Today at work, I talked to an older RN in the floor and asked how she was doing. I call this particular RN a "Tita" because she tries to help me in the floor and always makes good conversation. Today, I asked her how she was doing and she always says, "Okay lang gehapon, Doy, Datung Pobre."

This particular nurse is from Bohol.

So in response to her response ingon pod ko, "Ah, ka dato-a nimo, Tita, uy! Kai datuhang pobre man. Ako , pobreng pobre lang gehapon".

i've heared that she is high school grad only, she served 1 year and half as a mayor of carmen.

Well, perhaps she learned to be a mayor through the school of hard knocks. True, many politicians have a long educational background and even a stint in the legal profession or some kind of professional field, but there have been good and effective politicians with limited educational background , an example was Andrew Jackson, the 6th President of the United States.

I don't know anything about the mayor of Carmen , never heard of her until I read this thread. What kind of improvements did she effect in her town?

Will,

If you are going to Iloilo, you will see a lot ! When you land to Iloilo International Airport, you can explore Iloilo city as well as the surrounding suburbs such as Santa Barbara, which is home to the Santa Barbara Church, one of the oldest churches in the Philippines. You can travel all around the province of Iloilo, to the north you can visit the beautiful Passi City; the drive there will be scenic and you can see the full breadth of the farms and the small payags that dot the scenery. To the east you can visit Dumangas, and if you continue on to the north, you can visit Aklan, Antique ! You can also even visit Boracay Island :)

There is so much to see when you land in Iloilo. And trust me, the food is really really good there. ;D

In other words; there is an estimated some over 9 trillion units of natural gas and oil in the South China Sea (West Philippine Sea), the only reason why the CCP is now recently claiming these areas is because of resources. They want those natural resources.

So they are inverting history and changing facts so that they can try to claim these areas ; however, the problem is that the world knows that these areas are part of other nation countries via history.

This is the reason why the Philippines is asking CHina to go to the international court to settle this diplomatically, ang problema is that CHina will not go to the court because the CCP knows that her claim is wrong. Kahibalo man ni sila (ang CCP) that sa una, dili man intawn ning area sa south china sea considered part sa China.

Di ko gusto ma sideline ani, Bai Hubag, I just merely wanted to state (via my example that my lolo never considered this area as part of China) how differently the Chinese of some 100 years ago thought as the current CCP government.

I wanted to show lang, just in that one segment in my post, as it was part of an entire paragraph, that the current CCP is using erroneous claims considering that the philippines and the territories to its west were already part of an existing political entity.

Additionally, Bai Hubag, I also wanted to stress that ang mga Chinese sa una, they never considered islands outside of China, as part of China. Kining islands sa south east asia, were considered "Ngoi Dou" , which means "Far away islands". Kai duol man kaayo sa Pilipinas, it was considered as part of Fei Guo (Pilipinas).

I stand that the current CCP is using ultranationalism and distorting history to try to gain support from their populace now, when in actuality, these areas were never considered part of "CHina" by the past, nor was it considered part of China by the Chinese people.

What we are seeing right now is how the CCP government is distorting history in order to rival national claims. I just hope and pray that there will be no ethnic clashes in the Pilipinas kai daghan baya mga Inchik sa Pilipinas nga dili mo agree sa CCP. Mo ampo lang ko that this situation between Pilipinas and China calms down.

That's all that I wanted to say, Bai Hubag. Sige ha.

Bai Hubag, it stresses the fact that even back then (some 100 years ago), Chinese people from Southern China never referred to the islands in close proximity to the Philippines as being part of Zhongguo (China), but rather, were always considered part of Feiguo  (Philippines).

As anything outside of China proper was considered foreign. I gave a personal anecdote lang, as my lolo is Chinese and from southern China.

I highly doubt that war will be the case, Raquel. I don't think that the CCP is foolish enough to allow itself to start fighting, it would not serve their interest at all. She has too much at stake to clash head on; her long-term geopolitical interests would be undermined.

The best thing now is for all sides to be diplomatic.

This is very sad because the cultures of China and Philippines is rather intertwined, as many of us share links with them. War should be prevented and all resources should be exhausted to preserve peace between our two great countries.

well, while china as a "threat to philippine existence" is putting it too far (the philippines will exist even if filipinos become martians), china is a threat not only to philippine territorial integrity but also to practically all of its neighbors, even to its own "breakaway province": the republic of china (taiwan), which identifies itself as a separate territory and sovereign.

the countries bullied (or rivaled if it cannot bully them) by china over territory and/or sovereignty:

tibet (as they say, the rest is history)
india (against whom it fought 2 wars over territorial disputes)
russia (hah!  yes, russia too.)
bhutan
mongolia
japan
north korea
south korea
philippines
myanmar
malaysia
vietnam
brunei
republic of china (taiwan)

from its north to south, its east to west, it is as if no neighboring country was spared by china.

Zhongguo is and has always been a peaceful country, only recently with the rise of the CCP , that they have militarized China.

Chinese in the past were never imperialistic or war-like as the CCP-controlled China of today! When my Lolo Mariano arrived to Pilipinas from China in 1903, he had a lot of respect for the people in the Philippines. Dili man intawn ang attitude sa mga Chinese sa una nga they own these islands nor were they ever imperialistic at all.

These pieces of sh!t CCP members are using ultranationalistic sentiments to politicize this when they know that , historically speaking, their claims are unsupported.

I know that true Chinese people, who actually read history, know that the CCP are feeding the people utter nonsense and BS lies.

Here is a map of the full extent of Imperial China under the Qing Dynasty, notice that no where does the area around the west of Fei-Guo (Philippines) being claimed or labeled as part of China.

The Chinese claim that they have the right to claim Scarborough Shoal because it was listed as "HUANGYAN ISLAND"  [ : é»,,岩岛 ] in Old Imperial Qing Dynasty Maps.

The current CCP's argument does not take into consideration the fact that during this time, the Philippines was already part of the Political Entity called Nueva Espana , which was a Viceroyalty of Spain.

The fact that the former Qing Dynasty's cartographers named the shoal as : é»,,岩岛 or (pronounced as Huangyan Island), does not necessarily mean ownership since that area was already part of an existing political entity, in this case, the Spanish Philippines.

They are being ridiculous in their arguments because during the time of my great-grandfather, who was a pure-blooded Chinese from present day Guangdong, the people in that area referred to the islands south of China as "Ngoi Dou", which means "far away islands".

My great-grandfather and his family referred to the islands south of China as "Ngoi Dou", as well as this reflected the opinion of the Chinese during this time, which incidentally was under the Imperial Qing Dynasty.

Chinese people back then did not refer to these islands as part of China nor did they consider these areas "fishing grounds" of China. These areas were always referred to as "Fei Guo", since people living in the Philippines were referred to as Feiguoren (pronounced Fei-Guo-Ren).

The arguments of the CCP is preposterous ! This is all political BS ! And they are distorting history !

Catholic Answers Director of Apologetics and Evangelization Tim Staples answers a caller who asks what we can do to counter attacks on the Catholic Church.

Tim Staples is Director of Apologetics and Evangelization here at Catholic Answers, but he was not always Catholic. Tim was raised a Southern Baptist. Although he fell away from the faith of his childhood, Tim came back to faith in Christ during his late teen years through the witness of Christian televangelists. Soon after, Tim joined the Marine Corps.

During his four-year tour, he became involved in ministry with various Assemblies of God communities. Immediately after his tour of duty, Tim enrolled in Jimmy Swaggart Bible College and became a youth minister in an Assembly of God community. During his final year in the Marines, however, Tim met a Marine who really knew his faith and challenged Tim to study Catholicism from Catholic and historical sources. That encounter sparked a two-year search for the truth. Tim was determined to prove Catholicism wrong, but he ended up studying his way to the last place he thought he would ever end up: the Catholic Church!

He converted to Catholicism in 1988 and spent the following six years in formation for the priesthood, earning a degree in philosophy from St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Overbrook, Pennsylvania. He then studied theology on a graduate level at Mount St. Mary's Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland, for two years. Realizing that his calling was not to the priesthood, Tim left the seminary in 1994 and has been working in Catholic apologetics and evangelization ever since.

There is a great controversy over the news release yesterday, which stated the Pope had "buried" the concept of the Limbo of the infants (limbus infantium). Let me start by clarifying that the Limbo of the Fathers (limbus patrum) - the place where the holy people who died before Christ was resurrected - still is part of Catholic Theology. The Limbo of the infants, called Limbo for short, was the only idea addressed yesterday.

Here is part of an article by Reuters:

The Roman Catholic Church has effectively buried the concept of limbo, the place where centuries of tradition and teaching held that babies who die without baptism went. In a long-awaited document, the Church's International Theological Commission said limbo reflected an "unduly restrictive view of salvation," according to the U.S.-based Catholic News Service, which obtained a copy on Friday.

The thumbs-down verdict on limbo had been expected for years and the document, called "The Hope of Salvation for Infants Who Die Without Being Baptised," was seen as most likely to be final since limbo was never formally part of Church doctrine. Pope Benedict authorized the publication of the document. According to the CNS report, the 41-page document says the theologians advising the Pope concluded that since God is merciful he "wants all human beings to be saved."

The media is attempting to make it seem as if Limbo was always a firm dogma. It wasn't! The Limbo of the infants was just a "theological hypothesis". In reality, no one knows the fate of children who die without the Sacrament of Baptism. Baptism is necessary for salvation, but these children may have never had the opportunity to become baptized. St. Augustine took a different approach and believed that children who die without Baptism would unfortunately have to go to Hell. Pope St. Pius X and numerous other saints have disagreed and claimed that such children go to an special place called Limbo (see bottom of post). Personally, I will continue believing in the Limbo of the infants.

All of this is just a theological hypothesis. We do not know the fate of such children even after the report by the International Theological Commission because the Commission is not infallible either. The findings of the Commission are not binding to anyone!

From a Catholic World News article of yesterday: "Limbo has never been defined as church dogma and is not mentioned in the current Catechism of the Catholic Church, which states simply that unbaptized infants are entrusted to God's mercy."

The Catechism of Pope St. Pius X:

11 Q. When should infants be brought to the Church to be baptised?
A. Infants should be brought to the Church to be baptised as soon as possible.

12 Q. Why such anxiety to have infants receive Baptism?
A. There should be the greatest anxiety to have infants baptised because, on account of their tender age, they are exposed to many dangers of death, and cannot be saved without Baptism.

Auctorem Fidei by Pope Pius VI, August 28, 1794:

[Errors of the Synod of Pistoia.] The doctrine which rejects as a Pelagian fable that place of the lower regions (which the faithful generally designate by the name of limbo of the children) in which the souls of those departing with the sole guilt of original sin are punished with the punishment of the condemned, exclusive of the punishment of fire [...] is false, rash, injurious to Catholic schools.

The Limbo of the Infants

by Br. Thomas Mary Sennott, M.I.C.M. January 22, 2009

As a corollary to the necessity of Faith and Baptism for salvation, St. Thomas also taught that unbaptized babies went to the Limbo of the Children (Summa Theologica. III, Q. 52, a. 7). But later the rigorist Jansenists taught that unbaptized babies rather went to the fires of hell, and they called the Limbo of the Children a “Pelagian Heresy.”

Their teaching was condemned by Pope Pius VI in 1794:

“The doctrine which rejects as a Pelagian fable that place of the lower regions (which the faithful generally designate by the name Limbo of the Children) in which the souls of those departing with the sole guilt of original sin are punished with the punishment of the condemned, exclusive of fire, just as if by this very fact, that those who remove the punishment of fire introduced that middle place and state, free of guilt and punishment between the kingdom of God and eternal damnation, such as that about which the Pelagians idly talk: [Condemned as] false, rash, injurious to Catholic schools (Denz. 1526).”

Today there are many Catholics agitating for the abolition of the Limbo of the Children for the sake of getting the souls of aborted babies into heaven. This is really out-Pelagianing Pelagius. It seems that this will only encourage abortion. If a woman is hesitating about having an abortion, and someone tells her that her aborted baby would go directly to the Beatific Vision, this could push her over the brink. [Editor's note: We have heard of at least one case in which two women were considering committing abortion. When they were encoraged by a Catholic friend to hear a bishop speak on the issue, they decided to go. The result? After they heard the bishop say that aborted babies go straight to heaven, they went right out and had the abortions.]

Na, that same day, she and lolo took my sister and I to the merkado in Valencia. She bought us our little wallets. I can remember it , we used to put our sukli in our pitakas. Since that day, I have always tried to be fiscally conservative and count my money and not try to waste what I earned.

Lola also put a jade in our pitaka for good luck. Chinese good luck kono to' hehehe ;D

(Reuters) - China's military warned the United States on Saturday that U.S.-Philippine military exercises have raised risks of armed confrontation over the disputed South China Sea, in the toughest high-level warning yet after weeks of tension.

China's official Liberation Army Daily warned that recent jostling with the Philippines over disputed seas where both countries have sent ships could boil over into outright conflict, and laid much of the blame at Washington's door.

American and Filipino troops launched two weeks of annual naval drills on April 16 amid the stand-off between Beijing and Manila, who have accused each other of encroaching on sovereign seas near the Scarborough Shoal, west of a former U.S. navy base at Subic Bay.

The joint exercises are held in different seas around the Philippines. The leg that takes place in the South China Sea area, which could be rich in oil and gas and is spanned by busy shipping lanes, starts on Monday.

"Anyone with clear eyes saw long ago that behind these drills is reflected a mentality that will lead the South China Sea issue down a fork in the road towards military confrontation and resolution through armed force," said the commentary in the Chinese paper, which is the chief mouthpiece of the People's Liberation Army.

"Through this kind of meddling and intervention, the United States will only stir up the entire South China Sea situation towards increasing chaos, and this will inevitably have a massive impact on regional peace and stability."

The Pentagon said this was a regular exercise "not tied to any current situation."

"The focus of this year's exercise is on disaster response and civic assistance," said Pentagon spokeswoman, Navy Commander Leslie Hull-Ryde.

Up to now, China has chided the Philippines over the dispute about the uninhabited shoal known in the Philippines as the Panatag Shoal and which China calls Huangyan, about 124 nautical miles off the main Philippine island of Luzon.

China has territorial disputes with the Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia and Taiwan across the South China Sea.

Major General Luo Yuan, a retired PLA researcher well-known for his hawkish views, amplified the warnings from Beijing issued through state media.

"China has already shown enough restraint and patience over this incident," Luo said of the friction with Manila, according to an interview published on Chinese state television's website (news.cntv.cn).

If the Philippines "takes irrational actions, then the current confrontation could intensify, and the Chinese navy will certainly not stand idly by," he added.

REGIONAL TENSIONS

Beijing has sought to resolve the disputes one-on-one with the countries involved but there is worry among its neighbours over what some see as growing Chinese assertiveness in staking claims over the seas and various islands, reefs and shoals.

In past patches of tension over disputed seas, hawkish Chinese military voices have also risen, only to be reined in later by the government. The same could be true this time.

Since late 2010, China has sought to cool tensions with the United States. Especially with the ruling Chinese Communist Party preoccupied with a leadership succession late in 2012, Beijing has stressed hopes for steady relations throughout this year.

Nonetheless, experts have said China remains wary of U.S. military intentions across the Asia-Pacific, especially after the Obama administration's vows to "pivot" to the region, reinvigorating diplomatic and security ties with allies.

The Liberation Army Daily commentary echoed that wariness.

(Reuters) - China's top military newspaper warned the United States on Saturday that U.S.-Philippine military exercises have fanned risks of armed confrontation over the disputed South China Sea.

The commentary in China's Liberation Army Daily falls short of a formal government statement, but marks the harshest high-level warning yet from Beijing about tensions with the Philippines over disputed seas where both countries have recently sent ships to assert their claims.

This week American and Filipino troops launched a fortnight of annual naval drills amid the stand-off between Beijing and Manila, who have accused each other of encroaching on sovereign seas near the Scarborough Shoal, west of a former U.S. navy base at Subic Bay.

The joint exercises are held in different seas around the Philippines; the leg that takes place in the South China Sea area starts on Monday.

In past patches of regional tension over disputed seas, hawkish Chinese military voices have also emerged, only to be later reined in by the government, and the same could be true this time.

Since late 2010, China has sought to cool tensions with the United States over regional disputes, trade and currency policies, human rights and other contentious issues. Especially with the ruling Chinese Party preoccupied with a leadership succession late in 2012, Beijing has stressed its hopes for steady relations throughout this year.

Nonetheless, experts have said that China remains wary of U.S. military intentions across the Asia-Pacific, especially in the wake of the Obama administration's vows to "pivot" to the region, reinvigorating diplomatic and security ties with allies.

The Liberation Army Daily commentary echoed that wariness.

"The U.S. strategy of returning to the Asia-Pacific carries the implication of a shift in military focus, and there is no better strategic opening than China's sovereignty disputes with the Philippines and other countries in the South China Sea," said the newspaper.

"The United States' intention of trying to draw more countries into stirring up the situation in the South China Sea is being brandished to the full," it said.
