact she tolerates having these shelters and nesting places for insects near her plots of plants, saying that it is lovely to live harmoniously on the farm with other creatures.

Mr. Enad will have an interesting case kay first, pwede nya i insist na cultural thing ni sya.  Pareho gud nang ubang mga Muslim ladies who refused to take off their purong when taking pictures for their Driver's License kay lagi that's an intrusion to their religious beliefs.  Mao na dayon, they insisted of the racial discrimination thingie pero wala jud sila na grant ani na case.  For Mr. Enad, ang problema lang gud kay he has to have a permit to do this kay ga involve man gud ug food and they are so strict here when it comes to food and sanitation.  Naa man Pinoy dre na ga lechon sa ilang neighborhood but they are doing this for business so presumably naa ni silay permit to do so.

 "Give strong drink to one who is perishing,
and wine to the sorely depressed;
When they drink, they will forget their misery,
and think no more of their burdens"

Reading and re-reading this excerpt, one thing came to mind is that we should be sympathetic and compassionate to the less fortunate and downtrodden and whoever needs comforting.  By doing so, we are taking a part of their problems thus making things bearable for them.

When my Uncle died two weeks ago, things became bearable for my family back home because of the support of the community.

I am thinking about what Beth said that "some businessmen accept Euro cash in New York City..."  Are these businessmen into exchanging currencies?  Since US Dollar is the official currency here, it is but right to use the official currency in this country.  I remember one time, a Mexican pizza man in California decided to accept Mexican pesos as tender for his goods.  It generated bad reaction from the people.  I don't really know if this is a violation to any law though.

Pagkamakalu-luoy intawon oi!  May Mr. Dawson rest in peace now and I hope this young lady, Ms. Piquero can find peace and start anew her life now that her would-have-been-husband is gone.  Life is tough indeed.

Lahi jud sa ato ba?  We can't be accepted in the hospital no matter how sick we are if we don't have money.  Hospital policy, that's what they keep on telling me when my Mom was hostaged herself kay wala pa mi ikadugang sa deposit.  If you read bya the hospital's mission and vision statement, layo ra jud sa ilang binuhatan.  Wala jud gi ingon didto na dili dapatan ug serbisyo ang pasyente kon walay money.

Unya kon mamatay, dapat ilubong na dayon kay ila na pod i "hostage" and dead body if dili ka bayad.  Two weeks ago during the wake of my Uncle, I was told by my mother na we need to pay Funeraria Gomez kay di jud malubong kon di kabayad sa 17,500 pesos charge.  I knew ma istorya ra to si Nong Ben Udtohan but then again, maybe not.  Basin policy jud nila na di malubong unless ma settle ang financial obligation.
